Postural control is an important aspect of human locomotion and stance. When inputs to the Central Nervous System (CNS), consisting of the vestibular, somatosensory, and visual senses, degrade or become dysfunctional, the postural control is affected. Biofeedback has been established as a potential intervention method to assist individuals improve postural control, by augmenting or complementing signals to the CNS. This paper presents an approach to help achieve better postural control using vibrotactile biofeedback. Tests to monitor postural control, in eyes open and eyes closed states, on a wobble board were introduced to assess the viability of the designed system in providing accurate real-time biofeedback responses. Postural control was gauged by measuring the angular displacement of perturbations experienced. Perturbations along the anterior and posterior direction are used to determine the level of provided vibrotactile biofeedback. The feedback informs subjects the severity of perturbation and direction of imbalance. Significant improvement (p-value < 0.05) in postural control while on perturbed surface was detected when the designed biofeedback system was used. The wearable system was found to be effective in improving postural control of the subjects and can be expanded for rehabilitation, conditioning, and strengthening applications dealing with human postural control.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) is becoming a widespread tool in rehabilitation, especially for postural stability. However, the impact of using VR in a “moving wall paradigm” (visual perturbation), specifically without and with anticipation of the perturbation, is unknown. Methods: Nineteen healthy subjects performed three trials of static balance testing on a force plate under three different conditions: baseline (no perturbation), unexpected VR perturbation, and expected VR perturbation. The statistical analysis consisted of a 1 × 3 repeated-measures ANOVA to test for differences in the center of pressure (COP) displacement, 95% ellipsoid area, and COP sway velocity. Results: The expected perturbation rendered significantly lower (p < 0.05) COP displacements and 95% ellipsoid area compared to the unexpected condition. A significantly higher (p < 0.05) sway velocity was also observed in the expected condition compared to the unexpected condition. Conclusions: Postural stability was lowered during unexpected visual perturbations compared to both during baseline and during expected visual perturbations, suggesting that conflicting visual feedback induced postural instability due to compensatory postural responses. However, during expected visual perturbations, significantly lowered postural sway displacement and area were achieved by increasing the sway velocity, suggesting the occurrence of postural behavior due to anticipatory postural responses. Finally, the study also concluded that VR could be used to induce different postural responses by providing visual perturbations to the postural control system, which can subsequently be used as an effective and low-cost tool for postural stability training and rehabilitation.

A method developed for categorizing various postures assumed during performance of activities of daily living by older adults is presented. The system is designed so that observers can simply and easily identify a posture and place it into the appropriate category. The method was found to be easily learned with a short training session and highly reliable. Postural categories are identified which are high in frequency, involve gross postural changes during meal preparation sequences and may cause injury to older adults. Suggestions are offered to restructure tasks and environments to reduce the frequencies of these “problem” postures.

The sensory and motor systems work in an integrated way to reestablish balance while performing other motor tasks (e.g., carry a tray with cups, changing a light bulb while balancing on a ladder, etc.), which we identify as “supra-postural.” Moreover, individuals use haptic perception to control tools while performing these tasks that can, at the same time, aid the postural control system. A tool identified as useful to the postural function is the anchor system, which consists in subtle manipulation of flexible cables attached to low mass loads that are kept in contact with the ground. Holding these cables with their hands, individuals, via active exploration, adjust their bodies in space more efficiently than without this tool. The purpose of this study is to analyze in haptic anchorage tasks how does supra-postural components (e.g., intentionally move rhythmically the anchor system up and down; with or without anchor masses touching the ground, and with or without the end loads attached to the anchor system) affect body sway during balancing tasks. Fifteen young adults participated in this study in two sessions of data collection separated in two different days (anchors with loads and free-load anchors). The participants stood on a force platform with their feet in tandem position, blindfolded, for 30 seconds. To the sound of a metronome (55 BPM), they moved anchor system or the nylon strings (e.g., without the attached loads) up and down according to the following conditions: quiet anchoring, in-phase and out-of-phase dynamic anchoring, and mixed anchoring (e.g., one hand quiet anchoring while the other keep a dynamic anchoring). The variables of the center of pressure (COP) included the COP’s path length (PL-COP), ellipse area, RMS of medial-lateral displacement (RMS-ml), mean speed of medial-lateral oscillation (MSS-ml) and the frequency at 80% of the power spectrum (F80-ml). Our results revealed that an unloaded anchorage system does not provide stabilizing effects for the posture system and is not characterized as a supra-postural task, contrary to the anchor system with loads. Also, keeping the loads in suspension during an anchoring task does not stabilize posture as much as when keeping the loads in contact with the ground. Finally, anchoring with steady loads on the ground promotes stabilizing effects of the posture compared to dynamic anchoring with loads moving rhythmically. These results illustrate that sensory information to control posture during haptic anchoring tasks rely on a fixed reference for postural orientation (i.e., anchor loads in contact with a surface).

Postural balance is a concern that applies to both humans and bipedal robots. For Humans, this issue is focused on detecting some pathologies, evaluating individual balance capability, and gather data on how equilibrium is maintained. On the other hand the robot’s postural study aims to evaluate the machine’s control and help tune it. Given the need to test the equilibrium of University of Aveiro Humanoid Project - PHUA, the idea of creating a balance disruption system came up. The idea is that the system disrupts the balance using pull forces that can be applied in every direction of the horizontal plane. As a first approach, the concept is tested on a pendulum assisted by elastics, with the objective of understanding which is the best way to control the system and find possible problems to its control. On an initial phase, a controller is designed to create a state of balance where the pull forces are equal making the pendulum stand still. On a second phase, after achieving the state of balance described previously, the pendulum is briefly pulled in a direction and tensile forces and the pendulum’s angle are measured, with the purpose of analysing the effects of the stimulus. This way, different manners of applying stimuli and different types of stimuli are tested. It was realised that: it is possible to apply repeatable stimuli with this concept; the fact that the system is coupled and non-linear brings obstacles to its control, being necessary to adopt new control strategies. This dissertation will serve as a support for future work, (which is building the system at PHUA scale) offering a set of informations and guidelines.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Good postural stability is needed during most activities in daily life. Balance can be improved with specific training programmes in physiotherapy. The goals of treatment differ, depending on the subject's age and disorders. In clinical practice, postural stability is commonly evaluated by scaled functional tests or by recording body sway on a platform. On the basis of therapeutic modalities, information of separate movements of body segments would be important. The data might be useful in developing balance evaluation and training programmes in physiotherapy. The aim of this project was to present one method and to estimate its reliability and validity in studying the movements of separate body segments in postural control. In addition, the association between age, gender and anthropometric factors and the movements of separate body segments during quiet stance with the eyes open and closed were studied in a group of healthy subjects. A method was developed to measure the body movements during standing with a motion analysis system, and the reliability of body movement measurements was evaluated. The validity of the motion analysis measurements was evaluated to compare the balancing body measurements during stance on two legs and on one leg obtained with a motion analysis system and a platform. In cross-sectional studies, 100 healthy randomly selected subjects were stratified into ten groups (by age and gender). The body movements of all subjects standing on two legs with the eyes open and closed were measured using a motion analysis system and calculated as maximal and total movements. The movement velocities and accelerations were analysed and compared between the eyes open and eyes closed conditions. The associations between movement values and age and gender were analysed. In addition, the body anthropometrics of the subjects were measured and the relations between the body characteristics and the body balancing movements were calculated using regression analysis. The results showed that motion analysis can be used in measuring body movements in postural stability. Better reproducible balance measurement results are obtained with the total movement values than with the maximal amplitude values. In a comparison of the parameters used in a validity study, motion analysis and platform seemed to reflect the same aspect of balance, although the views of measurement were different. During standing on two legs with the eyes open, there was a statistically significant difference in the maximal anterior-posterior head movement and in the vertical navel movement between the age groups, but the results did not show other statistically significant differences between the balancing movements of separate body segments of the groups or between the balance measurement values of men and women in standing on two legs with the eyes open and closed. It seems that healthy female and male subjects control their stance with quite similar ranges of body adjustment. Body characteristics had slight but considerable effects on the variations of body balancing movements in standing on two legs with the eyes open, but almost none in the eyes-closed conditions. There were differences in the results between the male and female groups. In standing on two legs with the eyes closed, all the measured body parts except the ankles had significantly higher maximal velocity and acceleration values than in standing with the eyes open. The effect of visual information on balancing the body seems to be essential. The results indicated that the motion analysis system is also a useful tool in further balance studies, but the methods of analysis need to be developed. Postural stability should be evaluated and practised even in more demanding balance performances. Movement speed and the special role of each body part in maintaining balance should be paid attention.

With aging, individuals exhibit several structural, functional and behavioral changes. As a good postural control performance depends on the integrity of the sensory and motor systems, deterioration of these systems occurring with aging could influence the postural control performance of older adults. However, it is still unclear which sensory and motor functional changes are due to aging per se, neither the relationship between these changes and the changes of the performance of postural control in older adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the performance of the sensory and motor systems and postural control in older adults and to investigate the relationship between changes in these systems and postural control in this population. Twenty older adults (68,9±3,7 years) (GAI) and 20 young adults (21,9±2,1 years) (GAJ) were submitted to sensory, motor and postural control assessments. Sensory assessments were composed of visual (acuity and contrast sensitivity) and somatosensory assessments (tactile sensitivity of and sensitivity to passive motion). Motor assessments consisted of measurements of joint torque and muscular activity latency after displacement of support surface. Postural control assessments consisted of measuring the body oscillation during maintenance of the upright stance (semi-tandem stance), the resolution of a sensory conflict (discrete movement of a moving room) and the coupling between visual information...(Complete abastract, click electronic access below)

Introduction: Body balance disorders, such as dizziness and disequilibrium, are commonly observed. In most cases, these disorders are consequence of proprioceptive dysfunction. To preserve the body balance, the central nervous system depends on afferent information of visual, vestibular and somatosensory systems and promotes the interaction between body and space in association with cognition. Objective: To analyze the changes in body balance before and after the use of a pressure sensoriomotor stimulus over the atlanto-occipital joint with using an instrument named ZEPH´S (PI0900380-0). Method: This is a retrospective study with a sample of 167 patients. From these patients, 70 constituted the experimental group and have undergone intervention with the instrument ZEPH’S, 67 patients composed the control group that had not undergone any treatment. All patients had complaints related to balance disorders and no etiological diagnosis of vestibular and neural imbalance. Comparative statistical analyses among the groups were used to evaluate the treatment outcome. Results: The Cochran's Q test, McNemar's test and Chi-square test evaluated the Romberg, Fukuda and Gagey tests, opened eyes spontaneous nystagmus, closed eyes spontaneous nystagmus and directional nystagmus and observed statistically significant differences before and after 7, 30 e 180 days of the stimuli within the experimental group and between the experimental and control groups. The Mann-Whitney’s test, Wilcoxon’s test and Friedman’s test evaluated the Visual Analogic Scale scores and experienced statistically significant changes among the four moments in the experimental group and between the experimental and control groups. All tests demonstrated a statistically significant difference regarding the success of the experimental treatment. Conclusion: The intervention through the ZEPH’S instrument showed positive results with statistically significant differences when the patient conditions were compared before and after the intervention, and also when compared to the control group.

Streszczenie:
In current scientific literature, there are numerous approaches that clinicians can use to assess the static postural stability of patients. Among them, the Balance Error Scoring System is a notable method with merits such as cost-effectiveness and portability. Traditional measurement of errors made by patients in BESS test experiment relies on the manual inspection of sophisticated clinicians to the whole experiment process. A new avenue of detecting errors with wireless sensor network and signal processing technique can eliminate the instability from subjective evaluation in traditional method. This thesis present a reliable analytical system that can provide accurate evaluation on errors in BESS test of patient with concussion to assist clinicians to investigate their standing postural stability. In this research, the kinetic signal data is collected by wearable WSN equipment consisting of seven sensors embedded with accelerometer and gyroscope fixed on body of patients while they are completing BESS experiment. We use experimental data of 30 subjects to train back-propagation neural network and test the performance of neural network with testing data set. In this procedure, statistical technique such as principal component analysis and independent component analysis are applied in the step of signal pre-processing. Meanwhile, feature extraction is an alternative pre-processing technique for kinetic signal and the feature data serves as input data to train the neural network. With regard to target training data, the standard error information are acquired from the analysis of a group of researchers on video of the conducted experiment and we present them with Gaussian curve signal indicating the possibility of the error event. By testing the neural network, the technique of feature extraction in combination with back-propagation neural network is confirmed to account for the most optimal assessment of the postural error in BESS test. Furthermore, we can confirm the type of each detected error from six possible types of postural errors with neural network classification technique. Each type of error is corresponding to a certain unstable posture according to “BESS Protocol”. Ultimately, the presented error detecting system is convinced to supply reliable evaluation of the static postural stability of patients with concussion problem.

Abstract: With aging, individuals exhibit several structural, functional and behavioral changes.

The thesis examined the effects of static and dynamic visual information on postural control in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results suggest that the visual-motor mechanism adopted by ASD individuals to control posture is different from typically-developed individuals. Evidence of postural control impairments was also identified in ASD individuals. The findings advance the understanding of postural control in ASD and may guide the development of effective postural control interventions for ASD individuals.

Streszczenie:
A worker may experience muscle aches or numbness in legs and fatigue after an eight-hour workday occupying a permanent posture for a long time. Taking into account minimum requirements for postural hygiene and ergonomics, we managed to avoid these discomforts without suffering health problems in the medium and long term. This study is part of a population of fifteen craftsmen who make masapan handicrafts in Calderón town in Ecuador. The process arises from a transformation of bread dough to a handmade dough more than 80 years ago, consisting of an ancestral art that needs quality from obtaining the dough to the artistic details of figures, where the craftsman makes his creations without realizing that is jetting a bad posture in the workplace. The research analyzes the operation of the manufacture of the glue that is carried out standing up, mixing the ingredients to obtain the dough and cooked until it gets a homogeneous consistency. It is a repetitive activity in each of the production cycles. The OWAS and RULA methods were applied to assess the risks produced by physical loads derived from the activities carried out and the global characterization of the postures, which were observed and classified in various possible combinations. The process is at level 3, that is, it requires the redesign of the task and increasing the active pauses. As a result, it was obtained that the risk category is level 2, the analyzed posture has the potential to cause damage to the musculoskeletal system.

It is widely recognized that postural stabilization is multisensory. The normal anterior-posterior (AP) body sway of an individual results in visual cues of postural instability such as changes in apparent stimulus movement, image size and retinal disparity. Changes in pressure on the skin, muscle and joint receptors as well as changes in angular/translational head movements and head position also serve as somatosensory and vestibular cues to postural instability. Although it is known that information about postural stability is available from each of the three sensory modalities, little is known about how they interact.

Streszczenie:
For the several millions of vestibular loss sufferers nationwide, daily-living is severely affected in that common everyday tasks, such as getting out of bed at night, maintaining balance on a moving bus, or walking on an uneven surface, may cause loss of stability leading to falls and injury. Aside from loss of balance, blurred vision and vertigo (perceived spinning sensation) are also extremely debilitating in vestibular impaired individuals. For the investigation of implants and prostheses that are being developed towards implementation in humans, non-human primates are a key component. The purpose of our study was to implement a distinctive balance platform-system to investigate postural responses for moderate to severe vestibular loss and invasive vestibular prosthesis-assisted non-human primates (rhesus monkeys) for test balance conditions of various task-difficulty levels. Although the need for vestibular rehabilitative solutions is apparent, postural responses for a broad range of peripheral vestibular function, and for various stationary and moving support conditions, have not been systematically investigated. The measurement system used in this research was unique in that it allowed us to conduct animal experiments, not investigated previously; such experiments are necessary towards the development on an invasive vestibular prosthesis to be used in humans suffering from vestibular loss. Our platform-system facilitated the study of rhesus monkey posture for stationary support surface conditions (i.e., quiet stance and head turns; more versus fewer footplate cues and large versus small base-of-support) and for dynamic support surface conditions (i.e., pseudorandom roll-tilts of the support surface). Further, the platform-system was used to systematically study postural responses that will serve as baseline measures for future vestibular-focused human and non-human primate posture studies.

Streszczenie:
Awkward postures are associated with a number of musculoskeletal disorders in almost all work sectors. Various studies have indicated the prevalence of awkward postures in different work setups and have provided ways to assess postural deviations and their unfavourable effects on general well being of the workers. The need of the hour is to have an aid that provides a means not only to assess the awkwardness of a posture, but also to correct it as soon as it is identified. The study, here, is designed to develop a solution for assessment and correction of the awkward posture as soon as it is attained. An ergonomic cushion is presented which is fitted with printed flex sensors to detect the awkward postures, considering lumbar curve, thoracic curve and cervical curve. A mobile application is used to configure the sensing range of the sensors. The application collects the data for the flex pressure sensors positioned at different points and warn the user to correct the posture. If not corrected within the stipulated time, the cushion automatically corrects the posture with the help of a microcontroller that expands or deflates the cushion as per postural requirement.

Streszczenie:
Postural control has been defined as “regulating the body’s position in space for the dual purposes of stability and orientation.” How the body achieves postural control depends, in part, on the environment. A person navigating a non-moving surface (e.g. hallway, stairway, or step ladder) will process information and will employ different strategies to maintain postural control than someone who is standing or walking on a moving surface (e.g., forklifts, personal transportation systems, escalators, and moving walkways). In both environments, sensory, cognitive, and motor control systems contribute to postural control. The musculoskeletal system uses muscle activation and joint positioning to control the body’s alignment and muscle tone. The biomechanics of postural control rely on information that the musculoskeletal system receives from sensory systems including the vestibular system, which is generally implicated in behaviors requiring balance control, as well as the somatosensory and visual systems. Furthermore, sensory information from these and other systems can be enhanced by cognitive processes, such as attention. The ability to maintain postural control while standing or walking is critical in preventing falls on both non-moving and moving surfaces. This review focuses on moving surfaces and includes a discussion of the biomechanical, perceptual, and cognitive factors responsible for postural control.

Abstract Poor posture leading to neck and back pain can be caused by long hours sitting in front of computer screens in ergonomically inadequate office furniture or in makeshift home offices. For most individuals, recognizing and correcting for poor posture is an uncommon practice. Poor seated posture is characterized by protracted scapulae, increased kyphosis, and a flexed lumbar spine. Toward a wearable system that performs continuous monitoring, we developed a textile sensor embedded garment. Using textile sensors sewn into a shirt, we test the capability of our design to read curvatures related to seated posture. First, textile sensors were evaluated for fabrication and data collection ease. Next, sensors embedded in shirt designs were evaluated for their ability to produce data that can be recognized as good or poor posture across a user’s back. Designs leveraging e-textiles and snap circuitry enable textile sensor posture readings in a wearable device that is soft and durable. Results from this proof-of-concept prototype show that such customizable garments may enable the study of specific muscle groups related to various postures in the future. Sensor technology embedded in everyday wear garments holds promise for integrating continuous postural monitoring to commercially available clothing.

Streszczenie:
Over the past few years, China has displayed a wide range of advances in military capabilities and infrastructure, including its test of a hypersonic glide vehicle coupled with a fractional orbital bombardment system and evidence of new intercontinental ballistic missile silos. While China and the United States remain at political odds, there are indications that China’s strategies in space, cyberspace and nuclear domains are increasingly converging with those of the USA, as well as Russia. A key question is whether this strategic convergence is a stabilizing or destabilizing phenomenon. To answer the question, this paper explores the current state of Chinese discussions on multidomain deterrence and strategic stability, with a focus on active defence and proactive defence. It then examines how these concepts are manifesting themselves in China’s postural and technological indicators, including pre-mating of nuclear warheads to delivery platforms, expanded nuclear arsenal size, possible shifts towards launch on warning, integration of dual-capable systems, and advances in machine learning and autonomy. It concludes with a discussion of what these trends mean for future strategic stability talks.

Review question / Objective: Is acupuncture a safe and effective therapy for constipation associated with Parkinson’s disease? Our aim is to assess the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for constipation associated with PD and give guidance to future research direction. Condition being studied: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent degenerative disease of nervous system characterized mainly by static tremor, bradykinesia, myotonia, postural gait disorders and other non-motor symptoms. According to variations on race, ethnicity, age and sex, the incidence of PD ranges from 8 to 20.5 per 100, 000 individuals annually. One global research shows that there were 6.1 million individuals suffer from PD in 2016 and will be 12 million patients around the world. According to several outcomes of case-control studies, the prevalence of constipation in PD varies from 28% to 61%. Constipation, as a common gastrointestinal disease which refers to the clinical presentation of reduced spontaneous complete bowel movement, dyschezia, feeling of incomplete defecation and outlet obstruction, is demonstrated to antedate the motor symptom and it's severity is related to the progression of PD. Acupuncture has been proved to act on the pathogenesis of constipation associated with PD. The proposed systematic review we're about to present is the first advanced evidence-based medical evidence in this area.

The state of musculoskeletal system incidence of pupils of secondary schools remains a pressing problem in all regions of Ukraine, in spite of significant achievements in this direction. The determination of the readiness of teachers and senior students of pedagogical college for implementation of health-keeping technologies, which are aimed at creating a physiological posture of schoolchildren, to the educational process was conducted by our questioning method. 95% of teachers and 77.6% of students (according to polls) need methodological assistance for effective use of health-keeping technologies. We consider the main task of high school to be an optimization of the informational flow regarding health-keeping during the educational process and adaptation of the ways of presenting information to the perception of modern youth. The self-education has a great value for getting mastery, so it is necessary that a student or a teacher could have a wide access to both literature and electronic media. The Internet conferences, Internet sites, electronic textbooks, computer programs will be useful.

Streszczenie:
Learning is not always the goal of schooling. As policymakers around the world tackle the ongoing global “learning crisis,” it is important to understand the logics behind the design of education systems. Using a political settlements approach, this article documents the evolution of education policy and associated outcomes in Tanzania in tandem with shifts in elite perceptions of the goals of schooling. Tanzania has experienced four phases of political settlements, each of which encapsulated a different policy posture regarding the goal of schooling. The article also shows that electoral incentives are decidedly biased in favor of increasing access to schooling, even at the expense of quality. These findings advance our understanding of the politics of education policy and the persistent failures to invest in improving learning outcomes in many countries around the world.

Streszczenie:
A complete set rotation-lifting construction technology for free-form surface roof structures with large elevation difference is in this paper. Six principles for this construction technology are proposed. Based on optimization theory, a digital analysis method is developed for calculating the exact solution of lying posture and rotation axis. Theoretical algorithm of multi-lifting point synchronous lifting control technology with different lifting speed and the same lifting ratio is proposed, and a control program is developed. Structural configuration of key construction stage is inspected and monitored by applying the digital system. The system compares computational analysis results with the real-time structure configuration, and the result is provided for construction control. The construction technology has been successfully applied in the Hangzhou West Railway Station project, which has good economic and social benefits.
