Streszczenie:

Critical studies about the Macanese and their literature in the former Portuguese colony of Macau have been scant. Novelists like Austin Coates (City of Broken Promises, 1967) from Great Britain and Henrique de Senna Fernandes (A trança feiticeira, 1993) from Macau, as well as short story writers Deolinda da Conceição (Macau) and Maria Ondina Braga (Portugal), depict life in colonial Macau. While the plots of these works display similarities, Coates’s and Braga’s perspectives are filtered through the lenses of European colonialism and Fernandes and da Conceição work through the legacy of coloniality.

In the early stages of the China trade European traders knew nothing of Chinese, while the Chinese traders were equally ignorant of European languages. It was in this setting that pidgin languages developed for interethnic communication. While the role of Chinese Pidgin English in the China trade is fairly well-understood (see Baker 1987; Baker & Mühlhäusler 1990; Bolton 2003; Ansaldo 2009), the use of pidgin Portuguese is poorly documented and our understanding of it is correspondingly limited (Tryon, Mühlhäusler & Baker 1996). In this article we discuss what can be learnt from a newly transcribed phrasebook — the Compendium of Assorted Phrases in Macau Pidgin. We first review the use of contact varieties of Portuguese in the China trade. We then introduce the contents and layout of the Compendium and explain the transcription practices adopted for the phrasebook. Grammatical features contained in the phrasebook are examined and illustrated. We conclude with an examination of the significance of the Compendium in enriching our understanding of pidgin Portuguese and its relationship with Macau Creole Portuguese as well as Chinese Pidgin English.

As the Portuguese settlement of Macau came to occupy an important position in the emerging global commercial web, it became a crossroads where peoples from disparate parts of the world—in particular, Portuguese and Chinese—came together to engage in a profitable trade. Historians have often treated Macau as a prototypical example of cross-cultural interaction and hybridity: a point where East and West converged and blended; an “Intercultural City,” in the words of one scholar. Yet, the notion of Macau as a place of intermingling and blending obscures some of the ways in which Macau's inhabitants did not quite “come together.” Here, I focus on the asymmetry in linguistic communication that developed in Macau: members of Macau's Portuguese mercantile elite did not become fluent in any of the Chinese dialects, and did not learn how to read or write the Chinese script, while a number of the Chinese who came to live in Macau—whether as merchants, tradesmen, labourers, servants, or slaves—became proficient in Portuguese. Drawing from a range of sources in Portuguese and Chinese, I argue that this asymmetry developed for several reasons, including the difficulty of the Chinese language, the Chinese government's approach to foreign relations and maritime, and the political and economic power of the Portuguese within their Lusophone enclave. I also consider how the Portuguese reliance on others for assistance with cross-cultural communication—most notably, Jesuit missionaries and Chinese jurubaças (interpreters)—shaped the evolution of the multicultural community.

Abstract This article examines Portuguese colonial and military activities at Macau during the Boxer Uprising of 1900, connecting developments across the border in Guangdong with initiatives undertaken by the colonial authorities in Macau. The Portuguese perceived the situation to be serious enough that substantial reinforcements were eventually sent from the metropole, in addition to various other measures taken to strengthen the colony’s defenses. Portugal also used Macau as a base to coordinate the operations of its consulates in China, and exploited the Boxer debacle to press for new concessions and other advantages at China’s expense. At the end, it is hoped that the limited and relatively unknown role played by Portugal, in conjunction with the larger kaleidoscope of events around Macau, may be better illuminated.

After the transfer of the Portuguese administration to China, Macau kept its role as a bridge between East and West, inspired in the Portuguese settlement 500 years ago. The pragmatism of the Chinese central government, using the Lusophone specificities of this Special Administrative Region, supported the creation of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, reviving the statute of the Portuguese language and culture in its own territory.

On 13 April 1987, the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of Portugal signed a Joint Declaration on the question of Macau, agreeing that the PRC would resume the exercise of sovereignty over the territory from 20 December 1999. In the Joint Declaration, the PRC promised that the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) would enjoy a high degree of autonomy, except in foreign and defence affairs which are the responsibilities of Beijing, as was to be the case for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Joint Declaration further stipulated that the government and the legislature of the Macau SAR will be composed of local inhabitants and will be vested with legislative and independent judicial power. This marked the beginning of the transition period for Macau to move from Portuguese to Chinese administration.

Abstract This article rethinks a Luso-Asian community that existing literature has termed ‘Portuguese’ or ‘Macanese’ by exploring the differences between the Macanese communities of Macau, Hong Kong and Shanghai. It examines inter-port debates between 1926 and 1929 that triggered wide discussion in Portuguese and English-language newspapers regarding the political loyalty of the Macanese. Set against the framework of a burgeoning print capitalism and vibrant associational culture in Asia’s port-cities, the article argues that varying urban circumstances and political structures influenced the negotiation of the Macanese between imperial, civic and colonial identities to eventually construct three new imagined communities.

Macau is a 400-year-old Portuguese colony in the Pearl River Delta in southeastern China. Portugal returned the colony to China on 20 December 1999. In light of its history, Macau is an interesting case study of how colonial policies affect adoption of new technologies such as the Internet. Companhia de Telcomunicações de Macau is the only company licensed to provide telecommunications services in Macau. This study examines: (1) the relationship between the Macau government and CTM as an ISP; (2) the relationship between CTM and other Internet companies in Macau; and (3) the relationship between Internet companies and users in Macau.

The Macau Special Administrative Region has experienced a large number of changes before and after the Transfer of Sovereignty over Macau from the Portuguese Republic to the People’s Republic of China during the late 1999s. One of the most significant changes within the government environment should be the reform of civil servant appraisal system. Currently, the civil servants in Macau are using the new civil servant appraisal system framework under the Law Number 31/2004 “Regime geral de avaliação do desempenho dos trabalhadores da Administração Pública”. As the new appraisal system attracts a large number of attentions for research, a satisfied number of literature reviews are stored in the current research bank. However, the literature reviews and research studies about the former civil servant appraisal system framework under the Law Number 87/89/M “Estatuto dos Trabalhadores da Administração Pública de Macau” were mostly written in either Chinese language or Portuguese language. Only very few English written research studies concern the former civil servant appraisal system under the Law Number 87/89/M “Estatuto dos Trabalhadores da Administração Pública de Macau”. Therefore, this paper provides the opportunities for international and English readers to understand the administrative law reform within the Macau environment.

The hypothesis put forward in this thesis is that tourism can be the agent for the sustainable conservation and development of the valuable legacy of colonial built heritage by capitalizing on its tangible and intangible assets. The key variable is the recognition of the intrinsic value of both iconic and non-iconic properties and sites that constitute the extrinsic value of the cultural attractions of the tourism destination. The research problem is concerned with assessing the impact of contemporary tourism development on these attractions and identifying the issues affecting preservation and realization of asset potential. The research aims to support the collaboration between tourism professionals and cultural heritage stakeholders committed to resolving issues and problems for the destination identified within the stages of the tourism destination's life cycle of evolution (Butler, 1980).

This chapter focuses on Macau perspectives on the Hague Principles. It clarifies a few points before examining the contractual choice of law rules in Macau in detail. First, the Macau Civil Code that is the most important source for conflict of laws rules was derived from the 1966 Portuguese Civil Code. Second, due to the fact that Macau is a jurisdiction belonging to the civil law family, court decisions in Macau, theoretically, are not a source of law and do not formally have binding legal effects. Third, while legal doctrine developed by scholars in Macau is not a formal source of law, it may have influence on legislation and provide guidance for court decisions. Fourth, although some revision has been made for the Macau Civil Code since its entry into force in 1999, so far there has not been any initiative to revise its conflicts system, let alone its contractual conflicts rules. Unfortunately, the Hague Principles as a whole or any part therein cannot be incorporated into Macau’s legislation in the near future. Nevertheless, theoretically speaking, broadly accepted international customs and usages could be resorted to as ‘persuasive authority’ by Macau judges in judicial practice. The chapter then provides a comparison between the Hague Principles and Macau law.

Abstract: This paper investigates the path of third generation Portuguese modern architect, Mário Bonito (1921/1976), in order to understand and clarify his contribution to the maturity process of portuguese modern architecture, that began at the end of the 1940s, strongly influenced by Le Corbusier. Through the understanding of his final academic work, CODA (Competition to Obtain the Architects Diploma), designated Pavilhão das Ilhas Adjacentes, located in Jardim do Palacio Cristal (Crystal Palace Gardens) in Porto, dated 1947/48, we intend to deepen his relationship with the modern premises of corbusier´s architecture, framed by portuguese reality. However Le Corbusier´s legacy in Mario Bonito´s work is not formal but thematic, in understanding the main issues that guide the intent of progressive man in molding a modern and just society. The paper covers themes characteristic to Portuguese modernist architecture such as the dialogue between craftsmanship and technique, compositional rigor and rational design issues resulting from the systematization of the construction processes, with the search for standardization of architectural and constructional elements. This dialogue emphasizes the compromise between tradition and modernity that will be present in all of Mário Bonito´s designed and written work, announcing the experimental temperament and formal coherence of his subsequent works. Resumen: Este artículo investiga el camino de la tercera generación de arquitecto moderno portugués, Mário Bonito (1921/1976), a fin de comprender y aclarar su contribución al proceso de la madurez de la arquitectura moderna portuguesa, que se inició a finales de la década de 1940, fuertemente influenciado por Le Corbusier. A través de la comprensión de su obra académica final, CODA (Concurso para Obtenção do Diploma de Arquitecto), designado Pavilhão das Ilhas Adjacentes, ubicado en Jardim do Palacio de Cristal en Porto, con fecha de 1947 / 48, tenemos la intención de profundizar su relación con las premisas modernas de la arquitectura Corbusiana, encuadradas por la realidad portuguesa. Sin embargo el legado de Le Corbusier en el trabajo de Mario Bonito no es formal, sino temático, en la comprensión de los temas principales que guían la intención del hombre progresista en el moldeo de una sociedad moderna y justa. El artículo abarca temas como el diálogo entre la artesanía y la técnica, el rigor compositivo y problemas de diseño que resulten de la sistematización de los procesos de construcción, con la búsqueda de la normalización de los elementos arquitectónicos y constructivos. Este diálogo enfatiza el compromiso entre la tradición y la modernidad que estará presente en todo trabajo diseñado y escrito de Mario Bonito, anunciando el temperamento experimental y coherencia formal de sus obras posteriores. Abstract: Le Corbusier’s work and thought are a predominant influence over the Modern Movement, and their worldwide spreading acquired a significant dimension during the Second Post-War period. Such predominance of the architectural models conveyed by Le Corbusier may have originated in the rationale enunciated in his written work, which clearly explains a set of doctrinaire parameters, or in his active determinant role in international organisations such as the CIAM, but particularly in his ability to become a global architect, which led to a large international publication of his work. This paper intends to analyse the significance of the Corbusian legacy in architectural production in Angola and Mozambique during the 1950s and 1960s. These two former Portuguese colonies, far away from the centre of power dominated by the dictatorship of the so-called Estado Novo, were tantamount to a land of freedom and were, for a significant range of young architects working and building there, a laboratory for testing new languages of the Modern Movement, particularly on the basis of the Corbusian vocabulary. Two of those young architects Vasco Vieira da Costa (1911- 1982) and Fernão Simões de Carvalho (1929-), who worked in Angola from the beginning of the 50s, were trainees in Le Corbusier’s Paris ateliers. In addition to the work developed by those two architects, the specificity of the architectural production in Angola and Mozambique, particularly private order work, is clearly referenced to the Corbusian lexicon, whether in a more orthodox or a more hybrid way. ose Manuel Pedreirinho was born and educated in Lisbon, and has operated his own practice there since 1984. In addition to teaching the history of modern architecture and the theory of architecture at the universities of Lisbon, Coimbra, and Porto, Prof: Pedreirinho is also completing a PhD at the University of Bath (UK). The author of several articles and two books on Portuguese architecture and the teaching process, Prof: Pedreirinho is currently preparing a guide on the architecture of Porto. Michel Toussaint is an architect and educator in Lisbon, where he teaches the theory of architecture at the Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa and the Universidade Lusiada. Prof: Toussaint has published several essays, articles, and books on architectural topics, and has practiced in Portugal, Angola, and Macau. Pancho Guedes is an architect currently working in Lisbon ajler an extensive career in Mozambique and South Africa. A graduate of the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), Prof: Guedes’ work is noted for it sculptural and expressionistic quality, influenced heavily by African art and the work of Gaudi. In addition to his academic career in Lisbon, Prof: Guedes has also taught at the Architectural Association in London. Abstract: The program of the summer house will mark the acceptance period of modern architecture in Portugal. The modern life is put into practice by a group of architects to an enlightened bourgeoisie clientele, in some summer resorts that will start to be developed in the Portuguese coastline. The Existenzminimum, will be a German expression used throughout the twentieth century, particularly after the First World War, where the concerns of social nature and housing, for a large number of people will be important issues to be discussed by architects. Petit cabanon was Le Corbusier’s summer house in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. This small pavilion experienced new possibilities of living in minimum area, similar to the theories of the existenzminimum studied by Modern architects in the post-first world war period. New ways to dwell in minimum space are then reinterpreted in the early experiences of holiday houses in Portugal where a simple way of living started to be tested. Resumen: El programa de la casa de verano se cumplirá el plazo de aceptación de la arquitectura moderna en Portugal. La vida moderna se pone en práctica por un grupo de arquitectos a una clientela de burguesía, en algunos centros turísticos de verano que comenzarán a desarrollar en la costa portuguesa. El Existenzminimum, será una expresión alemana utilizado a lo largo del siglo XX, sobre todo después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, donde las preocupaciones de carácter social y vivienda, para un gran número de personas serán temas importantes a tratar por los arquitectos. Petit Cabanon fue la casa de verano de Le Corbusier en Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Este pequeño pabellón experimentó nuevas posibilidades de vivir en área mínima, similar a las teorías de la Existenzminimum estudiados por arquitectos modernos en el periodo posterior a la primera guerra mundial. Nuevas formas de habitar el espacio mínimo son entonces reinterpretadas en las primeras experiencias de casas de vacaciones en Portugal, donde una forma moderna de habitar comenzó a ser testada. Abstract: The aim of this investigation is to present an approach to the notion of a global architect, the universality of his theory and legacy. The investigation is composed in two main stages whose goals are the following: 1) to address the notion of global architect; 2) to demonstrate the role of Le Corbusier to perform the idea of global architect and his influence in others architects, such as Fernando Távora (1923-2005), a portuguese architect recognized as the master of Álvaro Siza. The first stage, we seek to formulate a definition of global architect from the point of view of Le Corbusier’s works. During the second stage we analyse and compare the positions of Le Corbusier and Távora and their projects: Ronchamp, Chandigarh and Market at Vila da Feira and Ofir Summer House. Thus, we attempt to analyse the role of Le Corbusier as a global architect and his impact on others colleagues, such as Távora who seeks to achieve the same ideal of global architect and perform a universal vision of architecture. Resumen: El propósito de esta investigación consiste en presentar una aproximación a la idea de arquitecto global, la universalidad de su teoría y su legado. El artículo se compone en dos partes principales cuyos objetivos son los siguientes: 1) hacer una reflexión acerca de el concepto de arquitecto global; 2) aclarar el papel de Le Corbusier como un personaje que personificó el ideal de arquitecto global y mostrar como ha influenciado a muchos arquitectos, como es el ejemplo de Fernando Távora (1923-2005), un arquitecto portugués reconocido como el maestro de Álvaro Siza. En primer lugar, se procura formular una definición de arquitecto global desde el punto de vista de Le Corbusier y sus obras. Durante la segunda parte se analizan y comparan las posiciones de Le Corbusier y Fernando Távora así como sus proyectos: Ronchamp, Chandigarh, Mercado de Vila da Feira y la Casa de Verano en Ofir. Por fin, se trata de analizar la importancia y el papel de Le Corbusier como un arquitecto global y su impacto sobre otros colegas, como es el caso de Fernando Távora que intentaba lograr el mismo ideal de arquitecto global e incorporar una visión universal de la arquitectura.
