The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of mental health education in schools, specifically, teaching students the skills necessary to become emotionally regulated individuals. In response, many schools and school districts have made the development of social-emotional learning (SEL) a priority. To effectively meet students’ needs for SEL, teachers seek out readily available educational programs, such as the Zones of Regulation (ZOR) program. This autoethnography analyzes the personal experiences of four teacher-researchers in using the ZOR program. The teacher accounts identified common themes in SEL program implementation; a cohesive approach, teacher education, and administrative support are all essential for effective program delivery. The shared experiences underscore the importance of effective leadership practices in successful SEL program implementation. The conclusions drawn may be beneficial for school boards, school administration, and educational policymakers when making leadership decisions about SEL programming.

To better understand the institutionalization process in Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH) intervention and control schools, 199 key informant interviews were conducted with school food service staff, physical education teachers, classroom teachers, and administrators at the four CATCH-ON field centers. School personnel were asked to talk about the degree of CATCH program implementation, who at the school or school district was instrumental in promoting CATCH, and the conditions that facilitated or impeded the institutionalization of CATCH activities and philosophies. The CATCH Physical Education (PE) component appeared to have the highest level of institutionalization, and the CATCH classroom curriculum and family components appeared to have the lowest levels of institutionalization. The primary barriers expressed included the low priority for health promotion activities and time constraints of schools; lack of mechanisms for training of school staff; and lack of sufficient funds for materials, equipment, and lower fat vendor products.

Motivating parents and families to be involved in their children’s academic lives is a necessary component of literacy instruction. The study focused on family engagement and parental involvement. The researcher selected 300 parents among Grade VII students from Mambugan National High School, District 1 in Antipolo City to assess their awareness about the school’s family engagement program related to school climate, student learning, communication, volunteering, and decision making. It also aimed to determine the extent of their involvement in terms of the aspects enumerated, to test the relationship between their awareness on school family engagement programs and the extent of their involvement, and to use the results as inputs in developing a parent training program for family engagement. The researcher used a two-part Questionnaire Checklist assessing how parents perceive the school family engagement activities and rating the parents’ involvement in school family engagement program. Through data analysis using weighted mean and Pearson’s r, findings revealed that both the parents’ perception on school family engagement program and the extent of parental involvement yielded Student Learning as a top priority and the parents’ ultimate reason when they engage themselves in school-initiated programs that need their support. Furthermore, this study found out that there is a significant relationship between their awareness about school family engagement programs and the extent of their involvement in terms of school climate, student learning, communication, volunteering, and decision making.

Abstract Background In a recent school year, nearly 58,000 (10.5%) Kindergarten-Grade 12 students in British Columbia had a special needs designation, according to the BC Ministry of Education (BC MED) Student Statistics 2015/2016. Despite these considerable numbers, we know little about the educational journeys of students with special needs. To help set a research agenda in this area, we undertook a Research Priority Setting (RPS) study, which is an approach used in knowledge translation and exchange research. RPS is a relatively new approach, particularly in educational research, and is used to involve knowledge users early in the research process. It can include a diverse range of methods including surveys, workshops, and Delphi studies. As part of a larger research program to investigate the population-level educational journeys of students with special needs, we employed RPS. Objectives The purpose of this study was to explore educational leaders’ perspectives on research priorities in special education. The specific research questions were: 1. Given a pre-determined set of research areas based upon available population-level administrative data, what are educational leaders’ research priorities? 2. Which specific special education student groups (here, called designations) are educational leaders most interested in learning about through population-based research? 3. Beyond the available administrative data, what additional population-level research priorities do educational leaders identify? Design/Methods We employed a cross-sectional survey design. In December, 2017, we invited public school districts to participate in a survey we created to help us identify research priorities related to the educational journeys of students with special needs and disabilities. The specific needs the BC MED routinely tracks are presented with their respective designation codes in Table 1. The survey invited participants to rank eight specific research areas in order of perceived importance. Then, they were asked to indicate which of the 12 special needs designations were of most interest in relation to the research areas. Finally, the survey included an open-ended question inviting participants to suggest further areas for research. Quantitative results were analyzed using descriptive analyses, including frequency tables, cross-tabulations, and histograms. Qualitative data from the open-ended question was analyzed using content analysis. Results We asked a wide range of education professionals to complete this survey, including: district administrators, district learning support service providers, and school staff. In total, 71 participants volunteered to complete our survey, representing 43 of BC’s 60 public school districts. The average participant had: a master’s degree; a district administrator position; and between 20 and 29 years of educational experience. The majority of participants were experienced in special education. Overall, survey participants agreed on three specific priorities for future research on the educational journeys of students with special needs and disabilities: We then used approved BC MED data to prepare district-specific reports for each of these three topics, with province-wide data included for comparison. In each report, we break down students’ results by their BC MED special needs designation. Conclusion This study is an important step forward in our knowledge about the educational journeys of students with special needs. The results can be useful in guiding policy and program development, both here in British Columbia and beyond. Healthcare providers in pediatrics are in key roles to advocate for supports and resources for this population on their educational journeys.

Education is the most powerful instrument to change the society. The welfare and economic progress of a country depends on the quality of education because education refers to the development of human skill and knowledge of the people or labor force and education is called human capital. Different education policies during the post independent period focused primarily to improve the enrolment in the primary school in India. In order to access all children up to 14 years of age the different National Education Policies gave priority to universialization of elementary education program on different times and many initiatives like Operation Black Board, Mid-day Meal, Sarvashiksha Abhijan (SSA) and Right to Education Act. Uttar Dinajpur district is not an exception. Literacy and education of the district shows dismal picture and according to census report 2011the district has the lowest rank in the state. The district is an economically and educationally back ward district. The present paper is an attempt to study the enrolment trend at the elementary level in the government school and private schools in Uttar Dinajpur during the period 2012-13 to 2016-17 and enquiry into the problems relating to the learning outcomes of the children at the elementary level in government schools of the district. The empirical findings point out many problems such as poor academic performances of the students, wastage of teaching time on mid-day meal related works, irregular attendance of the teachers in the school, teacher-guardian meet, guardians choice regarding admission of their children , lack of parents awareness and use of mobile phone in the class room.

The research method used is qualitative descriptive. Data sources are derived from primary and secondary data. Data collection techniques are obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. Protection of children is an obligation of parents without discrimination because children need to live better wherever they are and must be guaranteed by all families and social environments, especially their parents. Children are vulnerable to violence, both from their age and from adult disorders. Violence against children, both women and men can occur in various environments, both in families, schools, and outside the home. Therefore, attention to child safety must be a priority carried out by parents, families and also the government, where it has been regulated or has official regulations in the form of law number 35 of 2014 so that no one can avoid criminal threats if there is violence against a child, it must be punished in accordance with applicable regulations. The results showed that the implementation of the Child decent District program policy in Gorontalo Regency has not been optimal due to low socialization carried out by the local government, lack of coordination between related agencies, and supervision of officers by agencies has not been effective, and efficient due to the lack of officers (HR), as well as inadequate facilities and infrastructure</em>.

Leadership training symbolizes one of the instructional tools that school leaders can employ in order to deliver quality education in lower primary grades in Zambia. The delivery of quality education has been reiterated by Zambia in the Vision 2030 whose objective is to offer all-encompassing and quality education to all children by the year 2030. The objective of this study was therefore to analyse how school leadership training could improve the management of lower primary grades in selected primary schools of Kafue district. In order to achieve the objective of the research, a qualitative, interpretivist approach was adopted. The research design was descriptive in nature. The sample size comprised twenty-four (24) respondents, who were drawn from three (03) primary schools, in Kafue District, Zambia. Overall, the research found that school leadership was critical in the management of lower primary school grades as such grades are the bedrock and foundation of the entire educational ladder. School leaders should provide academic, professional, moral, financial and social support to teachers in order to motivate them for school improvement and lower primary school results improvement. They should set directions, develop teachers and make the school organisation work through monitoring teacher preparedness and the learning activity. Based on the research findings, the primary recommendation of the research was that school head teachers, senior teachers and school in-service coordinators should ensure that Teacher Group Meetings (TGMs), Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and School Program of In-service for the Term (SPRINT) activities take place in their schools as they are a cost-effective way of raising teacher capacity and professional development. In addition, monitoring of teacher preparedness should be taken as a priority in order to improve results.

Background: Although there are now a number of evidence-based tobacco use cessation programs available for dissemination, almost all adolescent tobacco cessation research comprises efficacy and effectiveness studies. As a result, there is a need for more research to guide the scaling up of these programs. Methods: The current study utilized data from a cross-sectional sample of 205 administrators and tobacco prevention program coordinators in school districts and county offices of education throughout California, to explore factors that affect the adoption of tobacco cessation programs in schools. Results: We found that several characteristics of the community, organization and individual respondent were associated with the adoption of evidence-based tobacco cessation programs in schools, including identifying tobacco use prevention as a community priority, having school-level SUP coordinators, greater coordinator effort devoted to tobacco use prevention, having a program champion, and currently receiving TUPE funds (all ps < .05).Conclusions: Although the availability of dedicated tobacco education funds is an important factor in schools adopting tobacco cessation programs with proven effectiveness, our results suggest that strengthening education agencies' capacity to implement prevention programming, through dedicated resources and personnel, has the potential to lead to increased adoption of tobacco cessation programs.

The increase in slum areas between 2014-2019 by 132.58 hectares shows the need for more effective treatment, which focuses on improving social and economic aspects to prevent the emergence of new slum settlements. This study aims to identify the socio-economic characteristics of the community in the slum area and formulate a slum management strategy. The results showed that, in general, the socio-economic characteristics of the people in the slum areas were shallow, including the level of education, most of whom only graduated from elementary school, work as laborers and farmers, and income ranged from Rp. 800,000 - Rp. 1,400,000 per month, with most of the land they occupy without ownership documents or are illegal. However, there are several better socio-economic conditions, such as the head of the family mostly still productive, the density of occupancy, which is mostly still above 7m2, adequate drinking water and sanitation facilities, and ownership of mostly self-owned buildings. Strategies that can be implemented are to encourage the improvement of the socio-economic quality of the community, involve the community in slum handling actions, and make the slum eradication program a priority program of the regional government.

Background and purpose: Kulon Progo District is one of the 100 priority districts in Indonesia for stunting program with a prevalence of 22.65%. The purpose of this research is to identify association between mother's education, family income and exclusive breastfeeding history with stunting events in Kulon Progo District, Yogyakarta. Methods: This research used a cross sectional design which conducted in Kulon Progo District, Yogyakarta. There were 729 children aged 0-59 months recorded in the integrated service post (posyandu) who met the inclusion criteria. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire for children and mothers’ characteristics, while stunting status was retrieved from the growth monitoring card. Data analysis was conducted using Chi-Square test. Results: Children in the survey were 53.77% boys and around a quarter (24.69%) were at 25-36 months old. The majority of the mothers (72.98%) were between the ages of 26 and 35 years with high school education (67.35%) and most of them did not work (82.17%). Children with lower maternal education are less likely to experience stunting (PR=0.751; 95%CI: 0.593-0.952; p=0.013), and those from lower income family have almost five fold increased chance of stunting (PR=4.562; 95%CI: 2.643–7.874; p<0.001). Whilst for history of exclusive breastfeeding, the association was not statistically significant with stunting (PR=0.795; 95%CI: 0.529–1.196; p=0.239)Conclusion: There is a relationship between maternal and family education with the probability of stunting, while there is 20% reduced chance of stunting if children were breast fed although it was not statistically significant. Improving maternal awareness on stunting is essential for stunting management programs.

The main content of federal and regional programs for patriotic education of the citizens of the Russian Federation is targeted at work with school students, which puts emphasis on the analysis of young people opinion of these programs effectiveness. Basing on the data of the mass survey of senior school students in 10 regions of the Siberian Federal district, the article brings out their grounds for differentiating patriot and non-patriot, the comparative analysis of representations of these groups of pupils as about priority subjects of patriotic education and effective execution of its particular trends. The article has pointed out positive attitude of the majority of school students to anchoring patriotic values in youth environment through patriotic films. Young people have ambiguous attitude to the idea of compulsory patriotic education in schools and universities, and school students who do not identify themselves as patriots are negative about it. The participation of school students in patriotic events has been linked to their further self-identification as patriots. The authors emphasize that the formalized approach to working with young people leads in practice to a low level of their awareness of the content of the main directions of patriotic education, weak and not systematic involvement of schoolchildren in patriotic events and the work of patriotic associations. Based on the results of the study, the article concludes that there is a fairly large number of young people who do not share patriotic values and critically assess the effectiveness of many areas of patriotic education programs.

Kindergarten education is becoming a priority throughout the&nbsp;USA&nbsp;as research shows its importance on later in life outcomes. The State of Washington instated full-day kindergarten for all public-school students beginning in 2016&ndash;2017. It &ldquo;&hellip;is part of the state&rsquo;s constitutionally protected definition of &lsquo;Basic Education&rsquo;&rdquo; (Reykdal, n.d., n.p.), working to support all children in the state. Acting on this new state requirement, one school district chose to design and build&nbsp;a center dedicated solely to kindergarten education, housing approximately 600 kindergarteners. The school was divided into four &lsquo;neighborhood pods&rsquo; each with immediate access to specific activity programs (i.e., dining, interventionists, elective functions) reflecting a new &lsquo;expanded push-in&rsquo; model and reduce transition times. This model was compared with a &lsquo;traditionally&rsquo; operated kindergarten where learners travel to activity programs throughout a campus (i.e., dining, interventionists, electives). A human-centered research design using mixed-methods&nbsp;for this&nbsp;comparison study between an &lsquo;expanded push-in&rsquo; and a &lsquo;traditional&rsquo; model was used to understand the impact of this new architectural solution particularly focused on timing transitions between the classroom and activity program settings. Findings discovered a reduction in the length of transitions between accessing the programs by recaptured&nbsp;seven&nbsp;school days of learning time (approximately 45 hours),&nbsp;when compared to the traditional one, and more positive connections between students/students, teachers/teachers, and students/teachers to build community.

High poverty rural areas may have major implications for fidelity of implementation and measurement of intended impacts that raise important questions about project organizational structures, capacities and evaluation needs. Abstract: Nutritious and safe intake is a prerequisite for the growth and development of school-age children. Poor breakfast habits and snacks for school children that do not meet the requirements contribute significantly to the nutritional problems of school-age children. This is one of the priority health problems. Low achievement in the implementation of school children's nutrition programs has led to healthy breakfast and snack innovations workshops at one of the elementary schools in Sekarbela sub-district, Mataram city. The workshop participants included 50 people consisting of school-age children, parents, teachers, and canteen vendors. The workshop was guided by a nutritionist, and he explained the selection of nutritional intake, both through breakfast and snack. Also, participants were trained to practice a variety of healthy breakfast innovation menus. After the workshop, participants were able to practice and be actively involved in making a healthy breakfast innovation menu. The response of participants to the menu is quite good. After mentoring by a nutritionist, parents and teachers can solve the problems encountered. Cafeteria vendors get input regarding snacks supply after expert review. This workshop has been going well and has produced the results as targeted. Keywords: PJAS, healthy breakfast, workshop, school-age children.

In the current strategic documents focusing on improving the health status of the Hungarian population, the implementation of community health promotion programs to prevent diseases affecting children is highly recommended. School health promotion plays a key role in terms of the health of the younger generations and the health of the staff of educational institutions. That is why the Health Promotion Office (HPO) in the Nyíregyháza district treats the health promotion activities implemented at the school setting as a priority area of its work, which supports the implementation of the comprehensive school health promotion (TIE) concept as a EFI task. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the magnitude of the work carried out by HPO for school-aged children over the past five years, in the period between 2018 and 2022. The analysis of the data was based on HPO's self-edited event summary. The Office, which started operating in March 2018, served 29,076 clients with school-based health promotion community programs until December 2022 and provided opportunities for children attending educational institutions in the Nyíregyháza district to improve their health and raise health consciousness on 1,070 occasions. The employees of HPO developed and implemented 55 programs with different professional content, which primarily reflected the needs, and secondarily the local needs. The recorded data are not suitable for measuring the long-term effectiveness of the intervention, but it shows the magnitude of the work carried out in the field.

During the 1980s, school finance research in general, and research on fund distribution and equity issues in particular, has been in a depressed state, with little progress being made on either the substantive or the methodological fronts. There is a backlog of old issues requiring attention, and certain new finance issues are emerging, mainly in connection with current education reform efforts. The priority tasks to be undertaken in the next round of research would seem to include (a) upgrading the methods used to address the traditional core topic in school finance research, equity in the distribution of funds among school districts; (b) extending the research on fund distribution issues to deal with hitherto-neglected dimensions of finance, including allocations of funds by type of resource, by level of education and type of pupil, and by curricular area or program; and (c) initiating new research into the relationships between education finance and efforts to improve the schools. The research on the finance-reform relationship should deal not only with the financial implications of particular reforms but also with the broader question of how school finance systems can be used to facilitate reforms and stimulate better performance.

Quality assurance is a series of processes and related systems to collect, analyze, and report data on the performance and quality of educators and education personnel, programs and institutions. The quality assurance process identifies aspects of achievement and priority for improvement, provides data as a basis for planning and decision making and helps build a culture of continuous improvement. The achievement of the quality of education for primary and secondary education in Indonesia is assessed based on the eight National Education Standards of the BSNP. The regional autonomy policy has an impact on the management of education in the region. Efforts to standardize quality must be the focus of attention in an effort to maintain the quality of education nationally. The quality assurance and improvement system of primary and secondary education in Indonesia operates within an education management and government system that delegates most of the responsibility for implementation to provinces, districts, foundations and schools/madrasahs. Achievement of education quality for primary and secondary education is assessed based on the eight National Education Standards from the BSNP. the system of guaranteeing and improving the quality of education in elementary school education in Gajahmungkur District, Semarang City is related to three main aspects, namely: (1) Studying the concept of Education Quality Assurance, (2) Development of an effective education quality information system for management, decision making in assurance and improving the quality of education, and (3) Continuous Education Quality Assurance System through School Self Evaluation (EDS) to step into the education quality assurance process.

Background Improving the subject matter knowledge and pedagogical skills of teachers of mathematics and science is a key priority for many jurisdictions. Blended learning is a promising, yet so far seldom used model for supporting teacher professional development. This model combines the advantages of traditional face-to-face interaction with the flexibility of online learning. Purpose In this study, we examine two one-year professional development programs for middle-school mathematics and science/technology teachers that employed blended learning. The goal of our research was to understand how the program affected teacher attitudes toward and pedagogical practices in these subjects and on student perceptions and learning of the subjects. Participants Participants in the study were 68 mathematics and 65 science/technology teachers in grades 6, 7, and 8 in several school districts in a large urban center, along with their students: 477 students from the mathematics teachers’ classes and 551 from the science/technology teachers’ classes. Program The blended learning program, known as the Teacher eLearning Project (TeL), began at the start of the school year with a module that consisted of a daylong face-to-face session followed by an eight-week online session. The first year of TeL focused on the mathematics teachers who had a total of three modules to complete; in the second year, science/technology teachers had two modules. Research design We used Guskey's (2000) five-level evaluation framework to assess the impact of the programs on teachers’ attitudes and knowledge, institutional support for the programs, changes in classroom practices, and student perceptions and learning of the subjects. Data were obtained using a pre-post design that included surveys, classroom observations, and key informant interviews. Findings Overall our results indicate that the program appeared to influence positively teacher attitudes and content knowledge in certain curricular areas and motivated many to transform their classroom practice to varying degrees. Despite this, student responses were mixed: students viewed mathematics less favorably by the end of the program, but became more positively inclined towards science/technology. Conclusions The blended learning model shows potential for teacher professional development, although further research preferably through controlled studies is needed. Aspects that need to be examined further include the nature of the online tasks given to teachers, the role of the online facilitators, the impact on student achievement, and the implications of providing teachers with less release time than was available in this study.

While there is a widespread consensus that students’ pathways towards postsecondary education are influenced early in life, there is little research on the elementary school factors that shape them. Identifying educational ‘risk factors’ directs attention to barriers that may warrant scrutiny or action under human rights legislation. New findings from a unique, longitudinal data set collected and developed by the Toronto District School Board highlights key factors, established in elementary school, as to how many students do not enter into post-secondary studies in Ontario. The majority of students suspended at any time, students in self-contained special education programs, and/or students who missed more than 10% of classes in grade 4 do not go on to PSE. These organizational factors are more predictive of students’ acceptance to PSE than individualized measures of preschool readiness, academic achievement in grade 3, race or parental education. These structural ‘risks’ are strongly correlated with of race and disability. In light of research that identifies promising, evidence-based practices available to reduce these risks, breaking down these barriers should be a priority from the perspective of improving PSE access and overcoming what may well amount to systemic discrimination.

A systematic literature review and meta-analysis were conducted to identify and synthesize the group-design experimental literature on this topic, as well as evaluate intervention effects. Six studies met inclusion criteria and were included in the analyses. Adolescents who participated in self-advocacy curriculum interventions made significantly more contributions during IEP meetings compared with students in control groups. Given this information, school districts should consider implementing such curricula and making student attendance and participation at IEP meetings a top priority. However, additional high-quality research is needed to expand the evidence base for this practice for students with more severe disabilities.

Methods: We collected data on policy content through a desk review of national and subnational level nutrition-specific strategic plans, laws, regulations, and program guidelines. We then conducted 74 key informant interviews with policy makers and program experts in health, education, and related sectors using semistructured interview guides based on policy theory to examine policy context and implementation. The policy content and interview data were analyzed using thematic synthesis and narrative analysis. Results: Currently, 2 nutrition-specific policies and programs are designed to improve adolescent nutrition in Indonesia, one focusing on iron–folic acid supplementation for adolescent girls and another on obesity prevention and management in schools. These programs are yet to be implemented at scale. Overall, adolescent nutrition is not yet considered a priority in the national development agenda. An opportunity exists to improve action on adolescent nutrition in Indonesia through scaling up of district-level policies and through improving coordination mechanisms across sectors. Conclusions: Few policies and programs exist to support adolescent nutrition in Indonesia. Coordinated efforts across relevant sectors and levels of government should be made to mainstream adolescent nutrition into relevant policies.

One of the modern challenges for the Russian education system is the implementation of continuous professional development of teachers. The development of pedagogical excellence depends on a teacher's ability to self-analyze and selfevaluate his/her activity. The authors consider reflexion as a tool that helps teachers reflect upon their pedagogical reality and determine the future directions of professional development. Practice shows that not all teachers are able and willing to study the state and results of their work and, therefore, need help and support in matters of selfdiagnosis and professional development. For this reason a course for teachers in urban and rural schools in Perm region is being offered at the Center for Continuing Professional Development of Educators, under the additional education program «Designing a Teacher's Individual Educational Path in the Informational and Educational Space of the Region». The basis of this course is self-analysis of pedagogical activity and identification of priority areas for professional development of teachers. The article describes the methodology of evaluating professional competencies «Teacher Self-Assessment» developed by the teachers of the Department of Professional Mastery of this center. Increasing student literacy and environmental care for elementary and junior high school students is the theme of the Real Work Lecture/Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) Group 138 in Pematang Raya Village, Simalungun Regency. This paper aims to describe the community service activities carried out by Universitas Sumatera Utara students in KKN activities in increasing Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Outcome Base Education (MBKM-OBE) as a forum for providing opportunities for students to experience off campus, interact, identify social phenomena and provide solutions through Project Base Learning and Problem Solving for the community around the location of the Real Work Lecture/Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) carried out by the Community Service Institute of Universitas Sumatera Utara. From the results of observations and assessments of students, the priority scale of the problem is the lack of student literacy and low environmental awareness. The implementation method is carried out during the 2 months students are at the KKN location by making KKNT posts, learning houses and programs that have been compiled and run regularly every week for 2 months. The results of the 138 KKN group service can be seen in real changes, namely increasing student literacy to read as a means of filling spare time, doing homework independently and conscious activities to dispose of waste in its place, sorting organic and non-organic waste and being able to make simple compost.

Background Adolescents living with HIV are vulnerable to depression with a negative effect on treatment outcomes. However, there are little data on the factors associated with depression in adolescents with HIV infection in Rwanda. Aim This article aims to assess the prevalence and sociodemographic factors related to depression among adolescents living with HIV/AIDS. Methodology A cross sectional research was conducted with 102 adolescents living with HIV/AIDS. Depression was measured by Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-DC) in its latest version adapted to the context of Rwanda. Chi-square test and binary logistic regression were performed to determine the factors associated with depression. Results The prevalence of participants who had symptoms of depression was 31%. The risk to develop depression increased among HIV infected adolescent who did not attend school or who lived with another person who is not a parent or family member. Having both parents deceased increases the risk to develop depression by 25.07 times compared to when none of them is deceased. Conclusion The results have demonstrated that lack of social support is likely to raise the risk of development of depression symptoms among adolescent with HIV. It is clearly an urgent priority to implement programs that focus on provision and maintenance of psychosocial support to this group in order to reverse the situation. Success of the socio-economic development of a region is largely determined by the development level of its regional education system, primarily the higher education system. The current state of the regional economy and the need to implement the innovative scenario of economic development determine the requirements to improve the efficiency of personnel training. Current state programs for the development of education in the regions are mainly focused on the development of preschool, school and secondary vocational education. These programs do not take into account the leading role of higher educational institutions in creating and promoting innovations, in training highly qualified specialists. The need to ensure closer interaction between higher educational institutions located in the regions and the regional education system determines the relevance of the research topic. The aim of the study is to identify the peculiarities of interaction between regional programs for the development of education and higher educational institutions located in these regions. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the authors proposed new elements to the mechanism of interaction between regional development programs of education and higher education system of the region. PurposeAs school districts continue to devalue social studies through a narrowed focus on English language arts (ELA) and mathematics, this study investigated elements of curricular control in a district lacking a formal, purchased curricular program in the elementary grades. Without prescribed and scripted lessons, it was hypothesized that teacher autonomy would allow greater opportunities to investigate social studies concepts and skills.Design/methodology/approachWithout prescribed and scripted lessons, it was hypothesized that teacher autonomy would allow greater opportunities to investigate social studies concepts and skills. Bernstein's theory of pedagogic discourse guided this study's analysis of power and control. This manuscript describes a micro-level discourse analysis that applies Gee's tools on interview data from two teachers.FindingsFindings demonstrate some opportunities for teacher autonomy, but hierarchical control from administration persists and influences teacher decision-making. As researchers continue to argue for the increased presence of elementary social studies, this study demonstrates that the lack of a formal scripted curricular program presents opportunities for teachers, but administrative control endures and hinders teacher autonomy and instructional decision-making.Research limitations/implicationsThe data size and number of participants in this study may present limitations that impact generalizability. However, the focus for this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the messaging from two teachers. Comparability and translatability were identified as factors for research design to establish legitimacy (LeCompte and Preissle, 1993).Practical implicationsWhen considering implications from this study, two elements are considered. First, the continued devaluation of social studies persists, despite the implementation of Common Core standards. As a result, other measures must be investigated and implemented to ensure the subject is elevated to a more prominent position representative of its importance to a democracy. To accomplish this goal, teacher input and autonomy must also be respected to ensure a quality curriculum is utilized in the classroom. While teachers may exert control, albeit limited, in their instructional decision-making, many others are reliant on purchased programs that do not allow even this narrow classroom influence.Originality/valueIn this study, teachers' language use demonstrated external administrative control as well as autonomous decision-making. Their assigned schedule privileged ELA and math through the allocation of time. Moreover, administrators stated that social studies is not a priority, a sentiment counter to participants' values. Therefore, while they recognized the inherent benefit of the subject to their students, hierarchical power controlled the classification and framing of instruction. A weakened classification and framing structure must be sought to allow more opportunities for purposeful integration of content through messaging systems that are more responsive to students' needs.

This study examined the effectiveness of strategies used by school administration in protecting children from physical abuse in public secondary schools in the Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania. This was a study guided by the systems theory and approach by Bertalanffy, (1968). The theory articulates a set of specific structures, functions, capacities, and other related system components including input, process, and output. This study employed convergent mixed methods design which intended to collect both quantitative and qualitative data in one phase. Stratified, convenient, and purposeful sampling techniques were used to determine the study sample which consisted of 427 respondents. Questionnaires and an interview guide were used to collect the required information. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferentially using ANOVA. Tables, charts, narrations, and schemes of code were used to present the study findings. The study findings show that the strategies can be effective if they are used well, the most effective strategies were; Guidance and Counseling, Involvement of Stakeholders, Well informed Administration, and the Use of Child Policy, Law, rule, and reregulation. Other strategies suggested were the introduction of Life skill education, home visitation, and the use of student council. The study concluded that the strategies used by school administration in protecting children from sexual abuse are effective, however with some challenges that can be solved. The ANOVA findings conclude there are no significant differences between teachers' mean scores on rating the effective strategies used in protecting children from physical abuse based on years of experience. The study recommends Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should ensure effective and efficient use of existing strategies while ensuring close supervision and monitoring to reduce sexual abuse. But also in-service training should be done for all District Education officers, Heads masters/mistresses, and Discipline masters/mistresses, and lastly, teacher education programs in colleges and universities should be designed to ensure child protection is given priority.
