Streszczenie:
Abstract The official narrative of parental laws in Israel describes biological parenthood as the natural legal basis for determining parenthood, while recognizing legal adoption and surrogacy, in specific circumstances, as the sole official exception to the rule (and even then with some remnants of the biological connection). However, closer examination of parental laws in Israel, as well as in other countries, reveals that biological parenthood has in fact never served as the sole basis for recognizing parental status. Familial status, explicit and implicit agreements, and functional parenthood have all served, and continue to serve in many cases, albeit not always officially, as key parameters in determining the parental relationship and its consequences. The objection against the exclusivity of natural, biological parenthood has seemingly been strengthened in light of the challenge facing lawmakers through technological reproduction advances such as sperm donations, egg donations, and surrogacy. As a result of these recent developments, prominent scholars have begun to seek alternative definitions for the biological definition. One such approach, which was influenced by cultural feminism, attempts to determine the identity of the parent based on a concrete psychological relationship between the parent and the child. Another, more radical approach, views individual autonomy and the voluntary contract as the new basis for legal parenthood. In this essay, I argue that both alternatives – natural-biological and voluntary contract – do not sufficiently narrate the story behind determination of parenthood in Israeli law nor do they supply a sound normative basis for proper regulation of parental determination. In addition, I argue that while these approaches, which focus on the concrete psychological relationship between parent and child, add an important element to the discussion of parental determination, they are too focused on the private aspects of specific parent–child relationships and in doing so, these approaches overlook important elements of the proper legal regulation of parenthood. In light of this insufficiency, I suggest a social-institutional perspective of parenthood, one emphasizing that parenthood is not merely a matter of nature, but instead an artificial construct structured and designed by society. In addition, this approach rejects the current dissonance that exists between (1) the legal determination of parenthood; (2) the regulation of reproductive technologies, on the one hand, and the regulation of parenthood’s content in the sense of regulating parental status vs. state and vs. children, on the other hand. This approach maintains that the legal and social definition of parenthood will inevitably affect the content of parenthood. Therefore, I argue that on a normative level, various decisions regarding regulation of reproductive technologies and the determination of parenthood must take into account not only the involved parties but also the manner the decision can affect the conception “who is a parent” and more importantly, the ethos of parenthood that the law should encourage.

Growing numbers of middle-aged Americans whose children have grown up and gone off, or those who assumed they would soon have an empty nest, are leaving the porch light on for offspring who are returning home to stay well into their 20s and 30s. . . It's like Parenthood II. Rising housing costs and beginning pay rates that have not gone up as fast as those of more experienced workers have been identified as two major causes of this trend. But recent research suggests an even more important explanation: Young Americans are in fact having difficulty growing up, many are spoiled by their parents' affluence and unwilling to go out on their own and settle for less.

Streszczenie:
Background Stress, coping and adjustment within adoptive parenthood has received increasing attention, particularly within the current climate of late-placed adoptions (children placed for adoption aged 12 months or above). Many adopted children have pre- adoption experiences ranging from maltreatment to loss of their primary carer. These are associated with increased parenting difficulties. Many couples adopt because they have been unable to conceive birth children. For all concerned, adjustment within adoption is expected to be a difficult and stressful experience. This is the case for a small minority. However, for the majority of adoptive families positive adjustment occurs despite the considerable challenges. This complex picture suggests factors which predict stress and coping remain to be understood. Furthermore, lacking within the literature are adoptive parents' subjective experiences of their experience adopting within the current climate. Method An integrative review of existing research was completed to examine how adoptive parents manage the considerable demands of adoptive parenting, using the framework of Family Stress Theory. Qualitative research exploring the experience of becoming a parent through late-placed adoptions was completed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis as the method of analysis. Adjustment in Adoptive Parenthood Results Existing research on adoptive parenthood adjustment can be understood using the Family Stress Theory model. Adoptive parents' experiences of adoptive parenthood revealed similarities with biological parenthood, including shock, coping and adjustment, and identifying as a parent. A further finding, perhaps unique to adoptive parenthood, involved the resolving of complex conflicts in relation to adoption factors. Conclusion Family Stress Theory provides a useful framework for understanding the complexities of adoptive parenthood adjustment. Adjustment within adoptive parenthood mirrors to an extent what is observed in biological parenthood, but perhaps with greater complexity and intensity. Furthermore, adoptive parenthood is characterised by the resolving of complex conflicts. The findings further understanding of the complexities of late-placed adoption for first time parents.

Streszczenie:
Research into parents’ experiences of becoming parents is widespread. However research regarding therapy for parents, and how that may impact on the meanings parents give to parenthood is rare. In response to this lack of knowledge, this study explores parents’ experiences of counselling at SureStart children’s centres and how that experience affects their perceptions of themselves as parents, and their on-going experience of parenthood. The study was conducted using phenomenological methodology. Data was collected via four semi-structured interviews. Participants were parents who had received counselling at a local children’s centre. They had between two and four children each, aged between eight months and four years. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Three superordinate themes are evidenced – i. Who am I?, ii. Feeling out of Control and iii. Parenthood and Counselling. Parents’ sense of a parental identity and sense of agency changed when they became parents and over time, and therapy was used to explore these differences in experience. Despite accessing therapy, participants did not identify with people whom they thought of as needing mental health services. It is suggested that children’s centre counselling services could become a “gateway” to other parenting support as the parent learns to experience a therapeutic relationship, gains a better sense of agency, and trusts that the professionals are not judging them. The findings are examined in the light of the extant literature which suggests, for example, that parents may experience dissonance between their concept of “parent” and their concept of “client.” They may also find parenthood harder if their thinking is not “principle led”. The research findings indicate that there is still much to learn about this participant group, and suggestions are made for further research in this area.

Streszczenie:
Striking patterns of late fertility are now firmly entrenched within British demography. This rise in age at first birth has not been observed uniformly across fertility schedules, but represents an exit from parenthood during the mid to late twenties. Substantial numbers of men and women continue to become parents at an early age while growing numbers postpone parenthood. Socioeconomic differentials predict age at first parenthood, with those with advantaged characteristics being associated with postponement. However, this pattern is by no means clear, and current models reveal that a substantial portion of the variance in timing remains unexplained. The overarching hypothesis tested in this thesis using data from two nationally representative birth cohort studies is that the timing of parenthood is a joint product of socioeconomic factors and contextual factors: Contextual factors govern the transition to parenthood through influencing the perception of socioeconomic factors in addition to sanctioning normative fertility behaviour. This theory is tested using fertility histories from both men and women, and modelling contextual childhood predictors of the timing of parenthood using binary logistic and event history regression models. Through examining the characteristics of early parents and those who postpone parenthood, this thesis finds that values about fertility and the lifecourse predict parenthood at both ends of the fertility spectrum, independent of socioeconomic factors. Philoprogenetive tendencies predict both early parenthood and moderate projections of future childlessness, while dislike of school, low parental educational expectations and region of residence predict early parenthood. The definition of 'early' parenthood is also explored thoroughly and is contrasted as being both a political and social construct. The conclusion of this exploration is the derivation of relative and absolute binary definitions of 'early' that are used throughout the thesis resulting in novel distinctions being found between patterns of early motherhood and early fatherhood.

Streszczenie:
People, especially women, are delaying having children until later ages. The average age of first birth in the UK is now 29.5, an increase of six years over the past four decades. This may be problematic not only due to the fact that fertility declines with age (with a marked decrease after age 35) but also due to the fact that older age is associated with more complications during pregnancy and delivery to both mother and baby. Previous research has shown that although people have awareness of fertility risks and issues in general they often underestimate the risks and may not apply them to themselves. The aim of the present thesis is to examine reasons why people may be delaying childbearing, whether they know about the risks associated with reduced fertility and how we can better educate people about these risks.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss issues related to multiparentality in the current society, which emerges from contemporary changes originated on the second half of the 20th Century, with the increase of legal divorces that occurred. The approach to the topic is given by analyzing the origin and the concept of the term parentality, native of the French language. The theme is studied also through the consideration of maternal and paternal roles, related or not to biological genders of father and mother. The work is original when it regards, in clinical observations, the necessity of the elaboration of mourning for the loss of internal objets in order to appropriate the positive contigencies of multiparentality

Under the modern sociocultural reality, parenthood is highly prioritised among the issues of education of children and their integration into the social space. The positioning of parenthood in the framework of public discourse suggests a so-called ‘parenthood turn’ where parenthood is the key to understanding and addressing the widest range of issues related to the social identity of personality. The purpose of this article is to examine the main parenthood implementation patterns existing in the space of contemporary culture, and to research into publicity and privacy in the context of each of the concerned patterns. The methodological basis of the study is represented by systemic, ethno-psychological, and phenomenological approaches allowing us to analyse the parenthood phenomenon in terms of super-individual and subjective-personal determination, and to highlight discursive parenthood patterns implementable within the space of contemporary culture. The article covers such concepts as ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ parenthood. The main markers characterising these concepts have been presented. The mobility of the modern sociocultural reality, the transparency of national and cultural boundaries sets a number of prerequisites that change the sociocultural perception of parenthood. As transmittable within the framework of public discourse, these prerequisites at the level of personal choice are implementable throughout the range of possible patterns of parenthood. The diversity and variability of the parenthood experience implementation implies the extension of boundaries of parenthood normativity in culture. That said, the normativity criteria shall be set up both on the basis of external social-demographic, economical, and other prerequisites, and much more on the maturity of inner attitudes of the parent understanding and accepting the permanency of the parenthood experience, and taking on the responsibility for the freedom assumed under this permanency.

The report considers the difficulties of adaptation to parenthood in the post-natal period. It dicusses current conditions and problems parents experience after childbirth. The main factors of disadaptation to parenthood are highlighted: a lack of readiness for a real life situation, lack of motivation, parental incompetence. The report defines the area of psychological assistance in the post-natal period. Psychology of parenthood is a modern trend of psychological science and practice, focused on psychological assistance to adults at different stages of parenthood: children's birth planning, preparation for pregnancy and childbirth, pregnancy, childbirth, adaptation to parenthood after childbirth, all subsequent stages of growing and upbringing children. In Russian psychology, parenthood is considered as activity (PA – parental activity), which has all the components of the structure of activities: motivational, executive, psychological readiness to activities, conditions of activities, actors (parents), an object of actions (a child), and others. д.

Streszczenie:
Background: The shift in women’s fertility and birth rate to the higher age is characterized as the most significant feature of reproductive behaviour over the past decades in the Czech Republic (and in other developed countries). The trend of the so-called delayed or late pregnancy/motherhood/parenthood is determined by polyfactorial influences with possible risk impacts on the biomedical and psychosocial aspects of the health of mothers, fathers, children and society as such. In 2020, the following project was implemented: 50/2020/PPZ/OKD In Time – responsible, erudite, planned and prepared parenthood – The shaping and development of health literacy in the area of reproductive health among young adults (university students). The project was supported by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and the Faculty of Education, Palacký University Olomouc. The outcomes of the project are of both educational and research nature. Method(s): The Research on the cognitive and affective dimensions of young adults in the area of early pregnancy/parenthood involving a sample of 844 student respondents from 14 universities in the Czech Republic evaluated the level of knowledge of health literacy with an emphasis on the general area of sexual and reproductive health as well as the specific area of possible risks associated with delayed/late pregnancy/parenthood. The research also focused on the personality and attitude dimensions of young adults in the context of delayed and late pregnancy. Results: In a specific area of sexual and reproductive health, the level of knowledge was problematic, sometimes even insufficient. An alarming fact is the complete lack of knowledge concerning the probability of conception during a single ovulation cycle of a young woman (18–30 years). Surprisingly, the correct answer was identified by less than 2% of female university students. The complete set of results of the research is published in the monograph In Time: The cognitive and affective dimensions of young adults in relation to pregnancy and parenthood. Conclusions: The unfavourable level of health literacy concerning early pregnancy/parenthood may have a negative effect on the affective and behavioural dimension of young adults and support the 63 manifestations of possible bio-psycho-social risks and complications resulting from the trends of shifting motherhood/parenthood to higher age bands. It is thus necessary to educate the young generation by means of adequate didactic procedures in order for them to be able to make informed decisions about whether and when to have a child.

Streszczenie:
The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) is one of the most active nongovernmental organizations delivering reproductive health (RH) services in Ghana, focusing particularly on youth issues and services. USAID suggested to the Population Council’s Africa OR/TA Project II staff that PPAG might benefit from technical assistance. A large and well-funded IPPF program to promote sexual health among youth of the Volta Region offered a good opportunity to begin OR work. Earlier, the program was envisioned as a demonstration educational program of five years duration. Further discussions suggested that this program was unlikely to be duplicated anywhere, because of its high cost and because the design of the evaluation did not include a comparison area. As a result, even if the surveys documented change in the program it would be unclear how much change resulted from program activities and how much resulted from other, nonprogram factors. It was PPAG’s assessment that IPPF would appreciate an OR approach more than a demonstration approach to sexual health issues for youth. Therefore, as detailed in this report, Africa OR/TA Project II and PPAG developed a project to strengthen PPAG’s research capacity.
