Um sich selbst und sein Leben zu gestalten, bedarf es der Askese im antiken Sinne des Wortes - die Übung, mit deren Hilfe der Mensch sich und sein eigenes Leben gestaltet. Der in der ethischen Debatte weithin vernachlässigte ethisch-philosophische Grundbegriff der Askese, oder der selbstpraktischen Einübung von Handlungs- und Verhaltensweisen, wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit ins Auge gefaßt. Anhand zweier Philosophien wie sie unterschiedlicher kaum sein könnten, wird der Begriff und die Praxis der Askese systematisch untersucht und zur Darstellung gebracht. Die beiden herangezogenen Philosophien sind die praktische Philosophie des Aristoteles in den Ethiken und der Politik, sowie Michel Foucaults Vorlesungen, die er am Collège de France seit 1972 gehalten hat, unter Hinzuziehung einiger seiner Schriften, in denen Askese und Selbstgestaltung des »sujet moral« eine zentrale Rolle spielen.
Einleitend werden Begriff, hauptsächliche Spielarten und Bestandteile der Askese eingeführt und unterschieden. Es geht um die Askese der auf sich selbst achtenden Zuwendung des Subjekts zur Welt und um Ausbildung einer Möglichkeit, sein Leben selbst in die Hand zu nehmen und zu gestalten - im Unterschied zum gängigen Bild der Askese als Verneinung, Enthaltung und Abkehr. Dabei werden sowohl bei Aristoteles als auch Foucault fünf Thesen über Askese erarbeitet und festgehalten: (1) Askese ist nicht lustverneinend, sondern als ein Weg zur Freude und Lust an der persönlichen Lebensführung zu verstehen. (2) Dennoch ist Askese kein Selbstzweck, sondern immer Mittel zum Zweck, da sie nur eine Wegbreitung zu adoptierten Zielen und Gütern zu befestigen vermag, aber diese nicht ersetzt. (3) Askese ist keine Technik, wofür sie oft gehalten wird, sondern wesentlich Praxis, denn sie hat es mit Übungen zu tun, die durch ihre Wirkung auf den Übenden selbst gekennzeichnet sind. (4) Auch wird der Asket bei beiden Philosophen in der Gemeinschaft verortet. Wer sich asketisch formt, bedarf der anderen: zur Verständigung über das Gute, um am anderen tätig zu werden sowie als Spiegel seiner selbst. Denn beiden Denkern ist gemein, daß es keinen epistemologischen Zugang zur praktischen Wahrheit gibt, der einmal erkannt und verstanden, wahrhaft gutes Handeln garantieren könne. (5) Entsprechend ist keine Askese möglich ohne fortwährend reflektierte, begleitende Selbstbeobachtung und -korrektur und verlangt steuernde Aufmerksamkeit und klare Vernunft. Deshalb hat sie sowohl bei Aristoteles als auch bei Foucault mit Freiheit zu tun und erhöht, wenn sie gelingt, entscheidend das Freiheitsmoment persönlichen Handelns. Asketisch gestaltet sich der Mensch als Urheber seiner Handlungs- und Seinsweise, seiner Lebensweise.

This study explores the meaning of praxis in nursing programs at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. My inquiry arose from teaching praxis seminars, where I discovered that there was little consistency in its meaning by consulting colleagues, by researching university archives, and by reviewing the nursing literature. Through a philosophical exploration, however, I learned that praxis involves making moral decisions about how to act well in the world, making praxis a key concern for nursing educators in their efforts to foster such conduct. Praxis, so understood, involves embracing the particulars of the situation and their relationship to universals.
My confusion about praxis was, in part, explained by the 2400-year history of the concept. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were all concerned with ethical action and the relationship between knowledge and experience (the general and particular), but each with a different emphasis. Plato emphasized the acquisition of certain forms of knowledge in helping people to act well; Aristotle claimed that ethical conduct (understood as praxis) depends partly on experience in the world. Over the centuries either Plato or Aristotle’s formulation has been preferred at different times.
I have relied largely on the work of the neo-Aristotelian Hans-Georg Gadamer who develops a philosophical hermeneutics circle for praxis, especially the idea of how the general, shaped by our history and traditions, can be dialectically connected to the particular, that is, our experiences, by dialogue. I have critically analyzed dialogues from my practice using the concepts and conditions of understanding proposed by Gadamer.
Gadamer provides important resources that can assist nursing educators and nurses in understanding nursing practice as moral action. A Gadamerian approach encourages nurse educators to be alert to the differences in our students and their prior experience and knowledge as they approach interpretive encounters. It requires operating in the space between the particular and the general through dialogue. We can create this space and the curiosity to address moral issues that nurses confront in their practice of praxis by asking questions that support students’ understanding, motivations and prejudices, and by being humble about our conclusions.

Diese Grundtendenzen sind unter dem Aspekt des Erhalts bzw. einer Steigerung der wirtschaftlich-technologischen Leistungsfähigkeit Deutschlands im Allgemeinen und Sachsens im Besonderen kritisch zu bewerten. Qualifizierte, jüngere Bevölkerungsgruppen spielen für Forschung, Innovation sowie Wissens- und Technologietransfer eine Schlüsselrolle (Sode & Tolciu, 2011, S. 6).[...] Insbesondere in den Ingenieurwissenschaften zeichnet sich ein zunehmender Nachwuchsbedarf ab (Hetze, 2011, S. 4). Der Beitrag klärt die Verwendung und Bedeutung des Begriffs der Praxis in der musikdidaktischen Literatur. Zunächst werden hierfür die Praxisbegriffe der deutschsprachigen Autoren H. J. Kaiser, J. Vogt, Ch. Wallbaum und Ch. Rolle sowie der englischsprachigen Autoren Th. A. Regelski, D. J. Elliott und Ch. Small anhand relevanter Primärliteratur herausgearbeitet und dargestellt. In einem zweiten Schritt werden die Theorien und Modelle jeweils auf ihre didaktischen Implikationen hin untersucht und ihre Eignung für die Umsetzung im Hinblick auf eine reale Lehr-Lern-Situation eingeschätzt. Schließlich werden die Praxisbegriffe der sieben behandelten Autoren in Relation zueinander gebracht, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede aufgezeigt. Entsprechungen bezüglich des Verständnisses von Praxis werden konstatiert insbesondere zwischen Regelski, Kaiser und Vogt einerseits, sowie zwischen Small, Elliott, Wallbaum und Rolle andererseits. Erstere rekurrieren auf aristotelische Begrifflichkeiten und fokussieren den ethischen Aspekt einer praxis, das „richtige“ Handeln bzw. „gute“ Leben; Letztere stellen die durch musikalische Praxis mögliche (positive) Erfahrung des „flow“ (Elliott), des Ästhetischen (Rolle; Wallbaum) bzw. idealer Beziehungen (Small) in den Mittelpunkt ihrer BetrachtungenThis work discusses the use and meaning of “praxis” (practice) as a technical term in music education literature. Revisorsbranschen har under senare år kantats av en rad stora skandaler vilket lett till ett bristande förtroende för revisorer. Det har sedan 1970-talet flitigt diskuterats om det finns ett förväntningsgap mellan revisorer och övriga intressenter, det vill säga om revisorerna och intressenterna har olika uppfattning om vad revisorn ska prestera. Flertalet studier tyder på att ett förväntningsgap existerar och att revisorns roll är svår att förstå. Att revisorn har att följa ett omfattande nätverk av regler och standarder tros vara en bidragande faktor till detta. Denna uppsats syftar till att undersöka om det föreligger ett förväntningsgap i svensk rättspraxis. För att studera detta har rättsfall samt disciplinärenden mot revisorer, vars handlande har ifrågasatts, studerats. Dessa analyserades mot en analysmodell som utformats genom att dela upp revisorsyrket i kategorierna revisorns kunskap, revisorns roll och generell inställning mot professionen. Slutsatsen visar att det finns ett glapp avseende vad revisorn presterat och domstolens samt Revisorsnämndens bedömning avseende samtliga kategorier och förväntningsgapet avseende revisorns prestation och rättskiparens uppfattning anses omfattande.

In today’s neoliberal higher education landscape this is often reflected through “value” and “return on investment.” Given the fraught purposes of assessment in higher education, what would critical assessment look like in practice? Cette thèse sur le mouvement artistique Fluxus propose d’approfondir la connaissance du rôle des différents acteurs qui y ont participé. Nous y trouvons également des éléments de significations sur cette avant-garde qui marque le paysage culturel de part et d’autre de l’atlantique depuis les années soixante. Après une courte description du rôle fondamental des prédécesseurs du mouvement, comme John Cage, le contexte se poursuit par l’expérience même de l’auteur de cette thèse. Un parcours atypique qui mélange théorie et praxis, à la fois critique d’art et artiste Fluxus. Une vie entière vouée, submergée par Fluxus. Viennent ensuite neuf interviews échelonnées de 1974 à 2008. Avec un document exceptionnel : l’entretien de 1974 avec George Maciunas (‘l’inventeur de Fluxus’) serait l’un des trois seuls réalisés. Les autres concernent certains des grands acteurs de Fluxus (Wolf Vostell, Nam June Paik, Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono, Ben Vautier, Eric Andersen et Ben Patterson). L’esprit qui a fait naître Fluxus est abordé sous l’angle du ‘tournant conceptuel’, partie théorique par excellence, partagé par George Brecht, La Monte Young puis Henry Flynt. We can also find significant elements in relation with this Avant-garde that has marked the cultural scene in the sixties on either side of the Atlantic and beyond as well. After a brief exploration of the fundamental role of John Cage, the context carries on with the self-experience of the author of this thesis. An atypical way of being, for he mixes theory and praxis and at the same time he is an art critic and Fluxus artist. A whole life dedicated to Fluxus, overwhelmed by Fluxus. Then come nine interviews spread out from 1974 until 2008. With an exceptional document since the 1974 interview with George Maciunas (the “inventor” of Fluxus) is one of the only three ever made. The other interviews refer to some of the great actors of Fluxus, such as Wolf Vostell, Nam June Paik, Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono, Ben Vautier, Eric Andersen and Ben Patterson. The spirit from which Fluxus arose is taken under the angle of the “conceptual turning point”, the theoretical part par excellence, shared by George Brecht and La Monte Young and later by Henry Flynt. The Fluxus part is granted to Maciunas, who has crystallised all these strong and yet disparate ideas, into a model “Art for Artists”. The constituent forms of Fluxus, the Fluxus concerts are largely described, putting back Fluxus into a lineage : a tradition of historical Avant-gardes at the beginning of the twentieth century

Any realistically founded analysis of reading must take into account and clarify the universe of the reader in its reciprocal relation to the universe of the text. Empirical reading is characterized by its reliance on spontaneous thinking. It is thus made dependent on subconscious mechanisms that all involve duality. This duality can either be reactive (each term of the relation being defined by its antinomy to the other) or reversible (the two poles establishing a relation of correspondence paradoxically based on what differenciates them). Reactivity and reversibility are the two invariants which rule the domain of the text (the corpus) and of the reader (the lectus). The "corpus" comprises the generic repertoire actualized in the text; the neologism "lectus" stands first for the socio-cultural habitus of the reader and second for his acquired corpus. In his deciphering of the text, the reader concretizes the corpus actualized in the text, on the basis of his present lectus. This concretization is shaped and impelled by the processes of "moralysis", being the innate tendency of each individual to attribute a positive or negative value to each object or idea he perceives. Hence the double nature of ideology. Ideology is originally perceptual: it is constructed by the individual in the moment when he perceives the world around him. The material that goes into such a construction composes contextual ideology. The two stand in unceasing retroaction each to the other. Due to

Als nächster Schritt wird das Obergeschoss für das Stadtmuseum nutzbar gemacht werden.

On the assumption that "praxis" should and could be, but is not yet a meaningful working concept of sociology, the argument is directed to initiating the search for an appropriate meaning of praxis from amongst those meanings existing (implicitly or explicitly) in social/political theories. The question of the meaning(s) of praxis is approached on the basis of the argument that praxis is an all-encompassing concept; i.e., its meaning is inseparable from, and therefore encompassing of, an underlying theoretical structure. The argument implies, therefore, a correct strategy for finding an appropriate praxis for sociology: one which exposes the "constitutive assumptions"—the ontological, epistemological, and axiological components—within which the particular concept is couched. The argument, therefore, challenges the commonly held assumption (in sociology) that praxis is synonymous with Marxist critical/ humanist philosophy.
Two normative concepts of praxis-—the alternatives to the scientific Marxist concept which the thesis argues for—are discussed (and "tested" in the substantive context of the social program, newSTART) and are evaluated as being inappropriate concepts to inform a praxis sociology. Arendt's normative concept, however, is deemed adequate as a philosophical concept and does serve as a plausible alternative to praxis as a scientific sociological concept. Habermas's concept of praxis is introduced because it provides a theoretically credible challenge to Arendt's concept and also offers a viable concept for sociology; but because it is (arguably) couched in a "normative theory of efficiency", it is located within a functionalist sociological paradigm, thus undermining the potential of praxis to express its emancipatory content in meaningful social action.
The theoretical structure of a Marxist science is taken as the correct starting point for the formation of a praxis sociology because it is the only existing model that can challenge Arendt's philosophical praxis while retaining the potential to express the meaningfulness of praxis. However, because of the determinism inherent in this position, which results in a conflation of teleology with axiology, its potential to express the meaningful content of praxis as human agency is negated. This, however, is only a transient "failure" of Marxist science, and two further theoretical positions are outlined—in the work of Carchedi and Bhaskar—which promise to rectify the shortcomings of the scientific Marxist approach and establish a valid concept of praxis.Arts, Faculty of

This inquiry examines the relationship between studio drawing instruction and art theory, by reviewing practical and theoretical art books, questioning peers, and conducting a focus group encounter. The resulting data, interpreted in light of 25 years of teaching experience, suggests that the chronology of exercises in all the reviewed drawing texts encourages a widespread use of outlining at the expense of a concentration on rendering mass and volume.In response to changing demands on art teachers, the author proposes an outline for an updated studio drawing manual which synthesizes theory and practice by addressing compatible themes, and proposes a chronology of effective exercises which enhance student understanding and capacity to render volume and mass. The author concludes that the field of teaching drawing can be expanded to reflect visual, spiritual and ethical concerns, and that reestablishing the primacy of the visual to the teaching of the visual arts is best achieved in a hospitable setting where the standards and validity of the discipline can be established according to visual criteria, and not remote theory.

In der Mitte der Dissertation steht die Frage nach den Koordinationsmustern und den institutionellen Bedingungen online-medialen gelingenden, produktiven, also das Generieren informationeller Güter bezweckenden, Zusammenarbeitens. Diese wird exemplarisch und exponiert am Beispiel der freien Gemeingüterproduktion studiert, genauer gesagt am Fall der Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia.
Die Studie zeigt, wie und in welchen institutionellen Kontexten das Herstellen und Verwalten informationeller Gemeingüter durch online-medial vermitteltes Kooperieren gelingen kann. Dazu wurde eine dreijährige teilnehmende Beobachtung durchgeführt und mit qualitativen Interviews und Dokumentenanalysen methodisch kombiniert.
Typologisiert wurden die Beteiligungsweisen, die es Wikipedianern erlauben, an dem Projekt konstruktiv teilzunehmen, konkret die Handlungsmuster, um Beteiligen zu formieren und dabei unbezahltes und zielorientiertes Editieren zu animieren, anzuleiten und vorzulegen, sowie Handlungsmuster des Qualifizierens von Beiträgen und Beiträgern als Beobachten, Auszeichnen und Ausschließen. Das dabei effektive institutionelle Ensemble wurde als Satz an Richtlinien und Codevorgaben sowie normativen Einstellungen in Bezug auf das Arbeitsethos der Wikipedianer, die Form ihrer Vergemeinschaftung, das Teilnehmerkonzept und das enzyklopädische Werkkonzept ermittelt.

CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOA reivindicação que Gadamer faz de um caráter prático para a hermenêutica filosófica se deve, em grande parte, a uma releitura da filosofia prática de Aristóteles - tendo como principal referência o livro VI da Ética a Nicômaco - fortemente influenciada pela leitura ontológica proposta por Martin Heidegger. A retomada das noções aristotélicas, principalmente, de práxis e phronesis, oferece a Gadamer a possibilidade de realçar uma implicação ético-política no cerne da questão da compreensão. Esta última passará a ser pensada nos termos da interpretaçãoaplicação que ocorre no âmbito da vida prática, onde toda compreensão encontra-se operante enquanto dimensão fundamental de todo lidar com as coisas. Por essa razão, a relação entre hermenêutica e práxis abre um âmbito de reflexão e discussão que tem como principal objetivo um engajamento em defesa da razão prática, em detrimento da consideração de que toda racionalidade deve se apresentar, fundamentalmente, como lógico-científica. Deste modo, visamos com este trabalho refletir sobre a questão da práxis tal como pensada por Gadamer, apontando para uma pretensão filosófica fundamental: a defesa de uma universalidade para sua ontologia da compreensão. Para Gadamer, pensar uma hermenêutica filosófica é pensar a experiência universal de compreensão mútua que é inseparável do acontecer da vida em comum. É este o âmbito, a um só tempo, compreensivo e prático da sua hermenêutica filosófica.
Gadamer s claim of a practical character involved in philosophical hermeneutics is based, to a large extent, on a rereading of Aristotle s practical philosophy - having as a main reference, the sixth book of the Nicomachean Ethics - strongly influenced by Heidegger s ontological reading of Aristotle. The reappropriation of Aristotelian concepts, mainly, of praxis and phronesis, offers the possibility of bringing to light the existence of an ethical-political implication within the center of the question of understanding. Such a question turns to be thought in terms of the happening of interpretation-application that takes place in the scope of practical life where all understanding finds itself already operative in the commerce with things in general. In this way, the relation between hermeneutics and praxis opens a scope of reflection and discussion that has, as a main objective, an engagement in favor of practical reason, in contrast with logical-scientific arguments. In this way, our aim in this work is to approach the question of praxis such as thought by Gadamer, in the light of a basic philosophical aim: his claim of universality to his ontology of understanding. For Gadamer, the thought of philosophical hermeneutics is the thought of the universal experience of mutual understanding that is inseparable from the happening of communitarian life. Such a realm is, the comprehensive as well as practical one of his philosophical hermeneutics.

It is a relatively uncontroversial observation that huge advances in our scientific understanding of the ‘issues’ constitutive of our environmental crisis haven’t brought about the requisite attitudinal and behavioural changes to disrupt them at root. In this thesis, I pursue the suspicion that this problem may be traced back, in part, to the violence already implicit in the limited, objectivistic, and often dualistic models that natural scientists offer of those ‘issues’ and the more-than-human world more broadly. Since tackling the behavioural and attitudinal violence of our crisis situation also requires tackling the conceptual violence implicit in the basic terms of debate, I argue, then a specifically Merleau-Pontian ecophenomenology is uniquely well-equipped to attend to the task in hand. I begin by exploring the benefits of using phenomenological tools to disrupt the scientific naturalist stronghold on ontological and epistemological matters where the more-than-human world is concerned. Scientific naturalism’s problems appear to derive from its inability to fully acknowledge the intentional salience of the scientist’s situated embodiment to the phenomena she encounters and only subsequently carves up according to certain (meta-)theoretical assumptions and exclusionary apparatuses. By establishing a keener focus on the epistemic primacy of one’s phenomenological opening, I argue, a Merleau-Pontian ecophenomenology (suitably informed by ecofeminist and new materialist insights) promotes attention to a richer range of ontologically real phenomena than might be otherwise admitted. Moreover, whilst such an ecophenomenology needn’t be entirely hostile to important scientific insights about ‘environmental issues’, it may also foster a heightened kind of critical self-reflexivity about the problematic commitments and sedimented assumptions which underwrite them. Thus, by engaging with the environmental crisis ecophenomenologically, I argue, we may begin to disrupt the colonial violence which underpins it. I then defend Merleau-Pontian ecophenomenology against various iterations of the charge of ‘correlationism’, which holds that, insofar as they retain an ‘introverted’ focus on situated experience, ecophenomenologists themselves effectively subsume the more-than-human world into a problematically violent anthropocentric or androcentric purview. Since Merleau-Pontian ecophenomenologists deny the basic ontological presuppositions which underpin the charge, however, I argue that it is misdirected. Moreover, by acknowledging the indissoluble tension between one’s immanence and the more transcendental claims one might wish to make about the more-than-human world, Merleau-Pontian ecophenomenologists may establish a more fruitful praxis of critical self-reflexivity than their less phenomenologically-inclined peers. Over the final two chapters, I substantiate this claim with reference to how Merleau-Ponty’s later ontological turn (which aims to mitigate this tension) proves a retrograde one in terms of the onto-epistemological humility which is most valuable about the ecophenomenological project.

Many professional traders, hedgers, and institutional investors utilise spread trading to engage in the futures market. Most of the literature dedicated to futures spreads was published between the late 1970s and early 1990s, and has partly lost its relevance. This is because of the emergence of new financial instruments, changed relationships and regulations within the financial industry and, furthermore, the advent of round-the-clock electronic trading which has increased the number of players and liquidity of futures markets many times over (Hull, 2006). Hence, there is a need to explore futures spreads from a contemporary perspective. The six publications which form the basis of this PhD examine futures spreads from different perspectives. They address questions surrounding spreads systematisation, classification and analysis. The thesis develops a new framework for futures spreads analysis which has practical application as an investment tool. This thesis makes a contribution to theory and practice in the area of futures spreads. The research results could find wide application in the futures industry and of interest to the research community.

The aim of this research project is to investigate the practical application of some ideas regarding how dancers can create certain types of mental images that are formed through their kinesthetic perception, which we shall define as ‘kinesthetic images’, and to study the spatial or geometric structures that are often utilized in choreographic and pedagogical dance praxis. The term kinesthetic image is a label for a certain types of mental imagery that are generated through the sensation of moving body, as well as dynamic qualities that are kinesthetically perceived from movement. Dancers can create mental images from these type of kinesthetic experiences by enhancing their sensory awareness and sensorimotor knowledge, which are both innate and acquired through training. My dance practice also concerns a development of an improvisation method in which dancers explore an interaction between these kinesthetic images and a visualization of morphodynamic volume (hereafter MDV), which is a three-dimensional volume in a constant state of flux. The term intensive space will be introduced to give a definition to this related type of spatial categorization, one which involves continuous and dynamic transformations of both danced space and the images associated with it, such as stretching, folding and connectivity. This spatial paradigm will be contrasted with its opposite, namely extensive spaces or geometries, which involve the division and subdivision of danced space in terms of metric properties like points, lines, and planes. The first chapter is a review of how choreographically structured movement has been historically conceived and created using spatial concepts and imagery which involve the spatial structures of these types of extensive geometries. This historical analysis commences during the Enlightenment, at a time when the aesthetics and basic movement vocabulary of classical ballet were in a state of genesis. The discussion of geometric paradigms in dance practice continues through this chapter chronologically through to modernity, looking at the characteristics of the choreographic practices of George Balanchine, Rudolf Laban, Merce Cunningham, and William Forsythe. The second chapter discusses the Improvisation Technologies conceived by Forsythe as a paradigmatic example of the utilization of kinesthetic images and extensive geometry for the purposes of movement creation during dancers’ improvisation. This analysis of Forsythe’s methodology brings forth with it questions as to how choreographic praxis can utilize intensive space as an alternative geometric paradigm with which dancers can interact for the generation of movement. This discussion is rooted in some theoretical elements, such as phenomenology, the philosophy of perception, cognitive science, and mathematical topology, which creates a theoretical foundation for an improvisational practice that suggests intensive spatial structure as an alternative ideational mechanism for movement generation. The third chapter is a documentation of the chronological development of a pedagogical improvisation method, based on these concepts of kinesthetic imagery and intensive spatial structuring. For the purposes of investigating both choreographic and pedagogical aspects, an extensive period of practice-based research resulted in the production of two improvisatory performances entitled Mix:01 and Mix:02. These performances are discussed and are coupled with the critical observation of the preceding series of studio sessions. Both the performances and the creative processes that led to them are subsequently analysed for the purposes of isolating effective practice.
