Streszczenie:
DBS is not just about passing electrical current charges into the brain, but rather DBS is integrated into a complex ecological system that involves not only electricity, but medications, biologics, rehabilitation, and a range of human issues including ethics, psychology, sociology, indeed, the full gamut of human activities. Furthermore, these human activities of concern include not only the patient and the patient’s family members, caregivers, and friends, but also physicians and healthcare professionals. Space and time limit the excursion here into these issues. The focus necessarily falls on issues directly related to DBS: the range of safety concerns, injury secondary to electricity, medical complications, adverse effects related to the activation of neural networks, and the potential psychosocial consequences of DBS.

Streszczenie:
Foreword Engineering plastics, fiber-reinforced composites and multifunctional plastic composites provide ongoing support to the modern automotive industry today. In many cases multi-functional tools and automated processes make particularly economic system solutions possible. Additive manufacturing in combination with plastics already has a great potential today for producing individual, tailor-made component concepts, above all for small production runs. Lightweight construction, an attractive look and feel for the interior, and active and passive safety stand right at the forefront of new automotive developments today. Innovations in plastics technology have a direct influence on tomorrow’s vehicle concepts. Mixed construction with plastic composites, natural fiber applications, overmolded and inmold film laminated parts, LED- and OLED-based lighting technologies, and also optically and haptically optimized display and operating concepts make tailored system solutions possible...

Streszczenie:
Magnetic resonance imaging employs strong electromagnetic fields that present a variety ofhazards. This chapter considers the interaction of the strong magnetic field with externalferromagnetic objects and those implanted in the body. The interaction of strong RF fieldscan induce currents in wires and cables which can, in certain circumstances, result in burns.By the same mechanism, excessive heating can be caused in passive implanted devicesand the operation of active implants can fail or be critically altered. The direct impact of theMR environment on the human body is described in terms of the effect of (i) the staticmagnetic field, (ii) movement through the static magnetic field, (iii) the heating effects of theRF field, and (iv) the acoustic noise. The risks involved in the use of cryogens are brieflydiscussed. Finally, practical safety procedures are recommended.

Streszczenie:
Several contemporary epistemologists have been intrigued by the discussion of the distinction between knowledge and correct opinion in Plato’s Meno (97a–98b); a number of them have suggested that Plato is appealing to the idea that to know a proposition one must be ‘safe from error’ regarding that proposition. In fact, although there is evidence that Plato assumes that knowledge requires something like safety, this passage in the Meno imposes a different requirement on knowledge—namely, what Robert Nozick called ‘adherence’, the requirement that knowledge must resiliently ‘adhere’ to the truth. Adherence is much more controversial than safety, but it seems that Plato accepted both, and it is argued that he was right to do so. Both adherence and safety can be understood in a ‘contextualist’ manner, but it seems that Plato rejects contextualism in favor of understanding both conditions in their most demanding form.

The specious present is the claimed temporal breadth in the content of an experience at a particular time. One's experience has a stream-like aspect to it. But how can this be, this chapter asks, if the world itself does not pass? Why does one's experience have this stream-like quality to it when time is itself not flowing? While making the eternalist world safe for the specious present, the chapter carves out and evaluates two contrasting understandings of the specious present.

Streszczenie:
Survivors of critical illnesses are often faced with persistent neuromuscular weakness that interferes with daily activities. Advancements in survival from critical illness have led to a rise in the number of patients afflicted with post-intensive care unit (ICU) incapacity. It is clear that the pathology leading to ICU-acquired weakness is present within 24 hours of the start of ICU care. Care-givers must consider interventions to limit or reverse these processes from the onset of critical illness. We suggest strategies both for avoiding harms and for actively promoting recovery of skeletal and respiratory muscles. Muscular silence contributes to, while muscular activity alleviates, myopathy. Thus, limiting sedation and neuromuscular blockade will facilitate spontaneous muscle activity, and allow for active participation in physical therapy. Protocols that aggressively assess for the potential for extubation shorten the duration of ventilation and thus decrease exposure to sedation. Mobility teams should safely guide patients in their progress from a passive range of motion through more active therapies despite ongoing critical illness. Early ICU mobility is not only safe, but reduces the incidence of delirium and duration of mechanical ventilation. Importantly, early ICU mobility increases the likelihood of a return to independent function among ICU survivors. A change in culture from one that practices deep sedation and protective support is suggested, to one that demonstrates an urgency to liberate patients from the confines and perils of critical illness.

Streszczenie:
This chapter concentrates on the measures taken by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to prevent acts of terrorism at sea. It looks in some detail at the legal jurisdictional framework put in place by the development and adoption of the 1988 Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation (SUA) and its 2005 Protocols. The chapter also discusses the practical measures adopted by IMO through the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code aimed at improving security in ports and on ships. Finally, this chapter concludes that these measures, which are constantly under review by the relevant committees within the IMO, have put in place the necessary building blocks. What is now required is the political will on the part of IMO Member States by passing the necessary legislation or other administrative measures to implement satisfactorily these measures.

Streszczenie:
This article sets out to unsettle some of the most taken for granted co-ordinates of landscapes in general and cities in particular that, if nothing else, we are safe in assuming them to be exclusively human achievements. Ecological landscapes are the focus of this article. It begins by exploring recent geographical thinking about ecological landscapes worked through diverse conversations with other disciplines — notably anthropology, and science and technology studies. Here the article highlights developments in the broad areas of phenomenology, affect, and biophilosophy in order to describe some key shifts in cultural geography's handling of materiality. Through this engagement with ecological landscapes and urban natures, the main aim of this article is to demonstrate the importance of reconsidering materials less as the passive stuff of which landscapes are made and more as energetic constituents in their fabrication. The second part explores the implications of such perspectives about new urban ecologies and landscaping practices.

Streszczenie:
This article reviews scholarship on the history and historiography of slavery in the early republic and antebellum United States. During the colonial period, slavery was present in varying degrees throughout what would become the United States. In the wake of the American Revolution, however, slavery became the ‘peculiar institution’ of the South. In the North, where the slave population was small and less crucial to the functioning of the economy, states took the revolutionary ideals of liberty and equality to their logical conclusion, each passing either an immediate or gradual emancipation law by 1804. Further south, especially in the Chesapeake, slavery was weakened as revolutionary-era runaways and manumissions depleted the slave population. Yet, with the fading of the revolution's egalitarian rhetoric and the invention of the cotton gin that made it possible to extract safely and efficiently the delicate fibres from short-staple cotton, the institution of slavery would not only persevere but become entrenched and expand across the southern United States. The antebellum decades witnessed the movement of slaves south and west with the advance of the cotton frontier.

Streszczenie:
In simplest terms, our skin is a layer that separates and protects us from the external environment. This assumes the skin is a passive covering to keep the insides safe and the outside out, and overlooks its enormous complexity. The skin is our largest organ and is constantly regenerating, but how efficiently it does so depends on a number of factors, some known, others unknown. It is an efficient mechanical barrier (designed for wear and repair), and a complex immunological membrane. It has a generous vascular, lymphatic, and nervous supply, all covering a considerable area. It has specialist structural and functional properties relating to specific areas, but also specialist cells within the layers of the skin. Most importantly, skin is the organ of display, an important part of social and sexual behaviour, immediately accessible to all, and often regarded as a barometer of the general state of health. Permanent scars inflicted on the skin may be a cause of great distress to the patient. Skin consists of a superficial layer, ‘the epidermis’ (concerned with producing protective keratin and a pigment called melanin), which adheres closely to the deeper layer, ‘the dermis’ (which provides the strength of the skin and houses the appendages), via the basement membrane. Loose connective tissue and fat underlie the dermis.
