Pierre Bourdieu (1930–2002) war ein französischer Ethnologe und Soziologe, der von 1981 bis 2001 einen Lehrstuhl für Soziologie am Collège de France innehatte. Cette thèse cherche à démontrer que la notion d'économie générale des pratiques, utilisée par Pierre Bourdieu sans réelle définition, peut être éclairée philosophiquement. Notre problème consiste à expliquer comment Bourdieu peut à la fois critiquer l'application économiciste de certaines notions à d'autres champs du savoir, tout en construisant lui-même une sociologie où le vocable économique abonde. La première étape de notre travail consiste à définir la notion générique d'économie au sein du corpus de Bourdieu et à la distinguer de son application spécifique. La généalogie de la notion nous permet de réinscrire la méta-catégorie d'économie dans un paysage plus large au sein duquel on détaille ses usages passés (économie domestique, économie divine, économie rhétorique, économie animale et économie politique). Nous proposons alors une hypothèse pour définir la notion primaire de valeur sociale d'une manière générique afin de reconstruire ensuite les notions économiques de second rang de Bourdieu (biens symboliques, marché symbolique, intérêt, investissement, capital, etc.). Ce travail d'élargissement du sens des notions économiques s'applique également à certaines notions que Bourdieu évoque seulement, comme celle de crédit symbolique. Enfin, nous montrons que cette problématique de l'économie éclaire différemment d'autres parties de son travail et nous analysons alors l'économicité de certains termes classiques (habitus, champ, violence symbolique)
This dissertation aims at demonstrating that the concept of the general economy of practices that Pierre Bourdieu uses without a proper definition can be understood philosophically. The goal lies in explaining how Bourdieu can criticize the mobilization of economic notions in other fields of knowledge whereas he crafts a sociology with these notions at its core. The first step of our work is to define the notion of the general economy of practices and to differentiate its largest acceptation from its specific understandings. The genealogy of the notion offers a broader perspective on its previous apparitions (domestic economy, divine economy, rhetorical economy, animal economy and political economy). Then, we suggest a hypothesis to define the notion of social value in its generic sense. We rely on this first notion to derive the understanding of Bourdieu's economic categories (symbolic goods, symbolic market, interest, investment, capital, etc.). We indicate that this broadened meaning of economic notions can be extended to other concepts. We notably define the notion of symbolic credit in relation to Bourdieu's general economy of practices. Finally, we show that this economic perspective can shed light on other areas of his work such as the classical analyses of habitus, field and symbolic violence

This research study is about the lives of editors-in-chief of Austrian daily newspapers after 1945 zooming in on socialeconomic factors. The analysis is based on Pierre Bourdieu's three capital sources - economic, cultural, and social capital. Patterns with regard to the dominance of these capital sources in the lives of editors-in-chief can be observed and lead to the distinction into four different cohorts. Besides, four different ahistorical ideal types of curriculum vitae can be identified that show in each case a different dominance of the capital sources. In these ideal types every editor-in-chief of the research is included. Women take a special position in the field of journalism by having to develop their capital resources more strongly. Resumo: A definição conceitual de campos sociais na praxeologia bourdieusiana implica considerá-los como entidades nominais relativamente autônomas, portadoras de um efeito de illusio próprio que se apresenta aos agentes como regras específicas, determinantes e determinadas por práticas historicamente constituídas no interior de cada campo que impõe aos agentes que nele se encontram certo savoir faire possibilitando, assim, a diferenciação e a homogeneização entre as práticas no espaço social. Contudo a propriedade dos campos de serem relativamente autônomos nos incita a questão, relativos a que? A resposta, mesmo que necessária, não pode ser encontrada de maneira clara nos escritos de Bourdieu, uma vez que este não se atentou diretamente a ela, porém fora possível, dando consequências conceituais aos princípios epistemológicos da teoria, desenvolver três condições a partir das quais os campos relacionam-se entre si. As duas primeiras apresentam-se com causalidades, isto é, como condição de existência da própria teoria e a terceira como uma determinação que, dado seu poder de interferência coage a lógica interna dos campos. Denominamos a primeira de causalidade de transitiva e percebemos que ela corresponde ao movimento de inter-relação entre os campos, decorrente tanto da movimentação dos agentes de um campo ao outro, quanto pela reestruturação dos campos em si mesmos que afetam outros campos. A segunda relação causal é apreendida como imanente a formação dos campos e se refere a política da luta de classes que, transformada pelas regras específicas de cada campo, apresenta uma homologia entre as posições de dominância nos campos específicos com a posição de dominância e acúmulo de capitais no espaço social. Por fim, o terceiro elemento determinante na dinâmica diferencial dos campos é o Estado que atua, segundo Bourdieu, com golpes de tirania nos campos dada a posição assumida e o poder acumulado historicamente por ele. Estas três condições que se efetivam simultaneamente nos permitem observar que a ideia de autonomia relativa entre os campos assegura a univocidade e a diferenciação específica no espaço social
Abstract: In Bourdieu's praxeology, the theoretical definition of social fields implies considering them relatively autonomous nominal entities carrying an illusio effect, which presents itself to agents as specific rules that both determine and are determined by historically constituted practices set into each field. Fields, in turn, impose a savoir-faire to their members, enabling the differentiation and homogenizing of practices in social space. However, if social fields are indeed relatively autonomous, the question raised is: relative to what? In spite of its centrality, the answer to this question is not to be found clearly in Bourdieu¿s writings, as the author did not face it directly. Nevertheless, given the conceptual consequences and epistemological principles of his theory, it is possible to draw three conditions through which social fields could relate to one another. First and second conditions are presented as causalities, meaning they are prerequisites for the theory itself. The third condition is a determination which, given its power of interference, coerces the internal logic of the fields. The first condition is hereby called transitional causality and it corresponds to the movement of inter-relation between the fields, originated in both the agents¿ movement from one field into the other and the fields¿ own process of restructuring that may as well affect other fields. The second causal relation is immanent to the formation of fields and it refers to the class struggle politics that presents a homology between dominant positions in specific fields and the dominant position of accumulating capitals in social space. Finally, the third determinant element in the differential dynamics of fields is the State, an actor who, according to Bourdieu, promotes hits of tyranny in fields given the position and power it has accumulated in the course of history. These three simultaneously effective conditions allow us to observe the idea of relative autonomy among fields and ensures the persistence of univocity and the specific differentiation in social space

A gramática do social, instituída nos discursos de Pierre Bourdieu, conforma o objeto da tese ora apresentada. Com o propósito de refletir sobre os “fundamentos” da arquitetura teórica do sociólogo francês, os pressupostos da gramática de jogos de linguagem, elaborada por Ludwig Wittgenstein, foram constituídos em instrumentos de investigação. Para tanto, são apresentadas inicialmente, algumas das principais construções de Bourdieu sobre a ciência, mais especificamente, os princípios de “seu” racionalismo aplicado e as constatações relativas às características do campo científico, estes delineando um panorama de seu pensamento que está presente nas observações sobre sua linguagem. A apresentação da gramática de jogos de linguagem, por sua vez, inclui alguns dos argumentos que constam em Investigações Filosóficas e Da certeza, e que, essencialmente, sustentam a autonomia da linguagem na constituição do sentido. Em outras palavras, nos termos do filósofo austríaco, as práticas linguísticas estabelecidas por formas de vida instituem o sentido que, deste modo, apenas pode ser desvelado na dependência dos esclarecimentos relativos aos usos de palavras e enunciados de uma linguagem. Desta perspectiva, conhecer o funcionamento da linguagem de Bourdieu tornou-se condição para desvelar o sentido de suas constatações sociológicas, por permitir o reconhecimento das regras determinadas pelas aplicações de palavras e proposições em seus discursos, estes destinados à descrição do objeto/conceito social. O que orientou as observações sobre a referida linguagem sociológica, mais precisamente, relativas às técnicas ou recursos linguísticos mobilizados para a descrição do social nas obras selecionadas. Assim, a atenção dirigiu-se aos usos de palavras que instituem as peculiaridades do modo de representação do social de Bourdieu, tendo como referência as noções de paradigma, imagem e aspecto, a exemplo dos usos de conceitos como espaço, estrutura, sistema, além de termos mais característicos, como campo, habitus e capital. A reflexão estende-se, mais propriamente, em relação aos fundamentos da sociologia bourdieuniana, com base na concepção de proposições gramaticais, conduzindo a questões sobre a possibilidade de reconhecer fronteiras entre o empírico e o gramatical em seus discursos. Portanto, este exercício de observação, assentado em tais pressupostos, permitiu uma reflexão sobre possibilidades e limites implicados no esforço para reconhecer os fins de sua justificação ou as bases inamovíveis do jogo de linguagem bourdieuniano, abrigado pelas formas de vida associadas às ciências sociais. Proximidades e distinções entre o ponto de vista sócioepistemológico de Bourdieu e a perspectiva da autonomia da linguagem sustentada por Wittgenstein, também, integram esta elaboração, como objeto das digressões que apresentam uma teia de questões e tensões relativas ao “encontro” das certezas sócio-históricas de Bourdieu com as razões wittgensteinianas sobre as “contingências” inerentes à linguagem. Este exercício, portanto, não se volta ao social como fenômeno do mundo, e sim sobre a constituição do “fenômeno social” pela gramática do objeto/conceito/prova designado pela palavra social, na gramática instituída por práticas linguísticas de Pierre Bourdieu.

Este trabalho procura pôr em diálogo a sociologia de Pierre Bourdieu e sua crítica às instituições, que simbolicamente propiciam e fomentam relações de dominação, e o culto cristão. No primeiro capítulo se procura agrupar diversos conceitos de Pierre Bourdieu em torno daquilo que se denominou gênese das relações de dominação. Após um pequeno esforço por aproximar Bourdieu e teologia, formula-se, a partir de elementos dispersos de sua obra, uma idéia do modo através do qual surgiriam e se reproduziriam relações sociais de dominação. As relações de gênero são apresentadas como exemplo onde se verifica a tese de Bourdieu. Posteriormente se aponta para as instituições que promovem este processo, indicadas no percurso pelo próprio Bourdieu: a família, a igreja, a escola e o Estado. O segundo capítulo traz uma aproximação à história de vida de Pierre Bourdieu. Constata-se que seu caráter parece aproximá-lo à teologia. A parte conclusiva deste capítulo reúne elementos da obra de Bourdieu que permanecem como um saldo crítico a ser contabilizado pela teologia. O terceiro capítulo aproxima aspectos da obra de Pierre Bourdieu ao culto cristão. Neste trajeto, faz-se uso do conceito de performance. Trata-se de uma tentativa de construir uma ponte, que coloque na mesma sintonia a reflexão crítica de Pierre Bourdieu e as discussões sobre o culto e a liturgia. O último capítulo concentra-se em reunir argumentos a favor de um culto que seja essencialmente contestador de uma ordem social baseada em relações de dominação. Busca-se oferecer uma idéia de culto que tome conscientemente seu aspecto sócio-político de construção da sociedade e o utilize com a finalidade de transformá-la em uma outra, livre de relações de dominação.
This work tries to bring into dialogue the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu and his critique about the institutions, which symbolically provide and promote relations of domination, and Christian worship. The first chapter tries to group various concepts of Pierre Bourdieu around that what is called genesis of the relations of domination. After a small effort to approximate Bourdieu and theology, will be offered an idea, from scattered elements of his work, of the way in which social relations of domination arise and are reproduced. The relations of gender are presented as an example where will be verified the view of Bourdieu. After this, it will be pointed to the institutions that promote this process, indicated in his work: the family, church, school and State. The second chapter provides an approach to the life story of Pierre Bourdieu. It seems that his character bring him closer to theology. The concluding part of this chapter brings together elements of the work of Bourdieu that remain as a critical balance to be accounted for by theology. The third chapter brings aspects of the work of Pierre Bourdieu to Christian worship. In this way, the concept of performance is used. This is an attempt to build a bridge, which puts on the same line the critical reflection of Pierre Bourdieu and discussions on worship and liturgy. The final chapter focuses on gathering fundaments for a worship that is essentially refuter of a social order based on relations of domination. Seeks to provide an idea of worship that consciously take its socio-political aspect of building the society and use it in order to transform it into another, free of relations of domination.

Nathalia Edenmont is a controversial and uncompromising photo artist who has caused the whole world to rage over her obscene photographs. In this thesis I have researched Edenmonts artistry with help of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieus field analysis. By using Bourdieus's different field concepts I have researched Edenmonts artistic career by concepts such as habitus, consecration and different principles. The starting point of this research has been that Nathalia Edenmont is in the autonomous artistic field. I give examples of images that have been highly debated and I have collected information of how Edenmont sees her own images and her artistry. In this thesis I show amongst other things an example with Edenmonts photograph of dead rabbits with Elizabethan hair styling, cut up mice that work like finger puppets and children who are bound up in wire. Nathalia Edenmont autonomous artistry is deeply rooted in her background and the environment in which she was raised. Her habitus is strongly affected by earlier experiences of growing up in a corrupt land and having to cope on her own from the age of 14 years old after the death of her parents.

Qu'en est-il des intellectuels en ce début de XXIe siècle? Qui sont-ils? Et quel devrait être la portée et le sens de leur engagement dans l'espace public? Telles sont les questions qui animent notre questionnement philosophique actuel. Au carrefour de ces interrogations philosophiques, un questionnement encore plus profond émerge: la réalité même de la notion d'intellectuels. Dans les années quatre-vingt-dix, le sociologue Pierre Bourdieu sera, en France, la figure tutélaire de l'intellectuel engagé. Au-delà de son indéniable charisme médiatique, ce penseur appuie l'autorité sociale de son discours sur la reconnaissance internationale d'une oeuvre scientifique considérable. Une oeuvre qui, en définitive, s'intéresse aux rapports existants entre l'individu et l'action ( praxis ). De surcroit, l'un des axes importants que développent les travaux de Pierre Bourdieu est une sociologie critique des intellectuels. C'est pourquoi, dans la perspective de notre propre questionnement sur la notion d'intellectuels, nous avons choisi pour interlocuteur principal: le sociologue français. Avec l'intuition initiale, pour la rédaction du présent mémoire, que le cadre conceptuel bourdieusien constitue un outil théorique particulièrement pertinent pour développer et articuler une meilleure compréhension de la notion d'intellectuels. D'ailleurs, c'est cette hypothèse première de la fécondité des travaux de Pierre Bourdieu que cherche à valider l'ensemble de nos développements théoriques en se demandant si : «le cadre conceptuel bourdieusien permet, véritablement, une clarification significative de la notion d'intellectuels?» Notre réponse, à cette évaluation du cadre conceptuel bourdieusien, s'élaborera grâce à la lecture critique d'un corpus ciblé de l'oeuvre bourdieusienne. Notre analyse portant, pour l'essentiel, sur les concepts d'«habitus» (chap. I), de «champ» (chap. II) et de «violence symbolique» (chap. III). Ces trois concepts forment les trois chapitres de notre mémoire. Tout d'abord, parce que l'étude de l'habitus, en tant qu'«extériorité intériorisée» d'un individu donné, est propice au décryptage des trajectoires sociales, à la fois publiques et privées, des intellectuels. Le champ pour sa part, compris comme la cristallisation d'un microcosme social autonome à l'intérieur du grand univers social, est susceptible de nous révéler les «tenants et les aboutissants» des interactions sociales qui animent le monde social des intellectuels. Enfin, avec l'idée de violence symbolique, nous verrons comment l'actualisation de cette force «douce et invisible», qui s'exerce avec l'assentiment même de ses victimes, est en réalité l'expression d'un «pouvoir symbolique» qui en tant que pouvoir idéologique est pouvoir d'une essence proprement intellectuelle. Enfin, comme le cadre conceptuel bourdieusien, malgré son indéniable apport à notre travail de recherche, renferme également d'importantes limites conceptuelles. La conclusion générale du présent mémoire, nous apprendra combien il est nécessaire de nuancer la fécondité, initialement supposée, de ce cadre conceptuel pour penser la notion d'intellectuels.

Denna uppsats har haft som syfte att undersöka två olika författarverk rörande TV som medium, dess utformning och påverkan på kultur. De verk jag valt att analysera är Om Televisionen av Pierre Bourdieu och TV: Teknik och kulturell form av Raymond Williams. Tanken har även varit att jämföra dessa två verk för att se vad de har gemensamt och vilka skillnader man kan utläsa av dem. För att man skall få en uppfattning om vilka Pierre Bourdieu och Raymond Williams är har jag även valt att skriva övergripande om dem och deras ideer/teorier i allmänhet. Jag analyserar deras teorier och ideér om TV inom olika områden som de framför i respektive verk samt vilket budskap dessa förmedlar.

O trabalho desenvolve uma exegese dos quadros teórico-metodológicos de análise da vida social avançados por Pierre Bourdieu e Anthony Giddens, concentrando-se nas formas pelas quais cada um destes autores ataca o problema fundacional da relação entre os planos da agência e da estrutura, tomados como as duas dimensões essencialmente constitutivas de qualquer retrato ou investigação do universo societário. O exame de tal problemática justifica-se pelo fato de que a teoria da prática de Bourdieu e a teoria da estruturação de Giddens têm como alicerce comum a tentativa de superação de um espectro de dicotomias inter-relacionadas que atravessam a história do pensamento científico-social no século XX, tendo sido expressas por uma variedade de rótulos binomiais, tais como subjetivismo/objetivismo, individualismo/holismo e micro/macro. A investigação das inovações conceituais e teses sócio-ontológicas desenhadas nas teorias dos autores supracitados é situada contra o pano de fundo de uma apresentação de tais antinomias, as quais indicam a tendência, corporificada em uma impressionante diversidade de perspectivas teórico-metodológicas, à formulação de concepções do relacionamento entre a ação individual subjetivamente propelida, de um lado, e as propriedades estruturais ou institucionais de formações coletivas, de outro, nas quais uma primazia ontológica e/ou explanatória é aprioristicamente imputada a uma destas esferas. Nesse sentido, o foco da exposição das armaduras teórico-analíticas de Giddens e Bourdieu se dirige ao elenco dos argumentos pelos quais ambos buscam demonstrar os limites de soluções teóricas unilaterais ao problema da articulação entre as instâncias da agência e da estrutura, ao mesmo tempo em que tecem instrumentos heurísticos orientados precisamente no sentido da captura da relação de condicionalidade recíproca estabelecida entre as mesmas no desenrolar da existência sócio-humana. Este percurso exegético desemboca, por fim, na conclusão de que a teoria da prática e a teoria da estruturação consistem em versões distintas de um modelo praxiológico-estruturacionista de investigação do mundo social, um enfoque que tem como pedra de toque a tese (trivial apenas à primeira vista) de que a caracterização da vida societária como fluxo ininterrupto de práticas configura-se como o ponto de partida heuristicamente mais frutífero para a construção de um retrato acurado dos processos simultâneos de constituição da sociedade pelos agentes e de constituição dos agentes pela sociedade. ____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The work develops an exegesis of the theoretical-methodological frameworks of social analysis formulated by Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens, focusing on the ways through which each of these authors tackles the foundational problem of the relation between the spheres of agency and structure, taken as the two essentially constitutive dimensions of any portrait or investigation of the societal universe. The exam of this problematic is justified by the fact that Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Giddens’s theory of structuration have as their common foundation the attempt to overcome a specter of inter-related dichotomies that stalk through the history of XXth century social-scientific thought, being referred to through a variety of binomial labels, such as subjectivism/objectivism, individualism/holism and micro/macro. The investigation of the conceptual innovations and social-ontological theses drawn in the theories of the above quoted athors is situated against the backdrop of a presentation of such antinomies, which indicate the tendency, embodied in an impressive diversity of theoretical-methodological perspectives, towards the formulation of conceptions of the relationship between subjectively propelled individual action, on the one hand, and structural or institutional properties of collective formations, on the other, in which an ontological and/or explanatory primacy is aprioristically imputed to one of these spheres. The focus of the exposition of the theoretical-analytical armors of Giddens and Bourdieu is directed towards the reunion of the arguments through which both try to demonstrate the limits of unilateral theoretical solutions to the problem of the articulation between the instances of agency and structure, while weaving, at the same time, heuristic instruments oriented precisely towards the capture of the relation of reciprocal conditionality established between those instances in the course of human social existence. This exegetical path leads, at last, to the conclusion that the theory of practice and the theory of structuration consist in two distinct versions of a praxeological-structurationist model of investigation of the social world, an approach that has as its cornerstone the thesis (a trivial one only at first sight) that states that the characterization of societal life as an endless flow of practices constitutes the heuristically most fruitful starting point to the construction of an accurate portrait of the simultaneous processes of constitution of society by agents and of constitution of agents by society.

Drawing on interpretative semantics as a theoretical model, this research uses a series of investigations of a corpus classified according to the sociologist's empirical fields. This classification allows having four sub-corpus which correspond to the Kabylia, colonial Algeria, the peasant Bearn and contemporary France. Relying on the hypothesis of the social transformation, the semantic description shows that the global corpus can be read as a dialectical sequence articulating three periods: the world before the transformation (Kabylia), the world during transformation (Algeria, Béarn) and the world after transformation (France). All along the research, a variety of interpretive and inter-textual processes are highlighted within and among the different parts of the corpus

The present study is an interrogation of theories of culture and nation in the context of spectacular sports. It proposes a view of nationalism as discourses that articulate and produce nations through narrative acts. A wide array of concepts and tools are drawn from the work of Pierre Bourdieu and contrasted with methods and notions from discursive and semiotic analysis to interrogate a national-sports nexus in which sports are vehicles to embody nations, their matrices of thought and perception, and their dominant order of masculinity and heteronormativity in the national subject, so that this order appears natural and commonsensical. Particular attention is given to the case of South Africa’s participation in the 1998 World Cup, and the way the epic genre was employed to frame the event and produce a particular kind of national body. Spectacular sports events provide nations with opportunities to disseminate narratives that regulate desire and conjure a particular kind of national fantasy – what Bourdieu referred to as illusio – in subjects. This work makes a distinction between an epic body of nationalism, a body enmeshed in "the natural and authentic," and an excessive body. However, mediations of sports are never merely reflections of social events but themselves participate in producing these events as meaningful and anchor them as national. Furthermore, an actively interpreting subject is required for the production of meaning, and in this regard the thesis offers a critique of Bourdieu’s limited view on what it entails for a recipient of nationalist discourse to be active. The questions addressed by this study is twofold: how and what kind of national order of the body and desire is manufactured through spectacular sports events, and how are mediations of such events made meaningful in subjects? The open-ended character of signification means that beneath the level of nationalist anchorage of spectacular sports events other articulations are possible. Drawing on Bourdieu’s view of sports as forms of silent dressage, the thesis suggests that there is a potential excess of meaning that enables such events to become potential sites of subjective truth: as viewers realise the fantasmatic character of such mediations they may come to question the notion that spectacular sports are something more than just a game.

Esta tese busca identificar os principais pontos na teoria de Bourdieu sobre o julgamento estético mais voltado para a arte, e após tal, confrontar suas condições e limites diante de outras leituras e possibilidades críticas alternativas, como por exemplo, no debate entre as noções de consciência e racionalidade, encontradas na filosofia da mente de John Searle e no individualismo metodológico de Raymond Boudon e Jon Elster; além da inserção de outras leituras da teoria institucional da arte e de acadêmicos considerados pós-bourdieusianos. Esta tese ainda pretende desdobrar a questão do julgamento estético em cinco eixos principais, distribuídos ao longo de seis capítulos subsequentes: 1 – O habitus em Pierre Bourdieu; 2 – As convenções da arte; 3 – A questão mente-corpo; 4 – Questões sobre a crença; 5 e 6 – O mundo agonístico de Pierre Bourdieu (mais especificamente, um mundo cujo debate incide sobre dois conceitos-chave, os de campo e capital). Com esses movimentos, esta tese também levanta possibilidades adicionais diante da teoria de Bourdieu, ao elencar tópicos mais críticos, ao mesmo tempo em que reconhece uma série de contribuições ainda vigentes da perspectiva bourdieusiana para a teoria e o pensamento social. Finalmente, esta tese se dirige para alguns caminhos e possibilidades atuais do julgamento estético, ao traçar alguns debates de ordem política e ao destacar como algumas práticas são emblemáticas para revelarem uma série de experiências estéticas no cotidiano dos indivíduos.
This thesis seeks to identify the main points in the theory of Bourdieu regarding the art oriented aesthetic judgment, and after that, confront its conditions and limits facing other alternatives critical readings and possibilities, as for example, in the debate between the notions of consciousness and rationality, found in the philosophy of mind of John Searle and in the methodological individualism of Raymond Boudon and Jon Elster; as well as the insertion of other readings from the institutional theory of art and from post-bourdieusian academics. This thesis intends to unfold the question of aesthetic judgment in five main axis, distributed over six subsequent chapters: 1 – The habitus in Pierre Bourdieu; 2 – The conventions of art; 3 – The body-mind issue; 4 – Questions about belief; 5 and 6 – The agonistic world of Pierre Bourdieu (more specifically, a world whose debate focus on two key concepts, the field and the capital). With these movements, this thesis also raises additional possibilities in the face of the theory of Bourdieu, by listing the more critical topics, while acknowledging a number of still valid contributions from the bourdieusian perspective regarding the theory and social thought. Finally, this thesis addresses some current ways and possibilities of aesthetic judgment, by drawing a few political debates and highlighting how some practices are emblematic to reveal a series of aesthetic experiences in the day-to-day life of individuals.

This study aims to understand the divergent positions between the theory of social reproduction of Pierre Bourdieu and the theory of rational choices of Raymond Boudon. Theories involving the sociology of education are often placed at opposite poles in relation individual / society. On one side, the field of action subjectively motivated, rational individual choices, represented by Raymond Boudon, became known as methodological individualism. On the other hand, the inverse perspective, holistic, derived from macrosociological contexts related to the size of the collective structures represented by Bourdieu, known as structuring. In trying to understand the differences of these two theories, research is supported in methodologies related to bibliographic studies, as well as those pertaining to comparative studies of works and authors. To understand the theories of sociology of education, the approaches are preceded by a summary of the general history of western education, contextualized, where relevant, with the history of education in Brazil. Moreover, an itinerary is done in the history of sociology of education to a better understanding of its various currents. With this purpose is focused on the following: a) Identify and analyze the characteristics and contributions of each approach in the construction of modern conceptions of education; b) describe the most relevant findings of the traditions of social science research in education and c) understand the various currents of the field of sociology of education with its various aspects, in seeking to understand the "crisis" of educational paradigms.
O presente trabalho tem por objetivo compreender as posições divergentes entre a teoria da reprodução social de Pierre Bourdieu e a teoria das escolhas racionais de Raymond Boudon. As teorias que envolvem a sociologia da educação são colocadas frequentemente em polos opostos na relação indivíduo/sociedade. De um lado, o campo da ação subjetivamente motivada, das escolhas individuais racionais, representado por Raymond Boudon, tornou-se conhecido como individualismo metodológico. Por outro lado, a perspectiva inversa, holista, oriunda de contextos macrossociológicos relacionada à dimensão das estruturas coletivas, representada por Pierre Bourdieu, conhecida como estruturalismo. Na tentativa de compreender as divergências dessas duas teorias, a investigação está apoiada em metodologias relacionadas aos estudos bibliográficos, assim como àqueles concernentes aos estudos comparativos de obras e autores. Para o entendimento das teorias da sociologia da educação, as abordagens são antecedidas por uma síntese da história geral da educação ocidental, contextualizadas, quando pertinente, com a história da educação no Brasil. Ademais, é feito um itinerário pela história da sociologia da educação para uma melhor percepção de suas diversas correntes. Com esta finalidade é focalizado o seguinte: a) Identificar e analisar as características e contribuições de cada uma das abordagens na construção das concepções modernas sobre educação; b) descrever as descobertas mais relevantes das tradições de pesquisa em ciências sociais na área educacional e c) compreender as diversas correntes do campo da sociologia da educação com suas várias vertentes, na busca do entendimento das “crises” dos paradigmas educacionais.

This thesis contributes to discussion surrounding the importance of reflexivity in social theory and sociology by illustrating some of the paradoxes involved in the development of a reflexive social science. It does this by focusing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, arguably the main advocate of relexive sociology. It is argued that Bourdieu's emphasis on a 'science of practices' limits his ability to be completely relexive because it excludes moral reflexivity. This is ironic, given that Bourdieu believes that reflexivity increases scientificity. The thesis argues that Max Weber's work on religious rationalisation offers an insightful understanding of these paradoxes. His work reveals how and why Modernity witnessed a separation and tension between moral reflexivity and epistemological reflexivity. It also reveals, despite Weber's best efforts to do so, that such a paradoxical tension cannot be overcome. The thesis uses these insights to show the dilemmas and tensions facing any relexive sociology

At the end of the twentieth century, Pierre Bourdieu and Umberto Eco were two of the most prominent intellectuals in France and Italy. Yet, in spite of the fact that France and Italy are neighbouring countries and have been, historically, exercising an on-going cultural influence upon each other, there is no systematic comparative study of these two intellectuals. This study responds to this absence by offering, within the framework of an interdisciplinary project, a thorough analysis of some of the key themes of the thought of Bourdieu and Eco. By addressing how Bourdieu’s and Eco’s work contributes to a better understanding of the creative and the interdisciplinary nature of intellectuality, this study explores the following hypothesis: those scholars who become known to the general public as public intellectuals are often interested in exploring and in testing the limits of disciplinary fields. In so doing, they challenge the norms that define academic professionalism and the growing specialisation of knowledge in academia. By highlighting the differences, as well as the similarities in the approaches of Bourdieu and Eco, this study shows that critical engagement is defined by the very disciplinary boundaries and structures it attempts to challenge and question. This study demonstrates that interdisciplinarity does neither exclude nor render obsolete existing disciplines. On the contrary, solid grounding in one discipline facilitates the production of interdisciplinary knowledge. As the examples of Bourdieu and Eco show, disciplines can be transcended only once they are fully mastered. Once fully mastered they appear in their contingency, not as absolute statements but rather as vehicles towards knowledge.

Resumo: O presente trabalho teve por objetivo geral investigar e delimitar, com base em análise sociológica proposta na obra de Pierre Bourdieu, questões ligadas às formas de interação social presentes no sub-campo do esporte paraolímpico brasileiro. Os objetivos específicos apontam para três esferas presentes neste espaço: processos de formação, recrutamento e atuação de classificadores paraolímpicos, responsáveis pela alocação dos atletas em classes de disputa; a ocorrência do profissionalismo de atletas e formas de distribuição de recompensas financeiras e simbólicas; a presença e formas de atuação de pessoas com deficiência na gerência e administração de entidades organizativas do esporte paraolímpico brasileiro (federações, associações, comitês, entre outros). A metodologia de pesquisa deu-se com base em três momentos. O primeiro em análise de referencial teórico da obra de Pierre Bourdieu, ligado à sociologia do esporte, e posterior conformação e descrição de elementos constituintes do subcampo do esporte paraolímpico. O segundo em coleta de dados através de entrevistas pessoais e semi-estruturadas, com sujeitos atuantes em funções técnicas e/ou administrativas específicas do Comitê Paraolímpico Brasileiro (CPB), ligados, cada um deles, a uma das esferas de análise, na busca de informações ainda não documentadas a respeito destas vertentes. A terceira, na discussão dos dados com base na identificação e conformação do sub-campo em análise, associando as informações obtidas às categorias sugeridas por Bourdieu para a interpretação de interações entre sujeitos num determinado espaço social. A análise de dados foi baseada na divisão das informações coletadas em três grupos, ligados às esferas já descritas. Tem-se como resultado ligado à esfera de classificação: Tendência de profissionalização e busca por protocolos científicos mais abrangentes; Busca por melhor formação e especialização do classificador, a partir de democratização relativa do conhecimento específico; É um espaço de disputas, tanto pelo acesso ao conhecimento específico, quanto à legitimidade de classificação. Quanto à profissionalização: Financiamento principal de órgãos públicos; Relacionamento de aproximação com a mídia; Grande profissionalização de atletas, mas pequena de técnicos, classificadores e administradores; Quanto maior o capital simbólico (mérito esportivo), maior o capital econômico acumulado - modalidades individuais; Busca por reconhecimento do esporte paraolímpico como produto. E quanto à administração: Disputa política entre duas classes; Uso do esporte como forma de posicionamento político-social de pessoas com deficiência; Questão do capital cultural institucionalizado é um problema. Como resultado geral, tem-se que o esporte paraolímpico brasileiro é um espaço de disputas pelo controle das práticas esportivas, políticas e comerciais, próprias do esporte contemporâneo do século XXI. Mas que ainda está em processo de conformação e afirmação de posição na sociedade. E que depende tanto de ações internas, quanto externas a seus limites sociais, visto sua autonomia relativa frente à sociedade esportiva e brasileira em geral, e suas conformações e características sociais
Abstract: The present study aimed at investigating and defining the basis of sociological analysis proposed in the work of Pierre Bourdieu, issues related to forms of social interaction present in the sub-field of the Brazilian Paralympic sport. The specific objectives point to three spheres in this space: the process of training, recruitment and performance of classifiers paralympic athletes responsible for the allocation of classes in dispute, the occurrence of professional athletes and ways of distributing financial and symbolic rewards, and the presence and ways of working people with disabilities in management and administration of organizational entities of the Brazilian Paralympic sport (federations, associations, committees, among others). The research methodology was given based on three different occasions. The first analysis on the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu on the sociology of sport, and conformation and subsequent description of the elements of the sub-field of Paralympic sport. The second in data collection through personal interviews and semi-structured interviews with individuals working in technical functions and / or specific administrative Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPC), linked each to one of the areas of analysis, seeking not yet documented information about these aspects. The third, in the discussion of the data based on identification and conformation of the sub-field analysis, gathering the information obtained to the categories suggested by Bourdieu for the interpretation of interactions among individuals in a particular social space. Data analysis was based on the division of information collected in three groups linked to the spheres described above. Were highlighted data that point to the conformation of the objectified social space, based on information aggregated, denied or reinforced components previously presented in theoretical analysis of the Brazilian Paralympic sport. Thus contributing to the definition and understanding of the forms of social action of agents in this space. It has been as a result, the Brazilian Paralympic sport is an area of disputes over control of sports, political and business typical of the contemporary sports of the XXI century. But that is still in the process of conformation and position statement on society. And that depends, as already explained by the theory of Pierre Bourdieu's Fields, both from internal actions, and external to their social boundaries, since their relative autonomy against the Brazilian society and sports in general and their conformations and social characteristics

Este trabalho tem como objetivo traçar algumas aproximações entre conceitos-chave tramados por Pierre Bourdieu e a noção de “cultura escolar”. Em que medida tal noção se insere num todo maior, o qual poderia se chamar de “cultura”? A partir de uma breve revisão bibliográfica acerca de algumas noções do que seria ou poderia ser o conceito de cultura e de cultura escolar, somada à investigação de algumas obras de Pierre Bourdieu, especialmente “Os Herdeiros: os estudantes e a cultura” (2014), escrita em co-autoria com Jean Claude Passeron, além de alguns comentadores, a pesquisa sinaliza a pertinência do arcabouço teórico-conceitual forjado pelo autor para se analisar outros espaços escolares numa perspectiva que reconheça, em primeiro lugar, as desigualdades culturais e escolares e, consequentemente, a importância de um recorte analítico em termos de classes sociais.
This work aims to draw some approximations between key concepts coined by Pierre Bourdieu and the notion of "school culture". To what extent does such a notion fit into a larger whole, which could be called "culture"? From a brief bibliographical review about some notions of what the concept of culture and school culture would be or could be, together with the investigation of some works by Pierre Bourdieu, especially "Os Herdeiros: os estudantes e a cultura" (2014), written in co-authorship with Jean-Claude Passeron, in addition to some commentators, the research indicates the pertinence of the theoretical-conceptual framework forged by the author to analyze other school spaces in a perspective that recognizes, first, cultural and school inequalities and, consequently, the importance of an analytical cut in terms of social classes.

Un des enjeux principaux de cette these est de situer bourdieu dans une tradition philosophique de reflexion sur le corps, dont participent bergson, sartre, merleau-ponty et foucault, tradition qu'il ne fait en quelque sorte que prolonger. C'est dans cette philosophie du corps que reside la portee proprement philosophique de la notion bourdieusienne d'habitus, qui excede donc le champ purement sociologique. Ce qui nous semble en effet determinant dans son oeuvre a cet egard, c'est le statut reconnu au sujet, resultat d'une reflexion interessante sur le role de la subjectivite dans le champ social. Cette analyse philosophique s'accompagne bien evidemment chez bourdieu d'une etude serree des effets nefastes de l'habitus sur le tissu social, l'habitus etant alors considere comme le veritablevecteur de la domination. La portee politique de ce concept est indeniable. C'est en effet sur l'habitus que notre auteur axe sa reflexion sur la violence symbolique, violence qui ne s'exerce pas directement mais emprunte le masque de l'ideologie dominante. L'examen de cette notion, qui rappelle le concept marxiste d'alienation, sera pour nous l'occasion de traiter des relations ambigues que bourdieu entretient avec le marxisme, dont il partage l'ideologie sociale et la condamnation de l'exploitation mais non l'optimisme pour ce qui est de la possibilite de mettre fin a la domination des classes dominantes. Bourdieu ne croit pas en effet qu'il soit possible de mettre un terme au determinisme social reposant sur les habitus individuels, n'envisage pas, en d'autres termes, que le sujet puisse se defaire de l'inertie qu'implique l'habitus et sortir de l'etat d'alienation. A nos yeux, la plus grande lacune de son oeuvre est de ce fait l'absence d'une solution radicale, d'un veritable remede a ce qu'il appelle le <> dans son dernier ouvrage. Meditations pascaliennes. D'ailleurs, le seul fait de se reclamer de pascal est symptomatique de son refus de croire a une quelconque liberation et de la revendication d'un point de vue moral qui reste abstrait. This thesis contributes to discussion surrounding the importance of reflexivity in social theory and sociology by illustrating some of the paradoxes involved in the development of a reflexive social science. It does this by focusing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, arguably the main advocate of relexive sociology. It is argued that Bourdieu's emphasis on a 'science of practices' limits his ability to be completely relexive because it excludes moral reflexivity. This is ironic, given that Bourdieu believes that reflexivity increases scientificity. The thesis argues that Max Weber's work on religious rationalisation offers an insightful understanding of these paradoxes. His work reveals how and why Modernity witnessed a separation and tension between moral reflexivity and epistemological reflexivity. It also reveals, despite Weber's best efforts to do so, that such a paradoxical tension cannot be overcome. Em um mercado em constante crescimento, o tradutor de histórias em quadrinhos deve aplicar as mais variadas formas de conhecimento em seu trabalho. Conhecimento do par linguístico não é a única ferramenta de que ele necessita, mas de um vasto conhecimento nas mais variadas instâncias do saber e, acima de tudo, um domínio sobre o material com o qual está trabalhando. Na presente dissertação, analisamos a teoria do habitus de Pierre Bourdieu e sua influência direta nos tradutores de histórias em quadrinhos da Marvel Comics e DC Comics no Brasil através da análise de entrevistas realizadas e sua influência na escolha do uso de gírias na tradução. Tratamos das questões relativas à tradução contextualizada e não somente da transferência automática e impensada de palavras soltas de uma língua para outra (Milton, 2010). Analisamos o potencial da Tradução Descritiva (DTS), mais especificamente a Function Oriented DTS, como maneira de enfatizar elementos essenciais à tradução e às funções que elas representam em seus receptores analisando a influência sociocultural e o contexto em que o texto foi produzido (Holmes, 2000).
In a constantly growing market in, the translator of comics should apply the most varied forms of knowledge to his or her work. Knowledge of a language pair is not the only tool that he or she needs, but a vast knowledge in the most varied areas, and above all a familiarity with the material with which he or she is working. In the present thesis we analyze the theory of habitus of Pierre Bourdieu and its direct influence on comic book translators of Marvel Comics and DC Comics in Brazil through interviews analysis, and its influence on the choice of slang used in translation. Also the ability to handle all issues related to contextual translation and not only the automatic transfer of loose and thoughtless words from one language to another is examined (Milton, 2010). Furthermore, we analyze the potential of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS), specifically the \"Function Oriented DTS\" as a way to emphasize key elements in translation and the roles they represent in their receivers analyzing the sociocultural influence and the context in which the text was produced (Holmes, 2000).

This thesis explores the construction of technological expertise amongst a heterogenous group of New Zealand teenagers, specifically in regard to their home computer use, which for many of them is their primary site of leisure. This thesis explores the field in which these teenagers are positioned, and explains the practice constituting that field. In this field, the trajectories towards expertise are explained including the time, experimentation, and pleasure evident in their praxis. The qualitative study involved observations and interviews with eight teenagers aged 13 – 17. Five boys and three girls participated and each attended one of various secondary schools located within a provincial city in New Zealand. All of the participants considered themselves to be technological experts, and their peers and/or their family supported this comprehension. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s socio-cultural theories, the capital (cultural, economic, social) and habitus of the teenagers are described (habitus being what makes them who they are, and continues to define who they are in the future). Chapter five centres on explaining the field the teenagers have positioned themselves in, namely the field of out-of-school leisure and home computer use. It also explores the construction and performance of technological expertise within the field. Chapter six examines traditional views of schooling and expertise, and contrasts these views with what the teenagers think about their learning and expertise. This gap is specifically explained with regard to differences between the concepts and value of learning, expertise, and technology, and how they are recognised and valued differently between generations. Chapter seven explores the praxis that the participants exhibit, which is arguably misrecognized by those whose interests are in the established order (e.g. institutional, societal structures). The field they are placed in is arguably part of the broader field of education, yet the findings suggest their capital is misrecognized by digital newcomers, and therefore not legitimated. This thesis concludes that the gap between teenager and adult understandings of expertise is exacerbated in the digital world in which the teenagers position themselves. Their schooling is mainly positioned in the print culture of previous generations and consequently, in the lives of these teenagers, schooling has had little influence on the development of their technological expertise. Additionally, gender has had little impact in their development of expertise; therefore stereotypical notions of female underachievement as computer experts are contested.

This thesis attempts a critical examination of the work of the French ethnologist and sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu. It reads his work in the context both of the intellectual traditions within which and against which Bourdieu has elaborated his sociological theories, and of the socio-historical developments in postwar France which those theories have sought to describe and explain. Following the development of Bourdieu's thought chronologically and thematically, the thesis argues that his most important works have been centrally concerned with the analysis of a series of social and cultural changes contingent on France's transition to an era of late capitalism, an era characterised by decolonisation, the advent of mass consumerism, unprecedented expansion in the university sector and the consequent challenge to the humanist culture traditionally dispensed there, the waning of a once dominant Left-wing political discourse and its replacement by discourses of managerialism, business efficiency, and neo-liberalism. Hence, rather than analysing key Bourdieusian concepts such as 'practice', 'habitus', 'strategy'. `cultural capital'. and `field' in purely theoretical terms, this thesis will understand such concepts as explanatory tools which emerged in response to a particular historical conjuncture, questioning the contribution they might make to our understanding of that conjuncture. The French intellectual field, with its poles of attraction and repulsion, forms an integral part of that historical conjuncture and this thesis will, therefore, also examine how Bourdieu's approach defined itself in relation to the key protagonists in that field, analysing his debt to figures such as Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau- Ponty, Gaston Bachelard, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Karl Marx, as well as his more agonistic relationship with figures such as Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Frantz Fanon, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Whilst this thesis neither pretends to provide the definitive reading of Bourdieu's work nor claims that his work's significance is limited to the particular context in which it was produced, it does argue that a detailed understanding of that context forms the necessary precursor to any objective assessment of the work's strengths and weaknesses.

This thesis aims to investigate to what extent the concept of transhistoricity of scientific knowledge, according to Pierre Bourdieu, reverberates the presence of the philosophy of science on the occasion of the last course taught by him, entitled Science de la science et reflexivité, at the Collège de France in the university year 2000-2001. Bourdieu synthesizes, in this last course, the epistemological foundations of sociology and takes them as object of study, thus making a science of science. Avoiding the totalizing pretensions, Bourdieu proposes the concepts of habitus and field, elaborating a closed system of concepts that allows him the scientific self-reflexivity, specifically applied to the sociology. Assuming the French theoretical epistemological line of Bachelardian tradition, Bourdieu affirms that the scientific knowledge is transhistorical, that is to say, a social construct that has managed to make its transhistorical truth. Transhistoricity implies questioning the ways in which science is made, and this questioning is the central problem that P. Bourdieu's critical reflexivity takes as his starting point for his investigation of the production of scientific knowledge. Epistemological vigilance is the guarantee of the scientificity of sociology; it is certainty of the method appropriate to the specificities of the object, in this case the production of sociological knowledge. The thesis that underlies the problem investigated by Bourdieu in his last course - in what way does science produce transhistoric knowledge? – is evidence of the presence of a thinker, whose analyses reaches a wide spectrum of themes, however, it is in the game of the scientific field with the scientific habitus that is, if and only if, it is possible to speak of transhistoricity of scientific knowledge. Nesta tese, objetiva-se investigar em que medida o conceito de trans-historicidade do conhecimento científico, segundo Pierre Bourdieu, reverbera a presença da filosofia da ciência, na ocasião do último curso ministrado por ele, intitulado Science de La science et reflexivité, no Collège de France no ano universitário 2000-2001. Bourdieu sintetiza, nesse último curso, os fundamentos epistemológicos da sociologia e os toma como objeto de estudo, fazendo assim uma ciência da ciência. Evitando as pretensões totalizantes, propõe os conceitos de habitus e de campo, elaborando um sistema de conceitos fechado que lhe permite a autorreflexidade científica, em específico aplicado à sociologia. Assumindo a linha teórica epistemológica francesa de tradição bachelardiana, Bourdieu afirma que o conhecimento científico é trans-histórico, ou seja, um constructo social que conseguiu tornar sua verdade trans-histórica. A trans-historicidade implica questionar os modos como se faz ciência, e esse questionamento constitui o problema central que a reflexividade crítica de P. Bourdieu toma como ponto de partida para a sua investigação acerca da produção do conhecimento científico. A vigilância epistemológica é a garantia de cientificidade da sociologia, é certeza do método adequado às especificidades do objeto, no caso a produção do conhecimento sociológico. A tese que subjaz no problema investigado por Bourdieu em seu último curso – De que modo a ciência produz conhecimentos trans-históricos? – evidencia a presença de um pensador cujas análises alcançam um espectro amplo de temas; entretanto, é no jogo do campo científico, com o habitus científico que, se e somente se, torna-se possível falar de trans-historicidade do conhecimento científico. Em busca de uma elucidação maior sobre um conceito fulcral à sociologia contemporânea, o trabalho percorre uma trajetória exegética ao redor da idéia de habitus a partir da contribuição do sociólogo francês Pierre Bourdieu. Como um dos mais notáveis sociólogos no século XX, Bourdieu embalou toda sua obra, ainda profundamente influente nas ciências sociais, com o conceito de habitus como um compartimento individual onde ressoam ingerências externas ao agente, empreendendo um novo esforço na delimitação desta idéia já milenar nas ciências humanas. Ao estabelecer uma indecomponível relação onto-epistemológica entre habitus e campo, a sociologia bourdieusiana aponta novas balizas teóricas e empíricas para a investigação das relações entre as instâncias relativas às agências e às estruturas. O passo gnosiológico bourdieusiano encarnado no uso da noção de habitus se pretendeu credenciado para uma superação mais definitiva da miríade de dicotomias sociológicas mais de uma vez explicitada em oposições como objetivismo/subjetivismo e nominalimo/realismo, o que do ponto de vista do esquadrinhamento do indivíduo e/ou da sociedade consiste em acatar nuances variadas entre as duas esferas, sem necessariamente tomar partido por um dos dois pólos. Seguiu-se em paralelo a uma utilização por Bourdieu do conceito de habitus em diversas searas sociológicas, um debate portentoso acerca de quais instrumentos a análise sociológica deve se valer no processo científico de apreensão e compreensão da realidade. A pesquisa se fiou também na déia de habitus como um ponto primordial para um divisar de perspectivas teórico-analíticas entre várias das correntes fundamentais em ciências sociais, bem como entre os mais luminares expoentes de diversos momentos na sociologia, com os quais, inegavelmente, os quadros teóricos e empíricos delineados por Pierre Bourdieu dialogaram constantemente. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
In search of a wider elucidation, concerning a concept of basis to contemporary Sociology, the work goes through an exegetical way around the idea of habitus, from the contribution made by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Counted as one of the most remarkable sociologists th of the 20 Century, Bourdieu has established his work, which is still deeply influent in Social Sciences, in the concept of habitus as an individual compartment where interferences, external to the agent, reverberate, undertaking a new effort in the delimitation of this idea, already considered millenary in Human Sciences. By appointing an indissoluble onto-epistemological relation between habitus and field, the bourdieusian sociology indicates new theoretical and empirical boundaries for the investigation of the relation among the instances related to the agencies and structures. The bourdieusian gnosiological step, materialized in the utilization of the notion of habitus, has considered itself as able of overcoming, in a more definitive way, the infinity of sociological dichotomies, many times expressed in oppositions such as objectivism/subjectivism and nominalism/realism , which, if considered from the point of view of a detailed analysis of the individual and/or society, consists in regarding varied nuances between both spheres, without, necessarily, making common cause with any of them. Parallely to the use of the concept of habitus in many sociological parties by Bourdieu, there is a profuse debate about which instruments the sociological analysis should rely on, concerning the scientific process of perception and understanding of reality. The research also relies on the idea of habitus as a primordial concept for perceiving theoretical-analytical perspectives among the many fundamental tendencies in Social Sciences, as well as among the most illuminating exponents from different moments in Sociology, which, undeniably, keep a constant dialogue with the theoretical and empirical panoramas delineated by Pierre Bourdieu.

Pierre Bourdieu desenvolveu uma teoria consistente que propicia uma rica análise das questões educacionais sob uma perspectiva sociológica. O autor aponta principalmente para a desigualdade de oportunidades no sistema escolar em função do pertencimento a classes sociais, revelando a escola como um espaço de legitimação das desigualdades sociais em desigualdades escolares. Nesse sentido, o objetivo central deste trabalho consiste em mapear as apropriações e contribuições da teoria de Bourdieu na área de Educação em Ciências, fornecendo um quadro quantitativo, qualitativo e crítico dessa inserção. Como percurso metodológico utilizamos a pesquisa bibliográfica, por meio da qual investigamos a inserção da perspectiva bourdiana nas principais publicações da área de Educação em Ciências (evento, periódicos, dissertações e teses). O aporte teórico para análise dos trabalhos se constituiu no próprio referencial teórico de Bourdieu. No total consultamos 8478 trabalhos publicados no ENPEC (4797), em revistas (3194), além de dissertações e teses (487). Desse total, 160 compuseram o corpus da pesquisa, que foi classificado em três categorias: Menção incidental (69); Mobilização conceitual tópica (47); Apropriação do modo de trabalho (44). Aprofundamos o estudo da categoria Apropriação do modo de trabalho, a qual foi subdivida em três linhas temáticas: Sociologia da Ciência (12); Desempenho escolar/acadêmico e determinantes sociais (14); e Formação de Professores de Ciências (18). Os resultados, de modo geral, mostram que a apropriação do sociólogo ainda é tímida na área. Contudo, o conjunto analisado nos permite reconhecer suas contribuições para a área em relação às linhas de temáticas: a Sociologia da Ciência consegue, por meio do conceito de campo, avançar ao compreender a relação do microcosmo científico com o macrocosmo social, em que questões políticas, curriculares e institucionais podem ser mais bem compreendidas, fundamentando ações dos agentes no campo. A segunda linha aponta que o desempenho escolar e a aprendizagem de conceitos são fortemente influenciados pelo patrimônio dos agentes herdado da família quanto a aprendizagens específicas, hábitos e interesses. Deve, assim, ser objeto de análise do professor, visando minimizar as desigualdades escolares associadas às desigualdades sociais. A linha Formação de Professores de Ciências utiliza a noção de habitus para compreender a relação do social com o individual nos processos de formação, sendo possível planejar ações formativas com base nessa perspectiva teórica.
Pierre Bourdieu developed a consistent theory that provides a rich analysis of the educational issues from a sociological perspective. The author notes mainly to inequality of opportunity of the educational system due to the social classes belongingness, revealing the school as a legitimization space of the social inequalities in educational inequalities. Therefore, the central objective of this work is to map the appropriations and contributions of Bourdieu's theory in the area of Science Education, providing a quantitative, qualitative and critical picture of this insertion. As methodological approach we used the literature review, through which we investigate the insertion of Bourdieu's perspective on the main publications in Science Education area (event, journals dissertations and thesis). The theoretical background for analysis of the works was constituted by the theoretical framework of Bourdieu. It was totalized 8478 works consulted, including ENPEC (4797), journals (3194), dissertations and thesis (487). 160 of these documents constituted the research corpus, which was classified into three categories: Incidental mention (69); Topic conceptual mobilization (47); Appropriation of work mode (44). We investigated especially the category of Appropriation of work mode, which was subdivided into three thematic lines: Sociology of Science (12); Scholar performance and Social Determinants (14); and Science Teacher Formation (18). The results generally show that the appropriation of the sociologist is still shy on the area. However, the set analyzed allows us to recognize his contributions to the area in respect to the thematic lines: the sociology of science can, through the concept of field, advance to understand the relationship of the scientific microcosm with the social macrocosm, in which political issues, curriculum and institutional matters may be better understood, basing agent’s actions on the field. The second line indicates that the school performance and the learning of concepts are strongly influenced by the patrimony inherited from the family of the agents for specific learning, habits and interests. It should therefore be an object of teacher analysis to minimize school inequalities associated with social inequalities. The line of Science Teacher Formation uses the notion of habitus to understand the relationship of the social with the individual in the formation process, enabling the planning of the formation actions based on this theoretical perspective.

Följande rapport behandlar intervjuer av åtta svensklärares idéer om vad de känner sig måste ta hänsyn till i sina val av skönlitterära inslag i svenskämnet på gymnasieskolor i Stockholms norra kranskommuner. Undersökningen anlägger ett sociologiskt perspektiv på de praktiserade urvalstekniker som framförs och diskuterar intervjupersonernas upplevelser med utgångspunkt i Pierre Bourdieus teorier om kapital, habitus och fält. Resultatet av intervjuerna visar att pedagogernas litterära kanon genomgående utgår ifrån vem eleven är, vilket syfte undervisningen har, lärarens tidigare erfarenheter liksom dennes förväntningar på elevens tillgodogöranden av undervisningen. I efterord diskuteras eventuella konsekvenser av sådana strukturer och studien avslutas med förslag på vidare forskning.
The following report deals with eight Swedish teachers' ideas about what they feel they must take into account in their choice of literary fiction in the subject of Swedish in upper secondary schools in the northern municipalities surrounding Stockholm. The study applies a sociological perspective on the practiced techniques of selection that are raised and discussed by interviewees' and their experiences, based on Pierre Bourdieu's terminology of capital, habitus and field. The result of the interviews shows that teachers' literary repertoire is frequently related to who the student is, what purpose the education has, the teacher's past experiences as well as their expectations for what the student might benefit out of their teaching. In the afterword possible consequences of such structures are discussed and suggestions for further research conclude the report.

I Sveriges musikbransch råder det idag en skev fördelning mellan kvinnor och män på inflytelserika positioner. Den skeva könsfördelningen, där det på de beslutsfattande positionerna syns en tydlig manlig dominans har blivit starkt uppmärksammad de senaste åren, vilket väckt intresset för föreliggande studie. Studiens fokus ligger på de kvinnliga aktörer som har lyckats inta inflytelserika positioner. Syftet med studien är att få en förståelse för vilka faktorer som legat till grund för det inflytande dessa kvinnor erhållit. Utifrån det har forskningsfrågan: “Går det att se likheter och skillnader i respondenternas bakgrund, samt i den kunskap de har förvärvat som gör att de erhållit inflytande i musikbranschen?” därför formulerats. Studien är av kvalitativ metod och baseras på semi-strukturerade intervjuer med tio kvinnor som erhållit inflytande i musikbranschen. De intervjuade kvinnorna är i alfabetisk ordning: Cecilia Ancker, My Blomgren, Emelie Bååth, Marie Dimberg, Karin Gunnarsson, Helen McLaughlin, Theodora Nordqvist, Hilda Sandgren, Anna Sjölund och Lena Åberg Frisk. Utifrån studiens syfte används Pierre Bourdieus teori om fält, kapital och habitus för att undersöka vilket kapital som är av mest relevans då man intresserar sig för att erövra en inflytelserik position inom musikbranschen. Den empiri som erhållits påvisar att de kapital som anses mest viktiga för att nå en hög position är erfarenhet och sociala relationer. Vad samtliga respondenter har gemensamt, och som onekligen verkat för deras inflytelserika position de idag besitter, är den erfarenhet de ackumulerat. Analysen av empirin har lett till slutsatsen att vikten av erfarenhet och genomförande även är viktigare än en formell utbildning. Vad respondenterna vittnar om talar sitt klara språk: det sociala kapitalet blir en tillgång som förvaltas och omvandlas till en ökad kunskap, likt ett branschspecifikt utbildningskapital och är tillsammans med erfarenhetskapitalet de mest relevanta kapitalen för att erhålla inflytande i musikbranschen.
In today’s Swedish music industry, there is an uneven distribution of women and men among the influential positions. The male dominance in the industry has been highly debated in recent years, which brought the interest for this study. The study is therefore focused on females that have managed to occupy influential positions. The study aims to gain an understanding of the factors that enabled these women to obtain their influence in the music industry. Based on this purpose, our research question is "Is it possible to see similarities and differences among the respondents' backgrounds, and in their acquired knowledge, which has enabled their achieved power in the music industry?” The research takes a qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews with ten women who all hold influential positions in the music industry. The women interviewed are, in alphabetical order: Cecilia Ancker, My Blomgren, Emelie Bååth, Marie Dimberg, Karin Gunnarsson, Helen McLaughlin, Theodora Nordqvist, Hilda Sandgren, Anna Sjölund och Lena Åberg Frisk. Based on the study's purpose, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of field, capital and habitus is used as a theoretical framework to explore which capital is of most relevance when one is interested in acquiring an influential position in the music industry. The empirical data obtained shows that the capital considered most important for achieving an influential position is practical experience and social networking. Accumulating practical experience is a common trait among all respondents. The analysis of empirical data has led us to the conclusion that the importance of experience and execution is more important than formal education in the field. The respondents’ testimonials all conclude: The capital of social networking is an asset that is converted into knowledge; knowledge that is particularly important within the music industry, and can be considered an industry specific education. The capital of social networking, combined with practical experience, is the most relevant capital in order to obtain influence in the music industry.

No Estado moderno se, por um lado, parece intrínseca a uma ordem jurídica a sua pretensão coercitiva em relação aos diferentes aspectos da vida social, resta evidente que tal ordem deve ser dotada de um atributo de autoridade que lhe garanta primazia em relação a outras ordens (morais, religiosas, pessoais), para que se justifique dotá-la de atributos tão singulares como a coercitividade. A essa autoridade, contudo, no contexto democrático - mais especificamente no contexto do Estado Democrático de Direito contemporâneo - cumpre dotar-se de uma legitimidade ou, ao menos, uma aparência de legitimidade suficiente para imprimir efetividade àquela autoridade. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho busca redefinir, a partir da perspectiva bourdieuniana, a percepção dos principais argumentos de legitimidade e autoridade do Direito - visto não só enquanto ordenamento jurídico, mas principalmente a partir de sua produção no ambiente legislativo, tantas vezes ignorada pela doutrina jurídica que habitualmente toma o direito posto, já legislado, como ponto de partida, neutralizando as disputas do subcampo legislativo e ignorando, em ampla medida, a questão da legitimidade da produção normativa. A pesquisa demonstra, a partir da perspectiva da Teoria da Reprodução Social de Bourdieu & Passeron (1992) que coloca em cheque toda legitimidade, que é aqui vista como mero efeito de uma autoridade, como a própria democracia é um conceito em disputa, e que a legitimidade das ações legislativas, bem como a dos próprios agentes legislativos não pode ser pressuposta.
If, in modern State, the coercive pretension seems intrinsic to the legal order in respect to all the different aspects of social life, it is also evident that such an order must have an authority which guarantees its primacy over other (such as moral, religious or personal orders), so that we are able to justify its singular attributes. To this authority, however, in the democratic context of contemporary State (under the Rule of Law), we must also have at least a notion of legitimacy, enough to give effectiveness to that authority. In this context, the present work seeks to redefine, from the perspective of Bourdieu\'s theory, the perception of the main arguments to law\'s legitimacy and authority - especially in aspects of the legislative work, usually overseen by juridical doctrine that takes law for granted, neutralizing the disputes in legislative field and ignoring to some extent the different critics to legislative legitimacy. Our research demonstrates, from the perspective of the Social Reproduction Theory, developed by Bourdieu & Passeron (1992) and which questions all legitimacy, seen as mere effect of authority, how democracy itself is a concept in dispute, and that the legitimacy of the legislative actions, and that of its agents, can\'t be taken for granted.

Nous nous proposons, dans ce travail, de faire la description des discours et des genres scientifiques et politiques issus de l’oeuvre de Pierre Bourdieu. L’un des principaux objectifs consiste à recomposer les réseaux sémantiques (d’oppositions et d’associations) qui donnent sens aux concepts disciplinaires chez Bourdieu (sociologie, sociologue, champ). Suivant une perspective diachronique et comparative, l’analyse du corpus porte sur les fluctuations et les conservations de sens selon plusieurs variables : discours (scientifique vs politique), genre (article vs intervention), auteur (Bourdieu vs classiques ; Bourdieu vs contemporains français) et période diachronique (intervalle de 40 ans). Les descriptions sémantiques portent aussi sur des procédés stylistiques et rhétoriques visant l’élaboration des concepts et la construction des argumentaires. Les conséquences sur le plan dialogique nous font finalement entrevoir l’articulation entre les discours mais surtout la constance d’une sémantisation exclusive du Sociologue
In this dissertation, we consider how scientific and political discourses and genre are constructed in the work of Pierre Bourdieu. We mainly focus on major actors like Sociologue and Sociologie and the way they are semantically constructed. We also analyze specific concepts (champ, espace social, etc. ). It allows us to apprehend the most significant changes and stabilities according to several variables like discourses (scientific vs political), genres (article vs intervention), authors (Bourdieu vs classics and contemporary French sociologists) and time (40 years of textual production). Our findings show the consequences of such semantical constructions and their rhetorical impact on scientific dialogue (mainly based on restriction and exclusion) and finally, on the meaning of being a committed sociologist

Neste estudo, objetivou-se correlacionar a produção científica de Enfermagem acerca do cuidado à criança em creches, com o capital científico, cultural, social, econômico e simbólico que tal produção confere no campo da Enfermagem. Para tanto, analisaram-se as teses e dissertações produzidas no Brasil no período de 1993 a 2002, utilizando-se a corrente interpretacionista e a abordagem qualitativa. Adotaram-se as concepções bourdieusianas como referencial teórico-filosófico e a hermenêutica dialética proposta por Minayo (1999), como referencial metodológico. Coletaram-se os dados por meio de consulta ao catálogo "Informações sobre pesquisas e pesquisadores em Enfermagem divulgado pelo CEPEn (2001)" e acessando a página da ABEn Nacional. Duas (0,7%) das teses e oito (0,9%) das dissertações referiam-se a essa temática, o que demonstrou sua pequena representatividade no universo da produção científica dos cursos de mestrado e doutorado em Enfermagem. Empregou-se como recurso técnico a análise de conteúdo na modalidade temática, adotando-se os critérios de relevância e repetição para a seleção das categorias empíricas. Nessa etapa, procurou-se apreender o cuidado de Enfermagem à criança em qualquer de suas dimensões. As categorias analíticas campo, habitus e capital foram selecionadas a priori. Da categoria campo, evidenciou-se que a produção científica analisada atende aos pressupostos que regem o campo da Enfermagem e está predominantemente fundamentada em referenciais e teorias de outros campos do saber. Da categoria habitus, apreendeu-se que o cuidado à criança em creches interfere na incorporação de habitus primários. Dessa forma, as creches constituem espaços privilegiados de promoção de saúde pela possibilidade de contato diário com a família e prolongado com a criança, o que oportuniza uma complementaridade das ações realizadas na creche e no lar. Apreendeu-se, ainda, que, dependendo da proposta pedagógica da instituição, podem ser gerados nas crianças habitus indicativos de submissão ou de cidadania. As manifestações do habitus de classe efetuaram-se por meio da capacitação para o cuidado, para o autocuidado, e para o cuidado de si. Na categoria capital, a falta de clareza quanto as funções da creche demonstrou dificultar a construção de capital científico específico para atuação neste cenário. Investigando-se as qualidades formal e política na produção científica analisada, identificou-se que, embora haja algumas fragilidades metodológicas, a qualidade política se fez presente. Exteriorizou-se pelo compromisso da Enfermagem com a promoção de saúde e qualidade de vida em nível individual e coletivo, bem como com as políticas públicas visando a intensificar a articulação dos campos da saúde e da educação. Constatou-se, ainda, a falta de um eixo político que representasse o compromisso profissional, social e ético da Enfermagem, com as crianças que freqüentam creches.

O presente trabalho investiga as relações de forças entre os diversos agentes do campo musical brasileiro durante a década de sessenta, analisada a partir de observações históricas e relatos da época, em confluência com as teorias dos campos e do mercado de bens simbólicos de Pierre Bourdieu, trazendo essas teorias para o estudo de música popular no Brasil. Abordam-se as mudanças do habitus no campo da MPB e de que forma essas mudanças, a partir do advento da Bossa Nova, permitiram o surgimento e a ascensão de novos estilos musicais, por vezes contrastantes como a Canção de Protesto, o Iê, iê, iê e, finalmente e principalmente, o Tropicalismo, apontando aspectos como luta pela hegemonia, estratégias de tomada de poder, relações entre dominantes e dominados, dinâmica do campo e capitalização de bens simbólicos. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida através de uma extensa pesquisa bibliográfica em material original e historiográfico, além de grande parte da bibliografia sociológica de Bourdieu. O trabalho busca entender de que forma essas mudanças na teia musical brasileira permitiram o surgimento de um estilo único e mutante como o Tropicalismo, capaz de agregar todos os outros surgidos antes e os posteriores a ele, mantendo praticamente intacta a estrutura de supremacia e acumulação de capital simbólico de seus principais fundadores, Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil. A pesquisa procura uma nova abordagem sobre a História da Música Popular Brasileira, sob um ponto de vista alternativo, o que pode se configurar como uma forma para se entender o desenvolvimento da cultura de massas no Brasil.
This work aims to investigate the power struggle between the various agents in the Brazilian musical scene in the sixties, analyzing it from historical observations and accounts from the period studied in conjunction with Pierre Bourdieu’s market and field theories on symbolic goods and bringing these theories together to study the Brazilian Popular Music (MPB). The changes in the habitus in the MPB scene, as well as how those changes took place since Bossa Nova entered the music world, made the arrival and ascent of new - and sometimes opposing - musical genres possible, such as the Canção de Protesto (Protest Song), the Iê, Iê, Iê and, finally and especially, Tropicalism, pointing out aspects like struggle for predominance, strategies to take over control, relationships between oppressors and the oppressed, field dynamics, and capitalization of symbolic goods. The research was carried out by means of an extensive bibliographical survey of original and historical material, as well as a great deal of Bourdieu’s sociological work. The intent of this dissertation is to understand how those changes in the Brazilian musical “web” enabled the emergence of a unique and continuously changing style like the Tropicalism, a style capable of absorbing all others, which came before and after it, but keeping the structure of its supremacy and the accumulation of symbolic goods of its main founders - Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil - unchanged. The research seeks a new approach to the History of Popular Brazilian Music, in an alternate light, which may become a way of understanding the development of mass culture in Brazil.

Die Magisterarbeit (im Studiengang Soziologie an der Universität Potsdam) knüpft an Beate Krais’ Gedankengang an, wonach durch die unreflektierte Präsenz des Parsonschen Rollenkonzepts innerhalb der (soziologischen) Theorie, theoretische Gegensätze von Individuum und Gesellschaft, Natur und Kultur, Körper und Geist, Irrationalismus und Rationalismus etc. konzeptionell reformuliert werden. Auf dieser strukturellen Grundlage, so Krais’ kritische Stoßrichtung, legitimiere auch die Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung nur wieder überkommene Stereotypen über Geschlechterrollen (Gender) innerhalb moderner, ausdifferenzierter Gesellschaften. Grundlegender jedoch werde so die Vorstellung eines natürlich gegebenen Unterschieds zwischen ‚zwei’ Geschlechtern (Sex) begründet. Feministische Theorie, so Regine Gildemeisters und Angelika Wetterers sozialkonstruktivistisch fundierte Betrachtung, konterkariere auf diesem Wege gerade ihren eigenen Anspruch, das Ideologem: „Biologie als Schicksal“ als solches zu entlarven. In theoretisch-methodischer Konsequenz vollziehe man vielmehr eine problematische Positivierung des Geschlechterdualismus. In Überwindung dieser Problematik sind zwei Richtungen theoretischer Entwicklung erkennbar. Einerseits wird im Anschluss an neuere modernistische bzw. poststrukturalistische Argumentationen die Möglichkeit einer kritisch orientierten Sozial- bzw. Geschlechterforschung grundsätzlich bezweifelt. Andererseits wird an dieser Stelle aber auch der paradigmatische Übergang von der Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung zur Geschlechterverhältnisforschung expliziert, welcher die für das feministische Projekt grundlegende Verbindung wissenschaftlicher und kritischer Ambitionen neu reflektiert und im Anspruch auf eine integrative, gendersensible Sozialwissenschaft forschungsstrategisch neu ausrichtet. Mit der Betrachtung der Soziologie Pierre Bourdieus tritt der Diskussion eine theoretische Position hinzu, die in eigener Weise Schwachstellen und Einseitigkeiten postmoderner und postfeministischer Ansätze herausstellt. Auf der Grundlage einer praxeologischen Theorie zeigen sich aber auch besondere Affinitäten zum feministischen Diskurs. Über eine Theorie der symbolischen Gewalt verdeutlicht Bourdieu, wie die Kategorie ‚Geschlecht’ in der sozialen Praxis der Akteure immer wieder konstruiert wird (doing gender). Gleichwohl verweist er, über bisherige Erkenntnisse hinausgehend, auf die soziale Mächtigkeit dieser Kategorie innerhalb der Dialektik sozialer und symbolischer Strukturen. Gegen die Kritik, die im deutschsprachigen Raum von Seiten der Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung an Bourdieus Buch: „Die männliche Herrschaft“ (1997) geübt wurde, versucht die Arbeit einer vorschnellen Lesweise und Aburteilung des Bourdieuschen Werks durch eine evaluative Betrachtung seiner soziologischen Konzepte im Hinblick auf die Herausforderungen feministischer Theorie und Kritik entgegenzuwirken.
The Master’s thesis, written in sociology at the University of Potsdam, focuses on Beate Krais’ criticism of Women and Gender Studies which claims that because of the unreflected presence of Parson’s concept of social roles theoretical oppositions as there are the individual and society, nature and culture, body and mind, irrationalism and rationalism etc. are conceptionally reformulated. This legitimates not only stereotypes of gender roles within modern, differentiated societies but more fundamentally justifies the notion of a natural given difference between ‘two’ sexes. Hence Regine Gildemeister und Angelika Wetterer argue that feminist theory does not do justice to its demand which is to reveal the view of “biology as destiny” as an ideological notion. The consequence is that in a theoretical and methodical way, feminism exercises a problematic affirmation of the gender dualism. There are two types of theoretical developments trying to overcome these contradictions of feminism. On the one hand, following new modernistic or poststructural argumentations, the possibility of a critically orientated Approach to Social and Gender Study is called into question. On the other hand, one can observe the paradigmatic transition from Women and Gender Studies to Gender Relation Studies which not only rethink the connection of academic and critical ambitions but also articulate the demand of an integrative, gendersensitive Social Science instead of reserving an academic niche any longer. The theory of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu adds to the discussion by pointing out the limits of postmodern and postfeministic theoretical approaches. Nevertheless, within the frame of a praxeological theory, particular affinities to the feminist discourse are apparent. Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence understands ‘gender’ as a relational term. However, by going far beyond given insights, Bourdieu reveals this notion to be a powerful social category within a dialectical framework of social and symbolic structures. Trying to oppose to the criticism that representatives of Women and Gender Studies have articulated towards Bourdieu’s work: “Die männliche Herrschaft” (1997), this Master’s thesis intends to counteract a superficial reading and sentencing of Bourdieu’s work by offering an evaluative and reflective consideration of his sociological concepts in terms of feminist demands and challenges.

Based on qualitative interviews, this paper explores how classical children's concerts serve as a means of "social distinction" (Bourdieu) for upper class families. Firstly, the paper presents a description of Vienna's children's concert scene for classical music and elaborates on Bourdieu's cultural-sociological approach. Secondly, the interrelation between knowledge about music and the accumulation of cultural capital, which emphasizes an individual's position in social space (Bourdieu), is investigated. The empirical data show that only children whose parents possess relatively high amounts of cultural and economic capital attend children's concerts. By taking their children to those cultural events, parents not only aim to convey a certain "taste in music" to them. They also support the accumulation of cultural knowledge or capital, which serve as a means of social distinction that asserts the family's position in society.
