Streszczenie:
The sensitivity of mental workload measures is influenced by cultural and individual factors. One individual factor that is hypothesized to influence mental workload is time orientation. The aim of this study is to observe the influence of time orientation on temporal demand and subjective mental workload. One hundred and two participants representing three different time orientations, namely monochronic, neutral, and polychronic orientations, assessed using the Modified Polychronic Attitude Index 3 (MPAI3), voluntarily participated in this study. Participants were instructed to complete a search and count task in four different conditions with varying degrees of difficulty. Mental workload was assessed using subjective (NASA-TLX) and objective (heart rate variability, or HRV) methods and analyzed for each condition. The results show that, with comparable performance and comparable HRV, monochronic participants show higher sensitivity than neutral or polychronic participants in subjective mental workload, particularly the temporal demand dimension. The implications are discussed.

Streszczenie:
System response delay has been cited as the single most frustrating aspect of using the Internet and the most worrisomeaspect of Web application design. System response time (SRT) research generally concludes that delay should be eliminated where possible to as little as a few seconds, even though delay reduction is costly. Unfortunately, it is not clear if these conclusions are appropriate outside of the developed world where nearly all of the SRT research has taken place. Cultural effects have been, hence, generally missing from SRT research. The one SRT study to date outside of the developed world did report differences using the theoretical construct of cultural chronism, and this finding could limit the generalizability of SRT research findings from developed countries to many economically developing nations. However, limitations and potential confounds in this single study render those findings tentative. The end of Apartheid in South Africa allowed an opportunity to conduct a longitudinal free simulation experiment that overcomes the critical limitations of this previous research. Subjects were members of historically polychronic and monochronic groups who had been segregated by Apartheid and now live in an integrated society with shared infrastructure and computer access. Results find that members of the historically polychronic group are more accepting of longer delays and are more willing to trade longer delays for improved functionality than are their historically monochronic counterparts. Furthermore, tests find that members of the historically monochromic population that came of age in a desegregated, majority-polychronic culture appear to be polychronic themselves and to differ significantly from the older monochronic generation. Results from this study can be applied to design culturally sensitive applications for users in the developing economies of the world.

The present study intended to investigate the effect of polychronicity and time management on work-related quality of life among bank employees. It also attempted to examine the moderating role of time management in predicting work-related quality of life from polychronic tendencies. Gender differences were also investigated along the study variables. Purposive sample consisted of 300 bank employees including men and women with age range of 27 to 52 years (M = 32.5, SD = 4.26) was acquired. Measures of Polychronic Attitude Index (Kaufman, Lane, & Lindquist, 1991), Time Management Behavior Scale (Poposki, Oswald, & Chen, 2008), and Work-related Quality of Life Scale (Zeng et al., 2011) were used to assess study variables. Results showed that polychronicity was negatively associated with time management and work-related quality of life, while time management and work-related quality of life were positively aligned with each other. Findings also revealed that time management buffers the relationship between polychronicity and work-related quality of life and offered a cushioning effect against the repercussions of ploychronicity. Gender differences indicated that men reflected less polychronic tendencies, better time management, and elevated work-related quality of life as compared to their female counterparts. Findings of the present study would bear practical implications for job design and managing various tasks at workplace.

Streszczenie:
Context. This commentary is based on an innovative approach to the development of predictive analytics. It is centered on the development of predictive models for varying stages of chronic disease through integrating all types of datasets, adds various new features to a theoretically driven data warehousing, creates purpose-specific prediction models, and integrates multi-criteria predictions of chronic disease progression based on a biomedical evolutionary learning platform. After merging across-center databases based on the risk factors identified from modeling the predictors of chronic disease progression, the collaborative investigators could conduct multi-center verification of the predictive model and further develop a clinical decision support system coupled with visualization of a shared decision-making feature for patient care. The Study Problem. The success of health services management research is dependent upon the stability of pattern detection and the usefulness of nosological classification formulated from big-data-to-knowledge research on chronic conditions. However, longitudinal observations with multiple waves of predictors and outcomes are needed to capture the evolution of polychronic conditions. Motivation. The transitional probabilities could be estimated from big-data analysis with further verification. Simulation or predictive models could then generate a useful explanatory pathogenesis of the end-stage-disorder or outcomes. Hence, the clinical decision support system for patient-centered interventions could be systematically designed and executed. Methodology. A customized algorithm for polychronic conditions coupled with constraints-oriented reasoning approaches is suggested. Based on theoretical specifications of causal inquiries, we could mitigate the effects of multiple confounding factors in conducting evaluation research on the determinants of patient care outcomes. This is what we consider as the mechanism for avoiding the black-box expression in the formulation of predictive analytics. The remaining task is to gather new data to verify the practical utility of the proposed and validated predictive equation(s). More specifically, this includes two approaches guiding future research on chronic disease and care management: (1) To develop a biomedical evolutionary learning platform to predict the risk of polychronic conditions at various stages, especially for predicting the micro- and macro-cardiovascular complications experienced by patients with Type 2 diabetes for multidisciplinary care; and (2) to formulate appropriate prescriptive intervention services, such as patient-centered care management interventions for a high-risk group of patients with polychronic conditions. Conclusions. The commentary has identified trends, challenges, and solutions in conducting innovative AI-based healthcare research that can improve understandings of disease-state transitions from diabetes to other chronic polychronic conditions. Hence, better predictive models could be further formulated to expand from inductive (problem solving) to deductive (theory based and hypothesis testing) inquiries in care management research.

This study sought to measure polychronicity in the Ghanaian public sector. A qualitative approach was applied to the data collection. An improved polychronic attitude scale was used as the overall measure of monochronic/polychronic tendencies. This scale had been developed, tested and modified for the management setting to be utilized in measuring departmental or organizational polychronicity. A convenience selection of 30 participants from the Takoradi Technical University was done, and those selected were interviewed, using a semi-structured interview guide. Creswell and Poth’s (2018) Analysis Spiral Plan used was to handle the data, and the findings showed a disposition towards monochronic behavior. There was evidence of generally positive results when the impact of the polychronicity of the participants was evaluated, although participants exhibiting monochronic tendencies benefited the most. All the participants, irrespective of their polychronicity inclination, demonstrated that their time use preference helped them get work done. Again, their communication context aided them to achieve their communication objective. Also, the managements of public sector organizations, knowing the monochronic tendencies of their administators should strategize and implement policies such as polychronic superiors being tolerant with their surbordinates who are likely to be monochronic in their approach to work. In addtition, the institution should device and adopt a means of communication which is low context in nature to correspond with the monochronic tendencies of the workers. The results presented are part of a doctoral thesis which is being finalized. The research is centred on the online distance learning student experience in higher education, considering the variable time management, its relationship with technologies, and the virtualization of teaching and learning. Exploratory in nature, the research takes the form of a case study using a mixed methodology. One of the main objectives of the study is to contribute to the construction of a theoretical framework on the distance learning student time variable. We present a profile of academic time use by e-students (monochronic or polychronic) and suggest an intermediate profile. The conclusions point out that the profile of academic time use varies according to the degree of the course attended. It was found that undergraduate students show a more polychronic profile than masters and doctoral students.

Employees’ organization-based self-esteem (OBSE), defined as ‘the degree to which an individual believes him/herself to be capable, significant, and worthy as an organizational member’ (Pierce and Gardner, 2004: 593), can be increased by giving them tasks that fit their dispositions. The primary purpose of our study is to examine combinations, instead of individual dispositions separately, on OBSE. Specifically, to increase OBSE, we propose that giving employees who prefer to handle multiple tasks simultaneously (people who are polychronic) more task variety. This effect will be stronger for employees with high motivation to achieve (achievement striving). The hypotheses were tested using data collected from 260 middle managers and their immediate supervisors in three Chinese organizations. We found that offering more task variety to polychronic employees with high levels of achievement striving resulted in the highest levels of OBSE.

Oftentimes nations, societies, or communities are categorized based on cultural values, such as time orientation and social self-construal. Here, time orientation is represented by the dimensions of monochronism and polychronism; and social self-construal as individualism and collectivism. In some cases, it has been argued that individualism is complementary to the traits of monochronism, and collectivism is complementary to that of polychronism. Consequently, cultural communities have often been grouped as monochronic and individualistic (MONO+INDV), or polychronic and collectivistic (POLY+COLL), with little focus being allocated to unique cultural nuances. This paper represents cross-cultural philosophy, where cultural values are compared through the strategies of philosophical conceptual analysis and interpretive philosophical reflection. Specifically, this paper accentuates that focus should be allocated to cultural nuances of POLY+COLL cultures instead of grouping such cultures under one blanket conceptualization. Attention is allocated to three POLY+COLL cultures that are similar in some aspects but different in others. The cultures that receive such attention is to be found in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The purpose is thus threefold. First, it introduces the categories of cultural values; second, it presents three different POLY+COLL cultures; and lastly, the three seemingly similar POLY+COLL cultures are placed in comparison—based on themes identified in the discussion—to facilitate better differentiation. As a result, it is elucidated that attention must be allocated to cultural nuances when conducting cross-cultural studies as this is identified as a gap in the knowledge-base.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a piece of research concerning the time management of Cypriot primary school principals. Time management refers to the interrelation of five independent variables: the various tasks principals perform, their frequency, the degree of accomplishment of those tasks, the use of time management techniques and time management style (from monochronic to polychronic). Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative methods were used (questionnaire) together with qualitative methods (observation, interviews, collection of artifacts), in order to obtain richer, deeper data and view multiple angles of the same phenomenon. Findings – The results of cluster analysis indicated three different time management profiles/types of principals: The Centralized Monochrons, the Procrastinative Managers and the Decentralized Polychrons. One basic conclusion is that the principals who adopt the practices of the Decentralized Polychrons manage better their time. Practical implications – The three time management profiles of principals are described, analysed, and discussed in order to reach conclusions about the selection, training, and placement of school principals. Through the description of the everyday practice of Cypriot principals useful information concerning school leadership and management are also provided. Finally, the conclusions of this research may prove useful for principals, because they are provided with the opportunity to rethink and evaluate their own time management and effectiveness of their daily practices. Originality/value – The creation and description of the three time management profiles is the main contribution of this piece of research, since there are not any time management types-profiles registered in the bibliography, which were produced with the use of scientific instruments and procedures.

The article presents the results of a comprehensive socio-psychological study, including qualitative and quantitative methods. The role of cultural factor in the formation of adaptation mechanisms in foreign students studying in Russian Universities is demonstrated. The number of international students is one of the indicators of how successful an institution is on the world market of educational services. The international character of modern education can be observed in the increase of academic mobility and the growth of the number of international students. Most often, people manage to adapt to a new socio-cultural environment by modifying their stereotypes and behavioural patterns, yet, they may remain internally alienated from the social environment. An increasing number of international students in Russia and the need to create a favourable educational environment for them motivates researchers to study the peculiarities of how such students adapt to radically new living and learning conditions. Successful adaptation ensures fast integration into the learning process and an overall improvement of the quality of education for those young people. The results of the current study will hopefully contribute to the identification of coping strategies, adaptation features, and anticipatory mechanisms depending on their cultural backgrounds. The respondents were representatives of a polychronic, polyactive and high-context culture (students from Arab countries, n = 64) and representatives of lowcontext and polychronic cultures (students from India, n = 73); all of them studying in Russia from one to three years. The Arabic-speaking students were found to adapt to the learning process easier than their Indian counterparts: they were more involved in a group’s activity, and situational anticipatory competence was better developed with them. At the same time, the Indian students were found to be more eager to seek social support; also it was extremely difficult for them to predict situations associated with time and interpersonal communication.

Based on a meso-level model of organizational temporality, this study examined U.S. immigrant workers’ workplace temporal enactment and construal regarding cultural time orientation (monochronic vs. polychronic), acculturation type (assimilation, integration, segregation), and mobile technology use. Analyses revealed that cultural time orientation and acculturation type interacted to influence separated enactment of organizational temporality, and immigrant workers’ acculturation type and mobile use for work had significant interaction effects on their future- and present-time perspective. Participants with integrated and assimilated acculturation were more likely to experience time in ways consistent with the Western, industrialized organizations’ temporality, whereas those with the segregated acculturation reported a distinct pattern of temporal enactment and construal in relation to mobile phone use for work.

Negotiation is a kind of communication between contractual partners having a target, a consensual objective to achieve. In an international negotiation, the businessmen have to know the culture of their partner in order to approach him according to his language, habits, traditions, moral and religious customs. In Europe we know two kinds of cultures: monochronic and polychronic cultures and some authors describe the cultural trinity (Northern, Central and Southern geographical oriented cultures). In the European Union the trend is to have UNITY IN DIVERSITY, proper to the prospective European family, defined by tolerance, understanding, competitive alliances and win-win negotiations. This goal will be achieved by knowing the cross cultural differences, playing the role of the adult negotiator, tolerant, knowing and understanding each other.

Streszczenie:
Introduction. The primary task, aimed at meeting the needs of our own titanium raw materials, is to put into operation as soon as possible the deposits in which spatially and paragenetically different ore bearing capacity is combined in a spatial and paragenetic way and which have sufficient detail been studied. One of these deposits is Mezhyrichne, which is located within the Volyn megablock, in the central part of the Korosten pluton, Zhytomyr region. Within the deposit, several areas have been identified, including Bukinska. The purpose of the publication. To investigate the ilmenite ore-bearing of the polygenic-polychronic spatial-paragenetic ore-bearing system within the Bukinska area, which is composed of ore-bearing rocks of the foundation, their weathering crust, continental alluvial (Aptian-Lower Albian) deposits (formed due to erosion and redeposition of eluvium) and coastal-sea (Turonian) formations (formed due to erosion and redeposition of Lower Cretaceous alluvium and partially weathering crust). Materials and Methodology. The methodical and methodological basis of the research was the work of the autors on the structural and lithological modeling of placers of heavy minerals. The actual material for the studies were the production reports and scientific publications. A target database was created for cartographic modeling of the structure and quality indicators (distribution of ilmenite content along the lateral spread and vertical cross-sections of wells) of the rocks. The database contains the coordinates of 1635 wells, their description, test results. Cartographic constructions were made in Inkscape, Golden Software Strater, and Golden Software Surfer software. Correlations between certain parameters of ore-bearing sediments were studied in Microsoft Excell. Main Results. Information on the geological structure of the Bukinska area of the Mezhyrichne titanium ore deposit is given. It has been found that the ore-bearing potential of the area is determined by a polygenic-polychronic spatially-paragenetically connected ore system. This ore system is composed of titanium-bearing rocks of the crystalline basement of the Volodarsk-Volyn complex, their weathering crusts, Lower Cretaceous continental, Upper Cretaceous coastal – marine products of erosion and redeposition of eluvium and to a lesser extent and partially heterogeneous formations of the Quaternary system. Maps of the relief of the bottom, the top surface and thickness of the ore-bearing rocks have been constructed. The lateral distribution of the average ilmenite content in all rock types was studied. The directionality and strength of correlations were investigated. The peculiarities of the distribution of ilmenite in the vertical section of formations of different ages and different genesis have been clarified. Conclusions. A target database was created, on the basis of which a set of maps was built, which made it possible to study the structural and material parameters of ore-bearing deposits. The ore-bearing potential of the polygenic-polychronic spatial-paragenetic system of the Bukinska area was qualitatively and quantitatively assessed. It has been found that the Bukinska area, within which there is a spatially and paragenetically combined temporal and heterogeneous ore bearing, has a significant ore-bearing potential and is attractive for investment. The obtained results are an information base for supporting mining operations.

Background: In recent years the role of school principals is becoming increasingly complex and responsible. Methods: This study was voluntarily attended by 419 Italian school principals who were administered the Psychological Stress Measurement (MSP), Mindfulness Organizing Scale (MOS), Polychronic-Monochronic Tendency Scale (PMTS), and the Scale of Emotions at Work (SEW). Results: The study has produced a path analysis model in which the relationships between the main predictors of principals’ work discomfort were explained. The effect of depressive anxiety on perceived discomfort (ß = 0.517) found a protective mediator in the mindfulness component that recognizes the sharing as a fundamental operational tool (ß = −0.206), while an increasing sense of effort and confusion could significantly amplify the experience of psychological discomfort associated with the exercise of school leadership (ß = 0.254). Conclusions: The model developed in this study suggests that focusing on organizing mindfulness can be a valuable guideline for interventions.

This study investigated the influence of time pressure perception and social ties on the supplier selection decisions and performance of public firms in a typically polychronic cultural setting. Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from 342 senior level personnel in 40 public sector organizations in Nigeria and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques. The study’s results indicate that while time pressure has no significant influence on supplier selection decision, its impact on performance is significant and negative. The results also show that social ties are significant positive predictors of supplier selection decisions, but their relationship with performance is insignificant. However, the study also found that supplier selection decisions positively influence performance, and supplier selection decisions positively mediates the relationship between social ties and perceived performance. Based on the study’s findings and conclusions, important implications for practice and suggestions for further research are discussed.

In this article, I propose a methodology to investigate “timescapes” in Japanese history from an anthropological perspective by analyzing historical sources on social activities, more specifically on sleeping and napping. Such an analysis provides the methodological basis for a research project on premodern Japanese “timescapes” at the University of Cambridge. Rather than studying the social use of the clock to investigate the extent to which various time structures have penetrated people’s private lives, I approach these questions by paying attention to how sleep and other social activities have been organized on a socio-temporal level—in other words, how people have been “doing time.” I argue that this focus makes abstract notions of time tangible. Issues discussed are time-use priorities, time measurement, appropriateness of performing certain tasks at specific times, regulating time as a tool of power, disciplining bodies through scheduling and early rising, as well as monochronic and polychronic time use.

While many firms are increasing salespeople’s service expectations alongside selling responsibilities, evidence suggests this strategy is difficult to implement. Yet research addressing this challenge for dual-role sales forces is limited. Utilizing matched, dyadic (salesperson-customer) data from business-to-business (B2B) selling firms across industries, we investigate the drivers and value-creation impact of salespeople tasked with performing sales and service activities—termed sales- service ambidextrous (SSA) behaviors. Given the importance of job fit in professional selling, we build from trait activation theory to identify salespeople’s preference for switching between multiple tasks within the same time period (i.e., polychronicity) as a key driver critical for enacting SSA behavior. Further, we illustrate contexts (i.e., task, social, and organizational) impacting the extent polychronic salespeople perform SSA behaviors. We also provide evidence that ambidextrous salespeople create increased value to customers through customers’ willingness to pay a price premium. Together, these findings help illustrate the practical considerations sales leaders should consider before initiating a dual-role sales force approach.

Abstract In the age of the Anthropocene, capitalism’s expansion and damage to the planet can ultimately be seen as “becoming extinction” (McBrien). This essay discusses post-neoliberal structurations of space, time, and consciousness by examining the “desert timescapes” featured in Don DeLillo’s philosophical novel, Point Omega (2010). The desert, placed at the novel’s heart, is analyzed as a prominent religious, aesthetic, and philosophical topos of the crisis of human subjectivity. Furthermore, the investigation of the conceptions in the novel of the “Omega Point” (as the ultimate point of consciousness toward which the universe is heading) reveals an interplay of transcendence and immanence about matter and human evolution and offers a geological perspective of “becoming-mineral.” Finally, this paper claims that the “desert timescapes” polychronic perspective challenges anthropocentrism and the ontopolitics of the neoliberal state, and paves the way for reflection on “geontopower” (Povinelli), Life and NonLife in a geophilosophical mode of planetary thinking. This paper examines the present 4IR’s predictive elements for sustaining organizational performance (OP) in the Nigerian banks. Therefore, in light of the existing 4IR, this article suggests strategies for improving and sustaining OP in the Nigerian banks. The report promoted a quantitative research method based on a survey study design. The findings indicated that, within the Nigerian banks in the 4IR, employees' polychronicity (EP), Leadership 4.0 (L4.0), and perceived organizational support (POS) significantly and jointly predicted the sustainability of OP. Thus, it is recommended that human resource professionals, organizational managers, and the Nigerian banking industry promote strategies for enhancing and maintaining organizational performance. These strategies include encouraging employees to adopt a polychronic mindset, increasing Leadership 4.0, and offering regular organizational support. Thus, this paper has recognized organizational support, Leadership 4.0, and employees’ polychronicity as significant influencers in predicting factors in sustaining organizational performance in the Nigerian banking business during the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The hospitality industry in Indonesia is growing rapidly but lagging behind the readiness of human resources. The hotel industry has a crucial problem of retaining employees where there is a gap between the interests of employees and the interests of the company. Turnover intention is the main predictor of turnover, so aspects that can affect turnover intention will affect turnover. This study aims to describe and analyze the relationships between variables and dimensions in the research model or paradigm developed by the researcher. It tested the conditional process model using path analysis based on OLS regression and bootstrap methods. The population in this study were employees of the hotel industry in Indonesia, with a sample of 257 employees. The findings of this study are that the work environment has no direct effect on the variables of job satisfaction, employee engagement, and turnover intention but can interact as a moderator variable so that it effectively moderates the impact of polychronic on turnover intention through full mediation of job satisfaction and employee engagement.

Given the importance of individual level creativity, this paper investigates the influence of employee polychronicity on employee creativity among nurses in the healthcare sector. The current research also tests how job engagement acts as a mediator between employees’ polychronicity and creativity. Finally, thepaper analyzes the role of functional flexibility as a moderator that enhances the influence of polychronicity on employee creativity. The current paper presents empirical research, and cross-sectional data were gathered from 457 nurses (Subordinate Staff) and 127 doctors (Supervisors) working in 37DHQ (District Head Quarters) hospitals in Pakistan. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple-regression techniques were applied for analyzing the collected data. The findings proved that the nurses’ polychronic attitude increases their creativity. Findings revealed that job commitment plays a mediating role between polychronicity and employee creativity. The findings proved that functional flexibility enhances the link between polychronicity and creativity. This research has contributed to both theory and managerial practice about the interplay of polychronicity, creativity, job engagement, and functional flexibility among nurses. The management in practice should focus on employee attitude, i.e., polychronicity, for improving their creativeness.

Crowdsourcing markets are expanding worldwide, but often feature standardized interfaces that ignore the cultural diversity of their workers, negatively impacting their well-being and productivity. To transform these workplace dynamics, this paper proposes creating culturally-aware workplace tools, specifically designed to adapt to the cultural dimensions of monochronic and polychronic work styles. We illustrate this approach with "CultureFit," a tool that we engineered based on extensive research in Chronemics and culture theories. To study and evaluate our tool in the real world, we conducted a field experiment with 55 workers from 24 different countries. Our field experiment revealed that CultureFit significantly improved the earnings of workers from cultural backgrounds often overlooked in design. Our study is among the pioneering efforts to examine culturally aware digital labor interventions. It also provides access to a dataset with over two million data points on culture and digital work, which can be leveraged for future research in this emerging field. The paper concludes by discussing the importance and future possibilities of incorporating cultural insights into the design of tools for digital labor.
