The total internal reflection ellipsometry method was used to analyse the angular spectra of the hybrid Tamm and surface plasmon modes and to compare their results with those obtained using the conventional single SPR method. As such type of measurement is quite common in commercial SPR devices, more detailed attention was paid to the analysis of the p-polarization reflection intensity dependence. The conducted study showed that the presence of strong coupling in the hybrid plasmonic modes increases the sensitivity of the plasmonic-based sensors due to the reduced losses in the metal layer. The experimental results and analysis of the optical responses of three different plasmonic-based samples indicated that the optimized Tamm plasmons ΔRp(TP) and optimized surface plasmons ΔRp(SP) samples produce a response that is about five and six times greater than the conventional surface plasmon resonance ΔRp(SPR) in angular spectra. The sensitivity of the refractive index unit of the spectroscopic measurements for the optimized Tamm plasmon samples was 1.5 times higher than for conventional SPR, while for wavelength scanning, the SPR overcame the optimized TP by 1.5 times.

AbstractWe demonstrate experimentally that Tamm plasmons in the near infrared can be supported by a dielectric mirror interfaced with a metasurface, a discontinuous thin metal film periodically patterned on the sub-wavelength scale. More crucially, not only do Tamm plasmons survive the nanopatterning of the metal film but they also become sensitive to external perturbations as a result. In particular, by depositing a nematic liquid crystal on the outer side of the metasurface, we were able to red shift the spectral position of Tamm plasmon by 35 nm, while electrical switching of the liquid crystal enabled us to tune the wavelength of this notoriously inert excitation within a 10-nm range.

The anodic TiO2 photonic crystals evoke great interest for application as photocatalytic media due to high absorption of light resuling from their specific structure. In this work, the optical properties of the photonic crystal based on a bamboo-type TiO2 nanotube with a metallic coating are analyzed theoretically by the finite-difference time-domain method. The occurrence of Tamm plasmons that appears as a peak in the absorption spectrum is predicted. A Tamm plasmon polariton is a localized state of light excited at the boundary of two highly reflective media, a metal and a Bragg reflector. The integral absorption of the gold-, titanium-, and titanium nitride-coated photonic crystals in the wavelength range of 450–600 nm is calculated. It is established that the titanium nitride-coated structure exhibits the maximum integral absorption.

We investigate the concept of slab Tamm plasmons (STP) in regard to their properties as resonant absorber or emitter structures in the mid-infrared spectral region. In particular, we compare the selective absorption characteristics resulting from different choices of absorbing material, namely Ag, W, Mo or highly doped Si. We devised a simplified optimization procedure using finite element simulations for the calculation of the absorption together with the application of micro-genetic algorithm (GA) optimization. As characteristic for plasmonic structures, the specific choice of the metallic absorber material strongly determines the achievable quality factor (Q). We show that STP absorbers are able to mitigate the degradation of Q for less reflective metals or even non-metals such as doped silicon as plasmonic absorber material. Moreover, our results strongly indicate that the maximum achievable plasmon-enhanced absorption does not depend on the choice of the plasmonic material presuming an optimized configuration is obtained via the GA process. As a result, absorptances in the order of 50–80% could be achieved for any absorber material depending on the slab thickness (up to 1.1 µm) and a target resonance wavelength of 4.26 µm (CO2 absorption line). The proposed structures are compatible with modern semiconductor mass fabrication processes. At the same time, the optimization procedure allows us to choose the best plasmonic material for the corresponding application of the STP structure. Therefore, we believe that our results represent crucial advances towards corresponding integrated resonant absorber and thermal emitter components.

In this work, we propose and evaluate a concept for a selective thermal emitter based on Tamm plasmons suitable for monolithic on-chip integration and fabrication by conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible processes. The original design of Tamm plasmon structures features a purely one-dimensional array of layers including a Bragg mirror and a metal. The resonant field enhancement next to the metal interface corresponding to optical Tamm states leads to resonant emission at the target wavelength, which depends on the lateral dimensions of the bandgap structure. We demonstrate the application of this concept to a silicon slab structure instead of deploying extended one dimensional layers thus enabling coupling into slab waveguides. Here we focus on the mid-infrared region for absorption sensing applications, particularly on the CO2 absorption line at 4.26 µm as an example. The proposed genetic-algorithm optimization process utilizing the finite-element method and the transfer-matrix method reveals resonant absorption in case of incident modes guided by the slab and, by Kirchhoff’s law, corresponds to emittance up to 90% depending on different choices of the silicon slab height when the structure is used as a thermal emitter. Although we focus on the application as an emitter in the present work, the structure can also be operated as an absorber providing adjusted lateral dimensions and/or exchanged materials (e.g., a different choice for metal).

Abstract Hot-electron photodetectors (HE PDs) are attracting a great deal of attention from plasmonic community. Many efficient HE PDs with various plasmonic nanostructures have been demonstrated, but their preparations usually rely on complicated and costly fabrication techniques. Planar HE PDs are viewed as potential candidates of cost-effective and large-area applications, but they likely fail in the simultaneous achievement of outstanding optical absorption and hot-electron collection. To reconcile the contradiction between optical and electrical requirements, herein, we propose a planar HE PD based on optical Tamm plasmons (TPs) consisted of an ultrathin gold film (10 nm) sandwiched between two distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). Simulated results show that strong optical absorption (>0.95) in the ultrathin Au film is realized. Electrical calculations show that the predicted peak photo-responsivity of proposed HE PD with double DBRs is over two times larger than that of conventional single-DBR HE PD. Moreover, the planar dual-DBR HE PDs exhibit a narrowband photodetection functionality and sustained performance under oblique incidences. The optical nature associated with TP resonance is elaborated.

This article provides a brief overview of the research on localized optical states called Tamm plasmons (TPs) and their potential applications, which have been extensively studied in recent decades. These states arise under the influence of incident light at the interface between a metal film and a medium with the properties of a Bragg mirror, or between two media with the properties of a Bragg mirror. The localization of the states in the interfacial region is a consequence of the negative dielectric constant of the metal and the presence of a photonic band gap of the Bragg reflector. Optically, TPs appear as resonant reflection dips or peaks in the transmission and absorption spectra in the region corresponding to the photonic band gap. The relative simplicity of creating a Tamm structure and the significant sensitivity of TPs to its parameters make them attractive for applications. The formation of broadband and tunable TP modes in hybrid structures containing, in particular, rugate filters and porous distributed Bragg reflectors are considered. Considerable attention is paid to TP designs that include liquid crystals, which allow for the remote tuning of the TP spectrum without the mechanical restructuring of the system. The application of TPs in sensors, thermal emitters, absorbers, laser generation, and the experimental capabilities of TP-liquid crystal devices are also discussed.

An electrode of a light-induced cell for water splitting based on a broadband Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a thin TiN layer and a chirped photonic crystal has been developed. To facilitate the injection of hot electrons from the metal layer by decreasing the Schottky barrier, a thin n-Si film is embedded between the metal layer and multilayer mirror. The chipping of a multilayer mirror provides a large band gap and, as a result, leads to an increase in the integral absorption from 52 to 60 percent in the wavelength range from 700 to 1400 nm. It was shown that the photoresponsivity of the device is 32.1 mA/W, and solar to hydrogen efficiency is 3.95%.

In this work, a high-sensitivity terahertz (THz) biosensor is achieved by using a graphene/Bragg reflector hybrid structure. This high-sensitivity THz biosensor is developed from the sharp Fano resonance transmission peak created by coupling the graphene Tamm plasmons (GTPs) mode to a defect mode. It is found that the proposed THz biosensor is highly sensitive to the Fermi energy of graphene, as well as the thickness and refractive index of the sensing medium. Through specific parameter settings, the composite structure can achieve both a liquid biosensor and a gas biosensor. For the liquid biosensor, the maximum sensitivity of > 1000 °/RIU is obtained by selecting appropriate parameters. We believe the proposed layered hybrid structure has the potential to fabricate graphene-based high-sensitivity biosensors.

Generally, the responsivities of hot-electron photodetectors (HE PDs) are mainly dependent on the device working wavelengths. Therefore, a common approach to altering device responsivities is to change the working wavelengths. Another strategy for manipulating electrical performances of HE PDs is to harness electric bias that can be used to regulate hot-electron harvesting at specified working wavelengths. However, the reliance on bias hampers the flexibility in device operations. In this study, we propose a purely planar design of HE PDs that contains the phase-change material Sb2S3, realizing reversibly alterable hot-electron photodetection without altering the working wavelengths. Optical simulations show that the designed device exhibits strong absorptance (>0.95) at the identical resonance wavelengths due to the excitations of Tamm plasmons (TPs), regardless of Sb2S3 phases. Detailed electrical calculations demonstrate that, by inducing Sb2S3 transitions between crystalline and amorphous phases back and forth, the device responsivities at TP wavelengths can be reversibly altered between 59.9 nA/mW to 128.7 nA/mW. Moreover, when device structural parameters are variable and biases are involved, the reversibly alterable hot-electron photodetection at specified TP wavelengths is maintained.

In this work, we present high-performance surface plasmonic sensors using gold nanostructures and Bragg photonic structures. The gold film on the Bragg structure provides Tamm plasmon states (TPs). The Fano coupling between higher order TPs and Bloch-wave surface plasmon polariton (BW-SPP) on the gold nanoslit array results in a new hybrid Tamm-plasmon mode. Using finite-difference time-domain calculations, we demonstrate that the hybrid mode has the advantages of high surface sensitivity of BW-SPP mode and high resonant quality of Tamm state. The calculated plasmonic field distribution shows that the hybrid mode has a similar evanescent distribution with BW-SPP mode on gold surface and TPs field in the Bragg structure. The experimental results verify that the hybrid mode has one hundred times higher wavelength sensitivity than the Tamm state. The figure of merit of the hybrid mode is five times better than the BW-SPP mode in conventional nanoslit arrays. The real-time sensorgram further confirms that the hybrid mode has a much higher sensitivity and better signal to noise ratios in the biomolecular interaction measurement.

In this study, we demonstrate the potential capability to control Tamm plasmon-polaritons (TPP) by applying atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a highly precise technique for plasmonic applications. Applications in plasmonics usually require tens of nanometers or less thick layers; thus, ALD is a very suitable technique with monolayer-by-monolayer growth of angstrom resolution. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and polarized reflection intensity identified the TPP resonances in the photonic band gap (PBG) formed by periodically alternating silicon oxide and tantalum oxide layers. The sub-nanometer control of the Al2O3 layer by ALD allows precise tailoring of TPP resonances within a few nanometers of spectral shift. The employing of the ALD method for the fabrication of thin layers with sub-nanometer thickness accuracy in more complex structures proves to be a versatile platform for practical applications where tunable plasmonic resonances of high quality are required.

Low-cost 1D plasmonic photonic structures supporting Tamm plasmon polaritons and cavity modes were employed for optical signal enhancement, modifying the commercially available quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) sensor chip in a combinatorial spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz microbalance method. The Tamm plasmon optical state and cavity mode (CM) for the modified mQCM-D sample obtained sensitivity of ellipsometric parameters to RIU of ΨTPP = 126.78 RIU−1 and ΔTPP = 325 RIU−1, and ΨCM = 264 RIU−1 and ΔCM = 645 RIU−1, respectively. This study shows that Tamm plasmon and cavity modes exhibit about 23 and 49 times better performance of ellipsometric parameters, respectively, for refractive index sensing than standard spectroscopic ellipsometry on a QCM-D sensor chip. It should be noted that for the optical biosensing signal readout, the sensitivity of Tamm plasmon polaritons and cavity modes are comparable with and higher than the standard QCM-D sensor chip. The different origin of Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPP) and cavity mode (CM) provides further advances and can determine whether the surface (TPP) or bulk process (CM) is dominating. The dispersion relation feature of TPP, namely the direct excitation without an additional coupler, allows the possibility to enhance the optical signal on the sensing surface. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study and application of the TPP and CM in the combinatorial SE-QCM-D method for the enhanced readout of ellipsometric parameters.

In this study, the sensitivity to the refractive index changes of the ambient was studied on the uniform gold film (~50 nm) with a 1D photonic crystal (PC) from periodic five TiO2 (~110 nm)/SiO2 (~200 nm) bilayers and gold nano-bumps array produced by direct laser writing on the same sample. The optical signal sensitivity of hybrid plasmonic resonances was compared with traditional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on a single gold layer. The influence of the strong coupling regime between Tamm plasmon polariton (TPP) and propagated plasmon polaritons in the hybrid plasmonic modes on the sensitivity of the optical was discussed. Recent studies have shown very high hybrid plasmonic mode sensitivity SHSPP ≈ 26,000 nm/RIU to the refractive index on the uniform gold layer; meanwhile, the introduction of gold lattice reduces the signal sensitivity, but increases the Q-factor of the plasmonic resonances. Despite this, the sensitivity to the ellipsometric parameters Ψ and Δ on the gold lattice was rather high due to the increased Q-factor of the resonances. The comparison of plasmonic resonance sensitivity to the refractive index changes of hybrid TPP-SPP mode on the uniform gold layer and traditional SPR have shown that hybrid plasmonic mode, due to a strong coupling effect, overcomes the SPR by about 27%.

Orbital angular momentum of light is a core feature in photonics. Its confinement to surfaces using plasmonics has unlocked many phenomena and potential applications. Here, we introduce the reflection from structural boundaries as a new degree of freedom to generate and control plasmonic orbital angular momentum. We experimentally demonstrate plasmonic vortex cavities, generating a succession of vortex pulses with increasing topological charge as a function of time. We track the spatiotemporal dynamics of these angularly decelerating plasmon pulse train within the cavities for over 300 femtoseconds using time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy, showing that the angular momentum grows by multiples of the chiral order of the cavity. The introduction of this degree of freedom to tame orbital angular momentum delivered by plasmonic vortices could miniaturize pump probe–like quantum initialization schemes, increase the torque exerted by plasmonic tweezers, and potentially achieve vortex lattice cavities with dynamically evolving topology.

We presented the results of studying the features of various resonant modes excitation in a spatially non-homogeneous magnetophotonic crystal with a plasmonic coating. It has been shown that in a such crystal several resonant Fabry-Perot modes and the Tamm plasmon mode are generated at once, which undergo a spectral shift inside the photonic bandgap when the thicknesses of the optical and magnetic layers of magnetophotonic crystal is change.

Two schemes of excitation of a Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity have been investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory. The parameters of the structure have been determined, which correspond to the critical coupling of the incident field with a Tamm plasmon polariton and, consequently, ensure the total absorption of the incident radiation by the structure. It has been established that the spectral width of the absorption line depends on the scheme of Tamm plasmon polariton excitation and the parameters of a nanocomposite film. The features of field localization at the Tamm plasmon polariton frequency for different excitation schemes have been examined. It has been demonstrated that such media can be used as narrowband absorbers based on Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity.
