Goal of the thesis is to show the possibilities of using ordinary hobbyist RC servos and means of their control by a computer. For demonstration of the capabilities of servos, we have created Stewart platform which is using hobbyist servos to position the platform. In the thesis there is explained principle of the inner working of a servo, their properties, abilities and also means of their control by a computer. In practical chapters of the thesis there is documented process of designing and implementing of functional Stewart platform along with specific properties of this platform which influence its design. This platform is also reviewed and based on the results we will show technical properties of the platform, advantages and disadvantages of using ordinary hobbyist servos to control the platform. Design of the platform and its documentation is created with respect to intent to make the ddesign, source codes, documentation available to public on wepages focused on aggregating of instructables and tutorials to make usage of outputs possible in practice.

The subject of this thesis is to map the development of p2p lending in the US. Firstly, we compare the different business models and roles in the current monetary system of commercial banks and p2p platform lenders. The structure as well as trends of p2p lending industry are described. The returns of p2p loans are compared with traditional assets such as bonds, stocks and commodities in the 2011-2016 period. The last part of the thesis examines the loanbook of the most prominent p2p platform lender, Lending Club.

Benchmarking of DSP kernel algorithms was conducted in the thesis on a DSP processor for teaching in the course TESA26 in the department of Electrical Engineering. It includes benchmarking on cycle count and memory usage. The goal of the thesis is to evaluate the quality of a single MAC DSP instruction set and provide suggestions for further improvement in instruction set architecture accordingly. The scope of the thesis is limited to benchmark the processor only based on assembly coding. The quality check of compiler is not included. The method of the benchmarking was proposed by BDTI, Berkeley Design Technology Incorporations, which is the general methodology used in world wide DSP industry.

Proposals on assembly instruction set improvements include the enhancement of FFT and DCT. The cycle cost of the new FFT benchmark based on the proposal was XX% lower, showing that the proposal was right and qualified. Results also show that the proposal promotes the cycle cost score for matrix computing, especially matrix multiplication. The benchmark results were compared with general scores of single MAC DSP processors offered by BDTI.

The theory of this thesis focuses on particulars of multi-sided platform businesses with special emphasis put on early stage start-ups. The goal is to capture crucial findings and fuse them together to point out specifics which apply only for start-ups that are developed in form of multi-sided platform business. This thesis should provide guidance to all entrepreneurs considering such new business formations. It aims at showing them the most important points leading to positive value creation in multi-sided platform businesses. Specifically, it explains the strategic points hidden behind pricing and network effects utilization. At the same time it depicts what are the unnecessary distractions which just destroy attention and consume time and effort. Consequently, these findings are tested on practical example, where real start-up is modelled using this theoretical framework. Such real application points out strong and weak points. Consequently, the optimal framework is derived based on prior findings. The main suggestions point out what should be examined further by the theory and where the research captured enough knowledge.

I detta exjobb har en testplattform skapats för att kunna testa, utvärdera och jämföra olika pumpstyrningar i torr miljö. Testplattformen består av en simulerad pumpstation till vilken befintliga pumpstyrningar av valfri modell kan kopplas, det vill säga ett Hardware-In-the-Loop-system. De främsta fördelarna med en sådan plattform är flexibilitet, snabb feedback samt möjligheten att återskapa exakt samma förutsättningar för olika pumpstyrningar. Testplattformen har implementerats i LabVIEW på en PC som kommunicerar med pumpstyrningshårdvara via ett I/O-kort för analoga och digitala signaler. Det simulerade systemet konfigureras genom val av bland annat pumpar, pumpsump, inflöde och rörsystem. Utifrån de inmatade värdena och styrsignaler från pumpstyrningen simuleras sedan bland annat systemets flöden, energier och temperaturer. Nivån i sumpen, och övriga insignaler till pumpstyrningen, återkopplas från simuleringen. Det finns även möjlighet att påverka systemet genom att applicera exempelvis ett pumphaveri eller en igensättning. Testplattformen har testkörts mot tre olika pumpstyrningshårdvaror. Testkörningarna visar att både simuleringsmodellerna och kommunikationen med styrningen via I/O-kortet fungerar. Konceptet med att testa en pumpstyrningshårdvara mot en mjukvarusimulering är ett snabbt, enkelt och kostnadseffektivt tillvägagångssätt.
In this master thesis a test platform was created to be able to test, evaluate and compare different pump controllers in a dry environment. The platform consists of a simulated pump station to which optional pump controllers can be connected, i.e. a Hardware-In-The-Loop system. The largest benefits from such a platform are flexibility, rapid feedback along with the possibility to recreate the exact same conditions for different pump controllers. The test platform was implemented in LabVIEW on a PC that communicated with the pump control hardware through an I/O-card for analog and digital signals. The system is configured by setting parameters for pumps, sump, inflow, pipe system etc. The flows, energies and temperatures are simulated based on the input values and the control signals from the pump controller. The sump level and other signals needed by the controller are fed back from the simulation. There is also the possibility to affect the system by applying for example a pump failure or a clogging. Three different test runs with different pump controllers were performed. The test runs indicate that both the simulation models and the I/O-communication work. The concept of testing pump control hardware against a software simulation is a rapid, simple and cost efficient procedure.

O fenómeno das plataformas é central para o paradigma socioeconómico atual. Em poucas décadas, o modelo de negócio das plataformas conseguiu alterar fundamentalmente múltiplas indústrias. É um tópico que, embora extensivamente estudado pelos investigadores, ainda produz descobertas. O presente estudo pretende contribuir para esse esforço, explorando o papel das parcerias na internacionalização das plataformas digitais, dos pontos de vista da Gestão Estratégica e de Gestão de Negócios Internacionais. A questão de investigação sobrejacente a este estudo é formulada com base numa revisão de literatura sobre o modelo de negócio das empresas plataforma e o seu processo de internacionalização: Como é que os ecossistemas de plataforma locais são desenvolvidos e estabelecidos? Para responder a esta questão, é desenvolvido um caso de estudo explanatório com base em dois casos altamente contrastantes: a Microsoft Portugal e a Too Good To Go Portugal. Este trabalho descobre que as parcerias podem desenvolver ecossistemas de plataforma e criar oportunidades de negócio em mercados estrangeiros. As plataformas capacitam os seus parceiros com ferramentas e conhecimento por forma a desenvolver e enriquecer ecossistemas. O termo parceiro inclui múltiplas empresas a desempenhar diversos papéis, organizadas de forma hierárquica. As plataformas alavancam parcerias locais e, por vezes, internacionais, aumentando a competitividade local. Ainda assim, parcerias internacionais podem não se traduzir diretamente em parcerias locais. Finalmente, fatores como a credibilidade da empresa plataforma no mercado e o seu alinhamento estratégico com o contexto ético, social e ambiental, podem ter uma influência positiva na sua difusão em mercados e ecossistemas no estrangeiro.
The platform phenomena is central to the contemporary socio-economic paradigm. In a few decades, the platform business model has managed to disrupt and fundamentally change multiple industries. Although this topic is being thoroughly studied by contemporary academia, it still yields discoveries. This research aims to contribute to that effort by exploring the role of partnerships in the internationalization of digital platforms, from the points of view of Strategic Management and International Business. It draws from a literature review on the platform business model and the internationalization process of platform firms to formulate an overarching research question: How are local platform ecosystems established and developed? To answer this question an explanatory case-study based on two highly contrasting cases: Microsoft Portugal and Too Good To Go Portugal is developed. This work finds that partnerships can develop platform ecosystems and create business opportunities in foreign markets. Platform firms invest and empower partners with tools and knowledge. Partner is a catch-all term that includes multiple firms playing diverse roles, organized in hierarchical fashion. Platforms can leverage on local and, sometimes, international partnerships to boost local competitiveness. Yet, international partnerships may not translate directly into local partnerships. Finally, factors such as the market credibility of the platform firm and its strategic attunement to the social, environmental, and ethical context may have a positive influence on platform diffusion in foreign user networks and ecosystems.

This thesis investigates the two gaming platforms PC and Console and how the interfaces of games on these platforms could be designed more efficiently making it easier to release games on multiple platforms. In other words, how could the Multiple Platform First method look. Little previous work exist on this problem so this thesis work gathers information from other industries and also research on user interfaces in games in general. By looking at games running on both platforms different best practises and common solutions were discovered. A study was conducted testing different in-game components on users. The components were selected to test if the users would accept non-traditional components since users detect when playing on an interface not intended for the platform. This makes the study very complicated since the "best" solution might not work if the users does not accept it for the intended platform. Concepts were designed to combine the testing of solutions with the users opinion of the solutions. The chosen concepts were researched both in literature and by looking at present implementations in games. To be able to user test the solutions they were iterated from low fidelity prototypes on paper to high fidelity prototypes that were playable in Unity. The prototypes were tested on users and data gathered through Think Aloud comments and questionnaire answers. This study presents a first draft of how a multiple platform approach can be achieved.

The recent trend of mass customization has redefined the way companies do business. Each individual customer is now their own market, requiring products specific to their wants and needs at mass production prices. This need for ever-increasing variety is a significant challenge for industry that many times leads to ballooning manufacturing costs and lower product performance. One approach that has received widespread attention and implementation is to develop families of products from standardized product platforms. While, many methods have been developed to address different challenges within product platform design, they are not without their limitations/tradeoffs and therefore leave much room for development and improvement. The Product Platform Constructal Theory Method (PPCTM), developed by Dr. Gabriel Hernandez, is a novel approach for developing product platforms that enable customizable products. Rooted in the tenants of hierarchic systems theory and constructal theory, the PPCTM solves for the product platform as a problem of optimization of access in a geometric space. The result is a hierarchical organization of the modes for managing variety and the specification of their commonality across the product platform. Overall, the PPCTM offers an extremely comprehensive product platform design method, with the ability to accommodate multi-platform design, multiple design specifications, non-uniform demand modeling, and multi-objective decision-making. One limitation of this method is that the selection of platform variables and the modes for managing product variety must be pre-specified or determined ad hoc by the designer. This thesis seeks to address this limitation through the integration of a sensitivity-based analysis method to determine the effect of platform variable variation on the family performance. The result of this work is a Sensitivity-based PPCTM that facilitates the selection of common platform variables, such that modes for managing variety can be ranked and applied to the space element hierarchy. The proposed method is illustrated with three examples: the design of a line of customizable pressure vessels, universal electric motors, and finger pumps.

This thesis involves working with an embedded hardware platform based on the Freescale ColdFire v2 core, namely the MCF5208EVB development board. It’s an architecture that allows the use of running a special branch of Linux called uClinux which is specifically tailored to run on systems without a MMU (Memory Management Unit). It brings certain limitations to the system which needs to be taken into consideration when developing applications. On the target platform a measuring application is running which generates data files that are processed and presented using a web server. The data files are generated as XML files and are in the user’s browser combined with an XSLT style sheet to transform the raw data into an easy to use web interface.

The significance of the service platform is increasing, while studies on this phenomenon remain scarce and insufficient. Most of the researches focus on products, market segmentation and how platform triggers innovation and there's a lack of researches that focus on services, the fast growing industry nowadays. In analyzing the service platform, it is important to understand the interactions between different players, such as application developers, content providers, network operators, and users. For that purpose, a value network analysis which analyzes the interactions for creating value between the key players is more suitable than the common value chain analysis which is one-directional and sequential. This thesis adopts the value network approach in an attempt to analyze the two different types of service platform, that is, social networking platform and mobile service platform. The Social Networking Service (SNS) is evolving beyond the bounds of a simple personal network and is gradually transforming into a social networking platform where SNS information is used to develop various new services. This thesis examines the positioning and interaction of the key players for the social networking platform and the values that the key players can gain and capture. The mobile service platform is becoming more important, as 3G mobile technologies are mature and widespread and the smartphone market is growing rapidly. For the mobile service platform, the market players are engaged in a severe competition to control the market through various strategies. The biggest current issue in the mobile market is the movement to open platform strategy to build an ecosystem in which third-party developers can participate. This thesis also examines the positioning and interaction of the key players surrounding the mobile service platform and the values that the key players can gain and capture. Ultimately, this thesis aims to suggest service platform strategies for service platform providers and third party developers from the perspectives of social networking platform and mobile service platform. For that purpose, case studies are conducted in depth. In this thesis, the term "service platform" is defined as a set of interfaces provided for the development of applications or contents as service and software grow into one.

In such an environment, every enterprise must clearly understand its core business strategies, and identify the core competencies needed by its organization to support such strategies. The core competencies of an organization are embodied by every individual employee at different function and position, and need to be systematically planned and developed. While in the past only big companies could afford to build up sophisticated internal training systems, the development of online education technology has made it possible for companies of all sizes to leverage the abundant external resources to meet the companies' training needs, with higher quality and at lower costs. This thesis analyzed the ongoing changes in the macro environment relevant to the enterprise competition, revealed the indication of such changes to the overall corporate training strategies, reviewed the traditional resources for corporate training in China, explored the emerging new resources for corporate training based on online education technology, and in the end discussed the possibility of a new business model for an external vendor to provide integrated customized solutions to the enterprises for their corporate training. The research methodology used for this thesis mainly includes document review and primary market research interview.

In the electronic industrials, power control of AC motors is commonly used. For example power control of a washing machine motor, a vacuum cleaner motor or a coffee machine motor. The company Rejlers Ingenjörer AB has many projects where power control of AC motors is included. A prototype card for this task can save time and money for the company in the future and this is the reason for this thesis. The motors are power controlled by a TRIAC and control of the trigging pulses to the TRIAC. This card is modularly built and can easily be adapted for future projects where the power control of AC motors are included. The prototype card can be used as a subsystem in a larger electronics projects or as it is in lab environment for testing and evaluating new motors.
Inom elektronikbranschen, exempelvis vitvarutillverkare är effektstyrning av ACmotorer vanligt förekommande. Det kan handla om effektstyrning av en diskmaskinsmotor, en dammsugarmotor eller en tvättmaskinsmotor. Företaget Rejlers ingenjörer AB har flera gånger fått uppdrag där effektstyrning av AC-motorer ingått och har behov av ett prototypkort för detta som ska kunna återanvändas i framtida projekt för att spara tid och pengar. Effektstyrningen av motorerna sker med hjälp av en triac och styrning av tändpulserna till denna triac. Detta kort är modulärt uppbyggd så att det enkelt kan anpassas till framtida projekt där effektstyrning av AC-motorer ingår. Prototypkortet kan användas som ett delsystem i ett större elektronikprojekt eller i labbmiljö för test och utvärdering av nya motorer.

Algorithm users, such as researchers, clinicians, engineers, and scientists, want to run advanced, custom, new research algorithms. For example, doctors want to run algorithms developed by researchers for clinical applications. These algorithm users see an algorithm as a black box. They want to input data and get results without having to understand the intricacies of algorithm implementation and without having to download, install, configure, and debug complex software. We refer to these algorithm users as black-box users. Researchers and developers create the algorithms; therefore they understand the algorithms' inner workings. We refer to these algorithm developers as glass-box users. There is a need for a platform or technology that allows algorithm developers to efficiently deploy algorithms. We propose the best way to do this is as a web application. Therefore, there is a need to deploy algorithms as web applications without having to learn web development. We developed a web application that enables algorithm users to run developers' algorithms on data stored locally or in cloud storage services.' To deploy algorithms as web applications, developers upload their algorithms to cloud computing services.2 The developer has the option to create an object native to the language in which the algorithm was developed. The platform turns this object into HTML displayed to the algorithm users, so developers can deploy algorithms as web applications without having to learn web development, which is beneficial, since algorithms are often not developed in web-friendly languages. In addition, our platform allows developers to turn the computers that they developed their algorithms on into cloud computing resources, instead of leveraging existing cloud computing services. Using the developer's computer instead of existing cloud computing services is beneficial because their computers were already configured with the appropriate operating system, installed programs, licensed software, etc. to run the algorithms. We evaluated our design with three in-depth interviews, a twenty-one-person focus group, and a survey of six users, who estimated that our platform would significantly reduce deployment time.

This project explores the possibility to stabilize a hand held serving-tray using a micro-controller, two servomotors and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). It is heavily focused on control theory, specifically using a PID controller. Stabilization of an object using a PID controller have many applications such as drones, camera stabilizers and flight simulators. The report covers the theory necessary to construct a self stabilizing platform and describes involving components in the prototype and how they cooperate. With the gyroscopes and accelerometers involved in the IMU it is possible to determine orientation and rotation of the tray. The construction enables rotation about the x-axis (roll) and y-axis (pitch) but not the z-axis (yaw). The readings from the gyroscopes and the accelerometers are combined and filtered through a complementary filter to estimate the rotations. The servomotors compensate disturbance in keeping the platform horizontal through PID regulation. The PID constants are tuned through tilting the platform at a specific angle and plotting the step response in MATLAB.
Detta projekt utforskar möjligheten att stabilisera en handhållen serveringsbricka med hjälp av en mikrokontroller, två servomotorer och en tröghetssensor (IMU). Projektet lägger mycket fokus på reglerteknik, specifikt att använda en PID-regulator. Stabilisering genom PID-reglering är användbart i många olika produkter, exempelvis drönare, kamerastabiliserare och flygsimulatorer. Rapporten täcker relevant teori för att konstruera en självstabiliserande plattform och beskriver ingående komponenter i prototypen samt hur de samverkar. Med gyroskopen och accelerometrarna som finns i IMU:n är det möjligt att uppskatta position och rotation för ett objekt. Konstruktionen tillåter rotation kring x-axeln (roll) och y-axeln (pitch) men inte zaxeln (yaw). Mätningarna från gyroskopen och accelerometrarna kombineras och filtreras med hjälp av ett s.k. complementary filter för att uppskatta rotationen av objektet. Servomotorerna används i sin tur till att hålla plattan horisontell genom att kompensera störningar från omgivningen. Detta görs genom PID-reglering. Konstanterna i PID-regulatorn är framtagna genom tester där plattformen lutas ett bestämt antal grader och stegsvaret plottas i MATLAB.

Allowing a delegation of sensor management from the sensor providers, to focus on content creation through services. However, this delegation brings new concerns regarding access control. Consequently, this dissertation proposes a possible solution to this problem, enclosed in a service oriented platform interconnected with an ETSI M2M solution. Promoting interoperability between sensors and allowing a great elasticity in service creation.
A Internet das Coisas continua a ser uma área em grande crescimento e de grande interesse. Estão constantemente a surgir novas soluções e inplementações, tanto ao nível dos serviços como ao nível das comunicações Máquina-a-Máquina, promovendo assim o aparecimento de novos modelos de negócio. Desta forma surgiu naturalmente a possibilidade de abstrair a gestão de sensores da criação de serviços. In the last century there have been drastic changes in the way products are developed and manufactured – manufacturing technologies have advanced and at the same time global competition has increased tremendously. For companies to survive, the name of the game has been to offer greater product variety, in more frequent intervals, and for a lower price. Mass production has been replaced by mass customization, where the basic rule is that the customers should get exactly what they want, at the time they want it.

A partial remedy to concurrently lower cost as well as provide customers with a greater number of variants has been to use platforms*. Platforms in the manufacturing industry have at times been highly advantageous while in other instances they have caused more problems than benefit. Platforms exist in different contexts and scope, and it has been found that companies need to improve their platform management skills in order to increase the general level of competitive advantage.

This dissertation proposes that a company can considerably improve the management of its platforms by increasing its holistic understanding of them. To do this, platforms are viewed from different viewpoints that aim to both display the effect a platform has on its surroundings, as well as the effect its surroundings has on it. This approach has been incorporated into a method called the PAMatrix (Platform Assessment Matrix) that uses a synthesis of cross-functional, subjective expert opinion and consensus based decision making.

The PAMatrix method uses already existing implicit and explicit knowledge to improve decision making on how to manage each individual platform. First a set of platforms are identified that the company views as key enablers for creating a competitive advantage. The platforms are then assessed from several different viewpoints – each capturing a partial evaluation of the platforms’ status or effect. After an assessment of a viewpoint, each stakeholder individually suggests a specific strategic action plan along with a weight factor of how important the viewpoint is to the overall assessment of the specific platform. Finally, the discrete action plan suggestions are collected and jointly assessed and debated – based on which, a final strategic action plan can be made.

The method has been tested in three industrial situations, where its use has been considered beneficial and platform understanding has increased.

The Uganda government denied invitation to join Open Government Partnership, that wouldmean a commitment to open development. This leaves non government organizations to take thefirst step to introduce open data to the society and other organizations. The Uganda OpenDevelopment Partnership Platform is an initiative by non government organizations that combinestheir knowledge to promote open development. The development of this platform has just begunand it needs further assistance to be ready for the public. The available data sets and documents onthe platform are released in proprietary formats, without the alternative of open formats. A portalfor open development that releases documents and data sets in proprietary formats alone aresomething that collides in the platform's purpose of being a portal for promoting openness. The purpose of this report is to promote open data with an overview about the subject and explainimprovement proposals on flaws in the Uganda Open Development Partnership Platform. Theinitiatives and organizations that practice open data can get initial guidelines from this report onhow to apply open data. The research should display the current state of the platform to identify theflaws and get an understanding how the platform works. The research was performed throughinterviews that were conducted in Kampala, Uganda, for three weeks in the beginning of 2013. Thisgave the chance to meet numerous citizens of this developing country which offered information ofinterest for the research. Observations were made by visiting the partners of the platform, in order tosee how they work with current means of visualization and to get an understanding of what can beimproved. The Uganda Open Development Partnership Platform can be improved with thepresented proposals to introduce the open license, multiple formats for material and structured datasets.

In mobile computing, there is variety of approaches to develop applications. One challenge is the diversity of mobile devices in the market and targeting more than one mobile device to develop applications. One approach to handle this is traditional, in which for every device there is a project carried out to develop application. Another method is the cross-platform application development which has been introduced in recent years. The purpose of this thesis is to explore if existing cross-platform frameworks can aid startup companies to develop cross-platform mobile apps. The research questions are 1) How can cross-platform frameworks be a viable approach for start-up companies in this respect? 2) What challenges and benefits do cross-platform approaches bring to developers? In order to answer the research questions, respondents from five small-sized and two large companies developing mobile apps are being interviewed. The results shows that cross-platform frameworks are good tools when developing mobile apps for multiple platforms, but are applicable to different degrees depending on the actual case. Challenges and benefits identified by the respondents mainly touched upon decreasing development time, and less coding effort, but also the uniqueness of Apple and Android products and difficulties in making developers switch to new languages.

Movement interaction in games has over the last years been a main subject in the area of game design and recent motion based interaction systems provide many improvements over earlier systems. Research has proven that motion based games provide several benefits over general games, they increase the players’ engagement level and may induce both mental and physical health benefits. Still, not much research has been conducted in the area of motion based platform games, even though the platform game genre is one of the most popular game genres. In this thesis, a case study is conducted in order to extract design principles and guidelines applicable for motion based platform games. The study includes implementation of a browser-based 2D platform game that uses the web camera to provide motion based interaction. One of the conclusions in this study indicates that many game features from ordinary platform games only require minor modifications to be applicable for motion based platform games.

DigiExam är ett Edtech företag med huvudfokus kring digital kunskapskontroll och som utvecklar en plattform för digitala prov. Fördelen med digital kunskapskontroll är att lärare kan minimera den tid det tar att skapa och administrera prov samt att elever får tillgång till verktyg som både kan underlätta och effektivisera deras skrivande. Digitala prov kräver någon form av mjukvara för att vara möjligt. I DigiExams fall så tillhandahölls till en början fyra klienter för fyra möjliga operativsystem för att göra prov. Två utav klienterna var säregna medan de resterande två baserades på samma kodbas. För att minimera utvecklingstiden men även utvecklingskostnaden så valde man att ta fram en så kallad cross platform-klient. Denna klient skulle göra det möjligt att ha stöd för fyra olika operativsystem men basera applikationen på samma kodbas. Arbetet visar att det är fullt möjligt att skapa cross platform-klienter som baseras på webbteknologi och som kan använda operativsystemets fulla potential.  Resultatet blev en applikation som implementerade samma funktionalitet som de tidigare Mac OSX och Windows-klienterna, men som baserades på samma källkod som iPad- och Chromebook-klienterna.
DigiExam is an Edtech company with main focus on digital assessment. The company develops a platform that enables schools to minimize administrative overhead for teachers and enables students to use tools to help and improve their writing during an exam. In order to be able to take a test on a computer or tablet, the student needs to have some kind of software installed for digital exams. DigiExam used to have four clients for four operative systems. Two of the clients were based on the same source code while the other two were unique which made implementation and maintenance of features unnecessarily costly and time consuming. To deal with these issues the company decided to develop a cross platform-client which enables the developers to use one base source code for all clients and operative systems. The cross platform client developed in this dissertation proves that it is possible to create an application based on web technology and that uses the operative systems full potential. This dissertation gives an example how a cross platform client can be developed and resulted in client for Mac OSX and Windows that shares the same base source code as the Chromebook and iOS clients.

The world of mobile phones is currently inhabited by three large rivals. We have Apple with their iOS devices, Microsoft with the Windows Phone line, and various devices with Googles Android operating system. Developing for all platforms individually is labour intensive and time consuming. Therefore cross-platform development is of interest for companies large as small. The technique which gives performance closest to native development is called cross compiling, which compiles native applications from a common codebase. This thesis takes a closer look at the performance of the tool Xamarin Platform, in which applications for iOS, Windows Phone and Android can be created. The performance of Xamarin Platform applications on iOS and Android is native for most user interface components. Network performance is native or better. However computational tasks are very slow compared to natively developed applications. Xamarin PlatformWindows Phone applications are not covered by this thesis.

Cross-platform development frameworks make it possible to develop web applications for multiple platforms with just one code-base. The aim of this thesis is to determine which kind of framework is best suited to bring a web application targeting desktop browsers to the mobile platform. This includes being able to use already developed web components. The evalutation was done by first selecting six frameworks from two different choices of cross-platform technologies. Then a literature study was done to select one framework from each technique for which a prototype for Trimmas application INSIKT was developed .Performance tests of the prototypes together with the literature study is then used to determine which kind of frameworks are to prefer when bringing a web application targeting desktops to the mobile platform. This is done with, in particular, INSIKT but as well for general applicationsin mind. From this we have successfully determined the bes tchoice for INSIKT as well as key points when selecting a framework to use for other applications.

The interactive nature of web applications or “web apps” makes it an excellent medium for conveying complex scientific concepts to lay audiences and creating decision support tools that harness cutting edge modeling techniques. However, the technical expertise required to develop them represents a barrier for would-be developers. The barrier can be characterized by the following hurdles that developers must overcome: (1) identify, select, and install software that meet the spatial and computational capabilities commonly required for water resources modeling; (2) orchestrate the use of multiple FOSS and FOSS4G projects and navigate their differing application programming interfaces (APIs); (3) learn the multi-language programming skills required for modern web development; and (4) develop a web-safe and fully featured web site to host the app. This research has resulted in two primary products that effectively lower the barrier to water resources web app development: (1) a literature review of free and open source software (i.e. software review) and (2) Tethys Platform. The software review included earth science web apps that were published in the peer-reviewed literature in the last decade and it was performed to determine which FOSS4G and FOSS web software has been used to develop such web apps. The review highlights 11 FOSS4G software projects and 9 FOSS projects for web development that were used to develop 45 earth sciences web apps, which constitutes a significantly reduced list of possible software projects that could be used to meet the needs of water resources web app development—greatly lowering the barrier for entry to water resources web development. While the software review addresses the hurdle of identifying FOSS software to provide a web framework and spatial data capabilities for water resources web apps, there are still other hurdles that needed to be overcome to make development more viable. Tethys Platform was developed to address these other hurdles and streamline the development of water resources web apps. It includes (1) a suite of free and open source software that address the unique data and computational needs common to water resources web app development, (2) a Python software development kit for incorporating the functionality of each software element into web apps and streamlining their development, and (3) a customizable web portal that is used to deploy the completed web apps. Tethys Platform has been used to develop a broad array of web apps for water resources modeling and decision support.

In order to maximize operating time of an industrial machine and minimize stand-by time, service time and operating costs, a diagnostic system can be a useful tool. Diagnostic systems employ information already available in a machine’s control system (such as control signals, system state, sensor readings and so forth) to perform intelligent fault detection and localisation, and predict future faults and service needs.

CC Systems develops advanced electronics and control systems for industrial machines and vehicles operating in rough environments. One of their products is a diagnostic platform called Diagnostic Runtime Engine (DRE), supplying the customer with a tool for building a diagnostic system. The platform offers supervision of the control system. Actions are performed when it detects a possible fault or indication of a potential future fault. An action could be for example the creation of an alarm.

The DRE, as designed today, only works together with a control system running in an environment called CoDeSys. In this master thesis a new architecture of the platform is presented, with the objective to make the platform compatible with an arbitrary control system. A prototype is implemented to prove the concept of the suggested architecture model. A number of different standard diagnostic blocks, used for building the diagnostic system, are also suggested with the objective to make it easier for the user to employ the DRE. A proposition of how development with the diagnostic platform can proceed beyond this thesis is also presented.


För att maximera drifttid hos en industriell maskin och minimera driftskostnader samt standby- och service-tid, kan ett diagnostiksystem användas. Ett sådant system använder sig av information som redan finns tillgänglig i maskinens styrsystem (så som styrsignaler, tillstånd, sensorvärden och så vidare) för att utföra feldetektering och fellokalisering samt analys av möjliga framtida feltillstånd och servicebehov.

CC Systems utvecklar avancerade elektronikkomponenter och styrsystem för industriella maskiner och fordon. En av deras produkter är en diagnostikplattform, Diagnostic Runtime Engine (DRE), som erbjuder ett verktyg för att bygga upp ett diagnostiksystem. Plattformen möjliggör övervakning av styrsystemet, och detektion av ett nuvarande feltillstånd eller möjligt framtida feltillstånd leder till att en handling utförs. En handling kan till exempel vara att ett alarm skapas.

Diagnostikplattformen, som den är gjord idag, fungerar bara tillsammans med ett styrsystem som är implementerat i utvecklingsmiljön CoDeSys. I detta examensarbete presenteras en ny arkitektur på plattformen som möjliggör användande tillsammans med ett godtyckligt styrsystem. En prototyp är implementerad för att visa att den föreslagna arkitekturmodellen fungerar i praktiken. Dessutom är ett antal standard-diagnostikblock, som används då ett diagnostiksystem byggs upp, föreslagna. Standardblocken har till syfte att underlätta användandet av diagnostikplattformen. Ett förslag för hur DRE kan byggas om och utvecklas i framtiden är också presenterat.

Mecobo is a prototype interface platform,including a physical interface, hardware for stimuli/measurementsand software, developed at NTNU.The Mecobo platform is intended to serve as a platform forexperimenting with unconventional materials' behavior in a dynamiccomplex system. This project describes the existing Mecoboplatform, modications to it and the new extension Cellular AutomataCentral Processing Unit (CA CPU). With the new extension,Mecobo is now capable of modelling dynamic complexsystems with a cellular automata and an unconventional material.The Cellular Automata Central Processing Unit extension is aparallel processor with 32 cores, but supports up to and including64 cores, for controlling each material conguration pin. Thecore is implemented as a stack machine optimized for instructionspace. It uses an 8-bit reduced instruction set computing (RISC)instruction set architecture (ISA).The modied Mecobo platform is tested and conrmed towork with several cellular automata rules and a simple modelconsisting of a theoretical material with constant response.

FPGA-based prototyping is increasingly used in ASIC developments today to allow hardware/software co-design well ahead of chip fabrication and acceleration of functional verification of ASIC designs and the surrounding system. This thesis addresses an FPGA platform that can be applied in the development of next generation target debugger system. This FPGA platform can also be used for prototyping and verification acceleration of Ericsson ASIC IP:s. Micro Ericsson ASIC (μ-EA) system is implemented in Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA board with the SERDES port that can be tested at 1.25/2.5Gbps. This design costs 62% of FPGA device resources at a frequency of 2.5MHz. The access of Trace Buffer, MEMORY and DSP inside μ-EA proves achievable as well. Moreover, DSP core inside μ-EA is capable of running software and sending out trace messages to debug block, using DebugTool through a Nexus trace probe. This FPGA platform combined with probe and debug tools developed by Ericsson Digital ASIC Unit can be used to verify and validate the next generation debugger systems before ASIC arrives.

The goal with the master thesis was to find a modular diagnostic platform to reuse in future Stoneridge Electronics projects. The master thesis started with Autosar as a consideration and the more we investigated about Autosar, the more drawn we were to it. This has led to the master thesis being devoted to Autosar. Autosar (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) is a standardized automotive software architecture, developed by vehicle manufacturers, third-party suppliers and tool developers. Autosar seems to be a very strong approach for many vehicle manufacturers. All major vehicle manufacturers are today members of Autosar. This thesis presents several ideas on how to migrate an existing architecture to Autosar. It is important to migrate to Autosar in a step by step matter because of numerous reasons. Two reasons are cost to migrate to Autosar and reliability issues. One of the goals of this master thesis was to develop one of many Autosar software components also called basic software modules in C. The basic software module written is the Can Transport Protocol, which is a part of the diagnostic platform. Programming the whole Can Transport Protocol is a large assignment and beyond the scope of a master thesis for one person. The programming part was split into two parts. According to Autosar, the Can TP used in the Autosar architecture is ISO 15765-2 USDT. This standard is used in many projects at Stoneridge Electronics. This master thesis also presents advantages and disadvantages of Autosar for Stoneridge Electronics. The conclusion is to be prepared for Autosar for numerous reasons. The major reason is the car manufacturer’s strong Autosar approach. Autosar is today well accepted by the major car manufacturers. There are however a few disadvantages with Autosar for Stoneridge Electronics and they are: • Cost to migrate to Autosar • Autosar requires more resources • Autosar has not yet considered the truck and bus industry.
Målet med detta examensarbete var att finna en modulär diagnostikplattform för smidig återanvändning i framtida Stoneridge Electronics projekt. Examensarbetet startade med Autosar som en alternativ lösning men blev snabbt lösningen på examensarbetet. Ju mer vi undersökte Autosar desto mer dragna till det blev vi. Detta har lett till att examensarbetet har blivit helt tillägnat åt Autosar. Autosar (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) är en standardiserad automobil mjukvaruarkitektur, utvecklad av biltillverkare, underleverantörer och verktygsutvecklare. Autosar verkar ha en väldigt stark frammarsch bland biltillverkare samt underleverantörer. Alla större biltillverkare är idag, i någon form, medlemmar i Autosar. Flera idéer presenteras hur man bör, på ett smidigt sätt, övergå till Autosar. Det är viktigt att man övergår till Autosar i en steg för steg process. Två anledningar är kostnaden att övergå till Autosar samt säkerhets frågor. Ett av många mål med examensarbetet var dessutom att utveckla en av många Autosar mjukvarukomponenter, så kallade ”basic software modules” i programmeringsspråk C. Mjukvarukomponenten som utvecklades var ”Can Transport Protocol” som är en del av diagnostikplattformen. Att programmera hela komponenten krävde att examensarbetet delades upp i två delar. Enligt Autosar är Autosars ”Can TP” baserad på ISO 15765-2 (USDT). Denna standard (USDT) är idag mycket väl accepterad hos Stoneridge Electronics och återanvänds flitigt i många Stoneridge Electronics projekt. Detta examensarbete presenterar fördelar och nackdelar med Autosar för Stoneridge Electronics. Slutsatsen är att vara förberedd med Autosar p.g.a. ett flertal anledningar. Den största anledningen är Autosars starka frammarsch bland biltillverkare och leverantörer. Autosar är idag väldigt accepterad bland de större biltillverkarna. Det finns dessvärre ett flertal negativa aspekter med Autosar för Stoneridge Electronics och dessa är: • Kostnaden att övergå till Autosar. • Autosar kräver mer resurser. • Autosar har ännu inte funderat på buss- och lastbilsindustrin.

The objective of this research was to develop the initial constituents of a highly scalable and label-free electronic biosensing platform. Current immunoassays are becoming increasingly incapable of taking advantage of the latest advances in disease biomarker identification, hindering their utility in the potential early-stage diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. This is due primarily to their inability to simultaneously detect large numbers of biomarkers. The platform presented here - termed the electronic microplate - embodies a number of qualities necessary for clinical and laboratory relevance as a next-generation biosensing tool. Silicon nanowire (SiNW) sensors were fabricated using a purely top-down process based on those used for non-planar integrated circuits on silicon-on-insulator wafers and characterized in both dry and in biologically relevant ambients. Canonical pH measurements validated the sensing capabilities of the initial SiNW test devices. A low density SiNW array with fluidic wells constituting isolated sensing sites was fabricated using this process and used to differentiate between both cancerous and healthy cells and to capture superparamagnetic particles from solution. Through-silicon vias were then incorporated to create a high density sensor array, which was also characterized in both dry and phosphate buffered saline ambients. The result is the foundation for a platform incorporating versatile label-free detection, high sensor densities, and a separation of the sensing and electronics layers. The electronic microplate described in this work is envisioned as the heart of a next-generation biosensing platform compatible with conventional clinical and laboratory workflows and one capable of fostering the realization of personalized medicine.

Code obfuscation is a technique used to make soft- ware more difficult to read and reverse engineer. It is used in the industry to protect proprietary algo- rithms and to protect the software from unintended use. The current state of the art solutions in the in- dustry depend on specific platform targets. In this report we look at code obfuscation from a platform independent point of view. The result is a survey of code obfuscation methods that can be used together to perform platform independent code obfuscation. We also analyze some of these methods in more de- tail and provide insights regarding their potency (dif- ficulty to deobfuscate manually), resilience (difficulty to deobfuscate automatically), stealth (difficulty to distinguish from normal code) and ease of integra- tion (how easily the method can be integrated and used in a toolchain).
Kodobfuskering är ett verktyg för att göra mjukvara svårare att läsa, förstå och bakåtkompilera. Det an- vänds inom industrin för att skydda proprietära algo- ritmer samt för att skydda program och tjänster från att missbrukas. This thesis was made for Cybercom in Ostersund. They wanted an evaluation of HTML5 cross platform applications which studied HTML5 features as well as JavaScript libraries and frameworks. The resources put into mobile application development can be reduced bymaking applications that can work on all platforms instead of only natively. These types ofapplications are called cross platform applications and can be developed with specic tools.One way to develop cross platform applications is by using HTML5, which can either beused as a web application or packed into native applications using plug-ins. The purpose ofthis thesis was to create a mobile web app that can save maps to be used oine. The workwas done by evaluating frameworks for web applications. Frameworks that provide userinterface elements and features similar to those in native applications, and libraries that render maps served by map servers. Development environments for web development were also tested and evaluated. The results of the research and development were documented experience, and a HTML5 application that shows a map, has GPS functionality and can beused oine.

In Automotive Industries, to be confident regarding the success of a planned operation, performing accurate methods in order to detect abnormal operating conditions, known as faults, is crucial. An effective method for diagnosis and fault recognition ensures the safety of the operation, reduces manufacturing cost and any other potential impacts. In addition, mobile solutions have been widely adopted among automotive manufactures during recent years and they have taken full advantage of mobile strategies. Accordingly, it is necessary for there to be a future-proof plan to control the diagnostic operations in advance. In this thesis, the immediate objective has been to offer a future-proof and user-friendly solution to assist engineers and service technicians in the monitoring, detecting, and diagnosing of faults on Toyota/BT/CESAB branded trucks. A mobile cross-platform framework is used to develop the diagnostic mobile solution which is not only able to be deployed on Android and iOS mobile platforms, but also provides wireless communication between truck machines and mobile devices through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi ad hoc technologies. The diagnostic mobile tool is capable of processing real-time controller area network messages and visualizing the condition of different sensors in a more user-friendly way through rich hybrid and client-side web user interfaces. The experience of evaluating a cross-platform diagnostic tool on different mobile operating systems proved that cross-platform mobile development methodology can be a reliable technique for developing projects that essentially require real-time data processing. In addition, it indicates that Apple iOS offers a better runtime performance than Google Android for the current tool.

The field of evolution in materio is a branch of unconventional computing that uses artificial evolution to manipulate materials so that the emergent properties can be used for computation. Some materials may have very complex properties and this could be utilized to do computation faster and/or more energy efficient than today's computers. The purpose of this master's thesis is to extend an already existing prototype system, called Mecobo, that is used for evolution in materio. The prototype system is currently only able to apply digital signals to the materials, i.e. high and low voltage, but with this new extension it will also be able to apply an arbitrary waveform in addition to reading the response from the materials. The main components of the extension are digital-to-analog converters that together with an FPGA functions as a frequency synthesizer. An analog-to-digital converter is also used for sampling the responsesignal. Some initial experiments are presented, where the linearity/nonlinearity of the response signal is investigated when analog signals are applied to carbon nanotubes. The results shows that carbon nanotubes are able to influence thesignals, as they pass through it.

Infrared spectrum, especially mid-infrared range (2.512tm) covers the absorption peaks of many important chemicals including carbon monoxide, methane and water vapor. By analyzing the absorption spectrum of achemical, one can measure the concentration of the chemicals as well as distinguish the chemical species. The purpose of this work is to build a Si CMOS compatible integrated mid-infrared (MIR) platform for sensing. In this work, we evaluated the three major components (materials and devices) comprising an integrated mid-infrared (MIR) sensing platform: the light source, the waveguide sensor and the detector. To build an integrated MIR light source, we evaluated three approaches. 1) Germanium light source, which is the representative of the CMOS compatible semiconductor light source. By applying tensile strain as well as increasing doping and injection level, Ge is tuned to pseudo-direct or direct bandgap structure and the emission wavelength extends to MIR range. 2) Er-doped GaLaS (GLS) platform which is the representative of the rare earth doped material system. A new laser structure is designed for this system with a threshold power of 7.6 ptW and a slope efficiency of 10.26%. 3) Frequency comb generation which is a new area using nonlinearity to generate new frequencies. Thick Si3N4 material for comb structures are designed, fabricated and tested. In the waveguide sensor section, a waveguide structure based on chalcogenide glass (ChG) is built and tested. The sensing limit for methane reaches 2.5 vol. %. Besides, a ChG based small-footprint plasmonic optical switch is designed to work as an optical router for integrated spectrometer applications with a small (167 nm long) footprint. In the last part, a MIR PbTe based integrated detector has been successfully demonstrated for the first time. A further improvement in the material property and device structure yields a responsivity is about 1.4 A/W in the MIR regime.

The use of accelerometers and gyroscopes has greatly increased in recent years, different applications of these are seen in everything from smartphones to mo-torcycles. The stabilizing mechanisms used for cameras may however be more well-known. Irrespective of purpose, motorized stabilizing mechanisms com-monly utilize an inertial measurement unit to determine real-time position and movement. This position is then analysed and an action is chosen. To improve performance, control science is often applied. The purpose of this report is to analyze how a common PID controller will react to variations in load. This report will describe the construction and development of a self-stabilizing platform, controlled by two PID controllers, based on the Arduino platform. Theory behind the included components is presented and the methods of modeling, construction and testing is discussed. An IMU consisting of three accelerometers and three gyroscopes is used to measure the tilt of the platform, a Kalman filter is then used to suppress the signal noise to reasonable levels. This was successfully achieved using Open- source code from the Arduino community. Two DC-motors adjust the angle of the platform, one for each axis, with a PID controller each. The system was modelled for each motor to determine the PID controller parameters that would satisfy the requirements set regard-ing speed and precision. A fast system was prioritized to assure small angles and reduce the torque on the motor shafts. This resulted in a system with roughly 0.1 seconds of rise time, 1.3 seconds settling time and 18% overshoot at a 10° step. By conducting step response tests using the demonstrator, the research ques-tion could be answered. It was found that a PID controller tuned for a specific system will have a performance drop but not become unstable when load is varied, up to the level of load that causes too large amounts of torque for the motors to counter.
Själv-stabiliserande plattform Användningen av accelerometrar och gyroskop har ökat de senaste åren, olika tillämpningar finns i allt från smarta telefoner till motorcyklar. Däremot är till exempel stabiliseringsmekanismen använd till kameror bättre känd. Oavsett syfte är det vanligt att motoriserade stabiliseringsmekanismer använder en tröghetsmätningsenhet, bättre känd som en IMU, för att avgöra position och rörelse i realtid. Denna position är sedan analyserad och en handling väljs. För att förbättra prestanda appliceras ofta reglerteknik på systemet. Syftet med denna rapport är att undersöka hur en normal PID-regulator kommer att reagera vid variationer i belastning. Rapporten beskriver konstruktionen och utvecklingen av en själv-stabiliserande plattform, styrd av två PID-regulatorer, baserad på Arduino-plattformen. Bakomliggande teori kring komponenterna presenteras och metoder för modellering, konstruktion och testning diskuteras. En IMU bestående av tre accelerometrar och tre gyroskop används för att mäta plattformens lutning, ett Kalman-filter dämpar sedan bruset i signalen till godtagbara nivåer. Detta åstadkoms med hjälp av kod från Open-source källor från Arduino-communityt. Två DC-motorer justerar vinkeln på plattformen, en för var axel, med en PID-regulator var. Systemet modellerades för vardera av motorerna, för att bestämma parametrar för PID-regulatorerna som kunde uppfylla de satta kraven på hastighet och precision. In order to find a suitable platform for scheduling in a family context and to value time and human connection, this project was done in collaboration with Anima company.The main idea of this research was helping family members to improve their relations by sharing their plans, task, and their schedules; so, they can manage to spend more time together. Furthermore, this research will attempt to define the main elements of a family calendar.The user-centered and Co-design method was employed to gain users’ needs and leading the research to the primary design outcome which was an app, with family and personal use. Plus, additional options were suggested based on users' requirements and the company assignment, to build the concept closer to home usage and make scheduling easier for family members.

The blackboard and whiteboard are common in schools globally. Many of them have interesting magnetic properties, which is not largely used. In this thesis, a study is conducted in which the possibility of navigating along a whiteboard, using its magnetic property, is examined. A robot was manufactured and tested to see the possibilities of operating a robot with multiple functions on the board. By utilizing an accelerometer and a distance sensor, the robot was capable of navigating the board without the risk of falling of. The completed robot has an integrated controller which allows adjustments to any desired angle and detection of the edge of the board.
Svarta tavlan och whiteboard är vanligt förekommande i skolor over hela världen. Många av dem har den intressanta egenskapen att vara magnetisk, vilket inte utnyttjas i någon större grad. I den här avhandlingen gjordes en studie i att navigera med en robot på en tavla genom att utnyttja dess magnetiska egenskap. En robot tillverkades och testades för att se möjligheterna av att ha en Robot som skulle kunna utföra många olika uppgifter på tavlan. Genom utnyttjandet av en accelerometer och en distanssensor kunde roboten navigera på tavlan utan att riskera att trilla av. Den färdiga roboten har ett implementerat styrsystem för att kunna justera sig in till olika vinklar och även detektera kanten av tavlan.
