Schachtel, Bernard 1943. "Bulimia: a Phenomenological Approach". Thesis, North Texas State University, 1988. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331020/.

Streszczenie:
This study used a qualitative/phenomenological research methodology to examine the perspective of five bulimic subjects about their lives in order to understand the bulimic individual's point of view and develop a clearer picture of the world of the bulimic. This approach involved three interviews for each of the five subjects totalling 22 1/2 hours. The three interviews dealt with the subjects' past and present experiences and their ideas about the future. The qualitative/phenomenological methodology created an in-depth view of each subject's relationship to the beginning of her bulimia and its subsequent development. During the period when the interviews were being transcribed, patterns and concepts emerged and were examined. Nine categories were developed from this data reflecting some of the characteristics of a bulimic's personality. Six research questions were formulated and then answered by evaluating them in the light of the nine categories as well as data and descriptions from the interviews. No one single category was found to be uniquely dominant, but rather the categories tended to appear in a cluster-like fashion depending on the individual personality of the bulimic. The data of this study revealed a distinction between the personality and the behavior of the bulimic. A form with a Likert-like response was developed by the researcher and given out to 11 raters in order to evaluate the presence or non-presence of the categories in selected passages. On the basis of the findings of this study, with its limited subject pool, certain recommendations are presented for the reader that might perhaps be of some use in understanding bulimia.

Streszczenie:
There appears to be a dearth of research into the experience of existential-phenomenological Counselling Psychologists when working with dreams in therapeutic practice. This study is an attempt to bridge this gap in current understanding through a systematic use of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. During this study a great deal of underlying commonalities and to a lesser degree, differences between the four participants were uncovered. The main commonalities in the participants’ experience of dreamwork were based around the focus on the relationship, staying close to the manifest content of the dream, caution in imposing the therapist’s own meaning, dream meanings as dynamic, dreams approached as metaphors, a general acceptance about a lack of structured existential-phenomenological dream model, dreams as means to foster insight and a widening of awareness. The participants’ experiences highlighted a tension between working existentially and integrating aspects from other therapeutic modalities such as Jungian and Gestalt oriented interventions. This study could provide Counselling Psychologists, particularly those trained to work within an existential-phenomenological framework, with ideas on how they might integrate dreamwork into their current therapeutic practice.

In this thesis, two applications of dimensional deconstruction are studied. The first application is a model for neutrino oscillations in the presence of a large decon- structed extra dimension. In the second application, Kaluza{Klein dark matter from a latticized universal extra dimension is studied. The goal of these projects have been twofold. First, to see whether it is possible to reproduce the relevant features of the higher-dimensional continuum theory, and second, to examine the effect of the latticization in experiments. In addition, an introduction to the the- ory of dimensional deconstruction as well as to the theory of continuous extra dimensions is given. Furthermore, the various higher-dimensional models, such as Arkani-Hamed{Dvali{Dimopolous (ADD) models and models with universal extra dimensions, that have been intensively studied in recent years, are discussed.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Delusions can be reliably identified in clinical populations. However their definition has been a matter of controversy. Attributes that are commonly used to characterise delusions, such as falsity and excessive conviction, do not generally distinguish them from more ordinary beliefs. The convention that considers delusions as forms of belief obscures many of the important points of distinction from more ordinary beliefs. Conceptual review of the concept of bizarre delusions suggests that delusions are distinguishable from other forms of belief by virtue of their individual bizarreness. That is, delusions depart from what might be the understandable beliefs or experiences for a given individual. Departure from what is objectively possible or culturally sanctioned or expected are useful, but potentially misleading, proxies for individual bizarreness. Although individual bizarreness may be the key defining feature of delusional phenomena, bizarreness, however conceived, may not usefully distinguish different subtypes of delusion. The idea that delusions are best considered to be on a continuum with more ordinary beliefs is problematic. The continuum hypothesis depends on overemphasis on falsity and complete conviction as identifying characteristics of delusions. Both continuum and category approaches to delusions have utility that depends on the immediate purpose, but neither approach in itself can be presumed to show the greater verisimilitude. Overvalued ideas are another group of strongly held beliefs that may be false and idiosyncratic. Their relationship to delusions has been uncertain. It is argued that overvalued ideas and delusions are different kinds of phenomena, as overvalued ideas lack the individual bizarreness of delusions. A comparison of delusions in individuals with schizophrenia, with over-valued ideas in individuals with non-psychotic mental disorders, is reported. Several differences between delusions and over-valued ideas were identified. Over-valued ideas were associated with more gradual onset, greater preoccupation, and more concern about the opinions of others about the belief. Delusions were less plausible in their content and the deluded individuals often accounted for the origin of their delusion by referring to other psychotic experiences such as hallucinations. Conviction and insight were not found to differ across the two groups. Delusions are experiences that have many of the external characteristics of ordinary human belief. However overemphasis on these similarities results in neglect of important differences, and may lead to clinical error.

This essay traces the reception of Augustine in the 20th and 21st century phenomenological tradition. It gives special attention to recent monographs on Augustine by Jean-Luc Marion and Jean-Louis Chrétien, but contextualises these both fore (by examining the earlier work of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, as well as earlier and less determinative Augustinian engagements by Marion and Chrétien) and aft (by critically considering the philosophical, philological and theological implications of phenomenology for the study of Augustine). The cross-fertilization of its study of Augustine himself and its study of the various phenomenological appropriations of Augustine sheds new light on the Augustinian questions of Platonism, ontology, and the role of Scripture in philosophy.

Phillipson, Polly. "Phenomenological processes underlying coping humour". Thesis, University of East London, 2001. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/1284/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
In Comparison to other psychological topics, research into humour is relatively limited, despite humour being a ubiquitous phenomenon and an important coping tool. The few studies that have been performed have mainly adopted the approach of quantifying humour using psychometric measures. The inconsistent findings of these studies prompted the starting point of this thesis, which replicates a study testing the stress moderating effects of humour according to various psychometric measures. This replication, which produced nonsignificant results, raised important questions on the effectiveness of this methodology and initiated a shift from a positivist to a constructivist paradigm, which subsequently shaped the focus of the thesis. The thesis presents a study of people's use of humour as a means of coping with stress and difficulty, using reversal theory as a conceptual framework. The intention was to generate a deeper and more coherent understanding of the processes underlying coping humour and to work towards developing a theory of coping humour based on experiential evidence. The method of approach was an empirical, qualitative investigation and analysis within a constructivist paradigm. The main data presented are interviews in which the discussion of coping humour experiences was encouraged. A repeated content analysis, guided by the principles of grounded theory, was essential in uncovering layers of meaning in the phenomenological data. This led to an interpretative account of coping humour, expressed in the form of a model. The model of coping humour contains six dynamically interacting elements, which offer a criterion for coping humour to work effectively. The model's constituent elements expand existing theories of humour by giving them greater depth and coherence. Furthermore, the model can operate as an interpretative framework, accommodating the unique variation of each episode of coping humour. The main contribution of this thesis is to provide a model of coping humour that offers a working theory substantiated by experiential evidence that is both generative and evolving. A further contribution is to highlight weaknesses within current measures of humour, and to offer suggestions for improvement based on the more realistic and meaningful portrayal of humour that has been generated.

Hall, Jonathan. "Phenomenological aspects of the E6SSM". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2011. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/205509/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The work in this thesis explores various phenomenological aspects of the E6SSM with a particular focus on the inert neutralino sector of the model and on the dark matter implications. The E6SSM is a string theory inspired supersymmetric extension to the Standard Model with an E6 grand unification group. The model provides a solution to the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model, provides an explanation for neutrino mass, and has automatic gauge anomaly cancellation. The inert neutralino sector of the E6SSM and the dark matter that naturally arises from this sector is studied for the first time. Limits on the parameter space from experimental and cosmological observations relating to the inert neutralino dark matter are explored and the consequences for Higgs boson phenomenology are investigated. In plausible scenarios it is found that the couplings of the lightest inert neutralinos to the SM-like Higgs boson are always rather large. This has major implications for Higgs boson collider phenomenology and leads to large spin-independent LSP-nucleon cross-sections. Because of the latter, scenarios in which E6SSM inert neutralinos account for all of the observed dark matter are now severely challenged by recent dark matter direct detection experiment analyses. In plausible scenarios consistent with observations from both cosmology and LEP the lightest inert neutralino is required to have a mass around half of the Z boson mass if it contributes to cold dark matter and this means that tan(β) cannot be too large. A new variant of the E6SSM called the E6ZS 2 SSM is also presented in which the dark matter scenario is very different to the inert neutralino cold dark matter scenario and in which the presence of supersymmetric massless states in the early universe modifies the expansion rate of the universe prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. The new dark matter scenario is consistent with current observations and the modified expansion rate provides a better explanation of various data than the SM prediction. The prospects for a warm dark matter scenario in the E6SSM are also briefly discussed

Avilez, Ana A. "Phenomenological tests of modified gravity". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28546/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The main goal of this thesis is to test the viability of some modified theories of gravity suitable to describe gravitational phenomena at cosmological and astronomical scales. In the first part of the Thesis we study the viability of the Brans-Dicke theory (BDT) and the effective scalar-tensor theory according (gBDT) to cosmological observations. We assume that either BDT as gBDT are limiting cases on very large scales of more general scalar-tensor theories involving derivative self-interactions which have running Newton’s constant. In order to implement this assumption in a simple way we consider two types of models. The restricted models that correspond to the standard BDT with Newton constant today equal to measured Newton constant in solar-system experiments. The unrestricted models, correspond to the case where the Newton’s constant today is a free parameter, and the cosmological GN is allowed to be different than in the solar system as in more general theories. We first explore the relevant theoretical aspects of these models. Afterwards, by using different analysis techniques we fitted cosmological observations. Finally we forecast limits of BDT by considering estimated covariance matrices for measurements of the matter power spectrum in redshift space from Euclid. The effective scalar-tensor theory gBDT arises from a phenomenological setup of parametrization of the LSS growth equations, we found estimates of modifications of the growth by using the correspondance between the estimates for the gBDT parameters. In the second part of the Thesis we present an extension of the Parameterized Post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism that is able to handle Vainsteinian corrections. We argue that theories with a Vainshtein mechanism must be expanded using two small parameters. In this Parameterized Post-Newtonian-Vainshteinian (PPNV) expansion, the primary expansion parameter which controls the PPN order is as usual the velocity v. The secondary expansion parameter, α, controls the strength of the Vainshteinian correction and is a theory-specific combination of the Schwarzschild radius and the Vainshtein radius of the source that is independent of its mass. We present the general framework and apply it to the Cubic galileon theory both inside and outside the Vainshtein radius. The PPNV framework can be used to determine the compatibility of such theories with solar system and other strong-field data.

Drabek, Matthew Louis. "A phenomenological account of practices". Diss., University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2861.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Appeals to practices are common the humanities and social sciences. They hold the potential to explain interesting or compelling similarities, insofar as similarities are distributed within a community or group. Why is it that people who fall under the same category, whether men, women, Americans, baseball players, Buddhists, feminists, white people, or others, have interesting similarities, such as similar beliefs, actions, thoughts, foibles, and failings? One attractive answer is that they engage in the same practices. They do the same things, perhaps as a result of doing things at the same site or setting, or perhaps as a result of being raised in a similar way among members of the same group. In the humanities, appeals to practices often serve as a move to point out diversity among different communities or diversity within the same community. Communities are distinct from one another in part because their members do different things or do things in different ways. The distinct and varied ways in which different communities enact social norms or formulate law, state institutions, and public policy might be explicable in part by the different practices their members are socialized into. Appeals to practices hold the promise of explaining these differences in terms of the different background practices of the groups, cultivated through a kind of cultural isolation or sense of collective identity. In the social sciences, appeals to practices have played a central role in fundamental theorizing and theory building. Appeals to practices in the social sciences are often much more systematic and theoretical, forming the core of the systematic theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens in Anthropology and Sociology. Practice theory has thus become a growth industry in social scientific investigation, offering the promise of a central object of investigation that explains both unity and difference within and across communities and groups. But it is unclear just what practices are and what role, both ontological and explanatory, that practices are supposed to play. The term `practices' is used to pick out a wide range of things, and its relation to other terms, from `tradition' or `paradigm' to `framework' or `presupposition', is unclear. Practices are posited as ubiquitous, yet they are difficult to isolate and pin down. We are all said to participate in them, but they remain hidden. Their role, whether causal, logical, or hermeneutical, remains mysterious. After locating the historical origins of appeals to practices in the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Martin Heidegger, my dissertation uses Stephen Turner's broad and systematic critique of appeals to practices to develop a new type of account. My account is a phenomenological account that treats practices as human doings that show up to people in material and social environments and make themselves available for specific responses in those environments. I argue that a phenomenological account is an effective alternative to accounts that treat practices as either shared objects with properties or shared and implicit presuppositions. I use a phenomenological account of practices to treat important debates in feminist philosophy and the philosophy of the social sciences, particularly debates over pornography's subordination of women and the classification of mental disorders in psychiatry.

Streszczenie:
This study is an exploration of the epoche as a lived experience in existential phenomenological psychotherapy. Beginning with the philosophical underpinnings of the epoche the study explores Husserl's writings regarding the epoche and his reason for introducing the epoche to the practice of phenomenology. A phenomenological · approach to method is used, namely Van Manen's hermeneutic interpretive phenomenology. Using this method, data was generated from ten interviews with existential phenomenological psychotherapists. The focus of the interviews was how the epoche was experienced in practice as a lived experience and how it was effected, this included the procedures used to help effect the epoche and the struggle to maintain the epoche against the pull of the natural attitude. To further explore and understand the epoche I include a piece on my research journey and a personal lived experience in effecting the epoche. Using three stages, thoughtfulness, thematic analysis and seeking meaning, the data is analyzed and from here the themes emerge. The interpretations emerge out of these phenomenological themes and are contrasted and compared with existing concepts in existential phenomenological philosophy, and with current multidisciplinary thought highlighting preliminary possibilities for reconfiguring existing approaches to the epoche. This thesis argues that the coresearchers using other approaches such as mindfulness inadvertently find a way of effecting the epoche and that the mistrust and difficulties co-researchers experience with regard to the epoche is based on misconceptions regarding the epoche, misconceptions which crossed over from phenomenological philosophy to phenomenological psychotherapy. There is also the issue of the lack of instruction in how to perform the epoche. As a consequence the epoche is only partially appreciated and it is to this end that this study might bring into view the relevance and remit of the epoche not only in existential psychotherapy but in using the epoche in any phenomenological investigations.

de, Laplante Lori Teresa. "Understanding somatization: A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6446.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Somatization is a phenomenon that poses a tremendous challenge for patients and physicians alike. No health problem raises more confusion, anxiety, frustration and helplessness than distressing physical symptoms, such as pain or fatigue, which doctors are unable to explain. A phenomenological-hermeneutic investigation was therefore conducted to better understand this mysterious phenomenon and to determine why the Western health care system has such difficulty understanding and treating somatizing patients who suffer from medically unexplained physical symptoms. It was hypothesized that flawed philosophical, theoretical and/or methodological assumptions are partially at fault. As such foundational assumptions are implicit and taken-for-granted their validity is rarely questioned, yet their implications for treatment are profound. To explore this hypothesis, four models of somatization were reviewed and critically evaluated to identify how their foundational assumptions may be contributing to or impeding progress in the conceptualization and treatment of somatization. These include the neuropsychiatric, biopsychosocial, psychoanalytic and narrative models of somatization. After outlining the foundations of a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, the models of somatization were presented, along with a description of how the symptoms of a particular clinical case would likely be conceptualized. Each model was then evaluated in three stages: (1) explication of foundational assumptions, (2) evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, and (3) implications for the problematic of somatization. As a result of this evaluation, specific foundational assumptions have been identified which interfere with the ability of certain models to adequately capture the richness and complexity of somatization as it is lived and experienced by individual sufferers. These flawed foundational assumptions result in inaccurate or incomplete conceptualizations which hinder the ability of proponents to design effective treatments. As a result, some models are contributing inadvertently to the suffering experienced by their patients. While the models varied significantly in terms of their strengths and weaknesses, a cross-model comparison identified a number of foundational, conceptual and treatment issues that remain unresolved or inadequately addressed by the models as a whole. The final chapter described how a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach can begin to address these issues and provide a novel contribution to the understanding and treatment of somatization.

Following P.F. Strawson's reading of Kant, the majority of the literature on transcendental arguments seeks to divorce such arguments from their original Kantian context. This thesis is concerned with Mark Sacks's recent defence of transcendental arguments, which takes a different approach. A critique is given of Sacks's work and extensions and modifications of his approach are recommended. It is proposed that certain difficulties encountered by Kant's transcendentally-ideal approach can be overcome with Hegelian solutions.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The overall aim of the thesis is to argue that important aspects of language are best understood by a 'phenomenological' approach and to assess the contribution this makes to philosophical understanding of language. The principal task is to develop a tenable view of the role language plays in understanding the world, i.e. linguistic articulation, by drawing on three paradigmatic conceptions of language, each of which is 'phenomenological' in the sense of aspiring to describe accurately our experience of language. Since each paradigm accentuates certain aspects of linguistic phenomena, so that none is satisfactory by itself, the three are critically integrated to yield a more balanced overall picture. The first paradigm, the early Heidegger's, is taken to set out a general framework for thinking of language and to identify two poles: language is understood to be grounded in everyday practice, yet ideally its forms serve to present features of the world as they in themselves are. The two further paradigms allow these poles to be filled out in greater detail. Thus Merleau-Ponty's conception of language, which centres on creative expression and incorporates Saussure's idea of language as a 'system of differences', is used to explain the way language presents its objects. Conversely, the later Wittgenstein's view of language as interwoven with day-to-day human practice(s) is used to explicate the practical grounding of language. The thesis then seeks to highlight and assess the broader philosophical implications of the resultant combined phenomenological approach. Focusing on Heidegger's idea of 'prepredicative' founding, it first examines the relationship between the presentational and practical feats identified by this approach and more standard Neo-Fregean semantics-based conceptions of language. Finally, it is considered whether this combined phenomenological view, in particular the ways it sees language use as constituting awareness of its objects, has realist or nonrealist implications.

Streszczenie:
Research on the relationship between place, memory, and identity has tended to focus on either 'felicitous' instances of domesticity (Bachelard, 1994), or on the unambiguous dualism between what constitutes a sense of place and what has perniciously been termed 'site', place divested of its specificity and reduced to a non-place (Casey, 1993, 1997, 2000). My thesis is a rejoinder to this dualism by redirecting the focus toward the memory of places that challenge rather than reinforce our sense of identity. In this way, I hope to advance a more nuanced and progressive understanding of the role place plays in shaping identity, a role that extends to transitional as well as domestic places. I achieve this by performing a phenomenological analysis on the ambiguous entwinement between place and memory, in both an everyday, transitional, and traumatic context. As I argue in my thesis, far from an additional component of memory and history, the spatiality of the past is not only central in the preservation of history but also fundamental to its emergence in the first instance. This implicit rejection of memory as being solely a temporal event leads me to a series of investigations aimed at assessing how memory can become spatialized and how space can be memorialised. Between this dynamic, the role of the body assumes a pivotal role in both facilitating access to the past but also problematizing that access, especially where the memory of trauma is concerned. Against the tendency to split place into dualistic 'modes', my account of the body as a mediator between self and world serves to undermine this dualism by arguing for a morphological rather than divisive absorption of place.

Streszczenie:
The central aim of this thesis is to present a new kind of realism that is driven not from the traditional realism/anti-realism debate but from the practice of physicists. The usual debate focuses on discussions about the truth of theories and how they relate with nature, while the real practices of the scientists are forgotten. The position I shall defend is called "phenomenological realism". The realist doctrine was recently undermined by the argument from pessimistic meta-induction, also known as the argument from scientific revolutions. I argue that phenomenological realism is a new kind of scientific realism that can overcome the problem generated by the pessimistic meta-induction, and which reflects scientific practice. The realist has tried to overcome the pessimistic meta-induction by suggesting various types of theory dichotomy. I claim that the different types of dichotomy normally presented by realists do not overcome the problem, for these dichotomies cut through theory vertically. I argue for a different kind of dichotomy, one that cuts horizontally, between high-level and low-level theoretical representations. I claim that theoretical forms in physics have two distinct types depending on the way they are built. These are theoretical models that are built depending on a top-down approach and phenomenological models that are built depending on a bottom-up approach. I argue that for the most part only phenomenological models are the vehicles of accurate representation. I present two case studies. The first case study is from superconductivity, where I contrast the BCS model of superconductivity with the phenomenological model of Landau and Ginzburg. The other case study is a fresh look at the Bohr-Einstein debate.

Streszczenie:
Previous research has attempted to identify consequences of mental transportation into narrative worlds. While scales have been developed and validated to measure readers' levels of transportation, the objective quantification has left researchers at a descriptive disadvantage for the full range of qualitative responses to this phenomenon. This study presents a qualitative method of inquiry designed to get at the experience of narrative transportation as it is lived: the phenomenological interview. Interview transcripts were inductively analyzed for common themes that indicate intersubjective features of narrative experience. Four main themes were identified, which were composed of 22 base-level experiences reported by participants. These findings corroborated the extant literature and provided a nuanced understanding of the phenomenon as it is lived.

Streszczenie:

Females have emerged in the field of entrepreneurship, and have proven that they are here to stay. The field of entrepreneurship was previously dominated by men, but in recent years females have emerged and are facing success in rapid numbers. Currently, 55% of businesses launched in the United States are launched and run by women (Statistical Abstract of the United States Census Bureau, 2007). The phenomenon of entrepreneurial women being successful is not as common or known in other countries of the world as it is in the USA. Women are launching businesses at a rapid rate, and many women are doing so without assistance. Female solo entrepreneurs are launching their own ventures and dreams without the help of business partners or teams. Entrepreneurs that launch their own business from the ground up without the assistance of business partners, investors, or employees are known as solo entrepreneurs. According to the Statistical Abstract of the United States Census Bureau (2007), 2.9 million new business ventures begin every year in the United States, of which females own 1.6 million. According to Chavern and McKernan (2013), 90% of women owned businesses have no other employees other than the business owner. This qualitative study focused on females as successful solo entrepreneurs in the United States. The purpose of this study was to identify the top 10 traits of successful female solo entrepreneurs. This qualitative study included telephone interviews with 10 successful female solo entrepreneurs. The top 10 traits discovered included independence, confidence, value of time, desire for risk, aversion to limits and barriers, aversion to authority, desire for excitement, control, ability and desire to learn, and perseverance.

Streszczenie:

Shared leadership paradigms are becoming more popular in organizations because of the increased responsibilities placed on leaders within health care organizations. Researchers have conducted little research on how individuals on leadership teams perceive their role in engaging with others in their team. The qualitative phenomenological hermeneutic study involved examining how radiology administrators in Northern California describe their lived experiences on shared leadership teams, with an emphasis on their perceptions of team productivity and trust. The conceptual framework for the study included shared leadership theory, which scholars have noted is still a new field of study. Seven research participants representing from three to 18 years of experience as radiology managers with experience serving on shared leadership teams. From the five initial questions and sub questions, the analysis involved breaking down the responses into 175 separate areas of exploration. In addition to the demographics of the groups and types of teams served on, four themes emerged from this data: lived experience on shared leadership teams, knowledge and skills learned from shared leadership teams, key factors affecting team performance on shared leadership teams, and the effect of diversity on shared leadership teams. The implications of the research to leadership are that radiology managers may gain a better understanding of when to use shared leadership and how to best staff the teams to support organizational work, and how to improve shared leadership team dynamics.

Streszczenie:
The XX century witnessed the quantum and relativistic revolutions in physics. The development of these two theories, namely, Quantum Mechanics and Relativity, was the inception of many crucial discoveries and technological advances. Among them, one stands out due to its uniqueness, the neutrino discovery. However, several neutrino properties are still obscure. Neutrinos are the only fundamental particles whose nature is currently unknown. Such fermions can either be different from their antiparticles, i.e., Dirac fermions, or be their own antiparticles, that is, Majorana fermions. On the other hand, the smallness of neutrino masses is a problem seemingly related to the neutrino nature; thus, as essential task consists in addressing the phenomenologically viable models in both cases. Furthermore, it is important to search for other physical process in which the neutrino nature may manifest through different experimental signatures. A rather difficult but promising method corresponds to the detection of the cosmic neutrino background, viz. neutrinos which are relics from the Big Bang. Previous works have shown that detection rates for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can give different results. Nevertheless, this distinction was obtained considering the Standard Model framework only. Therefore, it is important to understand the consequences of having Non-Standard Interactions contributing to the detection of neutrinos from the cosmic background. Another remarkable relic predicted by Cosmology is the unidentified Dark Matter, composing ~25% of the Universe. All searches regarding the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle, one of the principal candidates for Dark Matter, have given negative results; this has compelled experiments to increase their sensitivity. Notwithstanding, neutrinos may stand in the way of such experimental searches given that they may constitute an irreducible background. In this thesis, we will address these three different phenomena, neutrino mass models, detection of the cosmic neutrino background and the neutrino background in Dark Matter searches, by considering the different characteristics in each case. In the study of neutrino mass models, we will consider models for both Majorana and Dirac neutrinos; specifically, we will probe the neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet model. Regarding the detection of relic neutrinos, we will analyse the consequences of the existence of the beyond Standard Model physics in the capture rate by tritium. Finally, we will scrutinize the impact of neutrinos in Direct Detection WIMP searches, by considering Standard Model plus additional interactions in the form of simplified models.

Composite Higgs Models (CHMs) are formulated in terms of strongly coupled theories. They often predict fermionic top partners with a mass around the TeV scale. Going beyond minimality enriches the spectrum of the theory with additional hypothetical scalars that significantly change the phenomenology. In this thesis, we explore an SO(6)/SO(5) CHM with an additional pseudo-scalar custodial singlet. The latter has anomalous couplings to the Standard Model vector bosons. We study the phenomenology of the singlet, including bounds from the available ATLAS and CMS searches in the relevant channels with di-boson and fermionic final states. We used HiggsBounds tool to test the model theoretical predictions against the current exclusion limits. The study is performed at the 8 and 13 TeV experiments at the LHC. We present a model parameter space from which the bounds on the (most sensitive) signal cross sections of the hypothetical singlet can be easily extracted.

Streszczenie:
Background/aim: Pro-anorexia is a relatively new internet phenomenon. Few papers have been published on the topic; however, these have largely focused on the content of the sites and the effects of viewing them. The studies presented in the thesis were designed to inform our understanding of both the lifeworld and lived experiences of pro-anorexia, with a view to informing both academic and clinical understanding of the phenomenon. Design: Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was employed to explore the lived experience and descriptive phenomenology (DP) was utilised to investigate the lifeworld of the pro-anorexic user. Methods: Eight females were recruited to interviews, which were later transcribed and analysed with IPA. Two pro-anorexic blogs were identified one of which was written by a female and the other a male; these were analysed using DP. Results: The IPA study identified sub-ordinate themes: 'trajectory', 'boosting of the self and 'thinspiration', each with their own independent subordinate themes. The blog studies produced differing themes; however, the studies collectively demonstrated similarities which contributed to the understanding of why people may use these and subsequently disengage from the websites across the stages of eating disorder illness. Conclusion: Pro-anorexia clearly has a significant meaning and is very consuming for its users who present with eating disorder symptoms across the spectrum of illness. Clinicians should adopt a clinical stance (Geller, Williams and Srikameswaran, 2001) which fosters curiosity and acceptance, whilst suspending judgment when working with clients with eating disorders, specifically those who use pro-ana. In doing this it is anticipated that shame associated with use will be reduced and in being heard, users will be less likely to resort to pro-anorexic materials. It has been found that where services fail to work with the clients current stage of change (Prochaska and DiClemente, 1983) then pro-anorexic use is likely to re-occur. The findings of the studies included in this thesis also demonstrate a need for contributors to both popular and academic media alike, to engage in wider consultation to establish the most useful way in which to present pro-anorexia in the public and academic domain and hence, provide warnings on the topic, rather than signpost those who are vulnerable to eating disorder symptomology.

Streszczenie:
This thesis seeks to re-examine the philosophies of some key French thinkers, as it places these alongside both historical and contemporary theory and criticism, in order to launch a new phenomenological investigation of the theatrical and literary works of Samuel Beckett. The writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and his contemporaries were once applied to the Beckett canon in order that this might be placed firmly in its historical, post-war context, and the so-called French existentialists contributed greatly, though unwittingly, to the birth of that now rather dated conceptual framework which we have come to know as The Theatre of the Absurd. This study, rather than enforcing notions of a theatrical age of nihilism, draws upon the theories of Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and peers, not in an attempt to dwell upon the meaning(lessness) of being that is the focus of traditional existentialist analyses, but so that an ontology of the Beckett character can be established. Over the course of the five chapters which comprise this work, I aim to change the focus from that which has been categorised as existential and/or absurd in Beckett s oeuvre, to the phenomenological points of interest that are manifest in that same. I will demonstrate, for instance, that by employing Sartre s lengthy and intricate exposition of being-for-itself as a model for the human consciousness, and using this as something of a touchstone as both complementary and competing philosophies are also considered (including the subjective idealism of Bishop Berkeley and the deconstruction of Jacques Derrida), we can begin to see some of the complexities inherent in the diverse modes of human being that can be discerned in Beckett s works. Existentialism has become, in reality, no more than the once-popular, historically-situated face of phenomenological philosophies which actually deal not so much in the overt pessimism that they (and Beckett) are charged with, but in explicating those facets of existence that we recognise as constitutive of the human experience; our being as both mind and body; our presence in temporality; our religious and/or spiritual being; our sense of self and other ; and our gendered being or, more importantly, the lived, bodily experience of being a woman, the second sex , in a patriarchal society. By exploring the regions of being that are made visible in the Beckettian landscape, this work layers phenomenological philosophy with, amongst others, philosophies of theatre aesthetics, of mind and of gender, and offers forth theories that contribute to the development of research in the fields of Beckett and phenomenology/existentialism and Beckett and women/gender/feminism , whilst adding something both original and tangible to the vast spectrum that encompasses Beckett and philosophy , even theatre/literature and philosophy , as a whole.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this study was to investigate man's attunement when happy. Having established a question which would elicit actual experiences of this phenomenon, the researcher collected sixty-four written accounts of the experience. Of these he chose the twelve psychologically richest accounts and, having interviewed each of these twelve subjects to push their written descriptions to their limits, he analysed the resulting protocols using an empirical phenomenological method. The general structure of the experience of happiness suggested that happiness emerged as a special openness against a background where individuals were less than happy. During happiness there is a breaking through the bonds of the individual's mundane, everyday disclosure of the world. It transports the individual to an existence in which the ruptures which form part of man's lived relationships to himself, to his fellowman, to the world and to life itself are healed, and in which life is lived in increased harmony with all. There is a coming home to the self, a move toward wholeness which is enlivened bodily by a radiating vibrancy (often a tingling lightness and brightness), as the individual expands with energy, power, self-confidence and mastery, and rises above the troubles of life. This structure of happiness was dialogued with the writing of existential philosophers and psychologists, psychoanalysts and humanists

Streszczenie:
This study described the meaning of the wedding day as experienced by brides who were planning their upcoming weddings. Topics that were addressed included: an investigation into the meaning of the wedding day as created by young women who were planning their wedding days; with a focus on the role of traditions and rituals in the creation of the meaning day; and an examination of how significant others were involved in the creation of the meaning behind the wedding day. Brides were recruited from a variety of sources, including students and attendants at a local bridal fair. Criteria for inclusion required that brides were young, heterosexual women between the ages of 21 and 30, were formally engaged to be married, had a specific wedding date set within 12 months, and had never been married. Fourteen brides participated in interviews. Giorgi's (1985, 1997) phenomenological procedure was used for data analysis. Findings revealed six essences that influenced the brides' created meaning of the wedding day. The six essential findings were labeled using concepts from symbolic interaction theory: symbols, role-taking, role-making, definition of self definition of the situation, and definition of other. Within each of the six essences, several themes emerged. Symbols were a predominant influence on the creation of the wedding day. Symbols were described when brides discussed the various traditions and rituals they were adopting, adapting, and avoiding as they planned their weddings. Brides went about role-taking and role-making in an effort to create their wedding days. Brides were guided in their role-taking and role-making through their use of wedding documents, such as bridal magazines. Brides' desired wedding days were also shaped around the definitions they carried of themselves and their definitions of the situation that they hoped to create on their wedding day. Several significant others were involved in the creation of the meaning of the wedding. Significant others were found to be both helpful and unhelpful to the brides. Overall, the meaning of the wedding day represented the influence of these six essences as the bride went about planning the wedding day she hoped to create.
