Polypropylene fibrous concrete is a new kind of composite material. Polypropylene fiber leads to an increase in the resisting strength, cracking resistance performance, resistance to impact performance and permeability reducing performance of the concrete, thus reduces the shrinking and deformation of the concrete. This paper uses the method of numerical analysis, assisted by the software of finite element analysis, makes both static and dynamic analysis on the polypropylene fibrous concrete ditch with different volume mixing. It results in the stress and strain table of the head and base plates of the polypropylene fibrous concrete ditch in the case of 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% volume mixing of polypropylene fibers. The paper provides technological basis for formation design of the polypropylene fibrous concrete materials, and laids technological foundation for the further developments of polypropylene fibrous concrete in hydraulic engineering.

The paper presents the results of the development of the technology of centrifugal-die forming of biologically active fibrous materials. The modification of biologically active polypropylene fibers was carried out directly at the process of their production in the field of centrifugal forces of rotating reactor during their molding from polypropylene melt. The properties of the obtained ion-exchange and biologically active polymer fibers are studied. It is shown that obtained and modified by the centrifugal-die method polypropylene fibers can be used as biologically active fibers.

In this study, polypropylene (PP) fibrous mats are modified by plasma treatment, following by chemical grafting. Initially, the as-prepared PP fibrous mats are treated by plasma at different oxygen (O2) and argon (Ar) ratios. Then, the PP fibrous mats are modified by grafting dopamine onto polar groups for in situ polymerizations, resulting in a polydopamine (PDA) coating on the substrate's surface. Time-sensitive wettability is thereby converted into permanent wettability in PP fibers. The morphology, chemical performance, and relative wettability of the modified PP fibers are then characterized. The experimental results show, using an O2/Ar ratio of 3:7 during plasma treatment, that the water contact angle was decreased from 114.2° to 0°, and the maximum grafting degree was 0.79%.

Wet electrostatic precipitators (wet ESPs) are good options for effective control of PM2.5 emission. However, the common problems of uniform water film formed on rigid collector limited the applicability of typical wet ESPs, thus could be tend to cause "spark-over" and "back-corona". This research was designed to test the performance of the polypropylene fibrous as collection electrodes for PM2.5 control in wet ESP. Meanwhile, drop spreading feature and volume resistivity measurements of polypropylene fibrous collector were investigated. The results show that drop spreading existed in imbibitions experiments between hydrophobic fabrics contacted with water. The difference of spreading characteristics was accordance to the physical woven properties of fabrics. The relationship between the volume resistivity of polypropylene fibrous and the water addition rate has been investigated. The secondary current by polypropylene collection electrode was 5~20 percent higher than that by FRP. The average number collection efficiencies by polypropylene collector amounted to 89.21% for PM2.5 when the gas residence time was 1.33s at 60kV. The relationship between water addition rate and average number collection efficiency was not more regular than other factors such as gas treatment time or applied voltage.

Based on the evaluation of fibrous concrete materials and the experiments of freezing-thawing resistance home and abroad, the present experiment takes relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and rate of mass reduction as an analytical index to conduct a comparative study on the effects of the mixing of four kinds of polypropylene fiber on the cement concrete freezing resistance. The results show that different kinds of polypropylene fiber have different influences on cement concrete freezing resistance. And some polypropylene can improve it while others may make it decreased.

At present, research on concrete-filled sections extends to using lightweight concrete to reduce the total weight of such structures. However, research on concrete-filled hollow sections (CFHS) using foamed concrete remains ongoing. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the strength of reinforced fibrous foamed CFHSs. Two types of fibre, namely, steel and polypropylene fibres, were used. A short-column specimen was prepared and tested under compression load. Result shows that adding steel fibre to foamed concrete indicates a higher strength than adding polypropylene fibre. The strength of the CFHS is increased by adding reinforced bar and fibre in foamed concrete.

In this paper, we present an IR spectroscopy study of the molecular and supramolecular structure of the polypropylene fibre, used as a metal nanoparticle carrier, by the example of nanoparticles of tin dioxide. The aim of this work is to investigate the changes in the chemical structure of the polypropylene melt-blown web when modified with the tin dioxide nanoparticles. The paper shows that the metal-oxygen valence vibration bands appear in the IR spectra of modified polypropylene fibrous carriers. At the same time, the carrier material remains stereoregular and possess a helical structure.

The wollastonite/PP composites were manufactured by twin-screw extruder and the effects of compatabilizer, feeding method and screw configuration on the properties of wollastonite/PP composites were investigated in this paper. The dispersion of fibrous wollastonite in PP matrix was determined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the strength, toughness and flowability of the composite were simultaneously guaranteed by using three different types of PP resins, and the interfacial adhesion was improved greatly by adding the compatabilizer of PP-g-MAH, which increases the comprehensive properties of wollastonite/PP composite. The fibrous dispersion of wollastonite in PP matrix was achieved by using of side feeding and the weak-shear screw configuration, which reaches the good reinforcing effect.

In recent years, geopolymer concrete (GC) has become more popular in construction because of its multiple benefits, such as eco-friendliness, high temperature resistance and resistance to chemical attack in harsh environments. However, GC has limited deformation capability and tensile strength compared to ordinary concrete. Geopolymer fibrous concrete (GFC) exhibits high mechanical properties, such as compressive strength and impact strength. This study aimed to develop a novel composite comprising GFC at the tension zone and GC at the compression zone, and vice versa, are these composites were examined. The impact resistance of two-layered GC-GFC with various ratios (25–75, 50–50, 75–25%) was examined. In addition, a single layer specimen comprising GC and GFC was fabricated and tested as the reference specimen. Twenty-nine mixtures were developed and divided into four series. Four different types of fibre were used in this study; short polypropylene fibre, long polypropylene fibre, short steel fibre and long steel fibre. The ACI committee 544 drop weight test was used to evaluate the impact strength of specimens. Results indicated that the impact strength of GFC was significantly improved in long steel fibre-based specimens. In addition, two-layered specimens comprising different fibres—short polypropylene, long polypropylene, short steel and long steel—exhibited a positive influence on impact strength. Compared to a single-layer specimen, inferior impact strength was recorded in the two-layered specimen.

Theobjectivewas to evaluate the possibilities of using the polypropylene mesh “Surgipro” to increase the compression and reduce the operational injury in extrapleural superior posterior thoracoplasty.Material and methods.64 cases of surgical treatment of fibrous-cavernous tuberculosis were studied. The volume of compression of the lung tissue and the effectiveness of the intervention were compared.Results.Clinical and radiologic examination of patients in three weeks after the operation indicates that occurrence of exacerbation, preservation of bacterial excretion and lack of compression are much lower in the group using polypropylene mesh. The use of polypropylene mesh “Surgipro” increases the degree of compression in the field of intervention and the effectiveness of thoracoplasty.Conclusion.The use of a mesh implant in thoracoplasty is reasonable and effective.

The objective of the study: to compare the efficacy of different modifications of thoracoplasty in patients with apical fibrous cavernous pulmonary tuberculosis.Subjects and methods. The article describes the analysis of the results of thoracoplasty in 65 fibrous cavernous pulmonary tuberculosis patients performed from 2016 to 2019. Three types of thoracoplasty were used: thoracoplasty with polypropylene mesh, osteoplastic thoracoplasty, and traditional thoracoplasty. The results were assessed by the severity of intraoperative trauma, development of bronchopulmonary complications, lack of compression, and healing of cavities.Results. No significant difference in the degree of intraoperative injury was found when comparing three types of thoracoplasty (p > 0.05). Clinical and X-ray examinations of patients in 3 weeks after surgery revealed that in thoracoplasty with a polypropylene mesh, the frequency of bronchopulmonary complications and lack of compression was lower than in other types of thoracoplasty (p < 0.05). Using the patient's own tissues for extrapleural fixation, especially with large cavities, results in a significant decrease in the thoracoplasty efficacy.

Disposability of nonconsumable products has become an increasing environmental concern. Convenience products are widely used in the United States, and fibrous disposables such as lightweight towels, diapers, medical supplies, and pads constitute a large share of these products. The fibrous disposables market is highly oriented to synthetic fibers, which are generally not biodegradable. In this study we evaluated differences in biodegradability of nonwoven fabrics containing cotton (C) and polypropylene (PP) fibers. It included 100% untreated cotton, blends of cotton with 20, 30, 50, and 75% polypropylene, and a chemically bonded 100% cotton. Biodegradability tests were conducted using ASTM procedure G 21-70 by exposing four replicate strips of the fabrics to combinations of fungi commonly found in soil for timed incubation periods. The fungi included Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosurn, Chaetomiwn virius, and Aureobasidium pullulans. Fabric strips (2.55 cm x 17.78 cm) were placed on a medium of nutrient-salts agar in lidded bioassay dishes.

The strengthening and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures is an important issue all over the world. Fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) are mainly used for the strength and rehabilitation of concrete members. However, its use is limited due to its high price and environmental effects and its adoption of epoxy as an adhesive, where epoxy is considered inefficient at high temperatures and loses most of its properties. The solution to this problem leads to the use of low-cost locally available geopolymer adhesive paste, with the possibility of adding fibers to improve the mechanical properties. This paper presents the experimental results of the circular RC columns confined by carbon fiber reinforced geopolymer adhesive (CFRGA) with fibers at geopolymer adhesive (GPA). Variables included; Geopolymer adhesive with or without fibers and type of fiber added to GPA (micro steel fibers, carbon fibers, and polypropylene fibers) with the volumetric ratio of (2%, 0.4%, 0.2%), respectively. The results where it was found that confinement by carbon fiber reinforced fibrous geopolymer adhesive improved the columns compressive strength estimated by (215%) and the axial strain improved by (268%). When adding (micro steel fibers, carbon fibers, and polypropylene fibers) to the adhesive led to an improvement in the strength of about (16.1%, 8.4%, and 7.96%) respectively, compared with the confined RC column without fibers at (GPA). Finally, confinements by carbon fiber reinforced geopolymer adhesive are more suitable for use in strengthening and rehabilitation of RC columns in areas with a hot climate.

The sorption properties of new iminodiacetate fibrous cation exchanger FIBAN XC-1 synthesized on a chemically resistant matrix of polypropylene fiber with a grafted copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene, which can withstand elevated temperatures and aggressive environments, were studied. It was shown that the fibrous chelate ion exchanger FIBAN XC-1 is an effective sorbent of heavy and non-ferrous metals from multi-ionic aqueous solutions under static and dynamic conditions. It was found that the cation exchanger operates at high speeds up to 20 column volumes / min in water purification from copper and lead ions (purification from Cu2+ – 82 % and purification from Pb2+– 65 %). It was found that the fibrous chelate ion exchanger FIBAN XC-1 is easily regenerated and does not lose its sorption and mechanical properties in the sorption– regeneration cycles.

Physicomechanical and tribotechnical properties of structural composite materials based on thermoplastic polymer and organomineral ingredients operating under friction and wear conditions during contact with pulp (raw cotton) have been investigated. The regularities of changes in the physical, mechanical and tribotechnical properties of structural composite materials during contact interaction with raw cotton were determined, the dependence of their properties on the type and content of graphite, mineral and fibrous fillers in structural composite materials was studied. It has been established that the nature and structure of fillers has a certain effect on the physical and mechanical properties of composite materials based on polypropylene. At the same time, fiber-filled compositions have the highest mechanical strength. It was also found that when mineral fillers are introduced into composite polymer materials, their coefficient of friction with raw cotton increases significantly, while the wear rate decreases, except for fillers with a plate structure (kaolin, talc), when used, a decrease in the coefficient of friction is observed. The introduction of carbon-graphite fillers into the composition of composite materials leads to a significant decrease in the coefficient of friction, temperature and static electricity charge in the friction zone with raw cotton. The introduction of fillers with a fibrous structure leads to a significant decrease in the rate of wear of the composites. It provides high strength and resistance of the material under thermomechanical action. Effective compositions of structural composite materials for work under conditions of contact interaction with fibrous mass have been developed, and their physical, mechanical and tribotechnical properties have been investigated.

The behavior of stone groundwood / polypropylene injection-molded composites was evaluated with and without coupling agent. Stone groundwood (SGW) is a fibrous material commonly prepared in a high yield process and mainly used for papermaking applications. In this work, the use of SGW fibers was explored as a reinforcing element of polypropylene (PP) composites. The surface charge density of the composite components was evaluated, as well as the fiber’s length and diameter inside the composite material. Two mixing extrusion processes were evaluated, and the use of a kinetic mixer, instead of an internal mixer, resulted in longer mean fiber lengths of the reinforcing fibers. On the other hand, the accessibility of surface hydroxyl groups of stone groundwood fibers was improved by treating the fibers with 5% of sodium hydroxide, resulting in a noticeable increase of the tensile strength of the composites, for a similar percentage of coupling agent. A new parameter called Fiber Tensile Strength Factor is defined and used as a baseline for the comparison of the properties of the different composite materials. Finally the competitiveness of stone groundwood / polypropylene / polypropylene-co-maleic anhydride system, which compared favorably to sized glass-fiber / polypropylene GF/PP and glass-fiber / polypropylene / polypropylene-co-maleic anhydride composite formulations, was quantified by means of the fiber tensile strength factor.

Tissue integration and implant characteristics of various biomaterials commonly used for inguinal hernia repair have not been studied extensively. The aim of this study is to compare behavior and tissue response between two new polyester prostheses and a commonly used polypropylene (PP) mesh. The polyester prostheses utilized were polyester flat (PF) and polyester soft three-dimensional (PS); the PP mesh utilized was Marlex®. Eight randomly assigned 4 x 4-cm2 pieces of two different meshes were fixed in the preperitoneal space with a centrally placed single suture. Gross evaluation included shrinkage and stiffness. Histological evaluation included amount of fibrous and fat encapsulation, connective tissue, foreign-body reaction, neovascularization, hemorrhage, necrosis, and exudate. Evaluations were graded on a zero to four scale. The area and the area ratio were measured using a calibrated micrometer. PP mesh resulted in more fibrous encapsulation and stiffness than PF and PS prostheses. PP also resulted in less connective tissue formation and foreign-body reaction than PF and PS prostheses. There was no difference in fat encapsulation, necrosis, hemorrhage, or exudate between prostheses. Both polyester prostheses (PF and PS) have better tissue integration than the PP mesh, as evidenced by the higher amount of connective tissue and lower extent of fibrous encapsulation.

Results of the molecular dynamic simulation of the interaction of low-energy ions (from 10 to 100 eV) with the surface of polypropylene fibrous materials in low pressure radio-frequency (RF) argon plasma is presented. A full-atomic model using the LAMMPS classical molecular dynamics code was made. As a result of numerical calculations, it was found that argon ion bombardment initiates the breaking both of an intermolecular and intramolecular bond of polypropylene with sputtered particles being the hydrocarbon radicals and single atoms. The depth of implantation of the ion is determined, the change in the kinetic energy of the argon atom and the temperature of the simulated cell is obtained.

PURPOSE: To compare the use of polypropylene and PTFE meshes in the treatment of incisional hernias made experimentally on Wistar rats. METHODS: The experiment used 24 Wistar rats divided into three cohorts: C-A (ressection of a segment of abdominal wall), E-A (ressection and placement of PTFEe mesh), E-B (resection and placement of polypropylene mesh). After 28 days, the mesh and the surrounding tissue were removed and submitted to macroscopic analysis (assessment of the abdominal wall for presence of abscess in the surgical wound and/or skin necrosis, and adhesions) as well as microscopic analysis (presence of fibrosis, necrosis and abscess, counting of macrophages, mononuclears and polymorphonuclears). RESULTS: Adhesions and abscesses in the surgical wound were observed more commonly associated to the group treated with PTFEe. The size of the fibrous tissue was greater in the group treated with polypropylene. Cohort E-A showed PTFEe mesh enveloped by organized fine connective tissue. No groups presented necrosis on the site of the insertion. The highest mononuclear inflammatory reaction occurred in association to PTFEe when compared to the control group, but the findings for the polypropylene mesh were also significant when compared to the control group. In the analysis of the results obtained for cohorts E-A and E-B, a minimal occurrence of polymorphonuclears was noticed in both groups, which indicates low tissue reactivity to both materials used in the present experiment. CONCLUSION: Even with epithelization and proliferation of connective tissue, anchorage between PTFEe and abdominal wall is insufficient, which can result in reherniations.

This work deals with the plastic deformation of polypropylene, PAN-based carbon and Kevlar fibres at different gauge lengths and uses the Weibull model. A statistical analysis for the fibre strength and breaking strain is presented to test the experimental data relating to the fibre deformation. The mechanical parameters such as fibre strength, breaking strain and Young's modulus have been studied as a function of gauge length. It was found that both strength and breaking strain increase as fibre gauge length decreases, while the Young's modulus increases with increasing gauge length and depends on both strength and breaking strain. The output of the analysis supports the concept that the Weibull model is a good technique to specify the statistical distribution for strength and breaking strain of fibres and of suitable to investigate, is the deformation behaviour of fibrous polymeric materials in general.

Polymers such as polyvinylidene difluoride, polypropylene and polyamide-11 show great promise for providing light-weight, flexible and fibrous piezoelectric materials that can be integrated into technical textile fabric structures for energy harvesting applications. Durability is an important parameter for the textiles and especially for functional and smart materials. This research work provides an insight on the piezoelectric behaviour of polypropylene, polyamide-11 and polyvinylidene difluoride in terms of peak-to-peak voltage generation capabilities after washing at 40°C with the addition of detergent as described in test method BS EN ISO 105-C06:2010. It was observed that the peak-to-peak voltage generated by polypropylene monofilaments retained similar values with only slight differences, while the monofilaments of polyvinylidene difluoride and polyamide-11 showed higher peak-to-peak voltage generation after washing. These changes have been explained using the changes in the crystallinity and phase, as determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis.

The influence of fibrous and solid granulated fillers on the rheological and surface properties of the polymer compositions on the basis of polyvinyl alcohol and Na-carboxymethyl cellulose is demonstrated. The polymer complexes with Na-carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium tetraborate additions and the compositions filled with polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate and quartz sand are obtained and comparative assessment of the properties of studied polymer composites have been made. Polymer compositions with quartz sand, synthetic and plant fibrous fillers increase the effective viscosity, elasticity modulus and decrease the adhesive strength of all compositions based well on carboxymethyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol. The sodium tetraborate introduction promotes the formation of the composites surface with the lesser adhesive strength.

Liquid transport in porous materials is affected significantly by the geometry of the non-uniform capillaries. In this study, an N-section lotus-rhizome-node-like non-uniform capillary model was for the first time proposed based on the plane Poiseuille flow and capillary pressure equation to investigate the liquid transport in porous fibrous media. Normalized total flow time of the non-uniform capillary was obtained as a function of the height and width ratio between the converging and diverging nodes and their total number. The results indicated that the velocity of liquid transport greatly depended on the number of nodes in a certain liquid transport length. The non-uniform capillaries with frequent alterations between converging and diverging nodes have low liquid transport efficiency. The thick capillary exhibits fast liquid transport efficiency in those capillaries with the same self-similar geometry. The model was verified using polypropylene filament yarns and different liquids. The results agreed well with the theoretical prediction. This work not only provides a deeper understanding of liquid transport inside porous fibrous media with non-uniform capillaries, but can also guide the novel design and optimization of functional fibrous materials.

The filtration operation is one of the most widely used procedures in gas-solid separation due to its high removal efficiency, low cost and low sensitivity to variations in operating conditions. Therefore, the objective of this work is to study the effects of operating variables (pressure drop, filtration velocities and cleaning velocity) on the formation of filter cakes using gas-solid polypropylene filter media and particulate matter as for instance phosphate rock. The filtration velocities evaluated were 5, 7.5 and 10 cm/s with maximum pressure drops of 100, 200, 300 and 400mm H2O and filter cleaning velocities of 15 cm/s by the reverse air flow method. The cake filtration porosity was estimated using the classical Ergun equation (1952) in the literature. The results led to important correlations for the use of fibrous filters in the removal of particles suspended in in micrometer aerosols.

Preplaced aggregate fibrous concrete (PAFC) is a revolutionary kind of concrete composite that is gaining popularity and attracting the interest of academics from across the world. PAFC is a uniquely designed concrete prepared by stacking and packing premixed fibers and coarse aggregate in a steel mold. The gaps between the fibers and aggregates are subsequently filled by injecting a cement grout with high flowability. This study investigates the impact performance of three different sizes of PAFC beams. Steel and polypropylene fibers were used in a 3% dosage to make three different beam sizes, measuring 550 × 150 × 150 mm, 400 × 100 × 100 mm, and 250 × 50 × 50 mm. According to ACI Committee 544, all beams were subjected to a drop weight flexural impact test. Compressive strength, impact energies at initial crack and failure, ductility index, and failure mode were evaluated. Additionally, analytical modeling was used to compute the failure impact energy for the fibrous beams. The results showed that the addition of fibers increased the capacity of the tested beams to absorb greater flexural impact energy. Compared to polypropylene fibers, steel fibers had better crack propagation and opening resistance because of their higher tensile strength and crimped and hooked end configuration. For all large-size beams, the analysis of the percentage increase in impact energy at the failure stages was found to be 5.3 to 14.6 times higher than the impact energy at cracking.

Purpose Concrete-filled hollow section (CFHS) is widely used in steel construction. The combination of concrete and steel decreases buckling and deformation of steel. However, studies reveal that using normal concrete increases the dead weight of a structure. Therefore, a lightweight concrete, such as foamed concrete (FC), is proposed to reduce the weight of the structure. The purpose of this study is to determine the strength of modified fibrous foamed CFHS (FCFHS). Design/methodology/approach Steel and polypropylene fibres were used with rice husk ash, and short column fibrous FCFHSs were tested under compression load. Greased and non-greased methods were adopted to determine bond strength and confining effect between steel and concrete. Findings Results indicate that the use of fibre in FCFHSs improves the strength of CFHS from 9% to 11%. The non-greased method confirms that an interaction exists between steel and concrete with a confinement coefficient of more than 2.0. Originality/value It can be shown that the modified fibrous foamed concrete can increase the strength of the concrete and can be used as concrete filled in steel construction industry.

The increase in the construction of high-rise, technically complex buildings and structures is a prerequisite for the widespread use of structures of heavy concrete. In this work, a special type of destruction of this type of concrete is considered in the fire action explosive spalling. One method of protection is polypropylene microfiber, the objective of which is to increase the fire resistance of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. The fire resistance tests of the reinforced concrete structure with the use of microfiber and without it have been carried out. It is shown that polypropylene microfiber can completely prevent explosive spelling of concrete. In addition, the introduction of additives in the form of fibrous materials into the concrete mix is the most optimal from the point of view of labor intensity and material costs.

The aim of the present work is to verify experimentally the influence of the charge level on collection efficiency during the first stages of filtration. A charge classifier was used to measure the charge level of the aerosol as a function of particle diameter. The filter was made of polypropylene with diameter of 0.047 m and a thickness of 2.6 mm. The solid particles used as test dust were a phosphate rock powder (density 2940 kg/m3 and average Stokes diameter of 3.40 m). The aerosol was dispersed by a TSI Venturi type generator. The particle charging was achieved by a corona charger. In all the tests performed, a linear relation between the particles acquired charge and their diameter was observed. A gradual increase of the charge level was observed with an increase of the tension in the corona charger (0, -3, -6 kV). The filtration results indicated that the global collection efficiency of the filter was very sensitive to the variation of the charge level of the particles. Both efficiency and pressure drop increased when the charge level increased. During the tests, the small increase in pressure drop indicated that the cake had not yet been formed.
