ABSTRACT Cormac McCarthy has stated that tragedy is central to human experience and that “the core of literature is the idea of tragedy.” Furthermore, he maintains that the tragic genre probes how humans “deal with” the bad things that happen to them. McCarthy’s duology, The Passenger and Stella Maris, locates its main narrative concerning Alicia and Bobby Western’s taboo love within the framework of romantic tragedy. Incest has been a much-revisited topic within Western tragedy. Consider the dramas of Sophocles, Euripides, Seneca, John Webster, John Ford, Henrik Ibsen, and Eugene O’Neill. In McCarthy’s treatment, incest is an impediment to reciprocal love. This tragic fatedness crosses any expectations Alicia and Bobby court of mutual happiness and fulfillment. The duology explores the siblings’ ways of dealing with their tragic condition, the romantic Alicia’s all-or-nothing, self-destructive passion and the ascetic Bobby’s attitude of self-denial and endurance. Two tragic antecedents further inform McCarthy’s examination of forbidden love: William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1597) and the Nahua myth of the warrior Popocatépetl and the princess Iztaccíhuatl. The article concludes by proposing that, despite the duology’s preoccupation with the tragic human condition, the narrative tentatively gestures to a state of being that might, perhaps, lie beyond tragedy.

AbstractΛιβανωτός is a rare word in the Biblia graeca and means ‘frankincense’. It appears once in the canonical Septuagint in 1 Chron 9.29 as part of a list of ingredients which were under the care of the Levites: flour, wine, olive oil, incense and spices. In the Apocrypha, it appears in 3 Macc 5.2 as a drug, together with unmixed wine, for maddening or running elephants wild. Then it is used only in Rev 8.3, 5 in constructions which made lexicographers unanimously define λιβανωτός as a container (censer or brazier). However, when one examines the usage of this noun in Greek writing at large, he or she observes, not without surprise, that λιβανωτός exhibits impressively stable semantics. Virtually everywhere in the history of Greek, the term is a spice (frankincense). Why then should Rev 8.3, 5 be an exception? The study probes into the claim that λιβανωτός means ‘censer’ in the Johannine Apocalypse, shows how well the regular meaning of incense fits in the scene John witnesses, and draws important implications for the understanding of the text and the lexicographical task.

Indoor air quality has become a topic of great concern. Burning incense has recently been identified as one of the primary sources of volatile organic compounds, specifically benzene, in an indoor setting. The current paper aims to evaluate volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, particularly benzene, within indoor environments through the utilization of an experimental clean room. Experimental findings showed that 10 types of incense sticks emitted benzene in concentrations between 11.1 and 66.5 μg m−3, which were 2.5 lower than the limit suggested for non-occupation indoor exposure (160 μg m−3), identified by the American Association of Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). Furthermore, a correlation between the dimensions (diameter and length) of the combustible parts in an incense stick was investigated and indicated a slight influence on the release of benzene. Taking into consideration the substantial influence benzene has on human health, coupled with a lack of precise legislation regarding indoor air quality in residential settings, this research serves as an initial investigation into the noteworthy effects of burning incense in private and public indoor settings.

This study investigated the effect of substituting cement with incense ash on material properties and hydration of cement-based composite materials. Test specimens with incense ash replacing up to 30% (volume) of cement were produced and cured at 25 °C and 75 °C for up to 120 days. The researchers of this study observed the effect on setting time, heat conduction, compressive strength, and water absorption, and conducted a microanalysis to observe the structural change of hydration products. The results indicated that by substituting cement with incense ash, the hydration reaction was hastened, and the setting time shortened. When 5% of cement was replaced, incense ash had the effect of filling the voids between particles. At a higher curing temperature, the frequency of particle collisions increased, expediting the hydration reaction and improving the strength of the specimens. At a longer curing time, voids in the specimens were gradually filled by colloids, and pozzolanic reaction caused the amount of Ca(OH)2 to diminish and C–S–H gel to increase, which in turn improved the structural cohesion, reduced the water absorption, and increased the strength and thermal conductivity of the specimens.

With the global #Metoo movement yet to arrive in Nigeria, Jude Dibia’s Unbridled reflects an emblematic moment for the underrepresented to occupy their stories and make their voices heard. The study analyzes patriarchy’s complicated relationship with the Nigerian girl child, significantly reviewing the inherent prejudices in patriarchy’s power hierarchies and how radical narratives explore taboo topics like incest and sexual violence. Contextualizing the concepts of hypersexualization and implicit bias to put in perspective how women, expected to be the gatekeepers of sex, are forced to navigate competing allegiances while remaining submissive and voiceless, the article probes the struggles of sexual victims and how hierarchies in a patriarchal society exacerbate their affliction through a culture of silence. Arguing that Dibia’s Unbridled confronts the narrative of silence in Nigerian fiction, the article explores ways the author empowers gender by challenging social values and traditional gender roles, underscoring gender dynamics and the problematic nature of prevalent bias against the feminine gender in Nigeria.

A diferencia del enfoque en la «negrura» y el «pesimismo» favorecido por algunos críticos en sus análisis del primer poemario de César Vallejo, en este ensayo utilizo la ecocrítica para investigar el papel desempeñado por «lo verde» en Los heraldos negros. Inicio mi análisis con los poemas juveniles, tales como «Fosforencia» y «Transpiración vegetal», y propongo que son importantísimos para entender la fascinación primordial que tenía Vallejo por la naturaleza, como también son cruciales aquellos poemas de Los heraldos negros en los cuales Vallejo plantea «lo verde». Luego paso a una investigación de cómo Vallejo describe su relación incestuosa con su sobrina por medio de la metáfora de la narrativa herética de la relación sexual entre Cristo y María Magdalena en poemas como «Nervazón de angustia», «Comunión» y «Setiembre», y sugiero que revelan un lado «verde» del yo poético de Vallejo. Finalmente, recurro a las teorías del antropólogo francés Claude Lévi-Strauss sobre lo «cocido» y lo «crudo», y la prohibición del incesto como la piedra angular de la cultura humana para proponer que el yo poético de Vallejo buscaba la dulzura en un mundo en que pudiera prescindir de la necesidad de comunicarse con los demás al mismo tiempo que rehusaba cambiar de mujeres, para así poder, citando las palabras de Lévi-Strauss, «vivre entre soi».

La Batalla de l’Ebre (1938) va ser la més decisiva de la Guerra Civil espanyola. La desfeta de l’Exèrcit Popular va provocar l’ocupació de Catalunya i la victòria definitiva de les forces del general Franco sobre la República espanyola. Els vencedors van ubicar sobre el camp de batalla monuments per escenificar la seva victòria, però les accions de patrimonialització van tenir un desenvolupament limitat, mentre que la II Guerra Mundial i el seu desenllaç van obrir perspectives incertes per al règim del general Franco. La mort del dictador l’any 1975 va provocar canvis polítics a Espanya, i els espais històrics de la Batalla de l’Ebre van conèixer noves intervencions a l’entorn del seu patrimoni, subsidiàries dels imaginaris socials i polítics del procés de democratització. Nous monuments i instal·lacions museals convidaven a una interpretació de la batalla compatible amb l’imaginari de reconciliació desenvolupat pel nou règim constitucional. Dècades després dels combats, la batalla de l’Ebre continuava, però ara la pugna s’establia entre models i accions per fixar la memòria al territori, a partir d’intervencions patrimonials, museus, monuments i escultures. En el context d’emergència democràtica de principis del segle XXI, les iniciatives de la societat civil, sumades a les dinàmiques de recerca i socialització del coneixement impulsades en clau d’història pública i arqueologia pública, obrien noves perspectives en la recuperació d’una memòria republicana de la batalla. En aquest context destaquen les iniciatives del grup de recerca «Didàctica del Patrimoni» (DIDPATRI) de la Universitat de Barcelona. L’estudi aproxima les diferents fases d’apropiació, en clau de memòria històrica, del camp de batalla de l’Ebre, i les iniciatives i casuístiques principals de patrimonialització generades, al seu entorn, en els diferents moments històrics.

This paper addresses the issue of developing a widely accepted Olympics ranking scheme based upon the Olympic Game medal table published by the International Olympic Committee, since the existing lexicographic ranking and sum ranking systems are both criticized as biases. More specifically, the lexicographic ranking system is deemed as overvaluing gold medals, while the sum ranking system fails to reveal the real value of gold medals and fails to discriminate National Olympic Committees that won equal number of medals. To start, we employ a sophisticated mathematical method based upon the incenter of a convex cone to aggregate the lexicographic ranking system. Then, we consider the fact that the preferences between the lexicographic and the sum ranking systems may not be consistent across National Olympic Committees and develop a well-designed mathematical transformation to obtain interval assessment results under typical preference. The formulation of intervals is inspired by the observation that it is extremely difficult to achieve a group consensus on the exact value of weights with respect to each ranking system, since different weight elicitation methods may produce different weight schemes. Finally, regarding the derived decision making problem involving interval-valued data, this paper utilizes the Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis to obtain a comprehensive ranking of all National Olympic Committees. Instead of determining precise weights, this work probes the weight space to guarantee each alternative getting the most preferred one. The proposed method is illustrated by presenting a new ranking of 12 National Olympic Committees participating in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Partial discharge inception modeling is a powerful tool for material investigation and insulation system design in order to achieve the objective of PD-free operation of insulation systems. Model validation, however, requires accurate and repeatable testing conditions, and the aim of this paper is to look at the influence of electrodes and electric field simulation on partial discharge inception model prediction accuracy. Awareness of the geometric electrode configuration is important to forecast both the typology of discharge and the corresponding partial discharge inception voltage value. It is shown, in fact, that inaccurate evaluation of electrode shape (e.g., its flat part and contour) might impact significantly on electric field estimation, the typology of incepted discharges, and, thus, on model accuracy, i.e., on partial discharge inception voltage prediction, which is the basis for the partial discharge-free design of insulating materials and systems. In particular, small electrode curvature radius variations do not significantly affect the PDIV value or PD typology identification. However, worsening electrode/insulation specimen contact can significantly impact PD inception and typology evaluation.

Background: Objectives of current study was to define the sociodemographic characteristics of patients, to determine the frequency of HPV infection at the CHRSL and to describe factors associated with HPV infection. Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in the gynecology-obstetrics department of the Saint Louis Regional Hospital Center from November 11, 2019 to November 11, 2021, a period of 24 months. We studied sociodemographic, clinical and test results characteristics. Samples were taken from patients in the gynaecological position using a dedicated kit (cytobrush and tube). Viral research was carried out using the Atila Biosystems device for amplification and detection of viral DNA. This test genotypes HPV 16, 18 and 45, and detects 12 other HR HPVs (31, 33, 35, 39, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 and 68) simultaneously using three probes labelled with different fluorophores. Analysis was performed using Epi-Info software and Excel 2010. Results: The study population comprised 128 patients. The mean age of the patients was 41.95 years, with extremes of 23 and 70 years. They were married (92.97%) and housewives (46.88%). Almost all patients (77.34%) were genitally active. The average age at marriage was 21.78 years, and polygamous households predominated (53.91%). The average age at first intercourse was 20.05 years. The average age at first pregnancy was 21.78. Over (57.81%) of patients had at least two partners. Incense was used in 97.66% of cases. The viral HPV test was positive in (38.28%) of patients. High-risk papillomaviruses were the most common, at 63.27%. Colposcopy was performed in 17.19%; normal and satisfactory in (63.64%) of patients, with 22.27% of cervical biopsies, and histology showed one CIN2 and two CIN3. Therapeutically, one thermoablation and two hysterectomies were performed. Conclusions: HPV viral typing in primary screening for cervical cancer offers opportunities and remains realistic and feasible in less developed countries such as Senegal, despite modest resources.

A ultrassonografia é um método de diagnóstico por imagem amplamente utilizado na medicina veterinária, dessa forma, permite a avaliação de diversos órgãos em tempo real. A ultrassonografia abdominal é fundamental para avaliar os órgãos abdominais, como o baço, que possui importantes funções no organismo dos animais e é predisposto a vários processos patológicos, dentre eles os neoplásicos. A neoplasia esplênica mais comum é o hemangiossarcoma, que é um tumor originado de células endoteliais dos vasos sanguíneos, altamente maligno e metastático, que ocorre mais frequentemente em cães com idade média de nove a 12 anos, e as raças mais predispostas são Pastor Alemão, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever e Schnauzer. A etiologia do hemangiossarcoma em cães permanece incerta e geralmente os sinais clínicos são inespecíficos, variando conforme o local de origem do tumor primário, com a presença ou ausência de metástases e com a ruptura espontânea do tumor. O diagnóstico dessa afecção é realizado através do histórico e sinais clínicos do paciente, exame físico e exames complementares, sendo assim, o estadiamento clínico permite uma avaliação precisa do estágio da doença do paciente. A ultrassonografia abdominal é importante para detectar hemangiossarcoma esplênico, o qual é identificado por sua ecogenicidade complexa e heterogênea, sendo constituído de áreas anecogênicas, hipoecogênicas e hiperecogênicas, causadas por hemorragia, necrose e tecido fibrótico ou calcificado, e muitas vezes é acompanhado de líquido peritoneal. Além disso, auxilia no direcionamento do tratamento e consequentemente melhora a qualidade de vida do paciente. Porém, o diagnóstico definitivo só pode ser obtido através de análise histopatológica de amostras coletadas por biópsia guiada por ultrassom ou após esplenectomia. Normalmente, o prognóstico do hemangiossarcoma é ruim. O objetivo desse trabalho é descrever as características ultrassonográficas encontradas no hemangiossarcoma esplênico em cães.

<p>當應該提供保護的父親變成性侵害的加害者、當母親捍衛著家庭的完整卻忽略孩子的受傷，安置成為終止傷害必要的手段時，服務系統提供些什麼幫助亂倫受害者創傷復原、返家後的適應以及其中的成長與轉化歷程，是本研究所關注的焦點。本研究以敘說分析的方式，探討父女亂倫受害者在經過通報安置並進入服務系統後，受害者對於各項服務介入的知覺及創傷復原歷程。藉由深度訪談蒐集亂倫受害者的回顧詮釋，理解其被通報後的內在知覺感受和外在情境脈絡的交互影響，並嘗試歸納受害者復原的正向促進因子。研究結果發現，儘管離開原生家庭是分離和失落、面對陌生環境是混亂和不安，但安置期間得以被適當對待和獲得新經驗。當結束安置，面對解構再重組的家庭、陌生卻又熟悉的母親、不同生命階段的開展，返家雖然是另一段艱辛挑戰的開始，但服務系統持續提供支持、穩定的諮商關係引導自我覺察與自我了解，以及過程中累積而成的值得被愛的感受及信任，可以讓亂倫受害者內化經驗形成新的視野與能力，並持續自我覺察與自我照顧，進而踏上復原之路。</p> <p> </p><p>Out-of-home placement may become necessary when the father, who should have been the protector, becomes the perpetrator of sexual assault, and the mother, who attempts to keep the family together, neglects the impact of trauma on the child. This research focuses on what the service system provides to help victims of incest recover from trauma, facilitate them to fit in after returning home, and pinpoint mechanisms by which victims change in the process. Through the narrative approach, this research explores the victim’s perception in regards to post-report placement, treatment, and services in the child protective service system offered by Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Center. Through in-depth interviews to gather the victim’s reflections and interpretation, this research seeks to understand and analyze the correlation between the victim’s internalized perception and externalized awareness, and to enlist the protective factors which promote recovery. This study attempts to show the history of being placed to return home of incestuous victims, but the ups and downs of the process is a long dark and unending arduous course and painful metamorphosis for the victims. The victim’s childhood experience is formed not only from the sexual abuse of the biological father but also from the growing trauma of constantly carved, accumulated family injuries, which are likely to be healed only if all variables involved are pinpointed. The study found that despite the grief of separation from the family of origin and the anxiety provoked by being placed into a completely unfamiliar environment, being placed in a placement agency may begin to restore the victim’s mental health through being treated appropriately and gaining healthy life experiences. However, returning the victim home may be the beginning of a new phase of challenges when the child is expected to reintegrate into the restructured family, reconnect with the mother, who may or may not behave differently, and to continue on the journey of further development. Social workers or counsellors, who have opportunities to accompany the victim and provide emotional infusion and hope for a long time, assist the victim in internalising their own experience and exploring internal positive resources that will help the victim face different life stages and challenges in the future. Therefore, by providing systemic services during and after placement, continued counseling to increase self-awareness, and the trust that is worthy of being loved, the victim can start to recover from trauma by converting experience into positive resources and abilities. These positive resources and abilities will make them stronger as they experience challenges and difficulties. To sum up, trauma recovery is a dynamic process with no endpoint or clear criteria. However, when victims look back on their lives, they will be emotionally overwhelmed and proud of their newborn lives.</p> <p> </p>

L’any 2021 un col·lectiu d’artistes va inaugurar a Girona una instal·lació que mereix una anàlisi detallada, donada la densitat de referències que presenta. El col·lectiu va titular la instal·lació Incerta via, un projecta on explícitament pretenien fer una recerca en les arrels espirituals de l’art, un plantejament que es posava de palès a les diverses parts de la instal·lació, organitzades com cinc etapes d’un procés. La intenció espiritual, segons la interpretació proposada a l’article, entronca amb els misteris de l’Antiguitat i amb l’hermetisme neoplatònic renaixentista, consistiria en estimular la imaginació per, amb aquesta, intuir una via d’ascens cap al món intel·ligible en termes platònics. Incerta via plantejava un recorregut físic per a, per analogia, traslladar-se a una geografia imaginal, una trajectòria física anàloga a la duta a terme per l’anima mundi platònica i que induís a l’experiència d’un procés de comprensió anímica. La manera de comunicar coneixement en aquesta dimensió és mitjançant imatges simbòliques enigmàtiques. Amb aquest horitzó cultural, objectius i experiències, la instal·lació actualitzaria els misteris de l’Antiguitat, replicaria idees de presocràtics, platòniques (Plató i neoplatònics com Plotí o Macrobi) i hermètiques (Corpus hermeticum) segons s’argumenta i es mostra a l’article.

Abstract Tandem rotor, as a concept, promises a higher diffusion capacity than a single rotor. However, it is reported to have a lower operating range than the conventional rotor. Inflow distortion can lead to significant changes in the flow dynamics of the axial-flow compressor. Further, a highly loaded tandem blade is likely to be severely affected due to the inflow distortions. In this study, circumferential distortion is imposed at the inlet of a tandem stage and its response is studied, using steady and unsteady probes. The performance characteristics and other aerodynamics parameters under the circumferential distortion are compared with the clean inflow case. As expected, the tandem stage experiences a significant drop in the total pressure rise and operating range under circumferential distortion. A large deficit in the total pressure, efficiency, and axial velocity is observed in the distorted region. The casing pressure traces, Morlet wavelet analysis, and Fast Fourier Transform techniques are used to analyze the unsteady data. The stall is incepted in the form of a low-intensity spike, which later evolved into a fully grown stall within 2.5 rotor revolutions. Further, the amplitude of the stall cell under the circumferential distortion is found to be higher than the clean flow.
