Through an ethnographic exploration of Pehuenche conceptualizations of doubles and of greeting and funerary practices in Southern Chile, this article considers the ontological relevance of sensorial perception as a main operator for stabilizing the tension between autonomy and dependence on otherness. The article aims to establish how relations between ‘real people’ or che, in Pehuenche daily life, do not precede mutual sensorial perception; instead, they can be seen as the result of such perceptions. In so doing, and building upon the concept of ‘potential affinity’ as a persisting relational principle of relatedness, I show how the minimal unit of analysis of sensorial perception is not composed of separated unities. Rather, it is an assemblage of multiple capacities involving both visible and invisible relational entities.

Introduction: The increasing number of older people around the world has increased the demand for elderly care nursing services. Understanding nursing perceptions can identify willingness to work with older people. Objective: This study aims to determine predictors for nursing students’ perception of working with older people. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 292 nursing students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Stratified random sampling with an online self-reporting questionnaire was used to collect data from first- to fourth-year nursing students. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 20. Independent t-test, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation were utilised to determine the correlation of demographic variables, knowledge and attitude with perception. Moreover, multiple linear regression was applied to determine predictors for the perception of working with older people. Results: The mean score of perception of working with older people amongst undergraduate nursing students was 51.79±6.31. Factors related to perception include gender (p=0.004), geriatric nursing choice (p=0.007), knowledge about ageing (p=0.001) and attitude towards older people (p<0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender (β=−0.149, p=0.005), geriatric nursing choice (β=0.154, p=0.003), knowledge about ageing (β=0.122, p=0.021) and attitude towards older people (β=0.367, p<0.001) are predictors for the perception of working with older people. Conclusion: An in-depth understanding of ageing and attitude towards older people in the geriatric curriculum plays a vital role in promoting nursing students’ perception of working with older people.

Background: Patients do not respond to treatment in a predictable manner. Individual preconceptions determine help seeking, compliance and treatment outcome, yet clinicians rarely explore these issues. The illness perception approach sees the patient as an active participant in the healthcare process.Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the illness perceptions of people with dysphonia. The subsidiary aims were to correlate the Illness Perception Questionnaire with any psychological distress identified and a self-report measure of dysphonia, and to consider any potential implications for patient management.Design: Prospective, cross-sectional observation.Setting: Primary and secondary care, two general and four community hospitals.Participants: Fifty adult patients with dysphonia due to benign disease completed three self-administered questionnaires, which investigated their illness perceptions, psychological distress and perceptions of the impact of the presenting ‘illness’.Measures: The dysphonia was categorised as being due to functional (n=40) or organic (n=10) causes. All the voices were rated by an expert listener according to the GRBAS (grade, roughness, breathiness, aesthenia, strain) scale. Participants completed the Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Vocal Performance Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Results: Patients showed a wide variation in perception of causation. They had no strong perceptions about the causes, consequences or duration of the presenting dysphonia. Functional dysphonics reported greater consequences, lower perceived control and increased anxiety when compared to patients with organic dysphonia. In terms of cure/control, all patients expected treatment to be helpful but this expectancy reduced as time increased. Anxiety was more associated with functional dysphonia, however, only 17 per cent of the subjects in this group showed clinically significant levels of signs of psychological distress. Conclusions: Lay illness representations often diverge from the clinician's understanding of the presenting problem and strongly influence treatment behaviour. Early exploration of illness perceptions may enhance health behaviour and maximise the impact of intervention.

Background: Autopsy is a comprehensive evaluation of the body and the circumstances surrounding an individual’s death. Currently, autopsy rates in various countries have been decreased in recent years. This decrease was due to the rejection by people who had inadequate knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about autopsies. This study aimed to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of Bandung residents about autopsies. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive observational study involved people in the Bandung City who were over the age of 20 during the period August to September 2020. The sample was obtained using a snowball system. Research subjects filled out a questionnaire through a Google form containing questions about knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions. The results were categorized based on the median for each variable. Results: Subjects with questionnaire data obtained were 378 people with an average age of 30.30±13.48 years, and most (66.9%) were female. A total of 259 people had adequate knowledge (68.5%), 254 people (67.2%) had a positive attitude, and 249 people (65.9%) had a positive perception, with a median value of 7, 6, and 12, respectively. However, 95 people did not agree to do an autopsy on their relatives or family to determine the cause of death. Conclusion: The subject as a whole showed adequate knowledge, positive attitude, and perception. However, there are still some people who show inadequate knowledge and poor attitudes and perceptions about autopsies. It is recommended that the government and other institutions intervene in the community to increase knowledge and attitudes and improve public perception.

Perception towards nuclear energy is a vital factor determining the success or failure of nuclear projects. An online survey obtained attitudes toward nuclear energy, opinions on whether benefits of nuclear energy outweigh the risks, and views of using nuclear energy as an energy source. A total of 4318 participants from across the U.S. completed the survey. Logistic regression was used to predict perceptions of nuclear energy by participant demographics and geographical location. Participants living closest to Idaho National Laboratory (INL) were more likely to have positive attitudes towards nuclear energy (aOR: 7.18, p < 0.001), believe the benefits were greater than the risks (aOR: 4.90, p < 0.001), and have positive attitudes toward using nuclear energy as an electricity source (aOR: 5.70, p < 0.001), compared to people living farther from INL. Males and non-Hispanic white participants were more likely to have positive perceptions of nuclear energy. Developing and implementing awareness raising campaigns for people living further away from nuclear power plants, targeting females and Hispanic whites, may be key to improving the overall perceptions of nuclear energy.

This research is entitled "Public Perceptions of Providing Direct Cash Assistance during the Covid-19 Pandemic" (Study in Air Asuk Village, Central Siantan District, Anambas Islands Regency). Which aims to find out people's perceptions of giving or distributing direct cash assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic (a study in Air Asuk Village, Siantan Tengah District, Anambas Islands Regency). The theoretical framework in this study is: 1. Perception, 2. Social Assistance, 3. Covid-19. The operational concept used according to Notoatmojo (2005) says there are several factors that influence perception, namely: 1. Feelings, 2. Experience, 3. Ability to think. This research is a research using qualitative methods. That is done with an observation and in-depth interviews with the people of the village of Air Asuk as the informant of this research. The informants and samples included the community as recipients of aid funds, and also people who did not receive these funds. Then the location of this research is in the village of Air Asuk, Anambas Islands Regency. The results of the research are that people who tend to have negative perceptions are people who do not get help, that perception is based on internal and external perception factors, both what is felt, what is experienced while experiencing difficulties in the midst of an epidemic/pandemic, some are based on external factors, namely in the form of a stimulus when they know that the community is capable of getting help, and those who are affected have a negative perception because they have been influenced by other people around them who think that this is not right on target. Furthermore, there are also quite a lot of people who have a positive perception of the distribution of Covid-19 BLT-DD assistance, most of them have a positive perception, namely from the people who receive assistance, while the basis for their evaluation is that the distribution of aid funds is very useful and has been right on target, which tends to be based on internal factors. , as well as feelings of pleasure and help, and based on what is experienced. Just as they felt that the assistance was right on target to them because they really felt affected and had economic difficulties, so that when the informants received assistance, they were able to make them have a positive perception.

AbstractObjectiveSocial perception is a key aspect of social cognition which has so far not been investigated in eating disorders (ED). This study aimed to investigate social perception in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN).MethodsOutpatients with AN (restricting subtype [AN-R]: n = 51; binge-purge subtype [AN-BP]: n = 26) or BN (n = 57) and 50 healthy control (HC) participants completed the Interpersonal Perception Task (IPT-15). This is an ecologically valid task, which consists of 15 video clips, depicting complex social situations relating to intimacy, status, kinship, competition and deception. The participants have to assess relationships between protagonists’ based on non-verbal cues.ResultsOverall, there was no difference between groups on the IPT total score and subscale scores. Group differences on the Intimacy subscale approached significance so post hoc comparisons were carried out. HCs performed significantly better than AN-R participants in determining the degree of intimacy between others.ConclusionsSocial perception is largely preserved in ED patients. Individuals with AN-R show impairments in identifying intimacy in social situations, this may be due to the lack of relationship experience. Further research into different aspects of social cognition is required to establish the link between interpersonal difficulties and ED psychopathology.

This paper is concerned with the identification of different influences on the built environment, and those which have a physical and psychological impact on people. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of the built environment on the lives of people. The interrelationship between people and built environment is based on human perception. This research will explore this relationship further in order to develop a clear understanding of the ways in which architecture may influence peoples’ perceptions and experiences. Additionally, the research entails a comparison between two important theories: the first is an Image of the city derived using the Mental Map Theory; the second is related to Space Syntax Theory. The two theories will be applied in two different cities in Libya with the aim of assessing the importance of their interrelationship and how it may be understood more clearly. This paper will also provide guidelines for improving urban design and planning standards with the end goal of producing a high quality perception by those who actually use the space. Moreover, it concludes with a number of research avenues that should be pursued to answer how the properties of built environment affect human perception.

This article is directed to examine how did Indonesian people perceived Joko Widodo’s personal competence and leadership resiliency during the covid-19 pandemic era and the degree to which did political preference of these people on political party carry out effects on such perceptions. Focusing on these issues, this article adopts concepts of presidential leadership, personal competence, resilient leadership and political preference, collects the survei data derived from 1200 respondents using a multistage random sampling and extracts the survei data using descriptive and cross tabulation statistical analyses. The finding indicates that the Indonesian people’ perception of Joko Widodo’s personal competence and leadership resiliency to handle covid-19 pandemic-related problems varied. Most of them perceived that President Joko Widodo had personal competence and leadership resiliency to manage covid-19 pandemic. Polical preference of these people on political party are likely to determine these perceptions however. These evidences confirms that not merely a perception bias among these people regarding Joko Widodo’s personal competence and leadership resiliency to manage covid-19 pandemic-related problems keep evolving, but also political preference of these people on political party have been taking place as a determinant factor. This hints that a perception bias remained taking shape as influential factor that determines the development of Indonesian (electoral) politics.

Appropriate perceptions of own disease by chronically ill person significantly affects the success of the diagnostic and therapeutic process. It depends on the existential situation of the patient, the adopted strategy of coping with the disease, received social support, as well as on the way the patient is treated by medical personnel. The aim of the conducted research was to assess the relationship between the perception of the disease by chronically ill people and their trust in medical staff. The study involved 511 people receiving treatment for chronic diseases. The diagnostic survey method was used in the study, the research tools were: the Imagination and Perception of Illness Scale (IPIS), the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief IPQ), the Trust in Physician scale by L.A. Anderson and R.F. Dedrick, and a self-authorship questionnaire. Among the studied population, statistically significant relationships were observed between the perception of own disease by the patient, measured with the IPIS scale, and the trust in medical personnel calculated with the Trust in Physician. In the study group, there are statistically significant differences between the belief of the respondents in the effectiveness of treating their own disease and the overall result of trust in medical personnel. The perception of own disease by chronically ill people affects the level of trust in medical staff. The way the patients will perceive their illness depends, among other things, on the relationship between them and the doctor.

The French Cancer Barometer, a population-based-survey, is carried out every five years and is, to date, one of the few national studies conducted to investigate individual perception linked to cancer risk factors. The aims of the present study were to describe the perceptions of the French population in 2015 and to assess their evolution over a 5-year period (2010–2015). The French Cancer Barometer surveyed a randomly selected sample of participants aged 15–75 years (n = 3345 in 2010) and 15–85 years (n = 3764 in 2015), representative of the French population. Questions were on perception of diet, physical activity, obesity, and breastfeeding as cancer risk factors. In 2015, nutritional/activity factors were perceived as having an important role in cancer development for the majority of those surveyed (diet (90.8%), obesity (76%), and physical activity (70%)) with the exception being breastfeeding (34%). However, there was a moderate perception of the risks of red meat (43%) and salt or salty food (55%) consumption. Perceptions of nutritional risk factors were mostly associated with age and education level. Interestingly, there was a greater perception of nutritional risk factors in 2015 compared to 2010, and the participants’ opinions were also stronger. Efforts should be made on individuals with lower educational level and to promote the beneficial effects of breastfeeding. However, to impact food behavior, measures are needed at the environmental level and not only at the individual one.

Perception of one's body is related not only to the physical appearance of the body, but also to the neural representation of the body. The brain contains many body maps that systematically differ between right- and left-handed people. In general, the cortical representations of the right arm and right hand tend to be of greater area in the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere for right-handed people, whereas these cortical representations tend to be symmetrical across hemispheres for left-handers. We took advantage of these naturally occurring differences and examined perceived arm length in right- and left-handed people. When looking at each arm and hand individually, right-handed participants perceived their right arms and right hands to be longer than their left arms and left hands, whereas left-handed participants perceived both arms accurately. These experiments reveal a possible relationship between implicit body maps in the brain and conscious perception of the body.

Governmental performance is important for maintaining the public’s political trust. This article examines the moderating role of the popular perceptions of democracy on the effect of governmental performance on political trust in authoritarian regimes by studying the case of China. The popular perceptions of democracy affect the evaluations of governmental performance, and the effects of governmental performance on political trust are contingent on particular democratic perception. The results reveal that a better government’s social performance particularly increases political trust among people who view elections as an essential component of democracy. However, such a positive effect is significantly reduced among people who consider political rights to be a key component of democracy. Regardless of how Chinese people view democracy, government’s poor political performance reduces people’s political trust in the government. However, the negative effect is most significant among people who prioritize political rights in their perception of democracy. For those who view economic security as an essential component of democracy, the negative effect of the government’s poor political performance on political trust is substantially attenuated.

Although previous researchers have demonstrated that people often prefer potential rather than achievement when evaluating other people or products, few have focused on the boundary conditions on this effect. We proposed that the preference for potential would emerge when individuals’ perception of economic mobility was high, but the preference for achievement would emerge among individuals with low perceptions of economic mobility. Our results showed that people paid more attention to the future (vs. the present) when their perception of economic mobility was high; this, in turn, promoted more favorable reactions toward potential (vs. achievement). Thus, we suggested circumstances under which highlighting a person’s potential for future success is effective and those when it is not effective. Moreover, we revealed the important role of individual perceptions regarding economic mobility in driving this effect.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between sociodemographic, health and disabilityrelated factors and the perception of environmental barriers outside the home environment by individuals with permanent disabilities in Mexico. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, population-based study, we used data from the 2010 National Survey of Perceptions of Disability in the Mexican Population of 2,041 participants older than 18 with permanent disability. The perceptions of barriers take into consideration the challenges of getting around and using transportation outside the home environment. The covariates consisted of sociodemographic, health-related and disability-related factors. Multivariate logistic regression was used. RESULTS: The perception of environmental barriers outside the home environment was associated with being a woman, living in an urban area, speaking an indigenous language, experiencing emotional symptoms, having walking/movement, visual or self-care disabilities, having severe/extreme disability, having disability caused by illness, using physical devices, and receiving assistance and care in the home environment. CONCLUSIONS: This information is valuable for the design of public policies and programs that promote the participation of individuals with permanent disabilities, a high-priority issue in low- and middle-income countries.

Initial perceptions of people are the basis of how we view one another and most likely determine how relationships will turn out. In recent years, the idea of implicit biases, subconsciously being unfair to a particular group of people, has been widely scrutinized. Whether it is related to being employed at a company or just simply interacting with a stranger, implicit biases exist through and through. Because of this, we have to ask ourselves how much skin tone affects our perceptions of specific individuals daily, especially how we judge their personalities differently. This research will be based on how people's skin tone affects their initial perceptions/snap judgments regarding their personalities. To address this question, this experiment will consist of 150 participants looking through 160 images of men and women, sorted into four main categories: very dark, dark, light, and very light skin tones. Each of these images will be shown for 100 ms, and then the participants will be asked questions regarding the images personalities based on the Big 5 Personality Test. These responses will then be measured as being a negative or a positive perception response. It is expected that the stimulus images that represent individuals of darker skin tones will receive more negative perception responses. In contrast, the stimulus images representing individuals of lighter skin tones will receive more positive perception responses. These results imply that implicit biases not only exist but exist at a deeper, subconscious level.

This study analyzes the change in people's perceptions of work and leisure during the COVID-19 pandemic and the factors affecting it using data from public perception surveys conducted in 2021 and 2014. As analytical results, first, the orientation to balance work and leisure was increased in 2021 compared to 2014, resulting in a change in the public's perception of work and leisure. Second, in 2021, a higher education level and higher age indicated a higher orientation toward work-leisure balance. In addition, in terms of political ideology, progressives or conservatives were both more likely to pursue a balance between work and leisure than moderates. Third, in 2014, there was no difference in the work-leisure balance orientation according to the cohort, whereas in 2021— unlike the age effect— the low-age cohort showed a higher work-leisure balance orientation than the high-age cohort. This emphasizes the need for restructuring the system in accordance with the constraints of the environment during COVID-19 and the change in perception of the balance between work and leisure.

In some cases, people mistakenly avoid ecosystems that protect people from disasters. In conclusion, this concept and its findings facilitate an understanding of people’s perceptions of disaster prevention mitigation functions of ecosystems and promote the concrete practice of conserving ecosystems.

AbstractThe main aim of this study was to test whether perception of partner infidelity prompts people to adopt behaviour that is meant to compensate for the increased risk of infection posed by their partner’s infidelity; or whether it prompts people to engage in behaviour that magnifies the risk associated with partner infidelity. Data used were derived from the fourth and latest Botswana AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS IV) conducted in 2013. The sample consisted of 6985 people aged 10–34 years. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with perception of partner infidelity and sexual risk behaviours. Perception of partner infidelity with the current and most recent partner was 39.6% while perception of partner infidelity with other previous sexual partners was 79.9%. The main socio-demographic factors associated with perception of partner infidelity were being a man, being single and having secondary education, while sexual risk behaviours associated with perception of partner infidelity were having multiple sexual partners and being involved in multiple concurrent sexual partnerships. These relationships were statistically significant at the 5% level. Botswana’s HIV prevention strategies should seek to improve partner communication within relationships in order to enhance people’s confidence and skills so as to minimize perceptions of infidelity.

We examine the role party identification plays in moderating people's perception of place. Do people rely on heuristics to gauge neighborhood partisan composition? If so, those estimates may influence their perception of fit and neighborhood satisfaction. We find that in the absence of concrete, detailed information, people make quick judgments. Republicans, compared to Democrats and non–partisans, are more likely to develop impressions based on the specific location characteristics presented here. When perceived to be a political minority in an area, people are less likely to feel that they belong. In addition to conventional economic and life–cycle factors, political perceptions also affect judgments about the suitability of prospective neighborhoods.
