Streszczenie:
Collective behaviors such as synchronization, consensus, and flocking have been extensively investigated over the past decades. Many important results have been disseminated concerning the properties of complex networks. Recent technological development requires performance distribution, and this motivates the resolution to the issue of performance distributability. Albeit in a simple setup, this paper presents an attempt to attacking this problem. Important results are obtained for performance redistribution under both unitary and specified specifications. Constraints are also considered revealing the tight bounds on both nodes dynamics and graph elements for fulfilling the performance distribution and redistribution requirements. Examples are presented for verification of the claims.

Streszczenie:
The effectiveness of a machine learning model is impacted by the data representation used. Consequently, it is crucial to investigate robust representations for efficient machine learning methods. In this paper, we explore the link between data representations and model performance for inference tasks on spatial networks. We argue that representations which explicitly encode the relations between spatial entities would improve model performance. Specifically, we consider homogeneous and heterogeneous representations of spatial networks. We recognise that the expressive nature of the heterogeneous representation may benefit spatial networks and could improve model performance on certain tasks. Thus, we carry out an empirical study using Graph Neural Network models for two inference tasks on spatial networks. Our results demonstrate that heterogeneous representations improves model performance for down-stream inference tasks on spatial networks.

Recent developments in wireless sensor networks include their applications in safety, medical monitoring, environment monitoring and many more. Limited battery energy and efficient data delivery are most considered constraints for sensor nodes. Depletion of node battery ceases functioning of the node. The network lifetime can be enhanced with the help of Multi-Layer protocol (ML-MAC). This paper presents a practical approach including 3-dimensional deployment of sensor nodes and analyzes two different types of networks – homogeneous and heterogeneous WSNs. To analyze various QoS parameters, two types of nodes are considered in a heterogeneous network. The performance of both the networks is compared through simulations. The results show that ML-MAC performs better for a 3D heterogeneous WSNs.

The unprecedented acceleration in wireless industry strongly compels wireless operators to increase their data network throughput, capacity and coverage on emergent basis. In upcoming 5G heterogeneous networks inclusion of low power nodes (LPNs) like pico cells and femto cells for increasing network’s throughput, capacity and coverage are getting momentum. Addition of LPNs in such a massive level will eventually make a network populated in terms of base stations (BSs).The dense deployments of BSs will leads towards high operating expenditures (Op-Ex), capital expenditure (Cap-Ex) and most importantly high energy consumption in future generation networks. Recognizing theses networks issues this research work investigates data throughput and energy efficiency of 5G multi-tier heterogeneous network. The network is modeled using tools from stochastic geometry. Monte Carlo results confirmed that rational deployment of LPNs can contribute towards increased throughput along with better energy efficiency of overall network.

Streszczenie:
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a widely known short-range wireless technology used for various Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Recently, with the introduction of BLE mesh networks, this short-range barrier of BLE has been overcome. However, the added advantage of an extended range can come at the cost of a lower performance of these networks in terms of latency, throughput and reliability, as the core operation of BLE mesh is based on advertising and packet flooding. Hence, efficient management of the system is required to achieve a good performance of these networks and a smoother functioning in dense scenarios. As the number of configuration points in a standard mesh network is limited, this paper describes a novel set of standard compliant Quality of Service (QoS) extensions for BLE mesh networks. The resulting QoS features enable better traffic management in the mesh network, providing sufficient redundancy to achieve reliability whilst avoiding unnecessary packet flooding to reduce collisions, as well as the prioritization of certain traffic flows and the ability to control end-to-end latencies. The QoS-based system has been implemented and validated in a small-scale BLE mesh network and compared against a setup without any QoS support. The assessment in a small-scale test setup confirms that applying our QoS features can enhance these types of non-scheduled and random access networks in a significant way.

Internet protocol (IP)-based mobile systems are ushering new and faster technologies in wireless mobile networking. Therefore, the expectations from these network services with respect to data transfer rate and quality of service (QoS) are high. As such, meeting these requirements is the recent trend in modern wireless technologies. An important aspect regarding such improvements is the modification of handoff schemes between different networks. In this paper, we are focusing on the recent trends based on seamless handoff scheme in heterogeneous networks such as worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and long term evolution (LTE). The development of the session initiation protocol (SIP) Prior-INVITE scheme is an improvement on the earlier used SIP Re-INVITE method, which comes a long way in decreasing the average handoff delay. The performance analysis using software simulation on account of various parameters, such as handoff delay, cost of signaling and packet loss rate are accomplished in this work. The performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed scheme outperforms the ordinary cross-layer scheme and noncross-layer scheme in a vertical handover scenario.

The quality of service (QoS) evaluation of heterogeneous networks is an interesting area of research. The traditional QoS evaluation methods usually use a set of network-centric parameters for the performance evaluation of these networks. As a result, using such methods it is not possible to report a comprehensive performance review of networks that would include diverse applications and technologies. To resolve this issue, in this research, a novel approach has been proposed that applies dynamic significance weights and unified metrics of the QoS-related parameters to various applications and technologies present within a heterogeneous network. The result analysis shows that by applying this methodical approach, the performance evaluation of heterogeneous networks can be carried out systematically and efficiently.

In this work, we consider interference performance under direct data transmission in a heterogeneous network. The heterogeneous network consists of K-tier base stations and users, whose locations follow independent Poisson point processes (PPPs). Packet arrivals of users follow independent Bernoulli processes. Two different scheduling policies, round-robin (RR) and random scheduling (RS), are employed to all the Base Stations (BS). The universal frequency reuse mode is adopted to reveal actual spectrum reuse. By leveraging stochastic geometry and queueing theory, the interference interactions of the proposed network are accurately modelled. Accurate expressions for the mean packet throughputs of the network under universal frequency reuse mode are derived. The simulation results explore the optical bias factors in heterogeneous networks to maximize the mean packet throughput. Under a given user density, by changing BS densities, we achieved a certain mean packet throughput level.

Clustered techniques have since been employed to optimize energy consumption in this energy constrained wireless sensor networks. In Classical clustering protocols, equal energy is assigned to all nodes andthey cannot take full benefit of the presence of node heterogeneity. Streszczenie:
The Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs) are seemed to be heterogeneous networks based on the integration of several wireless technologies. These networks are required to achieve performances equivalent to classic wireless networks by ensuring the continuity of communications and the homogeneity of network management during horizontal and vertical handovers. This task is even more important when management services, like security and quality of service (QoS), are deployed at access technology level. In this paper, we propose a framework for heterogeneous wireless technology integration based on network architecture skeleton and a handover management mechanism. This framework optimizes the layer-2 handover procedure to achieve performances required by sensitive applications while ensuring the minimization of signaling overhead required for operated networks. As an application example, we make use of this framework to propose a heterogeneous network based on WiFi and WiMAX technologies. We present an application example of the framework using the specification of a WiFi-WiMAX network. We propose several performance evaluations based on simulation tests based on this application. The latter confirm the efficiency of handover delay optimization and the minimization of management signaling costs.

In direct position determination (DPD), a large number of observation data need to be integrated and transmitted, which creates higher requirements for the transmission performance of the network. To alleviate the problem of performance degradation in a large number of data transmissions, this paper proposes a heterogeneous network architecture and transmission control algorithm for cross-regional heterogeneous networks. Through the heterogeneous integration of satellite and multihop networks, a transmission control model suitable for the long delay and high bit error rate environments is established, the congestion window of each stage of network transmission is analyzed, and the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm are verified by experiments. The results show that a large amount of data can be transmitted in a heterogeneous network. When dealing with direct location, the algorithm can effectively transmit a large number of observation data for cross-regional heterogeneous networks. This simple and applicable transmission control algorithm can improve the satellite link throughput and reduce the download response time compared with the traditional transmission algorithm. These studies provide a reference for a large number of data transmissions in direct position determination.

Many complex systems derived from nature and society consist of multiple types of entities and heterogeneous interactions, which can be effectively modeled as heterogeneous information network (HIN). Structural analysis of heterogeneous networks is of great significance by leveraging the rich semantic information of objects and links in the heterogeneous networks. And, clustering heterogeneous networks aims to group vertices into classes, which sheds light on revealing the structure–function relations of the underlying systems. The current algorithms independently perform the feature extraction and clustering, which are criticized for not fully characterizing the structure of clusters. In this study, we propose a learning model by joint <underline>G</underline>raph <underline>E</underline>mbedding and <underline>N</underline>onnegative <underline>M</underline>atrix <underline>F</underline>actorization (aka GEjNMF ), where feature extraction and clustering are simultaneously learned by exploiting the graph embedding and latent structure of networks. We formulate the objective function of GEjNMF and transform the heterogeneous network clustering problem into a constrained optimization problem, which is effectively solved by l 0 -norm optimization. The advantage of GEjNMF is that features are selected under the guidance of clustering, which improves the performance and saves the running time of algorithms at the same time. The experimental results on three benchmark heterogeneous networks demonstrate that GEjNMF achieves the best performance with the least running time compared with the best state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is robust across heterogeneous networks from various fields. The proposed model and method provide an effective alternative for heterogeneous network clustering.

Abstract The rapid growth of small cells is driving cellular network toward randomness and heterogeneity. The multi-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet) addresses the massive connectivity demands of the emerging cellular networks. Cellular networks are usually modeled by placing each tier (e.g macro, pico and relay nodes) deterministically on a grid which ignores the spatial randomness of the nodes. Several works were idealized for not capturing the interference which is a major performance bottleneck. Overcoming such limitation by realistic models is much appreciated. Multi-tier relay cellular network is studied in this paper, In particular, we consider $${\mathscr {K}}$$ K -tier transmission modeled by factorial moment and stochastic geometry and compare it with a single-tier, traditional grid model and multi-antenna ultra-dense network (UDN) model to obtain tractable rate coverage and coverage probability. The locations of the relays, base stations, and users nodes are modeled as a Poisson Point Process. The results showed that the proposed model outperforms the traditional multi-antenna UDN model and its accuracy is confirmed to be similar to the traditional grid model. The obtained results from the proposed and comparable models demonstrate the effectiveness and analytical tractability to study the HetNet performance.

Federated Learning is a widely adopted method for training neural networks over distributed data. One main limitation is the performance degradation that occurs when data are heterogeneously distributed. While many studies have attempted to address this problem, a more recent understanding of neural networks provides insight to an alternative approach. In this study, we show that only certain important layers in a neural network require regularization for effective training. We additionally verify that Centered Kernel Alignment (CKA) most accurately calculates similarities between layers of neural networks trained on different data. By applying CKA-based regularization to important layers during training, we significantly improved performances in heterogeneous settings. We present FedCKA, a simple framework that outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods on various deep learning tasks while also improving efficiency and scalability.

As few real systems comprise indistinguishable units, diversity is a hallmark of nature. Diversity among interacting units shapes properties of collective behavior such as synchronization and information transmission. However, the benefits of diversity on information processing at the edge of a phase transition, ordinarily assumed to emerge from identical elements, remain largely unexplored. Analyzing a general model of excitable systems with heterogeneous excitability, we find that diversity can greatly enhance optimal performance (by two orders of magnitude) when distinguishing incoming inputs. Heterogeneous systems possess a subset of specialized elements whose capability greatly exceeds that of the nonspecialized elements. We also find that diversity can yield multiple percolation, with performance optimized at tricriticality. Our results are robust in specific and more realistic neuronal systems comprising a combination of excitatory and inhibitory units, and indicate that diversity-induced amplification can be harnessed by neuronal systems for evaluating stimulus intensities.

In heterogeneous wireless networks, service providers typically employ multiple radio access technologies to satisfy the requirements of quality of service (QoS) and improve the system performance. However, many challenges remain when using modern cellular mobile communications radio access technologies (e.g., wireless local area network, long-term evolution, and fifth generation), such as inefficient allocation and management of wireless network resources in heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs). This problem is caused by the sharing of available resources by several users, random distribution of wireless channels, scarcity of wireless spectral resources, and dynamic behavior of generated traffic. Previously, resource allocation schemes have been proposed for HWNs. However, these schemes focus on resource allocation and management, whereas traffic class is not considered. Hence, these existing schemes significantly increase the end-to-end delay and packet loss, resulting in poor user QoS and network throughput in HWNs. Therefore, this study attempts to solve the identified problem by designing an enhanced resource allocation (ERA) algorithm to address the inefficient allocation of available resources vs. QoS challenges. Computer simulation was performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed ERA algorithm by comparing it with a joint power bandwidth allocation algorithm and a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm. On average, the proposed ERA algorithm demonstrates a 98.2% bandwidth allocation, 0.75 s end-to-end delay, 1.1% packet loss, and 98.9% improved throughput performance at a time interval of 100 s.

We present Geometric Broadcast for Heterogeneous Sensor Networks (GBS), a novel broadcasting protocol for heterogeneous wireless sensor and actor networks. While broadcasting is a very energy expensive protocol, it is also widely used as a building block for a variety of other network layer protocols. Therefore, reducing the energy consumption by optimizing broadcasting is a major improvement in heterogenous sensor networking. GBS is a distributed algorithm where nodes make local decisions on whether to transmit based on a geometric approach. GBS does not need any neighborhood information and imposes very low communication overhead. GBS is scalable to the change in network size, node type, node density and topology. Furthermore it accommodates seamlessly such network changes, including the presence of actors in heterogeneous sensor networks. Indeed, GBS takes advantage of actor nodes, and uses their resources when possible, thus reducing the energy consumption by sensor nodes. Through simulation evaluations, we show that GBS is very scalable and its performance is improved by the presence of actors. At the best of our knowledge, GBS is the first broadcast protocol designed specifically for heterogeneous sensor and actor networks.

The first level is the network’s application heterogeneity, and the second level is the heterogeneity of the radio environment. The proposed scheme addresses scheduling and radio channel allocation issues. Allocation-decision making is centralized, whereas spectrum sensing is distributed, thereby increasing efficiency and limiting interference. Despite the limited capabilities of the sensor’s networks, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme also includes increasing the opportunity to utilize a wider range of the radio spectrum. improved Pliable Cognitive Medium Access protocol is quite appropriate for critical communications that gain attention in the next 5G of wireless networks. Simulation results and the comparison of the proposed protocol with other protocols indicate the robust performance of the proposed scheme. The results reveal the significant effectiveness, with only a slight trade-off in terms of complexity.

Streszczenie:
The quality of inter-network communication is often detrimentally affected by the large deployment of heterogeneous networks, including Long Fat Networks, as a result of wireless media introduction. Legacy transport protocols assume an independent wired connection to the network. When a loss occurs, the protocol considers it as a congestion loss, decreasing its throughput in order to reduce the network congestion without evaluating a possible channel failure. Distinct wireless transport protocols and their reference metrics are analyzed in order to design a mechanism that improves the Aggressive and Adaptative Transport Protocol (AATP) performance over Heterogeneous Long Fat Networks (HLFNs). In this paper, we present the Enhanced-AATP, which introduces the designed Loss Threshold Decision maker mechanism for the detection of different types of losses in the AATP operation. The degree to which the protocol can maintain throughput levels during channel losses or decrease production while congestion losses occur depends on the evolution of the smooth Jitter Ratio metric value. Moreover, the defined Weighted Fairness index enables the modification of protocol behavior and hence the prioritized fair use of the node’s resources. Different experiments are simulated over a network simulator to demonstrate the operation and performance improvement of the Enhanced-AATP. To conclude, the Enhanced-AATP performance is compared with other modern protocols.

Streszczenie:
Coded multicasting has been shown to be a promising approach to significantly improve the performance of content delivery networks with multiple caches downstream of a common multicast link. However, the schemes that have been shown to achieve order-optimal performance require content items to be partitioned into several packets that grows exponentially with the number of caches, leading to codes of exponential complexity that jeopardize their promising performance benefits. In this paper, we address this crucial performance-complexity tradeoff in a heterogeneous caching network setting, where edge caches with possibly different storage capacity collect multiple content requests that may follow distinct demand distributions. We extend the asymptotic (in the number of packets per file) analysis of shared link caching networks to heterogeneous network settings, and present novel coded multicast schemes, based on local graph coloring, that exhibit polynomial-time complexity in all the system parameters, while preserving the asymptotically proven multiplicative caching gain even for finite file packetization. We further demonstrate that the packetization order (the number of packets each file is split into) can be traded-off with the number of requests collected by each cache, while preserving the same multiplicative caching gain. Simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed schemes and illustrate the interesting request aggregation vs. packetization order tradeoff within several practical settings. Our results provide a compelling step towards the practical achievability of the promising multiplicative caching gain in next generation access networks.

Next generation wireless networks will provide seamless high bandwidth connectivity with high quality of service (QoS) support to mobile users, where a mobile will be able to connect to several wireless access networks simultaneously. In this environment, heterogeneity of networks and heterogeneity of applications are presented as challenging problems, where an efficient architecture is needed to integrate different technologies. In addition, deciding the serving network is essential to avoid resource wastage and provide QoS for users. In this paper, we propose new integration architecture based on a virtual operator that rents or invests resources from a physical operator, and sells services to customers. The virtual operator will monitor the network’s conditions and QoS parameters, and then provide the user requesting access with useful information to decide the serving network. In this context, we modify four well-known decision mechanisms (load balance, minimum distance, minimum price and minimum delay) by adding the QoS as a hard constraint. We also propose a new decision mechanism, where we consider new decision criteria that improves the overall system performance. Simulation results show that the new proposed mechanism outperforms the modified mechanisms, where the blocking probability is clearly reduced and a good level of QoS is provided to real-time applications or high-priority users.

Streszczenie:
Due to a multistage nature of transmission processes in heterogeneous 4G, 5G mobile networks, multiphase queuing systems become one of the most suitable ways for the resource allocation algorithms analysis and network investigation. In this paper, a few scientific papers that approached heterogeneous networks modelling by means of multiphase queuing systems are reviewed, mentioning the difficulties that arise with this type of analytical analysis. Moreover, several previously investigated models are introduced briefly as an example of two-phase systems of finite capacity and a special structure in discrete time that can be used for analysing resource allocation schemes based on the main performance measures obtained for wireless heterogeneous networks. One of the model presents a two-phase tandem queue with a group arrival flow of requests and a second phase of the complex structure that consists of parallel finite queues. The second model is a two-phase tandem queue with Markov modulated geometric arrival and service processes at the first phase and exhaustive service process at the second phase, which solves a cross-layer adaption problem in a heterogeneous network.

Streszczenie:
The failure rate of sensor nodes in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks is high due to the use of low battery-powered sensor nodes in a hostile environment. Networks of this kind become non-operational and turn into disjoint segmented networks due to large-scale failures of sensor nodes. This may require the placement of additional highpower relay nodes. In this paper, we propose a network partition recovery solution called Grey Wolf, which is an optimizer algorithm for repairing segmented heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. The proposed solution provides not only strong bi-connectivity in the damaged area, but also distributes traffic load among the multiple deployed nodes to enhance the repaired network’s lifetime. The experiment results show that the Grey Wolf algorithm offers a considerable performance advantage over other state-of-the-art approaches.

Streszczenie:
Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) is a transport layer protocol, which transmits TCP segments on more than one path, in multihomed devices. It was designed with the aim of Bandwidth aggregation and redundant connections. Currently, multihomed devices have wireless interfaces of heterogeneous nature. MPTCP is not able to give its optimal performance in heterogeneous networks. This paper presents an experimental performance study of four different schedulers, namely Roundrobin, Default, Blest, and Redundant. Our testbed comprises Ethernet, LTE, and Wifi networks to connect multihomed devices. We have compared the scheduler performance in terms of Throughput , Download time and path utilization rate in homogenous and heterogenous scenarios . Results showed that Round robin provides optimal throughput in homogenous networks and also performs bandwidth aggregation by utilizing both the paths but fails to perform in heterogenous networks. Blest, provides best throughput among the four schedulers but prefers fast path only.

Streszczenie:
The future wireless networks are heterogeneous in nature where different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) coexist in the same coverage area. The user terminal has to select the best access technology among Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN), and Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) etc. at its current location. Thus, selecting the appropriate RAT and cell becomes a complex problem in heterogeneous network due to number of variables involved in the selection process. The main objective of this work in the heterogeneous networks is to maximize the percentage of satisfied users who are assigned to the networks. Henceforth, this paper presents an innovative mechanism for the selection of heterogeneous networks such as WWAN and WLAN. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using 1000 datasets. From the simulation results, it is found that the proposed algorithm gives highest probability for mobile user satisfaction than the existing methods.
