This essay turns to and through the Philippine vernacular in order to open up the possibility of a new materialist regard of literature, one that specifically stems from the Philippine tropics. It proposes that the opportunity for such a tropical materialism rests on the onomatopoeism observed in the vernacular. Onomatopoeia, as a material linguistic principle, is recognized here to be most instructive in reunderstanding Philippine folk poetry — texts which date back to the precolonial period — in terms beyond mere representation. As a counterpoint to these traditional literary texts, the essay also ruminates on the poetry of Jose Garcia Villa, a prominent Filipino modernist writer, whose works in English are intuited here as demonstrative of the similar onomatopoeism found in Philippine folk poems. Although these literary materials might initially appear to be disparate and disconnected, the reading undertaken here nevertheless seeks to coincide these texts, bringing them into relation to highlight their possible yet understated entanglements, so as to ultimately motivate an intra-activity constitutive of contingent spatiotemporalities that may allow the emergence of a groundwork for a Philippine new materialist poetics.

The poetry sequence “Pornotopia”—in coupling the words “pornography” and “utopia”, a world infused and suffused with desire—is an attempt to respond to the idea of “porno-tropics” where the white conqueror “feminizes the earth as a cosmic breast, in relation to which the epic male hero is a tiny, lost infant, yearning for the Edenic nipple” (McClintock, 1995, p. 22) and connects the “relationship between pornographic fantasies of the tropics and the brutal, often violent facts of conquest” (Balce, 2016, p. 40). “Pornotopia” continues the legacy of literary resistance that uses the linguistic tools of the master to subvert the insatiable lust of the empire, like in the poem “Land of Our Desire” by the Philippine poet Amador T. Daguio (1934/1989, p. 195), whose early works mark “the turning-point in Filipino poetry from, rather than in, English” (Abad, 1993, p. 23). Borrowing lyrical and stylistic tools from the 1984 poem “Sex Without Love” by Sharon Olds (p. 57), “Pornotopia” also explores the topography of voyeurism and the landscape of loveless sex.

The interface of linguistics, literature, and culture was clear in translation. English Studies in Indonesia had undergone revision by the inclusion of postcolonial literature in its curriculum. Literary works from Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Sri Lanka, India and other Asian countries were introduced and translated. Given that language game was central in postcolonial writing, equitable knowledge and grasps of linguistics, literature, and culture were significant in translation. Through the lens of re-placing language as textual strategies in post-colonial writing, this paper explored the application of this reading method and gave practical examples of translating English poems written in, respectively, Singapore and Sri Lankan postcolonial contexts into Indonesian. The discussion showed that in order to preserve the postcolonial strategies of writing back to the colonial ideology, the translation took into account the reconceptualization and reconstruction of people, language, and culture, instead of literal rendering from the source language to the target language. Adoption of postcolonial theory as the translating method shown in this study is important to add to the theory and practice of translation. This trajectory can be used to translate other literary works written in varieties of English into Indonesian, using as they do, different translation strategies to make the translation products accurate, appropriate, and acceptable.

The purpose of this undertaking was to illuminate the literary analysis of poetry as perceived in Mansaka context at Maragusan, Compostela Valley Province. Phenomenological approach was employed to highlight the culture, tradition and practices of the participants. This study aimed to develop and gather deep information through inductive and qualitative method such as interviews and discussions. Further, it involved 14 Mansaka respondents in the Municipality of Maragusan, Compostela Valley Province. Through the employed in- depth interviews and focus group discussion, it was revealed that the poems of Mansaka have different literary features like theme, tone, rhyme scheme, simile, hyperbole, repetitions, assonance, consonance and alliteration and was only limited with these salient features. The findings also revealed that the oral traditions of the elders, educating the young generations and highlighted during rituals played a great role in preserving their poetry. Finally, the different insights of Mansaka tribesmen revealed the importance of positive impact of technology, academic integration, support from the government, roles of young generations in preservation and poetry showcasing tradition. Hence, this study will be resonated in the academe and opens a profound significance on appreciating the literary pieces of Mansaka. Vol. 1 Unanimal, Counterfeit, Scurrilous (Major Work) -- Vol. 2 “expiation,For,the,sin,of,Nothing”: The Politics of Form in Queer Philippine Poetry in English (Exegesis)
My thesis comprises a creative and a critical component. The creative component, Unanimal, Counterfeit, Scurrilous, is a poetry sequence that attends to issues of ageing and desire, in which the human subject is often a riveted but alienated figure. The entries in this major work, many of them prose poems, attempt intimacy and interiority even as their compositional process works against these postures. This process enacts the imbrication of personal concerns, textual realities and lived social conflicts within the sequence. In lightly tracing the narrative and emotive trajectory of its primary source material, Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, the manuscript moves from dignity to disgrace, arc telegraphed by, among other things, the deferred presence of the “I” pronoun and the vacillations in tone and voice. The exegesis, “expiation,For,the,sin,of,Nothing”: The Politics of Form in Queer Philippine Poetry in English, examines how queerness is transmuted into matters of poetic form. Form, in this context, extends to the architectonic features of poetry, the rhetorical strategies used in it and its methodology, with the social and political dimensions of form functioning as the pivot around which my arguments revolve. The introductory chapter situates the critical and creative endeavours of this thesis within the milieu of Philippine literature. In it, I elaborate on the uneasy position of queer writing relative to a hegemonic narrative that foregrounds the antagonisms between New Critical discourse and socially committed literary production. The first chapter contributes to the revaluation of José Garcia Villa (1908-1997). Contrary to his insistence that poetry must remain cloistered from the intrusion of the political, I complicate Villa’s rarefied aestheticist ideals by reading the formally transgressive features of his poems as queer gestures. Villa’s oeuvre has been disparaged by Filipino critics for its seeming universalism and its maintenance of a narcissistic persona; I analyse how these characteristics become legible through José Esteban Muñoz’s propositions on queer futurity. The second chapter examines the poetry of J. Neil Garcia (b. 1969), a key figure in the emergence of Philippine gay literature. I classify the prominent rhetorical and linguistic elements of Garcia’s poems as manifestations of what Christopher Schmidt calls “waste management poetics,” a category of writing marked by its repudiation of literary and social standards of propriety. By referencing contexts pertinent to the circulation and evaluation of his literary output, I argue that the charismatic wastefulness in Garcia’s poetry sidesteps expectations of profitability. In the concluding chapter, I scrutinise the tendency of my poetry manuscript toward queer coding—a praxis of deliberate obscurity—and textual appropriation as a method of composition. This tendency is a literary response to the state-sponsored exertions of violence in the Philippines; it also refracts my compromised status as a Filipino queer writer committed to queer aestheticism while also troubled by the transvaluation of social relevance into capital. In appraising this tendency, I draw from Lauren Berlant’s notion of the impasse, an affective response to the precarious conditions of the present; thus, I frame my manuscript as an anxious and queer performance of abeyance: a response without resolution.
