Scientific computing is used frequently in an increasing number of disciplines to accelerate scientific discovery. Many such computing problems involve the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDE). In this thesis we explore and develop methodology for high-performance implementations of PDE solvers for shared-memory multiprocessor architectures. We consider three realistic PDE settings: solution of the Maxwell equations in 3D using an unstructured grid and the method of conjugate gradients, solution of the Poisson equation in 3D using a geometric multigrid method, and solution of an advection equation in 2D using structured adaptive mesh refinement. We apply software optimization techniques to increase both parallel efficiency and the degree of data locality. In our evaluation we use several different shared-memory architectures ranging from symmetric multiprocessors and distributed shared-memory architectures to chip-multiprocessors. For distributed shared-memory systems we explore methods of data distribution to increase the amount of geographical locality. We evaluate automatic and transparent page migration based on runtime sampling, user-initiated page migration using a directive with an affinity-on-next-touch semantic, and algorithmic optimizations for page-placement policies. Our results show that page migration increases the amount of geographical locality and that the parallel overhead related to page migration can be amortized over the iterations needed to reach convergence. This is especially true for the affinity-on-next-touch methodology whereby page migration can be initiated at an early stage in the algorithms. We also develop and explore methodology for other forms of data locality and conclude that the effect on performance is significant and that this effect will increase for future shared-memory architectures. Our overall conclusion is that, if the involved locality issues are addressed, the shared-memory programming model provides an efficient and productive environment for solving many important PDE problems.

On s'intéresse dans cette thèse à la couverture des produits dérivés dans des marchés incomplets. L'approche choisie peut se voir comme une extension des travaux de M. Schweizer sur la minimisation locale du risque quadratique. En effet, tout en restant dans le cadre de la modélisation des actifs par des semimartingales, notre méthode consiste à remplacer le critère de risque quadratique par un critère de risque plus général, sous la forme d'une fonctionnelle convexe du coût local. Nous obtenons d'abord des résultats d'existence, d'unicité et de caractérisation des stratégies optimales dans un marché sans friction, en temps discret et en temps continu. Puis nous explicitons ces stratégies dans le cadre de modèles de diffusion avec et sans sauts. Nous étendons également notre méthode au cas où la liquidité n'est plus infinie. Enfin nous montrons par le biais de simulations numériques les effets du choix de la fonctionnelle de risque sur la constitution du portefeuille optimal.

An energy harvesting node (EHN) operates using the energy harvested from the environment, e.g., solar, piezoelectric and radio frequency, which presents the tantalizing possibility of perpetually operating of sensor nodes. However, the operation of an EHN is governed by the energy neutrality constraint (ENC), which makes it mandatory that, at any point in time, the total cumulative energy consumed by a node must not exceed the total cumulative energy harvested by it. Due to the random and sporadic nature of the harvested energy, energy management becomes the central issue in the optimization of energy harvesting (EH) communication systems. The design of energy management policies for the systems where only the transmitter is an EHN has been considered extensively in the literature. On the other hand, designing the policies for the networks where both the transmitter and receiver use harvested energy to operate is significantly more challenging, as aspects of coordination of the transmission attempts as well as nonzero decoding cost come into play. In this thesis, we present the design of energy management policies for a variety of scenarios where all nodes in a network are energy harvesting. The main contributions of this thesis are as follows: • In the initial part of the thesis (Chapters 2-5), we present the design of packet drop probability (PDP)-optimal power control policies for retransmission-based multi-hop EH links where all the nodes are EHNs and the cost of decoding the data at the receiver is nonzero. In order to design the policies, we first derive closed-form PDP expressions for multi-hop EH links employing retransmission index based policies (RIPs) that are unaware of the state-of-charge (SoC) of the batteries at the nodes. Since the transmit power prescribed by an SoC-unaware RIP is independent of the current battery state, the RIPs obviate the need to measure the SoC of the battery. In practice, it is difficult to accurately measure the SoC of the battery, and therefore this is an added benefit of the proposed policy. • Using the derived PDP expressions, we formulate and solve a PDP optimization problem to obtain near-optimal RIPs. To design the SoC-unaware RIPs we use the notion of energy unconstrained regime (EUR), in which, the average energy con-sumed is less than the average energy harvested. We show that policies designed to operate in the EUR are near-optimal, even with finite sized energy buffers. This, in turn, allows us to replace the ENC in the PDP optimization problem with a single EUR constraint. This significantly simplifies the complexity of designing the optimal policies. We show that the RIPs obtained under EUR constraints are near-optimal and achieve the lower bound on the PDP. Moreover, these policies can be implemented in a distributed fashion. • In the later part of the thesis (Chapter 6), we investigate impact of lack of coordination between the transmitter and receiver, i.e., when the transmitter (receiver) does not have the information about the SoC of the battery at the receiver (transmitter). The lack of coordination leads to the wastage of energy when, in a slot, only the transmitter (or receiver) is on. The goal here is to maximize the through-put between a transmitter and receiver without any explicit coordination, and only using the statistical information about the energy arrivals at both the nodes. We derive a genie-aided upper bound on the throughput achievable, by analyzing a system that has non-causal knowledge of energy arrivals. Next, we present an online, distributed energy management policy which achieves the through-put within a gap of one bit from the upper bound and requires an occasional one bit feedback. The above policy is modified to obtain a time-dilated policy which achieves the upper bound asymptotically, with the battery size at both the nodes. We also propose a near-optimal, deterministic, fully uncoordinated policy which requires no feedback from the receiver. Our simulation results confirm the theoretical findings and illustrate the trade-offs between system parameters. The policies presented here not only achieve the upper bound but are also simple to implement. Our policies allow the nodes to operate in a truly uncoordinated fashion which, in turn, completely removes the overhead in the feedback.

This thesis lays out the basic principles for analyzing a water using operation and then compares the freshwater and wastewater flowrates for the system with and without reuse. First, the system is defined as a mass transfer problem in which the contaminant is transferred from a contaminant rich process stream to a water stream. Next, the system is analyzed treating each water-using operation separately. Finally, the minimum freshwater requirement for the integrated system is determined by maximum water reuse subject to constraints such as minimum driving force for mass transfer. For this analysis, the concentration composite curve, the concentration interval diagram and the freshwater pinch are introduced. The methods of regeneration reuse and recycle are also discussed. The approach for single contaminant problem is extended to multiple contaminants problem with multiple constraints. The preliminary mass exchange network is designed on the basis of concentration interval diagram and further simplification is achieved by loop breaking. The basic concepts of each method are formulated into a mathematical code to obtain computer-aided solution to a problem. Two industrial case studies are discussed to illustrate the significance of wastewater minimization and the results obtained are compared with that predicted using analytical method. The first one is a SO2 extraction problem from four process streams and the second is a petroleum refinery complex problem. An average reduction of about 20% in the freshwater requirement is achieved with water reuse while a reduction of about 60 % is achieved by regeneration reuse. There is also a reduction in the number of units in the mass exchange network by four units with water reuse.

Physical routability constraints such as legal location checking and excessive number of vias are usually ignored in most of the clock tree algorithms. These Constraints could make an abstract clock tree difficult to route in practice and cause important manufacturability and reliability challenges. Therefore the final clock tree layout specifications can be seriously deviated from the expected ones. Vias have major impact on circuit reliability and manufacturing yield. The variability in via resistance is becoming an increasing concern in nanotechnologies. In this thesis a practical frame work is proposed to construct the clock tree network under via constraint. We propose an algorithm that minimizes the number of bends that is closely related to the number of vias. The proposed algorithm is able to construct a zero skew clock tree with at most one bend branch merging. By performing simultaneous wire sizing and clock tree construction, the algorithm effectively reduces the number of bends at the expense of a small increase in capacitance. Furthermore, the number of vias is also controlled by considering a pre-specified pattern to route the internal clock tree edges. The impact of the pattern routing is taken into account in the early clock distribution design phase. We introduce a probabilistic routing demand estimation method to integrate the expected routing demand of the clock net with other clock tree optimization metrics. A new demand driven cost function is exploited in network topology generation as well as branch point embedding stages of a zero skew clock tree algorithm to reduce the number of vias. Our experiments show considerable improvements in the total number of vias. 28% reduction in the number of vias is obtained while the total clock tree wire length is reduced by an average of 8%. The post-routing induced clock skew is also controlled efficiently.

In the present world with the increasing use of Aluminium alloy wheels in automotive industry the Aluminium foundry industry had to focus on the quality of the products. The quality of a foundry industry can be increased by minimizing the casting defects during production. Aim of the current study is to study the production line of an aluminum alloy wheel manufacturing industry and to improve the quality of production using quality control tools. This study shows the systematic approach to find the root cause of a major defects in aluminium castings using defect diagnostic approach as well as cause and effect diagram. Casting defect analysis is carried out using techniques like historical data analysis, cause-effect diagrams, design of experiments and root cause analysis. Data from X-ray inspection (Radiographic Inspection) have been collected along with the production parameter data. Using check sheets data has been collected and all the defects have been studied. Using Pareto chart major defects in the aluminium castings were noted. The major defects for the rejections during production were identified as shrinkages, inclusions, porosity/gas holes and cracks. Each defect is studied thoroughly and the possible causes for the defects are shown in Fishbone Diagrams (Cause Effect Diagrams). As the shrinkages mainly occur due to lack of feedability during the fluid flow the stalk changing frequency is noted along with the shrinkages defects and a relation is drawn between them. As hydrogen forms gas holes and porosity in the aluminium castings the amount of hydrogen present in the molten metal is studied by finding specific gravity of the samples collected. The molten metal temperature effects the amount of the hydrogen absorbed by it. .So the effect of molten metal temperature on the specific gravity of the sample collected have been shown in a graph and the optimum value for molten metal temperature was found out.

This project presents solution of a simple optimization problem of flow through circular bent channels. Six different bending angles of the pipe were taken for finding the effect of bending angle on the pressure drop. The diameter and length of all the pipes were taken same irrespective of the bending angles. The CFD model equations were solved to predict the hydrodynamic behaviour of pipe. The models were solved by ANSYS Fluent 15.0 solver. The CFD models were validated by comparing the computed pressure drop with the analytically computed pressure as given in the previous literature. The entropy generation rate was compared and the optimum bending angle was found by taking pressure drop across the pipe as reference. The entropy generations in both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions were studied and compared mutually for a particular flow rate. An EGM analysis was carried out and a thermodynamically optimal solution was identified. It was also observed that as the bending angle increases the entropy generation decreases for a particular flow rate.

With the limits of power source taken into consideration, the efficiency of the traction drive is of particular importance in the engineering of electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (EV/PHEV). Thanks to its high power density, high efficiency and high torque to weight ratio, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) distinguishes itself from other traction system candidates in the EV/PHEV application market. This research sets out to explore how the control strategy of PMSM can be optimized so as to achieve a better efficiency performance of EV/PHEV. Prior research has put forth Loss Minimization Control Strategy (LMC) and developed its algorithm by considering a certain operating point. The focus has been placed on how to approximately solve the optimal current reference from a high order expression. So far, very limited effort has been made toward a generalized form of LMC algorithm over the full machine operation region, i.e. constant torque and constant power region. In this thesis, a generalized relationship between d-q current for the LMC of PMSM is presented, and maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) and maximum torque per voltage (MTPV) can be derived as special cases of LMC. The proposed control strategy shows better response and enhancement of the machine efficiency over full speed range when compared to conventional control strategies. In order to develop the control method, the machine operation principle is discussed first, and the machine model is built for the control purpose. Then based on the analysis of PMSM operation performance with voltage and current constrains, the boundary of the machine operating is defined. In the light of literature review, the LMC is derived from the equivalent model of PMSM by considering the core loss. And the performance of the LMC is analyzed in detail for both constant torque and constant power region. In addition, the effects of parameters variation are investigated. Thus the control strategy is improved by considering full speed range. A Simulink model of PMSM with core loss taken into consider is developed to test the proposed control method. The experiment is performed on a lab surface-mounted PMSM. The experiment results are found to be consistent with simulation results.

Numerous advantages attained by integrating Distributed Generation (DG) in distribution systems. These advantages include decreasing power losses and improving voltage profiles. Such benefits can be achieved and enhanced if DGs are optimally sized and located in the systems. This theses presents a distribution generation (DG) allocation strategy to improve node voltage and power loss of radial distribution systems using genetic algorithm (GA). The objective is to minimize active power losses while keep the voltage profiles in the network within specified limit. This approach finds optimal DG active power and optimal OLTC position for tap changing transformer. Also uncertainty in load and generation are considered. Thus, in this work, the load demand at each node and the DG power generation at candidate nodes are considered as a possibilistic variable represented by two different triangular fuzzy number. The simulation results shows that reduction of power loss in distribution system is possible and all node voltages variation can be achieved within the required limit if DG are optimally placed in the system. Induction DG placement into the distribution system also give a better performance from capacitor bank placement. In modern load growth scenario uncertainty load and generation model shows that reduction of power loss in distribution system is possible and all node voltages variation can be achieved within the required limit without violating the thermal limit of the system.

The presented study discusses the Air Traffic Flow Management Problem by introducing alternative routing options for aircrafts in a constrained airspace. This work aims to minimize the total cost while all safety constraints such as mid-air collision avoidance and separation distance between aircrafts are respected. In this regard, a mixed integer programming (MIP) model has been developed by using a non-time indexed modeling strategy that benefits from a 3-dimensional (3D) network. The model provides the flight-route with a list of consecutive nodes to be visited by an aircraft and calculations on speed changes, and exact arrival and departure times on each travelling arc. Therefore, the separation distance between aircrafts on the network will be guaranteed despite of high travelling speeds over the arcs to avoid mid-air collisions. Designed for a single airport arrival and departure instances, the NP-hard nature of the MIP model does not prevent large problems to be solved on a personal computer using CPLEX, but also provides real-time decision making possible through performing an iterative solution. Elaborazione di sequenze di immagini con metodi variazionali.
Analysis of left ventricle echocardiographic movies by vari-ational methods: a dedicated software for ECG and ECHO syn-chronizations during cardiac cycles. The image sequences elaboration, which represent our main topic, concerns the identi cation of contours of an object for segmentation and study of its movement over time. A newer dynamic approach to the well-known static variational method for the time-series medical echocardiographic images is presented, and a graphic software applications for synchronization between cardiac movement and electric signals (ECG) are developed. Many approaches have been proposed to process time-series of digital images, and it is di cult establish the most e ective one. Here we focus on PDE-based and variational methods. Standard snake models of closed curve evolution, pertaining to the Level-Set Method due to S. Osher and J. A. Sethian et al., have been implemented to characterize the internal ventricular area over time. We have applied standard nite di erence techniques for the approximation solution of the involved eikonal equations for front evolution. Well-known techniques of Gaussian regularization, such as heat equation, have highlighted the loss of de nition of ventricular edge. Thus we now present a numerical frame preprocessing technique, based on a variational model, that consists of functional minimization with a Mumford-Shah (M-S) time-dependent energy term, which is suitable to enhance ventricular edge and regularize initial data for curve evolution. This one, unlike the standard convolution with a regularizing operator, allows to compute the bright-intensity gradient of the image for velocity term of the curve evolution. We show the formulation of the standard model problem for image segmentations by curve evolution and a newer approach of pre-treating model by functional minimization. The applicability of the resolution method is discussed and an open mathematical problem for a new functional involving time-dependence are presented. Finally we describes the digital format of movies, the adaptation of single frames, the step which characterize the elaboration protocol, the quality of the results obtained with the preprocessing on a test problem. We additionaly describe the choice and implementation of reduced numerical methods in the real case and their computational cost. We compare results obtained by various preprocessing methods on identi ed areas, the curve evolution beyond the edge, ventricular area his trends over time and the evaluated Ejection Fraction. The implemented graphic application is presented, as well as the principal use of the signal-synchronizing software.
