Through an ethnographic exploration of Pehuenche conceptualizations of doubles and of greeting and funerary practices in Southern Chile, this article considers the ontological relevance of sensorial perception as a main operator for stabilizing the tension between autonomy and dependence on otherness. The article aims to establish how relations between ‘real people’ or che, in Pehuenche daily life, do not precede mutual sensorial perception; instead, they can be seen as the result of such perceptions. In so doing, and building upon the concept of ‘potential affinity’ as a persisting relational principle of relatedness, I show how the minimal unit of analysis of sensorial perception is not composed of separated unities. Rather, it is an assemblage of multiple capacities involving both visible and invisible relational entities.

Streszczenie:
Introduction: The increasing number of older people around the world has increased the demand for elderly care nursing services. Understanding nursing perceptions can identify willingness to work with older people. Objective: This study aims to determine predictors for nursing students’ perception of working with older people. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 292 nursing students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Stratified random sampling with an online self-reporting questionnaire was used to collect data from first- to fourth-year nursing students. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 20. Independent t-test, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation were utilised to determine the correlation of demographic variables, knowledge and attitude with perception. Moreover, multiple linear regression was applied to determine predictors for the perception of working with older people. Results: The mean score of perception of working with older people amongst undergraduate nursing students was 51.79±6.31. Factors related to perception include gender (p=0.004), geriatric nursing choice (p=0.007), knowledge about ageing (p=0.001) and attitude towards older people (p<0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender (β=−0.149, p=0.005), geriatric nursing choice (β=0.154, p=0.003), knowledge about ageing (β=0.122, p=0.021) and attitude towards older people (β=0.367, p<0.001) are predictors for the perception of working with older people. Conclusion: An in-depth understanding of ageing and attitude towards older people in the geriatric curriculum plays a vital role in promoting nursing students’ perception of working with older people.

Streszczenie:
Background: Patients do not respond to treatment in a predictable manner. Individual preconceptions determine help seeking, compliance and treatment outcome, yet clinicians rarely explore these issues. The illness perception approach sees the patient as an active participant in the healthcare process.Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the illness perceptions of people with dysphonia. The subsidiary aims were to correlate the Illness Perception Questionnaire with any psychological distress identified and a self-report measure of dysphonia, and to consider any potential implications for patient management.Design: Prospective, cross-sectional observation.Setting: Primary and secondary care, two general and four community hospitals.Participants: Fifty adult patients with dysphonia due to benign disease completed three self-administered questionnaires, which investigated their illness perceptions, psychological distress and perceptions of the impact of the presenting ‘illness’.Measures: The dysphonia was categorised as being due to functional (n=40) or organic (n=10) causes. All the voices were rated by an expert listener according to the GRBAS (grade, roughness, breathiness, aesthenia, strain) scale. Participants completed the Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Vocal Performance Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Results: Patients showed a wide variation in perception of causation. They had no strong perceptions about the causes, consequences or duration of the presenting dysphonia. Functional dysphonics reported greater consequences, lower perceived control and increased anxiety when compared to patients with organic dysphonia. In terms of cure/control, all patients expected treatment to be helpful but this expectancy reduced as time increased. Anxiety was more associated with functional dysphonia, however, only 17 per cent of the subjects in this group showed clinically significant levels of signs of psychological distress. Conclusions: Lay illness representations often diverge from the clinician's understanding of the presenting problem and strongly influence treatment behaviour. Early exploration of illness perceptions may enhance health behaviour and maximise the impact of intervention.

Background: Scant attention has been paid to how risk perceptions of public health crises may affect people’s mental health. Aims: The aims of this study are to (1) construct a conceptual framework for risk perception and depression of people in public health crises, (2) examine how the mental health of people in the crisis of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is affected by risk perception and its associated factors, including distance perception of the crisis and support of prevention and control policies, and (3) propose policy recommendations on how to deal with psychological problems in the current COVID-19 crisis. Methods: Online questionnaire survey was implemented. A total of 6373 people visited the questionnaire online, 1115 people completed the questionnaire, and the number of valid questionnaires was 1081. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis. Results: Risk perception and its associated factors significantly affect the mental health of people in public health crises. Specifically, (1) distance perception of public health crises is negatively associated with depression among people, (2) affective risk perception is positively associated with depression of people in public health crises, (3) cognitive risk perception is negatively associated with depression of people in public health crises, and (4) support of prevention and control policies is negatively associated with depression of people in public health crises. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that risk perception plays an important role in affecting the mental health of people in a public health crisis. Therefore, health policies aiming to improve the psychological wellbeing of the people in a public health crisis should take risk perception into consideration.

Streszczenie:
This research addresses policy inaction, a topic given scant attention in policymaking literature. The specific aim is to understand why policymakers in the state of NSW (Australia) do nothing about people who experience anomalous visual perception (AVP). Atypical perceptual distortions impact on most life skills, including reading, driving, and playing sport, thus these private subjective experiences pose problems in multiple public policy domains. In the education sector, as parent and teacher, I perceived costs of inaction namely, limited educational opportunity, hence my quest to find out why policy inaction prevails. Theoretical frameworks (Agenda Setting; Multiple Streams; Advocacy Coalition; Path Dependency and the Role of Experts) are used to comprehend policy inaction. A phenomenologically oriented methodology draws on counterfactuals: plausible and possible actions are used to spotlight policy inaction. Counterfactuals are verified by an empirical account of policymaking for students with anomalous visual perception at one NSW high school. Interactions between the Board of Studies, bureaucrats, members of Parliament, parents, and staff are recounted; students’ voices are included, and improved academic results are documented. Yet policy inaction prevails because policymakers are inhibited by the federal contract; by traditions which limit policy options and by a narrow problem frame which confines the problem to the education system. No entrepreneur has attempted to link the problem (illumination-induced perceptual distortions) with the politics (of multi-national lighting standards) and with a solution (adjustable lighting). Epistemic conflict fosters inaction. An ‘epistocracy’ claims the problem is non-existent, vision scientists demur, and philosophers argue against reductionist science. My research demonstrates inaction; contributes to understanding why government does nothing for light sensitive people and it provides a warrant for action.

Streszczenie:
This study uses two quantitative and two qualitative data sources to determine if homeless people are viewed as dangerous and if they are what factors contribute to this perception. Areas examined are respondent's characteristics, media affects and the perceived rights of homeless people to urban space. Actual levels of perpetration among the homeless are examined to allow for comparisons between perception and reality to be made. Findings showed that race plays a major role in the perception of homeless peo-ple among whites, while gender is more influential among blacks. There was no rela-tionship between media and perceptions. A negative relationship was found between support of rights of the homeless and the perception that they are dangerous. While the homeless have higher incarceration rate as compared to the poor-but-never-homeless, the crimes for which they are sentenced appear to be non-violent in nature and are of-ten what are characterized as nuisance crimes. Recommendations were made to study actual perpetration rates among the homeless to allow for a more in-depth analysis of criminal involvement.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is a study of the Sämi community in the village of Inari in northeastern Finland. Through the study I address the following issue: is there any fundamental difference in the way Sämi people relate to the environment compared to neighbouring communities, and to people of socalled "Western" societies? Following recent studies of indigenous peoples of the circumpolar North, my analytical approach hinges upon the principle that the landscape is important in fashioning people's sense of identity and as a repository of their traditions. The natural world is not understood as standing apart from the domain of human social life, but rather as continuous with it. For this reason, no absolute distinction can be drawn between relations with human beings and relations with non-human components of the environment. Hence the question is: what is the relationship between the Sämi people and the environment they inhabit? I argue that this relationship is indeed very intimate, despite numerous technological changes that have affected the ways in which people talk about, engage with and move in it. I also argue that there are subtle differences between their approach and that, for example, of the Finnish community, whose cultural background lies in farming. 6Overall, this study demonstrates that although a number of ecological, cultural and social variables substantially affect the ways people relate to the environment, the connections between these variables are not based on simple cause and effect. Intentionalities shape the quality of these interactions in unpredictable ways. Hence perceptions, identities and traditions are dynamic and continually under construction. Conflicting views on these issues are also very prominent in Sämi life. Their importance lies in the ways they guide people's understandings of their actions in the landscape, both socially and environmentally. Finally, this study further suggests that any ontological division between humanity and nature should be abandoned if we are to pursue environmental policies that realistically address northern native peoples' practical engagement with the diverse constituents of their familiar environments. Such an approach affords the possibility not only of a much richer ethnographic appreciation of indigenous cultures, but also a powerful critique of our own 'Western' assumptions. It also raises the critical problem of understanding how the indigenous perspective responds to the ever-increasing involvement of native people with such 'Western' institutions as the nation state, the market and the Church

Jarvie, Stewart. "Self perception and psychosocial functioning in people with intractable epilepsy". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1993. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/825/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
It has long been recognised that many people with poorly controlled epilepsy suffer from significant inter-ictal psychosocial problems. Yet there is little consensus on appropriate treatment for such difficulties. It is argued that this has been due to an overconcentration on seizure control in treatment practice and a lack of professional agreement on potential aetiological factors or of consistent appropriate definitions of psychological and social difficulties. Recent research on patients' perceptions of their condition has indicated that such perceptions may be a more potent predictor of psychosocial functioning than objective information such as seizure type or frequency. If such perceptions were found to vary in a consistent and predictable manner, this would have considerable assessment and treatment implications. Analysis was made of the literature on patient perceptions. Four main conceptual areas were implicated: The perceived social effects of epilepsy, the perceived physical effects of epilepsy, perceived control over epilepsy and its effects, and knowledge of epilepsy. From this analysis a hypothetical `perception of epilepsy' model was developed: From this, it was suggested that patients' perceptions vary between `adaptive' perceptions, and `maladaptive' perceptions. It was proposed that `adaptive' perceptions were typified by good knowledge, high efficacy beliefs, high perceived control over seizures and health related behaviours, low fear of seizures and low perceived social limitations imposed by epilepsy. Conversely, `maladaptive' beliefs were typified by poor knowledge, low efficacy beliefs, external control beliefs, high perceived social limitations and high fear of seizures. It was hypothesised that if this model proved to be valid, the more maladaptive an individual's perception, the greater the psychosocial risk. A further supplementary hypothesis was made concerning `underadaptive' perceptions which, it was speculated, would result in passivity and dependency.

Streszczenie:
Color processing is a complex phenomenon, which involves distinct variables, not being a relatively simple human capacity, as was long thought. Neurosciences have been helping to achieve new discoveries, recontextualizing existing knowledge and raising new questions. The brain is the organ responsible for decoding electrical signals into experiences that make sense for humans to perceive the world. Color vision is closely associated with visual processing and human perception. Cones, visual receptors in the human eye specialized for color vision, transform electromagnetic waves into electrical stimuli, which in turn are conducted to the human cortex through the geniculostriate pathway. The visual cortex is divided into at least five areas, present in the occipital lobe and designated according to their structure and function (V1, V2, V3, V4, and V5), each of these areas playing a specific role when it comes to visual processing. In previous studies, we have shown that areas V1 and V2 are mainly responsible for initial visual processing. However, more recent investigations have led to the conclusion that color processing is largely associated with the V4 area, since this area becomes significantly more active when performing tasks in which color processing is necessary, in addition to lesions in this region causing achromatopsia, dysfunction linked to chromatic identification and perception. We have been developing a quasi-experience with humans, in order to help the understanding of brain reactions to different color dimensions, especially color processing and human perception and cognition, comparing the results obtained with those of other projects previously developed. The study has also focused on color constancy, that is, the human tendency to perceive a given object as having the same color regardless of changes in lighting, angle or distance. This paper presents the work developed so far with the participation of various groups of individuals, with different ages and genders, as well as the results obtained by the application of the chosen methodology. Although at first glance it seems like a relatively simple human ability, color processing is a very complex phenomenon, involving distinct variables, many of which are still a mystery to researchers. It is hoped that this investigation may add knowledge, especially at the level of color processing and human perception, with a view to its future use and application in projects focused on the use of color.

Following the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, after 20 years of occupation, the eyes of different sectors around the world have turned to that Asian country. Mexico's mass media are no exception. Day by day they report stories from different perspectives, through which Mexicans form an imaginary of that country. It is true that the media, in its different formats, directly influences the perception that people form about Afghanistan, but how close to reality are these stories?

Streszczenie:
Many wildlife management situations require the disposal of animal carcasses. These can include the lethal removal of wildlife to resolve damage or conflicts, as well as clean-up after mortalities caused by vehicle collisions, disease, oil spills or other natural disasters. Carcasses must be disposed of properly to protect public sensitivities, the environment, and public health. Improper disposal of carcasses can result in public outrage, site contamination, injury to animals and people, and the attraction of other animals that may lead to wildlife damage issues. Concern over ground water contamination and disease transmission from improper carcass disposal has resulted in increased regulation. Successful carcass disposal programs are cost-effective, environmentally sound, and protective of public health. In addition, disposal practices must demonstrate sensitivity to public perception while adhering to state and local guidelines. This publication discusses the range of options available for the responsible disposal of animal carcasses.

Streszczenie:
Telecommuting, the practice of working remotely at home, increased significantly (25% to 35%) early in the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift represented a major societal change that reshaped the family, work, and social lives of many Californians. These changes also raise important questions about what factors influenced telecommuting before, during, and after COVID-19, and to what extent changes in telecommuting have influenced transportation patterns across commute modes, employment, land use, and environment. The research team conducted state-level telecommuting surveys using a crowd-sourced platform (i.e., Amazon Mechanical Turk) to obtain valid samples across California (n=1,985) and conducted state-level interviews among stakeholders (n=28) across ten major industries in California. The study leveraged secondary datasets and developed regression and time-series models. Our surveys found that, compared to pre-pandemic levels, more people had a dedicated workspace at home and had received adequate training and support for telecommuting, became more flexible to choose their own schedules, and had improved their working performance—but felt isolated and found it difficult to separate home and work life. Our interviews suggested that telecommuting policies were not commonly designed and implemented until COVID-19. Additionally, regression analyses showed that telecommuting practices have been influenced by COVID-19 related policies, public risk perception, home prices, broadband rates, and government employment. This study reveals advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting and unveils the complex relationships among the COVID-19 outbreak, transportation systems, employment, land use, and emissions as well as public risk perception and economic factors. The study informs statewide and regional policies to adapt to the new patterns of telecommuting.
