Vallen, Michael Earl. "Housing...the Hillside, Los Angeles, California". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36539.

Streszczenie:
This Thesis is a proposal for a prototypical hillside housing community in Los Angeles, California. As a prototype it is responsible for setting an architectural precedent. In this effort, the Thesis continues with focus on issues of construction methodology, urban planning, and land use relationships concerning the present city. Being clear and uncomplicated is the driving force of this architectural process. On the horizon is the 21st Century. Architecture has become increasingly convoluted rather than enlightened. Here, I have focused my attentions on developing a technologically based, material-driven, compassionate solution to answer the issue of housing on the hillsides of Los Angeles. I have realized a clear system of building using uncomplicated technology and material. However, as demonstrated, this system of building provides only an envelope for space definition. It becomes the architectural precedent, a canvas, through which the inhabitant can define his existence. Enlightened limitations.

Gutierrez, Masini Jessica Margarita. "Native American Indigeneity through Danza in University of California Powwows| A Decolonized Approach". Thesis, University of California, Riverside, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10935692.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:

Since the mid-1970s, the indigenous ritual dance known as Danza has had a profound impact on the self-identification and concept of space in Xicana communities, but how is this practice received in the powwow space? My project broadly explores how studentorganized powwows at UC Davis, UC Riverside, and UC San Diego (UCSD), are decolonizing spaces for teaching and learning about Native American identities. Drawing on Beverly Diamond’s alliance studies approach (2007), which illuminates the importance of social relationships across space and time, as well as my engagement in these powwows, I trace real and imagined connections between Danza and powwow cultures. Today, powwows are intertribal social events organized by committees and coordinated with their local native communities. Powwows not only have restorative abilities to create community for those who perform, attend, and coordinate them, but they are only a small glimpse of the broader socio-political networks that take place throughout the powwow circuit. By inviting and opening the powwow space to indigeneity across borders, the University of California not only accurately reflects its own native student body who put on the event, but speak to the growing understanding of "Native American" both north and south of the United States border. Ultimately, I argue an alliance studies approach to historical ethnography and community-based methodologies in music research are crucial, especially in the case of indigenous communities, who are committed to the survival and production of cultural knowledge embedded in music and dance practices.

Obenson, Tanyi. "Carbon-Storing Trees and Particulate Matter Reduction in Los Angeles, California". ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4749.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Air pollution is a major concern in heavily populated cities such as Los-Angeles, California. Particulate Matter (PM) pollution in Hispanic and Black American neighborhoods in Los Angeles tends to be higher than adjacent non-minority areas. Research has indicated that certain carbon-storing trees can be used to reduce PM pollution. The purpose of this qualitative, interview research project was to determine the feasibility of using carbon-storing trees to reduce PM pollution in Hispanic and Black American neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Using an ecological theoretical framework, 10 subject matter experts were interviewed about their knowledge of carbon-storing properties and the feasibility of planting 10 different types of trees to reduce PM in the target neighborhoods. The results indicated that oak and pine trees are the most feasible in accomplishing PM reduction within the target areas based on factors like leaf structure, size, and adaptation to Southern California climate and soil. The least feasible trees included California sycamore, Fremont cottonwood, ox horn bamboos, American sweetgum, and yellow poplar. Public health officials may use this study's findings to bring social change to communities by encouraging the development and implementation of tree planting plans that may reduce PM pollution for all populations across the United States. The responsibility of implementing a tree planting strategy would be up to city planners and public health officials (stakeholders) in affected communities. To accomplish this, stakeholders would need to determine the financial costs and specific locations for planting oak and pine trees.

Cook, Elizabeth Ann. "A Determinant of Child Sex Trafficking in Los Angeles County, California". ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3758.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
In Los Angeles County, California, approximately 2,245 victims of child sex trafficking were identified between 1997 and 2012. Several authors believed that poverty was linked to child sex trafficking because it increased the vulnerability of victims. The purpose of this nonexperimental, correlational study was to explore the question of how poverty was related to child sex trafficking in Los Angeles County, California. Intersectionality from the third wave of feminist theory was used as the theoretical underpinning of this study. Using data from the United States Census Bureau and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, information was collected on 97 counties in the southwestern portion of the United States that had a minimum population of 100,000 people and at least 1 arrest of a minor for prostitution between the years of 1997 and 2012. Analysis of the nonnormal data through a Friedman test indicated that differences in the medians existed in the levels of the child sex trafficking variable, but follow up tests did not reveal the sources of the differences. Kendall's W test results indicated a lack of concordance, and Spearman's correlation did not indicate that a monotonic relationship existed between the variables when tested by year, except for 1998. These results failed to provide the evidence needed to reject the null hypothesis. The relationship between poverty and child sex trafficking at the county level could not be measured by income and through a portion of the victim population. Differing measurements of poverty, varying levels of analysis, and diverse applications of intersectionality may yield different results. Ultimately, this study was a first step, rather than a final step, in creating positive social change through increased knowledge and more effective policies against sex trafficking.

Pawinski, Lori. "Small School Reform in a Large Urban High School: Does it Make a Difference in Student Outcomes?" Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2007. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/561.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Since A Nation at Risk (1983), high schools across the United States have searched for answers to address increasing drop out rates and low student achievement. In urban areas, the large comprehensive high school is no longer addressing the diverse needs of the students it serves. The high school reform movement, beginning in 1984, set out to find solutions to solve the problems that these large urban high schools face each day. One reform is the creation of small learning communities within a large secondary school. Small learning communities are groups of teachers sharing and serving small numbers of students centered on a common theme, curriculum, and vision. These small learning communities create personalized learning environments among teachers, students, and parents to mitigate the effects of the large school on student outcomes. The purpose of this research was to investigate one of these small learning communities in a large urban high school in Los Angeles. The study explored how this small learning community set out to implement five identified factors of small schools including: personalization, leadership, authentic curriculum, innovative pedagogy, and accountability. The results show the impact of the small learning community model on student outcomes. Through the examination of quantitative data, the study correlated improved student outcomes with the level of implementation of these five identified factors. Additionally, the study used qualitative date to reinforce the quantitative findings. This research presents a model of an alternative for large urban secondary schools' dilemma in addressing low student academic performance and success.

Streszczenie:
Alcohol consumption and cervical cancer caught in the early stages are preventive epidemics, though the incidence of cervical cancer has continued to rise in Los Angeles, California. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to better understand the association between alcohol consumption and cervical cancer incidence using the theory of relationism. California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) data collected in 2005 was used to investigate alcohol consumption and cervical cancer incidence among women in Los Angeles, California. The CHIS 2005 surveyed 43,020 adults; of those surveyed, 441 participants reported alcohol consumption and cervical cancer out of 25,548 adult women. Chi-square tests of independent and logistic regression were used to determine the strength of association between alcohol consumption and cervical cancer among women in the CHIS dataset. Chi-square results indicate consuming alcoholic drinks 30 days before diagnoses was not a significant predictor of cervical cancer. The logistic regression results suggest the number of alcoholic drinks consume per day was a significant predictor of cervical cancer incidence (p = .000). A major limitation of this study was the small sample sizes. A larger sample size is recommended. Implementing and enforcing awareness program and behaviors modification polices regarding alcohol consumption specifically among women diagnosed with cervical cancer could facilitate the reduction or elimination of alcohol consumption among women alcohol consumer diagnosed with cervical cancer in Los Angeles, California.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Corrosion of concrete sewer crowns will cost the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County approximately $150 million for repairs to their deteriorating sewage system. Other parts of the country are experiencing similar problems. Crown corrosion is induced by microbial oxidation of reduced sulfur to sulfuric acid, which attacks the concrete. Bacteria, of the genus Thiobacillus are generally responsible for catalyzing these reactions. Thiobacillicollected from sewers were used to establish stoichiometry and biochemical aspects of sulfide oxidation. Metals inhibition was studied among the same cultures. Thiobacilli collected from extremely corroded sewers possess a greater tolerance for metals than those from lightly corroded areas. Acidophilic isolates grow at greater rates and oxidize sulfide more efficiently than non-acidophiles. Chemical inhibitor studies indicated that S(-II) oxidation is tightly linked to respiration by T. thiooxidans. It is doubtful that initial steps in bacterially catalyzed S(-II) oxidation are linked to oxidative phosphorylation.

Modarres, S. Ali. "Ethnic community formation: An ecological perspective on Iranians in Los Angeles". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185032.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Ethnicity is a social construct defined not only by socio-cultural variables, but also by the socioeconomic and social structure within which it develops. In this regard, ethnicity is a by-product, and at the same time a contributor to the spatial structure of human communities. The synergistic relationship between ethnicity and socioeconomic variables requires attention to the special environment within which an ethnic community develops, and furthermore, necessitates an awareness of the subgroups of any given ethnic group and their specific spatial and adaptational behavior. Consequently, the superorganic approach taken by most urban/human ecologists and the collective treatment of assimilation studies is questionable. The Iranian community currently residing in the U.S. illustrates that the spatial distribution of post-1965 immigrants and specifically political immigrants is defined by both ethnicity and also socioeconomic factors. The elite characteristics of these groups, including their high educational achievements, occupational status, and self-employment levels, distinguishes them from many of the other ethnic/immigrant groups who migrated in the early part of the century. Additionally, in the case of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, it is demonstrated that Iranians, along with Russians are distinctive based on their high socioeconomic status. The available data indicates the existence of three types of ethnic groups: (a) traditional low socioeconomic groups; (b) elite immigrants with high socioeconomic and educational achievements; and (c) recent immigrants with high educational and medium to high socioeconomic status. Spatially, differences among and within ethnic groups create specific distribution patterns that are explained largely by socioeconomic and ethnicity factors combined. This research illustrates that in studying any ethnic group, two criteria must be considered: (a) socioeconomic and ethnicity factors have a combined effect that differs not only from one group to another, but also varies within each group; and (b) social structure is not an independent variable, and therefore should be identified and analyzed on a case-by-case approach.

This inquiry examined the practice of instructional coaching in a large, low-performing, high-poverty urban high school. The participation of instructional coaches was examined in light of the school's attempt to construct a culture of social justice in a long-marginalized community. This research examined at instructional coaching through the framework of social reproduction theory in order to ascertain specific instructional coaching practices that may substantiate or validate the existence of legitimation, deskilling of teachers, and cultural hegemony, in an urban secondary school. Among key findings were 1) the disconnect between the intended purpose of instructional coaching and the actual interactions between the coach and teachers have the resultant effect of legitimation through the deskilling of teachers; 2) documentary evidence revealed that the curricula promoted by the instructional coaches at the Education Complex results in a cultural hegemony, having the reductionist effect of narrowing the curriculum to only the most basic levels of cognition, and proffering only what is deemed "legitimate" knowledge. Methods included interviews with instructional coaches, examination of documentary evidence, and observations of instructional coaching activities.

Planners expect infrastructure development underway in Baja California to launch a wave of tourism. Managers will need information concerning the natural environment. This study focuses on the floral richness of the islands of Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico. Results include island plant species inventories; a phytogeographic analysis evaluating the effects of island characteristics on plant species richness; a current human impact analysis, on floral richness; an evaluation of threats to floral richness and environmental health, including a non-native plant analysis; and management recommendations for preventing depletion of the native plant species richness on these islands from increased visitation. Floral richness ranges from 2 to 74 species per island. The best predictors of floral richness are the island area and the seabird presence or breeding. I recommend a combination of careful monitoring, dissemination of educational materials, and increased enforcement of current restrictions on island use to minimize human impacts.

Pasha, Abdurrahman. "The Self-Help Cooperative Movement in Los Angeles, 1931-1940". Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/17917.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This case study examines the Self-Help Cooperative Movement (SHCM). Largely ignored by social scientists for the past eighty years, the movement took place during the Great Depression and, while national in scope, it was concentrated in Los Angeles. This movement combined traditional protest tactics with pre-figurative politics; its goal was to provide full employment for all Americans through the proliferation of worker and consumer cooperatives. Despite a very promising start in 1931, the movement collapsed and disintegrated by 1940. This dissertation examines the reasons for the SHCM's early successes and later its failures. The SHCM's early successes were made possible through their alliances with Japanese farmers (who lived on the outskirts of Los Angeles) and people of color in general, Los Angeles businesses and conservative business leaders, and with sympathetic politicians and state agencies. These alliances were, in turn, made possible by the inherent ambiguity of the SHCM's politics, which incorporated both conservative practices (e.g., self-help) and socialist practices (e.g., workplace democracy). This unique mixture, what the Los Angeles Times called "voluntary communism", generated widespread support among hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers and among conservative, socialist, and liberal political actors. In 1933, the SHCM underwent a profound transformation when Upton Sinclair and the End Poverty in California movement assumed leadership of the cooperatives and the California Democratic Party, promising to place state support behind the cooperative movement and in the process both end unemployment and undermine capitalism. The gubernatorial campaign of 1934 became a referendum on the cooperatives. Over the course of the prolonged bitterly fought campaign the cooperatives became associated with communism, and their liberal and conservative allies responded by discontinuing their support. With the loss of this political and financial assistance the SHCM slowly faded away. While the movement failed to achieve its specific goals, its impact on California politics, along with other Utopian Socialist movements in Los Angeles during this period, was immense. By the 1940s both political parties in California were supporting liberal and socialist initiatives (e.g., universal health-care and mass university education).

White croaker (Genyonemus lineatus family: Sciaenidae) are a benthic foraging fish associated with soft sediment and wastewater outfalls in Southern California. While they are used as a sentinel species due to their high organochlorine contaminant loads, little is known of their movements in relation to contaminated habitats. Acoustic telemetry was used to characterize the site fidelity, area use, and dispersal of 97 white croaker on the Palos Verdes Shelf, California. White croaker demonstrated generally low, but highly variable residency and recurrence to the Palos Verdes Shelf and exhibit nomadic movement patterns. Although the entire monitored shelf was visited by white croaker, habitats in proximity to wastewater outfalls and between 25–35 m depth were preferentially used. Approximately half of white croaker migrated into Los Angeles Harbor. These data are vital for understanding organochlorine contaminant exposure for planning future remediation and monitoring.

Given Iran's historical negative stigma attached to entertainment-oriented music making, and the popularity of entertainment and dance-driven Persian pop in contemporary Irangeles, practitioners of traditional Iranian music express frustration and face challenges in promoting their art, what they feel is an authentic form of Iranian culture. The music they make expresses both personal and cultural values: it is a form of creative expression that presents itself as interwoven with their Iranian identity, reflecting personal and cultural ideals of character in Iranian culture. My findings highlight how Iranian immigrant artists avail themselves of the socio-cultural infrastructure of Irangeles to network with like-minded artists and strategically use satellite TV, online technology and social media to find recognition for, teach, and promote diverse genres of traditional Iranian music in this particular diaspora setting.

Streszczenie:
Stormwater runoff is one of the main sources of pollution for urban waterways. Stormwater has traditionally been managed through concrete-based storm drainage systems, but the past twenty years have introduced an alternative in the form of green infrastructure. Green infrastructure for stormwater management involves the use of low impact development (LID), often vegetated facilities to mimic natural hydrologic systems that capture and allow infiltration of rainwater where it falls and from impervious surfaces upstream, before entering the drainage system. Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California have adopted green infrastructure into their stormwater management plans. For this project, bioswales, a form of vegetated LID facility, were tested in each city to determine their pollutant retention capabilities. Results from Portland show that bioswales filter out heavy metals effectively, and results from Los Angeles show that bioswales accumulate heavy metals in the soil over the course of the year (also due to filtering out metals from the stormwater). These results raise the question of whether accumulation can reach dangerous levels or saturate the soil with pollutants so that removal efficiency is diminished, indicating a need for further monitoring. However, the success of bioswales up to this point is encouraging and indicates that this method should continue to be employed.

Streszczenie:

The submarine-fan-dominated, proximal Los Angeles basin contains interstratified hemipelagic strata coeval with the widespread Miocene Monterey Formation that accumulated in other California margin basins. Although more detritalrich and containing greater abundance of plagioclase and muscovite than more distal, outboard basins, a four-part compositional zonation is recognized in the fine-grained facies, similar to the stratigraphic succession of the Santa Barbara coastal area. In ascending stratigraphic order, these include a basal interbedded calcareous-siliceous zone, a phosphatic zone, a calcareous-siliceous zone, and an uppermost siliceous zone. To establish these zonations, 125 samples from five wells in a north-south transect across the western basin from East and West Beverly Hills, Inglewood, and Wilmington oil fields were analyzed for bulk chemical composition by XRF and quantitative mineralogy by XRD and FTIR. The mineralogic composition of the fine-grained detrital fraction makes use of geochemical equations for sedimentary components developed elsewhere unsuitable to the Los Angeles basin.

Streszczenie:

The thesis focuses on the City of Los Angeles’ acquisition of land at Taylor Yard, a 247-acre site located along the Los Angeles River (LAR), and plans to develop new greenspace projects on this previously industrial site. The Taylor Yard case study provides an example of the opportunities and struggles that face communities as they advocate for the creation of more greenspace within dense, urban Los Angeles. Employing a qualitative mixed methods approach based on media analysis, participant observation at meetings, survey questionnaires, and semi- structured interviews, the study analyzes the historical context, contemporary political ecology, and the socioeconomics that have played a role in the reconfiguration of Taylor Yard. The study examines how community-based organizations are changing the ways people perceive and utilize urban nature, encouraging and embracing local community involvement, and working towards achieving greenspace equity as well as perceptions and utilization of urban greenspace. Results demonstrate that environmental restoration and greenspace projects provide a means to educate and empower the community, and an opportunity for them to reshape their environment in ways that can enhance their livelihoods.

This master’s thesis investigates the economic factors that are affecting the financial decision-making of educated, middle to upper class Millennials in Los Angeles, California. This thesis explores how economic factors, preferences, and self-efficacy interact to determine housing pathways. This thesis also asks whether Millennials in Los Angeles will be able to afford homes and how the cultural narrative of the American Dream affects preferences. In order to answer these questions, twenty in person interviews are conducted with residents of Los Angeles in which they are asked about their values and preferences regarding housing, and the economic factors they are currently facing. This thesis finds that participants are struggling to navigate through economic factors such as student loans, a changing labor market, urbanization, high cost of living, stagnating wages, and high housing prices. This thesis finds that participants are experiencing low self-efficacy when it comes to finances, which seems to be a proportional reaction to the current economic climate. This thesis also finds that most participants want to own homes, however, in reality very few will be able to afford to buy homes in Los Angeles and will have to rent indefinitely. Lastly, this thesis finds that participants are rejecting the old American dream and that their preferences and values are different from baby boomers', however the housing market has not yet evolved to meet the demand of those changing preferences.

Twelve electric borehole-image logs from oil wells located in the Long Beach oil field were used to conduct a fracture analysis of principal stress orientations associated with the Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone. The fractures analyzed are located in the Puente, Repetto, Pico, and San Pedro formations. Fractures were grouped based on fracture type, orientation, and formation. In-situ SHmax orientation was interpreted to range between 320? to 40?. Variations form the in-situ stress were observed across every formation and interpreted as paleo-stress. The SHmax orientation begins to change from NW to N-NW in the Pico Formation, which may signal the onset of the dextral movement of the Newport-Inglewood Fault 2.5 million years ago or later. The NE SHmax orientation in the San Pedro Formation may reflect stress trajectory changes as the Newport-Inglewood Fault continues to propagate in the Pleistocene. Additional SHmax orientations indicate a more complex structural evolution of stress trajectories.

Ashoori, Negin. "Forecasting the Effects of Climate, Population, Price, and Conservation Behavior on Water Use in Los Angeles, California". Research Showcase @ CMU, 2015. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/637.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
In 2015 California entered its fourth year of record-breaking drought which led many to question the sustainability of future water supply in the state, especially in Southern California. With over 90% of its water imported from outside the city, Los Angeles has been greatly impacted by this instability. Due to climate change, population growth, groundwater contamination, and competing demands, Los Angeles’ water sources (Los Angeles Aqueduct, Colorado River Aqueduct, California Aqueduct, local groundwater, and reclaimed water) are subject to various stressors, which make projections of water supply and planning for system sustainability challenging. Reductions in availability from each water source will influence the price and availability of residential water and inevitably lead to greater need for conservation, and for the development of new sources of water supply. Understanding the future Los Angeles water system in the context of a growing population and climate change thus merits careful investigation. The overall objective of this work was to evaluate the factors that impact water demand in Los Angeles as well as apply and compare various modeling techniques to forecast water demand. This was accomplished by (1) assessing the sustainability of each of the water sources that supply Los Angeles under present and future conditions using a system characterization and analysis. (2) Analyzing the importance of various factors influencing water demand in Los Angeles using multiple linear regression and artificial neural network models. (3) Projecting water demand in Los Angeles until 2050 under various scenarios of price, precipitation, temperature, conservation and population. (4) Developing an agent based model of Los Angeles iii water demand that provides insight into interactions among consumers and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) water management system. First, the sustainability of each of the water sources that supply Los Angeles under present and future conditions was analyzed using a system characterization and analysis. The results of the study showed that of the five main water sources that supply Los Angeles, a majority will be impacted by climate change, water quality, energy, and cost stressors. While the expansion of water demand management and agricultural water transfers can help address the challenge of increasing demand, the impacts of climate variability and competing demands are likely to limit their potential. Next, multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models were used to evaluate historical (1970-2012) water demand data for Los Angeles to assess the importance of water price, population, conservation methods, temperature, and precipitation on influencing water demand. Results indicated that the multiple linear regression models were comparable to the artificial neural network models in ability to describe historical water demand data. Models developed for and fitted to monthly data were more accurate in estimating water demand compared to models based on yearly data. Temperature, precipitation, conservation, population, and water price were all significant in impacting monthly water use in Los Angeles. Additionally, fitting of the data with the MLR models revealed that price and conservation impacts have significantly counteracted the impact of population growth on water demand. iv After the variables significant in impacting water demand were identified through the modeling of the historical water demand data, MLR modeling with the same variables, water price, population, temperature, precipitation, and conservation, were used to project Los Angeles water demand until 2050. The model used projections of four global climate models with two CO2 emission scenarios, as well as high, medium, and low scenarios of population, water pricing, and conservation to generate an envelope of forecasts of water demand in Los Angeles from 2013 to 2050. Results of the forecasting with the MLR models under the various scenarios indicated that the effects of climate change on water demand (not supply) are projected to be modest. Without the introduction of increased water pricing and conservation methods, water demand in Los Angeles has the potential to nearly double from 130 billion gallons per year in 2013 to 250 billion gallons in 2050. However, more likely scenarios of population growth, conservation implementation, climate change, and pricing structures yielded predicted increases in water demand of approximately 30 percent, to a level of 170 billion gallons per year by 2050. Finally, an agent based model for water demand was developed to understand the interactions between Los Angeles water consumers and management actions by the LADWP. The model was calibrated with historical (1970-2012) data for water demand. In the model, consumers react to changes in water supply variability and adjust their conservation levels. These changes in conservation help reduce the dependability of imported water in Los Angeles. Projections of various water variability scenarios showed that consumers respond to advertisement intensity and shifts in contact rates with other consumers, which allows for more system resiliency. This is evident in the present day drought in Los Angeles in which water demand is being reduced. Results of the agent based model also demonstrated that high variability in water supply can v increase water demand by up to 2.67 times from 2013 to 2050. Validation of the model indicates the agent based model can adequately project water demand in the future under changes in population, climate, and water supply reliability. Water management in Los Angeles needs to be understood as a highly integrated social, engineered infrastructure, economic, and ecological system. Previously, research efforts in Los Angeles have been focused on understanding the hydrological components of the problem without the consideration of social impacts and human behavior. Consideration of the human decision making and adaptive responses involved is important because it affects water resources management and planning. Adaptive agent modeling can provide insights into how consumer-manager-supplier interactions impact overall water system performance and evolution. The projection models proposed in this research offer a means of assessing potential impacts of water conservation initiatives, restrictions on water demand, pricing incentives, and other water system management options. They also provide insight into the relative importance of environmental conditions that affect water supply on water demand. By viewing the Los Angeles water supply system as a complex system, identification of areas in which there are problems as well as possible solutions can be evident. The city of Los Angeles is still growing and dependency on transferred water is inevitable, so understanding the complexity of the system is imperative to develop sustainable solutions to water scarcity and reliability.

Streszczenie:
Since the end of World War II, the shopping center has been diffused as a building type through the western world and has acquired a central role in suburban territories. It is perceived as a "standardized" building and as the product of the process of economic globalization. Most of the time, the shopping center is conceived on the basis of regional considerations, and so it presents difficult connections with the surrounding urban tissues. Even if it contributes in an important manner to the life of suburbia, it is an introverted building that has limited relationships with exterior spaces.
The thesis, through an analysis of the shopping centre in the United States, Canada and France, wants to shed light on the progressive emergence of its form and spatial characteristics in those countries. This comparative study underlines the mechanisms of diffusion of the shopping center paradigm developed up in the United States and the consequences of its transfer in the other contexts. The morphological and longitudinal analysis of shopping centers located in the Los Angeles, Montreal and Paris metropolitan areas aims to evaluate the influence of the local context on the emergence of specificities related to this building type, to the urban tissues containing it, and to their respective evolution over time.

Streszczenie:
Chemical inhibition of acid production by acidophilic thiobacilli was tested using a variety of metals and chelators (alone and in combination) including Hg(II), Ag(I), Co(II), Mo(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), EDTA and NTA. When tested individually, Hg(II) and Ag(I) showed toxic effects at concentrations of 10-5 M and below; Cd(II), Zn(II) and NTA were noninhibitory at millimolar concentrations. Combination experiments showed both synergistic and antagonistic effects on chemical toxicities. Antagonism was apparent in experiments involving Cu(II)-EDTA, Cu(II)-Fe(III) and Cu(II)-Co(II). Synergism was apparent in experiments involving simultaneous addition of Mo(VI), Cu(II), Co(II) and Zn(II). In general, inhibitors either completely blocked or delayed the onset of acid production. In those cases where delayed reactions were observed, acid production began following an acclimation period on the order of days to weeks. Acclimation and metals speciation experiments suggest that adaptation events are due to biologically dependent changes in inhibitor speciation.

Southern California is the largest U.S. metropolitan area geographically, and demonstrates complex spatial relationships between county labor markets. This paper is interested in investigating the employment dependencies between the core city of Los Angeles its respective commuting sheds, such as San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Using time series data that includes labor demand shocks from the Great Recession, this analysis implements a vector autoregressive model to dissect the relationship between urban and suburban employment changes. The work finds a strong lagging-leading relationship between counties that varies by business cycle phase, and provides policy implications from this relationship.

A content analysis was conducted to determine the amount and type of causal explanation included in coverage of the 1992 Los Angeles riots in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and The Christian Science Monitor. The data were analyzed to determine whether causal explanations were primarily societal or individual/situational. The primary purpose was to examine whether the press has altered its reporting techniques since the Kerner Commission report criticized the narrow, descriptive-based reporting of the 1960s riots. Study results indicate riot coverage was predominantly descriptive and similar in content to that detailed by the Kerner Commission. The most frequently cited cause was the triggering event, the Rodney King acquittal verdict.
