The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 has been awarded to Al Gore and IPCC for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change. The "Grenelle de l'environnement" in France shows this new granted concern for governments. With the enlarging necessity to counteract climatic risk, governments can be however tried to escape from their environmental obligations. They can use emission tax or the tradable emission permits to support their national industry against international competition. The thesis is organized in two parts. The first part is a survey of the literature. Chapter 1 presents the strategic trade policy and chapter 2 includes its environmental dimension (chapter 2). The second part examines theoretical contributions and is organized as follows. Ln chapter 3, we analyze the impact of polluting firms' lobbying on strategic environmental policy with emission taxes. A market of tradable emission permits and a possibility (or not) of a market power for one firm on this market are discussed in chapter 4

Pełny tekst źródłaLocated at the centre of a three-fold concept, cooperation - trust - oppportunist behaviours, law is a hazardous factor but is a source of competitive advantages too for entreprises. Companies can't do without law but must rather manage it. Thus a new function has emerged: the judicial function. The antagonistic yet complementary coexistence of law as goods and law as institutions, the growing number of organizations that give birth to new legislations and the relations between legal actors and companies allow these companies more leeway when they have to deal with law matters but all this also makes their judicial environment even more complexe, makes their understanding more difficult and even more indispensable. Indeedas the judicial world appears more and more blurred and as the judicial hazards weigh more strongly on companies, companies are led to organize their own judicial function. The growing concern of managers for judicial hazards has influenced their approach of this function from an operational level to a strategic level according to three main strategies: - the defensive strategy which aims at avoiding conflicts. A company foreseeing trouble tackles it by resorting to alternative resolution or acts on its judicial environment thanks to lobbying. - the offensive strategy which resorts to law or judicial disputes to maintain or to contest rules that enable this company to keep the leading position on a market or to communicate. - the planned strategy which allows a company to adapt to its judicial environment by setting up judicial awareness. Then the judicial function becomes a system combining all the existing strategies: prevention, resolution and opportunistic behaviour

The environmental uncertainty has no direct impact on the performance, but positively moderate the relationship between strategic behavior and performance. However, the role of cultural variables is more contrasted. Some have both a direct effect on the strategic behavior variables and also play the role of moderating variables of the relationship between the strategic behavior and performance. Others are both a direct effect on performance, as they moderate the relationship between strategic behavior and performance. Results by country show no significant relationship between strategic behavior and performance. The country is not a moderator, but has a significant direct effect on performance. At the managerial and theoretical levels implications are numerous

Logistics processes are changing thank to ICT, we have a substitution of manual tasks by computing tasks. Our objective was to develop by using ICT, a process of tactical logistics planning in manufacturing of ceramic sanitary ware. Our research relied on interviews, direct observations, simulation, and construction methods. Analysis of technological innovations possibilities allowed to include the ERP during the methodology construction. The objective is to facilitate the assimilation of these technologies to achieve a match between computerized system and business processes and thus to develop success factors. At the end, it was not only a new method of planning, but also a study of impacts of ICT on the tactical planning process. The method is an iterative process between the field and theories. But it seems that the essence is in the succeeding generation methods. Common points exist between each method, with ICT integration growing. This is not reproducible method itself but the degree of assimilation of ICT

It has been a strategic choice for organizations to deal with the uncertainties of their external environment. It is also set for facing human constraints and problems of employee integration so that the organizations can maintain and promote the motivation and performance of their employees. It seems that these two approaches of organizational redesign, when employed separately, are not able to meet the actually increasing number of questions emanating from this process. This is because each approach is only conceptualized for a unique context. This thesis proposes an integrated approach for organizational redesign responding to both external and internal needs of the organizations. The conceptual model is built based on the relationships among four main variables: institutional environment, organizational redesign, motivation, and human performance. It employs the research methodologies of case study (5 cases) and of survey method (157 usable responses) on 40 Vietnamese state-owned enterprises for the test of the research model

This perspective allows to promote transformation within organizations with an autonomous theoretical approach, of socio-economic essence, in break with a comprehension of transformation as a form of change. Transformation est an endogenous and immanent socio-economic process. His process takes place in the facilities of the organization. It makes happen the change, all forms of which he inserts. Since then, the success of change, and more broadly any strategical or organizational implementation, must be leaned on the improvement of quality and effectiveness of functioning and management of the organization. To achieve change, the organization must develop its capacity permanently to be transformed. It assumes two prior conditions, on one hand to develop the capacity of study of transformation, on the other hand the permanente activation of process of me transformation. These three conditions can be united if the organization defines and implements a strategy of piloting of transformation. The strategy of transformation distinguishes itself from the strategy of change, because it consists in intervening in the facilities of functioning and management of the organization. Sur methodological plan, research implements the method of Research-intervention, said "Socio-economic Intervention", developed by the Institute of Socio-Economie from Firms and from Organizations (H. SAVALL and V. ZARDET, ISEOR, FRANCE). This method allows to conceive and to establish a strategy of transformation in the process of the common management of the organization and its functioning. Research shows that this fourth condition must be united to achieve change

Pełny tekst źródłaIntegration of environment preservation in firm management is enrolled in a double analytical view : either by the "external" way, that is to by learning on environmental rules setting, or by the "internal" way, integrating ecological requirement in its strategic reflexion. Our research deals with strategic repercussions of these two ways for the firm. "External" integration, built on taxation-subvention mechanisms (which come from internalization of environment externalities) and on overstepping procedures of simple reglementary conformity, is managed by public authorities for a specific aim : to orient firm management toward more environmental integration. Then, we lay down this problem : may be, the firm does a specific strategic reading about environmental rules. "Internal" integration is done at the stratégic reflexion level of the firm. It lays on environmental information system and more or less planned strategic reflexion process. The aim of these tools is to allow the development of ecologic behavior in firm. To this point, we found necessary to ask what is reality, and how firm reacts towards available tools. To answer these question, an empirical ananlysis was realiezd : a study on 65 french paint and varnish manufacturers and three post-test lead to two conclusions. First, in a "external"integration way, firms do have an indirect strategic reading of environmental rules. Second, in an "internal" integration way, strategic reflexion does not lean on planned systems, but however, they are not rejected. Firms retain reactive and preactive behaviors, wich are strategic orientations they want to find in reflexion processes

The issue of strategic behavior then arises for the market players who have to deal with a fluctuating environment. The thesis addresses this point in order to understand the competitive interactions among players in the network industries. The research question guiding this doctoral work can be formulated as follows: "How does the competitive dynamic among actors evolve in an uncertain institutional environment?" .This work tries to answer the research question by studying the competitive dynamics that are established between players in the telecommunications industry in Algeria, fueled by institutional transitions of liberalization. We focus on a dynamic approach to analyze actions and reactions between competitors, while considering the institutional changes to which the market players are subjected. On the basis of the empirical results, this approach shows how actors interact and try to shape their environment through individual and/or collective strategies. These results allow us to move beyond the classical approaches that study competition from a deterministic and static point of view. They also emphasize the importance for researchers and practitioners to consider the complexity and the diversity of competitive strategies

Pełny tekst źródłaMost of the work focusing on the evolution of Business Models (BM) focuses on internal factors such as the manager's strategic choices in terms of customers, activities or resources. External or environmental factors as determinants in the evolution of BM remain largely unexplored. The conception of the environment commonly accepted in BM approaches considers that the latter is produced by the thinking and actions of leaders rather than being imposed on them. Starting from a review of the literature focusing on the BM component approach as an analytical framework and more particularly the RCOV model (Warnier, Lecocq and Demil, 2006) and dynamic capacities (Teece, 2007, 2017), this contribution proposes to deal with the influence of an institutional environmental variable, namely international accreditations (EQUIS, AACSB) on a French management school, Burgundy School of Business. By integrating an environment variable through dynamic capacities, we propose to enrich this RCOV model with new analysis proposals not only in the BM components but also in the possible interactions between the different components. To validate our proposals and feed our theoretical framework which seeks to integrate the environment-accreditation variable in the RCOV model, we propose to carry out an exploratory case study on BSB (Burgundy School of Business) which saw its BM transform following the rise in power accreditations. All components of the school's BM have been impacted by international accreditations. We thus rehabilitate the driving role of the environment by highlighting the development of a dynamic capacity of accreditation in the evolution or even the transformation of the BM of companies and seek to characterize the BM of the company on the basis of modifications components

A cette fin, une enquête par questionnaire a été réalisée auprès d'un large échantillon d'entreprises françaises des secteurs de l'industrie manufacturière et de la réalisation de logiciels, en référence à des décisions de localisation prises sur la période 2001-2002 en France ou à l'étranger. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les décisions étudiées constituent des solutions de compromis entre les logiques économiques, les préférences personnelles des décideurs, les intérêts des différents acteurs internes à l'entreprise et les pressions émanant de son environnement économique et social.

Sustainable development has become both a strategic imperative and a “source of strategic stakes” for enterprises, irrespective of their sector of activities. However, the issue relating to the implementation or conversion of such a polysemous, polymorphic and protean concept into clear and relevant management practices remains a deep concern for the enterprises that are willing to integrate sustainable development in their strategies.This work aims at developing a comprehensive approach in line with the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in the framework of voluntarist strategies. To do so, the privileged theoretical standpoint has been the resources and competence model. Such a qualitative research consists in a multiple case study, in a perspective of literal replication. To describe, analyze and understand the implementation of sustainable development, semi-directing interviews have been carried, along with secondary data collection.This research is instrumental in stabilizing and putting in perspective the concept of sustainable development in the field of management science. First of all, it brings into focus four strategic attitudes that are likely to be adopted by enterprises, and then suggests two complementary modalities for implementing the concept of sustainable development. And finally, it offers several implementation approaches - stated in a thematic way- to address the aforementioned concept

Failure rates between 30% and as high as 70% have been regularly reported. A substantial stream of research has examined how these numbers can be improved. Partner selection has been identified as a key success factor. In fact, partner-specific attributes, affecting which partners are selected, tend to have snowball effects beyond the formation phase to the design and postformation phases. Building on previous studies investigating the attribute of reputation, this thesis fills a gap by exploring the role reputation for environmental performance can play in determining firm-specific and joint competitive advantages in the different phases of strategic alliances. In four individual but connected Essays, specific research questions are theoretically examined under the Natural-Resource-Based View (NRBV) and Strategic Cognition Perspective. Both this interest was translated into several approaches with different angles of studies and even different appreciation of each of the two constructs. Despite the great number of researchers, there is only little consensus of positions concerning the dimensions and factors which contribute to a better understanding of each of them. Ideological considerations are probably the root of such a disagreement. Each time the strategy is the object of a new definition, it exhibits in fact a distinct philosophy and a theoritical conception which is different, whereas researchers keep claiming to be in the same theoritical pattern. In this spirit, the field of strategy as well as the performance's one would be enriched if each other would deign to understand that the different patterns suggested in litterature don't come from the same theoritical, ideological and methodological conceptualization. As a consequence, rather than sink into controversy or filling with indignation for the paradoxe they evidence, the best is to see the complementarity of these patterns. In this spirit a satisfactory knowledge of the smes strategy requires the conjugation of the different patterns in the complementary and exchange's modes, the single way which can clarify its vast space in a satisfactory way. It is only the beginnings of such an approach in our knowledge's field. But the systemic approach can be used to improve it. In accordance with this orientation, the accepted approach in this research gives a greater place to the improvement of the different patterns which goes through the way they articulate themselves in a global approach's pattern, specifying in the same time the nature and the dynamic of the relations which are establishing between 5 complexes of variables, contributing to the knowledge of the strategy as well as the performance of the smes

Pełny tekst źródłaTopic of interest : The influence of natural environment in managerial strategies is widely studied, but authors mainly focus on environmental issues and not enough on practices. Sustainable development is a main reference to analyse and describe environmental strategies but because it is an ambivalent and wide-ranging notion, it is difficult to define in concrete terms what it means within the firms. Thesis : Implementing sustainable development implies the involvement of the firm's partners in the food supply-chain, in ways which depend on what the company perceives as responsibility issues. Main goals : This research is intended to analyse sustainable strategies in the food supply-chain, that is to identify models of implementation, and establish a link with environmental issues. This research is based on a framework which identifies three stages of environmental strategies (prevention of pollution, product stewardship, sustainable strategies) linked to environmental issues. Method : This research analyses five cases of sustainable strategies in the food supply-chain, in France and Switzerland : BIOLAIT, ALPINA SAVOIE, CARREFOUR, COOP and MIGROS. A qualitative analysis has been conducted, through internal and external documents, direct observation and interviews dealing with environmental strategy, its implementation and the environmental issues. Main results : Partners in the food supply-chain can be considered as stakeholders to implement a sustainable strategy. This research identifies two models of relations with those partners : responsibility with the producers (which means the producers actively contribute to the environmental strategy) and responsibility towards the producers (which implies helping the producers to reduce environmental impacts)

It concerns more specifically the firms and their environmental and sustainable development’s politics (management systems, reporting, labelization, a. S. O. ). This dissertation describes finely the concerned networks, and especially mediations provided by a multitude of texts, written and conveyed by heterogeneous actors. This “architexture” is translated into the firm’s environmental practices – a translation corresponding to the new networks’ extensions. Our methodological point of view is ethnographic; accounting for three different kinds of companies environmental politics. We wanted to understand if and how environment can contribute to a politicization of the Sphere of production, to question the instruments serving as a proof of the firm’s commitment to the environment. This research focuses on hybrid forms of environmental public policies, on the development of compromises between rationality economic (economic rationality), scientific and technical innovation and (the) construction of indicator in order to make the environment quantifiable and measurable. This study supposed a large “technical enquiry”, which dealt with statistics on one hand, and technical objects’ way of living on the other hand. The co-production of markets and environment(s) appeared finally as a pragmatic of the “less evil”, which left minimal compromise as for the possibility of an ecological ethics of the Sphere of producing

Pełny tekst źródłaThis research proposes a new solution to fulfill the need to develop an accessible mechanism to implement sustainable design in the long term, based on 2 axes. The first axis relies on the clear identification of integration trajectories. This allows the company to guide the integration process on the long term. The second axis is based on an ecodesign tool that is conceived and developed by all the main participants in the design. This axis enables a progressive evolution of environmental performance within an organization. An investigation work has been done, with specific experts for the first axis and with ecodesign pioneers companies for the second axis. We call this second point mechanism a "methodological Trojan horse" approach ("MTH") because the underlying strategy is to introduce an appropriate pretext that enables collaborative work (the ecodesign tool has to be co-designed) and to supply the organization with the necessary skills to develop the tool at a later stage. The "MTH" approach facilitates the propagation of sustainable design knowledge at all levels within the company and thus allows the company to progress towards complete integration (from a partial sustainable design approach to an eco-innovation approach, integrating the requirements of sustainable development). The whole concept of this MTH was tested over a period of two years in the company Transfix that manufactures transformers. It has successfully highlighted the benefits of this integrated approach based on the "MTH" mechanism and guided by the "ecodesign tools and methods" integration trajectory

It presents the contributions and constraints of the literature on the notion of sustainable development within the company and its managerial variation: i. E. The stakeholders approach. This approach emphasizes the classification of stakeholders, but remains silent as to how this integration in the process of environmental development strategy takes place. We’ve resorted the theory of translation as an extension of stakeholder theory in order to be able to follow the process from the point of view of process (phases) as well as in terms of variables of Incorporation (stakeholders). To solve the problem, the first stage of empirical research is a qualitative exploratory study conducted within twenty five companies and five institutions operating on behalf of sustainable development. The second step will be a detailed analysis of five case studies, which have helped to refine the model proposed in the scoping study. Following this theoretical and empirical work, we propose a mapping of the deployment process of regarding the environmental development strategy taking into account the roles of stakeholders. We’ve also show that the process of deploying an environmental development strategy is reached through the integration of stakeholders, and the role played by each one of these in the process

For this research, we use the “geogovernance” approach. The interesting fact about it is that it is based on actors’ involvement in their own territory prospects, through the use of spatial analysis methods and tools. That way, the geographer can be a scientific, expert, mediator or organiser as well. Through his cross-disciplinary training, he is able to adapt and to understand his interlocutors while deploying some innovating tools in order to build his project. Throughout this research, we create an operating procedure, developing a participating strategy inside an administrative service that we experiment before evaluation. At the end of this work, we build a reflexion helping tool for the administrator through the modelling of dynamics as well as the organisation of green spaces management from a participating procedure thought by the geographer

Failure rates between 30% and as high as 70% have been regularly reported. A substantial stream of research has examined how these numbers can be improved. Partner selection has been identified as a key success factor. In fact, partner-specific attributes, affecting which partners are selected, tend to have snowball effects beyond the formation phase to the design and postformation phases. Building on previous studies investigating the attribute of reputation, this thesis fills a gap by exploring the role reputation for environmental performance can play in determining firm-specific and joint competitive advantages in the different phases of strategic alliances. In four individual but connected Essays, specific research questions are theoretically examined under the Natural-Resource-Based View (NRBV) and Strategic Cognition Perspective. Pełny tekst źródłaIn its essence, it is situated at the point of encounter between two close but distinct disciplines; economics and management. More specifically, based on our academic background, and career, we focused our research efforts on mobilizing the concepts of strategic management for the benefit of an economic reflection dealing with the issue of sustainable territorial development in a mountainous region of Lebanon, namely the case of Kfardebian-Faraya. Taking into consideration the growth of environmental concerns and ecological anxiety, great importance is given ubiquitously, today, to the mode of utilization of natural resources, particularly those exhaustive or, in any case, considered as such. As generally known, tourism occupies a central position in the economy of many developing countries; Lebanon is not an exception, where it represents, in some years, more than 30% of the GDP. However, beyond its undeniable contributions in terms of production, employment, income, etc., the tourism dynamics in Lebanon revealed some drawbacks at economic, social and environmental levels. These limits are due mainly, in our opinion, to an irrational (not to say irresponsible) approach of managing local resources, as well as to a relative absence of rules that govern the performance of tourism professionals and the other players involved, in a way or another, in this activity. Through the analysis presented in this thesis, our effort has been to defend the principle of strategic management as a relevant mode of exploitation of local available resources, the aim being, in our case study as in others, a sustainable territorial development, integrating the economic, social and environmental dimensions, and based on the joint efforts of all local players. In this context, the field of empirical analysis that we have chosen, Kfardebian-Faraya, seemed to be particularly interesting; not only that this territory is located in Mount-Lebanon and characterized as a specialized touristic zone, but also, some tourism professionals present on this territory (Mzaar company that manages the ski station Mzaar, the Hotel Intercontinental Mzaar, the Village of Faqra Club...) are engaged in a process of strategic management (considered sustainable) of local resources. The results reached at the end of our research show that extending the concept of strategic management of resources from the enterprise level (micro-level) to the territory level (meso level) is of real relevance. As part of a territory project, integrating the economic, social and environmental dimensions, and integrating the different local players in a collective process of management, is a conductive approach to dynamism and sustainable territorial development. In the specific case of Kfardebian- Faraya, this dynamism may take place only under the guidance of the two municipalities which, as a fundamental actor, are able to promote participatory governance across the territory

Pełny tekst źródłaMadagascar meets a difficult situation regarding forest resources management. Actually, several factors linked to poverty lead to important forest losses each year. In this context, the main question to be tackled with is related to the impact of forest policies implemented in the country, in the aim to achieve a sustainable management in the long run. This thesis deals with the effects involved by these policies and tries to determine whether these policies really give responses to the issues of forest management in Madagascar. Consequently, two points of view have to be taken into consideration: the national one and the local one, through the defintion of macroeconomic and individual models. This analysis uses a social and environmental accounting matrix, the data envelopment analysis method, a logit model, a structural equations model, time series and a reduced computable general equilibrium model. The main conclusions emerging from the studies have given the evidence of the low degree of the Malagasy local actors'involvement in the resources management in spite of their dependence upon it. Besides, empirical results have also shown that all policies are not yet efficient enough

Sustainable development has become both a strategic imperative and a “source of strategic stakes” for enterprises, irrespective of their sector of activities. However, the issue relating to the implementation or conversion of such a polysemous, polymorphic and protean concept into clear and relevant management practices remains a deep concern for the enterprises that are willing to integrate sustainable development in their strategies.This work aims at developing a comprehensive approach in line with the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in the framework of voluntarist strategies. To do so, the privileged theoretical standpoint has been the resources and competence model. Such a qualitative research consists in a multiple case study, in a perspective of literal replication. To describe, analyze and understand the implementation of sustainable development, semi-directing interviews have been carried, along with secondary data collection.This research is instrumental in stabilizing and putting in perspective the concept of sustainable development in the field of management science. First of all, it brings into focus four strategic attitudes that are likely to be adopted by enterprises, and then suggests two complementary modalities for implementing the concept of sustainable development. And finally, it offers several implementation approaches - stated in a thematic way- to address the aforementioned concept

Pełny tekst źródłaEnhancing walkability of public space for the elderly living in suburban areas often means intervening in environments that are of low density, where functions are highly segregated and where walking infrastructures are lacking in quality or simply don’t exist. While many studies have done the demonstration that high density, mix land use, and walking facilities tend to support the decision to walk among all ages, how can suburban public administrations plan fruitful interventions to support walking among the elderly? Based on available documentation, this study identifies the most relevant criteria to locate and shape interventions meant to enhance walkability of public spaces for the elderly living in existing suburbs. Based on these criteria, the study then proposes interventions for the specific suburban neighborhood of Cartier in Laval, Quebec, Canada. This second phase of the study involves mixed methods with semi-directed interviews, walking interviews and participatory workshops to validate and bring precision to the process and criteria identified in the previous stage of study. To enhance the walkability of public space for elderly living in suburban areas, the results of this study suggest that urban intervention should at first focus on removing obstacles to walking. They also suggest that accessibility to leisure destinations as well as attractiveness of the path are part of the most relevant criteria to consider. According to those findings, interventions planned to enhance walkability of suburbs towards the elderly should take into primary account preferences related to leisure and path attractiveness. In line with the results of several recent studies on the subject, the study also concludes to the importance of involving older people in intervention processes to increase the walkability of the suburbs.
