The present times are full of various challenges, as it always used to be. Having in mind the rapid development of science and technology, we inevitably find ourselves under their influence. Thus, technology not only makes our life easier, but is also capable of shaping human perception in new obstacles. It can influence our choices and responsibility beyond them. Such a dynamic rate of producing new ideas and technology does not allow a proper and forehanded evaluation of their response in our near future. Since philosophers work with relatively constant terms, they have to be in the avant-gardé of a conceptual analysis and problem-shaping of the challenges facing modern people. In such circumstances, lecturing philosophy should hold a prominent position. The sphere of morals and ethical evaluations forms value basis for human self-cognition and performs as a stimulus to a more responsibly deliberated life. In this situation, a philosopher finds himself in a crucial role as a person, who provides this knowledge. The use of philosophical means has to start with the analysis of those, who are in charge of their usage. In order to remain frank with the audience and himself, a philosopher should start lecturing from himself, his self-cognition, as well as from a clear deliberation of his personal moral guidelines and personal responsibility. The situation, in which a philosopher shapes his personal ideas, formulates concepts, analyses, and provides arguments without proper elaboration of their premises and basic principles, raises concerns. Within the scope of this article we attempt to designate the term “philosopher” and philosopher’s position in the modern world. In order to articulate this term properly, we suggest a distinction in terminology between “philosophers of aim” and “philosophers of purpose”, which serves as a marker to estimate philosophic activities in their full scope. In my opinion, any philosophic activities, in their basis, perform as a practice of essential responsibility. The abovementioned definitions provide us with an ability to notice a distinction between philosophers and pseudo-philosophers, as well to evaluate the importance of the ones and the perniciousness of the others.

I first argue that, contrary to many atheistic philosophers, there is good reason to think the typical theistic philosopher’s retaining of her theism when faced with the Problem of Evil (PoE) is comparatively epistemically upstanding even if both atheism is true and the typical theistic philosopher has no serious criticism of the atheist’s premises in the PoE argument. However, I then argue that, contrary to many theistic philosophers, even if theism is true, the typical theistic philosopher has no good non-theistic reasons for rejecting any of the atheist’s premises, and she has good non-theistic reasons in favor of the atheist’s premises. In that respect, it’s extremely difficult for the theistic philosopher to respond to the PoE in an informative, non-question-begging way. I close by considering whether theistic philosophers should reject my second thesis.

Leon Craig's five books are interrelated by a common approach: Craig writes of philosophic matters juxtaposing them with literary works, or one may reverse the order—whichever way, the exegesis proceeds in tandem. Moreover, he has intertwined the books in a sequential development. One can perceive Craig discovered his fountainhead in Plato. His first book, in 1993, The War Lover: A Study of Plato's “Republic,” has left its genetic pattern upon the next four, Of Philosophers and Kings: Political Philosophy in Shakespeare's “Macbeth” and “King Lear” (2001), The Platonian Leviathan (2010), Philosophy and the Puzzles of “Hamlet” (2014), and his latest, The Philosopher's English King: Shakespeare's “Henriad” as Political Philosophy (2015). In this latest effort, Shakespeare is the philosopher and Henry V the best of Shakespeare's English kings. But you will not appreciate the extent and intricacy of Craig's web unless you recognize that Plato's thought, especially as that thought has been conveyed in The Republic, runs through every filament. To be precise, taking such themes of that dialogue as Socrates's notion of a tripartite human soul, his taxonomy of defective regimes, his all but best regime of “Guardians,” and Socrates's ultimately best constitution, rule by a philosopher become king or king become philosopher, or only somewhat less improbably, a king become an understanding student of a counselor philosopher. Then, best self-government within the individual soul is likewise worked out in The Republic as Craig reads it. To my mind he has read Plato aright.

One of the ways of dividing all philosophers into two kinds is by saying of each whether he is an ordinary man's philosopher or a philosophers' philosopher. Thus Plato is a philosophers' philosopher and Aristotle an ordinary man's philosopher. This does not depend on being easy to understand: a lot of Aristotle's Metaphysics is immensely difficult. Nor does being a philosophers' philosopher imply that an ordinary man cannot enjoy the writings, or many of them. Plato invented and exhausted a form: no one else has written such dialogues. So someone with no philosophical bent, or who has left his philosophical curiosity far behind may still enjoy reading some of them.

Existe-t-il des philosophies qui ne puissent être subsumées sous la catégorie de la « philosophie de terrain »? N’est-ce pas un anachronisme que d’installer dans l’ordre de la « philosophie de terrain » une entreprise qui ne s’est jamais conçue de cette manière ? Cet article fait l’hypothèse que l’herméneutique critique de Paul Ricœur pourrait soutenir la proposition d’être pensée comme une « philosophie de terrain », mais en en précisant les contours. En effet, Paul Ricœur conçoit la tâche de philosopher comme un dialogue avec les questions du temps, le philosophe « allant sur le terrain ». D’autre part, sa philosophie travaille à expliciter les conditions ontologiques, phénoménologiques et épistémologiques grâce auxquelles la philosophie travaille avec les sciences humaines et leurs « terrains » sans s’y dissoudre. Dans la dialectique entre « sol » (Grund) et terrain, cette herméneutique critique invite à ne pas confondre la question ontologique du sol de l’existence avec les questions méthodologiques liées à la constitution d’un terrain de recherche.

Abstract This paper addresses the responsibilities of philosophers. It distinguishes philosophers by profession, philosophers as a type of person playing a social role by doing philosophy, and philosophers without any professional or social role as a philosopher. It criticizes and rejects the internal goods view of philosophers’ responsibilities, according to which a philosopher’s only responsibility as a philosopher is to do ‘good’ philosophy. It examines the responsibilities of philosophy professors and the role of philosophy teaching in liberal education, criticizing the implications of the internal goods view for university missions and commenting on related deficiencies of the Code of Conduct of the American Philosophical Association. The central conclusions are that philosophers should accept responsibilities to do philosophy in the public interest and to adopt a cross-disciplinary and collaborative stance toward their role in educating students in the forms of understanding and judgment that will best equip them for life and citizenship.

Plutarch, in his Life of Alexander and his speeches On the Fortune or Virtue of Alexander the Great, draws a portrait of a philosopher-king, inspired by Plato, Aristotle and Diogenes’ philosophies. This paper aims to analyse the dialogues between these philosophers and Alexander and to scrutinise the Macedonian’s political path whereby philosophical ideals were put in action. This study, therefore, may suggest that whilst in the encomiastic speeches Plutarch draws a king, enlightened by Philosophy, who made happier «all the inhabited earth», in the biography, contradictions of imposing a ‘blessed life’ are unveiled.

A associação que procuramos fazer entre a linguagem na filosofia de Nietzsche e a idéia do termo grego phármakon nos apareceu quando da leitura de O Nascimento da Tragédia. Segundo Nietzsche, a origem da tragédia se deu na busca de realizar a união da embriaguez com a lucidez, numa experiência de simultaneidade dos impulsos artísticos apolíneo e dionisíaco. É nesse ponto que, para ele, se configura a função terapêutica da linguagem, como o principal elemento apolíneo a incorporar os impulsos dionisíacos através da união e harmonização do texto com a música. Mas por outro lado, Nietzsche atribui a Sócrates a responsabilidade pela decadência da arte trágica por meio da influência sobre Eurípides, traduzida na supervalorização da linguagem frente à música em suas peças, com a conseqüente perda da tensão dramática e da força artística, em virtude de uma maior clareza intelectual da história representada. O que para Nietzsche acaba por se tornar um veneno que veio a matar a tragédia antiga. Ou seja, a problematização nietzschiana acerca da origem e ocaso da tragédia sugere a idéia de que a primeira investida do racionalismo sobre a cultura grega se deu justamente sobre o domínio da linguagem. O nosso objetivo no presente trabalho é ampliar a análise de Nietzsche a respeito do papel da linguagem no nascimento e ocaso da tragédia grega a todo o percurso de sua filosofia, e com isso fazer uma releitura do seu pensamento a partir da sua concepção acerca da linguagem.
This thesis associates language in Nietzsche`s philosophy with the Greek concept of phámakon. In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche claims tragedy was born when drunkenness and soberness were combined in one art form that was driven simultaneously by Apollonian and Dionysian artistic drives. In this context, language, an Apollonian element, has a therapeutical function - it integrates Dionysian drives and get music and text together harmoniously. In spite of this, Nietzsche blames Socrates` influence on Euripides for the death of tragedy. The Greek playwright emphasized language and rationality over music in his plays, losing dramatic tension and artistic power. It turned into the poison that ultimately exterminated ancient tragedy. Therefore, Nietzsche argues that the first rationalist assault over Greek culture was made through language. In this thesis, we try to broaden Nietzsche analysis about the role of language on the birth and death of Greek tragedy, studying his works from his ideas about language.

Il s'agira d'établir une passerelle entre les Nouvelles Pratiques Philosophiques, telles qu'elles se développent aujourd'hui et le milieu universitaire, afin de donner aux étudiants en philosophie un débouché professionnel autre que l'enseignement académique ou la recherche. Il apparaît en effet que le manque de débouchés professionnels pour la philosophie en France, en dehors de l'enseignement et de la recherche universitaire, explique en partie la désaffection des étudiants pour cette matière et que celle-ci aurait tout intérêt à s'ouvrir à des pratiques professionnelles qui répondent aujourd'hui à une véritable demande de la part du grand public et dont le principal intérêt est de fournir un outil pertinent d'éducation populaire
The objective of this work is twofold: to contribute to the theory of the so-called New Philosophical Practices, on one hand, and provide methodological support to those working or wish to engage in this discipline , the other. It will establish a bridge between the New Philosophical Practices, as they are now developing and academia, to give philosophy students an outlet other than professional academic teaching or research. It appears that the lack of professional opportunities for philosophy in France, apart from teaching and academic research, partly student disaffection for this matter and that it would do well to open for business practices that today meet a real demand from the public and whose primary interest is to provide relevant public education tool

The article covers the religious conception in the work of the famous American philosopher Richard Rorty. The author emphasises the secular and finalist views of R. Rorty on the nature of religion, and on the philosopher’s gradual perception of the need for their creative reinterpretation due to the actualisation of the role of religion in intellectual and political spheres. The article uncovers two fundamental constituents of Richard Rorty’s religious philosophy. The first of them is associated with R. Rorty’s perception of the ‘weak thinking’ concept in the writings of Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo. R. Rorty holds ‘weak thinking’ and ‘kenosis’ to be the key to understanding the possibility of religion in the postmodern era. The second aspect concerns the existence of religion in the public space. Here the distinction between ‘strong’ narratives and ‘weak’ thinking correlates with the politically significant distinction between ‘strong’ religious institutions and private (parish, community) religious practice. Rorty believes that the activity of ‘strong’ religious structures threatens liberal ‘social hope’ on the gradual democratisation of mankind. The article concludes that Richard Rorty’s philosophy of religion presents an original conception of religion in the context of modern temporal humanism; the concept positively evaluates religious experience to the extent that it does not become a basis for theoretical and political manipulations on the part of ‘strong’ religious institutes.

Engineers like to solve problems. But they tend to like to solve problems that have discrete solutions. As long as they know which formulae apply, the rest is a matter of calculation. When philosophers teach ethics, they often take an approach that seems antithetical to the engineer's methods of solving problems: ethicists teach in terms of "ill-defined problems." For the purposes of this essay, I will assume that it has been fairly well established that engineering students should take an ethics course as part of their curriculum. Having said that, should engineers suffer through an ethics course taught by a philosopher? Or should engineers teach engineering ethics? Should engineering students get a tailored version of the course offered by the philosophy department?

The Argentine poet Hugo Mujica opens, from his poetic saying, a door towards the abyss and the desert, towards the limit of language and silence. We can glimpse in his poetry Heidegger’s legacy and, together with the philosopher, the Master Eckhart is also dragged from his going to God without god. From the interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, theology and poetry, we will approach to decipher this influence that transforms the saying of the poet-philosopher and updates his word in the desert and plunges us into the mystery of the unspeakable.

The article considers the ideas of the Russian philosopher V. V. Rozanov in the context of the topic of intercultural interaction. Using the example of his travel essays of 1905–1910, united under the general «German impressions», it is shown that the philosopher forms a view of the country not only through a dialogue of cultures (Russian and German; Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant), but also through a «dialogue of consciousnesses». The philosopher’s reflections on the «German spirit» as the ground of «possible «hegemony» are also of interest. In these essays V. V. Rozanov demonstrates the possibilities of the empathy method as one of the tools for the formation of intercultural sensitivity and appears as a researcher who is sensitive to the character of peoples and the «spirit of the place».

Denken und Poetik des ukrainischen Philosophen H. Skovoroda werden durch das Konzept der philosophia perennis, der einen Weisheit zu verschiedenen Zeiten als Teilhabe an der göttlichen Weisheit lesbar. Dieser Kontext ermöglicht die kohärente Lektüre seiner Schriften und erklärt die Form, in der sich sein Leben abgespielt hat. Nach einer kurzen Einordnung in die Forschung werden Skovorodas Leben und Denken im Kontext von Freimaurertum und Aufklärung betrachtet. Dem schließt sich der Aufruf der Tradition der philosophia perennis an, die eine stimmige und alle Aspekte umfassende Deutung seiner Texte ermöglicht. Besondere Beachtung erfordern dabei der Gottesbegriff und die Bildtheorie der philosophia perennis, die systematisch Analogie und Typologie realisieren und damit alle Denkfiguren, Bilder, Wissenssysteme, Texte und Aussagen derselben Struktur einordnen. Dadurch kann das Konzept der göttlichen Weisheit als Paradigma der philosophia perennis-Tradition in den Schriften Skovorodas wahrgenommen werden. Diese Tradition erklärt, wie Skovoroda Philosophie, Theologie und Poetik als konsequente Teilhabe an der göttlichen Weisheit konzipiert und alles als ein Bild Gottes behandelt und begründet. Die Eigenschaften des Denkens von Skovoroda zeigen die von ihm in seinen Schriften und Aussagen geforderte und praktizierte Poetik und Hermeneutik als eine Realisierung der Zeichenhaftigkeit der Welt als Bild und Spur Gottes im Medium der Sprache. Skovorodas Welterklärung entfaltet sich nach dem Vorbild der Bibel in ihrer christlich-allegorisch-typologischen Auslegungstradition. The purpose of the research is to outline the structure of the main methodological ideas within the frames of interpretive thinking in the essay of the famous Vistnyk’s writer, critic and essayist Yevhen Malaniuk. Considering the purpose and tasks of the studio, an interdisciplinary methodological base, related to the author’s “national approach”, has been worked out. The epistemological potential of national philosophy as a philosophy of national existence, national science as a theory of nation, hermeneutics as a theory and practice of interpretation and post-colonialism as interpretation of cultural phenomena from the standpoint of anti- and post-imperial consciousness are used in the work. The scientific novelty is that on the basis of the previous hermeneutic generalization and definition of national-existential methodology, a propaedeutic outlining of the structure of national-philosophical concepts within the frames of the essayistic interpretation of reality in Ye. Malaniuk is proposed. In the methodological sense, the writer’s essayism is structured by such concepts as nation-centrism, idealism, voluntarism, heroism, and can be considered as one of the variants (close by the experiences of D. Dontsov, Yu. Lypa, M. Mukhyn, etc.) of the Vistnyk’s national-philosophical (national-existential, nationalistic or nation-centric) hermeneutics, that is, the way of understanding, which the author by himself outlined as a “national approach”. The support of Ye. Malaniuk as a culture-philosopher and exegete on the eternal nation-centric values and criteria in his essayistic studies makes his reflections not only historically interesting, but also theoretically productive, classically important for the development of modern Ukrainian hermeneutics and humanities in general.

The words of ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu make the simplest, yet most profound, case for transformation – a change of direction, a fundamental shift in the nature or character of something, recasting the existing order and ways of doing things. This is what the world needs now, as institutions and systems of the past century prove unable to address the challenges of impending planetary disaster, persistent poverty, pandemics, rising fundamentalism and authoritarianism, wars, and everyday violence. Against a background of a worldwide backlash against women’s rights, gender parity in leadership positions – in legislatures, corporations, or civil society – has proved inadequate, as women in these roles often reproduce dominant patriarchal leadership models or propagate ideologies and policies that do not actually advance equality or universal human rights. What is required is truly transformative, visionary leadership, whereby new paradigms, relationships and structures are constructed on the basis of peace, planetary health, and social and economic justice.

On August 30th, 2023, over 90 members of the Placencia Peninsula community gathered for a collaborative workshop to address escalating threats to Belize’s coastline. Hosted by Fragments of Hope Ltd. and WWF Mesoamerica, the event introduced an international initiative, Strong Coasts, which studies Nature-Based Solutions to flooding and erosion risks. Through interactive presentations, discussions, and hands-on exercises, attendees shared diverse perspectives on protecting vital yet vulnerable ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs. Five key areas of concern emerged from participants: governance gaps, unsustainable resource use, insufficient coastal protection, pollution, and habitat loss. Despite varied viewpoints, participants expressed unity around enhancing enforcement and community input in decisions impacting the peninsula. Participatory mapping activities visualized erosion patterns and changes in habitats, revealing how geography shapes local outlooks. In written reflections, people noted new insights gained while emphasizing the need for ongoing, cooperative efforts to implement solutions. This workshop report marks one of many step in the community collectively working to care for the threatened nature so central to health, livelihoods, and heritage along the peninsula. We are deeply grateful to all the participants who generously contributed their time, energy, and invaluable insights. As the Strong Coasts project moves forward, we are guided by the words of Jamaican philosopher Sylvia Wynter: “What we do to nature we do to ourselves. Let us walk gently through life.
