Streszczenie:
This paper reviews the studies on the electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of sandwich-type complexes M ( Pc )2 and M 2( Pc )3. The subjects discussed are as follows. (1) Electronic spectra of closed-shell Pc dimers and trimers. The complexes with closed-shell systems, such as [ Lu ( Pc )2]−, Sn ( Pc )2 and Lu 2( Pc )3, can be thought of as stacked systems composed only of Pc 2−. The excited states of these complexes can be described by locally excited and charge transfer configurations. The coupling terms of the configurations are written using orbitals localized on each Pc ring. Assignments of the observed absorption bands are discussed. Computational studies on the band assignments were carried out using a localized molecular orbital (LO) basis which maximizes orbital populations on one of the Pc rings. (2) Electronic structures of πelectron-deficient Pc dimers and trimers. Oxidation of [ Lu ( Pc )2]− or Lu 2( Pc )3 yields systems with π-electron deficiency or π-hole(s) residing on multiple Pc sites. The delocalized nature of the π-hole in Lu ( Pc )2 is elucidated by comparison of the electronic spectra of symmetric and asymmetric dimers composed of Pc and Nc ( H 2 Nc ≡ naphthalocyanine ). The band assignments of the dimer radicals are discussed. The Pc trimer radical shows an intense absorption band at about 5000 cm−1, which is 2000 cm−1 lower than the valence resonance band of Lu ( Pc )2. The two-electron-deficient complexes [ Lu ( Pc )2]+ and [ Lu 2( Pc )3]2+ also show intense near-IR bands at higher energy than the corresponding monoradical species. The interactions that determine the excitation energies of the near-IR bands of the π-electron-deficient species are elucidated.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate whether supplementing branched-chain amino acids (AA) (BCAA) along with a reduced-protein diet increases piglet growth, and whether elevated feed intake and muscle growth-promoting effect contribute to this improvement. In Expt 1, twenty-eight weanling piglets were randomly fed one of the following four diets: a positive control (PC) diet, a reduced-protein negative control (NC) diet, an NC diet supplemented with BCAA to the same levels as in the PC diet (test 1 (T1)) and an NC diet supplemented with a 2-fold dose of BCAA in T1 diet (test 2 (T2)) for 28 d. In Expt 2, twenty-one weanling piglets were randomly assigned to NC, T1 and pair-fed T1 (P) groups. NC and T1 diets were the same as in Expt 1, whereas piglets in the P group were individually pair-fed with the NC group. In Expt 1, the NC group had reduced piglet growth and feed intake compared with the PC group, which were restored in T1 and T2 groups, but no differences were detected between T1 and T2 groups. In Expt 2, T1 and P groups showed increases in growth and mass of some muscles compared with the NC group. Increased feed intake after BCAA supplementation was associated with increased mRNA expressions of agouti-related peptide and co-express neuropeptide Y (NPY) and phosphorylation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (S6K1), as well as decreased mRNA expressions of melanocortin-4 receptor and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript and phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2α in the hypothalamus. No differences were observed among PC, T1 and T2 groups except for higher NPY mRNA expression in the T2 group than in the PC group (Expt 1). Phosphorylation of mTOR and S6K1 in muscle was enhanced after BCAA supplementation, which was independent of change in feed intake (Expt 2). In conclusion, supplementing BCAA to reduced-protein diets increases feed intake and muscle mass, and contributes to better growth performance in piglets.

The corrosion behavior of a nanocrystalline (NC) low carbon steel (LCS) surface film deposited on a conventional polycrystalline (PC) LCS by magnetron sputtering was studied in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution using impedance and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The corrosion inhibiting effect of a non toxic organic compound (methionine) and synergistic KI additives was also studied. Microstructure characterization by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy revealed no phase changes due to nanoprocessing and the grain size of the NC surface layer was ~ 40 nm. Electrochemical results show that both the PC and NC surfaces underwent active corrosion with no transition to passivation in the potential range studied. Surface nanocrystallization however increased the corrosion susceptibility of low carbon steel more than two-fold, leading to a decrease in interfacial impedance and an increase in the kinetics of the anodic reaction. Methionine inhibited the corrosion of both specimens with comparable inhibition efficiencies. Iodide ions synergistically increased the inhibition efficiency of methionine on both specimens. This synergistic effect was more pronounced for the bulk steel and has been discussed vis-à-vis the more positive surface charge on bulk steel surface at the corrosion potential compared to the nanocrystalline surface.

Partial discharge calibrators need to be periodically calibrated traceable to national standards. VTT MIKES, the National Metrology Institute (NMI) of Finland, has official expertise to calibrate the apparent charge of PD calibrators from 1 pC to 100 nC according to IEC 60270. Recently, VTT MIKES has developed techniques to measure charges as low as 0.01 pC with 3 % uncertainty (k = 2). VTT MIKES has participated to an intercomparison of four NMI’s in 2018 and the results indicate that VTT MIKES can both expand their official measurement capabilities and lower their uncertainties. This paper presents VTT MIKES’s precision calibration system for PD calibrators. Additionally, an overview of commercial PD calibrators’ performance is provided and compared to the requirements of IEC 60270. Data is based on the calibrations performed during the last 10 years.

Abstract The trial examined if a novel phytase from a bacterial consensus 6-phytase (CP) variant expressed in Trichoderma reesei could maintain performance of grow-finish pigs fed diets without inorganic phosphorus. This trial was done in pigs of commercial genetics that were raised from 26 kg body weight (BW) until slaughter. Diets were formulated using corn, soybean meal, and wheat midds and were based on nutrient requirements from National Swine Nutrition Guide (2010). Three treatments were tested in a randomized complete block design with 9 replicate pens (26 mixed sex pigs/rep): 1) positive control (PC), 2) negative control (NC) without inorganic P (nutrient difference equated to a1,000 FTU/kg matrix versus the PC), and 3) NC + CP 500 FTU/kg (CP). Mash diets were fed ad libitum in 5 phases: Grower 1 and 2, Finisher 1, 2, and 3 (for total of 84 d). Phytate P in the diets was between 0.29 and 0.26%. Data analysis used ANOVA with mean separation via Tukey honest significant difference with P < 0.05%. No change to dietary P was done in the trial as lameness did not reach the adjustment threshold even in the NC. Lameness caused removal of about 0.7% of animals. At market weight, the results show similar final body weight (BW) for treatments PC and CP, and both were different than NC. Average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) showed similar results for PC and CP, but only the PC was different than NC. Gain to feed (G:F) showed no differences between treatments. These results showed that CP at 500 units/kg improved body weight of pigs fed a no added P diet.

The properties of two-flavored massless Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in (1+1)-dimensional R1 × S1 space–time with compactified space coordinate are investigated in the presence of isospin and quark number chemical potentials μI, μ. The consideration is performed in the large Nc limit, where Nc is the number of colored quarks. It is shown that at L = ∞ (L is the length of the circumference S1) the charged pion condensation (PC) phase with zero quark number density is realized at arbitrary nonzero μI and for rather small values of μ. However, at arbitrary finite values of L the phase portrait of the model contains the charged PC phase with nonzero quark number density (in the case of periodic boundary conditions for quark fields). Hence, finite sizes of the system can serve as a factor promoting the appearance of the charged PC phase in quark matter with nonzero baryon densities. In contrast, the phase with chiral symmetry breaking may exist only at rather large values of L.

A relativistic electron bunch with a large charge (~2 nC ) was produced from a self-modulated laser wakefield acceleration configuration. In this experiment, an intense laser pulse with a peak power of 2 TW and a duration of 700 fs was focused in a nitrogen gas jet, and multi-MeV electrons were observed from the strong laser-plasma interaction. By passing the electrons through a small pinhole-like collimator of cone f/70, we observed a narrowing in the electron beam's energy spread. The beam clearly showed a small energy-spread behavior with a central energy of 4.8 MeV and a charge of 115 pC. The acceleration gradient was estimated to be about 20 GeV/m.

It is shown that the chemical potential μI5 promotes the appearance of the charged PC phase with nonzero baryon density. Results of both models are qualitatively the same, this fact enhances one's confidence in the obtained predictions. It is established that in the large-Nc limit (Nc is the number of colored quarks) there exists a duality correspondence between the chiral symmetry breaking phase and the charged pion condensation one.

Orifice area is changed by rotating the valve core controlled with a PC-controlled stepper motor which, and then an accurate adjustment of flow rate is thus ensured. As the change of the rotation angle is continuous, the flow rate also changes continuously, so the change of the pressure must be continuous.

Abstract The implementation of new methods of oseoporotic therapy requires tests on an animal model. One of the best is the sheep, whose numerous advantages over other models are described in the literature. The aim of this study was induction of osteoporosis using steroids and ovariorectomy methods in sheep and description of the change in parameters with regard to healthy sheep. The study was performed on female „merino” breed sheep divided into three groups: Negative control (NC) healthy animals, positive control (PC) ovariorectomised animals and steroid group (SC) where methylprednisolone was implemented. Blood tests, diagnostic arthroscopy, quantitative computed tomography and X-Ray micro-tomography of bone were carried out. Blood tests revealed a decreased level of estrogens, progesterone and increased parathormone and cortisol levels in the SC group. A decrease in bone turnover markers and an increase in bone resorption markers in all groups were also noted. Diagnostic arthroscopy revealed osteoarthrosis in PC and SC groups. Radiological density tests showed a slight decrease in PC and NC groups whereas there was more than a triple decrease in SC. Results obtained from microCT showed quickly developing osteoporosis in the SC group, which is reflected in numerous parameters analysed in this study. The best effects for osteoporosis induction were obtained using ovariorectomised sheep with methylprednisolone injections.

As an intermediate medium, a thin Si plate is excited by the energetic, intense electron beam to produce a semiconductor plasma, which in turn deflects counter-colliding laser light having 1 μm wavelength. An electron beam of sub-nC charge sufficiently induces the needed electron number density gradient of 1 × 1020 cm−3 per tens of μm length at the interaction point. Demonstration during an inverse Compton scattering experiment by a counter-colliding electron beam of 300 pC and 70 MeV with an Nd: YAG laser at a wavelength of 1 μm is reported.

Abstract Our previous studies have shown that supplementation of Bacillus subtilis enhanced growth rate, improved gut barrier function, and modified colon microbiome of weaned pigs infected with pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli). The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of Bacillus subtilis on colon digesta metabolomic profiles of weaned pigs experimentally infected with F18 E. coli. Forty-eight pigs (6.73 ± 0.77 kg BW) were individually housed in disease containment rooms and randomly allotted to one of the four treatments (12 pigs/treatment). Four treatments included negative control (NC), positive control (PC), low-dose (1.28 × 109 CFU Bacillus subtilis/kg feed), and high-dose (2.56 × 109 CFU Bacillus subtilis/kg feed). The experiment lasted 18 d [7 d before and 11 d after first inoculation (d 0)]. The F18 E. coli inoculum was orally provided to all pigs with the dose of 1010 cfu/3 mL for 3 consecutive days, except NC. Twenty-four pigs (6 pigs/treatment) were euthanized on d 5 post-inoculation (PI) and the remained pigs were euthanized on d 11 PI to collect colon digesta for the analysis of metabolomic profiles by gas chromatography time of flight-mass spectrometer (GCTOF-MS). All processed data were statistically analyzed and evaluated by online MetaboAnalyst tool. No significant differences were observed in the metabolites between NC and PC on d 5 and 11 PI. Compared with PC, low- and high-dose Bacillus subtilis reduced (Fold change > 1.5; FDR < 0.20) four metabolites (proline, 2-hydroxyglutaric acid, lysine, and glutamic acid) and two metabolites (ribose, and D-xylulose) in colon digesta on d 5 PI, respectively. These metabolites were related to aminoacyl-tRNA-biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism, and lysine degradation. In conclusion, supplementation of Bacillus subtilis modified the levels of microbial metabolites associated with amino acid metabolism in colon digesta of pigs.

The numerical control (NC) machining of free-form surfaces is usually accomplished utilizing minicomputer or mainframe computer aided design and manufacturing (C ADC AM) systems. The resulting NC data are suitable for either three-axis or five-axis machining dependent upon machine tool type/capability and CAM package complexity. However, the cost of such packages and systems precludes the use of these in smaller companies with an occasional requirement for components embodying free-form surfaces. The increasing availability of powerful yet reasonably priced personal computers (PC) coupled with improving software provides such companies with a far cheaper alternative approach. However, a common feature of PC-based CADCAM systems is that they are limited to 2 1/2-axis machining for all but special applications such as three-axis canted Z-plane milling of four-axis wire electro discharge machining (EDM). This paper presents a method for manufacturing true three-dimensional free-form surfaces using PC-based 2 1/2-axis CADCAM systems. All the main functions performed on mainframe systems can be performed on personal computers, such as toolpath generation for free-form surfaces, cusp height determination and change in shape and volume which may be used for the compensation of shrinkage or to suit market requirements. This is significant for manufacturers who make use of moulds, such as are found in the plastic processing industries. The manufacture of a blown plastic bottle mould is presented as a typical example. The inclusion into the PC environment of features to be found in mainframe systems is also discussed, such as machining the surface patch by patch in any direction or machining a number of patches at one time, shape and volume change in any direction, cusp height determination, etc.

This paper describes the development of a virtual CNC controller. Controller is the major driver for a CNC machine. Similarly, virtual controller is the key driving component for a virtual CNC, which is a three-dimensional digitized physical CNC. A virtual CNC can exist in every PC serving as the complementary safer counterpart in lecturing and learning the hand on operation of expensive machinery such as five-axis milling machine, high speed CNC and mill-turn because the virtual CNC will not break. Virtual reality environment provided by EON studio software has been adopted in establishing the interactivity of a virtual CNC based on the geometry model constructed in off-the-shelf CAD software. Visual Basic was used in implementing the graphical user interface to operate the virtual CNC through the developed virtual controller. The virtual controller is in charge of (1) parsing user’s NC codes, (2) simulating the tool path of the parsed NC codes, and (3)driving the virtual CNC according to the tool path. The developed virtual CNC controller has been successfully applied in implementing virtual CNCs based on two physical three-axis CNC machines and has also been demonstrated in an international exposition successfully. The virtual controller can enable the virtual CNC in facilitating lecturing, tutoring, self-learning, and reducing the chances of accidental breakdown of precious CNC equipment.

Innovation literature advocates the transition from a technological orientation to market orientation on the part of innovator and entrepreneur. However, the transition requires a change in mindset on the part of these innovation agents, who may be affected by their national contexts. This paper reports a study is to example factors that account for a different transition from a Technological Orientation (TO) towards a Market Orientation (MO) and the impact of national cultures. To analyse possible intercultural differences, the study involved two independent samples from Germany and the Netherlands. The study found that the orientation to versus MO of the Dutch engineer is not different from that of the German engineer, probably because of a common professional culture (PC), which is different from an MO. The transition from technological orientation towards market orientation occurred earlier for the Dutch engineers than for the German engineers. However German engineers demonstrated less MO than Dutch firms. A plausible reason for this is that the strong feminine values of Dutch national and corporate culture (NC and CC, Hofstede, 1980a and b and 1991) might lead more easily to a customer orientation (Market Pull) than the more masculine German values keeping a strong technological base. In sum, firms might consider carefully an optimal CC x PC interaction instead of NC-differences to reach effective technological innovation in the global market.

Abstract The creep of face-slab concrete in a rockfill dam is critical for determining the restrained stress and cracking resistance of the concrete at an early age. In this article, the mix proportion of the face-slab concrete for a rockfill dam under construction without any cracking resistance additive was taken as the reference concrete (called JC) mix proportion. The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and magnesium oxide expansion agent (MEA) were incorporated into JC to prepare face-slab concretes called NC and PC, respectively. The temperature–stress tests under temperature matching curing (TMC) and constant temperature curing (CTC) modes were conducted on these three kinds of concretes to investigate the effects of CNTs and MEA on the early-age creep properties of the face-slab concrete under variable stress conditions. The results showed that the creep performance of NC concrete under CTC mode was lower than that under TMC mode. Combined with mercury intrusion porosimetry test results, the mechanism of the effect of CNTs and MEA on creep was analyzed. The results showed that the temperature change may lead to the CNTs debonding from the cementitious matrix or matrix cracking for the NC concrete. The incorporation of CNTs can increase the early-age creep and improve the cracking resistance of concrete.

Although many methods have been developed in order to reduce the negative effects in laying hens reared at high cage density, researches on effects of dietary supplementation of oregano (Oreganum syriacum L., OEO) essential oil as a feed additive to the diets are extremely sparse. This study investigated the effects of OEO and caging density on performance parameters, egg quality criteria, some blood biochemical parameters, blood antioxidant capacity, and intestinal histopathology of laying hens. We used 276 white Lohmann laying hens aged 38–40 weeks in the experiment. The animals were divided to positive control (600 cm2 hen/cage, PC), negative control (360 cm2 hen/cage, NC), negative control+ 200 mg/kg OEO (NC+O2), negative control+ 400 mg/kg OEO (NC+O4), and negative control+ 600 mg/kg OEO (NC+O6). In this study, it was determined that egg weight and egg shell weight increased at higher caging density, but they did not change with dietary supplementation of OEO. In addition, the plasma calcium and phosphorus decreased with the higher caging density and dietary supplementation of OEO. Supplemented OEO to the diets of the laying hens reduced lipid peroxidation and improved antioxidant capacity and intestinal histopathology of laying hens. As a result, it was determined that OEO decreased the negative effects of high caging density. While this positive effect was found to be at a maximum dose at 400 mg/kg of OEO, it was determined that a dose of 600 mg/kg of OEO had a toxic effect, if even numerically.

Color stability through wear and time, one of the most important esthetic factor, influencing patients acceptance of an acrylic removable prosthesis, was investigated in vivo in a limited number of studies and solely on prefabricated denture teeth. The aims of the present paper were to assess the color changes occurred with the commercially available PMMA for 3D printing technique, improved by doping with titania nanoparticles, and to evaluate the color stability and stainability of the PMMA with 0.4%TiO2 denture teeth, on denture wearers, over a period of one year. Ten patients rehabilitated with removable complete dentures or implant retained overdentures manufactured using a new nanopolymer, PMMA doped with 0.4% by weight of TiO2 as denture base and artificial teeth material and Digital Light Projection (3D printing) technology, were evaluated in the present study. The color of each denture was assessed with a spectrophotometer, before and after use, in CIE L*a*b* system. The before measurement was made on the positive control - PMMA with nanoTiO2 (PC), while the after was measured the color of the tooth after one year complete denture use. Negative control - PMMA without nanoTiO2 (NC) was also compared to PC and the following parameters were registered: Value (L), Chroma (C), Hue (H), redness/greenness (a) and yellowness/blueness (b). A color difference (DE) between 1.63 and 5.24 was measured for all patients, while for the NC DE was triple (17.65). The highest DE value for all denture wearers with TiO2 nanofiler inclusions was below the maximum acceptability threshold, in accordance to the patients subjective evaluation, who were unable to identify the color change.

Abstract A cloud scale model with a 12-class bulk microphysics scheme, including 10 ice phases and a 3D lightning parameterization, was used to investigate the electrical properties of a well-documented tropical squall line from the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE). Consistent with observations, the simulated maximum updraft speeds across the squall line seldom exceeded 10 m s−1, which was expected given the relatively shallow 30-dBZ echo tops that rarely extended above the top of the mixed-phase layer (−20°C isotherm). Enhanced warm rain processes caused most of the liquid water to precipitate near the gust front at lower levels (below 4 km AGL), which accounted for the small amounts of graupel and cloud water content present in the mixed-phase region and, consequently, for generally weak charging and electrification. Most of the charge present in the squall line was generated within a few storm cells just behind the leading edge of the gust front that had sufficiently strong updraft speeds near the melting level to produce moderate values of graupel mixing ratio (>0.5 g kg−1). In contrast, the trailing stratiform region at the back of the line, which was mainly composed of ice crystals and snow particles, contained only weak net charge densities (<0.03 nC m−3). The spatial collocation of regions characterized by charge densities exceeding 0.01 nC m−3 and noninductive (NI) charging rates greater than 0.1 pC m−3 s−1 in this stratiform region suggests that NI charging is a plausible source for the majority of this charge, which was confined to discrete regions having small amounts of graupel (approximately 0.1–0.3 g kg−1) and cloud water content (CWC; ∼0.1 g m−3). The simulated weak updraft speeds and shallow echo tops resulted in a system exhibiting little overall total lightning activity. Although the 5-min average intracloud (IC) flash rate rarely exceeded 10 flashes per minute and only 3 negative cloud-to-ground (−CG) lightning flashes were produced during the entire 4 h and 30 min of simulation, this still was more electrical activity than observed. This tendency for the model to generate more lightning flashes than observed remained when the inductive charging mechanism was turned off, which reduced the total amount of simulated flashes by about 43%. The three CG flashes and the great majority of the IC flashes occurred within the strongest cells located in the mature zone, which exhibited a normal tripole charge structure.

Abstract Benzoic acid (BA) and essential oils (EO) can minimize growth performance losses due to the removal of antibiotics and change the intestinal health of weaned piglets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of BA and EO on inflammatory response, diarrhea incidence, and growth performance of the nursery phase. One hundred and twenty barrows were weaned at 23 days (6.40 ± 0.53 kg) and assigned into 3 treatments (10 replicates) in randomized block design: basal diet without additives (NC), basal diet with 200 ppm of colistin sulphate (PC), and association of 0,3% benzoic acid and essential oil (BA+EO). The feed intake and body weight were recorded at 0 and 42 days. The feces were assessed daily (per animal) and graded as normal feces (no diarrhea) or liquid or pasty stools (presence of diarrhea). On days 1, 3, and 9, blood samples were collected (5 replicates) for white blood cells (WBC) counts. Growth performance was analyzed by MIXED procedure (SAS, 2009) and the Tukey test was used to compare the means (P < 0.050). The WBC counts were analyzed by repeated-measures analysis of variance, by MIXED procedure. Diarrhea incidence was analyzed by GENMOD procedure (SAS, 2009). The BA+EO treatment showed a similar body weight (P = 0.014) and average daily gain (P = 0.012) than the PC group and lower feed conversion ratio (P = 0.037) compared to the NC group. The pigs of the BA+EO treatment had the lowest diarrhea incidence during the total period (P < 0.001). The supplementation with BA+EO or antibiotics reduced the counts of total WBC (P = 0.008) and neutrophils (P = 0.003). In conclusion, supplementation with BA+EO reduces the inflammatory response and the incidence of diarrhea in the nursery phase, that may be related to the improvement in the FCR.

One of the goals of modern dynamic radiotherapy treatments is to deliver high-dose values in the shortest irradiation time possible. In such a context, fast X-ray detectors and reliable front-end readout electronics for beam diagnostics are crucial to meet the necessary quality assurance requirements of care plans. This work describes a diamond-based detection system able to acquire and process the dose delivered by every single pulse sourced by a linear accelerator (LINAC) generating 6-MV X-ray beams. The proposed system is able to measure the intensity of X-ray pulses in a limited integration period around each pulse, thus reducing the inaccuracy induced by unnecessarily long acquisition times. Detector sensitivity under 6-MV X-photons in the 0.1–10 Gy dose range was measured to be 302.2 nC/Gy at a bias voltage of 10 V. Pulse-by-pulse measurements returned a charge-per-pulse value of 84.68 pC, in excellent agreement with the value estimated (but not directly measured) with a commercial electrometer operating in a continuous integration mode. Significantly, by intrinsically holding the acquired signal, the proposed system enables signal processing even in the millisecond period between two consecutive pulses, thus allowing for effective real-time dose-per-pulse monitoring.

The study compares the effect of one-time administration of nonsteroidal and/or steroidal anti-inflammatory combinations by topical or intramuscular (IM) routes to pigeons with monosodium urate (MSU)-induced arthritis. Forty-five adult domestic pigeons were assigned into nine equal groups: NC, negative control; PC, positive control with arthritis; sham, sham control; T1, meloxicam + hydrocortisone; T2, dexamethasone + piroxicam; T3, meloxicam + dexamethasone; T4, hydrocortisone + piroxicam; T5, dexamethasone + hydrocortisone; T6, meloxicam + piroxicam. Arthritis was also induced in T1 to T6 birds. Meloxicam and dexamethasone were administered by IM injection and the other drugs topically right after the induction of arthritis. Different drug combinations significantly decreased one-leg standing time. Induction of arthritis significantly increased TNF-α and IL-6 levels in synovial fluid and serum corticosterone and epinephrine in the PC group. Administration of drugs to birds of Groups T1 and T5 did not significantly change corticosterone concentration, while all different drug combinations decreased epinephrine level. Drug combinations that demonstrated better analgesic effect more strongly reduced serum epinephrine concentration. Meloxicam + hydrocortisone was the most effective combination in reducing inflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, one-time combination therapy with anti-inflammatory agents was effective in the acute management of inflammatory pain due to MSU-induced arthritis in pigeons, even by the topical route.

Abstract The implementation of new methods of osteoporotic therapy requires tests on animal model. The use of sheep as model has numerous advantages over other animals. The aim of this study was to describe the change in parameters in sheep with osteoporosis induced using steroids and ovariorectomy methods as opposed to the parameters in healthy sheep. The study was performed on female „merinos” breed sheep divided into the three groups: negative control (NC) - healthy animals, positive control (PC) - ovariorectomized animals and steroid control group (SC) - in which methylprednisolone was administered. This paper presents histological and ultrastructural examination with mechanical comparative tests for force/strength values as well as indentation tests of joint cartilage. The obtained results confirm the loss of bone mass associated with mineral composition content in bones, which has an influence on bone strength.

Over the past several years, compelling advances have taken place in ship design three-dimensional product modeling systems. The most modern of these systems are PC-based, possess a single database, have electronic links to NC production equipment, and have interfaces with shipyard planning, production, and materials management. Small shipyards often hesitate to install one of these systems because of constraints such as the frequent need to generate one-off designs, reluctance to change from traditional 2D design, planning and production methods, small IR& D budgets, tight markets, stiff competition, and customers' desires for fast design-production turnaround. Also, the shipyard may choose from a spectrum of design systems in which the 3D product modeling systems are the most complex and expensive. Thus, small shipyards often perceive many disadvantages to purchasing ship design 3D product modeling systems, and believe the disadvantages are not sufficiently offset by advantages. These yards may be surprised to find that, in practice, a number of small shipyards have made a successful conversion to these systems, and several of these yards provide candid insights of actual advantages and disadvantages.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a multi-component dietary protease complex on the growth performance and carcass yields of commercial broiler chickens. A total of 630 Indian River broiler DOCs were considered and assigned to five dietary treatments namely: 1) Positive control (PC), a standard diet with no supplemental protease, 2) Negative control (NC), a diet similar to PC but reduced in CP, digestible EAA, and ME based on supplier’s nutrient matrix recommendation, 3) PC+125 ppm protease (PC+125), 4) NC+125 ppm protease (NC+125), and 5) NC+200 ppm protease (NC+200). The birds were fed experimental diets for 28 days. Body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and survival rate were recorded weekly. On day 28, three birds per treatment were sacrificed for carcass yield analysis. FI was similar among the treatment groups except in the 2nd week where broilers fed PC+125, NC+125, and NC+200 diets had significantly higher (P<0.05) FI than those fed the PC diet. In terms of BW and BWG, there were no differences among the treatment groups at 1st and 2nd weeks, however, at 3rd and 4th weeks, broilers fed the PC+125, NC+125, and NC+200 diets were significantly heavier (P<0.05) than those fed the PC and NC diets. A similar trend was also observed in FCR. Among the carcass yield parameters, the percentage weights of thigh, breast, and heart in birds fed the NC+200 diet were significantly increased (P<0.05) as compared to those fed the NC diet, while results for PC, PC+125, and NC+125 were intermediate between the two treatment groups. Overall, the results of present study demonstrated that the supplementation of protease complex either on a standard or reduced diet may improve the overall production performance of commercial broiler chickens and offers benefits on certain aspects of carcass yield.

Abstract Very low-protein (VLP) diets are beneficial for reducing the nitrogen excretion from swine production, but these diets depress the performance of pigs while supplemented with first four limiting amino acids (FFL; i.e. Lys, Met, Thr and Trp). The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementation of Val and Ile above NRC (2012) levels on performance, thermal radiation and blood metabolites of pigs fed with VLP diets. Three-week-old weaned barrows (n = 40) were assigned to: positive control (PC): normal protein diet; negative control (NC): VLP diet containing FFL at NRC levels; HV: NC with Val above NRC; HI: NC with Ile above NRC; HVI: NC with both Val and Ile above NRC. After 5 weeks of data collection, blood samples were collected. Univariate GLM with Tukey post-hoc test was used to analyze the data (SPSS). Pigs fed with NC had a decreased average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) compared with PC (P< 0.05). HVI pigs had less ADG than PC, but greater ADG than NC (P< 0.05). ADFI of pigs fed with HVI was similar to PC and it was greater than NC (P< 0.05). HVI pigs had a higher thermal radiation than NC (P< 0.05). While HVI pigs had greater blood glucose than PC and NC at baseline (P< 0.05), no differences among these groups were observed on postprandial blood glucose concentration. HVI pigs had less blood triglycerides than PC. All groups increased the blood cholesterol compared with PC (P< 0.05). There were no differences in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) for NC vs. PC; however, pigs fed with HVI reduced the BUN compared with NC (P< 0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of Val and Ile greater than NRC into VLP diets partially restored the performance and fully recovered the ADFI, reduced the blood triglycerides and BUN, and improved the glucose tolerance.

Abstract Lawsonia intracellularis is endemic to swine herds worldwide. Currently, vaccination is one of the few strategies available to mitigate L. intracellularis. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the impact of vaccination on growth performance and disease severity during experimental challenge. Thirty-six L. intracellularis negative barrows were assigned to treatment groups as follows (n = 12/trt): 1) nonvaccinated, L. intracellularis negative (NC); 2) nonvaccinated, L intracellularis challenged (PC); and 3) L. intracellularis challenged, vaccinated (Enterisol® Ileitis, Boehringer Ingelheim) at 1 week postweaning (VAC). On days post inoculation (dpi) 0 (7 weeks post-weaned) PC and VAC pigs were inoculated with L. intracellularis. Individual feed disappearance and BW were recorded weekly and all pigs were euthanized at dpi 21. Post-inoculation, ADG was reduced in PC (P < 0.001) and VAC (P = 0.001) pigs compared with NC pigs. Average daily gain was additionally reduced in PC pigs compared with VAC pigs (P < 0.001). Similarly, ADFI was reduced in PC (P < 0.001) and VAC (P = 0.029) pigs compared with NC pigs, and further reduced in PC pigs compared with VAC pigs (P = 0.032). Overall G:F was reduced in PC pigs compared with NC (P < 0.001) and VAC (P = 0.015) pigs, which did not differ. For antibody response and fecal shedding, NC pigs remained negative. Antibody responses and fecal shedding were lower in VAC pigs compared with PC pigs (P < 0.05). Ileal gross lesion severity was greater in PC pigs compared with VAC (P = 0.018) and NC (P = 0.003) pigs, which did not differ. Similarly, ileal lesion length was greater in PC pigs compared with NC (P = 0.007) and VAC (P = 0.045) pigs. Microscopic lesion severity was greater in PC pigs compared with both PC and VAC pigs (P < 0.05). Taken together, these data characterize the impact L. intracellularis has on growth performance of pigs and highlight the importance of vaccination to prevent disease associated performance losses.

AbstractPolypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/PC) nanocomposites containing various proportions of the organically modified montmorillonite were prepared by extrusion and injection molding process. The morphology of PP/PC nanocomposites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The nanocomposites with 3 or 5 wt% of nanoclay (NC) show a uniform dispersion of the NC as pointed out by two different methods, TEM and XRD. It was shown that the morphology of dispersed phase (PC) is highly dependent on the content of minor phase, which was correlated with the balance of drop breakup and coalescence. The mechanical properties have been investigated by tensile test and Izod impact test. The virgin PP/PC samples showed a reduction in impact strength and elongation at break and up to 50% increase in Young’s modulus by increase in PP content comparing with the pure PP. Investigating the effect of NC and PC content on the mechanical behavior of PP/PC nanocomposites showed increased Young’s modulus and decreased impact strength with increasing PC and NC loading. An obvious ductile to brittle behavior transition at a high content of PC or NC was supported by notched Izod impact strength experiments and SEM results.

Abstract This experiment quantified the impact of an E. coli challenge and evaluated protected benzoic acid (PBA) as the alternative to recover growth performance, diarrhea, and inflammation of weaned pigs. A total of 72 pigs (BW=6.07±0.66kg) were housed in pens (2 pigs/pen) and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments (12 pens/treatment). Treatments included a non-challenged control (NC), a challenged-control experimentally infected with F18 E. coli (PC), and PC plus 0.25% PBA (Novus international St. Charles, MO). The experiment lasted 18 days, with 7 days of acclimation and 11 days post-infection (dpi). Blood samples were collected at 0, 4, and 11 dpi. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. At the end of the experiment (11 dpi), pigs on NC were heavier than those in the PC, whereas pigs fed PBA were intermediate (9.43, 8.22, and 8.75kg, respectively; P = 0.026). For the entire experimental period (-7 to 11 dpi) pigs on the NC had increased ADG compared with PC and PBA (0.196, 0.105, and 0.127kg, respectively; P=0.019). Pigs on the NC had increased ADFI compared with PC, whereas PBA was intermediate (0.244, 0.167, and 0.204kg, respectively; P=0.011). G:F tended to differ among treatments (P=0.070): the NC had the greatest G:F followed by PBA and NC (0.800, 0.565, 0507, respectively). Diarrhea incidence was decreased in the NC compared with PC and PBA (22.9, 44.2, and 52.1%, respectively; P=0.01). Serum acute-phase C reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation, tended to differ among treatments (P=0.076): the PC had the greatest CRP concentration followed by PBA and NC (3,841, 2,243, and 2,106 ng/mL, respectively). In conclusion, the E. coli infection impacted the growth and health of weaned pigs; however, the addition of PBA partially alleviated the negative effects by stimulating feed intake, growth, and decreasing systemic inflammation.

Abstract The study was designed to evaluate if feeding spray dried bovine plasma (SDP) in low Zn diets would maintain similar growth performance compared with a high Zn diet, as an alternative to high levels of supplemental zinc oxide. Pigs (1,548 Camborough F1 female x 800 boar line; PIC Canada) were weaned at 20 ± 1 d of age (body weight: 5.6 ± 0.2 kg), divided within gender, and allotted to a randomized block design using 48 pens in 2 rooms with 31, 32, or 33 pigs per pen. Feeding phases (P) were (P1) d 0-7, (P2) d 7-21, and (P3) d 21-49. Feed treatments were: 1) positive control (PC) with high supplemental zinc (P1, 3000; P2, 2000, and P3 150 ppm); 2) negative control (NC) with low zinc (P1-P3, 150 ppm); 3) NC + 5% SDP P1; and 4) NC + 5% SDP P1, 2.5% SDP P2. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS. Contrast statements were used to test effects of Zn supplementation (PC vs NC) or SDP inclusion in low Zn diets vs the PC or NC diets. Overall, from d 0 to 49, ADFI and ADG was greater (P < 0.01) for pigs fed PC than for NC and SDP treatments. Pigs fed SDP had greater ADG and ADFI than NC pigs (P ≤ 0.02). At d 49, pigs fed the PC high zinc diets weighed 1.6 kg more (P < 0.05) than pigs fed the NC low Zn diets. Supplementation of SDP in low Zn diets increased (P < 0.05) ADFI, ADG, and final BW by 0.55-0.59 kg compared with the NC diets. Supplementation of low zinc diets with SDP improved growth performance but resulted in lower final BW compared with the PC diets containing high zinc.

A 42-day experiment was conducted with 625 1-day-old male Hubbard chickens to evaluate the performance, carcass traits, nitrogen retention and economics of broiler chickens fed low protein and amino acid diets supplemented with different protease sources. Treatments included positive (PC) and negative (NC) controls (PC at 19.3% protein vs NC at 18.8% protein), with NC containing 7% less digestible amino acids. The other three treatment groups were based on the NC diet supplemented with 0.05% Cibenza® DP100 (CB), 0.02% Ronozyme® (RZ) or 0.02% Winzyme pro plus (WZ). Birds fed the PC, CB and WZ diets achieved the heaviest bodyweight compared with those fed the NC diet at end of the experiment. Total feed intake of birds fed the PC diet was higher (P < 0.05) than that of birds fed the NC diet. Feed conversion ratio was numerically significantly (P = 0.005) improved with all tested groups in comparison with NC throughout the experiment. European production index was similar (P > 0.05) among birds fed the PC, NC, RZ or WZ diets. All carcass parameters studied, including dressing, heart, gizzard, giblets, chest meat, thigh meat and abdominal fat percentages, were not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by feeding on the different sources of protease. Broilers fed the PC diet or diets formulated with all protease sources had higher (P < 0.05) nitrogen retention than did birds fed the NC diet. The supplementation of protease to low-protein and low-amino acid diets resulted in higher profit margin in broilers. It is concluded that supplementing exogenous protease to broiler diets containing low protein and amino acids improved the growth performance, feed utilisation, carcass traits, nitrogen retention and net returns of broiler chickens.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of feather meal (FM) in diets supplemented with protease for meat-type quails, on performance from eight to 21 days and from eight to 35 days of age and on carcass yield cuts and economic profitability from eight to 35 days of age. A total of 360 male, meat-type quails, were allotted to a completely randomized design, in a factorial 3 x 3 arrangement (three diets and three FM levels of inclusion), with four replicates of 10 quails per experimental unit. The diets evaluated were positive control (PC) + 0% FM, PC + 5% FM, PC + 10% FM, negative control (NC) + 0% FM, NC + 5% FM, NC + 10% FM, NC + 0% FM + protease, NC + 5% FM + protease and NC + 10% FM + protease. The NC diet was formulated with a reduction in crude protein and amino acids, compared to the PC diet. There was an effect (p < 0.05) of the inclusion of FM in diets on feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio, from eight to 21 and from eight to 35 days of age. There was a significant effect (p < 0.05) of FM inclusion on the live weight of 35-day-old quails. The inclusion of FM impairs meat-type quails’ performance at all ages evaluated. NC diets, with and without protease, worsen the performance of birds compared to PC diets. Better economic profitability is observed for up to 5% inclusion of feather meal in positive control diets.

Objective. To evaluate the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of self-adhesive resin (SA) cement on leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic using silane or universal adhesive.Materials and Methods. Ceramic blocks were etched with 9.5% hydrofluoric acid and divided into three groups (n=16): (1) negative control (NC) without treatment; (2) Single Bond Universal (SBU); (3) RelyX Ceramic Primer as positive control (PC). RelyX Unicem resin cement was light-cured, andμSBS was evaluated with/without thermocycling. TheμSBS was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. The fractured surfaces were examined using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Results. Without thermocycling,μSBS was highest for PC (30.50 MPa ± 3.40), followed by SBU (27.33 MPa ± 2.81) and NC (20.18 MPa ± 2.01) (P<0.05). Thermocycling significantly reducedμSBS in SBU (22.49 MPa ± 4.11) (P<0.05), but not in NC (20.68 MPa ± 4.60) and PC (28.77 MPa ± 3.52) (P>0.05). PC and NC predominantly fractured by cohesive failure within the ceramic and mixed failure, respectively.Conclusion. SBU treatment improvesμSBS between SA cement and glass ceramics, but to a lower value than PC, and the improvement is eradicated by thermocycling. NC exhibited the lowestμSBS, which remained unchanged after thermocycling.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation and excessive oxidative stress are the main mechanisms causing liver fibrosis. It releases anti-inflammatory cytokines, namely, interleukin 6 (IL-6), nitric oxide, and malondialdehyde (MDA). Curcumin acts as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifibrotic. AIM: This study is aimed to analyze differences in IL-6 expression and MDA levels in (Deutschland, Denken, and Yoken) DDY mice with liver fibrosis after common bile duct ligation between the curcumin-treated and control groups. METHODS: This research is an experimental study with a post-test-only control group design. Seventy-five male DDY mice 20–30g were used in this study (n = 5). Mice were randomly divided into five groups, each consisting of 15 mice. The first group healthy control (HC) was the HC group given phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution and did not perform the CBDL. The second group negative control (NC) was a NC group given PBS solution and completed the CBDL. The third group positive control (PC) was a PC group given oral ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and performed CBDL. The fourth group (P1) was assigned oral curcumin and performed the CBDL. The fifth group (P2) was given oral curcumin and UDCA and performed the CBDL. Seven, fourteen, and 21 days after ligation, liver samples were taken to examine IL-6 expression and MDA levels. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the NC and PC groups (p = 0.00), NC and P1 (p = 0.00), NC with P2 (p = 0.00), PC with P1 (p = 0.04), PC with P2 (p = 0.04), on day 21 between the NC and PC groups (p = 0.00), NC with P1 (p = 0.00), and PC with P2 (p = 0.00). Statistical analysis of the comparison of MDA levels on days 7 and 14 found no significant difference. On day 21, there was a substantial difference between the NC group and P1 (p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: This study concluded that curcumin effectively reduced IL-6 expression and MDA levels in liver fibrosis.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of OAs and EOs on growth performance, serum biochemistry, antioxidant enzyme activities, intestinal morphology, and digestive enzyme activities to replace AGP in broilers. Six hundred one-day-old broilers were allotted to five treatments with six replicates: (1) negative control (NC; basal diet); (2) positive control (PC; NC + 50 mg/kg bacitracin methylene disalicylate); (3) organic acids (OA; NC + 2000 mg/kg OA); (4) essential oils (EO; NC + 300 mg/kg EO); and (5) OA + EO (NC + 2000 mg/kg OA + 300 mg/kg EO). In the starter phase, the PC, EO, and OA + EO groups had a significantly lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the NC group. While the final body weight (BW) of broilers fed OAs was similar compared to broilers fed PC (p > 0.1), the FCR of the OA group tended to be lower than the PC group on D 42 (p = 0.074). The OA group had the higher serum GLOB:ALB (albumin) and ileal villus height and crypt depth (VH:CD) ratios compared to the EO group. Thus, the supplementation of EOs and OAs could substitute AGP in the starter and finisher phase, respectively.

Abstract Very low protein (VLP) diets decrease the nitrogen excretion from pigs, but these diets depress the performance even when the first four limiting amino acids (FFL; i.e. Lys, Met, Thr and Trp) are added. Supplementation of Val above and Ile at NRC (2012) levels has shown promising effects on performance of pigs fed with VLP diets. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a mixture of Val above and Ile at NRC levels on growth and gut microbiota in pigs fed with VLP diets. Three-week-old, weaned piglets (n = 40) were assigned to: 1) positive control (PC): normal protein diet; 2) negative control (NC): VLP diet with FFL at NRC levels; 3) VA: NC with Val above NRC; 4) IL: NC with Ile at NRC level; 5) VAIL: NC with Val above and Ile at NRC levels. Following 5 weeks of data collection, colon contents were collected. The data were analyzed by GLM procedure followed a t-test with Benjamini-Hochberg correction (SPSS). Pigs fed with NC had decreased average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI), compared with PC (P< 0.05). VAIL had less ADG than PC, but that tended to have greater ADG than NC (P< 0.1). Further, VAIL had a similar ADFI as PC (P>0.05) and tended to have greater ADFI than NC (P< 0.1). Compared with PC and NC, pigs fed with VAIL had a higher thermal radiation (P< 0.05). Relative to PC, the colon content of NC was enriched in Pasteurellaceae while those fed with VAIL had a greater abundance of Bacillus, Brevibacillus, Enterococcus, Actinobacteria, which might contribute to improved performance of pigs fed with VAIL diets. Overall, supplementation of a mixture of Val greater than NRC and Ile at NRC into the VLP diets partially improved the performance, which is likely linked with alterations in gut microbiota composition.

Two studies were conducted to determine the impact of an absorption enhancer containing a combination of lysophospholipids, monoglycerides and synthetic emulsifiers (LEX) on apparent ileal digestibility, metabolizable energy (ME), and growth performance of growing pigs. In the digestibility study, 12 male crossbred [Duroc x (Large White x Landrace)] pigs with an initial body weight (BW) of 30 kg were randomly allocated to two dietary treatments: (1) a positive control (PC) receiving standard diets formulated to 3100 kcal ME/kg, and (2) a negative control formulated with −100 kcal ME/kg and −2.5% AA content vs. PC and supplemented with LEX at 500 g/t. Apparent ileal digestibility of essential AA was significantly increased for lysine, methionine, threonine, histidine, isoleucine and phenylalanine in the LEX treatment (p < 0.05). Average uplift in AA digestibility as a percent of the PC was +1.88%; with greatest improvement for histidine (+4.22%). LEX supplementation effectively compensated energy deficiency of low-density diet and provided additional ME improvement compared to the PC diet (p < 0.05). A second study was conducted to evaluate LEX dose response on the growth performance of pigs fed a low nutrient density diet. Total 450 cross-bred pigs (240 males (castrated) and 210 females) [Duroc x (Large White x Landrace)] with an average initial BW of 7.19 kg were randomly allocated into 4 dietary treatments: (1) a positive control (PC) formulated with standard specifications, (2) a negative control formulated with −100 kcal ME/kg and −2.5% AA content vs. the PC (NC), (3) NC + LEX at 250 g/t (NC + 250) and (4) NC + LEX at 500 g/t (NC + 500). Results showed significant improvement with LEX supplementation on the final BW, average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of pigs of >50 kg body weight. Across the study, NC + 500 significantly increased ADG vs. PC and NC, and significantly reduced FCR compared to all other treatments. FCR of negative control diets improved by 9 and 15 points with the supplementation of 250 g/t and 500 g/t of LEX, respectively (p < 0.05). FCR in the NC + 250 diet was statistically similar vs. PC, which was significantly reduced compared to the NC. Taken together, these studies demonstrate that the addition of an absorption enhancer containing a combination of lysophospholipids, monoglycerides and synthetic emulsifiers can improve growth performance in growing pigs, driven by increased nutrient digestibility and retention.

A total of 180, 4-week-old crossbred weaning piglets ((Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc; 6.67 ± 1.40 kg) were used in a 42 day experiment to evaluate the effect of dietary probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum BG0001) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood profile, fecal microbiota, and noxious gas emission. All pigs were randomly allotted to one of four treatment diets in a completely randomized block design. Each treatment had nine replicates with five pigs/pen (mixed sex) Designated dietary treatments were as: (1) basal diet (NC), (2) NC + 0.2% antibiotics (chlortetracycline) (PC), (3) NC + 0.1% L. plantarum BG0001 (Lactobacillus plantarum BG0001) (NC1), (4) NC + 0.2% L. plantarum BG0001 (NC2). On d 42, BW and G:F were lower (p < 0.05) in pigs fed NC diet compared with PC diet and probiotic diets. Throughout this experiment, the average daily gain increased (p < 0.05) in pigs when fed with PC and probiotic diets than the NC diet. The average daily feed intake was higher (p < 0.05) in pigs fed PC diet during day 0–7 and 22–42, and probiotic diets during day 0–7 compared with NC diet, respectively. The Lactobacillus count was increased and Escherichia coli count was decreased (p < 0.05) in the fecal microbiota of pigs fed probiotic diets, and E. coli were decreased (p < 0.05) when fed a PC diet compared with the NC diet on day 21. Moreover, the apparent total tract nutrient digestibility, blood profile, and the concentration of noxious gas emission had no negative effects by the probiotic treatments. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with L. plantarum BG0001 significantly improved the growth performance, increased fecal Lactobacillus, and decreased E. coli counts in weaning pigs.

The present study aimed at assessing the efficiency of thyme essential oil (TEO) as an alternative to antibiotics for improving the productive performance and serum metabolic profile of male rabbits. A total of one hundred and fifty 70-day-old male Californian rabbits were assigned to five dietary treatments, including a basal diet as a negative control (NC), a basal diet supplemented with an antibiotic as a positive control (PC), and a basal diet supplemented with 60, 120, or 180 mg/kg of TEO. The experiment period lasted for 60 days. Supplementation of TEO levels significantly (P < 0.01) increased daily body weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio of male Californian rabbits compared to NC and PC groups. Similarly, the TEO remarkably enhanced the semen characteristics of rabbits compared to NC and PC groups. Supplementation of TEO significantly decreased aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, urea, and creatinine compared with NC and PC groups. Supplementation with TEO increased serum testosterone concentration compared to NC and PC treatments. Our data demonstrate that TEO levels up to 180 mg/kg can play a major role as an alternative to dietary antibiotics, in improving the productive performance, semen quality, testosterone levels, and the kidney and liver functions in California male rabbits.

Abstract This research was conducted to determine effects of supplementation and implanting on BW gain by steers grazing mixed grass prairie (n = 12 pastures, 19.9 ± 0.7 ha) in northwest Oklahoma. Three main plot treatments were: 1) Negative Control (NC), no supplementation, 2) Positive Control (PC), supplemented with DDGS cubes, 1.8 kg/steer on alternate days in late summer, 3) High Supplement (HS), 1/3 increase in stocking rate with 0.75% BW supplemental DDGS cubes all season. Steers (n = 125, BW = 223.1 ± 23.2 kg) were stocked at 2.2 ha/steer for PC and NC, 1.3 ha/steer for HS. Grazing was from May 17 – September 27 (132 d). All steers were implanted with 200 mg progesterone and 20 mg estradiol benzoate (SYN, Synonvex S, Zoetis Animal Health) on May 17. On July 18 three reimplant treatments were applied: 1) no reimplant; 2) SYN; or 3) 40 mg trenbolone acetate and 8 mg estradiol (Revalor G, Merck Animal Health). Data were analyzed using the PROC MIXED in SAS as a split-plot experimental design. In early summer HS had 0.26 kg greater (P < 0.01) ADG than NC and PC. Late summer gains of PC were 0.33 kg/d more (P ≤ 0.01) than NC; and HS gained 0.49 and 0.16 kg/day more (P ≤ 0.04) than NC and PC, respectively. Gain per hectare for PC (46 kg/ha) were greater (P < 0.01) than NC (35 kg/ha) and more than doubled (P < 0.01) with HS (89 kg/ha). Reimplanting had no effect on ADG (P ≥ 0.28). Late season supplementation with PC resulted in supplemental efficiency of 2.7 kg supplement/kg added gain compared with NC. Increased stocking rates with season long supplementation in HS resulted in supplemental efficiency of 3.8 kg supplement/kg added gain per hectare. Based on these data, a 100% DDGS cube is an effective supplement option to increase BW gain during the late summer or increase carrying capacity and gain during the summer grazing period in northwestern Oklahoma.

The current experiment was designed to estimate the comparative efficacy of selected phytobiotics Persicaria odorata leaf meal (POLM) and Piper betle leaf meal (PBLM) with halquinol, and tetracycline in broiler chickens. The 150-day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to five dietary groups. The dietary supplementation groups were the basal diet (BD), which served as the negative control (NC), and BD + 0.2 g/kg tetracycline, which served as the positive control (PC); BD + 0.03 g/kg halquinol (HAL), BD + 8 g/kg POLM (Po8), and BD + 4 g/kg PBLM (Pb4) were the treatment groups. Growth performance, gut morphology, ileal digestibility, and cecal microbiota composition were measured. On day 21, the body weight gain (BWG) was enhanced (p < 0.05) in the broiler chickens fed on phytobiotics (Po8 and Pb4) relative to the NC group, however, on day 42 and in terms of overall growth performance, BWG was enhanced (p < 0.05 in diets (Po8, Pb4, HAL and PC) in comparison with the NC group. Conversely, feed conversion ratio (FCR) was recorded reduced (p < 0.05) in Pb4, Po8, HAL, and PC group in comparison with the NC group. Supplementation of phytobiotics (Po8 and Pb4), HAL and PC, positively improved the gut morphology compared to the NC group. Furthermore, the maximum (p < 0.05) villus height (VH) in duodenum and jejunum was observed in broilers fed on diet Pb4. Supplementation of phytobiotics, HAL and PC, improved (p < 0.05) the digestibility of dry matter (DM) (except for HAL), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), and ash compared to the NC group. Dietary supplementation of phytobiotics (Po8 and Pb4), HAL and PC, significantly reduced the E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus (except for HAL) counts compared to the NC group. However, supplementation of Pb4 resulted in significantly decreased total anaerobic bacteria and Clostridium spp. counts compared to the NC group. In addition, supplementation of phytobiotics significantly increased the Lactobacillus count compared to HAL, PC, and NC groups. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of phytobiotics improved the gut morphology, positively modulated and maintained the dynamics of cecal microbiota with enhanced nutrient digestibility, thus, increased the growth performance. Based on current results, phytobiotics could be used as an alternative to AGPs for sustainable broiler chicken production.

The effects of feeding different postbiotics on growth performance, carcass yield, intestinal morphology, gut microbiota, immune status, and growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) gene expression in broilers under heat stress were assessed in this study. A total of 252 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were randomly assigned in cages in identical environmentally controlled chambers. During the starter period from 1 to 21 days, all the birds were fed the same basal diet. On day 22, the birds were weighed and randomly divided into six treatment groups and exposed to cyclic high temperature at 36 ± 1 °C for 3 h per day from 11:00 to 14:00 until the end of the experiment. From day 22 to 42 (finisher period), an equal number of birds were subjected to one of the following diets: NC (negative control) basal diet; PC (positive control) basal diet + 0.02% oxytetracycline; or AA (ascorbic acid) basal diet + 0.02% ascorbic acid. The other three groups (RI11, RS5 and UL4) were basal diet + 0.3% different postbiotics (produced from different Lactobacillus plantarum strains, and defined as RI11, RS5 and UL4, respectively). The results demonstrated that birds fed RI11 diets had significantly higher final body weight, total weight gain and average daily gain than the birds that received the NC, PC and AA treatments. The feed conversion ratio was significantly higher in the RI11 group compared with the other groups. Carcass parameters were not affected by the postbiotic-supplemented diet. Postbiotic supplementation improved villi height significantly in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum compared to the NC, PC and AA treatments. The crypt depth of the duodenum and ileum was significantly higher in NC group compared to other treatment groups except RI11 in duodenum, and UL4 in ileum was not different with NC groups. The villus height to crypt depth ratio of duodenum and ileum was significantly higher for the postbiotic treatment groups and AA than the PC and NC treatment groups. The postbiotic RI11 group recorded significantly higher caecum total bacteria and Lactobacillus count and lower Salmonella count compared to the NC and PC treatment groups. The Bifidobacterium population in the NC group was significantly lower compared to the other treatment groups. The postbiotic (RI11, RS5 and UL4) and AA treatment groups showed lower Enterobacteriaceae and E. coli counts and caecal pH than the NC and PC treatment groups. The plasma immunoglobulin M (IgM) level was significantly higher in the birds receiving postbiotic RI11 than those receiving other treatments. The plasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) level was higher in the RI11 treatment group than in the NC, AA and RS5 groups. The plasma immunoglobulin A (IgA) level was not affected by postbiotic supplements. The hepatic GHR mRNA expression level was significantly increased in birds fed postbiotics RI11, RS5 and UL4, AA and PC compared to the NC-fed birds. Postbiotic RI11 led to significantly higher hepatic IGF-1 mRNA expression level compared to the NC, PC, and AA treatments. Mortality was numerically lesser in the postbiotic treatment groups, but not significantly different among all the treatments. In conclusion, among the postbiotics applied in the current study as compared with NC, PC and AA, RI11 could be used as a potential alternative antibiotic growth promoter and anti-stress treatment in the poultry industry.

This experiment evaluated the effects of supplemental protease in maize-based diets formulated with reduced density of digestible amino acids (dAA) on net energy (NE) utilisation and nutrient digestibility in broilers. A total of 312, one-day-old, male broilers (Ross 308) were randomly distributed into 24 floor pens and fed one of three treatments, with eight pen replicates per treatment throughout the starter (1 to 14 d of age) and grower (15 to 28 d of age) phases. Dietary treatments consisted of a positive control (PC) reference diet, a negative control diet (NC; dAA density 60 g/kg less than PC diet), and a NC diet with supplemental protease (200 mg/kg). All diets contained supplemental phytase (200 mg/kg) and xylanase (200 mg/kg). The reduction in dAA density between the PC and NC did not affect (P>0.05) NE, but protease supplementation in the NC diet increased (P<0.05) NE by 0.27 MJ/kg, compared with those receiving the NC diet without protease. The reduction in dAA for broilers fed the NC and PC diets did not (P>0.05) affect nitrogen, starch, or DE in the jejunum or ileum. Likewise, no differences (P>0.05) in jejunal (nitrogen, starch, and DE) and ileal (starch and DE) digestibility values were observed between those offered the NC diets without or with protease, but a small difference (P<0.05) in ileal nitrogen digestibility was observed.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) continues to present major challenges to the poultry industry, and the etiologic agent Clostridium perfringens is the fourth leading cause of bacterially-induced food- borne illnesses in the US. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of a probiotic during naturally occurring NE. On day of hatch, 1080 Cobb 500 male broilers were randomly allocated to three groups (12 replicate pens/treatment, 30 birds/pen) including 1) negative control (NC): corn-soybean meal diet; 2) positive control (PC): NC + 20 mg virginiamycin/kg diet (0.450 kg Stafac®20/ton); and 3) NC + PrimaLac (1.36 and 0.91 kg/ton from 1–21 and 22–42 days, respectively). One day (d) post placement, all birds were challenged by a commercial live oocyst coccidia vaccine as a predisposing factor to NE. Body weight and feed intake were measured at the onset of NE (d 8) and end of each feeding phase. On d 8, small intestines of two birds/pen were examined for NE lesions, and jejunum samples from one bird were collected for mRNA gene expression analysis of tight junction proteins, cytokines, and nutrient transporters. Data were analyzed using the Jump (JMP) software and significance between treatments identified by LSD (P < 0.05). Compared to NC, supplementation of probiotic reduced d 1–42 mortality; however, PC was the only group with significantly lower mortality. Despite significantly improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) in PC and probiotic groups during d 1–42, average daily gain was only higher in PC (77.69 g/bird) compared with NC (74.99 g/bird). Furthermore, probiotic and PC groups had significantly reduced lesion scores in the duodenum and jejunum compared to NC. Expression of claudin-3 was higher, while expression of zonula occluden-2 tended (P = 0.06) to be higher in probiotic-supplemented birds compared to NC. Moreover, birds fed the probiotic diet had significantly higher expression of IL-10, IL-17, AMPK-α1, and SGLT1 mRNA compared to NC birds. The expression of PepT1 was higher for the probiotic-supplemented group compared to PC. IFN-γ expression was lower in PC compared to NC, while there was no difference between probiotic and NC. There were no differences in gene expression of sIgA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-22 among treatments. Collectively, these data indicate that in a naturally occurring NE model, supplementation of a probiotic helps to improve FCR and reduce lesions, potentially due to the improvements in mRNA expression of tight junctions, cytokines, and nutrient transporters.

Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary β-glucan supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood profiles, and fecal characteristics in weaner pigs. A total of 140 weaner pigs [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] with an average body weight of 6.37±1.14 kg were allotted to one of the following dietary treatments: 1) negative control (NC, basal diet); 2) positive control (PC, basal diet supplemented with 39 ppm Tiamulin); 3) basal diet supplemented with 0.1% β-glucan (G1); 4) basal diet supplemented with 0.2% β-glucan (G2). During days 22 to 42 and 1 to 42, pigs offered PC and G2 diets grew faster than those offered NC diet (P<0.05). Additionally, during the same periods, pigs fed G2 and PC diets exhibited improved gain:feed ratio compared to pigs receiving NC and G1 diets (P<0.05). Pigs fed G2 diet exhibited higher coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility of dry matter than those fed NC diet (P<0.05). There were no differences on blood profiles, fecal scores, fecal moisture, and fecal pH (P>0.05). Fecal lactic acid bacteria counts in G2 treatment were higher compared with PC and NC treatments (P<0.05). Coliform bacteria concentrations were decreased in pigs fed PC and G2 diets compared with those fed NC diet (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of the current study indicate that dietary supplementation of 0.2% β-glucan can improve growth performance and dry matter digestibility, increase fecal lactic acid bacteria concentration but decrease fecal coliform bacteria concentration in weaner pigs.
