Ou ainda mais: o “banqueiro” de Pessoa pode ter sido a síntese de duas personagens homónimas, dois Plató Peig, um financeiro, o outro anarquista, e primos entre si. De qualquer forma, a figura de Plató Peig estabeleceria a relação desta narrativa puramente abstrata, de “raciocínio”, com o ambiente lisboeta em que Pessoa se desenvolveu.

Recent studies indicate that partisan electoral interventions, a situation where a foreign power tries to determine the election results in another country, can have significant effects on the election results in the targeted country as well as other important influences. Nevertheless, research on this topic has been hindered by a lack of systematic data of electoral interventions. In this article, I introduce the Partisan Electoral Intervention by the Great Powers dataset (PEIG), which provides data on all such interventions by the US and the USSR/Russia between 1946 and 2000. After describing the dataset construction process, I note some interesting patterns in the data, a few of which stand in contrast to claims made about electoral interventions in the public sphere and give an example of PEIG’s utility. I then describe some applications of PEIG for research on electoral interventions in particular and for peace research in general.

Destinos turísticos remetem a diversas representações e imagens em seus visitantes, sendo que, as diferentes experiências que cada visitante terá serão determinantes para o estabelecimento das percepções sobre os atrativos visitados. A presente pesquisa de cunho descritivo com abordagem mista e fundamentada na teoria das representações sociais objetivou apreender as representações de visitantes sobre alguns dos principais atrativos da região do Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande (PEIG), localizado no litoral do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. A pesquisa analisou 4885 avaliações on-line sobre as experiências de visitantes do PEIG disponibilizadas no site TripAdvisor entre os anos de 2015 e 2020, com o auxílio da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente através do software IRaMuTeQ. Os resultados revelam que o olhar do visitante, de modo geral, é um olhar positivo, revelando a centralidade da oferta de serviços, formas de acesso e dos elementos que compõem o cenário natural de cada atrativo, destacando-se elementos únicos destes. Os resultados demonstram que neste destino de natureza, as experiências dos turistas são centradas num posicionamento contemplativo, demonstrando um envolvimento cognitivo marginal com o ambiente natural.

Alouatta guariba clamitans Cabrera, 1940 is an endemic species of the Atlantic Forest that occurs from south Bahia, Brazil, extending south to the province of Misiones, Argentina. In Rio de Janeiro state, the species was classified as threatened, indicating that attention is needed for the conservation of this taxon. Additionally, an outbreak of yellow fever spread throughout the southeastern states of Brazil from January 2017 until March 2018 seriously threatening Rio de Janeiro populations of the species. Herein, we aimed to provide the first estimates of A. g. clamitans encounter rate, density, and population size in the Ilha Grande State Park (PEIG), which is part of the Atlantic Forest biome of Brazil. Data were collected in two different periods, the first between December 2003 and May 2005, and the second from August 2009 to May 2010, and information on encounter rates and behavior was collected to better understand aspects of species' ecology. The estimated encounter rate in the first period through the distance sampling method was 0.04 ± 0.01 individuals per kilometer. Nine groups were recorded in the second period of the study, with 47 individuals along 3 km. Our estimates of encounter rate, density and population size were low and reinforces the need to initiate species monitoring and assess the impact that yellow fever outbreaks may have on PEIG populations. The results presented here can be a starting point to support future strategic actions for the species, to measure impacts and to the management of the species, and for a conservation program.

Pseudomurein endoisopeptidases cause lysis of the cell walls of methanogens by cleaving the isopeptide bond Ala-ε-Lys in the peptide chain of pseudomurein. PeiW and PeiP are two thermostable pseudomurein endoisopeptidases encoded by phage ΨM100 ofMethanothermobacter wolfeiand phages ΨM1 and ΨM2 ofMethanothermobacter marburgensis, respectively. A continuous assay using synthetic peptide substrates was developed and used in the biochemical characterisation of recombinant PeiW and PeiP. The advantages of these synthetic peptide substrates over natural substrates are sensitivity, high purity, and characterisation and the fact that they are more easily obtained than natural substrates. In the presence of a reducing agent, purified PeiW and PeiP each showed similar activity under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Both enzymes required a divalent metal for activity and showed greater thermostability in the presence of Ca2+. PeiW and PeiP involve a cysteine residue in catalysis and have a monomeric native conformation. The kinetic parameters,KMandkcat, were determined, and theε-isopeptide bond between alanine and lysine was confirmed as the bond lysed by these enzymes in pseudomurein. The new assay may have wider applications for the general study of peptidases and the identification of specific methanogens susceptible to lysis by specific pseudomurein endoisopeptidases.

Polyethylene/montmorillonite (PE/MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization. The morphology of MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst and PE/MMT nanocomposites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It can be seen that MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst remained the original MMT sheet structures and many holes were found in MMT and the morphology of PE/MMT nanocomposites is part of the sheet in the form of existence, as most of the petal structure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were carried out to characterize all the samples. XRD results reveal that the original basal reflection peak of PEI1 and PEI2 disappears completely and that of PEI3 become very weak. MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst was finely dispersed in the PE matrix. Instead of being individually dispersed, most layers were found in thin stacks comprising several swollen layers.

To take advantages of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for cellular delivery of chemotherapeutic agents (e.g. doxorubicin) in order to decrease doxorubicin toxicity and increase its efficacy, we aimed to develop a novel approach to aqueous disperse and stabilize SWNTs through consequent steps of oxidation (oxSWNT) and PEG-PEI complexation (PEG-PEI-SWNT). Doxorubicin was loaded onto the modified SWNTs in alkalione pH with more considerable capacity ( 900 %) than those previously reported, due to complex formation with PEI proved by UV-visible spectroscopy. The loaded carrier was stable in physiologic simulated medium. Drug release was prolonged and dilution independent, but exhibited pH-dependent burst release that makes SWNTs as suitable in vivo drug carriers in acidic tumor milieu. At the AASS laboratory located in “Teknikhuset” at ORU there are research projects that has the goal to create an intelligent home. This home should be used in care of elders and other people that are in need of care. It has already a lot of technology embedded in the different parts of the apartment, i.e. a robot arm in the fridge. 

To know when these modules should be activated for use or not, the location of the user can be used. An example would be that the fridge door shouldn't open when the user accidentally tells it to when he or she is in the bathroom, but it should when he or she stands in front of the fridge. Then how to know where the person are located?

This is what the idea of this thesis is, to create a location tool to be used in the care of elders. It will be embedded in the intelligent environment in the apartment and in later projects together with other systems monitor the patient.

What hardware to use and how to connect them together are a major task in this thesis. And also writing the application to be able to embed the tool in the environment system. How did the result turn out, and what can future development can be done.


Vid AASS laboratoriet som är beläget i Teknikhuset vid Örebro Universitet finns det forskningsprojekt med mål att skapa ett intelligent hem. Detta hem ska användas inom omsorgen för gamla och andra personer som är i behov av vård. Det har redan idag mycket teknologi inbyggt i diverse saker, exempelvis en robotarm i kylen.

För att veta när dessa moduler ska arbeta eller inte så är positionen på användaren viktig. Det vore inte så bra om kylskåpsdörren öppnades av ett misstag när användaren befinner sig på toaletten. Men dörren ska öppna sig när användaren står framför kylen. Men hur vet man då vart användaren är?

Idéen med detta examensarbete är att skapa en sådan lösning som kan hålla kolla på positionen av en person. Lösningen ska sedan vara en del av det intelligenta system som i framtida projekt skall användas för att övervaka personen.

Vilken hårdvara och hur den skall kopplas samman är en stor del av detta arbete, och även hur  applikationen som skall integrera hårdvarulösningen i det intelligenta systemet utvecklades. Hur ser resultatet ut och vad finns det för möjligheter att vidareutveckla detta resultat i framtiden.

L'osteoartrite (OA) è una patologia infiammatorio/degenerativa ossea per la quale non sono disponibili terapie causali efficaci ma solo approcci palliativi per la riduzione del dolore cronico. E’ quindi giustificato un investimento per individuare nuove strategie di trattamento. In quest’ottica, lo scopo di questa tesi è stato quello di indagare l’efficacia di polyplexi a base di chitosano o di PEI-g-PEG in un modello cellulare 3D in vitro basato su un hydrogel di Gellan Gum Metacrilato (GGMA) con a bordo condrociti in condizioni simulate di OA. Inizialmente sono state studiate la dimensione e il potenziale-Z di un pool di formulazioni di poliplexi. Quindi se ne è valutata la citocompatibilità utilizzando cellule staminali mesenchimali immortalizzate Y201. Infine, una miscela di GGMA, cellule e polyplexi è stata utilizzata per la stampa 3D di campioni che sono stati coltivati fino a 14 giorni. La condizione OA è stata simulata trattando le cellule con una miscela di citochine implicate nello sviluppo della malattia. Tutte le formulazioni a base di chitosano e due basate su PEI-g-PEG si sono dimostrate citocompatibili e sono hanno veicolato i miRNA nelle cellule (come mostrato dai risultati di analisi in fluorescenza). I risultati delle colorazioni H&E e AlcianBlue hanno confermato che il terreno condizionato ha ben ricreato le condizioni di OA. I polyplexi a base di chitosano e PEI-g-PEG hanno controbilanciato gli effetti delle citochine. Risultati incoraggianti, anche se da approfondire ulteriormente, provengono anche dall’analisi di espressione (RT-PCR) di cinque geni specifici della cartilagine. Concludendo, questo modello ha ben riprodotto le condizioni di OA in vitro; il chitosano ha mostrato di essere un adeguato veicolo per un trattamento a base di miRNA; il PEI-g-PEG si propone come un'alternativa più economica e ragionevolmente affidabile, sebbene il rischio di citotossicità alle concentrazioni più elevate richieda una più esteva validazione sperimentale.

At the nanoscopic level, light interacts with matter in interesting ways. Plasmonics is the study of one such interaction where light interacts with electrons at the surface of particles. The oscillation of the electrons when light interacts with them are called Plasmons and have many properties, one of which can cause nanoparticles to become "cloaked" or more precisely: transparent. The application of "cloaking" extends to sensors, solar cells and numerous other uses. We have investigated how changing the geometry of nanoparticles alters "cloaking" behaviour and have found that thicker particles in close proximity can be transparent in the visual region.

This thesis describes the work to make a portable ubiquitous device into a component in a networked robotic environment. The device can both control and be controlled in a robotic network as well as used to survey a robotic network. This is done by building upon existing software for making networked robotic components and use it on devices with the Android operating system. The software is the PEIS-kernel (Physically Embedded Intelligent System) middleware. The middleware makes it possible to build robotic components called PEIScomponents that can communicate, work together and share their resources and capabilities. The result of this work is three-fold, first a way to make devices with the Android operating system into PEIS-devices so that they can be used to control or be controlled as well as survey a PEIS-network.With this the Android device functionality can be used to extend the capabilities of an entire PEIS-network. Secondly, devices with Android get access to a simple and powerful way to exchange information with any device that is a PEIS-device. The third contribution is the capability to make humans a much more integral part of a PEIS-network as devices with Android are in general easy to use and familiar to humans. These devices will serve as a very good human - PEIS-network interaction tool.

This is part 2 of a two part paper that outlines the 101 essential elements that need to be in place, and functioning well, to effectively and efficiently, preserve and protect the reliability and integrity of pressure equipment (vessels, exchangers, furnaces, boilers, piping, tanks, relief systems) in the refining and petrochemical industry. Part 1 of this paper was published in the proceedings of the 2000 ASME PVP Conference. Each of the two parts outline half of the 101 essential elements of pressure equipment integrity management (PEIM). This paper is not just about minimum compliance with rules, regulations or standards; rather it is about what needs to be accomplished to build and maintain a program of operational excellence in pressure equipment integrity that will permit owner-users to make maximum use of their physical assets to generate income. Compliance is not the key to success in pressure equipment integrity management (PEIM); operational excellence is. Each of the 101 work processes outlined in this two part paper, is explained concisely to the extent necessary, so that owner-users will know what needs to be done to maintain and improve their PEIM program. This paper does not prescribe how each of these 101 key elements is to be accomplished, as that description would result in a book rather than a paper. This paper simply outlines all the fundamentals that are necessary to avoid losses, avoid safety incidents, and maintain reliability of pressure equipment. It pulls together a complete overview of the entire spectrum of programs, procedures, and preventative measures needed to achieve first quartile performance in maintaining pressure equipment integrity (PEI).

Abstract This work investigated the influence of raster angle and infill percentage on selected mechanical properties of two commonly used 3D Printed materials: Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) at room temperature. Their Elastic Modulus, Yield Strength, and Toughness were experimentally determined and compared for infill densities of 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, and raster angles of 0/90, 45/45, and 30/60. The materials were printed using Fused Deposition Modeling per ASTM D638-22 standards, with a layer thickness of 0.3 mm, an initial layer speed of 35 mm/s, and an infill speed of 50 mm/s. The initial layer speed and infill speeds were 35 mm/s and 50 mm/s, respectively. The team concluded that PETG material, on average, outperformed HIPS when looking at Young’s Modulus of the printed samples. There are few instances where HIPS has a higher Young’s Modulus, i.e., 45-45 at infill 100%, 45-45 at infill 50%, and 30-60 at infill 100%. The PETG samples often exceeded the toughness of HIPS as well. As seen in the tables, there are a few cases in which HIPS has much higher toughness than the same raster and infill percentage as PETG. For instance, HIPS samples at 0-90 angles and infill percentages of 50% and 75%. Overall, the team concluded that PETG, on average, outperforms HIPS in both Young’s Modulus and toughness during the testing. PETG would be suitable for most situations, whereas HIPS would fail more often if substituted for PETG.

The pattern-reversal electroretinogram (PERG) is a bio­electrical signal which can be recorded from the cornea of the human eye when a contrast-reversing (i.e. phase-alternating) pattern is viewed. Although the retinal generators of this biopotential have not been precisely localized (1,2) considerable evidence suggests that the PERG is correlated with neural activity occurring in the proximal retina (3-5). PERG abnormalities often are associated with visual disorders that affect the proximal retina and optic nerve (6,7).

Trees and shrubs are potentially important sources of food for livestock in many parts of the world, but their use is limited by tannins. Tannins reduce food intake by decreasing digestibility or by causing illness. Supplementing cattle, sheep, and goats with polyethylene glycol (PEG), which has a high affinity for binding tannins and thus attenuating their aversive effects, increases intake of high-tannin foods and improves weight gains and wool growth. The objectives of this proposal were: Objective 1: To further delineate the conditions under which PEG affects intake of high-tannin foods. Objective 2: To ascertain if animals self-regulate intake of PEG in accord with the tannin content of their diet under pen, paddock, and field conditions. Objective 3: To determine how nutritional status and PEG supplementation affect preference for foods varying in nutrients and tannins. Objective 4: To assess the effects of PEG on food selection, intake, and livestock performance in different production systems. The results from this research show that supplementing livestock with low doses of PEG increases intake of high-tannin foods and improves performance of cattle, sheep, and goats. Neutralizing the effects of tannins with supplemental PEG promotes the use of woody species usually considered useless as forage resources. Supplementing animals with PEG has the potential to improve the profitability - mainly milk production - of high-yielding dairy goats fed high-quality foods and supplemented with browse in Mediterranean areas. However, its contribution to production systems utilizing low-yielding goats is limited. Our findings also support the notion that supplemental PEG enhances the ability of livestock to control shrub encroachment and to maintain firebreaks. However, our work also suggests that the effectiveness of supplemental PEG may be low if alternative forages are equal or superior in nutritional quality and contain fewer metabolites with adverse effects.
