Pełny tekst źródłaA growing body of literature, particularly from low and middle-income countries, has focused on the role of male involvement in maternal care as a crucial strategy to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes. The purpose of this three-paper dissertation is to add to this evidence base within the context of India, and to gain an in-depth understanding of one aspect of male involvement – that is, male partner attendance in antenatal care. This dissertation utilized data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3, 2005-06 and NFHS-4, 2015-16) and was framed using the Social Ecological Model, Connell’s Theory of Gender and Power and a Gender-Transformative lens. Paper 1 summarized the levels of male partner attendance in antenatal care and assessed changes over time. Further, multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the factors influencing male partner attendance in antenatal care. The results show an overall increase in male partner attendance in India during the period of 2005-06 to 2015-16, with the Southern region reporting the highest level of male partner attendance in both years. Higher level of education and household wealth, increased knowledge of pregnancy-related complications, older age at marriage, and women’s autonomy were positively associated with male partner attendance in antenatal care. Paper 2 examined the association between male partner attendance in antenatal care and maternal health service utilization. Controlling for all socio-demographic variables and adjusting for report of pregnancy complications, the results showed that women who were accompanied by a male partner for antenatal care reported increased odds of maternal health service utilization (early initiation of antenatal care, frequency of antenatal care contacts and institutional delivery). While the place of residence (rural/urban) did not influence the association between male partner attendance and maternal health service utilization, region had a significant moderating effect. Paper 3 examined the association between antenatal care and infant birth weight, adjusting for gestational age. Further, the analysis also assessed whether the relationship between antenatal care and infant birth weight varied by male partner attendance. Findings indicate that early initiation of antenatal care and maternal immunization was associated with reduced odds of low birth weight among infants. The results showed that male partner attendance in antenatal care did not have a moderating influence. Taken together, the findings of the three papers have implications for policy and practice; further, they provide support for interventions that aim for a more inclusive and gender-transformative approach to maternal and neonatal health

Pełny tekst źródłaBackground: Crime committed by women constitutes a minimal part of the overall crimerate. Generally, men are the ones committing majority of crimes. This is reflected by a lack ofknowledge of female perpetrators. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to highlight thesubject studied and thus increase the overall attitude towards female murderers in order toclear up the confusion when solving these cases. Method: A systematic literature study wasconducted to investigate the common denominators among the female perpetrators. Result:Women commit murders in response to men's violence, usually in a relationship and inself-defense. The majority of the female perpetrators kill their intimate partner in fair of notbeing the victim of murder them selves, the motive strictly self-defense. The femaleperpetrators hold some common denominators; mental illness, the crime happen in thecommon home and a knife is usually the murder weapon of choice. Conclusion: The essenceof proactive approach is the preventative work ahead of the crime committed. With theknowledge at hand, law enforcement need to focus on partner violence. It is obvious that theperpetrator act in fear and in self-defense, making them their own protectors when the lawenforcement fails them.

This thesis explores how organizations competent at harnessing the collective power of low-income immigrants might successfully combine their strategies to advance the well-being of their mutual constituencies. Based in Durham, North Carolina, the LCCU is a successful community development credit union that delivers financial products and financial education programs to a fast growing low-income Latino community. Based in New York City, New York, 1199SEIU is a successful local labor union that organizes low-income workers to negotiate fair wages and benefits. The LCCU and 1199SEIU represent two dissimilar models of harnessing collective power in different geographic areas in the U.S. Yet, an in-depth analysis at the history of these organizations finds certain elements of common ground upon which they could base a potential partnership. The LCCU and 1199SEIU serve a mutual constituency of low-income immigrants and share the mutual goal of improving their lives. Furthermore, an analysis of their unique competences exposes complementary sets of skills and resources. Given the existence of common ground and a subsequent interest from each organization in exploring a potential partnership, this thesis attempts to answer the following question: Can the LCCU and 1199SEIU be partners? This thesis argues that the LCCU and 1199SEIU can generate synergistic possibilities of collaboration by combining their unique competences to pursue mutual interests. However, this synergy also exposes challenges to the implementation of such possibilities. This thesis concludes by recommending a series of next steps for the LCCU and 1199SEIU to follow in order to overcome these challenges and make their potential partnership a reality.
