It is a critical study of Philippa Foot’s conception of natural normativity set forth in her recent book Natural Goodness (Clarendon Press, Oxford 2001). The book is essentially devoted to two main subjects. The first one consists of presentation of a new, naturalistic and objectivistic, metaethical standpoint. When viewed from this standpoint, evaluations of characteristics and operations of all living things (including moral evaluative judgements of human features and actions) share the same structure. In virtue of that structure, goodness or badness ascribed to an individual organism are determined by the relation of that individual to its life form. The second significant theme of Natural Goodness deals with the relationship between morality and practical rationality. Goodness of an act is a necessary condition of that act being practically rational. The author’s general assessment of Ph. Foot’s book is rather negative. Her argument seems to lack methodological order, coherence and intellectual clarity. The very conception of natural normativity seems to contain a lot of fundamental flaws. It precludes, e.g. the possibility that any living thing could be evaluated as bad.

Streszczenie:
The whimsical upper-voice texts of the anonymous fourteenth-century motet Musicalis/Sciencie stage an epistolary exchange between Rhetoric, Music, and a long list of French composers and singers. The letters complain that these musicians, whose ranks include Guillaume de Machaut and Philippe de Vitry, split words with rests when they write hockets. The critical tone of Musicalis/Sciencie implies that some ars nova composers must have regularly split words with hockets, while others—the motet’s composer, for one—held this to be bad practice. But since modern editions and medieval scribes alike are imprecise in the placement of text around hockets, the existence of such opposing camps seems difficult to substantiate. An analysis of text-note alignment in four sources for Apta/Flos reveals that some scribes were prescriptive in their texting of hockets, while others, like the scribe of the important Ivrea codex, were pragmatic. An awareness of these differences can lead to alternate modes of interpreting ambiguous text underlay. In the case of Philippe de Vitry’s Petre/Lugentium, shifting syllables adjacent to hockets can transform the work, highlighting carefully differentiated textural zones that are key to its structure. Such editorial intervention can in turn yield fresh insight into competing compositional approaches.

Ethical relativists and subjectivists hold that fact must be distinguished from value, ‘is’ from ‘ought’ and reason from emotion. Their distinctions have been called into question, notably by Philippa Foot (Natural Goodness 2001), also by Alasdair Macintyre (Dependent Rational Animals 1999).Reason in the form of the life sciences—ethology, biology—indicates that what is good or bad for an individual animal and its species are matters of objective fact. There is nothing relativistic about the idea that fresh meat is good for wolves and it is a fact, a paradigm fact, that polluted water is bad for dolphins. Moreover what is good for an animal is often something that is good about it. Sharp ears and great speed are good for deer and are also what makes a deer a good specimen of its kind. These general remarks apply to the human animal as well as to ‘ordinary’ animals. The good and bad discussed by moral philosophers cannot be radically different from the good and bad known through reason. But if it were it would normally be a remarkably indigent field of study.

The television series The Good Place (2016–2020), created by Michael Schur revolves around four humans who—after their deaths—end up in what they believe to be heaven: the “Good Place”. In reality, however, they are in a very sophisticated torture place, built and directed by demons from the “Bad Place”. During the four seasons of the series, the four humans discover the true nature of their predicament and try to reach to “real” Good Place, through—among other means—improving their moral attitude, e.g., becoming a better person by taking ethical lessons provided by one of the four, who is an actual professor of moral philosophy. During these lessons, the four discuss many ethical and philosophical notions, ideas and problems, among which is Philippa Foot’s famous 1967 thought experiment known as the Trolley Problem. The series as a whole, the author of this article argues, revolves around this impossible moral dilemma, suggesting self-sacrifice as an ultimate solution to the Trolley Problem.

This article considers a selection of films about air travel that encompass an array of voyagers from refugees to business travelers as a metaphor for cinéma-monde and its complex threads and trajectories. Through an analysis of key moments of transition, transformation, or exposition within short scenes from six films set at least in part at airports, I examine how characters and viewers orient themselves between the hubs shared by air networks and the film apparatuses that compose cinéma-monde. I also consider the ways that air networks intersect with other (terrestrial, virtual, cine-industrial) networks. The films analyzed are Des étoiles/Under the Starry Sky (Dyana Gaye, 2013, France/Belgium/Senegal), Je suis mort mais j’ai des amis/I’m Dead But I Have Friends (Guillaume Malandrin and Stéphane Malandrin, 2015, Belgium/France), Le fils de Jean/A Kid (Philippe Lioret, 2016, France/Canada), Bab el web (Merzak Allouache, 2005, France/Switzerland/Algeria), Bird People (Pascale Ferran, 2014, France), and De Nieuwe Wereld/The New World (Jaap van Heusden, 2013, Netherlands). Drawing on these examples, I propose the concept of “orienteering” as a description for how protagonists navigate narrative spaces but also as a model for how viewers and scholars might interact with films with the cinéma-monde framework.

Abstract Based on manuscripts from the Mexican National Archive recording a 1650 Inquisition trial for astrology, this article will present a reconstruction of the story of Gaspar Riveros Vasconcelos, a “mulatto” born in Tangier, a descendant of a Portuguese father and Angolan mother. He travelled the Atlantic commercial routes – visiting Angola, Pernambuco, Cartagena de Indias, La Havana – and got involved in political discussions with Spaniards residing in mid-seventeenth century Mexico City. This period was particularly tough for Portuguese people in Spanish America, given the 1640 breach of the dynastic union of Spain and Portugal, which had been formerly achieved in 1581 by King Philipp ii. Vasconcelos’ story allows us to reflect on identity formation in time, on the concept of race, as well as on the ways in which “a persona miserable de color pardo” could deploy his agency as Afro-Portuguese in colonial Mexico society. As such, this paper aims to reconsider the relevance of individual narratives which can generate a growing awareness of the importance that Afro-descendants had in the Ibero-American world and how they could influence the process of racialization in the local context of seventeenth century New Spain.

Geraldton waxflower (Chamelaucium uncinatum Schauer, family Myrtaceae), indigenous to western Australia, is cultivated commercially in South Africa as a cut-flower crop and exported to markets in the Northern Hemisphere. In September 2000, disease symptoms were observed on 4-year-old plants in a commercial orchard of C. uncinatum cv. Ofir in Philippe, in the Western Cape Province. The base of the petals and the calyxes of the waxflowers showed brown necrotic lesions. Eventually the calyx and all the petals turned brown, and the flowers shriveled and abscised. B. cinerea Pers.:Fr was consistently isolated from affected petal and calyx tissues. When placed in a moist chamber, conidia and mycelia formed on the surface of dead and infected tissue. Koch's postulates were confirmed by spraying flower stems of C. uncinatum cv. Ofir with a spore suspension (1 × 106 conidia per ml). Inoculated flower stems were placed in a bottle filled with water and enclosed in transparent plastic bags for 24 h at 21°C. Typical symptoms developed on the petals and calyx within 3 days after inoculation. B. cinerea was reisolated from affected tissues. Botrytis flower blight or gray mold, causing a flower petal disease, has been recorded on C. uncinatum in Australia (1), but this is the first record of Botrytis flower blight of C. uncinatum in South Africa. Because Geraldton waxflower is a major cut-flower crop grown for export, this disease can cause significant losses to the industry, especially under cool, wet growing conditions. Reference: (1) A. The purpose of the article is to study the culture of alcohol consumption in the Hetmanate of the 18th century as a marker of quality of life. The author analyzed the diaries of Cossack elders and the epistolary heritage of this period, singled out references to the use of alcoholic beverages, circumstances, cases of abuse. The research methodology is determined by the purpose and features of the main sources and, in addition to the application of general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis), involves the use of a microhistorical approach, elements of prosopography and social history. Since it is primarily about the analysis of diaries, the theoretical work of the French researcher Philippe Lejeune was applied, who examined the development of diaries from the "accounting of the past" to emotional notes. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that alcohol consumption is not considered as a bad habit or a certain branch of the economy, but as a component of a person's leisure behavior, the realization of undesirable needs, which also determined the quality of life. It was concluded that from the point of view of traditional markers of quality, Ukrainian early modern society was quite homogeneous (life expectancy, mortality, diseases). Even the diet of the common people and the elite was often similar. But the consumption of alcoholic beverages was just one of those markers that at the everyday level testified to a higher or lower level of well-being. But their consumer culture was significantly different. Precisely from the point of view of alcohol consumption - frequency, volume, and its assortment, one can observe the difference in everyday life and its quality. Belonging to a higher social status and financial resources provided access to higher quality alcohol and higher quality of its consumption. At the same time, the Cossack elder of the Hetmanate had access to alcohol produced in different countries and corresponding to the lifestyle of the European nobility of that time. In this way, the "precious" people of old Ukraine were similar to the European establishment.

In recent years, the field of Mamluk studies has seen what may well be an amount of published scholarship unparalleled in any field of Middle East studies. Less than a decade ago, the study of the Mamluk rulers of Egypt and Syria could hardly have been called a distinct field, and it was only about four decades ago that the period was given any systematic attention at all through the pioneering efforts of David Ayalon. However, Mamluk specialists now have their own journal, the Mamluk Studies Review, with three annual volumes in print and more on the way, as well as an extensive and ever-growing Web-based bibliography, both of which are published by the University of Chicago's Middle East Documentation Center. Mamluk specialists around the world have been engaged in this work, but it was initiated by Thomas Philipp and the late Ulrich Haarmann. In December 1994, these two scholars organized a conference on Mamluk studies in Bad Homburg, Germany, and eighteen of the papers presented at that symposium have been published as The Mamluks in Egyptian Politics and Society. The papers in this volume cover the period of the Mamluk sultanate in Egypt and Syria from 1250 to 1517, as well as the subsequent Ottoman period up to the rule of Muhammad Ali in the early 19th century. The richness of the sources for this period is evident in the diverse topics represented; papers dealing with political and social history are supplemented by studies in astronomy, religion, traditional culture, historiography, and urban geography. Indeed, the volume stands as a benchmark from which to view this rapidly growing field.

Abstract Background: The estrogen receptor (ER) is the key therapeutic target for ER-positive (ER+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer. Novel degraders of ER may overcome resistance to available endocrine therapy (ET) while providing consistent oral bioavailability and convenience of administration. LY3484356 is a novel, orally bioavailable selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) with pure antagonistic properties resulting in sustained inhibition of ER-dependent gene transcription and -cell growth. In the phase 1a/b EMBER trial, LY3484356 monotherapy demonstrated a favorable safety profile with pharmacokinetic (PK) exposures that exceeded fulvestrant. LY3484356 also showed single agent efficacy in patients with ER+, HER2- metastatic breast cancer (MBC), including in patients with baseline ESR1 mutations and fulvestrant- and/or CDK4/6 inhibitor- refractory disease1. Trial Design: EMBER-3 is a randomized, open-label, global phase 3 study comparing LY3484356 versus investigator’s choice of ET (fulvestrant or exemestane), in patients with ER+, HER2- locally advanced or MBC. Approximately 500 patients will be randomized 1:1 to receive LY3484356 (400 mg PO QD continuously in 28-day cycles) or investigator’s choice of ET (dosed per label). Males and pre-menopausal women will receive concomitant treatment with a GnRH agonist. Eligibility criteria: Eligible patients are adult males and females (pre- or post-menopausal) with ER+, HER2- locally advanced or MBC who have received prior treatment with an aromatase inhibitor, alone or in combination with a CDK4/6 inhibitor. No other prior therapy for advanced disease is permitted. Patients must have evaluable disease (measurable or non-measurable bone only). Study endpoints: The primary endpoint is investigator-assessed progression-free survival (PFS) per RECIST v1.1. Secondary endpoints include BIRC-assessed PFS, overall survival, objective response rate, duration of response, clinical benefit rate, safety and tolerability, PK and patient reported outcomes. Recruitment for the EMBER-3 study begins in Q3 2021. Reference: 1Jhaveri et al. Compared to high temperature SOEC usually based on Yttrium stabilized Zirconia electrolytes, intermediate temperature PCEC allows the production of water free hydrogen and a better chemical stability. Proton conducting perovskite specific materials, such as Barium Indates1, Zirconate or Cerates2 are nearly commercial electrolytes for such devices. This study focuses on the synthesis the characterization and the densification of the BaZr1-xCexY0.1O3- δ 3 powder. At intermediate temperature and under humid atmosphere, hydration process allows diffusion of protonic charges. Such electrolyte material combines a low thermal expansion coefficient and a high protonic conductivity. Two specific stoichiometry’s have been studied, Cerium rich BaZr 0.3 Ce 0.6 Y0.1O3- δ (BZCY361) and Zirconium rich BaZr 0.7 Ce 0.2 Y0.1O3- δ (BZCY721). BZCY361 shows at 550°C, a conductivity level of 2.10- 2 S.cm- 1. However, despite its high protonic conductivity, the cerium rich phase is not stable at high temperature and is torn apart in presence of carbon dioxide. BaZr1-xCexY0.1O3- δ powder has been synthetized by combustion reaction based on nitrate precursors and glycine as organic complexing/fuel agent. The fuel/oxidizer (nitrates) ratio, which is a key parameter4, has been optimized in order to obtain the best purity and crystallinity. The powder is then milled and calcined. The single-phase electrolyte powder is conventionally shaped into pellets and densified A minimal temperature of 1600°C is necessary to obtained a density of 90-95%. In order to reduce the sintering temperature, an intermediate sintering step called "Cold Sintering Process"5 (CSP) has been investigated. In this technic, derived from the hydrothermal method, BCZY powder mixed with a small volume of liquid phase (3-30 wt%) is simultaneously pressed (at 50 to 500 MPa) and heated during a short time period (1-60 min) at low temperatures (100-200°C), leading to dense pellets. In regards to design a complete cell based on this electrolyte, EIS has been performed under hydrogen and air atmosphere. The electrochemical measurements of the samples provided by the different protocols and stoichiometry’s have been compared in order to determine the impact of the CSP and stoichiometry parameters on the ionic conductivity of the material. Streszczenie:
Abstract Background: Immune exclusion is characterized by a predominance of CD8+ T cells in the stroma of the tumor microenvironment (TME) which are not in contact with tumor cells. Immune exclusion is a significant obstacle to effective cancer immunotherapy and reversing it has emerged as a new therapeutic opportunity. However, the objective assessment of immune exclusion remains a challenge due to the complexity of the TME and the need for immunostaining to quantify CD8+ cells in tumor and stroma. While artificial intelligence (AI) models applied to H&E images can quantify spatial tissue and cell features at scale, they are unable to identify the molecular subtypes of cells. Here we describe the development of a machine learning model that classifies tumors by their CD8-defined immune phenotypes using features extracted from H&E whole slide images alone. Methods: Al-powered TME models (PathAI PathExplore™) were deployed on H&E images from 39 non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) samples. CD8-based assessment of immune phenotypes was done using an adjacent section. 115 H&E-derived features from each of the 25 tumor samples (12 NSCLC, 13 TNBC) classified as immune excluded and 7 tumor samples (3 NSCLC, 4 TNBC) classified as immune infiltrated were used as input into a feature selection process to identify the subset of H&E features predictive of immune phenotype. The feature selection process was driven by an ensemble L1 norm support vector machine (Ens-L1-SVM) model containing 500 L1-SVM base models each trained by 80% of the data. The degree of immune exclusion was determined in the feature space by the distance to the separation hyperplane defined by the model. Out-of-bag error estimation was employed on the remaining 20% of data from each base model to assess model performance. Results: The Ens-L1-SVM model identified 6 H&E features predictive of CD8-defined immune phenotypes, including the density ratio of lymphocytes to macrophages in the cancer epithelium, the density of fibroblasts, and the spatial distributions of cancer cells, macrophages, and lymphocytes. Immune phenotypes were classified by the Ens-L1-SVM model with an estimated accuracy of 97%. Additionally, all selected features and their direction of association aligned with prior knowledge of the mechanisms or manifestations of immune exclusion or infiltration in the TME. Conclusion: This work illustrated that morphologic features derived from H&E images using AI-powered models can be effective predictors of CD8-defined immune exclusion, providing an option for patient stratification by immune phenotype using widely-available H&E images. While the Ens-L1-SVM model showed robust performance on a small number of samples and is expected to have good generalizability due to the linear nature of the model, additional validation across diverse datasets and various tumor indications is needed. Abstract Appropriate control of cell death is a fundamental biological process which is frequently dysregulated during tumor development and therapeutic resistance. Apoptosis is a form of regulated cell death initiated by either the extracellular environment (extrinsic) or following internal cellular damage (intrinsic). It is controlled by the BCL-2 family which includes anti-apoptotic regulators like BCL-2, BCL-XL and MCL-1 that bind and sequester various pro-apoptotic BH3-only proteins (BIM, BAD, BID, NOXA, PUMA, etc.), and the pro-apoptotic effectors (BAK, BAX, etc.) responsible for mitochondrial pore formation and MOMP (mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization). MOMP results in intermembrane space protein release, leading to caspase activation in an irreversible path to programmed cell death. Of the anti-apoptotic regulators, MCL-1 is one of the most frequently and highly amplified genes in human cancers such as myeloid leukemia making it a compelling therapeutic target. Since BCL-2 proteins interact through protein-protein interactions, they have long been elusive targets. The success of selective BCL-2 protein inhibitor Venetoclax in the treatment of various hematological cancers, however spurred interest in MCL-1 as an oncology target. Using structure-based drug design, major breakthroughs were made in the development of MCL-1 inhibitors, with several candidates entering clinical studies in the past five years. JNJ-4355, a highly potent 1,4-indolyl macrocycle (MCL-1 Ki = 18 pM, Cell (MOLP8) AC50 = 8.7 nM) was optimized to address shortcomings from first generation MCL-1 inhibitors: it has improved physicochemical properties (CHI LogD7.4 = 2.35, EPSA = 151 Å2), resulting in greatly improved equilibrium solubility (3.14 mM in buffer pH 7) and reduced protein binding (99.93%). JNJ-4355 showed promising in vitro potency data in cancer cell lines and AML patient-derived samples (cell killing AC50 0.29-75 nM in 25/27 evaluable samples). In vivo MCL-1:BAK complex disruption was confirmed in a mouse MOLM13 (AML) xenograft. Efficacy was demonstrated in a mouse MOLP8 (multiple myeloma) xenograft resulting in complete tumor regression after a single IV dose of JNJ-4355. Citation Format: Frederik J. Streszczenie:
In the last decade of the 18th century, the Danish state experienced a period of prosperity, which was characterized by a German-Danish cultural transfer in all intellectual fields. The first clouds were cast by the rise of an artistic self-confidence. Asmus Jacob Carstens from Schleswig and Ernst Meyer from Altona, who felt disadvantaged in the awarding of medals and protested vehemently, were expelled from the art academy in Copenhagen in 1781 and 1821. Nevertheless, the Copenhagen Art Academy had a strong attraction for numerous artists from northern Germany. In this respect, Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge and Georg Friedrich Kersting are primarily worthy of mention. The Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen was a strong link between the Germans and Scandinavians living in Rome throughout his life. The first cracks in the good bilateral relationship came with the strengthening of the national liberal movements. In 1842, the influential teacher at the Copenhagen Art Academy, N.L. Høyen, drew up a program aimed at repressing influences from abroad, especially from Germany. Not all artists heeded Høyens call for a return to national themes of history, folk life, and nature, so that two groups confronted each other in Denmark: the nationalists and the Europeans. With the German-Danish War of 1848/51 there was a rift, and with the war of 1864 the final break. Only after twenty years did the academies of Copenhagen and Berlin resume contact. From 1883 onwards, there were reciprocal visits, which led to Danish artists once again taking part in representative exhibitions in Berlin or Munich. Conversely, however, German artists were denied participation in exhibitions in Copenhagen, an exception being the International Art Exhibition on the inauguration of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen in 1897. A spirit freed from all academic constraints also emanated from the artist colonies in Europe. In particular, the works of the Skagen painters were enthusiastically celebrated at exhibitions in Munich and Berlin, which led to some German painters traveling to the Danish artists' colony, where they were received without prejudice. However, at no time was there a balance in the official acceptance and appreciation of the art of the respective neighbouring country. While painters such as Michael Ancher and Peder Severin Krøyer sold works to renowned collectors and museums in Germany, no Danish Museum acquired the work of a German artist during the period under study. The Berlin painter Walter Leistikow, who was married to a Danish woman, worked hard to stimulate a German-Danish art transfer and succeeded in getting the leading Danish gallery owner Valdemar Kleis to offer German painters the opportunity to exhibit in Copenhagen for the first time in 1894, most of whom belonged to the group Die XI, a precursor of the Berlin Secession. The appreciation of the Skagen painters was replaced at the turn of the century by admiration works by F.J. Willumsen and Vilhelm Hammershøj. Hammershøj filled a room of his own at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1900 with 14 works, and the Schulte Gallery in Berli While German admiration for Danish art peaked between 1890 and 1900, people in Denmark continued to look past the German art scene. This was also experienced by the artists' group Die Brücke, which sought foreign members soon after its founding. When Kleis presented works by the Brücke artists in Copenhagen in 1908, they too received only negative reviews. In March 1910, the time seemed ripe for a change of mood. The Berlin gallery owner Herwarth Walden strove to make his Sturm-Galerie a rallying point for the European modernist art movements. In July 1912, he rented the exhibition building of the secessionist group Den Frie in Copenhagen and held an exhibition of Italian Futurists there. When Walden was celebrated by the Danish press as a cosmopolitan who had brought modernism to Copenhagen, he showed works by the French Henri le Fauconier and Raoul Dufy, as well as the painters Marianne von Werefkin and Gabriele Münter, but the tenor of the press was again dominated by anti-German resentment. After the outbreak of World War I, Walden allowed himself to be abused by the German propaganda department of the German Secret and Intelligence Service, which strove to correct the image of Germans abroad as cultural barbarians. Walden showed works by Kandinsky, Klee, Kokoschka, Marc, and again Gabriele Münter at the Copenhagen artists’ cabaret Edderkoppen in the fall of 1917. He also planned an exhibition of Danish avant-garde in his Sturm Gallery in Berlin, but the artists had become suspicious in the face of German propaganda, which was celebrating a last military success. The exhibition was canceled. This did not prevent Walden from organizing an exhibition at Kleis’ art shop in Copenhagen shortly before the end of the war, under the guise of internationalism. This was Walden's largest and most ambitious project in Scandinavia. Of the 133 works exhibited, almost half came from Germany. The attempt to convince the Danes of the excellence of German art failed miserably, because the basic conviction was still: Everything that comes from Germany is bad. The opening took place on November 28 and ended on December 16, 1918, by which time the war was already over.
