This thesis presents a theological exegesis of prayer in the four canonical Gospels.  The main focus is the theological anthropology of the prayer texts.  This aspect is described through a text-centred analysis of the “ideal pray-er” (Beter), one aspect of the implied audience.  The exegesis discusses the strategies used in the construction of such an ideal with regard to: a) teaching by Jesus; b) paradigmatic and unique aspects of the character of Jesus; c) ideals from the Old Testament; d) play on pre-knowledge; e) narrative progression; f) characterisation; g) eschatology.  As a result of this discussion a description of the ideal pray-er in the Gospels is presented.  Here the material is placed within a wider conceptual framework in a more theological and philosophical discussion.  In all the Gospels, it can be observed that a) prayer is a major way to respond to the Gospel in faith; b) prayer is offered on account of the salvific works of Jesus; c) pray-ers are to address God as “Father”; d) prayer is a sharing in God’s work; e) prayer is seen as a major part of the connection to the people of Israel and to the Temple; f) prayer is an expression of incompleteness and dependence; and finally, following from the previous point g) prayer is an expression of a basic eschatological outlook.  For general Gospel studies it can be seen that the prayer-teaching of John is not substantially different from that of the Synoptics.  Furthermore, the four canonical Gospels are constructed for those already initiated into faith and require accompanying tradition, praxis, and self-involvement for the communication on prayer to be felicitous.

Religion and spirituality has become a widely researched topic within the field of psychology, however most research studies focus on the quantitative measures of religion used as a coping mechanism for individuals undergoing difficulties and struggles. The terms religion and spirituality are often misunderstood in the field of psychology and used interchangeably. Individuals who share their religious/spiritual experiences are often dismissed and not taken seriously therefore exacerbating the stigma and creating even more distance between the field of science and religion. The goal of this research is to capture the lived experience of prayer for individuals moving through psychosis without enframing the experience in a negative way by placing labels or categories on them or their experiences, but rather by letting the experience show itself in its own unique way. Thus 3 participants who have experienced psychosis were asked about their experience of praying during a time that is typically understood as a psychotic experience. The purpose of this approach is to better understand how the practice of prayer in religion/spirituality is more than just an instrumental coping mechanism, and is, rather, lived out as a way of being in the world. This study uses an existential-phenomenological method to understand participants' experiences of this phenomenon in light of common, existential givens shared by the participants. This study will close with implications for further research and clinical care.

The fundamental premise of this work is that the meaning of a Biblical text is the history of its meaning. The interpreter must take note of the experience in which a text originated, and the settings in which it has been encountered. This essay surveys the ‘history of effects’ (Wirkungsgeschichte) of the Lord’s Prayer from the time of Jesus Christ until the beginning of the third century. In the beginning chapters, significant attention is devoted to the context of prayer in first-century Palestine and the continuity between the Lord’s Prayer and Jewish tradition. Subsequent chapters survey the presentation of the Lord’s Prayer in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the Didache, and Tertullian’s De oratione. Each stage of interpretation is evaluated in the light of its continuity and discontinuity with its anterior history of reception. This work concludes with an evaluation of how the notions of diachronic creativity and synchronic continuity illuminate the progressive interpretations of the Lord’s Prayer during the period under consideration.

The implementation of Virtual Environments has often been used within the educational domain. This study adopts a Virtual Environment (VE) setting to enhance and develop the physical aspects of teaching the Islamic prayer to primary school children, in comparison to traditional forms of teaching through a prayer book and prayer video. An interactive teaching Software, the interactive Islamic Prayer (iIP), was designed and developed for this purpose and uses technology by Microsoft’s Microsoft Kinect 360 for Windows to demonstrate the various movements of the prayer in sequence. Through the administration of a number of questionnaires, a quantitative analysis of the participants’ learning experience were identified, as well as details over which approach the participants preferred. The questionnaires also provided a detailed insight into six areas of study from the learners’ perspective when using the various learning approaches: comprehension, learning experience, interaction, satisfaction, usability and achievement. The results revealed a higher degree of interaction within the lesson on prayer when using the iIP compared to the traditional teaching methods, and although some were unfamiliar with using the Microsoft Kinect 360, on the whole, they found it to be fun and educational. The findings also showed that the software was able to focus on lower level thinking skills, such as recalling information and memory, as a test of the students’ knowledge on the prayer before and after using the software showed a significant improvement in comparison to the other approaches. Recommendations have been given on how to effectively implement this software within these relevant classrooms.

Practices that cultivate healthy relationships with self and others are always needed and valuable, especially during this modern time of ever-increasing fragmentation through technology. Cultivating empathy individually and communally promotes increased levels of connection among individuals and can create greater harmony among communities. Centering prayer offers an intervention that respects Christian practices of contemplation and can address care needs. This study investigated the impact of centering prayer on levels of empathy. This study was conducted through a single group pilot study using a mixed methods design. Given that centering prayer is primarily a Christian practice of contemplation, the population for this study was a Christian church community. Both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered to create a greater understanding of possible applications for centering prayer. The initial findings from this study support centering prayer as a positive intervention to help build psychological and emotional tools of empathy that can be added to church community offerings or Christian organizations.

The Lord’s Prayer and Sermon on the Mount continue to be some of the most studied passages in the field of New Testament studies. Yet, the full import of these two passages has been missed, particularly as they are found together in Matthew’s Gospel. In Matthew’s Gospel, the Lord’s Prayer is in the centre of the Sermon on the Mount. The centrality of the Lord’s Prayer has been noted by commentators, but without clearly defining this centrality and without establishing the centrality’s intended purpose. In the following thesis, we set about the task of defining the Prayer’s centrality and showing how this centrality affects our reading of the Sermon on the Mount and subsequently, the Lord’s Prayer. To this end, we will argue that the Lord’s Prayer is structurally, lexically, and thematically central to the Sermon on the Mount and the means through which the disciple of Jesus is empowered to live out the kingdom righteousness defined by the Sermon on the Mount. In turn, the Sermon on the Mount clarifies what the answer to the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer might look like in the life of the disciple of Jesus.
