Streszczenie:
The postdivorce adjustment of 149 men and 149 women with joint or sole physical custody of their children was examined along two dimensions: parents' individual adjustment and their relationships with ex-spouses. A multivariate multiple regression analysis was employed to assess the relative impact of custody arrangements in the context of men's and women's pre- and postseparation psychological, social, and occupational functioning. Shared custody arrangements (whether joint or sole physical custody), and access of parents to their children had no significant relationship to parents' postdivorce adjustment or relationships with their ex-spouses. However, there was strong evidence for a marked continuity in parents' functioning before and after divorce; that is, prior levels of individual functioning were indicators of postdivorce adjustments and relationship to the ex-spouse. Also, it was estimated that the quality of relationship with a new partner had different effects on men's and women's postdivorce adjustment.

Streszczenie:
The divorce rate among Blacks in the United States has increased significantly in recent years. Consequently, an increasing number of Black men confront problems associated with adjusting to divorce. Using data from in-depth interviews, we identify factors that working-class/middle-class Black men perceive to cause significant stress following divorce and we examine strategies that they use to reestablish their lives. The results show that Black men confront the following divorce-related stressors: (a) financial strain, (b) noncustodial parenting, (c) child-support stressors, and (d) psychological as well as physiological distress. The findings suggest that divorced Black men experience profound postdivorce psychological distress. The data further indicate that Black men employ the following strategies to cope with the stress of marital dissolution: (a) reliance on family and friends, (b) involvement in church-related activities, (c) participation in social activities, and (d) establishment of intimate heterosexual relationships 1 year after divorce. These findings indicate that postdivorce adjustment should be scrutinized within relevant social-cultural contexts.

Streszczenie:
The goal of the current study is to examine the consequences of postdivorce dating breakup for young adult divorced mothers, ages 21–29. First, we hypothesized that breakup would be negatively related to maternal well-being. Second, we predicted that relationship quality would moderate this relationship. Third, we hypothesized that forming and maintaining new subsequent relationships after breakup would promote maternal well-being. Using monthly surveys completed by young adult divorced mothers over a 2-year period after divorce ( N = 51), we used hierarchical linear modeling techniques to test the changes in intercept and slope of breakup for maternal well-being. The event of breakup did not predict the changes in maternal well-being, whereas remaining single after breakup was negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Relationship quality and forming subsequent romantic relationships after breakup did not predict the changes in maternal well-being. Implications for maternal adjustment are discussed.

Streszczenie:
This study examined the association between postdivorce coparenting patterns and adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior. Children after parental divorce increasingly grow up in shared residence arrangements, making postdivorce coparenting much more pertinent. The Coparenting Behavior Questionnaire was used to investigate the perceptions of 251 Dutch adolescents regarding postdivorce coparenting behaviors. Latent class analysis was used to identify coparenting patterns, and associations with adolescent outcomes were examined. Four distinct postdivorce coparenting patterns were identified: cooperative, negatively engaged, negatively disengaged, and average. Adolescents of parents with a cooperative pattern reported the least amount of internalizing and externalizing problems, whereas adolescents with negatively engaged parents reported the most internalizing problems. In line with family systems theory, interactions in the coparental subsystem are associated with adolescent adjustment and can therefore be viewed as both a risk and protective factor.
