The present author has conducted research on partnering co‐operation in construction industry. The research was carried out using the questionnaire method in selected administrative regions of the following three countries: Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. It was assumed that analysis would mainly concern medium and large construction enterprises and that the respondents would include selected experts in these enterprises: owners, enterprise managers, construction site managers. The final assessment of the partnering relations of Polish and Slovak construction enterprises is similar. Partnering co‐operation in construction industry is already noticeable but still remains on a low level. The assessment of the partnering relations in Ukrainian construction enterprises is lower than in the Polish and Slovak ones. Santrauka Autorė atliko partnerių bendradarbiavimo statybos pramonėje tyrimą. Tyrimas atliktas anketinės apklausos metodu, respondentai apklausti pasirinktuose Lenkijos, Slovakijos ir Ukrainos administraciniuose regionuose. Analizė apėmė vidutines ir dideles statybos įmones. Buvo apklausti įmoniu savininkai, vadovai, statybų vadovai. Tyrimas atskleide, kad partnerių bendradarbiavimas statybos pramoneje jau yra pastebimas, tačiau vis dar reikiamai neišpletotas. Purpose Partnering has been at the top of the management agenda in the construction industry for many years as a means of improving performance. Previous research shows that partnering has not reached the desired level of strategic partnering, but stopped at project partnering. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analytical framing for transformation from project partnering towards strategic partnering with suppliers. Design/methodology/approach The framework is based on two building blocks: a case study of a contractor involved in implementing strategic partnering with four of its suppliers and a literature review dealing with partnering in construction; and models for close and long-term buyer-supplier collaboration in other contexts. Findings Transformation towards strategic partnering should preferably be based on extension of project partnering in two dimensions: extension in time through relationship development with suppliers and extension in space through increasing network orientation across projects. Practical implications Succeeding with relationship development and network orientation requires contractors to abandon two significant aspects of established construction logic that serve as significant implementation barriers. Competitive bidding in single projects needs to be replaced by collaboration over series of projects. The decentralisation of authority to the project level needs to be supplemented with increasing centralised decision making. Originality/value Previous research showed that despite the considerable interest in partnering there is a lack of systematic theorizing of the phenomenon. This paper contributes to theoretical anchoring through the combining of the case study and the literature review in the abductive approach applied.

Hoewel er de laatste jaren enig onderzoek naar internetpartnerships is gedaan, blijkt de rol van grote gevestigde ondernemingen in internetpartnerships nog grotendeels onderbelicht te zijn. Dit artikel richt zich met name op het gebruik van e-partnerships door deze traditionele, nietinternetgerelateerde organisaties. Op basis van een grootschalig empirisch onderzoek worden vier e-partneringstrategieën en vier e-partneringstructuren onderscheiden. Vier cases valideren de ontwikkelde conceptualisering en geven inzicht in de ontwikkelingen van e-partnerships in de loop der tijd.

Partnering är en samarbetsform som går att applicera på alla projekt. Partnering kan användas från ett tidigt skede i projektet, redan i idéstadiet, fram tills projektet är färdigställt. Det finns till och med exempel där partneringsamarbeten framgångsrikt har fortsatt längre än till färdigställandet. Samarbetet har då även omfattat underhåll av den slutliga produkten. Men vad är egentligen partnering? Att partnering är en samarbetsform är allmänt känt men vad partnering innebär som arbetsform och hur partnering görs framgångsrikt råder det delade meningar om. Dessutom har partneringsamarbete fått en oförtjänad stämpel om att vara något förlegat och oanvändbart. Det har till och med gott så långt att vissa företag istället väljer att kalla arbetsformen för samverkan för att slippa kämpa emot den negativa synen på ordet partnering. I detta examensarbete reds begreppet partnering ut och en redogörelse görs för hur ett partneringsamarbete bedrivs framgångsrik samt vad som förväntas av en partneringentreprenör respektive beställaren av ett partneringprojekt. Arbetet är baserat på litteraturstudier samt kvalitativa intervjuer.
Partnering as a cooperation form can be used in every type of building project. Partnering can be used from an early stage in a project and all the way to the finishing line. There are even some examples where partnering successfully have proceed way longer than to the completing of the project. On these kind of occasions the cooperation has concluded maintenance of the final product. But what does partnering really mean? It is well known that partnering consists of actors working together but what does this actually mean considering the working form? And how are you supposed to make partnering successful? Furthermore, partnering have gotten an undeserved bad label as something out of date and useless. Some companies even chooses not to use the word partnering just because the negative associations from the word. This essay will make the concept of partnering more clear and will work as a guide for how to make partnering successful. The work is based on studies of literature written in the subject as well as qualitative interviews.

This master's thesis is divided into three parts. The process report (part 1) along with the article “Partnering in Statsbygg” (part 2) presents the equivalent of a regular master’s thesis. The appendixes are presented in part 3.To address the adversarial culture of the construction industry, partnering is used as a mean to create a collaborative and flexible building process where each partner achieves their business objectives. This paper identifies which partnering elements - understood as contractual elements included in order to create win-win situations for the contracting parties - a large Norwegian public client – Statsbygg - has used in their partnering projects. Based on findings the article recommends which elements that should be used in future Statsbygg as well as other partnering projects. The methodological approach chosen for our investigation was based on 1) a literature study, 2) the distribution and analysis of a questionnaire, and 3) interviews with professionals having experience with partnering.The recommendations include elements such as; early involvement of design-builder, key subcontractors and consultants, value based procurement, an intentional agreement, target cost with bonus/malus incentives, open book economy, partnering charter, continuous workshops, partnering measurements, co-localization, partnering champions, external facilitators, a predetermined method of dispute resolution, and a contractual right to remove unsuitable people.The interviewees maintained partnering as an important step in the direction of changing the culture characterizing the Norwegian construction industry from an adversarial to a cooperative value based culture. Partnering is Statsbygg’s way of facilitating a lean construction process where less time is wasted on disputes, and more value is added to the project.

Samverkansformen partnering har under de senaste åren använts i stor utsträckning på den svenska byggmarknaden. Arbetssättet kom till Sverige i slutet av 1990- talet och har främst under de senaste fem åren etablerat sig hos beställare och byggentreprenörer. Trots det så är det fortfarande ett helt nytt begrepp för många. Då byggbranschen är relativt konservativ har det tagit tid att etablera partnering i branschen. Många var i början tveksamma och skeptiska till detta nya sätt att arbeta på. Det har visat sig vara få beställare om ångrar sig efter att ha genomfört ett projekt med partnering som samverkansform. Det har istället visat sig vara så fördelaktigt att beställarna fortsätter genomföra projekt utefter denna nya modell. Detta examensarbete har undersökt hur beställare ser på partnering idag. Genom intervjuer har det gjorts en sammanställning av hur byggbranschens beställare förhåller sig till partnering och hur långt fram de har kommit i användandet av samverkansformen. Från intervjuer och litteraturstudie framkommer det att partnering ställer stora krav på beställarna. De blir tvungna att engagera sig mer i ett projekt och de behöver höja sin byggtekniska kompetens. Det behövs utbildning i partnering bland beställare. Det blir tydligt då det har visat sig att de olika beställarna har sin syn på arbetssättet. Då det är projekt med karaktärer som är komplexa, stora, med höga risker och med pressade byggtider har det framkommit att partnering lämpar sig bäst. Beställarna ser ljust på framtiden och de menar att användandet av partnering kommer att öka. Det är en samverkansform där alla spelar med öppna kort och har ett gemensamt moraliskt ansvar. Detta nya arbetssätt har visat sig tilltala människor i branschen.
Partnering as a cooperation form has during the last years being widely used on the swedish construction market. This way of working went to Sweden at the end of the 90 decenary and it has during the five years past being a established of clients and buildignentrepreneurs. As the construction industry is quite conservative it has taken long time to establish partnering in the industry. At the beginning many people had a negative attitude to this new way of working. After completing projects with partnering as cooperation form it has been clear that most of the clients don’t regret their choise of using partnering. Instead partnering has been so successful so the clients continues to use this new way of working for their projects. This thes has examinated how clients attitude are to partnering today. Through interviews has a conclution been done as shows how the clients of the construction industry act to partnering, and also how far the have come in the using of the cooperation form. From interviews and literature study it shows that partnering puts high claims on the clients. They had to engage themselves in a project and they need to work up theirs technical knowledge for construction. It is necessary to educate the clients of how partnering works. This becomes clear as it has been showen that the clients has their own picture of this new way of working. When it comes to projects with characters which are complex, large, with high risks and with and a small project time it has been showed that partnering i the best way of working. The clients have a positive sight for the future and they mean that the using of partnering will increase. Partnering is a cooperation form in which everyones playes with their cards open and has got a morally responsabillity. This new way of working seems to appeal to people in the construction industry.

Detta examensarbete handlar om byggbranschens syn på samverkansformen partnering Genom att vi har intervjuat aktörer som är verksamma inom olika områden i byggbranschen har vi skapat ett underlag för att kunna belysa åsikterna om samverkansformen partnering ur flera perspektiv. Vi redovisar även hur samverkansformen partnering påverkar ett projekt jämfört med ett projekt som styrs efter traditionella former. Idén om examensarbetet utarbetades med Lars Fredriksson på NCC. För att skapa oss kunskap och en grund att stå på började vi med att bearbeta litteratur inom området för att på så sätt kunna författa en teoretisk referensram. Med stöd av den teoretiska referensramen utformades sedan ett formulär med frågor som vi sedan använt oss av i våra intervjuer. För att få ut maximal effekt av intervjuerna har vi använt vi oss av en diktafon vilket inneburit att ingen information gått förlorad. Därefter så skrevs intervjumaterialet ner på papper för att underlätta vidare bearbetning i form av sammanfattningar och analyser. Dessa analyser är gjorde ur beställarens, konsultens och entreprenörens perspektiv på samverkansformen partnering. Vi har sedan jämfört analyserna mot en fastställd teoretisk referensram för att undersöka vilka faktorer och parametrar som är högst prioriterade av branschen. Utifrån det har vi gjort egna reflektioner som genererat i vår avslutande diskussion och slutsats. De parametrar och faktorer som nämns i den teoretiska referensramen och som återspeglas i samtliga intervjuer är: • Gemensamma mål • Öppen Ekonomi • Workshop Andra parametrar och faktorer som de aktörer vi intervjuat lägger stor vikt vid är: • Förtroende • Erfarenhet • Incitament Vi tror att samverkansformen partnering kommer tillämpas i större utsträckning om det utarbetades en generell modell för denna arbetsmetod samt ett regelverk anpassat för partnering. Samtidigt så krävs det också erfarenhetsåterföring och en positiv ryktesspridning av renodlade partneringprojekt.
This thesis work is about the construction industry views of cooperation partnering. By that we have interviewed players who are active in various fields in the construction industry, we have created a basis to shed light on the views of cooperation partnering from several perspectives. We also describe how the cooperation partnering affect a project compared with a project that is governed by traditional forms. The idea of the degree project was developed with Lars Fredriksson at NCC. In order to create knowledge and a basis on which to stand, we ended up having to process literature in the field in order to be able to write a theoretical frame of reference. With the support of the theoretical frame of reference, we created a form with questions that we then made use of in our interviews. To get the maximum effect of the interviews, we have made use of a dictation machine, which meant that no information is lost. Thereafter, as the interview was written down on paper to facilitate further processing in the form of summaries and analyses. These analyses are made out of the originator, consultant and entrepreneur’s perspective on cooperation partnering. We have then compared the analyses for a fixed theoretical frame of reference to examine the factors and parameters which is the highest priority of the industry. From there, we have made our own reflections, which generated in our discussion and conclusion. The parameters and factors mentioned in the theoretical frame of reference and that is reflected in all the interviews are: • Common objectives • Open Economy • Workshop Other parameters and factors such as the operators we interviewed put great emphasis on is: • Confidence • Experience • Incentives We believe that partnering of cooperation will apply to a greater extent if it was drawn up a general model for this working method and a regulatory framework suited for partnering. At the same time, so it follows reinjection of experience and a positive reputational of pure projects of partnering.

Då litteraturen och forskningen är begränsad inom ämnet kundnytta i partneringprojekt, väcktes intresset att genomföra en empirisk studie om ämnet. Det har inte visat sig vara lämpligt att genomföra detta mot en specifik fråga eller ett problem då den befintliga informationen behandlar teori och tillämpningar av partnering, inte kundnytta. Med hänsyn till ovanstående problematik syftar denna uppsats till att beskriva hur olika parter, kopplade till partneringverksamhet i Sverige, upplever vilka arbetssätt och faktorer som maximerar kundnyttan i ett partneringprojekt. En kvalitativ metod där sex personer intervjuades, kopplade till partneringverksamhet i Sverige. Intervjuerna är semistrukturerade och anpassade till varje enskilt intervjuobjekt. De viktigaste slutsatserna som besvarar syftet är:  Förstå kundens affär  Välj ersättningsform baserat på grundlagt tillit och projekttyp  Alla parters samlade kunskaper ger rätt förutsättningar för beställaren att fatta rätt beslut  Avsaknad av gemensamma välutvecklade digitala hjälpmedel  Ta beslut i rätt tid  Referensytor och egenslutkontroller istället för besiktningsman
The literature and research is limited in the subject costumer value in partnering projects. This contributed to the interest to perform an empirical study on the topic. It has not been shown to be appropriate to implement this on a specific issue or problem, when the available information deals with the theory and applications of partnering, not customer value. Given the above problem this papers purpose is to describe how the various contractors and clients, associated with partnering activities in Sweden, experiencing the work and factors that maximize customer value in a partnering project. A qualitative method where six people were interviewed, related to partnering activities in Sweden. The interviews are semi-structured and adapted to each interviewee. The most important conclusions that answer the purpose are:  Understand the customers business  Choose a form of compensation based on founded trust and project type  All parties combined knowledge provides the right conditions for the customer to make the right decision  Lack of common well-developed digital tools  Make decisions at the right time  Reference Surfaces and own final checks instead third party inspector

Abstract For several US communities municipal waste combustor (MWC) ash recycling has been a commercial reality for almost a decade with over 1 million tons processed and beneficially used to date. Yet, despite the successes to date a recent report by the Integrated Waste Services Association shows less than 5% of the 7.5 million tons of ash generated in the US is recycled and beneficially used [1]. The technological, scientific and myriad of commercial successes categorically demonstrate the feasibility of ash recycling. The next step is for communities, regulatory agencies, transportation departments, and customers to partner with businesses to recycle their ash stream in an economically and environmentally sound manner. An example of this “partnering for progress” is the focus of this paper. The ash recycling partnership described in this paper was presented the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in 1999. Proving that Partnering is a win-win situation for businesses, communities and the environment.

Abstract Mindful partnering is a newly conceptualized construct to measure interpersonal mindfulness in the relationship with one's intimate partner. Mindful partnering is characterized by mindful awareness toward one’s partner as well as compassion and acceptance of one’s partner. We hypothesized that higher levels of mindful partnering would be associated with lesser physiological reactivity to relationship conflict (i.e., less biological stress during relationship conflict). Seventeen couple pairs (N= 34) visited the laboratory to complete several tasks, including questionnaires and a conflict discussion in which they discussed the largest areas of conflict in their relationship. Participants had their Respiratory Sinus Arrythmia (RSA), a measure of nervous system activation, measured during the baseline period and conflict discussion. Participants completed the Mindful Partnering Measure (MPM) to measure the extent to which one demonstrates mindful partnering in their relationship with their romantic partner, including the subscales of MPM- Mindful Awareness and MPM- Acceptance/Compassion. Regression analyses suggested that MPM-Mindful Awareness significantly predicted partner’s greater RSA, indicating that 9% of the variance in RSA was accounted for by partner’s MPM- mindful awareness (a small effect), suggesting greater relaxation and a less pronounced stress response. These results suggest that when one’s partner is fully present and attentive, it may relieve the potential stress of marital disagreement. Being present with full attention in this way may soothe a partner’s nervous system by creating a feeling of being fully listened to and understood in the context of conflict.
