Sharks is the dominant bycatch of purse seine and bottom longline vessels that landed in Kutaraja ocean fishing port, particularly pelagic thresher shark species (Alopias pelagicus). The management of shark fisheries in Aceh water is not well implemented. According to the IUCN red list, the pelagic thresher shark has been classified as an endangered species. The capture and trade of pelagic thresher sharks are regulated by CITES (Appendix II). So that Indonesia has to comply with the procedures of CITES due to it has been adopted through the Decree of Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia Number 61/PERMEN-KP/2018. However, the exploitation and trading of the A. pelagicus continues and is not properly managed. It will threaten the extinction of the pelagic thresher shark population and in terms of a negative image of fisheries management in Indonesia, in particular. Thus, integrated management such as the ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) is needed to solve this problem. This study aims to evaluate the fisheries management status of the pelagic thresher shark based on EAFM indicator of fish resources domain, focusing in the Kutaraja ocean fishing port. This research was conducted by field measurement and interviews with key stakeholders. Data were analyzed using a multi-criteria analysis (MCA) approach through development of a composite index. The results showed that the trend of CPUE tends to fluctuate in the last 5 years. The total length of the sharks was relatively constant. The proportion of juvenile pelagic thresher sharks was 16% male, and 28% (female), and the shark was bycatch (1%) of the purse seine fishery, the fishing ground was getting further away and seemed to go close to the shark habitat. Based on this assessment, one could conclude that shark's fishery resources were in 'good' category, however, some indicators need to improve through better fisheries management actions. Kajian ini merupakan analisa pengembangan strategi perikanan pelagis di Kabupaten Banyuasin. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk (i) menentukan teknologi penangkapan ikan pelagis yang efektif, efisien dan berkelanjutan berdasarkan aspek biologi, teknis, sosial, ekonomi, dan keramahan lingkungan; (ii) menentukan alokasi jumlah unit penangkapan ikan pelagis yang optimum; dan (iii) menentukan strategi pengembangan alat tangkap ikan pelagis. Kajian ini menggunakan metode pemeringkatan (scoring), analisa optimum, analisa finansial usaha serta analisa SWOT. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa rawai hanyut merupakan teknologi penangkapan ikan yang relatif lebih efektif, efisien dan berkelanjutan daripada alat tangkap jaring insang hanyut dan bagan tancap. Alokasi unit penangkapan rawai hanyut yang direkomendasikan sebanyak 51 unit. Hasil analisis kelayakan usaha alat tangkap rawai hanyut di Kabupaten Banyuasin menunjukkan keuntungan Rp. 18.767.666, nilai NPV Rp. 55.855.075, Net B/C sebesar 2,22 dan nilai BEP untuk nilai produksi per tahun Rp. 39.055.258 dan volume produksi per tahun 23.669 kg, nilai ROI 41 %, nilai IRR 48 %. Strategi pengembangan alat tangkap pelagis kecil di Kabupaten Banyuasin yangdisarankan adalah (i) optimalisasi usaha perikanan pelagis; (ii) pengembangan usaha perikanan pelagis di jalur 6 – 10 mil laut; (iii) peningkatan manajemen usaha perikanan pelagis; (iv) peningkatan skala usaha armada penangkapan ikan pelagis; dan (v) pembenahan fasilitas sarana dan prasarana perikanan.Title: Analysis of Strategy for Pelagic Fishery Development in the Banyuasin Regency of South Sumatera Province This research is an analysis strategy for pelagic fishery development in the Banyuasin Regency of South Sumatera Province. The objectives of the research (i) to determine more effective, efficient and sustainable fishing technology for pelagic fish based on biological, technical, social, economic and environment aspects; (ii) to assess optimum allocation for pelagic fish catching unit; and (iii) to determine development strategy of pelagic fisheries. This research used scoring method, optimum allocation, financial and SWOT analysis. This research results indicated that drift long-line fishing technology is more effective, efficient and sustainable than drift gillnet and lift-net. Suggested numbers of optimum allocation of fishing unit consist of 51 unit drift long-line. Output of feasibility analysis of drift long-line fishery indicated profit of IDR 18,767,666, NPV value was IDR 55,855,075, Net B/C was 2.22, the BEP value was IDR 39,055,258 that equal to production 23,669 kg, the ROI and IRR value were 41% and 48. This research suggested following development strategies of pelagic fisheries in Banyuasin Regency namely (i) optimization of drift long-line for pelagic fishery, (ii) focussing development pelagic fish fishery in 6-12 mile zone; (iii) increasing management effort of fisheries business; (4) revitalization of fisheries infrastructures and facilities; and (v) empowering scale of fishing fleet and its technology.

Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province, has the potential for pelagic fish, especially large pelagic fish, namely tuna, skipjack and cob, which are very prospective. The majority of fishermen in Mamuju Regency use fishing rods to catch large pelagic fish. Fishing rod fishermen with a large pelagic catch target are in Mamuju Regency, Simboro District, precisely in Sumare Village but currently it is known that there has been a decrease in the number of fishing rod fishermen in Mamuju Regency since the last 5 years experiencing a decrease in production. This study aims to determine the status of small-scale capture fisheries in a sustainability perspective according to ecological, technological, social and economic dimensions for small-scale fisheries in Mamuju Regency, and recommendations for sustainable capture fisheries. The study was conducted using qualitative methods using Rapfish analysis to determine the sustainability of fishing efforts. The results showed the highest dimensions in fish resources (70.13) and fishing technology (50.06) which means quite sustainable (good) while in the social dimension (38.47) and economic dimension (28.75) in the bad category which means there needs to be special attention in handling.

<p><em>Acoustic </em><em>method can be used to objectively solve various scientific purposes and management, especially in fisheries field. Banda Sea is a part of fisheries management area (FMA) 714 which is dominated by small pelagic fish according to 2010 Fisheries Statistics. The dominant pelagic fish in Banda is scad (Decapterus spp.) which belongs to small pelagic fish and is commonly caught in Banda Sea. The objective of this research is to estimate small pelagic fish density through spatial and temporal distribution as informaion on fisheries resources in Banda Sea, especially the location and depthwhere scad is abundant and foundin the highest density. Acoustic survey was conducted on 3-18 February 2016. Spatially, density measurement showed that the small pelagic fish distribution in Banda Sea spreadedalong the track of data acquisition and had the highest density in theswimming depth of 5</em><em>-20 m. Moreoverhigh density of scad was tended to be found near the slopes of the sea close to the mainland. Temporally,small pelagic fish tended to travel in groups at the day and disperse at night. Jenis ikan pelagis yang dominan di perairan Laut Banda adalah ikan layang (<em>Decapterus </em>spp.) yang termasuk kedalamkelompok ikan pelagis kecil dan banyak dimanfaatkan di Laut Banda. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengestimasi densitas ikan pelagis kecil secara spastial dan temporal sebagai informasi mengenai sumber daya perikanan di Laut Banda terutama lokasi dan kedalaman ikan pelagis kecil yang banyak ditemukan. Survei akustikdilaksanakan pada tanggal 3-18 Februari 2016 di Laut Banda.Perhitungan densitas secara spasial densitas ikan pelagis kecil menunjukkan hasil sebaran ikan pelagis kecil di perairan Laut Banda menyebar sesuai lintasan survei dan memiliki ukuran densitas ikan tertinggi berada di kedalaman renang 5-20 meter dengan densitas ikan cenderung tinggi berada di lereng laut yang dekat dengan daratan utama. Secara temporal, tingkah laku ikan pelagis pada siang hari cenderung membentuk kelompok, sedangkan pada malam hari cenderung menyebar. Climate-related effects occur across all regions in Tanzania, affecting primary sectors such as agriculture and fishing. This study investigated the impacts of climatic change on small pelagic catches in fishers in Kilindoni, Kipumbwi and Kilwa Kivinje villages along the Tanzanian coast. We studied how changes in rainfall, sea surface temperature, wind speed and chlorophyll a affect small pelagic fisheries using primary and secondary data. Qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. Primary data collection involved questionnaires, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Secondary data was obtained from Tanzania Meteorological Agency and remote sensing from Modi's sensor. Results showed an increase in sea surface temperature (tau = 0.0151, 0.0121, 0.0238 for Kilindoni, Kilwa Kivinje and Kipumbwi, respectively) and unpredictable changes in rainfall patterns which affected small pelagic fisheries. The average rainfall was 284.6, 97.5 and 56.4 mm in Kilindoni, Kilwa Kivinje and Kipumbwi, respectively. In recent years, rain has been unreliable compared to the past 20 years. Unpredictable rainfall, increased sea surface temperature, wind speed and chlorophyll a had negatively impacted the small pelagic fishery. There was a strong relationship between the decline of small pelagic catches and climatic variables. Nelayan penangkap ikan yang efektif membutuhkan informasi sumberdaya ikan dan pola penyebarannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pola sebaran sumber daya ikan yang dikaitkan dengan kondisi oseanografi WPP-NRI 715. Analisis dilakukan berdasarkan kombinasi metode hidroakustik dan profiling CTD pada stasiun oseanografi yang dirancang secara parallel pada jarak tertentu di lintasan tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, estimasi ukuran ikan pelagis yang terdeteksi didominasi oleh ukuran kecil. Ikan pelagis kecil yang terdeteksi didominasi ukuran ikan antara 12-14 cm dan ikan pelagis besar ukuran ikan 28-31 cm. Kepadatan ikan pelagis kecil cenderung menurun dengan rerata faktor 0,4 dengan bertambahnya kedalaman, sebaliknya meningkat dengan rerata faktor 1,7 untuk ikan pelagis besar. Pada saat observasi, dikawasan perairan Laut Maluku bagian timur diindikasikan terjadinya upwelling ditandai dengan suhu rendah, salinitas tinggi, dan klorofil tinggi. Ikan pelagis besar lebih banyak ditemukan pada lokasi yang memiliki karakteristik suhu dan DO yang relatif lebih tinggi sedangkan salinitas lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan lapisan air yang didominasi ikan pelagis kecil. Informasi pola sebaran ikan pelagis ini diharapkan dapat dijadikan rujukan bagi pelaku perikanan tangkap dan masukan untuk bahan perumusan kebijakan pengelolaan perikanan tangkap yang berkelanjutan.Effective commercial fishers need information on fish resources and their distribution pattern. This study aims to determine distribution of fish resources in Indonesian FMA 715 through tracking hydroacoustic method and CTD profiling at stations within regular distances. The results showed that the estimated size of pelagic fish was dominated by small size fish groups. Small pelagic fish were detected at the size ranged between 12-14 cm and large pelagic fish was dominated by the size of 28-31cm. The density of small pelagic fish decreases with depth with average factor of 0.4, while the large pelagic fish with average factor of 1.7. An indicated upwelling incidence was likely occurred in the eastern part of Mollucas sea region, which were characterized by the low temperature, high salinity and high chlorophyll concentrations. Large pelagic fish were more occasionally found in locations with relatively higher temperature, DO characteristics and lower salinity compared with small pelagic fish. Information on the distribution pattern of pelagic fish is expected to be used as a reference for capture fishermen and inputs in formulating the policy the sustainable fisheries management.

Rapfish is used as an indicator to assess pelagic fisheries' sustainability in Aceh's northern waters. This study aims to determine the sustainability of pelagic fishing and the factors that mostly influence the sustainability of pelagic fisheries. Surveys and interviews with questionnaires were conducted in collecting data, then analyzed by RAPFISH analysis with five dimensions. The results show that the ecological and economic dimensions are in a quite sustainable category, the social dimension is in a less sustainable category, the technological dimension is in the very sustainable category and the institutional dimension is in the less sustainable category. In addition, there are several indicators that most influence the sustainability of pelagic fisheries with purse seine on the ecological dimensions; (1) the location of fishing grounds; (2) the Fishing season. The economic dimension is influenced by (1) assistance from the government; (2) dependence on subsidies. Meanwhile, the social dimension is influenced by (1) The development of the number of fishermen; (2) The level of conflict. Lastly, the technological dimensions which influenced by (1) fishing vessel size; (2) Mechanical power, and institutional dimensions (1) The role of customary leadership, and (2) Fishermen's involvement in the process of preparing management regulations

Pengelolaan perikanan tangkap yang lestari membutuhkan informasi potensi dan pola penyebaran sumber daya ikan yang dimanfaatkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui distribusi dan potensi sumber daya ikan pelagis di WPP NRI 573 (perairan Samudera Hindia) dengan metode akustik. Hasil penelitian menunjukan, penyebaran densitas cukup tinggi untuk ikan pelagis ditemukan di perairan selatan Pangandaran hingga wilayah Jogjakarta. Sumber daya ikan pelagis kecil yang terdeteksi didominasi oleh ukuran ikan dengan kisaran panjang antara 25-28 cm dan ikan pelagis besar di dominasi oleh ukuran ikan 28-31 cm. Nilai rata-rata kepadatan stok untuk ikan pelagis kecil 0,041 ton/km2 dan ikan pelagis besar sebesar 0,14 ton/ km2. Potensi lestari ikan pelagis kecil sebesar 292.092 ton/tahun dan ikan pelagis besar sebesar 505.941 ton/tahun. Nilai tersebut dapat dijadikan dasar dalam upaya pengelolaan dan pemanfaatan perikanan pelagis.The sustainable management is needed information on the stock and distribution pattern of fish.This study aims to determine distribution and potential of fish resources especially for pelagic species in FMA 573 (Indian Ocean) by using acoustic method. Result of research indicated that, high density for pelagic fish found in south Pangandaran to Jogjakarta. The results obtained also that, the detected small pelagic fish were dominated by the fish size ranged between 25-28 cm and large pelagic fish was dominated by fish size of 28-31cm.The average of the stock density for small pelagic fish was 0,041 ton/km2 and large pelagic fish of 0.14 ton/km2.The sustainable potential of the small pelagic fish amounted to 292.092 ton/year and the large pelagic fish amounted to 505.941 ton/year. These values can be used as the basic management and utilization of pelagic fisheries in the waters region.

The regency of southeast Maluku has a variety of promising fisheries and marine potency to be managed. Unfortunately, it has not been used properly. The fishing production volume of small pelagic in every season using gill net fishing gear has not been able to increase the income of fishermen in Southeast Maluku regency. The analytical methods used were the External Factor Evaluation (EFE), Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE), Internal-External (IE) and Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats (SWOT) analytical matrix. These were used to develop the strategy of small Pelagic with gill net fishing gear. Abstract Analysis of the sustainability of pelagic fisheries using purse seine at the Ujong Serangga fishing port is an analysis to determine the level of fisheries sustainability by maintaining a balance between the level of exploitation and the level of utilization of fish resources. The purpose of this study was to determine the sustainability of pelagic fisheries and the most influential factors on the sustainability of pelagic fisheries. This study applied descriptive method with a survey technique. The analysis used is RAPFISH (Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries). The results of the RAPFISH analysis show that the ecological dimension is at a moderate level of sustainability, the economic dimension is at a less sustainable level, the social dimension is at a sustainable level, while the technological dimension is at a moderately sustainable level. Fishing catch that affect the sustainability of pelagic fisheries with purse seine are the ecological dimension by-catch. The economic dimension, assistance from the government with a score of 18.27 and attributes of working capital sources. The social dimension, fisherman’s education and the technological dimension, pre-sale management.

Most of the scientific knowledge on the pelagic fish (the clupeids Stolothrissa tanganicae and Limnothrissa miodon and the centropomid Lates stappersii) of Lake Tanganyika is from research carried out in localised areas. This makes it difficult to extend the results to the whole lake. Consequently, there is the need to study the pelagic fish resources on a lake-wide basis using the same data collection procedures. Within the framework of an international fishery research project, data from the commercial fisheries targeting the pelagic fish stocks were simultaneously collected at various sampling sites in the riparian countries. Fishery-independent data were also obtained from lake-wide research surveys. The life histories of the three fish species appear to be similar throughout the lake. However, fish distribution across the lake is very uneven. The clupeid S. tanganicae mostly occur in the northern half of the lake and is much reduced in southern areas. This appears to be a recent contraction of the distribution range of this species. Limnothrissa miodon is more evenly distributed than S. tanganicae. The two species have a different inshore-offshore, size-related distribution across the lake. Nursery grounds of the first are close to the shore while those of S. tanganicae are in open, pelagic waters. With increase in size, S. tanganicae tend to move inshore while large L. miodon display the opposite movement. Lates stappersii stock, although relatively common, tends to be at higher concentration in the deep, steep central and southern basins. The feeding ecology of L. stappersii varies depending on the area and prey availability, but is mainly based on S. tanganicae and pelagic shrimps. Local occurrence of S. tanganicae is associated with that of copepod prey. The fish stocks experience different exploitation rates across the lake. While the fishing pressure is not excessive in the most of the lake areas, in others local overfishing is taking place. The biological characteristics of the pelagic fish species are discussed for the management of the lake fisheries. Fisheries management options are formulated on the basis of the assessment of the current exploitation levels.

Climate change and fisheries have affected marine environments worldwide leading to impacts on ecosystem structure and functioning. However there is clear evidence of spatial variability in the response of these impacts both within and among marine ecosystems. Although several studies have tried to explain the effect of these impacts on marine food webs, it is unclear how they interact, and how they may affect marine ecosystems remains an important unanswered question. This suggests the urgent need for multiple-trophic level and ecosystem-based management approaches to account for both fisheries and climate change impacts at ocean basins across the globe. Marine apex predators, such as seabirds, are vulnerable to the effects of both climate and fishing impacts, and can be used as reliable and sensitive bio-indicators of the status of the marine ecosystem. The Celtic Sea ecosystem is a productive shelf region in the Northeast Atlantic. It is characterized by high fish and invertebrate biodiversity. In addition, internationally important numbers of seabirds, such as Northern gannet Morus bassanus (L.), Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus (B.), Common guillemot Uria aalge (P.) and Black-legged kittiwake Rissa tridactyla (L.), breed along the Celtic Sea coasts. In recent years, fisheries from across Europe have intensively exploited the Celtic Sea, leading to changes in stock structure. Moreover, the increase in annual average Sea Surface Temperature by 0.67 oC over the past two decades has altered the composition of plankton communities. These impacts, independently and in tandem, are likely to have had dramatic effects upon the Celtic Sea food web emphasizing the need to enhance our understanding of this important marine ecosystem. In this thesis the effects of climate change and fisheries on the Celtic Sea pelagic food web are evaluated, in particular focussing on the response of seabird populations. This is in part because of recent declines in the breeding success of many seabird colonies in the northeast Atlantic, particularly around the North Sea. Long-term data across four trophic levels (phytoplankton, zooplankton, mid-trophic level fish and seabirds) and different modelling approaches are used to determine factors influencing seabird productivity at different geographical scales. First, I review the direct and indirect effects of climate change and fisheries upon marine ecosystems, as well as their impacts upon marine birds. Second, I use data collected during 1986-2007 from a single seabird colony, across four trophic levels, to investigate long-term direct and indirect climate effects. The results suggest only a weak climate signal in the Celtic Sea, and this is only evident between mid-trophic level fish and certain species of seabird. Third, a similar multi-trophic level approach across three nearby regions in the southwest UK (Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, and English Channel) reveal no evidence of a bottom-up signal during the period 1991-2007. These findings are in contrast with the nearby North Sea region, where a strong bottom-up effect was found to affect seabird populations, highlighting the importance of regional-based studies across multiple trophic levels. Finally, to provide a more complete picture of the Celtic Sea, and how it might respond to changes in fisheries management and climatic variation, I use the complex tropho-dynamic ecosystem model Ecopath with Ecosim. The main focus is on how seabird biomass changes in response to the application of different fisheries regimes likely to be implemented under forthcoming reforms to the Common Fisheries Policy (e.g. the application of quotas and discard bans), as well as future climate change scenarios, in order to provide guideline support for resource management and seabird conservation in the Celtic Sea. The results suggest that some seabird guilds (gulls and some other scavengers) may be negatively affected by a reduction in discards, while other species (offshore divers) will benefit from a decrease in the fishing of pelagic fish species. Climate change is likely to have a negative impact across all trophic levels with a strong negative impact upon seabird populations. Therefore seabirds are likely to show species-specific responses to both climate variation (bottom-up effect) and changes in fishing practices, in particular our findings suggest that for some species climate may outweigh the fisheries impacts even when fisheries pressure is reduced by 50%. In summary, this study suggests that despite the generally negative impact of climate described for some regions in the Northeast Atlantic, the Celtic Sea ecosystem seems to be more resilient. However, both climate and fisheries and the interactions between these factors should be taken into account in the formulation of future management plans for the Celtic Sea ecosystem. The use of multiple-trophic level and ecosystem-based approaches over multiple spatial and temporal scales has helped to elucidate possible trophic mechanisms that are the response to future fishing and climate impacts in the Celtic Sea. The results of this study could have implications for both management plans and conservation policy.

This study analyses the willingness of consumers to pay an extra price for shark-free eco-label products of fresh small pelagics compared to the ordinary ones. The data collected for this study derives from a contingent valuation survey conducted among 200 consumers, in Ravenna and Pavullo nel Frignano, in a fish market and a supermarket each. There have been administrated further questionnaires to one wholesaler and to the sales manager of the two fishmongers and two supermarkets per town. Open-ended questions of the consumers’ questionnaires have been analysed through cross section linear regressions with ordinary least squares (OLS), using software Gretl, while qualitative analyses on the close-ended have been done using Excel. Freshness, origin and method of production are the aspects considered mostly by the consumers. Among all the interviewed, general knowledge of labels of is scarce. Maximum prices proposed by the consumers indicate that future shark-free eco-label of small pelagic could be sold with a price ranging from 7 to 10 €. The regression shows that the extent of the additional price that the consumer is willing to pay is related to the degree of information of the BIO label. Moreover, consumers could be interested in a shark-free eco-label. All vendors currently have no interest in promoting eco-labels, as joining the certification is considered a cost, as well as keeping the certified lines separate from the non-certified ones without mixing the products. None will assume the risk of joining the certification first, preferring to let others pave the way. An economic estimation of the amount of money that fishers gain from the by-catch has been calculated using pelagic trawling shark by-catch data provided by the Experimental Centre for Habitat Conservation (CESTHA) and fish prices from ISMEA and NISEA dataset. The economic loss due to the release of sharks is lower compared to how much the vessels could gain by joining the shark-free eco-label.

The heterogeneity provided by structured habitats is important in supporting diverse and dense fish communities. The biogenic reefs created by the native Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica, were once the dominant structural habitat in Chesapeake Bay, and have since declined to less than 1% of historic estimates. Conflicting results on the effects of oyster reef restoration on pelagic fish assemblages make further investigation necessary. Incorporating multiple sampling strategies may help elucidate oyster reef habitat influence on fish assemblages. This study used multi-panel gillnets, hydroacoustic technology, and day-night sampling to describe pelagic fish assemblages on and off oyster reef habitat in the lower Piankatank River, VA. Data from oyster reef habitat, adjacent sandy-mud bottom habitat, and unstructured sandy habitat outside of a reef restoration area compared fish diversity, species composition, and density among habitat types. A multivariate analysis using day of the year, day or night, and habitat type as model terms found temporal factors explained variation in fish distribution more than habitat. Fish diversity varied significantly with day or night and habitat type. Diversity and density were significantly higher at night, demonstrating the necessity of nocturnal sampling in fish assemblage research. Results from this study conclude that fish assemblages were not significantly more diverse or denser on reef than non-reef habitat. We suggest that future work should concentrate on studying areas where oyster reef habitat comprises a larger proportion of the study area.

Only a miniscule fraction of the world’s largest volume of living space, the ocean’s mid-water biome, has ever been sampled. As part of the International Census of Marine Life field project Mid-Atlantic Ridge Ecosystems (MAR-ECO), a discrete-depth trawling survey was conducted in 2009 aboard the NOAA ship Henry B. Bigelow to examine the pelagic faunal assemblage structure and distribution over the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ) of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is the first MAR-ECO project aimed specifically at describing diel vertical migration as a distributional phenomenon. Discrete-depth sampling from 0-3000 m was conducted during both day and night in similar locations using a Norwegian “Krill” trawl with five codends that were opened and closed via a pre-programmed timer. Seventy-five species of fish were collected, with a maximum diversity and biomass observed between depths of 700-1900 m. An incremental gradient in sea surface temperature and underlying watermasses, from northwest of the CGFZ zone to the southeast, was mirrored by a similar gradient in ichthyofaunal diversity. Using multivariate analyses, eight deep-pelagic fish assemblages were identified, with depth as the overwhelming discriminatory variable. Strong diel vertical migration (DVM) of the mesopelagic fauna was a prevalent feature of the study area, though the numerically dominant fish, Cyclothone microdon (Gonostomatidae), exhibited a broad (0-3000 m) vertical distribution and did not appear to migrate on a diel basis. In all, 3 patterns of vertical distribution were observed in the study area: a) DVM of mesopelagic, and possibly bathypelagic, taxa; b) broad vertical distribution spanning meso- and bathypelagic depths; and c) discrete vertical distribution patterns. Overall species composition and rank order of abundance of fish species agreed with two previous expeditions to the CGFZ (1982-83 and 2004), suggesting some stability in the ichthyofaunal composition of the study area, at least in the summer. Frequent captures of putative bathypelagic fishes, shrimps, and squid in the epipelagic zone (0-200 m) were confirmed. The results of this expedition reveal distributional patterns unlike those previously reported for open ocean ecosystems, with the implication of increased transfer efficiency of surface production to great depths in the mid-North Atlantic.

The pelagic stingray, Pteroplatytrygon violacea, is a bycatch species in the global pelagic longline fishery. However, little research has been conducted on its basic biology, including prey composition, trophic positioning, and habitat utilization. Descriptions of the habitat utilization have largely been through indirect analyses of catch rates in commercial fisheries, which also provided no information on actual behaviors. The first chapter of this thesis will describe the habitat utilization and behavior of four individual pelagic stingrays using electronic tagging technology. Prior diet descriptions were hampered, in part, by low sample sizes and accordingly provided little information on the ecological interactions of these animals. Similarly, the second chapter of this thesis will therefore provide a new diet description for the pelagic stingray using a combined analysis of traditional stomach contents with stable isotope values, thereby addressing both ingestion and assimilation. A more robust study of the trophic dynamics of the pelagic stingray, in conjunction with the description of its habitat utilization, will provide a better understanding of its role within the pelagic ecosystem. Ultimately, the goal is to obtain knowledge of the less economic species with good science so when management approaches shift from species-specific to ecosystem based, the transition will already have known information to change efficiently.

The feeding behavior of fishes is a topic that has piqued the interests of many researchers given the dynamic and ancestral nature of aquatic prey-capture. This study examines aquatic feeding in terms of the suction and ram components of feeding in smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, and how they modulate their kinematic behavior when attacking pelagic and benthic prey. Relative to other Micropterus genera, the reduced gape in smallmouth bass suggests they may create considerable suction pressure – stronger subambient pressure pulled through a smaller opening creates greater velocity. Suction feeding is useful when feeding on benthic prey, such as crayfish. Ram feeding is utilized when capturing pelagic prey, such as goldfish, because prey swimming in the water column can be overtaken with body speed. Prey-capture experiments using high-speed cinematography and pressure transducers were conducted to determine if smallmouth bass modulate their feeding performance between pelagic and benthic prey items. The AL561 cruise was conducted in the framework of the project APOC (“Anthropogenic impacts on Particulate Organic Carbon cycling in the North Sea”). This collaborative project between GEOMAR, AWI, HEREON, UHH, and BUND is to understand how particulate organic carbon (POC) cycling contributes to carbon sequestration in the North Sea and how this ecosystem service is compromised and interlinked with global change and a range of human pressures include fisheries (pelagic fisheries, bottom trawling), resource extraction (sand mining), sediment management (dredging and disposal of dredged sediments) and eutrophication. The main aim of the sampling activity during AL561 cruise was to recover undisturbed sediment from high accumulation sites in the Skagerrak/Kattegat and to subsample sediment/porewater at high resolution in order to investigate sedimentation transport processes, origin of sediment/POC and mineralization processes over the last 100- 200 years. Moreover, the actual processes of sedimentation and POC degradation in the water column and benthic layer will be addressed by sampling with CTD and Lander devices. In total 9 hydroacoustic surveys (59 profiles), 4 Gravity Corer, 7 Multicorer, 3 Lander and 4 CTD stations were successfully conducted during the AL561 cruise. - (Alkor-Berichte ; AL561)

The Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, is a pelagic fish found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of all oceans. Tripletails are often associated with floating debris and make frequent incursions in bays and estuaries where they are targeted by recreational fishermen. In Mississippi waters the species is typically present during the late spring and summer season that also correspond to the period of sexual maturation and spawning (Brown-Peterson and Franks 2001). Tripletail is appreciated as a gamefish but is also prized for its flesh of superior quality. The fast growth rate of juveniles in captivity documented by Franks et al. (2001) and the excellent quality of Tripletail flesh both contribute to the potential of this species for marine aquaculture. In addition, the production of cultured juveniles would be precious to develop a better understanding of the biology, early life history and habitat use of Tripletail larvae and juveniles, a topic largely undocumented to date, through experimental releases and controlled studies. The culture of tripletail thus supports the Tidelands Trust Fund Program through improved conservation of natural resources, potential enhancement of fisheries productivity and potential development of a new economic activity on the Gulf coast producing tripletail via aquaculture. The Objective of this project was to initiate development of methods and techniques needed to spawn captive held tripletail broodfish and raise their offspring to evaluate their growth and development in captivity. In this report we will present the results of studies aiming to develop methods and protocols for captive spawning of tripletail and the first data obtained on the early development of tripletail larvae. A major issue that was encountered with tripletail broodstock development during the project lied in the difficulties associated with identifying the sex of adults caught in the wild and candidates for being incorporated in mating sets for spawning. This issue was addressed during the course of the project by examining the potential of a non-lethal method of hormonal sexing. The results of these preliminary investigations are presented in the third part of this report. All protocols used in the project were determined with the guidance of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM IACUC protocol number 10100108).
