Streszczenie:
With the development of high-performance wide-band-gap devices and increasing converter frequency, planar transformers are widely used in high-frequency and high-power-density power conversions. Due to the skin effect and proximity effect, accurate thermal analysis and a simplified thermal model of planar transformers are needed for quick thermal verification as well as system design. This paper proposes two thermal simplification models based on the planar transformer’s thermal impedance network. The internal power loss and thermal coupling between each component are first analyzed. Then, based on thermal radiation theory, the simplified thermal model of the planar transformer is presented. It only requires the input of the total power loss of the planar transformer to calculate the temperature rise, and it does not need the power loss of each component. Finally, the simulation and experimental verification are carried out on a MHz prototype.

Wide-bandgap technology evolution compels the advancement of efficient pulse-width gate-driver devices. Integrated enhanced gate-driver planar transformers are a source of electromagnetic disturbances due to inter-winding capacitances, which serve as a route to common-mode(CM) currents. This paper will simulate, via ANSYS Q3D Extractor, the unforeseen parasitic effects of a pulse planar transformer integrated in a SiC MOSFET gate-driver card. Moreover, the pulse transformer will be ameliorated by adding distinctive shielding layers aiming to suppress CM noise effects and endure high dv/dt occurrences intending to validate experimental tests. The correlation between stray capacitance and dv/dt immunity results after shielding insertion will be reported.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents a compact nonlinear thermal model of pulse transformers. The proposed model takes into account differentiation in values of the temperatures of a ferromagnetic core and each winding. The model is formulated in the form of an electric network realising electrothermal analogy. It consists of current sources representing power dissipated in the core and in each of the windings, capacitors representing thermal capacitances and controlled current sources modelling the influence of dissipated power on the thermal resistances in the proposed model. Both self-heating phenomena in each component of the transformer and mutual thermal couplings between each pair of these components are taken into account. A description of the elaborated model is presented, and the process to estimate the model parameters is proposed. The proposed model was verified experimentally for different transformers. Good agreement between the calculated and measured waveforms of each component temperature of the tested pulse transformers was obtained. Differences between the results of measurements and calculations did not exceed 9% for transformers with a toroidal core and 13% for planar transformers.

Streszczenie:
A new planar micro-transformer having sandwich spiral coil structure is fabricated using MEMS micro-fabrication technique. Stack interwinding coil is designed to achieve high coupling and higher winding number at relatively small coil area. In this work, stack sandwich interwinding coil structure is fabricated by bonding the substrates of the coil at connection pads using conductive epoxy material. This method replaces the use of conventional via connections that cause the most problem of current conductance in planar structures. The inductance of fabricated coil are measured at wide range of operating frequency using cascade GSG probe. The results show that the proposed technique is an alternative way in fabricating a simple and cost effective 3-dimensional structure of stack micro-transformer.

Streszczenie:
Nowadays, the demand for high power converters for DC applications, such as renewable sources or ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles, is constantly growing. Galvanic isolation is mandatory in most of these applications. In this context, the Solid State Transformer (SST) converter plays a fundamental role. The adoption of the Medium Frequency Transformers (MFT) guarantees galvanic isolation in addition to high performance in reduced size. In the present paper, a multi MFT structure is proposed as a solution to improve the power density and the modularity of the system. Starting from 20kW planar transformer model, experimentally validated, a multi-transformer structure is analyzed. After an analytical treatment of the Input Parallel Output Series (IPOS) structure, an equivalent electrical model of a 200kW IPOS (made by 10 MFTs) is introduced. The model is validated by experimental measurements and tests.

Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a current transformer model based on the principle of B-dot. It can reflect the change of transmission line current and meet the requirement of automation and intelligence for current measurement in power system. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a new type of current transformer is designed on the principle of B-dot, which has the structure of the inverse series of planar air core coils and the form of printed circuit board (PCB). With this structure, the current transformers can induce magnetic field quite well. The finite element simulation for the current transformer with n layers structure is conducted in the Maxwell, which help to optimize the design of the current transformer. Findings By setting up the experimental platform, the experiment of the current transformer is carried out. The results of the test show that the measurement accuracy can satisfy the requirement of measurement. Besides, the new current transformer has good transient characteristics and can meet the needs of the development of smart grid. Originality value The new type of current transformer is based on the principle of B-dot, which is designed with a new type of non-contact PCB hollow coil current transformer. It has no iron core, no ferromagnetic effect and the phenomenon of ferromagnetic resonance. It has great progress in its insulation performance, volume and bandwidth response. In addition, the planar hollow coil of the inverse series structure can make the structure more accurate.

Streszczenie:
Soft magnetic materials are at the core of electromagnetic devices. Planar transformers are essential pieces of equipment working at high frequency. Usually, their magnetic core is made of various types of ferrites or iron-based alloys. An upcoming alternative might be the replacement the ferrites with FINEMET-type alloys, of nominal composition of Fe73.5Si13.5B9Cu3Nb1 (at. %). FINEMET is a nanocrystalline material exhibiting excellent magnetic properties at high frequencies, a soft magnetic alloy that has been in the focus of interest in the last years thanks to its high saturation magnetization, high permeability, and low core loss. Here, we present and discuss the measured and modelled properties of this material. Owing to the limits of the experimental set-up, an estimate of the total magnetic losses within this magnetic material is made, for values greater than the measurement limits of the magnetic flux density and frequency, with reasonable results for potential applications of FINMET-type alloys and thin films in high frequency planar transformer cores.

Conceiving planar magnetic components for power electronic converters is very constraining, especially in the case of prototype development. Indeed, such making requires skills, specific appliances as well as human time for setting up the machine tools and the fabrication process. With the emergence of Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab), conceiving of planar copper foil prototypes becomes more feasible in a shortened time process for engineers and researchers. This paper presents a methodology and process for conceiving power planar transformers with the help of machines and tools that can be found in the usual FabLab.

Streszczenie:
The paper analyses the aspects of modelling the operation of a three-phase core-type transformer. The features of the magnetic system construction of the transformer, which generate asymmetry, are disclosed. The fundamentals and methods for modelling a transformer in dynamic modes are considered. The main purpose of the paper is to research the influence of taking into account the asymmetry of the transformer magnetic core on its dynamic model. The paper proposes the mathematical model of a three-phase planar core-type transformer, which takes into account the asymmetry of the magnetic core. The mathematical model is based on the model of a generalized electric machine in the ABC axes, which is widely recognized and characterized by a high level of adequacy. A refined model, which takes into account the power losses in the magnetic core, has used. As is well known, such a model is characterized by higher accuracy and adequacy in the calculation of transient processes. For the proposed mathematical model, a comparative analysis of the calculated curves of transient processes for a 63 kVA transformer with a voltage of 6 / 0.4 kV is made. To disclose the effect of taking into account the magnetic core asymmetry of the transformer in the mathematical model, the current differences were calculated in pu for the modes of switching on at full power and three-phase short circuit. These modes are the most common and indicative in the analysis of the operability and stability of transformers. It was found that the most significant difference, which is obtained by taking into account the magnetic system asymmetry of the transformer, is 5…6% when it is switched on at full load. Thus, the relatively simple transformations and updating of the mathematical model of the transformer allow significantly increase its adequacy. The proposed mathematical model can be more effectively used when the non-typical design of three-phase transformers or reactors with significant asymmetry of the magnetic core is considered.

Streszczenie:
In isolated power converters, the transformer is a key part of voltage transformation and isolation. Since common-mode (CM) noise is rather difficult to suppress compared with different-mode (DM) noise, more and more scholars are paying attention to the characteristics of CM noise, especially in high-frequency CM noise behaviors. CM noise can be further divided into conducted CM noise and radiated CM noise, and the main focus of this paper is on conducted CM noise. The CM coupling capacitance of the transformer is one of the main contributors of CM noise, which has been verified in many previous studies. Hence, eliminating the CM noise in a transformer coupling path can significantly lower the whole CM noise level of the converter. Professional conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing instruments are quite expensive. In this paper, a general transformer evaluation technique for CM noise behavior is proposed. Only a signal generator and oscilloscope can achieve transformer CM noise behavior evaluation. PCB planar flyback transformers are designed, and a series of noise spectrums and voltage waveforms can verify the effectiveness of the proposed transformer evaluation method. The flyback adapter porotype can pass the EMI standard limited line EN55022 class B by the proposed evaluation method.

Streszczenie:
The article presents a novel on-line partial discharge (PD) monitoring system for power transformers, whose functioning is based on the simultaneous use of three unconventional methods of PD detection: high-frequency (HF), ultra-high frequency (UHF), and acoustic emission (AE). It is the first monitoring system equipped in an active dielectric window (ADW), which is a combined ultrasonic and electromagnetic PD sensor. The article discusses in detail the process of designing and building individual modules of hardware and software layers of the system, wherein the most attention was paid to the PD sensors, i.e., meandered planar inverted-F antenna (MPIFA), high-frequency current transformer (HFCT), and active dielectric window with ultrasonic transducer, which were optimized for detection of PDs occurring in oil-paper insulation. The prototype of the hybrid monitoring system was first checked on a 330 MVA large power transformer during the induced voltage test with partial discharge measurement (IVPD). Next, it was installed on a 31.5 MVA substation power transformer and integrated according to the standard IEC 61850 with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system registering voltage, active power, and oil temperature of the monitored unit. The obtained results showed high sensitivity of the manufactured PD sensors as well as the advantages of the simultaneous use of three techniques of PD detection and the possibility of discharge parameter correlation with other power transformer parameters.

Streszczenie:
Concepts for ceramic integrated transmission line transformers (TLT) to conduct powers up to some kW and currents up to 10 A with an impedance ratio of 4:1 are presented. In this power range, a TLT usually consists of coaxial cables. To optimize size, improve integrability and enhance electric performance, our work pursues the integration into a planar multilayer board with electroplated conductors using Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics Technology (LTCC). The methodical design approach is presented, using complementary simulation tools for circuit, multilayer and FEM analysis to reach the aforementioned application-specific performance. Size is reduced further using specific ferrites and optimizing their position. The correlation between measured characteristics of various transmission line transformers produced and underlying design considerations are given in detail. Minimum sizes of 10 to 15 mm squared have been realized using single sided metallisation, which is also well suited for electroplating.
