The present study examined polychronicity, an individual’s preference on engaging in multiple activities simultaneously as opposed to one at a time. In the restaurant setting, it is critical to understand whether a server prefers to engage in and switch among multiple tasks because it directly impacts the level of job satisfaction and work engagement the server experiences. The purpose of the study was to present a comprehensive view on relationships among time use preference, job satisfaction, work engagement, and turnover intention within a restaurant context. It was hypothesized that polychronicity positively predicted employee job satisfaction and work engagement and negatively predicted employee turnover intention. The sample of 251 respondents were full-time food and beverage servers working at full-service restaurants in the United States. A principle component factor analysis with varimax rotation was conducted to identify the factor structure of polychronicity, job satisfaction, work engagement, and turnover intention. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to empirically test the proposed hypotheses. The result of the analysis supported that polychronicity positively predicted job satisfaction and work engagement. In addition, both job satisfaction and work engagement negatively predicted turnover intention. However, the result did not support the hypothesized negative relationship between polychronicity and turnover intention. The findings of the study will assist restaurant managers in selecting candidates that best fit their organization. It will also assist employees in determining which career path best matches their personality traits. Managerial implications, limitations of this study, and direction for future study were discussed.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe work of architect Alberto Ponis dates back to a period (1960-1980) when vernacular architecture became a source of inspiration for many architects. His work includes a collection of 300 houses. Ponis pioneered a new architectural culture by developing an ethnographic approach, and the data he collected became the source of inspiration for his projects. In this way, he seems to be undertaking a deceleration that runs counter to his previous practice, confirming the observation that modernity is generating a crisis in our experience of time: the linear, vectorial, homogeneous and continuous temporality is sometimes found to be cyclical, repetitive, heterogeneous and discontinuous.Ponis's projects are made up of inherited ideas, each one a montage of references. His modus operandi reveals influences from a variety of contexts and periods. The houses he designs are arrangements of multiple temporalities (cosmological, geological, biological, historical, social, lived experience, etc.) producing a meaningful whole. We propose to narrate the story of this arrangement with a few houses that we interpret as various figures of multiple temporalities: the evolutionism figure, the survival figure or the geological figure. The aim of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of the multiple temporalities at work in some of the buildings designed by the architect Alberto Ponis. We have selected four houses for study based on to specific criteria: their pivotal position in the chronology of his work, their reception by architectural critics, their recent distribution, the availability of study materials, etc. To carry out these studies, we are employing various instruments of critical analysis borrowed from other disciplines such as art history or literary history. Finally, fieldwork is an integral part of our investigative approach. Several trips to Sardinia to meet Alberto Ponis, to explore his archives and these houses were necessary.By designing an architecture that is increasingly fused with the site, his imagination takes a long-term view and becomes “geological” (Ponis 2023). Through this decentring towards geology (Gaillardet 2023), towards this attention to things (Verbeek 2005), he proposes a new way of inhabiting the country and Sardinian time. Ponis thus composes “landscape-time” (Bensaude-Vincent 2021), in other words, he immerses human actions in the multiple cycles that govern the history of the Earth. This study also shows that the manipulation of temporalities by architects involves putting the world in which they are building into a narrative, making it possible, through the mediation of narrative temporality, to depict the development of experience that seems to be disappearing (Ricoeur 1983; Hamel 2006).This attention to “the built landscape without cultural precedent” (Smith 1966) seems to have been one of Ponis's major preoccupations since the 1970s. He makes a sensitive examination of geological precedents when designing his projects. The narrative that he produces with his constructions, and which he has since shared in various interviews, responds to the need to put human activity into a narrative in order to experience time.A critical analysis of the recent reception of Ponis's work and his discourse concludes our research. Our interest in his work sheds light on our concerns in times of crisis (Serres 2009) and the new limits of architectural practice

Pełny tekst źródłaRésumé :IN THE PROCESS OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND PERFECTION OF URBAN ART THE VARIETY OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF COLOUR DESIGN ENVIRONMENT WAS CREATED. A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE IS THAT COLOUR IN ARCHITECTURE WAS ALWAYS IN RELATION WITH HISTORICAL EPOCH AND THE COLOUR DESIGN ACTIVITY WAS DEPENDING ON POLITICS, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND AESTHETICS ASPECTS. THE PROBLEM OF VISUAL COLOUR HARMONY CREATION AND BUILDING OF ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT AS A SOURCE OF EMOTIONALLY LOADED HUMAN SENSATIONS IS A MORE IMPORTANT AND ACTUAL TASK FOR ARCHITECTS. OUR STUDY OF COLOUR EXPERIENCE IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF DIFFERENT CULTURES PROVE THAT ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS WOULD NEED TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BOTH NATIONAL AND LOCAL TRADITION AND MODERN COLOUR PREFERENCES, AND ABOUT HISTORICAL, ETHNOGRAPHICAL PECULIARITIES AND ETHNIC ORIGINALITY IN RELATION TO DIFFERENT REGIONAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXTS. THE PROCESS OF COLOUR DESIGN IS CARRIED OUT FROM TOWN PLANNING TILL INTERIOR DESIGN THANKS TO INTEGRAL ANALYSIS OF PERCEPTION'S CONDITIONS AND COLOUR KHOWLEDGE. ESTABLISHMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD COLOUR DESIGN CONCEPTION IS POSSIBLE WITH QPPLICQTION OF NCS - NATURAL COLOUR SYSTEM AS A LANGUAGE OF COMMUNICATION. IT WILL BE CONSIDERED AS A CORRELATION BETWEEN DEFFERENT STAGES OF REFLECTION AND REALIZATION OF THE PROJECT AS WELL AS FOR NEW AREAS, RECONSTRUCTION AND GENERAL RESTORATION OF CITIES

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study is about a category of roman sculptures found in the imperial world, from August reign to the 5th century. It is limited to coloured sculptures (statues and relieves) ; out of the architectural ones, and all in rapport with humans or animals illustrations. Not rare, this kind of painted or gilded sculpture, in stone, is a source of questions. So besides the classical searches concerning for example geography or chronology, this search gives some technical answer for painting and gilding : pigments, supports and its preparation,. . . A distinction between craft shops, through the use of colours has been tried too. Some hypotheses about why have coloured those pieces are possible too. They will be described here. For this, a examination about a possible meaning has been done ; idea directly in rapport with the ancient way of thinking, in literature but in other way, to daily fashion too. To finish an appendix completes this study. It contains some histograms and tables, to help the reader for a better comprehension

Pełny tekst źródłaThe study concerne the architectual polychromy of le corbusier, realized in the twenties. There is double aim : not only in order to understand the theoritic ground of the architect with regard to others artists of this period but also in order to expand the reflection about the notion of "synthesis of arts", appeared in hinself after the forties. The five buildings chosens are : la maison la roche-jeanneret (1923-25), les quartiers modernes fruges (1924-26), la villa stein-de monzie (1926-28), la villa baizeau (1927-30) and la villa savoye (1928-31). These polychromys are treated in each time as "theoric object" in itself. This approche allow to stand out new articulations in the question of color in architecture

Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this thesis is to offer a method for the correct description and the implementation of globally asynchronous locally synchronous systems (GALS). Therefore, we present an interpretation of the polychronous model of computation. More than the synchronous model, it permits to describe concurrency as well as sequentiality. Then, we observe and analyze different implementations of GALS systems to extract properties that we expect of such systems. We propose a method to synthesize systems by composition of basic processes. This composition uses two properties to ensure the equivalence between its synchronous and its asynchronous behaviours: Polyendochrony and Isochrony. Those two properties are compositional and are obtained by the basic processes from their appropriate Signal specifications. At last, we present a way to generate compiled code from poyendochronous processes already having the property of weak-endochrony. With this technique, it becomes possible to separately compile processes and then assemble them with asynchronous channels

Pełny tekst źródłaDigital holographic microscopy (DHM) is a promising versatile imaging technique for the identification of biomarkers of major psychiatric illnesses. However, images obtained by DHM are affected by coherent noise, which among other things prevents from properly distinguishing nerve branches in neural tissue. The project presented in this thesis aims to remove this defect thanks to a socalled polychromatic approach using a laser with modulable wave lengths. Using this approach, neuronal cultures and thin cells were imaged, revealing fine details, such as dendrites and cell organelles. The setup was then optimized to measure dynamical cellular responses. The strategy proposed here bodes well for the study of neuronal connectivity and the setup can be adapted for additional DHM applications in cellularbiology.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis work closely follows the historical evolution of the principal architectural styles in the contemporary epoch and the technical discoveries concerned. But it treats in particular the manifestations of the architectural polychromatics (wich constitutes the focus of the research), and it refers, first; to the classical antiquity in its contemporary interpretations, thereafter studying the eclecticism, the employment of materials like brick and its derivatives, and modern'style, movements that have confered chomatical diversities upon the urban space, up to the birth of the colourless functionalism (with finds its active contestors, the folleowers of the coloration of the facades). Passing in review are the movements of modern art, where the principal preoccupation has been the integration of colour in architecture. This development has led to a new artistic (and social) practice of architectural polychromatics, exercised by plastic artists who have elaborated new operational methods for colouring the built environment

Pełny tekst źródłaWhereas portals monopolizes the very attention of researchers, polychromic in gothic architecture is a rarely studied area. Following vivid debates during the XIXth Century, within which Viollet-le-Duc played an essential role, a major part of the XXth Century proved its very taste centerd upon the aesthetics of plain stone. Four roughly three decades, some remnants of colourings have been noticed everywhere in Europe but their study remains isolated. A synthesis of our knowledge seemed in order. Moreover, through about a hundred Alsatian edifices we have wished to show the significance of researches on the scale of a region. It is also proper to acknowledge the various settings alterations, indeed one cannot neglict the neo gothic polychromics. At last, art historian should be linked with restorations. And the question of architectural polychromics needs to be raised : it is a work of art ? If indeed it is, then it needs to be restored using the same methods as for figurative painting

Pełny tekst źródłaThe archaic Greeks were not colour-blind: it is rather the way they looked at colour which was different. Investigating this difference implies going back to ancient conceptions and seeking the coherence of the representations through all cultural habits. Words and gestures echo each other and convey similar social preoccupations: they shed light on the specific nature of the archaic spirit and aesthetics. Before anything, colour is like a drama that expresses the political tensions within the polis. It has an essential role in the construction of identities, it helps classifying and organising into a hierarchy. Colour signs remain profoundly polysemic. The way they are woven together reveal that, during the archaic period, the Greeks enjoyed colours to be mixed, in bright and contrasted tones – a mix to be paralleled with the notion of poikilia, a variegation that brings social pleasure and is the very symbol of excellence

Pełny tekst źródłaElephant ivory is a biological material composed of collagen fibers (CF) at 30 wt. % and Mg-enriched carbonated hydroxyapatite particles at 70 wt. % (Mg-carb-HAP). It has a complex hierarchical structure from macro- down to nano-scale. The relationship between the macroscopic Schreger patterns observed on the surface of transverse sections of tuks and the 3D micro-morphology of ivory (tubular network and CF secondary orientations) has been established. Chemical (Ca, P, Mg, Sr) and structural markers (thickness and organization of particles Mg-carb-HAP) which control the formation of ivory have been determined. Early diagenesis in the marine environment was then studied by means of SEM, PIXE/RBS-EBS and SAXS analyses. Diagenetic mechanisms were identified, as ionic adsorptions from marine environment to the tusk surfaces, ionic substitutions between exogenous and endogenous ivory ions and increased crystallinity of Mg-carb-HAP. Different states of preservation were observed among three tusks coming from the same submarine archaeological site. Good macroscopic preservation states of the surface does not necessarily reflect good preservation states of the dentin at the molecular level. Finally, the former polychromy and gilding of ivories from Arslan Tash (Syria, 800 BC.) have been reconstructed by non-invasive FF-FX and PIXE/RBS-EBS analyses. Egyptian blue and green (Cu) with different shades (Pb), as well as red and orange (Fe) have been identified. The gilding technique consisted of applying a 2 µm thick gold leaf. Over time, these decorations altered ivory surfaces inducing, among others, the formation of Au nanoparticles derived from the weathering of the gold leafs

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this thesis is to study the historical, technical, stylistic, and symbolic evolution of the polychromatic roofs found in Burgundy between the 14th and the 20th centuries. The different iconographic, archaeological and written testimonies make it possible to analyse the place of the polychromatic pattern in the architecture, the choice of patterns and colours, the use of differently-shaped tiles (whether lead- or tin-glazed), the type of production (traditional or industrial), the sociological analysis and the symbolic readings, the influence received or given as well as the overuse of the “Burgundian roofs” to promote the image of the region during the 20th century. The synthesis of the historical data shows the existence of two cycles: the first one, brought on by the Gothic constructions in Ile-de-France during the 12th and 13th centuries, began with the first Burgundian evidence in the 14th century and lasted until the decline in the 18th century; it includes the apogee represented by the architecture of 17th century. The second cycle, which has started around 1840, found its origin in the ancient constructions and in the revival of the European interest for the ceramic architectural elements. This creativity petered out after 1914, with the last productions of the second cycle occurring between 1935 and 1940. Eventually, the development of tourism and the search for regional identities led to the metonymical use of these polychromatic roofs in the 20th century

Pełny tekst źródłaThe study of materials and coloured decors of the abbey-church Cluny III is part of the Gunzo project (Arts et Métiers ParisTech – Cluny) which led the research and the promotion of the cluniac heritage thanks to digital technologies and virtual reality. This interdisciplinary team worked on the creation of a new digital model of the Maior Ecclesia, according to the latest scientific research, including the archaeological excavations and the study of the documentary and iconographic sources. Besides the architecture, it was also to propose a restoration of the decors of the abbey-church and its colourful atmosphere. The research in this doctoral work is focused on the fragments of archeological glass windows excavated in the sites of Cluny and Paray-le-Monial, as well as on the polychromies of the lapidary fragments of the Great Portal of Cluny using an archaeometric approach. The stained glass windows are filter elements that modulate the light in quantity and in colour. As such, they play a key role in creating a luminous and colourful atmosphere. The polychrome decors also contribute to the improvement and coloration of the lighting. Moreover, knowing the original materials is a prerequisite for any virtual restoration because of the possible alteration of pigments or metal decorations (color change) and possible repaints which can induce changes in colourful design.A large majority of glass fragments were excavated in the ruins of the churches, restricting their dating to a typo-chronological approach. The archaeological classifications performed from the relative chronology, typology and appearance of the vitreous material were compared with results of physicochemical analyses. These helped to refine the dating of certain fragments and identified many technical details. With regard to the portal of the Maior Ecclesia, which occupies a central place in the Romanesque art, the picture of this "lapidary puzzle" in iconography and in polychromy has been clarified. The characterization of the colourful remains has enabled identification of the different materials used in the decoration of the portal. Four polychrome phases, the use of expensive pigments and abundance of metal decorations were observed. In this way, this research has contributed to the understanding of the colourful decors of the Maior Ecclesia. This study represents a stage in the comprehension of an archaeological heritage which, sooner or later, will be further enhanced. It is important to remember that fragments of the abbey-church remain buried

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study focuses on the use of colors during the last stages of prehistory in the Near East, encompassing the Northern and Southern Levant, the Upper Tigris and Euphrates valleys and Mesopotamia, from the end of the Epipalaeolithic to the end of the Chalcolithic (ca. 12000-3000 cal. BC).This long period witnessed technical innovations and unprecedented social evolutions : sedentarization, development of agriculture and herding, invention of pottery and urbanization. Our aim was to explore how these different cultures have implemented colors in their architecture and their burials. What are these societies’ relationships to colored materials, local or imported ? How the use of colours changes ? What does it tell us about these societies ? Can we -and how- correlate them with technical and social developments specific to each culture ? Is it possible to recognize systems and dynamics at different scales – site, region, culture – and over the long term ? Data have been synthetized according a diachronic approach and put into perspective over several millennia. They show a dynamic use of colors, varying according to periods and geographical areas, and bring a new light to the understanding of these societies at the end of prehistory in the Near East

Pełny tekst źródłaThe Liber diversarum artium, second copy of a treatise on artistic technology probably written in the 1350s, is held at the Inter-university Library of Medicine of Montpellier, in a fifteenth century manuscript, Ms H277 (1470). The innovative structure of this text, the pre-1300s sources it draws on, and their dissemination, enabled us to compare it with works painted on wood and walls in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries preserved in Catalonia, as with any other coherent corpus. By virtue of the "historical" territory it covers in the Middle Ages, the number of works conserved and their wide aesthetic and technical variety, Catalonia provided this coherence. The selected paintings were considered from the perspective of materiality. The methodology developed for the task was structured as a constant dialectic between written and theoretical knowledge contained in the Liber or other treatises, and the practical knowledge applied by painters in Catalonia in the Romanesque period. Macroscopic observation of the works, the collection of physicochemical data concerning some of them, and our own experience, provided us with material that was conducive to understanding the painter's craft. This comparison produced a singular reading, in which thinking is focused on the painter in the learning and the exercise of his craft

Pełny tekst źródłaThe undertaking of this work is to analyze the forms and functions that the landscape can take in a corpus of posthomeric epic texts. The Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes and its late anonymous rewriting The Orphic Argonautica, the Posthomerica of Quintus Smyrnaeus, the Ilioupersis of Triphiodorus, and The Dionysiaca of Nonnus Panopolitanus provide us with a fruitful field of investigation for the analysis of the literary representations of the landscape as transhistorical. Firstly, our texts operate one transformation of the archaic epic landscape that is first the image of the world with which it merges (the conformity placed between shield, island, and world) by separating the landscape from this equation and giving it greater autonomy. The world is a mosaic of autonomous landscapes that gain texture as they take on a dimension of identity. The polymorphism of the landscape then gives its moving texture to the world of the ancient Greeks : the plastic and artist dimension is borrowed by the Epic text to put into words the images of the world, which reveal epic landforms. A variety of landscape patterns emerges and opens the literary intertext to the heterogeneity of artistic forms. From this fusion of process and forms, a singularity arises, a singularity particularly antique of the perception and the translation of the landscape : wonder. Landscape and wonder mingle so narrowly as to substitute one for the other : this is a possible definition of the ancient landscape from the Hellenistic period. But the landscape as thus identified and constructed also belongs to the world the image of which it contributes to form. It is clearly localized in a geographical perspective : the landscape becomes a vivid picture of the world and the former offers the latter its identity by its unique topical characteristics. It is a form of regional identification and it is sometimes confined to the vernacular. The landscape becomes an instrument for intellectual and cultural promotion. Between formal diversity and local singularity, the landscape travels between fiction and reality : its construction methods borrow from the literary and artistic and then extend to nature. The epic genre, characterised by innovative intertextuality, makes the landscape the image of the process of transposition and adaptation. As a manifestation of the exercise of a singular and then a collective ancient subjectivity, the landscape is an instrument for measuring the unfolding of the imagination at work in the complex process of literary reception and cultural transmission ; the ancient landscape between transmission and invention, opens itself up to the everyday and social experience. Its ancient existence is effective

Social culture, individuals’ experience and value will affect individuals’ time use. The organization may get in trouble on work and communication due to the difference of employees’ time perception and time use. People who have polychronic value prefer to engage in multiple tasks simultaneously and believe their preference is the best way to doing thing. Previous researches about the relationship between polychromic value and working behavior were few, and their outcome were inconsistent. This research not only emphasizes the relation between polychromic value and organizational citizenship behavior(OCB), but also focuses on the moderate effect of relationship orientation. The relationship orientation culture is compatible with polychromic value. There are 201 survey questionnaires were finished by some employees and their supervisors. The result of the research indicates that individuals’ polychronic value has positive influence on more organizational citizenship behavior - individual(OCB-I). In addition, relationship orientation has moderate effect; when relationship orientation was lower, more polychromic value employees have more organizational citizenship behavior – organization(OCB-O). Further implications and possible application were also discussed.

Pełny tekst źródłaConsidering online distance learning, teachers and students are closer than ever pedagogically, despite of physical distance. The internet has settling the beginning of a new teaching and learning generation, in which the boundaries of space and barriers of time allow synchronous or asynchronous communication in a hybrid time and space where the meaning of the word distance has gained new outlines and timelines were broken to origin the rising of an eternal time, without present or past and, considering the latest advances in virtual reality and artificial intelligence technologies, with the possibility of predicting and choosing part of our own future. Everyday life lived in new virtual contexts has different implications in the forms of social organization and, consequently, in education. Considering this context, we point the value of cultural particularities related to the perception of time. In this subject we theoretically based ourselves on the concepts of Hall (1959), Hall and Hall (1990) and on the adaptations to the educational contexts established by Bluedorn, Kaufman and Lane (1992); Capdeferro, Romero and Barberà (2014); Kaufman, Lane and Lindquist (1991) and Stone and O'Shea (2013, 2019). Regarding students’ relations with digital technologies, we based our study on the metaphors suggested by White and Le Cornu (2011, 2017) about visitor and resident profiles. Finally, concerning to support and integration systems of online distance students in higher education, we take as a starting point the studies by Morgado et al. (2019); Morgado, Afonso and Ferret (2019, 2021); Morgado, Neves and Teixeira (2016); Morgado, Quintas-Mendes and Miranda (2017); Neto, Teixeira and Morgado (2016) and Sánchez-Elvira and González Brignardello (2014). Our research aims to contribute to the construction of a theoretical framework on the online distance students’ time variable, to understand the relations between the students ‘profiles using digital technologies and time management variables in online distance learning contexts, to contribute for the design of support and integration services dedicated to early students in distance learning courses, to identify profiles related to the use of digital technologies among students who are in online distance courses for the first time, to identify time management profiles among students and, finally, to analyse the main difficulties that distance students find in online and academic time management. Exploratory in nature, this research takes the form of a case study, using a mixed methodology. As instruments of data collection, we used documental analysis, narratives, questionnaires and we interviewed online distance students. On data analysis we used content analysis and statistical analysis. Our main conclusions, point to: a) personal development is the first motivation that leads mature students to go to university studies; b) the main reason that leads students to look for a distance university is related to the flexibility of distance model; c) skills in collaborative domain are the lowest among online distance students; d) we observed an intermediate profile between monochronic and polychronic use of time. We have identified that master and doctoral students are more monochronic in using academic time comparing to undergraduate students that are more polychronic; e) we haven’t found a clear evidence or relation between gender and students’ time management neither between the number of children and time management variables. In summary, our results point to the need of re-evaluation of the support existing systems, into online learning context, adjusting them to the real needs of online distance students.
