While much has been written on the Yiddish poet Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, there is a paucity of critical material which deals with the issue of persona in his poetry. This is unfortunate since the use of persona takes centre stage in Halpern's oeuvre. This work will discuss the issue of persona in Halpern's poems, and will focus specifically on one of Halpern's personae: "Moyshe-Leyb." I will begin with an overview of the relevant literary criticism on Halpern, and a discussion of the major themes found in his poetry. Furthermore, I will discuss Halpern's connection to literary modernism, and this movement's paradigm of persona. Finally, I will examine Halpern's possible motivations for choosing a persona with his own name, and the themes and issues found in these poems.

Sociala medier, och särskilt Facebook, skiljer sig mycket från de äldre medierna (tidningar, radio, TV etc.) då det är plattformar där “vanliga människor”, utan journalistisk skolning, har möjlighet att uttrycka sig inför stora publiker. Det sker en form av paradigmskifte i vad som anses retoriskt effektivt och därmed hur vi ska presentera oss själva. Jag ser att rollen en administratör tar på en Facebooksida skiljer sig mycket från rollen en journalist på en tidning får när de skriver. De presenterar sig på skilda sätt och Facebookadministratören håller sig i regel mer personlig och nära sina läsare. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur retoriska strategier för självpresentation, ethos och persona används idag inom Facebook som är ett relativt modernt medium. Det är en casestudy med den statliga myndigheten Livrustkammarens Facebooksida som exempel. Detta för att de skapat ett rykte kring sig om att vara roliga och effektiva i sin kommunikation.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur svenska ståuppkomiker med politiska budskap skapar en komisk scenpersona samtidigt som de behåller trovärdigheten som är nödvändig för att budskapen ska tas på allvar. För att göra det analyserar jag ståuppföreställningar utifrån de retoriska begreppen ethos och persona samt genrespecifika begrepp som berör skapandet av en scenpersonlighet. Undersökningen visar att en vanlig strategi är att skapa humor genom att förlöjliga meningsmotsåndare och på så vis framställa sig själv som trovärdig i ett motsatsförhållande. Ironi gör också att komikern aldrig behöver ta på sig en allvarlig persona, utan endast behöver antyda åsikter och budskap samtidigt som de framställs med humor.

The aim of this student thesis is to achieve a translation of an excerpt of a previously untranslated book from English to Swedish. The translated material has been collected from the autobiographical book Kingdom of Fear by the author Hunter S. Thompson and consists partly of paratexts. The translation has been performed in accordance with a principle that was formed within the theoretical frames of Gideon Toury’s Descriptive Translation Studies. Accordingly, the discussion about the translation is based on the terms adequacy and acceptancy. The paper includes analyses of relevant aspects of the translated material, for example genre, paratext, and persona related problems. To illustrate the translation process, comments on the translation are also enclosed, which deal with solutions regarding grammatical and syntactical changes, imagery and cultural-specific expressions.
Syftet med detta examensarbete är att åstadkomma en översättning av ett utdrag från ett tidigare oöversatt verk från engelska till svenska. Det översatta materialet är hämtat från det autobiografiska verket Kingdom of Fear av författaren Hunter S. Thompson och består bland annat av paratexter. Översättningen har utförts efter en princip som formulerats inom de teoretiska ramarna för Gideon Tourys Descriptive Translation Studies. Därmed utgår diskussionen kring översättningen från termerna adekvans och acceptans. Arbetet innefattar analyser på relevanta aspekter av det översatta materialet, exempelvis genre, paratext och personaproblematik. För att åskådliggöra översättningsprocessen medföljer även översättningskommentarer som behandlar lösningar angående grammatiska och syntaktiska ändringar, bildspråk och kulturspecifika uttryck.

Ce travail se propose d’étudier la représentation du masque et l’influence de ce concept dans l’œuvre d’Amélie Nothomb, notamment pour lever le voile sur la monstruosité supposée de son écriture. Après avoir décrit le champ littéraire belge francophone et les différents courants littéraires dans lesquels semble évoluer la romancière, il s’intéresse tout d’abord aux masques utilisés par ses personnages pour tromper leur entourage et se tromper eux-mêmes, ainsi qu’à la vision du monde conjointement proposée au lecteur. Dans un second temps, il présente le masque comme une constance de la voix nothombienne, qu’elle se manifeste au travers de l’écriture thématique et stylistique de la romancière ou des émissaires constitués par ses personnages littéraires ou son personnage public. Enfin, il examine l’esthétique proprement caricaturale et grotesque des masques nothombiens, apte à faire basculer l’intrigue dans un cycle de type carnavalesque
This thesis proposes to examine the representation of the mask and the influence of this concept in Amélie Nothomb’s work, in particular to throw light on the unproven monstrousness of her writing. Before the description of the Belgian French languaged literature and the different literary currents in which the novelist seems to belong to, it takes an interest in masks used by her characters to deceive their surroundings or deceive themselves, and in the world vision that is proposed to the reader. Secondly it describes mask as a permanent feature of the Amélie Nothomb’s voice, in the novelist’s thematic and stylistic writing or in her public or literary characters. Then, it examines the caricatural and grotesque aesthetic of the Amélie Nothomb’s masks, which can make the story beginning a carnival cycle

'In Two Minds' is a novel of false beliefs. Set in contemporary Sydney, it deals with the relationship between two sisters in their late thirties, Kara and Linda Hille. Told in the second person singular from the point of view of the elder sister, Linda, it is based around the neurological delusion of the younger sibling, Kara. Kara wrongly believes that their mother, Stella, has been replaced by an impostor, 'Mrs. Whitegloves'. For the greater part, the narrative 'you' relates events in the sisters' lives and deals with issues such as the consequences of condoned child abuse, the dilemma of human cloning and the future of 'the brand' in the light of contemporary global marketing. Linda, an advertising executive, struggles with a formidable work-project, an account that is lost to a competitor, and the mistaken belief that she is responsible for her sister's plight. Shocking graffiti about herself, which appears at the same time as she wins an advertising award, proves to be the catalyst that brings beneficial change to her life. Through the tragedy of confronting her sister's devastation and her own challenges, Linda leaves her job, believing this will allow her to start again - differently. In the final chapter, the difference is registered in a shift from the second person to the consolidated first person method of narration. ABSTRACT EXEGESIS The dissertation 'A Singular Voice' documents aspects of authorial, psychoanalytical and literary significance in the creation of a fiction which draws on personal material confrontational to the writer. It also discusses some wider (non-fictional and other) uses of the narrative 'you' in order to establish the literary tradition in which the novel 'In Two Minds' may be situated. This disseration examines the use of the second-person singular pronoun 'you' as narrator, mainly in contemporary fiction. It concentrates on the ways in which the narrative 'you' was employed to achieve a 'cover', mask or persona for the 'I' behind the text in the novel 'In Two Minds', and explains why it was necessary to seek such subterfuge. It describes how certain grammatical and rhetorical resources were used to build and maintain 'cover', while at the same time allowing the narrative 'you' to express a particular aspect of the fictional protagonist, address the reader, and sustain the story of which it is the intradiegetic narratee. Related narrative elements include construction of the characters through the use of the narrative 'you', for example the narcissistic mother, Stella; the phantom double, 'Mrs. Whitegloves'; the sufferer of Capgras' delusion, Kara; and the ultimate bearer of the singular 'you' voice, the protagonist Linda.

Politikerveckan i Almedalen har länge vart ett ämne i debatten om hur det svenska politiska klimatet har utvecklats. Under de senaste åren har Almedalen i medierna både hyllats som en unik demokratisk mötesplats och kritiserats för att vara ett elitistiskt ”jippo”. I takt med detta har ytterligare en politikervecka vuxit fram, Järvaveckan, med ledmotivet att minska avståndet mellan folk och folkvalda. Liksom i Almedalen, är ett av huvudmomenten på Järvaveckan partiledarnas tal som framförs en gång per kväll och samtliga svenska partiledare närvarar vid evenemanget. I denna uppsats jämförs de två politikerveckorna genom att undersöka vilka partiledarna riktar sig till i sina tal i Almedalen och på Järvaveckan. Analysen utgår från Blacks teori om The Second Persona som konkretiserar en idé om att varje talare har en tilltänkt publik i åtanke när dennes tal ska framföras. I artikeln diskuterar Black vidare om att denna tilltänkta publik kan uppmärksammas genom att undersöka talarens argumentation och stilistiska uttryck. Med inspiration från Blacks syn på argumentation har denna undersökning byggt på en analys som sökt efter argumentative tokens utifrån användningen av allmänna och specifika topiker på samtliga tal av partiledarna både i Almedalen och på Järvaveckan.  Av den topikanalys som förts har sedan generella tilltänkta publiker tagit form genom att applicera allmänna och specifika topiker på partiledarnas gemensamma och återkommande argumentationer. Dessa två tilltänkta publiker jämfördes sedan med varandra för att undersöka skillnaderna dem emellan. Resultaten av denna analys visar att partiledarna riktar sig till två olika tilltänkta publiker på de respektive veckorna, samt att dessa två tilltänkta publiker skiljer sig på vissa betydande sätt. Medan den tilltänkta publiken på Järvaveckan förmodas vara tämligen oinsatt i det svenska politiska klimatet och de olika partiernas ideologier, förväntas den tilltänkta publiken i Almedalen vara politiskt välmedvetna. Den tilltänkta publiken på Järvaveckan bor dessutom på den plats som Järvaveckan utspelar sig på eller andra s.k. ”utsatta områden” medan den tilltänkta publiken i Almedalen är en heterogen skara av människor runt om i landet. Slutligen ger denna analys ytterligare belägg för den tidigare forskning som förts gällande mediernas inflytande på de politiska talen i Almedalen. Denna undersökning visar alltså att politikerna i hög grad förutsätter att publiken på de två politiska evenemangen är olika och att talen därefter skräddarsys för att anpassas till respektive publik.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Seeking to explore modes of self-representation in women’s life writing and the ways in which these subjects manipulate the autobiographical ‘I’ to write about gender, the body, race and ethnic related issues, this thesis interrogates the autobiographies of three renegade women whose works were birthed out of the de/colonial South African context between 1854-1948. The chosen texts are: Marina King’s Sunrise to Evening Star: My Seventy Years in South Africa (1935), Melina Rorke’s Melina Rorke: Her Amazing Experiences in the Stormy Nineties of South-African History (1938), and two memoirs by Petronella van Heerden, Kerssnuitsels (1962) and Die 16de Koppie (1965). My analysis is underpinned by relevant life writing and feminist criticism, such as the notion of female autobiographical “embodiment” (239) and the ‘I’s reliance on “relationality” (248) as discussed in the work of Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson (Reading Autobiography). I further draw on Judith Butler’s concept of “performativity” (Bodies that Matter 234) in my analysis in order to suggest that there is a performative aspect to the female ‘I’ in these texts. The aim of this thesis is to illustrate how these self-representations of women can be read as counter-conventional, speaking out against stereotypical perceptions and conventions of their time and in literatures (fiction and criticism) which cast women as tractable, compliant pertaining to patriarchal oversight, as narrow-minded and apathetic regarding achieving notoriety and prominence beyond their ascribed position in their separate societies. I argue that these works are representative of alternative female subjectivities and are examples of South African women’s life writing which lie ‘dusty’ and forgotten in archives; voices that are worthy of further scholarly research which would draw the stories of women’s lives back into the literary consciousness.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In ‘n poging om metodes van self-uitbeelding te bespreek en die manier waarop die ‘ek’ van vroulike ego-tekste manipuleer om sodoende te skryf oor geslagsrolle, die liggaam, ras en ander etniese kwessies, ondersoek hierdie verhandeling die outbiografieë van drie onkonvensionele vrouens se werk, gebore vanuit die de/koloniale konteks in Suid-Afrika tussen 1854-1948. Essa dissertação de mestrado interpreta quatro obras da literatura infanto-juvenil, focando sua análise nas personagens femininas. Busca-se aqui entender porque determinadas narrativas tornaram-se atemporais e clássicas, constituindo uma base para a construção de outras narrativas. Assim, além de um levantamento histórico da vida social feminina e discussão da construção narrativa do conto de fadas, o estudo está pautado em uma interpretação psicanalítica das obras participantes do corpus.
This dissertation of master degree makes a interpretation of four young people literature`s work, but the focus is the female persona. We search to understand how some narratives became classics, and now they are the base for the construction to others narratives. Then, there is a history research from the women living and how the fairies tales are made, but the studies and interpretations of the corpus of this dissertation come from the psychology vision.

Este proyecto pretende el análisis de dos obras de ciencia ficción de la escritora española Rosa Montero, Lágrimas en la lluvia y El peso del corazón. Teniendo como eje principal el proceso de obtención de la identidad de una posthumana, la protagonista de ambas obras literarias, Bruna Husky. Si bien la naturaleza posthumana ha desafiado y quebrantado la noción de identidad en sus individuos, mediante la experiencia de una vida alrededor de otros que pueden formar una parafamilia se obtiene un espejo visionario de sí mismo necesario para la obtención de dicha identidad. En el primer libro, esta posthumana se halla en los demás y comienza un proceso de aceptación que culmina con el segundo libro a través de la expresión de sus sentimientos. Bruna Husky se va descubriendo, aceptando y se llega a querer en todo este proceso. Mediante el análisis de estas obras de ciencia ficción hemos trazado los confines necesarios para hallar la plenitud emocional en un individuo al buscar su identidad.

In the context of Holocaust Literature, translation has gradually become a useful tool through which personal narratives of the Shoah can reach new audiences. Translators of testimony thus take on the role of conveyors of meaning and, ultimately, have the crucial responsibility of transmitting the victim’s authentic experience and ‘self’, while also bridging the gap that inevitably exists between past events and witness writing. The aim of this thesis is, then, to analyse the key issues that translating testimony entails in terms of transmission, by means of proposing an English translation to the first four chapters of the Italian Shoah memoir "Una Bambina in Fuga – Diari e lettere di un’ebrea mantovana al tempo" della Shoah by Lidia Gallico.

This rhetorical study examines the use of myths and the identification process in the Nordic resistance movement's (in Swedish ”Nordiska motståndsrörelsen” or NMR) party program. NMR is a national socialist organization and political party in Sweden. I have used Burke's view of myths and identification and supplemented the study by examining which recipient NMR is trying to reach, in accordance with Black's theory of the second persona. The study was carried out through a myth analysis based on Burke's topoi he found by analyzing Hitler's "Mein kampf" which consists of inborn dignity, projection device, symbolic rebirth and commercial use. The methodological approach to the identification analysis is based on Edward C. Appel's identification analysis called "PAIVE" which stands for pieties, allegiances, interests, values and experiences. The results show that NMR uses myths to a large extent to build narratives about races, common enemies and solutions for a utopian society. The identification markers which exists are mainly based on dichotomies between "us" and the established enemy. NMR also uses several metaphors to convince the reader of their worldview. The study has been done to gain a better understanding of how racist organizations influence us with their rhetoric so that we can more easily see through their “rhetorical tools” and then protect ourselves against them.

Gerald Dworkin's influential account of Personal Autonomy offers the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) Authenticity - the condition that one identify with one's beliefs, desires and values after a process of critical reflection, and (ii) Procedural Independence - the identification in (i) must not be "influenced in ways which make the process of identification in some way alien to the individual" (Dworkin 1989:61). I argue in this thesis that there are cases which fulfil both of Dworkin's conditions, yet are clearly not cases of autonomy. Specifically, I argue that we can best assess the adequacy of Dworkin's account of autonomy through literature, because it provides a unique medium for testing his account on the very terms he sets up for himself - ie. that autonomy apply to, and make sense of, persons leading lives of a certain quality. The examination of two novels - Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day and Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady - shows that Dworkin's explanation of identification and critical reflection is inadequate for capturing their role in autonomy and that he does not pay enough attention to the role of external factors in preventing or supporting autonomy. As an alternative, I offer the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) critical reflection of a certain kind - radical reflection, and (ii) the ability to translate the results of (i) into action - competence. The novels demonstrate that both conditions are dependent upon considerations of the content of one's beliefs, desires, values etc. Certain of these will prevent or hinder the achievement of autonomy because of their content, so autonomy must be understood in relation to substantial considerations, rather than in purely formal terms, as Dworkin argues.

Though casual readers may often assume cookbooks are primarily reference materials,cookbooks actually offer readers a type of autobiography; I examine cookbooks as literary autobiographical acts by analyzing three celebrity chefs' cookbooks and the recent film, Julie and Julia. Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, illustrates several key autobiographical ideas, specifically Barthes' ideas of readerly and writerly texts and the distinction between an author and a persona. The film acts as a visual representation of the way a reader engages with a text and makes it a writerly text while successfully distinguishing between an author and a persona/narrator. After a brief review of autobiography theory through Julie and Julia, the three selected authors' work further magnifies the ideas. The first celebrity chef, David Lebovitz, uses a highly narrative style and incorporates numerous autobiographical details into his books. The second, Ina Garten, utilizes different methods of creating a persona, including photography. The third chef, Dorie Greenspan, uses the same methods used by Lebovitz and Garten, but has been replicated extensively in online baking groups, making her texts ideal for understanding the role of the reader in an autobiography. The work of these three authors illustrates well how autobiographies function and how readers can reiterate their own autobiographies through the books and food they consume.

This thesis is intended to demonstrate the existence of a vibrant cultural and literary life among the survivors of the Holocaust during their time as Displaced Persons (DPs) in Germany, Austria and Italy. It delineates their historical background, presents theoretical problems with which they may have been confronted, and explains the lack of previous academic research into their creative production. It then analyzes three representative literary journals from the period 1946 to 1949, when the DP population was at its peak: In Gang: khoydesh-zhurnal far literatur un kunst / khoydesh-zhurnal far literatur, kultur un gezelshaftlekhe problemen (In Progress: Monthly Journal of Literature and Art / Monthly Journal of Literature, Culture and Societal Problems), published in Rome between March 1947 and February 1949; Fun letstn khurbn: tsaytshrift far geshikhte fun yidishn lebn beysn natsi-rezhim (From the Last Extermination: Journal for the History of the Jewish People During the Nazi Regime), published in Munich between August 1946 and December 1948; and Shriftn far literatur, kunst un gezelshaftlekhe fragn (Writings for Literature, Art and Societal Questions), published in Kassel, Germany in January 1948. These journals were chosen because their editorial material reflected strong commitments to dealing with the political and especially the cultural issues of the day. These included the on-going examination of the possibility of Jewish cultural continuity, the drive for a Jewish state, and the attempt to come to terms with the immensity and horrors of the Holocaust. The thesis also includes an annotated bibliography of the contents of these three journals which is intended to improve their accessibility for future study.

This essay outlines the problems associated with the history and current absence of a gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronoun in the English language. The combination of the social and grammatical consequences of this language gap results in pronoun choices that are either politically incorrect or verbose. Experts’ attempts to fill this language gap have failed to take root on any widespread basis; but, interestingly, middle school children in Baltimore, Maryland created and started using “yo” as their own gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronoun. Stotko and Troyer’s (2007) study on this development sheds some light on exactly how students use “yo” as a third-person pronoun and proposes some theories regarding the origin of this change in language. This spontaneously produced gender-neutral pronoun has gained as much recognition as many gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronouns proposed by linguistic experts, perhaps as a result of children’s unique understanding of and ability to create language. This recent development indicates that common English speakers will likely spontaneously generate a solution to the current pronoun gap, although this will probably take some time to occur.

This doctoral thesis deals with the intellectual biography of the writer and journalist Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889, Figueres, 1956). It reconstructs the life and professional studies of the author, and the most important facets of his literature and journalism. In addition, it examines his literary texts. A special emphasis has been placed on the study of journalistic production of Brunet and on the analysis of the professional profile of the author. Examination and assessment of its production has been accurate, including a classification of the items and a comparison of his journalistic style with that of other contemporary authors, both Catalan (Josep Pla and Joseph M. de Sagarra), French (Charles Maurras and Léon Daudet) and English (GK Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc). The latter part of the work analysises the condition of "victor won" of Manuel Brunet after the Spanish Civil War, and how this author is an example of a whole generation of conservative Catalan nationalist witers who lived a difficult situation after the conflict.
Aquesta tesi doctoral aborda la biografia intel•lectual de l’escriptor i periodista Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889-Figueres 1956). Reconstrueix la trajectòria vital i professional de l’autor i estudia les facetes més rellevants de la seva producció literària i periodística. A més s’hi analitzen els seus textos literaris. S’ha posat especial èmfasi en l’estudi de la producció periodística de Brunet, així com en l’anàlisi del perfil professional de l’autor. L’examen i valoració de la seva producció ha estat detinguda, amb l’agrupació dels articles per àmbits temàtics i la comparació del seu estil amb el d’altres autors contemporanis, tant catalans (Josep Pla i Josep M. de Sagarra) com francesos (Charles Maurras i Léon Daudet) i anglesos (G. K. Chesterton i Hilaire Belloc). A l’última part del treball, s’aborda l’anàlisi de la condició de “vencedor vençut” de Manuel Brunet després de la guerra, i la forma com aquest autor és exemple de tota una generació d’escriptors catalanistes conservadors que van viure una situació complicada després del conflicte.

Vi lever i ett datadrivet samhälle där individer och tjänster ständigt loggar, spårar och behandlar information om sina egna eller andras beteenden. Informationsteknologi för datadriven beteendeförändring är centralt inom områdena Personal Informatics, en klass verktyg som hjälper individer att samla och undersöka personligt relevant information i självreflekterande syfte, samt Persuasive Design, som handlar om att känna till de bakomliggande orsakerna om vad som motiverar användare att agera och designa för att uppnå detta. Trots denna gemensamma huvudfokus bedrivs forskning kring områdena delvis separat. På grund av det stora överlappet mellan de två områdena behövs en översikt över vad som anses särskilt viktigt inom både Personal Informatics och Persuasive Design. Därför har vi genomfört en litteraturstudie för att på ett samlat sätt presentera den forskning som finns samt vilka generella lärdomar som belyses av forskare inom området. Resultatet visar mönster och skillnader i den gemensamma basen av litteratur, vilket möjliggör för djupare insikt i området. Vi diskuterar dessa mönster och möjligheter för vidare forskning av de resultat vi fått in samt vilka aspekter som anses särskilt viktiga.
We live in a world where products and services constantly try to affect our behavior. Data driven information technology for achieving behavior change is a central concept in Personal Informatics, a class of tools for assisting individuals in collecting and reviewing personally relevant information in self-reflective purposes, as well as Persuasive Design, which concerns the underlying factors behind motivating users into action and designing to achieve this. Despite these similarities in focus, these areas are partly researched as different fields. Because of the common grounds between the research areas, we believe an overview of the research literature concerning both Personal Informatics and Persuasive Design is important. For this reason we have performed a literature study so that we, in an organized manner, can present the aspects which are studied as well as insights highlighted by scientists in the area. We discuss patterns and possibilities for future research by the results we have collected as well as which aspects are considered especially important.

Contemporary Western society positions the individual as responsible for themselves and their bodies, with weight understood as being personally controllable. This study sought to explore the previously undiscussed relationship between obesity stigma and normative discontent by considering the idea that information challenging contemporary beliefs about obesity and weight might assist women of all sizes in feeling less accountable for their bodies. 70 women from Perth, Western Australia (M age= 26, SD=10.26) participated in this study. Participants were randomly allocated to three groups: 27 read an article prioritising scientific information that highlighted the powerful biological factors that can counteract weight loss attempts, 20 participants read an anecdotal article demonstrating the life-changing amounts of commitment required to maintain weight loss, and 23 participants readd a control article that represented contemporary views. Although expected, no significant differences were found between groups for antifat attitudes or responsibility for weight. The Scientific Evidence condition scored significantly higher than the Personal Story condition for worry about imperfection and significantly lower for overall appearance ratings. Unexpectedly, the Scientific Evidence condition scored significantly lower than the Control for self esteem. The results are discussed in the context of the complexity of delivering critical obesity messages that alleviate the burden of responsibility.

This is a study of women’s struggles in a system of patriarchy as portrayed in the works of Willa Cather, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison. The selected works include: My Antonia, The Color Purple, and Sula. Most commonly, in a patriarchal society, masculinity is usually defined by aggression and dominance, whereas femininity is portrayed as symbolic of passivity and submission. The need for women to be submissive in a male-dominated society caused many of the women characters to begin to suffer from lack of individuality and self-expression. The idea that women often evolve into different personalities because of their life experiences and struggles is at the center of the works selected for this study. In these particular works, the writers demonstrate that in spite of ethnicities and family backgrounds, many women living under the system of patriarchy become strong and outspoken because of their personal experiences and life challenges, while some of them become casualties of their struggles but learn from the experiences in order to become agents of social change.
