This article argues that the basic tenets of astrology were not restricted to astrologers but were known to, and understood by, most people. It presents two thirteenth-century Portuguese songs of mockery describing the misfortunes of a self-proclaimed astrologer and the unpleasant, but hilarious, consequences of his poor understanding of astrology. These songs were also very popular in the thirteenth century among all social groups, from the common people to the royal court. For these jokes to be understood, the public had to recognize at least a few technical terms, otherwise the joke would simply not have worked.

This paper focuses on an apparent paradox. In the early decades of the eighteenth century, Jesuit professors of mathematics at the College of Santo Antão in Lisbon delivered entire courses of astrology while astrological almanacs testified to the fact that astrology had ceased to appeal to large sectors of Portuguese society. This case thus challenges the traditional perception that early modern scholars increasingly dissociated themselves from astrology whereas it still continued to play a major role in common people’s lives and beliefs. Furthermore, this also contradicts the view according to which the Counter-Reformation played a crucial role in the marginalization of astrology. This paper argues that Portuguese Jesuits followed a flexible interpretation of Thomas Aquinas regarding the extent of celestial influence and perceived astrology as compatible with Aristotelianism. It understands the downfall of astrology within the context of political centralization that characterized the reign of Pedro II.

Abstract Based on manuscripts from the Mexican National Archive recording a 1650 Inquisition trial for astrology, this article will present a reconstruction of the story of Gaspar Riveros Vasconcelos, a “mulatto” born in Tangier, a descendant of a Portuguese father and Angolan mother. He travelled the Atlantic commercial routes – visiting Angola, Pernambuco, Cartagena de Indias, La Havana – and got involved in political discussions with Spaniards residing in mid-seventeenth century Mexico City. This period was particularly tough for Portuguese people in Spanish America, given the 1640 breach of the dynastic union of Spain and Portugal, which had been formerly achieved in 1581 by King Philipp ii. Vasconcelos’ story allows us to reflect on identity formation in time, on the concept of race, as well as on the ways in which “a persona miserable de color pardo” could deploy his agency as Afro-Portuguese in colonial Mexico society. As such, this paper aims to reconsider the relevance of individual narratives which can generate a growing awareness of the importance that Afro-descendants had in the Ibero-American world and how they could influence the process of racialization in the local context of seventeenth century New Spain.

The Jews of Spain in the Middle Ages played an important role in the transmission of Graeco-Arabic learning by translating, or participating in translations, of scientific texts. They also composed original works on mathematics, astronomy, astrology and medicine in which they adapted the theories of the ancients for their own time. Science was used by the ruling powers as an element of prestige, and by the Jewish scientists as a way to obtain a high social status. The policy of cultural sponsorship of Muslim caliphs, as well as of Christian kings, was fundamental in the process of transmission of the Greek sciences to the Western world. The School of Translators of Toledo is an example of this process. The astronomical theories developed by Jewish scientists at the end of the 15th century played an important role in the Spanish and Portuguese discoveries of the 16th century. Their knowledge of astronomy, astrology, mathematics, and medicine was also used by the Jewish intellectuals to provide a rational and scientific support for the Jewish religion and tradition, as is reflected in the interpretations of the Bible by medieval Spanish Jewish authors.

Scholars and biographers of Galileo have felt at liberty over the centuries to ignore his apparently keen endorsement of a polemical and astrological prophetic text, which he published in Rome in 1626. Omitted from the collected works of Galileo, it was finally brought to light by Luigi Guerrini in 2001. The text concerned a Portuguese prophecy for the restoration of its empire. Such delayed recognition may serve to remind us of the sheer extent to which Galileo’s involvement in astrology has been censored, marginalised and written out of the history books. The prophecy was viewed as inflammatory by the Spanish authorities, and orders went forth for all copies to be destroyed. One single copy remains of this publication with Galileo’s foreword, in the Biblioteca Nazionale Central in Florence, where it was found by M. Guerrini. The author’s name seems to have varied over the years from Manuel Bocarro Francês y Rosales to Dr Jacob Rosales to Imanuel Bocarro Francês. It is unclear whether Galileo and Rosales ever met; it is possible that Galileo wrote this Foreword at the request of the Medicis who employed him

The presence of Jewish astrologers in the Portuguese court of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries is frequently mentioned in the chronicles of the kings. In 1496, King Manuel I forced the Jews to choose between conversion to Catholicism and expulsion. Those noblemen had to leave the court, and many of them also left the kingdom. In 1529, King João III created the position of Royal Cosmographer, the mathematician Pedro Nunes being the first to occupy the position. Pedro Nunes was apparently a severe opponent of astrology except for one episode: a few days before the coronation of King Sebastião in 1568, Pedro Nunes allegedly suggested to the Queen-regent, that she should postpone the ceremony, claiming astrological reasons. Historians relate this episode to a similar one, more than a century earlier, featuring the coronation of King Duarte (Edward) in 1433, and some believe that the alleged incident with King Sebastião may be just one more legend about this charismatic king. In this text we discuss the possibility that Pedro Nunes had actually made and examined the astrological chart for the moment of the coronation of King Sebastião.

This paper analyses the involvement of the astrologer Manuel Galhano Lourosa in the restoration of political independence of Portugal from Spain between 1640 and 1668. Lourosa was the most successful astrologer and almanac maker in seventeenth-century Portugal. He published astrological almanacs for several decades, wrote an astrological and astronomical treatise on comets, and addressed astrological writings to Portuguese society urging support for the new political order that issued from the revolution of 1640. Some of these writings were consistent with the feelings of the urban professional and mercantile classes. We argue that, by publishing and using his social prestige in favour of the Restoration cause, Lourosa used the sphere of public opinion to act politically along with the interests of the urban middle class.

In 1555, Leonhard Thurneysser zum Thurn (1531–1596), a young apothecary, alchemist, astrologer and healer from Basle in Switzerland, travelled to Portugal and stayed in Lisbon with Damião de Góis (1502–1574), the Portuguese humanist and diplomat. The principal purpose of Thurneysser’s visit was the study of natural history and the observations and information that he collected then and during a second trip about 1562. These observations were recorded in a manuscript that remained unnoticed until the twenty first century. Thurneysser’s manuscript, now held in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, contains descriptions of animals, plants and of two economically important dyestuffs, kermes and dragon’s blood, the first obtained from the scale insect, Kermes vermilio (associated with Quercus coccifera, kermes oak), and the second from Dracaena draco (dragon tree). Thurneysser’s contributions to knowledge of these two products and their associated plants were innovative and reveal an observer endowed with exceptional insight. His main sources of information, in addition to his personal fieldwork, observation of goods sold in Lisbon markets and conversations with vendors and merchants, were the classics of Antiquity and contemporary works including two of Damião de Góis’s works, Hispania (1542) and Urbis Olisiponis descriptio (1554).

Dissertação apresentada para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em História Medieval
The present study addresses the practice of astrology and its cultural repercussions in the 14th and 15th centuries’ Portuguese court. The research is based in the comparative study of three sets of sources: 1) the astrology books from the royal libraries, which reveal the dominant concepts of astrology; 2) the writings of kings João I and Duarte, and prince Pedro, as examples of the practical application of these concepts; 3) the royal chronicles of Fernão Lopes, Gomes Eanes de Zurara and Rui de Pina, as examples of its presence in political discourse. The astrological references occur in three main contexts: the validation of power, the explanation of manners and the debate about determinism-versus-free will. The latter stands as the main fracturing topic in medieval astrology. In any case, the validity of astrology by itself was never in question; the debate revolved only around its limits and its legitimacy in face of Christian faith. Astrology was seen as a sophisticated art, practiced by learned men. Its foundation was the scientific understanding of the natural laws and its practitioners tried to demarcate themselves from common divination and superstition. Due to its pervasiveness in this period, it can be concluded that astrology is an essential factor for the understanding of Portuguese medieval life. The study of the astrological practice, from the perspective of the History of Culture and Mentalities, offers new insights to the understanding of the medieval period.

Abstract: In this dissertation we present our translation from latin into portuguese of a manuscript entitled Ouranomachia or Ludus Astrologorum, which contains the rules of a board game with astronomical and astrological content. The version of this game created by William Fulke, in London of the 16th Century, is based in Ptolemy's classical cosmology. Our paper contains a brief historical panorama of these subjects throughout the centuries, emphasizing mainly both great Ptolemy's works, the Almagest and the Tetrabiblos, which are the cornerstones of the game. We tried to show with the study which precedes our translation how the content revisit is done, which was utilized by Fulke to compose the rules and structure of this game
