Objective: During the perinatal period, partners of mothers with severe mental illness (SMI) play an important role in managing the new baby and supporting the mothers’ wellbeing. Providing information via mobile phone on infant care, partner support and self-care may assist partners in their support role. Method: Partners (n = 23) of mothers with SMI were enrolled in a partner-focused SMS service sending brief texts 14 times per month for a maximum of 10 months. Partners (n = 16) were interviewed on exit and their responses analysed for acceptability and perceived usefulness of the texts. Results: Partners remained with the programme and expressed high acceptability of the texts. Participants identified effects such as increased knowledge of and interaction with their baby; effective support for their partner; and reassurance that ‘things were normal’. Few partners sought support for their own mental health. Conclusions: Texts supplied to mobile phones of partners of new mothers with SMI may increase partners’ support. The texts in this study were acceptable to partners and were reported to enhance a partner’s focus on the mother’s needs, raise the partner’s awareness of the infant’s needs, and support the partner’s confidence and competence in infant care.

Abstract When older adults in partnered relationships face a skin cancer diagnosis of one partner, couples may rely on one another for support. Previous studies have found that perceived support can influence one’s adjustment to the stressors associated with the skin cancer diagnosis, as well as influence the overall quality of life. Using dyadic data from 30 older couples (Mage = 70; SD = 7.25), this study examined positive and negative relationship-focused support strategies each partner provided and effects on the dyad’s quality of life. Dyadic path analyses simultaneously examined the impact of support received by one’s partner and its association with their own quality of life (actor effects) and their partner’s quality of life (partner effects). Positive support received by either partner, in the form of active engagement, was not associated with quality of life. In contrast, negative support in the form of protective buffering received from supporting partners was associated with poorer quality of life for themselves (β = -.37, p = .05) as well as for partners with skin cancer (β = -.43, p = .01). Similarly, overprotection, also a negative support strategy, by supporting partners was associated with poorer quality of life for partners with skin cancer (β = -.63, p < .001). Findings illustrate that not all types of support are beneficial for the overall couple relationship and couple outcomes. Implications for practice and interventions for older couples facing a cancer diagnosis will be discussed.

This study aims to analyze the income of the BUMDes “Mandiri” layer chicken farm and partner farms, as well as the size of the income earned by BUMDes “Mandiri” and breeder partners from the profit-sharing system carried out together. The research respondents were the BUMDes “Mandiri” farm manager and two breeder partners. Operating income is calculated by finding the difference between business revenues and total business costs incurred. The share received by BUMDes “Mandiri” and partner farmers from partner farm income is determined based on the percentage agreed in the partnership agreement, namely 51% for BUMDes “Mandiri” and 49% for breeder partners. The results showed that the income of the BUMDes “Mandiri” livestock business in one month was Rp. 3,668,890.00 or Rp. 3,668.89/head, while the partner's husbandry business income was Rp. 6,404,505.00 or Rp. 12,809.00/head. The portion of the partner's husbandry business income that belongs to BUMDes “Mandiri” is Rp. 3,266,295.00/month and that which belongs to breeder partners is Rp. 3,138,210.00/month.

Public expectations of auditors' objectivity, the on-going debate over auditors' independence (SEC 2001), and previous research motivate our study of one aspect of auditor rotation. Using an experimental case, we examine the impact of continuity on concurring partner reviews. Continuity specifically refers to a concurring partner's assumed degree of prior involvement with a client engagement. We explore two levels of prior involvement—a continuing concurring partner (i.e., involved as a concurring partner in the current and prior year's engagement) and a new concurring partner (i.e., involved as a concurring partner in the current year's engagement only). Based on information in the case, audit partners in the role of concurring partners make judgments related to goodwill impairment. Consistent with our expectation, continuing concurring partners are less likely than new concurring partners to conclude that purchased goodwill may be impaired. Based on our results, the recent regulatory actions mandating within-firm rotation of concurring partners are likely to affect audit firm judgments.

ObjectivesWe sought to determine willingness of gay and bisexual men (GBM) to give HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits with patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT) and engage in geosocial sexual networking (GSN) app-based partner notification.MethodsA nationwide sample of GBM who self-tested HIV negative (n=786) were asked about their willingness to give recent sex partners (main and casual) PDPT with an HIVST kit (PDPT+HIVST) after hypothetical bacterial STI (BSTI) diagnosis. Men were also asked about their willingness to notify sexual partners met on GSN apps using an anonymous app function after BSTI diagnosis. We examined associations of relationship status and condomless anal sex with casual partners, recent BSTI diagnosis and perceived risk of HIV on PDPT+HIVST and anonymous app-based partner notification willingness (dichotomised) using binary logistic regressions, adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, education and US region. From the partner’s perspective after receiving an app-based referral, frequency measures were used to report intentions for obtaining subsequent HIV/BSTI counselling and testing, engaging in HIVST if provided a free voucher, and obtaining BSTI treatment from a pharmacy with prescription voucher.ResultsMost (90.1%) were willing to give PDPT+HIVST to recent sex partners after STI diagnosis, and nearly all (96.4%) were willing to notify sex partners met online using an anonymous function within GSN apps. Regardless of casual partner condomless anal sex engagement, partnered GBM had higher odds of reporting willingness to give PDPT+HIVST compared with single men who recently engaged in condomless anal sex with a casual partner. If anonymously notified via an app, 92.5% reported they would likely obtain counselling and testing, 92.8% would engage in HIVST if provided a free voucher, and 93.4% would obtain treatment from a pharmacy with prescription voucher.ConclusionsGBM generally found novel partner notification, testing, and treatment strategies acceptable, indicating the need for feasibility and cost-effectiveness evaluations.

ABSTRACT Using data from Taiwan, where a long history of engagement partner performance is available, we examine the reputational consequences that engagement partners suffer for having a recent history of past audit failures. We find that when an engagement partner's recent history of poor audit quality is observable to audit clients, they are more likely to lose clients and are less likely to be reassigned to serve other clients of the audit firm over the next five years. We also find that these engagement partners are more likely to stop serving as engagement partners in the next five years, and those who remain in client service experience a reallocation of assignments. Additionally, the clients that these partners continue to serve exhibit increased risk. Overall, our findings suggest that an engagement partner's prior audit quality influences clients' and audit firms' engagement partner selection.

Introduction Intimate partner violence is increasingly gaining attention as the leading form of violence against women globally, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. Given that substance abuse, especially alcohol consumption has long been associated with aggressive behaviour, emotional abuse, and sexual misconduct, it is surprising that studies on the potential association between partner’s alcohol consumption and intimate partner violence are scarce. The current study seeks to fill this gap in the literature by examining the association between partner’s alcohol consumption and intimate partner violence among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods Cross-sectional survey data of 89,229 women aged 15 to 49 in sexual unions from 21 sub-Saharan African countries were pooled from the Demographic and Health Surveys. Percentages with their corresponding confidence intervals (CIs) were used to present the results of the prevalence of partner’s alcohol consumption and intimate partner violence. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between partner’s alcohol consumption and intimate partner violence. The regression analysis results were presented using adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% CI. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results The pooled prevalence of partner alcohol consumption was 36.3% [36.0–36.6]. The highest prevalence of partner alcohol consumption was found in Burundi (67.1%) with Mali (3.9%) recording the lowest prevalence. Similarly, the overall prevalence of physical violence, emotional violence, and sexual violence among the women were 19.7% [19.2–20.2], 25.0% [24.5–25.5], and 9.7% [9.3–10.1], respectively. In the pooled data, women whose partners consumed alcohol were more likely to experience physical violence [aOR = 2.37, 95% CI = 2.24–2.50], emotional violence [aOR = 1.96, 95% CI = 1.86–2.07], and sexual violence [aOR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.89–2.18] compared to those whose partners did not consume alcohol. In all the 21 countries, women whose partners consumed alcohol had higher odds for physical and emotional violence. The odds of sexual violence was higher among women whose partners consumed alcohol compared to their counterparts whose partners did not in 20 countries, except Namibia. Conclusions We found that partner’s alcohol consumption increases women’s likelihood of experiencing physical, emotional, and sexual violence in sub-Saharan Africa. There is the need to implement behavioural change interventions targeted at male partners to reduce alcohol consumption. The findings call for the need to effectively create and organize support networks in addressing intimate partner violence among married and cohabiting women.

This cross-sectional study describes the prevalence and context of violence by sexual partners against female sex workers (FSWs, N = 589) in Andhra Pradesh and its association with alcohol use by FSWs and abusive partners. In all, 84% of FSWs reported alcohol use; 65% reported lifetime physical abuse by a sexual partner. Most abused women suffered abuse from multiple partners, often triggered by inebriation or FSW’s defiance. In multivariate logistic regressions, frequency of FSW’s alcohol use was associated with abuse by clients and primary partner, whereas partner’s alcohol use was only significant for abuse by primary partner, not clients.

As a part of their risk management strategy, large audit firms have established a second partner review process during client screening. It is unclear, however, whether review partners are biased by the engagement risk assessment that is provided to them by a contact partner as a part of this process. Of particular interest are cases where the contact partner's engagement risk assessment is overly favorable when compared to the underlying evidence. We report the results of an experiment where approximately one-half of the review partners received an engagement risk assessment that was overly favorable when compared to the underlying evidence, while the other half of the review partners received an assessment that was more consistent with the client data provided. We examined the effect of this manipulated difference on review partner engagement risk assessments, acceptance judgments, fee judgments, and justification activity. Results from a sample of 78 audit partners reveal that, on average, they were not influenced by differences in the contact partner's assessment when rendering their own engagement risk assessments. However, the acceptance and fee judgments of the partners who received overly favorable risk assessments were more conservative than those of the partners who received a more consistent assessment. In addition, justification activity was greater for the group who received overly favorable judgments. These results imply that a second partner review appears to aid auditing firms in avoiding overly risky clients during the acceptance process.

Abstract Intimate relationship partners dynamically covary in their affective states. One mechanism through which intimate relationship partners experience and shape each other’s affective states is affect contagion, i.e., the spread of affective states from one person to another. The degree to which social-cognitive processes are involved in affect contagion in daily life remains unclear. The majority of older adults live together with a spouse/partner, and intimate relationships are one of the most important social contexts in their daily lives. Expanding on previous research, we focused on contagion of positive and negative affect between older relationship partners, and examined whether processes of affect contagion were mediated by perceptions of partner affect, i.e., how individuals thought their partners felt at previous moments. We used data from an experience sampling study with 152 older heterosexual couples (304 participants; 65+ years old) who reported on their positive and negative affect, perceptions of their partner’s positive and negative affect, and presence or absence of partners 6 times a day for 14 days. Dyadic multilevel mediation models were used to evaluate our hypotheses. We observed strong evidence that processes of positive affect contagion between partners were mediated by perceptions of partner’s affective states. Negative affect contagion was directed from men to women, but not vice versa, and mediated by perceptions of partner’s affective states. Partner presence was unrelated to processes of affect contagion. Our findings help identify underlying mechanisms of affect contagion and support the notion that perceptions of close others’ emotions might shape our own feelings.

This research explores the question: are parents partners? Far from being an evaluative study of the degree to which partnership is realised in practice, it is the very concept of partnership which has become the problematic I have examined. The focus of this study is a view of partnership which emerged in the mid nineteen eighties - the participatory model. This view of partnership is based on the principles of equality and reciprocity between parents and teachers. I contrast this rhetoric with how the reality of parental involvement is experienced. This is based on ethnographic research of parental participation in two schools. I have looked at the process, perspectives, adaptations and strategies which develop in day-to-day contact between parents, teaching staff and children. This is an aspect of parental involvement which has received little attention in previous academic research. My research highlights the assumptions which underlie both the principles of participatory partnership and existing accounts of the reality of parental involvement. Furthermore, I reveal the hidden reality of women and children as forgotten partners.

A growing body of literature, particularly from low and middle-income countries, has focused on the role of male involvement in maternal care as a crucial strategy to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes. The purpose of this three-paper dissertation is to add to this evidence base within the context of India, and to gain an in-depth understanding of one aspect of male involvement – that is, male partner attendance in antenatal care. This dissertation utilized data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3, 2005-06 and NFHS-4, 2015-16) and was framed using the Social Ecological Model, Connell’s Theory of Gender and Power and a Gender-Transformative lens. Paper 1 summarized the levels of male partner attendance in antenatal care and assessed changes over time. Further, multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the factors influencing male partner attendance in antenatal care. The results show an overall increase in male partner attendance in India during the period of 2005-06 to 2015-16, with the Southern region reporting the highest level of male partner attendance in both years. Higher level of education and household wealth, increased knowledge of pregnancy-related complications, older age at marriage, and women’s autonomy were positively associated with male partner attendance in antenatal care. Paper 2 examined the association between male partner attendance in antenatal care and maternal health service utilization. Controlling for all socio-demographic variables and adjusting for report of pregnancy complications, the results showed that women who were accompanied by a male partner for antenatal care reported increased odds of maternal health service utilization (early initiation of antenatal care, frequency of antenatal care contacts and institutional delivery). While the place of residence (rural/urban) did not influence the association between male partner attendance and maternal health service utilization, region had a significant moderating effect. Paper 3 examined the association between antenatal care and infant birth weight, adjusting for gestational age. Further, the analysis also assessed whether the relationship between antenatal care and infant birth weight varied by male partner attendance. Findings indicate that early initiation of antenatal care and maternal immunization was associated with reduced odds of low birth weight among infants. The results showed that male partner attendance in antenatal care did not have a moderating influence. Taken together, the findings of the three papers have implications for policy and practice; further, they provide support for interventions that aim for a more inclusive and gender-transformative approach to maternal and neonatal health

Parents play a central role in their children's education and social development and therefore can be extremely influential in children's attitudes, decisions and behaviour towards drugs. Despite this, there has been limited research to date which explores the parents' perspective and their needs in the area of drug education. This thesis reports on research which surveyed 92 parents of secondary students (Years 7-10) across ten secondary schools in the Australian Capital Territory. Two follow up focus group sessions, involving fourteen parents of secondary students, were also conducted with self-nominated parents of these respondents. The issues explored in the research include parents' concerns and knowledge of young people and drug issues, and their needs for a drug education program aimed at parents. The results show that parents see their role in drug education as a central one and are concerned about drugs in relation to their children and other young people. They are largely unaware of school drug policies and school drug education programs and want to work in closer partnership with the school and community in educating their children about drug issues. Parents identified a need for accurate and up to date information as they do not have sufficient knowledge in this area. Parents also identified a need to develop skills in dealing with adolescents and drug issues. This study provides insight into a range of parents' views on drug issues and confirms that parents would like to develop both knowledge and skills in order to support young people and reinforce school drug education programs. A number of implications of the results for the involvement of parents in drug education programs are presented, including: parent needs, strategies for delivery/ implementation and motivating factors for encouraging parental participation in such programs.

Streszczenie:
HES6 is a novel member of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family of transcription factors that is involved in the activation of the myoblast differentiation program. Studies demonstrated that HES6 can regulate transcription from gene promoters containing an N box (CACNAG), a DNA motif located in the regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes involved in myoblast differentiation. This suggested that a HES6 heterodimer could bind to the N box. The purpose of this study was to identify putative HES6 dimerization partners that would allow it's binding to the N box and then repress transcription. A genome-wide screen isolated several clones. Potential positive clones, the heat shock proteins HSP169 and HSP70 were identified. The functional significance of this interaction remains to be determined. A candidate gene approach allowed detection of an interaction in vivo between HES6 and a novel hairy-related bHLH protein, CHF2. This interaction was detected by co-immunoprecipitation using the first specific anti-HES6 antibody synthesized. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays revealed that the heterodimer was unable to bind to any of the N-boxes present in the 5'-flanking region of CHF2, which was confirmed by assessing the specificity of the controls used in the experiments. It was suggested that HES6 sequesters CHF2 by the formation of an inactive heterodimer. Although a band shift was observed when incubating each of the Nboxes in the presence of total cell extract from differentiated C2C12 cells, it was not confirmed whether HES6 was one of the proteins binding to the oligonucleotides. This work has identified a novel interaction between HES6 and CHF2 and our data suggests that this interaction lead to formation of inactive heterodimers.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Two-thirds of Astaire’s dances are duos done with one other dancer. This part considers Astaire’s duo dances from two quantitative perspectives: how much time the partners touch each other and how the two partners relate to each other physically. Astaire’s use of closed ballroom position often indicates a conventional heterosexual relationship between the couple. His use of vaudeville double-act position—dancers facing front and dancing in unison—establishes a parity between partners. Surprisingly, Astaire relates to female and male partners in much the same way, with the major difference being more physical contact between Astaire and the women with whom he dances. Astaire’s only dance with a Black partner, from The Band Wagon, contains substantial differences from his dances with white partners. The formative influence of Adele Astaire and Hermes Pan (Astaire’s dance assistant and a closeted gay man) on Astaire’s partner dances is discussed.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Homicide is a leading cause of premature death for all women in the United States, especially African-American and Native-American women. The majority of women killed in the United States and around the world are killed by intimate partners, husbands, boyfriends, or ex-partners. The leading risk factor for intimate partner homicide (IPH) of both female and male partners is prior intimate partner violence (IPV) against the female partner. Other important risk factors include guns in the home, estrangement, stepchildren (woman’s biological child, not male partner’s child) in home, male partner unemployment, threats to kill, and threats with a weapon, forced sex, and abuse during pregnancy. Needed areas of research related to IPH include interventions to decrease IPH, causes of ethnic disparities in IPH, IPH as a leading cause of maternal mortality, IPH among samesex partners, and children affected by IPH.

Streszczenie:
Partner choice is an important element for any business throughout its lifecycle. It is even more strategic in early startup stages, when the business model is set in the pre-incubation phase.Entrepreneurs are confronted to take decisions on which partners to choose. Those strategic decisions on which partners to commit with, and defining their roles, can be made more or less formally, with the risk of relying on “gut feelings” when there is complex data to be taken in consideration and when there is pressure, constraints, limited resources and no proper methodology for the entrepreneur to base its decision on.Confronted to such a situation, it is interesting to consider building a decision-making support methodology for strategic partner choice for in the business modelling phase of a startup pre-incubation phase. This can offer support to the entrepreneur and make its leadership anchored in more formal approach to decision-making.This research presents a methodological framework that can support early startups, while still in the pre-incubation phase, to select the most suitable strategic business partner(s) and develop, based on that, their business operations, management, development and commercialization models. The methodology offers an initial approach which allows an entrepreneur to make more formal investigation and be assisted in the decision-making process on choosing the partners and defining their roles and contribution in the strategy of the start-up. Specifically, the methodology intends to provide support on selecting the most relevant and feasible data types that need to be collected for the effective partner evaluation and selection. Furthermore, it provides a data collection mechanism and algorithm, a partner evaluation procedure, support on identifying the strategic intend or need from a specific partner, the analysis of the potential partner based on the partnership needs, a scoring tableau based on several parameters per partner selection criteria and finally the calculation of the potential partner’s score. The research conducted evaluated twenty-one potential partners for a VR training startup that intends to operate in the following months and it is currently at the partnerships establishment phase. The partners that have been analyzed derive from eight, related to the start-up, professional sectors, from five countries, and with more than fifty unique activities that cover the fourteen key parameters of the partner evaluation methodology. The paper presents the overall methodological approach in stages and the procedure (steps) of each stage. It indicates the goal setting approach, the evaluation of the partner’s activities, the partner’s evaluation scorecard, the computation of the scoring process and the visualization of the scoring results in tables and charts that create a partner’s evaluation dashboard for effective partners comparison in total or in specific partnership requirements as set in the partnerships strategy and objectives. It must be noted that the proposed methodology is not an optimal tool but more of a heuristic exploratory tool. Further research has been scheduled to be extend the testing of the methodology with more cases, to increase the number of partner evaluation parameters and to link several of the related parameter metrics with sources than can provide more subjective values.

Streszczenie:
Collaborative tasks often begin with partial task knowledge and incomplete plans from each partner. To complete these tasks, partners need to engage in situated communication with their partners and coordinate their partial plans towards a complete plan to achieve a joint task goal. While such collaboration seems effortless in a human-human team, it is highly challenging for human-AI collaboration. To address this limitation, this paper takes a step towards Collaborative Plan Acquisition, where humans and agents strive to learn and communicate with each other to acquire a complete plan for joint tasks. Specifically, we formulate a novel problem for agents to predict the missing task knowledge for themselves and for their partners based on rich perceptual and dialogue history. We extend a situated dialogue benchmark for symmetric collaborative tasks in a 3D blocks world and investigate computational strategies for plan acquisition. Our empirical results suggest that predicting the partner's missing knowledge is a more viable approach than predicting one's own. We show that explicit modeling of the partner's dialogue moves and mental states produces improved and more stable results than without. These results provide insight for future AI agents that can predict what knowledge their partner is missing and, therefore, can proactively communicate such information to help the partner acquire such missing knowledge toward a common understanding of joint tasks.

Streszczenie:
Despite seven rounds of negotiations since 2007, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Canada were unable to concur on the establishment of a free trade agreement (FTA) to replace the existing Caribbean Canada Trade Agreement (CARIBCAN). Instead, the CARIBCAN waiver has been extended until 2023. At this stage, it is unclear when or if both parties will return to negotiations under the extended CARIBCAN waiver. Despite this uncertainty, it is important to determine whether Canada is a good trading partner for the CARICOM region. To undertake this exercise, we examine issues relating to export competitiveness, comparative advantage, and trade complementarity for trade in goods and services between CARICOM countries and Canada. We also conduct an experiment which assumes that a FTA is formed between CARICOM and Canada in order to estimate the impact of tariff liberalization on trade, revenue, and welfare on CARICOM countries. Our results indicate an unfavorable outlook for CARICOM countries on welfare grounds as well as on improving exports from CARICOM countries to Canada.
