Abstract Based on the data from the Kodaikanal and Mount Wilson observatories, we investigate the relationships of the tilt angles of sunspot groups, including the mean tilt angle and the tilt-angle scatter, during the declining phase with the parameters of the next solar cycle (SC). The main findings are summarized in the following three points. (1) During the declining phase, the correlation between the mean tilt angle and the tilt-angle scatter is statistically insignificant. (2) Six quantities measured during the declining phase show significant anticorrelations with the strength and amplitude of the next SC and positive correlations with the duration of the ascending phase of the next SC: the standard deviation of the tilt angles, the rms tilt angle, the mean absolute value of the tilt angles, the area-weighted absolute value of the tilt angles, the latitude-weighted absolute value of the tilt angles, and the area- and latitude-weighted absolute value of the tilt angles. (3) The correlations of the mean tilt angle, the area-weighted tilt angle, the latitude-weighted tilt angle, and the area- and latitude-weighted tilt angle during the declining phase with the strength, amplitude, and duration of the ascending phase of the next SC are statistically insignificant. These findings demonstrate that the modulation of the parameters of the next SC by the tilt-angle scatter during the declining phase plays a vital role in regulating SC variability.

The two-phase approximation in small-angle scattering is well known and is still the dominant approach to data analysis. The intensity scattered at small angles is proportional to the second power of the difference between the scattering densities of the two phases. Nevertheless, scattering contrast variation techniques are widely used, and they are obviously suitable for multiphase systems or systems with gradually varying scattering density, since if no parasitic scattering contributions are present the scattering contrast variation would only change a proportionality coefficient. It is shown here that the scattered intensity at small angles of a multiphase system can be represented as a sum of the scattering of two-phase systems and terms describing interference between all pairs of phases. Extracting two-phase scattering patterns from multiphase samples by contrast variation is possible. These two-phase patterns can be treated with the usual small-angle scattering formalism. The case of gradually varying scattering density is also discussed.

In this paper, a new closed loop hybrid phase shift control is proposed for dual active bridge (DAB) converter with variable input voltage. The extended phase shift (EPS) control is applied when load gets heavy enough and the secondary side phase shift angle decreases to zero. When this modified DAB converter operates at light loads, the triple phase shift (TPS) modulation method is applied, and the added control freedom is the secondary phase shift angle between the two-secondary side switching legs. The hybrid phase shift control (HPS) scheme is a combination of EPS and TPS modulations, and it provides a very simple closed form implementation for the primary and secondary side phase shift angles. Depending on the application by changing the phase shift angles we can achieve Buck or Boost operation. A characteristic table feedback control method has been used for closed loop operation. By using 1D look up table the proposed DAB converter provides constant 400V for any given input voltage.

Background and Objectives: The phase angle, calculated by bioelectrical impedance analysis, can help elucidate the pathology of patients with idiopathic dropped head syndrome (IDHS) and explain the motor dysfunction associated with the horizontal gaze disorder. The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of phase angle in IDHS patients and the relationship between the phase angle and the severity of horizontal gaze disorder. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 43 female patients with IDHS and 69 healthy female volunteers. A multi-frequency segmental body composition analyzer was used to calculate body composition parameters, including whole-body and lower extremity phase angles. Propensity score (PS) matching analysis was performed to compare the body composition parameters between the IDHS and healthy groups. Variables that determine the PS were identified by correlation analysis, using the whole-body phase angle as the dependent variable. In addition, correlation analysis was performed between the severity of horizontal gaze disorder as assessed by McGregor’s slope (McGS), phase angle, and other body composition parameters. Results: Unadjusted group comparisons showed no significant difference in whole-body and lower extremity phase angles between the IDHS and healthy groups. PS matching created a total of 38 matched pairs for age, height, and fat-free mass index. Although the comparison between groups of matched samples showed no significant difference in the whole-body phase angle, the lower extremity phase angle in the IDHS group was significantly lower than that in the healthy group (p = 0.033). Correlation analysis showed significant negative correlations only between McGS and whole-body (r = −0.31, p = 0.043) and lower extremity phase angle (r = −0.39, p = 0.009) in the IDHS group. Conclusions: Abnormal body composition of the lower extremities were observed in IDHS patients. Furthermore, it was suggested that horizontal gaze disorder in IDHS patients is associated with whole-body and lower extremity phase angles.

The input-output displacement relations of two Cardan joints arranged in series on a driveline has been investigated in detail, including the effects of unequal joint angles, the phase angle between the two Cardan joints and also such manufacturing tolerance errors as nonright angle moving link lengths and offset joint axes. A combined Newton-Raphson method and Davidon-Fletcher-Powell optimization algorithm using dual-number coordinate-transformation matrices was employed to perform the analysis. An experiment was conducted to validate the results of the analysis. The apparatus consisted of a double-Cardan-joint driveline whose rotations were measured by optical shaft encoders that were sampled by a computer data-acquisition system. The equipment was arranged so that the phase angle between the joints and the offset angles between the shafts at each of the two joints could be readily varied. The “relative phase angle,” the difference between the phase angle of the two joints and the angle between the planes defined by the input and intermediate and the intermediate and output shafts, was found to be the significant factor. If the offset angles at both Cardan joints are equal, the double-Cardan-joint driveline functions as a constant-velocity coupling when the magnitude of the relative phase angle is zero. If the offset angles at the two Cardan joints are unequal, a condition prevailing in the important front-wheel-drive automobile steering-column application, then fluctuation in output velocity for a constant input velocity is minimized although not eliminated for zero relative phase angle.

Background and Objectives: Leg extension angle is important for increasing the propulsion force during gait and is a meaningful indicator for evaluating gait quality in stroke patients. Although leg extension angle during late stance might potentially also affect lower limb kinematics during the swing phase, the relationship between these two remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between leg extension angle and knee flexion angle during pre-swing and swing phase in post-stroke gait. Materials and Methods: Twenty-nine stroke patients walked along a 16 m walkway at a self-selected speed. Tilt angles and acceleration of pelvis and paretic lower limb segments were measured using inertial measurement units. Leg extension angle, consisting of a line connecting the hip joint with the ankle joint, hip and knee angles, and increments of velocity during pre-swing and swing phase were calculated. Correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between these parameters. Partial correlation analysis adjusted by the Fugl-Meyer assessment-lower limb (FMA-LL) was also performed. Results: On the paretic side, leg extension angle was positively correlated with knee flexion angle during the swing phase (r = 0.721, p < 0.001) and knee flexion angle and increments of velocity during the pre-swing phase (r = 0.740–0.846, p < 0.001). Partial correlation analysis adjusted by the FMA-LL showed significant correlation between leg extension angle and knee flexion angle during the swing phase (r = 0.602, p = 0.001) and knee flexion angle and increments of velocity during the pre-swing phase (r = 0.655–0.886, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Leg extension angle affected kinematics during the swing phase in post-stroke gait regardless of the severity of paralysis, and was similar during the pre-swing phase. These results would guide the development of effective gait training programs that enable a safe and efficient gait for stroke patients.

Subject and Purpose. The phase shifters intended for controlling the phase of radio signals are widely used in ultra-high frequency technology, communication systems, radar, and a variety of measuring and special-purpose radio equipment. Designers of phased array antennas face the need of providing for broad beam scanning angles and high antenna gains, which leads to the necessity of greatly increasing the number of array elements, each of which is to be controlled by a phase shifter. Therefore, the development and creation of quick-acting phase shifters is an urgent task. The purpose of this work is to develop high-speed, controllable phase shifters for performing phase angle adjustments and thus provide, at an acceptable cost, for desirable parameters of phased antenna arrays, frequency stabilizing systems of magnetrons, etc. Methods and Methodology. The functional diagram of the proposed quick-acting, controllable phase shifter has been analyzed mathematically and modelled numerically. Results. The controllable phase shifter can be successfully implemented through the use of two parallel-connected resonators at the input of a specific receiver. Analysis of the signal amplitude and phase at the output of the phase shifter in dependence on the values at the input confirms the possibility of adjusting the phase of the output signal over a wide range of angles. Conclusions. A design concept of quick-acting, controllable phase shifters for producing adjustable phase angles has been developed. The device can be employed in phased antenna arrays or frequency stabilizing systems as a means of improving their operation parameters and reducing their cost at that.

Le but principal de ce travail a ete d'elaborer un nouveau formalisme, celui des etats quantiques action angle (generalisation des etats coherents de l'oscillateur harmonique), dans lequel le transport classique apparait comme un cas particulier du transport quantique. Cela a permis non seulement d'etablir plusieurs derivations quantiques inedites de l'angle de hannay, mais aussi d'apporter des eclairages originaux sur la relation entre la phase de berry et l'angle de hannay a travers l'introduction des notions de principe variationnel moyenne ou de minimisation de metriques sur les etats quantiques ou les trajectoires classiques. Le rapport entre la phase de berry et l'angle de hannay a egalement ete examine dans le cas des systemes grassmaniens

This thesis describes the development of an astrometric facility at the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) with an aim to measure at high precision the relative astrometry of bright close binary stars and ultimately to detect the presence of exoplanets within those binary star systems through observations of the systems’ perturbed motion. At the core of the facility is a new beam combiner that is phase-referenced to an existing primary beam combiner in the visible wave- length regime. The latter provides post-processed fringe-tracking information to the former for fringe stabilization and coherent integration of pre-recorded stellar fringes using newly developed data reduction software. Interference fringe packets of a binary star are recorded alternately; first the fringe packet of the primary, then the secondary, finally back to the primary again. The measurement of the fringe packet separation is facilitated by an air-filled differential delay line and a network of interferometer-based metrology systems. Characterizations and initial astronomical observations carried out with the dual beam combiner setup demonstrated for the first time the success of the dual-star phase-referencing technique in visible (~1μm) wavelengths. The current astrometric precision is larger than 100μas while the long term astrometric accuracy is yet to be characterized. In a parallel development, a complementary observing method using only the primary beam combiner is also demonstrated in this thesis. Relative astrometry of binary stars up to ~0.8” separation with this technique has been demonstrated to have precision of better than 100μas. A simple detection limit analysis based on a list of target binary stars estimates up to two exoplanet detections can be achieved with SUSI if the new astrometric facility attains precision of 10μas while the primary beam combiner operates at its designed peak performance. Finally, one new stellar companion was resolved and a preliminary astrometry for another suspected companion was estimated from the astronomical observation data collected throughout the course of this thesis.

A series of compressor blades, aligned as a cascade, situated in a transonic flow has been studied using a two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. An objective of the research was to discover, using a CFD code, how the total aerodynamic stability of a compressor cascade was affected by blade pitching oscillations, vibrating at certain interblade phase angles and oscillation frequencies. The analysis focused on the way in which the interblade phase angle, a, is likely to affect the stability of the cascade over a range of oscillation frequencies between 200Hz and 1 OOOHz, for a series of interblade phase angles between 0° and 180°. Two turbulence models were assessed to determine the sensitivity of turbulence coding, namely the Baldwin-Lomax and Johnson-King models. A validation of the CFD code against published data from the NASA Lewis Research Centre was carried out. The interaction of the passage shock, formed between the blades, and on the positive pressure surface of the blade was shown to have the greatest influence on the aerodynamic stability of the cascade; the shocks formed on the suction side had a somewhat smaller effect. Any flow separation, on either the suction or pressure surfaces, was also shown to decrease cascade stability.

Pour régler de façon continue le débit du réseau de distribution dans un récepteur triphasé résistif, à l'aide d'un dispositif présentant de très faibles pertes, il est usuel de disposer un gradateur fonctionnant en "angle de phase" entre la source et la charge. Il est presque toujours nécessaire, dans les équipements de forte puissance, d'ajouter un transformateur. L'analyse du fonctionnement de l'ensemble transformateur - gradateur - charge est très complexe, pour plusieurs raisons :- D'abord, ces dispositifs fonctionnent en commutation libre, c'est à dire que l'on ne peut commander que la mise en conduction des thyristors. - Ensuite, la présence du transformateur modifie totalement, par le couplage magnétique qu'il introduit entre les phases, le comportement du gradateur. En effet, les instants d'extinction des thyristors ne sont pas uniquement dépendant des tensions d'alimentation, mais à la fois du couplage des enroulements, de l'emplacement des composants, du niveau de la charge, ainsi que de l'état magnétique du transformateur. La première partie du mémoire est consacrée à l'étude analytique du fonctionnement en régime permanent. La deuxième partie concerne la comparaison des divers montages, en régime permanent, mais également face à un défaut comme la rupture d'une résistance de charge. Une méthode par simulation est alors introduite, elle permet d'élaborer la meilleure "loi de commande" du gradateur disposé dans une structure donnée.

AbstractUnder complicated fatigue loading conditions, cracks initiate nd grow in the arbitrary direction from corrosion pits in the aerospace equipment. The monitoring of crack propagation angle is very important for the safety assessment of the aerospace equipment, which is still a challenge by the conventional structural health monitoring (SHM) method. In this paper, a novel crack angle quantitative monitoring method is presented based on the rotating alternating current field measurement (RACFM). A theoretical model of the crack angle measuring method is established to analyze the perturbation principle of the induced electromagnetic field. The relationships between the angle, length and depth of the crack and the Bz signal are analyzed. The probe and testing system are established, and experiments are carried out. The results show that the phase of the Bz signal has a linear relationship with the crack angle for the same crack, and the amplitude of the Bz signal can correct the crack angle for the different cracks. The angle of fatigue cracks can be quantitatively measured by the Bz phase difference method based on the RACFM.

This is the final report summarizing work completed during the first phase of the PRCI study on large bore two stroke lean burn integral compressor engine response to variable natural gas compositions for the purposes of engine control development. Accomplished tasks include the completion of a detailed literature review covering the research topic, a parametric study of laminar flame speeds and ignition delays for binary methane and ethane mixtures up to 30%, and a GT-Power engine model of the Colorado State GMV-4 research engine with associated validation data from CSU�s variable ethane effects study. The chemistry of the combustion reaction is crucial to accurate modeling; laminar flame speeds and ignition delays as function of composition were determined from the solutions to published chemical kinetics mechanisms GRI-Mech3.0 and Saudi Aramco Mech1.3, respectively. The Wiebe coefficients correlated to variations in ethane composition and spark timing were regressed from the crank angle resolved heat release rates. The Wiebe coefficients are the most significant achievement of this phase of the project, since they quantify the heat release as a function of composition. At this time, the Wiebe parameters only reflect the relative changes in the model since certain aspect of the models geometry are pending resolution. Future phases of the project could use the developed GT-Power model and Wiebe coefficients for development of control schemes that maintain emissions, speed and torque limits, and maximize thermal efficiency during a variable fuel composition event.

This project was produced to evaluate the performance of focused beams in sizing and positioning defects in pipeline girth welds. The sound beams from standard flat transducers were focused using acoustic lenses. Two types of plastics, having different sound velocities are used in the design of these lenses. One is used for the lens and the other for the wedge. The profile of the lens/wedge boundary was designed to focus the sound at a selected depth. The design takes into account the beam angle, beam diameter, focal point and working range required. The effects of test surface curvature were also incorporated into the design. This project was conducted in three phases using sample welds containing real defects, such as root cracks, slag and lack of sidewall fusion. In Phase III the individual defect size predictions were compared to the actual defects found during destructive examination. Only the readings where the signal sources could be positively identified as defects by breaking open or sectioning were included. All measurements were made to the nearest 0.5 mm (0.02 inches).

Recent concerns regarding global warming and energy security have accelerated research and developmental efforts to produce biofuels from agricultural and forestry residues, and energy crops. Anaerobic digestion is a promising process for producing biogas-biofuel from biomass feedstocks. However, there is a need for new reactor designs and operating considerations to process fibrous biomass feedstocks. In this research project, the multiphase flow behavior of biomass particles was investigated. The objective was accomplished through both simulation and experimentation. The simulations included both particle-level and bulk flow simulations. Successful computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of multiphase flow in the digester is dependent on the accuracy of constitutive models which describe (1) the particle phase stress due to particle interactions, (2) the particle phase dissipation due to inelastic interactions between particles and (3) the drag force between the fibres and the digester fluid. Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations of Homogeneous Cooling Systems (HCS) were used to develop a particle phase dissipation rate model for non-spherical particle systems that was incorporated in a two-fluid CFDmultiphase flow model framework. Two types of frictionless, elongated particle models were compared in the HCS simulations: glued-sphere and true cylinder. A new model for drag for elongated fibres was developed which depends on Reynolds number, solids fraction, and fibre aspect ratio. Schulze shear test results could be used to calibrate particle-particle friction for DEM simulations. Several experimental measurements were taken for biomass particles like olive pulp, orange peels, wheat straw, semolina, and wheat grains. Using a compression tester, the breakage force, breakage energy, yield force, elastic stiffness and Young’s modulus were measured. Measurements were made in a shear tester to determine unconfined yield stress, major principal stress, effective angle of internal friction and internal friction angle. A liquid fludized bed system was used to determine critical velocity of fluidization for these materials. Transport measurements for pneumatic conveying were also assessed. Anaerobic digestion experiments were conducted using orange peel waste, olive pulp and wheat straw. Orange peel waste and olive pulp could be anaerobically digested to produce high methane yields. Wheat straw was not digestible. In a packed bed reactor, anaerobic digestion was not initiated above bulk densities of 100 kg/m³ for peel waste and 75 kg/m³ for olive pulp. Interestingly, after the digestion has been initiated and balanced methanogenesis established, the decomposing biomass could be packed to higher densities and successfully digested. These observations provided useful insights for high throughput reactor designs. Another outcome from this project was the development of low cost devices to measure methane content of biogas for off-line (US$37), field (US$50), and online (US$107) applications.
