My doctoral thesis examines the emergence of religiously based worldviews, values, and collective imaginaries among Roma/Gitanos in Spain. Juxtaposing long-term ethnographical observation, interviews with religious leaders, and critical text-analysis, I analyse the large-scale religious conversion of Gitanos from Catholicism to Evangelical Pentecostal Christianity in the city of Madrid. My thesis contributes to several fields of social scientific inquiry, including the Sociology of Religion, Anthropology of Christianity, and Romani Studies. By examining how Gitanos engage with Evangelicalism, I also provide a lens through which to comprehend how religion and ethnicity intertwine in contemporary southern Europe and enhance our understanding of the influence of non-Catholic forms of Christianity among social minorities in Mediterranean contexts. Focusing on the role of pastors from the leading Gitano Evangelical Church in Spain, known as the Iglesia Evangélica de Filadelfia (IEF), I argue that through conversion Spanish Gitano believers negotiate vital gendered aspects of their cultural identity and reframe their sense of otherness vis-à-vis non-Gitanos. Challenging social and academic assumptions about the victimhood and lack of agency among Roma people, I show how Gitanos engage with Christianity to re-construct their subjectivity and consciousness, face the consequences of discrimination, and refashion their sense of worth in the Spanish society. In so doing, I place agency at the core of sociological and anthropological thinking. Moreover, I engage with social, media, and political debates about the persistence of Roma/Gitano exclusion and marginality in contemporary capitalist societies and discuss Christianity's role in shaping Gitano notions of identity, gender, belonging, and citizenship. Additionally, my thesis opens new questions and further academic knowledge regarding the ethnographic study of Gitano groups by revealing the intricacies of ethnographic encounters shaped by unequal power relations, negotiations, and conflicting interests. By offering ethnographically grounded insights about the religious conversion of Gitanos, my work contributes to comparative studies of other Evangelical stigmatised minorities in various societies in the world.

This paper seeks to understand the Pentecostal religion in its historical-cultural perspective, considering both aspects to the transition of rural-urban municipality of Franco da Rocha. There is the possibility of studying the arrival of Christ Pentecostal Church and the causes of integration and accommodation in this rural region. On can observe that there is a reverse movement carried out over most of the Brazilian Evangelical churches, which would integrate the layers of urban society, however, research studies indicate that this church is trying in a rural context of transition. This paper presents Pentecostalism in Brazilian culture in its diverse forms of expression, based on case study presented in the context of the rural municipality of Franco da Rocha, it is observed how the culture in its broader aspect is politics, economics or history, a Pentecostal religiosity influences the everyday life that is transformed by this community. The survey notes a kind of evangelical Pentecostal which is beyond the routine aspect presented in the arena of urban religions. It is observed that the accommodation of the Pentecostal religion in an atmosphere of tradition and a rural context, culture configures a different kind of Pentecost in its spectrum, a type of Pentecostalism done mixing, which differs from the types of "Pentecostalism" in existing urban centers.

All the analyses we have developed throughout this dissertation point to a central element in the emergence and development of Pentecostalism, i.e., its raw material – the promise of religious salvation – is based on the idea of social ascension, particularly the ascension related to the integration of sub-integrated social groups to the dynamics of society. The new religion that arose in the USA focused on the needs and social dramas that were specific of the newly arrived to the urban world of the large North-American cities, those who inhabited the periphery of these cities, those that were socially, economically, and ethnically excluded from the core of society. We also analyzed how the same social drama was the basis for the development of Pentecostalism in Latin America and, especially, in Brazil. In this country, a great mass of excluded individuals, also residents of urban peripheries (which proves the non-traditional and modern characteristic of these sectors), found in Pentecostalism the promises of answers to their dramas, mainly the anxiety to become integrated to a world in which they did not belong before. Such integration was embedded in the promise present in the modernity of social ascension. This scenario leads us to the conclusion that Pentecostalism was a religious discourse capable of taking the main promise of modernity to social groups or classes “forgotten” by modern society. Through a religious discourse, Pentecostalism fulfilled the notions of social mobility, and its consequent idea of individual ascension to the mass of people not yet fully integrated to the modern world, but living in it. Following, it became the Christian religion of blacks and mestizos, of the poor and all the others who felt out of place in that world. So the Pentecostalism became a religion of periphery par excellence.

The effort undertaken in this work had as main objective to analyze the Pentecostal religious presence within a prison institution. Its intent was to think how is an encounter between Pentecostal religious practices and daily life in prison from the point of view of the inmates who are religious and inmates who are not religious. We also sought to understand what consequences this meeting causes in terms of behavioral change and building a new prison reality. The field experiments chosen to guide this discussion was the Casa de PrivaÃÃo ProvisÃria de Liberdade Professor Clodoaldo Pinto (CPPL II), more specifically, the Experience A, also known as The A Street or "The Street of brothers." There "the brothers of the work" develop activities of Projeto Renascer. The CPPL II is presented through a careful description of the physical space and everyday ways-to-do of the inmates. In addition, the webs of relationships woven between the prisoners who makes part of "the work" and who are incarcerated in The A Street is analyzed in detail. Finally, I demonstrate how the prisoners of CPPL II demarcate its rules of proceeding from the native category "vacilo" and classify the subject that "vacila" (ie, who violates the rules) as "vacilÃo". Each of the "vacilos" is associated with possible sanctions, which consists basically of "vacilo de morte" and "vacilo de 1000Â". The specificity of the A Street, related to the prisons and the rest of the Streets of CPPL II, is in the action of the inmates of the Projeto Renascer as conflict mediators.

Sustainability has become a prominent global project through which peoples and nations are seeking to alleviate poverty and stop environmental degradation. This thesis explores the contribution that Pentecostalism, a global religious movement of some 500 million people, can make to this project at the several levels of practice, political economy and philosophy. After an initial chapter where the challenges and dimensions of the sustainability project are outlined, the development and characteristics of Pentecostalism as a dynamic global movement are reviewed. This sets the context for a central empirical case study of Citipointe Christian Outreach Centre (a Pentecostal megachurch in Brisbane, Australia). Survey data, content analysis of sermons, and in depth interviews show how one particular congregation is engaging with the social, economic and environmental issues of sustainability. I conclude that although Citipointe’s engagement with sustainability issues at a practical level is weak, their demonstrated commitment to community building and the congregation’s shared worldview indicate potential for a more constructive engagement. In light of global Pentecostal praxis I suggest that Pentecostalism holds greater potential to engage with sustainability than is being realised at Citipointe. This thesis contributes to our understanding of how and why Pentecostals are already engaging in social, economic and environmental issues. More broadly, it develops our understanding of the role Pentecostal Christianity can play in sustainability. This thesis proposes that while Pentecostalism can contribute to sustainability at the level of practice, it can make a deeper contribution by addressing the worldview challenge of sustainability. Pentecostal Christianity does this because it can keep the sustainability discourse open to a wider discussion about God, truth and the purpose of life, rather than limit it to matters of science, technology and public policy.

This dissertation is presented as a contribution to the study of the History and Theology of Argentine Pentecostalism. Attention is given to the social, political and religious context in which the events have taken place and the tendencies deriving from them are examined. The work is divided into three parts. In Part I, the study of the origin and development of Pentecostalism shows the correlation between the historical process and the distinctive features of Argentine society. At the same time the non-denominational and independent origin of the movement is established. Part II provides examples of ministry and predominant theological emphases. Special attention is given to elements that form the pastoral profile, theological education and the ministry of women. In the theological field, besides analysing the development of doctrines common to Pentecostalism, such as baptism in the Holy Spirit and divine healing, the decisive influence of the Latter Rains Movement is underlined. Three models of evangelism which have affected Pentecostal theology and practice are examined. Part III concentrates on movements towards unity and the way in which churches linked to missionary bodies have blocked this process as a result of ideological pressure from their denominational headquarters. The investigation closes with indications of some of the hazards and prospects to which the largest denomination in Argentina and Latin America is exposed.

Streszczenie:
The thesis combines sociocultural anthropology with Darwinism. My ethnographic fieldwork centres on a Pentecostal church in contemporary Britain. Members engage in ecstatic worship that includes glossolalia or speaking in tongues. Utilising a cross-cultural perspective, I suggest that this form of worship is typical in conditions of economic and political deprivation, and in terms of vocalisations, gestures and altered mental states, represents a powerful means of status elevation. I further suggest that ecstatic trance can be seen as an extreme form of "handicap" in Zahavi's sense, as essentially a sociopolitical signal of counter-dominance rather than catharsis (the psychological view) or the expression of cultural themes (the interpretive anthropology view). I regard trance as essentially pathomimetic, i.e. modelled on such pathologies as epilepsy, constituting in other words a kind of "sham epilepsy" which, in rendering the individual temporarily 'insane' and incapacitated, represents the ultimate in collective handicapping. This enables immensely strong bonds to be forged between trance participants. Furthermore, Pentecostalism's strong de-emphasis on material symbols of sacredness and emphasis on God being experienced through performance, which I suggest is typical of nascent religion, allows us to infer the existence of religious activity long before images of divinity began being produced as external figurines or art forms around 35,000 year ago. Finally, the peculiar mental concomitants of trance, which I view as part of a uniquely human capacity I term the alien imagination, are shown to engender highly creative supernatural thought. I propose that trance behaviour may have acted as a 'kick-start' in the evolutionary emergence of novel technological and conceptual frameworks. I thus oppose the cognitivism of writers such as Mithen and favour social factors as causal in cognitive evolution.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, Pentecostalism has started to reshape global Christianity. Many scholars argue that Pentecostalism, including its different waves of renewal, is the world’s fastest-growing movement. Numerous studies were dedicated during the previous decades to examining the spread and characteristics of Pentecostalism in different countries around the world. Nevertheless, little attention has been given to Pentecostalism in Egypt.

This dissertation examines Egyptian Pentecostalism. It presents a historical perspective on Pentecostalism in Egypt and offers a theological analysis of various movements and waves of Egyptian Pentecostalism. Taking into consideration plurality in the Egyptian society, this study situates different permutations of Egyptian Pentecostalism within a wider sociocultural and religious context. Through the examination of Egyptian Pentecostalism, this dissertation fills a notable gap in Pentecostal scholarship and contributes to the historical and theological understanding of global Pentecostalism.

This study explores the religious conversion of young people to Neo-Pentecostalism in Mexico. Neo-Pentecostalism is a new form of belief and worship which emerged in the 1970s, and which is considered the third wave of the Pentecostal movement. The most interesting aspect of this religion lies in its religious proposal, which presents a modern approach to religion. Its popularity seems to reach nonbelievers, Catholics and Protestants, but especially young people. However, to date we still know little about this new religion. Therefore, this study proposes to give a better understanding of Neo-Pentecostalism and to find out why young people find it so appealing. For that reason, conversion stories were collected from young members of a Neo-Pentecostal church in Xalapa, Mexico. This research uses a multifactorial approach to analyse the causes of conversion and to gain a complete overview of the factors infuencing conversions to Neo-Pentecostalism. This thesis argues that young people are becoming Neo-Pentecostal because it offers a new form of religion adapted to their necessities and in conformance with contemporary Mexican society.

Whereas the ecological crisis has elicited a response from many quarters of American Christianity, classical (or denominational) Pentecostals have expressed almost no concern about environmental problems. The reasons for their disregard of the environment lie in the Pentecostal worldview which finds expression in their: (1) tradition; (2) view of human and natural history; (3) common theological beliefs; and (4) scriptural interpretation. All these aspects of Pentecostalism emphasize and value the supernatural--conversely viewing nature as subordinate, dependent and temporary. Therefore, the ecocrisis is not problematic because, for Pentecostals, the natural environment is: of only relative value; must serve the divine plan; and will soon be destroyed and replaced. Furthermore, Pentecostals are likely to continue their environmental disregard, since the supernaturalism which spawns it is key to Pentecostal identity.

In Argentina, Pentecostalism had a breakthrough in the early 1980s, and today more than 10 per cent of the population are Pentecostals. The revival coincided with a socio-political transformation of Argentinean society. After half a century of dictatorships and Peronism, democracy was restored, and structural changes paved the way for a certain “autonomisation” of politics, law, economy, science and religion. The "new" form of society that developed resembles what in this study is called a Western model, which to a large degree is currently being diffused on a global scale. This work examines the new religious sphere and how Pentecostals relate to society at large, and the political and judicial sphere in particular. Social systems theory and an idea of communication as constitutive of social spheres, such as religious, political and judicial ones, form the theoretical foundation for the study. Methods that have been used are fieldwork, interviews and analyses of written material. It is concluded that evangelisation and transformation are of major concern to Pentecostals in contemporary Argentina and that this follows a global trend. Evangelisation has always been important to, even a hallmark of, Pentecostalism. What has become as important is the urge for transformation, of the individual, the family and society. This leads to increased socio-political engagement. However, Pentecostals do not have a “fixed” idea of how society should be organised, i.e., they do not yet have a full-fledged political theology, a public theology or what could be called a Pentecostal ideology. This is mainly because they experience a lack of “compatibility” between the Pentecostal and the political communication. Their approaches to socio-political concerns seem to be based on an understanding of certain “values” as the fundamental building block of society.

American minister John Graham Lake (1870-1935) was a pivotal participant in an era of profound religious and political transition. Surprisingly, Lake's often provocative life had previously been largely neglected as a field of academic inquiry. In the U.S. Lake associated with key Holiness, Wesleyan and Apostolic Faith charismatics like John Alexander Dowie of the Zion City, Illinois Utopia, Charles Parham of the Topeka Revival and William Seymour of the Azusa Street Revival. Lake served as an important intermediary between Parham's often reactionary, white orientation that was unreceptive to an enthusiastic black liturgy and Seymour's expansive African-American egalitarianism expressed through exuberant spirit manifestations. Lake's South African ministry was shaped by his middle class white business background, Azusa Street message and American perspectives. He brought together the faith healing movement inspired by Dutch Reformed minister Andrew Murray, P. Ie Roux's black and white Zion charismatic adherents affiliated with Dowie and the new U.S. Pentecostalism of Parham and Seymour. Lake's African-American influenced Pentecostalism was compatible with indigenous African worship. His emphasis on the spiritual needs of the disempowered found a receptive audience in talented black evangelists Elias Letwaba and Edward Lion. Even though acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi, Lake did not undertake a South African social gospel-type civil protest against societal injustice. In fact, Lake's participation with Afrikaner politicians like Louis Botha in fashioning a segregationist land use law was most troubling. Lake was ambivalent about racial integration. His belief in an egalitarian status for all Christians, his Populist/Progressive ethics and his enthusiastic promotion of women's rights were complicated by his advocacy, or at least tolerance, of some disparate racial treatment in his Apostolic Faith Mission and South African society at large. Lake's paternalism and notion of Westem cultural superiority conflicted with his love of all persons. Lake's otherworldly prioritization of individual spiritualism over a socioeconomic agenda usually stymied activism. His uncharacteristic use of nonviolent protest to protect faith healing formed a remarkable contrast with his reluctance to actively campaign against unequal racial treatment in Africa and America. Historiographical perspectives on Lake range from the saintly pioneer charismatic missionary to the Elmer Gantry type charlatan acting only for personal benefit. Lake was a unique personality with his flamboyant rhetoric, strong convictions and feelings of personal worth. His distinctive Jesus as healing and suffering God theology evidenced both consistency with precedent as well as creative anticipation. Shortcomings resulting from his preference to address social concerns on an individual spiritual rather than societal level, his liberties with truth and his bad business judgments resulting in litigation. Nevertheless, Lake's life demonstrated that a gifted but imperfect instrument could accomplish a meaningful ministry.

It is understood here, syncretism as "coexistence of conflicting objects" (Bastide, 1973, p. 143), or religious practices that are historically divergent. Christianity has opposed the spiritual practice from its origin; However, some religious groups generally called spiritualists, proposes an integration of spiritualism to Christianity, there are those religious groups that even without address us in favor of a syncretic ideology, has in its very praxis of syncretism . Pentecostalism generally resembles syncretic movements. My goal is to understand how is the transition from a religious movement to another and check how is the coexistence of divergent thinking before. The method of qualitative observation observing their rituals and customs current and comparing them with the rituals antigos. Além empirical observation was used to collect data was printed through research, dissemination Film provided by the leader of the study subject who visit the Church of the Nazarene Cabral ( INC ) . This work investigates, through observation, the training of religious leadership and supporters of such movements ; Upon observation it was found that there was migration of other religion for that particular syncretic movement, both by its members and leadership . It was also found that people who attend this church has no idea that some of their practices has similarities with some spiritualistic practice. Their meetings are based more on the music and emotionalism than any dogma. People arriving coming from another religious thread does not receive much education about the local church. Are received and inserted in the current context with the only requirement to recognize Jesus Christ as their only Savior . Given all that follows, this church researched the reasons that led its members to practice syncretism are associated with Brazilian culture that in their formation is influenced by the mix of Amerindian, African and European religions . In search of a religion to fill the existential void that occur in these individuals they found in the INC, a quick and uncomplicated answer to their religious practice. The leading turn is not concerned with a primary education . His method is to first receive guidance later. And so this syncretic church emerges.

The paper analyzes the changes occurring in the mainline Protestant churches religious field current. From the analysis of a case study in a historic church in Rio de Janeiro, the research seeks to understand which elements can be identified in the religious experience of this community, which indicate trannformações in their religious identity. The reflection part of a discussion of the notion of Pentecostalization, Which in the context of the religious evangelical, has been used as an element that symbolizes the struggle between identity groups linked to historical Protestantism and Pentecostal movements. The text makes an analysis on the tensions between traditional groups, linked to what was here called Protestant intelligentsia, which makes use of the term as accusatory category, ie Pentecostalization for these sectors would be akind of degeneration of the tradition of the historic churches. The research aims to rethink this category that appears in the religious field, discussing the theoretical aspects of the charge to the Pentecostals and their influence on the field as a religious magic that is faced by religion in this intellectualized historical tradition of Protestantism. The notion of Pentecostalization used in this research indicates that beyond this dichotomy magic (Pentecostal) and religion (historical), there are important changes in the evangelical religious identity, where the historic churches are talking and redefining the matrix elements for the purpose of Pentecostal resignficar these practices to diaolgar with the changes in the evangelical field day, especially given the growth of the Pentecostal movement.

Streszczenie:
Pentecostalism is on the rise in various parts of the world, particularly in Africa. Several studies have emerged in recent years that have attempted to explain the reasons for the movement’s proliferation. The focus of this thesis is on the Pentecostal revival in Nigeria, which, it is argued, can be seen as a new form of religious life that revolves around three central themes. The first is a new form of religious attitude that I describe as the Pentecostal experience that is generated by the ‘collective effervescence’. This experience is achieved through the rites and rituals of worship that consists in prayer, praise-worship and other forms of religious performance underpinned by feelings of spirituality. I argue that a consideration of the Pentecostal experience not only offers greater insight into the African religious attitude, but also marks an improvement on the religious experience theories of thinkers like William James. The second theme is the vehicle through which the Pentecostal experience is achieved: the body. The thesis discusses the role of the body and argues for its centrality to Nigerian Pentecostalism through its dynamic expressivity and sacred performance. The third theme of the thesis is the Nigerian Pentecostal approach to the scriptures. I contrast the oral aspects of African cultures with Western literary culture of the scriptures to argue that the dynamism of ecstatic performance that we find in the oral culture has informed the Pentecostal approach to biblical texts. Additional insights into these themes are provided by an ethnographic study of a Nigerian Pentecostal Church in London. The thesis also argues against the highly influential social deprivation explanation that has been advanced by a number of authorities. Overall it builds on existing studies of African Pentecostalism and breaks new ground in Pentecostalism scholarship.

CAPES
The central object of this research is the process of conversion of individuals to Pentecostalism in poor neighborhoods in Salvador, Brazil. This research will analyze the way of introduction the converted in the religious community, as well as it will look toward the process of teaching and learning the religious experience, both in rituals and in the everyday life. This research consists in a ethnographic approach which the methodology of research is based on the participant observation of the converted’s everyday life, as well as the converter´s one. For this, individuals who live in poor neighborhoods in Salvador (Pau da Lima, Castelo Branco, Paripe etc.) and participate of Pentecostal churches were selected to be interviewed. The collaborators offered informations about their experiences both in formal interviews and in common talks. Notwithstanding, it were made descriptions of rituals and everyday moments that involve process of teaching and learning the religious experience in Pentecostalism – as well as were done videos and taken pictures. In those descriptions I paid attention to the techniques of religious agents in the transformations of the new adept´s experience and in the new adepts’ agency in the changes of their social identities.

This thesis examines a Taiwanese Pentecostal church's engagement with the Chinese restaurant business in southern California and its cultural significance in today's transnational world. This thesis provides insight into how the Taiwanese Pentecostal church creates a transnational imagined community for negotiating religious identity through business practices and constructs a ''third place" among consumers of Chinese food in southern California. This thesis seeks to fill the gap in literature on Pentecostalism by arguing the Taiwanese Pentecostal church's restaurant business can be seen as a new form of Pentecostal expression emerging in the global era of the 21st century. Its flourishing restaurant business facilitates its transnational outreach and networks and thus suggests a new dimension of religious transnationalism. This thesis provides a framework for examining these networks and understanding how indigenized Taiwanese Pentecostal churches engage in business to survive in today's competitive global market of religion.

I (Andrew Jamieson) discuss my creative process, centered around the transcendence of structures, or the dialogue between them. I define structures broadly, from musical meter and texture to political structures and life circumstances. My core inspiration is black Pentecostal worship. I illustrate black Pentecostalism with examples from City of Refuge United Church of Christ in San Francisco. Visiting this church, I experienced music and communal interaction with a clear structure that facilitated presence of the Holy Spirit and even the ability challenge oppressive circumstances. In a similar way, experimental musicians, such as Sun Ra and John Oswald, present and challenge established structures, from jazz grooves to preexisting recorded music and the institutional structure it represents.

My own work, Where Perhaps It's Worse, presents structures from preexisting musical material against which musicians perform their own material and express my own ideas. The primary structural backdrop is the third movement of Luciano Berio's Sinfonia, itself a quote collage. I explore the various ways my work challenges both musical and extramusical structures.

In this thesis we discuss the intersections between the expansion of Protestant Pentecostalism and local cultures that are the target of its evangelizing. More specifically, we intend to demonstrate, from studies conducted in various regions of the state of Minas Gerais and northern Portugal, how certain cultural conformations tend to be extremely refractory to implantation and limit the growth of Pentecostal churches. We aim to relativize some theoretical issues that have been called "the paradigm of rational choice in religion", which in one jump out of the sociological theory of religion understood seek in Economy your main ideas. In several ways, this thesis will defend historical-structural processes that influence the demand for religion and especially the production and consumption of religious goods are embedded in social relations face-to-face. Thus, we do not believe the state regulations are the main variable when it comes to religious diversity. Furthermore, we believe that this role falls to the societal relations that limit and regulate the transit of individuals among religious denominations.

This dissertation takes evangelical practices of assistance as a privileged object to analyze the relations between religion and the public sphere, which are understood as an arena for the mediation of meanings. Based on the approach designed by Habermas, the hypothesis is that assistance is something that would guide us in attributing verisimilitude to certain public positions, for it allows for very particular connections between different discursive fields (such as religion, law, politics, economy), and the more complex these connections are, the more encompassing argumentation will be; as a consequence, the greater is the probability that it will be taken into consideration in the public sphere. Elements from the theory of practice formulated by Bourdieu are also used to analyze these relations. The result is that the different arrangements that make it possible to broaden the meanings attributed to assistance are closely related to dispositions which, although they are shared, may be resorted to differently in each context of action. In order to think of how these relations are produced and how different codes shared are arranged, an ethnography of the agents and practices of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God and the Brazilian National Evangelical Network of Social Action was carried out

The research has aimed to understand how a Neopentecostal pastor, founder of a church located at Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro, is able to build and keep a system of distribution, redistribution and manipulation of symbolic goods among his followers, through his charismatic leadership. This study tries to show the power dynamics between charisma and leader recognition inside the church, among the founder and the other pastors, presbyteries and members, and also outside of it, when this church self defined as an Assembly of God has no part of any convention of this denomination. We suggest that, despite defined as a kind of Assembly of God, this church assumes a Neopentecostal ethos of autonomous churches, and can be identified, using a native terminology, as Renewed Assembly of God. To reach the proposed aims, we carried out a field research with participant observation, interviews, and also a small survey.

The construction of the Temple of Solomon - in this work named as New Temple of Solomon - was announced in 2010 by Bishop Edir Macedo as a great project to be held in São Paulo City by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). Since its birth in 2014, in addition to a convertion of its aesthetics (or appearance) applied in this sacred space with the use of objects, vestments and decoration with Jewish motifs , the UCKG praxis underwent substantial changes; which include doctrinal, discursive, liturgical, architectural, and symbolic aspects that affected all temples from this denomination. Such changes directly reflect the sense that the UCKG is trying to build around the elements that constitute its new sanctuary. The origins, motives and the way in which this process of resignification of the Jewish symbolism, realized by the Universal, is the core to understand what is behind this unique enterprise in world, that was chosen like the main study object of this work. The purpose of this research is to show that, besides being a mega temple built in the capital of the homonymous state of São Paulo and the maximum symbol of power of the denomination founded by Edir Macedo, the New Temple of Solomon is an expansion project from Universal Church of the Kingdom of God for the next years.

This thesis investigates the historical intersections between Pentecostalism and Weberian sociology, beginning with the simultaneous publication of Max Weber’s Protestant Ethic and the emergence of Pentecostal spirituality at the Azusa Street Revival, and culminating in an analysis of recent claims that Pentecostals possess an equivalent to what Max Weber called "an ethic of inner-worldly asceticism", and consequently Pentecostalism may be a positive force for economic growth in developing countries.

A pesquisa abrangeu tanto as eleições legislativas quanto executivas.
This research analyses the electoral dynamics within a Pentecostal church of the denomination Assembly of God, in one of its main ministries, the ministry of Belém, during the election of 2014 and 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil. The investigation approached both institutional and membership levels. In the institutional dimension, I analyzed what speeches were delivered, in the high clergy and in a common temple, and how the institution were organized in electoral terms to manifest this speech. In the membership dimension, I analyzed how they react to the institution acts and speeches, and also the shaping of the points of view and how they affected them in the electoral level, considering the influence of the church and also socioeconomics issues. The observation conducted covered both legislative and executive levels. This investigation found different types and intensities of engagement from the institution in the legislative and executive levels, and also the growth of the anti-PT speech. In the membership dimension, I found a strong support of the candidates promoted by the church in the proportional level, but also subjective differences between them. In 2016 election, we observe the emergence of a group of members that disagreed of the church`s promoted candidate. We also found the growth of the anti-PT along the period, what resulted in the near disappearance of the lulista group in 2016. Analyzing the behavior and the points of view of the members, the found important differences in the ways they think and chooses politics in legislatives and executives elections. We explained these differences by this way of thinking in each one of these levels, where the legislative is seen as an arena dispute of values, and the executive as the level of material disputes.

Members of evangelic protestant denominations have achieved in recent decades a new visibility in Brazil, owing as much to an extraordinary increase in their numbers as to their unexpected presence in the political arena. It is against the background of such developments that this research attempts to analyze the specificity of the church Renascer em Cristo within the neopentecostal religious field. While it appeals to young people and to middle class businessman, by means of aesthetic devices which surprisingly bring together sacred elements, mass media, and the entertainment industry, the church has turned into a powerful enterprise managed according to principles of modern entrepreneurial rationality. Its capacity to mobilize people is displayed in gigantic shows, which give it a greater visibility and extend its influence beyond its institutional boundaries. It is this mobilization capacity that politicians try to gather in their support in the political arena, without, however, having the same success as the religious enterprise. In fact, the power displayed by the church in gathering such support is based on sacredness and to sacredness it must return. More than political power, then, what is in fact at stake is symbolic power, or the capacity for a religious discourse to encompass within its own logic wider and wider segments of the profane life experience of the people, and confer upon them new meanings, in light of the uncertainties of a world in transformation.
