Streszczenie:
AbstractFollowing the failure of the French maritime force at the Battle of Trafalgar, Napoleon sought to dominate Europe through his ‘Continental System’, using large, conscripted, land forces to control nation states and close European ports to British trade. To counter this denial of economic opportunity Britain deployed a large force to the Iberian Peninsula in 1808. Thus ensued the Peninsular War of 1808–14. This article discusses some of the medical advances identified from the war, including force health protection measures, surgical techniques and medical evacuation.

Streszczenie:
Between 1808 and 1814 England was committed to an expensive and bloody campaign against the French invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. The Peninsular War, as it came to be known, was initially celebrated as a war of national independence that attracted widespread support. Soon after, it was characterised by political scandal and public controversy. Literary scholars have devoted much attention to the political, social and cultural effects of the French Revolution, but have written surprisingly little about the later years of the campaign against Napoleonic France. The principle objective of this thesis is to offer the first in-depth study of English theatre during the Peninsular War. It considers the most popular plays in performance, and asks what their staging, publication, and reception history reveal about a nation’s literary tastes and its political self-awareness. Sheridan’s Pizarro, a play about the Spanish conquest of Peru, was one of the most successful plays on the Romantic stage. A close analysis of this play considers its popularity between 1799 and 1815, and what it suggests about the flexibility of the contemporary repertoire system. Audiences’ ability to ascribe topical inflections to old plays helps explain the demand for Shakespeare and the bard’s political import to wartime audiences. This thesis explores the London patent stages and popular minor theatres, where programmes were restricted to song, dance, and spectacle. It also offers a case study of provincial theatre in Bristol, underscoring the significant limitations in assumptions that the metropolitan stage was representative of national trends. Archival research on the London and Bristol stages has been crucial to this study, which is based on an examination of playbills, memoranda, letters, playtexts, and prints. The newsprint and cartoons discussed offer an important political and historical framework, suggestive of the cultural expectations likely to have influenced contemporary playgoers.

Streszczenie:
As the Napoleonic Wars convulsed Europe during the early nineteenth century, many more British young men than ever before became army officers, particularly during the latter part of the conflict, fought in Spain and Portugal between 1808 and 1814. The Peninsular War provided not only employment, but also the opportunity to climb the social ladder. As this thesis will demonstrate, the majority of British army commissions in this period were not purchased, and it was these men who later came to settle in the Australian colonies. After the demobilization of the British army following the battle of Waterloo in 1815, many officers found themselves on half-pay, doing the rounds of government offices seeking colonial positions; some were successful and were appointed to New South Wales. As well, many of those who came to New South Wales in garrison regiments, from 1817 onwards, found the place appealing and decided to settle. These British army officers, and those others who came in the next couple of decades, were a unique group of emigrants because of the skills they brought with them acquired in the army: self-discipline, self-reliance, the knowledge of how to discipline men, reconnaissance and exploring techniques, mapping, survey, engineering, town planning, medical skills and the building of roads and bridges. They were also Protestant, educated, literate and artistic men, and the carriers of British colonizing notions. They arrived at an opportune time to fill key positions in the newly created civil services in New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. They also took advantage of British government regulations and obtained land grants under favourable conditions, something hitherto unattainable for them in Britain. In any case, it was mutually beneficial for the British Government and the Australian colonies to plant ex-army officers in what was the colony farthest away from Britain. Also revealed are the social networks created by Peninsular War veterans on the other side of the world, and their influence in the Australian colonies. These networks made an impact on the exercise of the law, marriage and settlement patterns, and the social and public life of the colonies. Many of the men who in earlier histories have been called 'the founding fathers' of Australia had a Peninsular War background and developed related social networks. John Macarthur proposed to Commissioner Bigge in1821 that the colony of New South Wales needed 'really respectable settlers'. Peninsular War veterans proved to be ideal in this respect, and in many others besides. The role of these veterans demonstrates key aspects of the emergence of the 'second' British Empire in the early nineteenth century, and also the change in the nature of the colony of New South Wales, from a penal and military society to a free one.

Mortality rates in developing countries have shown a rapidly declining trend since the end of World War II. Countries like Malaysia, Taiwan, Mauritius, Jamaica, and Mexico have increased life expectancy at birth at an average of over a year annually between the 1940's and 1960's (Gwatkin, 1980:616). There appeared to be special causes; probably due to control of endemic disease. Many developing countries have recorded life expectancy gains three or more times as great as those achieved in Western Europe at a comparable stage in its mortality transition (Gwatkin, 1980:616).

Streszczenie:
The Residence of Chrysaliskos is one of the most interesting Late Hellenistic fortified con structions, situated in the north-eastern part of the Taman Peninsula. It was excavated in 1970- 1973 by Nikolay Sokol’skiy. This house, which was a residence of a powerful Bosporan official during the reign of king Asandros, was destroyed in a great fire. In the layers of destruction, an important pottery assemblage was unearthed. The materials from the excavations have been preliminary published but without any special analysis of the ceramic complex. We could not distinguish exactly all the production centers of this pottery without ar chaeometric studies, but according to visual characteristics the main part of them belong to Bosporan sigillata, a local group of pottery distributed only in the Bosporan kingdom. Some Pergamene and Knidian vessels as well as their local imitations were also found here. A sepa rate group of pottery of the same shape as Bosporan sigillata was covered with black slip. Several lekythos and unguentaria are also present in the article. Lamps of jug-shape type, typical for the late Hellenistic period, are the most common group among lighting equipment. This article is the revised version of the publication in English in the volume of the Inter national Association for Research on Pottery of the Hellenistic Period (Lomtadze, Zhuravlev 2020). All the parallels for different pottery groups came from Crimea and Taman peninsula, as well as from other regions of the Black sea area and Mediterranean, mainly from the contexts of the second quarter of the 1st century BC From our point of view the Residence of Chrysaliskos could have been destroyed in the late third – early fourth quarter of the 1st century B.C., however it is still not evident what exact historic events could have caused such considerable devastation

This article analyzes the process of coastal landscape management in the Mexican tourist region from the transformation of the landscape of Punta de Mita. This peninsula is part of the interstate metropolitan zone of Puerto Vallarta - Bahía de Banderas, located between the State of Jalisco and State of Nayarit. It is one of three coastal metropolitan zones of Mexico. This research has a qualitative approach and adopts the concept of the landscape defined by the European Landscape Convention as “any part of the territory, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors” (Council of Europe, 2000). The units of analysis were the peninsular zone of Punta de Mita and the actors who participated in their transformation. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews with key informants selected using the snowball technique, qualitative observation, review of official documentary sources (plans, projects, reports) as well as historiographical and aerial photographs. The identification of the participation of each type of actor is highlighted in the transformation of the landscape: the State provides the land and enables for tourism investment; economic actors take ownership and monetize their aesthetic values; social actors are deprived of the use and enjoyment of the landscape. The symbols printed on the territory are mainly touristic and, in the second instance, natural whose conservation represents a point of agreement between the state and the residents.

Droughts are constantly threatening the global water availability and food securities worldwide. This study aims to evaluate the short- and long-term (1-, 6- and 12-month) drought conditions in Peninsular Malaysia during 1989-2018 using Standardized Precipitation Index and Evaporative Demand Drought Index. Historical trends of drought conditions were analyzed using modified Mann-Kendall test. Spearman’s ρ approach was also applied to examine the spatial patterns of correlations between these drought indices. Based on the findings, Evaporative Demand Drought Index shows increasing tendency towards drier conditions in the northern half of Peninsular Malaysia, but opposite trends are observed for Standardized Precipitation Index. The time series of Evaporative Demand Drought Index are generally well-correlated to that of Standardized Precipitation Index at all three timescales for the whole study area, except for the northern region. The evidence presented suggests Evaporative Demand Drought Index is a great alternative for drought monitoring applications in Peninsular Malaysia.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Natural hydrogen is one of the key elements in the green energy initiative for the carbon net zero strategy of the world. Serpentinization is known as the most common process that generates natural hydrogen. This research work is aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the mineralogical composition and distribution of ophiolites in Peninsular Malaysia and to evaluate the potential of natural hydrogen generated from serpentinization processes. Field studies were conducted in various areas along the Bentong-Raub suture zone to study ophiolite rock occurrences in the suture zone. Standard petrographic and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses were conducted to examine the mineralogical and chemical composition of rocks samples. The results show the majority of samples contain a significant amount of serpentine minerals such as antigorite, cronstedtite and lizardite, as well as some unaltered ultramafic minerals (e.g., forsterite, fayalite, pyroxene and hornblende), and secondary minerals (e.g., magnetite and chromite). The degree of serpentinization varies between 15% and 93% of the bulk volume with most samples exceeding 75%. Samples collected at Sungai Koyan, Cheroh, Bentong, and Bukit Rokan are characterized by high concentrations of antigorite, a type of Mg-rich serpentine. In contrast, cronstedtite, a Fe-rich serpentine mineral, is the dominant species in the samples from the Petaseh area. The mineralogy of the samples indicates hydrogen generation occurred via the reaction between fayalite (Fe-rich olivine) reaction with water, which is consistent with the observation that a significant amount of magnetite was found within samples from the Petaseh outcrop. Findings from a geochemical and mineralogical analysis reveal a significant serpentinization process along the Bentong-Raub suture zone, ultimately producing a substantial amount of hydrogen. These results highlight a potential natural hydrogen source in Peninsular Malaysia; however, supplementary research is necessary for further evaluation.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of peninsular arranged perforated benches containing plants on the indoor environment of a naturally ventilated greenhouse. The results are compared to a greenhouse containing peninsular arranged solid benches with no plants. The investigation will be conducted numerically using three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. The overall temperature and velocity distribution were investigated at different sections of the greenhouse. The temperature and velocity distributions at plant level were of particular interest. Results indicated that the greenhouse containing the perforated benches were in general cooler, but also exhibited higher velocities throughout. The velocities observed were higher than those recommended by ASHRAE [1]. It was concluded that care should be taken when placing plants on the perforated benches especially in the regions adjacent to the walls, as this can lead to non-uniform crop production.

In the last issue of HYPANIS, a generalising article, “The Abrau Peninsula in Roman Times”, was published. It discusses one of the periods (first century BC – fifth century AD) in the history of the Southeastern periphery of the Asian Bosporos. The present article systematises the historical and archaeological data of this region in the Early Iron Age (8th–1st centuries BC). Therefore, combined, these publications allow us to recreate a panorama that covers a wide chronological range, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. The growing Western influence on the ethnopolitical development in the region is reflected in the historical and archaeological periodization of the region in the Early Iron Age: the pre-colonial period, the emporial period and the period associated with intra-Bosporan colonisation. Based on the available archaeological data, the Abrau Peninsula was sparsely populated during the pre-colonization period, and the local communities led a traditional, fragmented way of life. During the sixth–fifth centuries BC the region became the demographic optimum for the population of the foothills of the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus, which is explained by it being equally distant from the Greek and Graeco-Scythian political centres of Sindica and the opportunity to receive dividends from the emporial development of the region. The intra-Bosporan colonisation of the Northern part of the Abrau Peninsula (4th–2nd centuries BC) was aimed at the realisation of the agrarian opportunities of the region, accompanied by the Hellenization of the native Sindoi population, which, as it seems, also suggested its gradual subjugation and assimilation. The desolation observed in the Southern part of the Abrau Peninsula, populated by the Kerketai and Toretai, can be explained by the Bosporan urge to protect nautical and other economic activities from pirates. Apparently, this problem was successfully solved by migrants from the plain regions of the Trans-Kuban region, who settled in the Eastern part of the Anansko-Natukhaevskaya Valley.

The new detail lithological map of the underwater shore slope of the northern Sambian peninsula and the Russian part of the Curonian spit in 1:50 000 scale is created. For the first time, the stretched zone of very fine sands is outlined at depths of 25-30 m of the Curonian spit underwater slope. These sands are relicts, and their formation is connected with accumulative processes on the ancient shores of the Baltic Sea. Separate morpho-lithodynamic cells are distinguished on the submarine slope of the northern Sambian peninsula coast up to a depth of 20 m. The cape areas of the Sambian peninsula serve as cell boundaries where a divergence of sediment trend and seabed erosion are observed. The convergence of sediment transport directions is confined to the bight’s central parts. Fine and very fine-grained sand accumulation prevails here.

Abstract Objectives/Scope Field-X was first discovered in 1979, comprising of saturated oil reservoirs with several shallower non-associated gas reservoirs. Field-X is currently producing from several oil producers. X8 well was recently drilled, completed, and produce from A and B reservoirs. However, 5 months later, the oil rate has been reduced by half with gas oil ratio (GOR) increased up to 5 times. Consequently, the well had to be shut-in due to reservoir management plan (RMP) violation. X9 well was drilled and completed, but 5 years later the well started experiencing the sustained production casing pressure (PCP) and was forced to shut-in in the following year with the locked-in potential of both A and B reservoirs. To diagnose the root cause of high GOR (HGOR) in X8 well and sustained PCP in X9 well, the Spectral Noise Log (SNL) was deployed. The main advantage of utilizing SNL is its capability of detecting fluid movement behind tubing and casing. High differential pressure creates lots of fluid movement, which generates higher noise amplitude. Meanwhile, smaller pores or leaks generate higher frequency noise that can be easily picked up by SNL. SNL tool was run in flowing condition for X8 well and the results indicated the HGOR zones were mainly contributed by the shallower B05 sand which was flowing through the leaked 4-1/2″ liner packer. Temperature deflections also indicated that the liner packer seal was leaking and B05 reservoir was contributing to the production. The liner packer leak and B05 reservoir flow would not have been detected by conventional production logging tools as the flow was happening beyond the tubing and casing. For X9 well, SNL was run in the wellbore whilst pumping water via annulus, through the leaks and flowing back up the tubing. Three tubing leaks were successfully detected from the SNL run, whereas previous conventional noise log only managed to detect 2 leaks. It is possible that the third small leak was very small, hence the conventional tool was unable to detect it. X8 well successfully back online with 8.4% rate increase than last production with GOR reduced back to initial GOR and X9 well successfully back online as per last production rate. The liner packers which are not permanent barriers for reservoir isolation and allocation can be validated, moreover, verifying that tubing leakage is mainly contributed by tubing joints, which can be used as the main input in tubing materials selection in the future. Well integrity issues can cause significant loss of production, oil spill or worst case, even loss of lives. Proper selection in data acquisition tools helps to accurately diagnose well integrity issues that can be swiftly addressed. In the low oil price environment, skimming down on data acquisition costs may not uncover the true underlying well issues or reservoir issues, but might jeopardize future projects to be undertaken in years to come.

Streszczenie:
The Boothia Peninsula - Somerset Island region of north-central Nunavut is a frontier region (70-74°N, 94°W) long considered as part of Rae craton. Recent field mapping and acquisition of isotopic (U-Pb, Sm-Nd) data as part of the GEM-2 Boothia-Somerset project allowed this region's exposed Precambrian bedrock to be better characterized with respect to petrology and litho-geochemistry, and to be more extensively and more precisely time-calibrated. The discovery of unique, possibly exotic, basement characterized by a ca. 2.55-2.51 Ga TTG suite overlain by ca. 2.5 Ga metasedimentary rocks, cut by 2.49- 2.48 Ga plutons, are all atypical components of the Archean Rae crust. This new knowledge and the hint of similar 'Boothia terrane' crust south of Boothia Peninsula (Ryan et al., 2009), east of the Queen Maud block (Davis et al., 2014) in central Nunavut, and in northernmost Saskatchewan (Cloutier et al., 2021), raised the possibility this terrane may extend >1600 km across north-central Canada. During the foundational year of GEM-GeoNorth, the extent of Boothia terrane crust was explored through legacy samples collected during the 2012 GEM Frontiers' transect across mainland Nunavut. As part of this new study, field descriptions, photographic records and legacy samples were examined, and new U-Pb zircon geochronology was acquired. The new data and knowledge were used to: i) identify new components of Boothia terrane on the mainland southwest of Boothia Peninsula; ii) further distinguish this crust from that of Rae affinity; and iii) better constrain the depositional age of Sherman Group metasedimentary rocks.

Dust storms can be hazardous for aviation, military activities, and respiratory health and can occur on a wide variety of spatiotemporal scales with little to no warning. To properly forecast these storms, a comprehensive understanding of the meteorological dynamics that control their evolution is a prerequisite. To that end, we chose a major dust storm that occurred in Southwest Asia during July–August 2018 and conducted an observation-based analysis of the meteorological conditions that influenced the storm’s evolution. We found that the main impetus behind the dust storm was a large-scale meteorological system (i.e., a cyclone) that affected Southwest Asia. It seems that cascading effects from this system produced a smaller, near-surface warm anomaly in Mesopotamia that may have triggered the dust storm, guided its trajectory over the Arabian Peninsula, and potentially catalyzed the development of a small low-pressure system over the southeastern end of the peninsula. This low-pressure system may have contributed to some convective activity over the same region. This type of analysis may provide important information about large-scale meteorological forcings for not only this particular dust storm but also for future dust storms in Southwest Asia and other regions of the world.

In July 2021, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted a Law on Indigenous Peoples. It provides a framework for the protection of the rights of the indigenous peoples of the Crimean Peninsula, namely Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks, and excludes Mariupol Greeks as a minority potentially qualifying for the status of the fourth indigenous group residing outside of Crimea. What was the general context of the adoption of the Law? What rights does it envisage? And what could the Law potentially bring to the recognized indigenous peoples? This blog post attempts to answer these questions.

A calibrated hydrodynamic and sediment transport model of the Upper Mississippi River, from Thebes, Illinois, to Birds Point, Missouri, was created to investigate hydraulics and sediment transport in the river channel and across the Dogtooth Island Peninsula (DIP) as the result of the Len Small levee breach. A hydrodynamic model was developed for the reach and calibrated to stage and breach outflow discharge data for the floods of 2011, 2015–2016, and 2017. The hydrodynamic model was used to investigate breach outflow discharges and shear stress distribution over the DIP. Soil and geologic maps were investigated to determine soil parameters and the long-term stability of soil formations on the DIP. The Upper Mississippi River sediment transport model was built upon the hydrodynamic model and soil mapping efforts. The sediment transport model was calibrated to the 2015 and 2017 flood events. Calibration data were limited to changes in elevation, which were then areally averaged, computed from comprehensive channel surveys and lidar data for the DIP. This model provides a solid foundation for comparing alternative measures to minimize further erosion of the DIP and for analyzing the risk of a channel cutoff occurring.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, is executing the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Study coastal storm risk management (CSRM) project for the region. The project is currently in the feasibility phase. The primary goal is to develop CSRM measures that maximize national net economic development benefits. This report documents the coastal storm water level and wave hazard, including sea level rise, for a variety of flood risk management alternatives. Four beach restoration alternatives for Galveston Island and Bolivar peninsula were evaluated. Suites of synthetic tropical and historical non-tropical storms were developed and modeled. The CSTORM coupled surge-and-wave modeling system was used to accurately characterize storm circulation, water level, and wave hazards using new model meshes developed from high-resolution land and sub-aqueous surveys for with- and without-project scenarios. Beach morphology stochastic response was modeled with a Monte Carlo life-cycle simulation approach using the CSHORE morphological evolution numerical model embedded in the StormSim stochastic modeling system. Morphological and hydrodynamic response were primarily characterized with probability distributions of the number of rehabilitations and overflow.

Streszczenie:
The Goldenville horizon in the Baie Verte Peninsula is an important stratigraphic horizon that hosts primary (Cambrian to Ordovician) exhalative magnetite and pyrite and was a chemical trap for younger (Silurian to Devonian) orogenic gold mineralization. The horizon is overlain by basaltic flows and volcaniclastic rocks, is intercalated with variably coloured argillites and cherts, and underlain by mafic volcaniclastic rocks; the entire stratigraphy is cut by younger fine-grained mafic dykes and coarser gabbro. Lithogeochemical signatures of the Goldenville horizon allow it to be divided into high-Fe iron formation (HIF; >50% Fe2O3), low-Fe iron formation (LIF; 15-50% Fe2O3), and argillite with iron minerals (AIF; <15% Fe2O3). These variably Fe-rich rocks have Fe-Ti-Mn-Al systematics consistent with element derivation from varying mineral contributions from hydrothermal venting and ambient detrital sedimentation. Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized rare earth element (REE) signatures for the HIF samples have negative Ce anomalies and patterns similar to modern hydrothermal sediment deposited under oxygenated ocean conditions. The PAAS-normalized REE signatures of LIF samples have positive Ce anomalies, similar to hydrothermal sediment deposited under anoxic to sub-oxic conditions. The paradoxical Ce behaviour is potentially explained by the Mn geochemistry of the LIF samples. The LIF have elevated MnO contents (2.0-7.5 weight %), suggesting that Mn from hydrothermal fluids was oxidized in an oxygenated water column during hydrothermal venting, Mn-oxides then scavenged Ce from seawater, and these Mn-oxides were subsequently deposited in the hydrothermal sediment. The Mn-rich LIF samples with positive Ce anomalies are intercalated with HIF with negative Ce anomalies, both regionally and on a metre scale within drill holes. Thus, the LIF positive Ce anomaly signature may record extended and particle-specific scavenging rather than sub-oxic/redox-stratified marine conditions. Collectively, results suggest that the Cambro-Ordovician Taconic seaway along the Laurentian margin may have been completely or near-completely oxygenated at the time of Goldenville horizon deposition.

Streszczenie:
San Francisco lessingia (lessingia germanorum) is an endangered plant species found in dune habitats on the northern San Francisco Peninsula of California, USA. Expanding habitat for this species through dune restoration is a key component of its recovery plan. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) established a project to reintroduce San Francisco lessingia to potential habitat at Fort Funston. We (park staff, contractors, and volunteers) prepared restoration areas through invasive plant removal and installation of protective fencing. Over a three-year period, we collected seeds of San Francisco lessingia from the Daly City population throughout the summer fruiting season. GGNRA nursery staff propagated San Francisco lessingia and other associated dune plants, which were planted and direct seeded at Fort Funston. A monthly volunteer stewardship program was established to support ongoing habitat restoration at Fort Funston. Park staff have initiated annual monitoring of San Francisco lessingia. As of the writing of this report, a small population of San Francisco lessingia has persisted in the primary reintroduction site. Although it is too early to determine if the reintroduction is successful in the long term, the restored dune habitats now support a more diverse dune flora with greatly reduced invasive plant threats.

This rapid review provides insight into the effects of climate change in the Republic of Yemen (Yemen), with particular attention on key sectors of concern, including food security, water, energy and health. Many contextual and background factors are relevant when discussing climate-related impacts and potential priorities in Yemen. Limited studies and tools that provide climate data for Yemen exist, and there is a clear lack of recent and reliable climate data and statistics for past and future climates in Yemen, both at the national and more local levels (downscaled). Country-level information in this report is drawn mostly from information reported in Yemen’s UNFCCC reporting (Republic of Yemen, 2013, 2015) and other sources, which tend to be donor climate change country profiles, such as a USAID (2017) climate change risk profile for Yemen and a Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) (2015) climate fact sheet on Yemen. Many of these are based on projections from older sources. Studies more commonly tend to look at water scarcity or food insecurity issues in relation to Yemen, with climate change mentioned as a factor (one of many) but not the main focus. Regional information is taken from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) report in relation to the Arabian Peninsula (and hence Yemen). Academic sources as well as donor, research institutes and intergovernmental organisations sources are also included. It was outside the scope of this report to review literature in the Arabic language.
