Streszczenie:

This mixed method case study examines the relationship between the authentic leadership of the pastor of Warsaw Community Church and his effectiveness as a leader in achieving the collective goals of the church from the perspective of his leadership team and direct reports. It examines how his level of authenticity affects the followers' desire to be a part of that authentic relationship. By using a quantitative method study the research assessed the following: (a) the authenticity of the pastor through self-assessment and follower feedback; (b) the leadership effectiveness of the pastor through self-assessment and follower feedback. The qualitative interview portion of the study provides insight and focus into how the level of the pastor's authenticity impacts his leadership effectiveness and the level of authentic relationship between the pastor and his followers.

The 12 participants took a combined Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) and Lewis Pastoral Leadership Inventory (LPLI) online survey. Following the online survey, the interviews with the Founding Pastor's followers, three direct reports, the co-senior pastor and one chosen by the co-senior pastor, added to a richer understanding of the context and relationships.

Streszczenie:

This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of female ministers serving in pastoral leadership within the church. This study involved selecting 12 female pastors actively serving congregations within the Richmond, Virginia, Tri-Cities area. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the details of living and serving as a female pastoral leader, and the inner motivations to achieve top-tier leadership and experiences with female-to-female mentorship. The female pastoral leaders participated in a three-tier face-to-face interview process. Prior to conducting the core research, a pilot study of two female pastoral participants tested the alignment of research questions and interview process. Including the pilot study and core research, the total number of participants was 14. The 12 participant interview transcripts were collected as data and analyzed using NVivo 10® qualitative software. Five themes emerged from the collected data: a) pastoral leadership: personal calling and motivations, b) preparedness: education and training, c) positive support: family, church, and community, d) passion: reaching and helping people, and e) preceptor: mentoring and connections with other female ministers. Five implications resulted from the study. Female pastoral leaders demonstrate self-determination and motivation. They obtain professional degrees and seminary training. Positive support from family, church, and community are major components for women achieving pastoral leadership. Female pastors have a passion for reaching people. Women in pastoral leadership need mentors and need to share their stories with other women who aspire to lead.

Streszczenie:
As the poverty rate continues to rise, many individuals seek assistance to help meet basic needs. Previous research has indicated that churches provide a social safety net for those in need, yet some churches choose not to become human service providers. The purpose of this multicase study was to explore how pastoral transformational leadership influences a church's decision to become a provider of human services among African American pastors and churches. Transformational leadership provided the theoretical framework for this study. The purposeful sample included bounded systems of 5 pastors and their respective churches. Each case was bound by race, location, and denomination. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used as a tool to identify each pastor's leadership style, and interviews were used to determine how the church becomes a human service provider. Interviews were transcribed, inductively coded, and analyzed to identify recurring themes. The results of this research indicated that the transformational pastor is influential in all aspects of the church's human service initiatives. The transformational pastor plays a key role in determining whether the church becomes involved in human service initiatives, and he or she remains involved throughout initiation, implementation, and sustainability. Findings from this study may influence pastoral leadership training and provide a framework for churches and communities who wish to help meet the social needs in their communities. If churches consistently address poverty-related issues, they can address the underlying problems associated with it. This can result in a decrease in the poverty rate over time. This contribution can potentially help decrease the rate of poverty in the community.

Streszczenie:
Through a qualitative study utilizing in-depth interviews, practitioner opinion was gathered regarding how Christian institutions of higher education, primarily Baptist seminaries, may better utilize formal and continuing education to prepare clergy for pastoral leadership. The sample of ten subjects for this study, drawn from the 550 active senior pastors in the Dallas Baptist Association and the Kauf-Van Baptist Association, was selected based on a maximum variation sampling method. The intention was to provide a better understanding of the leadership skills required by senior pastors, to help develop pastoral ministries curriculum and to assess the potential effectiveness of continuing education for pastoral leadership. The subjects indicated that the formal degree program of their seminary did equip them with the basic knowledge needed for pastoral leadership but it did not provide them in sufficiency with the necessary, practical skills for pastoral leadership. The pattern that emerged from the data indicates that, overall, seminaries are providing a quality education in preparing pastors for the ministry in their formal degree plans. However, seminaries may have opportunities to be of further service and to gain a competitive advantage vis a vis other seminaries by enhancing and expanding their continuing education programs.

Streszczenie:

The purpose of the current study was to understand the ways that heads of evangelical Christian schools exercise pastoral leadership in order to enrich the culture and community of their schools, promote student outcomes, and enhance the Christian ethos of their institutions. The current study filled the gap in previous literature through a qualitative multiple case study method examining and describing the means and modes by which three heads of evangelical Christian schools led their school communities, as perceived by the heads, board members, senior leaders, faculty members, students, and parents within the school. What emerged from the research is that the heads provided pastoral leadership for their schools through: (a) proclaiming God’s word–communicating the mission, vision, and values of the school’s distinctively-Christian character to the community, living those values incarnationally, and connecting Scripture to the daily context of the school; (b) demonstrating genuine pastoral soul care and concern for staff, students, and parents, care that connected school family members with the school and allowed them to internalize and reflect school values themselves; and, (c) equipping senior leaders, faculty, students, and parents to serve the school community and each other, stewarding the resources of the school. The heads’ pastoral leadership created cultures of authentic Christian care and community, flourishing climates in which faculty felt free to collaborate, work as a team, and share craft knowledge. Students felt cared for and safe to take academic risks, ask questions, and try harder, all of which provided healthy media for learning. Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:

This study was an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of six world-renowned, "five-fold apostolic" leaders--three from a Pentecostal/charismatic sample population and three from a Protestant/evangelical sample population. A series of lengthy, semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with all the leaders, who related their life/leadership development stories and then reflected at length on the nature of apostolic leadership. IPA research methodology was then used to explore the emergent themes across the interview data for the purpose of articulating the "essence" of the phenomenon. The emergent themes/essence was then examined in relation to its possible correlations within leadership theory. Two meta-themes emerged from the data: an overall aptitude for "wise master building" that all the leaders possessed and the various, more particular aptitudes that were possessed by each individual leader--aptitudes within the overall aptitude, so to speak. Eighteen common subthemes concerning their development and leadership practices also emerged, which were divided into six sub-thematic clusters related to: calling, power, learning, building, equipping, and focus. These were analyzed in conjunction with leadership theory as well. Strong elements of charismatic, transformational, and "movemental" leadership emerged from within the phenomenon. These were discussed, along with the tension between leading movements versus leading institutions/organizations. Complexity leadership theory was then posited as a possible bridge between the two. Some of the possible implications for ministerial practitioners were discussed as well, including: the distinction between apostolic leadership and traditional understandings of pastoral leadership, the generalizablity of the research findings within a North American ministerial context, and the strong similarities between the apostolic leadership practices of both sample populations. Numerous recommendations were also provided for future research into five-fold apostolic leadership in conjunction with leadership theory and practice, including: continued and more extensive dialogue between leadership, theology, and the social sciences in relation to the phenomenon, continued utilization of the IPA research methodology in the service of both leadership and ministry, continued consideration of complexity leadership theory in conjunction with apostolic and "movemental" leadership and, finally, continued exploration into the possibility of the five-fold leadership paradigm informing general leadership theory and practice across all domains. Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis is to propose transformational leadership a new pastoral model for South Korean churches. It is argued that authoritarian charismatic leadership has contributed to church growth but, as Korea is changing into a pluralistic society, it has not respond to properly the needs of Koran Christians. So transformational leadership being characterized as both charismatic (visionary) and democratic (participant) is considered as a new alternative since it can meet their new demands for the leadership, which is both effectiveness in evangelism and appropriateness for new changed socio-cultural milieu. Main focus of attention of this thesis is on disclosing the way in which the nature of leadership has to do with Korean religion, culture, and theology. To deal with them the salient features of transformational leadership is first examined in the three dimensions: culture (Confucianism), philosophy (philosophy of life of Koreans), and theology (theology of Korean churches). Then its implication in biblical theology is discussed, which is followed by case studies empirically. In the process it is revealed that transformational leadership can be applicable to Korean churches which, in turn, can give rise to continual church growth and respond to the needs of the times properly.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The purpose of this project is to promote transformative change within a local church by establishing an ethos of mutuality built upon mutually shared religious beliefs rather than shared culture or age. The pastor of a predominantly African-American church of approximately two hundred members located in the City of Pensacola in the panhandle of Florida observed that there was no perceived cooperative and collaborative exchange between those who shared a culture (individuals bound together with certain beliefs, interests, and culture) or those who were from the same generation within the church. The church being studied is an urban inner-city ministry comprised of 71 % adults and 29% youths. Culturally, the differences among members are more geographical in their origin than racial. Pensacola, a city with a fluid population, attracts people from different communities within the nation. Utilizing the concepts of task competence, transactional commitment, and transformative consciousness (consistent mental awareness of transformative praxis) for the pastor and the membership, this project addresses transformative change (ministry involvement, organizational commitment, and membership retention) as well as attitudes, behaviors, and actions within the local church. The project includes the development of a four-lesson series that addresses the idea of mutuality (embracing shared core beliefs and ideas). The project enrolled twenty-one people representing each ministry subgroup within the church. The group completed a pre-test and post-test (questionnaire) and participated in all group session activities designed to develop mutuality in the areas of core shared beliefs such as spiritual growth, and the church's direction of ministry, vision, and mission. The effectiveness of the lesson plan series was evaluated based on increased unity, behavioral attitudes towards each other, and praxis in the ministry. The community known as the Greater True Vine Missionary Baptist Church of Pensacola, Florida is the project's primary focus. The hoped for outcome of the project was to create greater unity and organizational commitment among the church's members as a result of their renewed focus on their shared core religious beliefs.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The study is an exploration of pastoral leadership from the perspectives of members of the congregation within an Australian Chinese congregational church. The congregational form of church government is one of the governing structures within the Protestant churches. This kind of church operates under a democratic voting system in which each member of the congregation has an equal voice regarding church administration. Most Australian Chinese congregational churches consist of different generations of Chinese Christians. Research indicates that Chinese Australians’ length of residence in Australia is closely linked to their identification with Australian culture. As such, the values, beliefs and attitudes of different generations of Chinese Christians might be different as a result of acculturation. These generational differences will in turn affect the decision making processes of church administration and the approaches to pastoral leadership of the senior pastor. In the past, issues of pastoral leadership have mainly been discussed from theological perspectives. Nowadays, studies of pastoral leadership have been more varied. However, there is still relatively little scholarly empirical research concerning pastoral leadership in a congregational church setting, especially from an intergenerational perspective. In this study, four dimensions of pastoral leadership are identified, namely the personal, organisational, religious and cultural dimensions. The epistemology and theoretical perspective governing the research study is constructionism and interpretivism respectively. Case study has been employed as the methodology. The strategies of data collection include questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, direct observation and document analysis. Rich data is analysed by using the framework of Spencer, Ritchie and O’Connor (2003). The findings of the research revealed differing perceptions among different generations of Australian-Chinese Christians about the pastoral leadership of the senior pastor within an Australian Chinese congregational church. Differences in the perceptions about the pastoral leadership of the senior pastor were also found between groups of lay leaders and church members. Results indicated that a variety of leadership approaches were used by church pastors when they were dealing with different generations of Australian-Chinese Christians in the church. The findings identified the personal characteristics of the senior pastor as the most influential factor in the pastor’s leadership effectiveness, with the organisational, religious and cultural factors also perceived to influence the leadership effectiveness of the senior pastor within the research context. The research presents a conceptual framework for the exploration of pastoral leadership which may be useful for further research. This framework draws attention to the four dimensions of pastoral leadership, namely the personal, organisational, religious and cultural dimensions. The research findings suggest that attention given to these dimensions may enhance both the leadership of church pastors and the growth and development of churches in similar contexts.

Streszczenie:

In seminary education (other than perhaps in a Catholic seminary), the concept of the dark night is rarely examined, if ever. Therefore, a seminary-trained Protestant pastor may well enter into the dark night of the soul without any warning and without any understanding about what is happening. Unfortunately, the pastor who has never heard of this phenomenon may discern this gracious work of God in his or her life as a personal mental problem, such as a form of depression, or even a spiritual failure on their part. Thus the pastor may enter into a crisis of faith in their pastoral service and thereby miss the benefit of the experience.

The modern Christian psychologists researched in this study fail to answer the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” The biblical theology presented by Saint John of the Cross does answer that question, providing a sufficient and satisfying understanding of why troubles do indeed arise in everyone’s life. This researcher’s hypothesis is that many pastors are largely unaware of the teachings of Saint John of the Cross and are very unaware of the biblical theology of the purpose of sorrow and suffering. Thus when sorrow and suffering come into their lives and ministry, their leadership effectiveness in pastoral ministry is negatively affected. This study attempts to validate that hypothesis.

Streszczenie:
he thesis argues that the crisis of pastoral authority and leadership in the Korean Church has come about because of authoritarianism. Authoritarianism pervades Korean pastoral leadership. It causes many problems of dysfunction in the Korean Church. Authoritarianism in the Korean pastoral leadership has been influenced by elements of Korean culture such as Shamanism and Confucianism, military culture and the Korean Christian heritage. While authority in these cultures is also explored and encouraged in this thesis, it is authoritarianism, usurping the place of authority, which has spread to the present Korean pastoral leadership. Authority, which in itself is neither good nor bad, can become authoritarianism, which is bad for both sides. It is unfortunate that authority itself is often misunderstood as authoritarianism. There will be no hope or healthy future for the church which has an authoritarian attitude or cast of mind. Therefore authoritarianism should be rooted out of the Korean pastoral leadership. When it goes, it leaves room for authority to take its place; where there is authority, there is an authoritative leadership. The author suggests a "leadership of biunf as an authoritative leadership; bium, meaning emptying or getting rid of, implies preparation for fulfilment. The target of bium, of course, is "authoritarianism."

Streszczenie:
This thesis is a piece of practitioner research located in the context of the author’s practice as Tutor in Pastoral Studies at Regent’s Park College. It is written from the context of change, both from denominational reviews, university restructuring and government funding and from wider changes in theological education and arises from a sense of dissatisfaction that recent debates have tended to separate out a discussion about the preparation for ministry from an understanding of ministry itself. The thesis explores ideas of ministry and leadership, arguing that, in the face of the challenge posed by leadership language and thought, a historic and contemporary Baptist understanding of ministry is best understood through a dialectical model of ministry, a habitus, rather than through a habitus of leadership. It then charts the history of preparation for ministry among Baptists and explores the contemporary developments in language and suggests that formation is the most appropriate and helpful description of the process.
