Background Burnout has consistently been identified as an issue in health professionals, with paramedics in particular frequently noted to have high burnout rates. Objectives: The current study aimed to describe the prevalence of total work burnout in paramedics and of three subcategories: persona1, workrelated and patient-related burnout. Material and methods: This cross-sectional online survey presented the Copenhagen Burnout lnventory (CBI) to a national convenience sample (n=393) over a 5-week period from October-November 2021. Results: The primary outcome was prevalence of total burnout (%). Secondary outcomes were prevalence of subgroups of burnout and predictive factors. More than half (56.15%) of respondents were determined to have total burnout at the time of completing the survey; 46.4% had patientrelated burnout; 62.3% had work-related burnout; and 71.9% had personal-related burnout. Females, city work location, and having worked for 15-19 years as a paramedic were all predictive of total burnout. Conclusion: The study showed high prevalence of total burnout among this sample of paramedics.

AbstractIntroduction:In treating accident victims, actions by the Emergency Medical Personnel (EMP) at the scene may be the difference between life or death, full recovery or permanent disability. Development of selected profiles based on locale of services, tenure, and paramedic certification will provide valuable insight into the diversity within the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) profession. Not only will these profiles enable administrators to improve their recruitment, training, and retention of the emergency medical workforce, it potentially could enhance the quality of health care in the community.Population:Emergency medical personnel attending a statewide conference in Texas in late 1996 (n = 425).Hypotheses:1) There is no difference between the profiles of urban and rural emergency medical personnel; 2) There is no difference between the profiles of urban EMP with <9 years of experience and those with ≥9 years of experience; 3) There is no difference between the profiles of rural EMP with <9 years of experience and those with ≥9 years of experience. 4) There is no difference between the profiles of urban EMP with paramedic certification and those without certification; and 5) There is no difference between the profiles of rural EMP with paramedic certification and those without certification.Methods:EMP attending the conference completed 425 survey instruments measuring five demographic features, five work-related features, and two psychological features. Survey instruments were included in each registrant's conference package. Completed surveys were deposited anonymously in labeled receptacles throughout the statewide conference site. Data collection ceased at the end of the conference. Discriminant analysis identified distinct profiles for the urban and rural EMP.Results:The urban EMP, more than rural subjects, was younger (mean = 36 years), more likely to be compensated 100% for their services, had a higher level of education (mean = 13.8 years), and reported a lower level of burnout. Urban EMP with <9 years of experience tended to be younger, male, married, and reported less burnout. Urban paramedics were more likely to be compensated 100% for their services, and had achieved a higher level of education. The rural EMP with <9 years of experience were less likely to be paramedic, reported lower burnout scores, and was younger. The rural EMP without paramedic certification was more likely to be a volunteer, and have had fewer years of service.Conclusions:In Texas, locale of service (urban or rural), length of tenure as an EMP (>9 years), and paramedic certification appear to be significant factors that define the EMP population in Texas.

Introduction: Contemporary healthcare faces new challenges and expectations from society. The profession of a nurse, as well as a paramedic, is essential for the efficient functioning of healthcare. It has its importance not only in promoting and preserving health but also in prevention. With the increasing importance of providing medical care at the highest level, it is expected of these two professional groups to have more knowledge and skills than a few years earlier. The daily contact with patients and their families, the low level of control of the environment, the hierarchical system of professional dependence, and the dissatisfaction with remuneration are becoming extremely burdensome aspects of the nursing and paramedic professions. Long-term exposure to stressors associated with these medical professions may, in the long term, lead to the emergence of occupational burnout syndrome. The aim of this study is an attempt to answer the question of whether and how stress factors affect the occurrence of occupational burnout in the work of nurses and paramedics working in various medical entities. Material and Methods: The study covered a group of 434 respondents, including 220 nurses and 214 paramedics, working professionally in hospital departments and care and treatment facilities as well as in hospital emergency departments and ambulance services. The study was carried out using a diagnostic survey based on the questionnaire technique using the authors’ questionnaire and the standardized MBI Ch. Maslach. Two statistical values were used to statistically analyze the research results and verify the adopted hypotheses: the chi-square test and the Student’s t-test. Results and Conclusions: The current study showed that the phenomenon of occupational burnout among the studied group affects only nurses, while this problem does not apply to the studied paramedics. The main stressor among the nurses and paramedics is, above all, a very high level of responsibility. Nurses are overburdened by excessive demands and shift work, while paramedics are mostly burdened by an excess of duties. Both nurses and paramedics claim that their work is often stressful, which leads to physical and mental exhaustion.

Healthcare delivery relies on human resource management to ensure quality. However, employee performance dropped from 2019 to 2022, highlighting the need to address job fatigue, which lowers performance. This study examines how mindfulness and emotional intelligence mediate the effects of occupational fatigue on medical and paramedic performance. This integrated study intends to understand healthcare job performance and improve medical professionals' competency and well-being in Indonesia. A 5% margin of error was used to choose 213 medical staff and paramedics from the Mojokerto City Government Health Agency in Indonesia using the Slovin algorithm. The Sobel Test and SEM with AMOS were used to analyse data. Mindfulness and emotional intelligence decreased considerably with job burnout, affecting job performance. Mindfulness and emotional intelligence also improved job performance. The results also showed that emotional intelligence and mindfulness moderate the job burnout-performance link. These findings show that emotional and psychological aspects are crucial to understanding how job fatigue affects employee performance.

AbstractIntroduction:The number of paramedics in Israel is increasing. Despite this growth and important role, the emergency medical organizations lack information about the characteristics of their work.Objective:The objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of the paramedics' work, the quality of their working lives, the factors that keep them in the profession, or conversely, draw them away from it.Methods:Cross-sectional study conducted through telephone interviews of a random sample of 50% of the graduates of paramedic courses in Israel (excluding conscripted soldiers).Results:The factors that attract paramedics to the profession have much to do with the essence of the job—rescuing and saving—and a love of what it involves, as well as interest and variety. Pressures at work result from having to cope with a lack of administrative support, paperwork, long hours, imbalance between work and family life, and salary. They do not come from having to cope with responsibility, the pressure of working under uncertain conditions, and the sudden transition from calm situations to emergencies. Dissatisfaction at work is caused by burnout, work overload, and poor health. Physical and mental health that impedes their ability to work is related to a sense of burnout and the intention to change professions.Conclusions:The findings about the relationships between health, job satisfaction, and burnout, coupled with the fact that within a decade, half of the currently employed paramedics will reach an age at which it is hard for them to perform their job, lead to the conclusion that there is a need to reconsider the optimum length of service in the profession. There also is a need to form organizational arrangements to change the work procedures of aging paramedics.

BackgroundParamedics are frequently exposed to traumatic events as part of their role. The implications of this constant exposure have suggested that paramedics are at high risk of developing long-term mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, burnout, trauma, PTSD, and suicide.PurposeTo synthesise studies to examine factors that play a role in the development of mental health difficulties in ambulance personnel. As well as, establishing gaps within the literature for further research.Data SourcesFrom the first 77 published journals reviewed from Psycinfo, PsychArticles, CINAHL, Education Research Complete, ERIC and grey literature, 15 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review and were included in the present study.ResultsFindings of this review suggest that the mental health and wellbeing of paramedics are significant issues. In reviewing the research, it was found that several different factors may play a role in the development of mental health difficulties in ambulance personnel. Four main themes were determined, (1) occupational stressors, (2) negative attitude towards emotional expression, (3) peer and social support, and (4) preparing paramedics for mental health challenges.ConclusionsIt is paramount for further research to explore paramedic students’ mental health experiences, as well as a focus on research to investigate a UK paramedic population due to most of the literature focusing on an international population. Psychological support and early interventions should be made a priority for all ambulance workers, as a way of improving the quality of the working life of paramedics.

<sec id="s1"> Aims: To assess the prevalence of burnout among emergency ambulance service workers in one ambulance station; to determine if there are any variances based on socio-demographic information such as gender, clinical grade and length of service; to examine the distinctions between personal, work-related and patient-related burnout; to identify current workplace interventions to reduce stress and burnout that will improve mental health and well-being. </sec> <sec id="s2"> Methods: Mixed methods ‐ the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) was utilised, measuring burnout across three domains (personal, work-related and patient-related) alongside collecting demographic information such as gender, role, full-time or part-time employment and length of service. A free-text space was available to provide opinions on causes of burnout and on how current practice can be improved; these were analysed via thematic analysis. </sec> <sec id="s3"> Results: Seventy-eight staff members completed the questionnaire. These were: 16 emergency care assistants, 15 technicians and 47 paramedics. Thirty-eight (48.7%) staff members experienced personal burnout, 42 (53.8%) experienced work-related burnout and 29 (37.1%) experienced patient-related burnout. It was found that those most at risk of burnout were full-time male employees with more than 10 years’ experience and employed within a paramedic position. Six themes were identified through thematic analysis: unnecessary callouts, shift patterns, support options, management, sickness absence and job demands. </sec> <sec id="s4"> Conclusion: Findings suggest that burnout is prevalent within the ambulance service environment and can result in long-term sickness absences and declining mental health. This requires further investigation into causation alongside consideration of preventative measures and interventions to improve ambulance service staff well-being while increasing staff resilience to prevent burnout. Support for managers in recognising symptoms of burnout is also imperative because providing them with the training to recognise a mental health issue, interpret it and promptly treat it can mean the difference between sickness absences, future PTSD, unwell staff presenting at work and staff feeling valued and supported by management. The introduction of mandatory counselling and well-being sessions was also recommended by participants to improve staff mental health and well-being and reduce instances of work-related burnout, while providing financial advantages to the ambulance service with a reduction in additional overtime and sickness payments. </sec>

Background: Staff retention is a significant issue for ambulance services across the globe. Exploratory research, although minimal, indicates that stress and burnout, in particular, influence attrition within the paramedic profession. These need to be understood if their impact on retention is to be addressed. Aims: To determine the presence of and contributory factors for burnout in the ambulance service to inform recommendations for positive change. Methods: A two-phased survey approach was adopted using an adapted Maslach Burnout Inventory and Copenhagen self-assessment burnout questionnaire, to measure levels of burnout, depersonalisation (cynicism) and personal achievement. Open-ended questions explored factors that influenced these. Demographic and comparative analysis identified trends and thematic analysis was carried out on the qualitative data. Results: Ninety-four per cent of ambulance staff in this study (n=382) reported a sense of personal achievement within their professional role; however, more than 50% were experiencing varying levels of burnout with 87% displaying moderate or high levels of depersonalisation towards their work. Causes of stress were complex: themes attributed were a perceived lack of management support, the public's misuse of the ambulance service, involuntary overtime and a poor work-life balance. Conclusions: Burnout poses a genuine threat to retention in the ambulance service and needs addressing. Proactive screening, better communication between practice staff and management and access to counselling services are recommended. This problem of burnout is beginning to be acknowledged but further evidence is needed to understand it in more depth in order for effective solutions to be developed.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have shown that the suicide of a patient can produce posttraumatic and depressive symptoms among the mental health care providers, who typically have high levels of baseline burnout. OBJECTIVES: To measure posttraumatic, depressive and burnout symptoms in the staff of an inpatient psychiatric unit after the suicide of a patient. METHODS: Two months after the suicide all the employees were invited to answer, anonymously, the Posttraumatic Check-List (PCL), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), for measuring posttraumatic, depressive, and burnout symptoms, respectively. RESULTS: Over 80% of the staff participated. A total of 17.1% had probable PTSD, 19.5% probable major depression, 24.4% and 14.6% high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, respectively, and 24.4% low levels of professional accomplishment. The group consisting of nurses, paramedic technicians, and nursing assistants ("nursing staff") had PTSD significantly greater than other workers (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Suicide in a psychiatric ward can produce posttraumatic and depressive symptoms among the staff, as high as another kind of traumas. The impact may be greater on the nursing staff. It is essential that organizations involved in the provision or teaching of mental health care incorporate this reality into their agenda, to prevent, mitigate and respond better to this phenomenon.

Purpose: This is a review to assess the working conditions that affect the stress level of paramedics and their ability to cope with stress. The profession of a paramedic is characterized by constant contact with other people and exposure to many factors, including biological (HIV, flu virus), chemical (causing allergic reactions, burns) physical (noise, low or excessive temperature), psychosocial (aggression, violence, traumatic experiences).
Methodology: This is a Systematic review paper. The PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google scholar search were used to analyze the problem. The following keywords were used to search for information sources: paramedic, working conditions, medical rescue, ambulance, stress, coping with stress. Articles were selected according to the impact of working conditions on stress and its consequences among the group of paramedics.
Main Findings: The work of a rescuer is a constant action under the influence of a high level of stress and emotions, caused by an unforeseen sequence of events and time pressure. The long-term presence of negative factors is the cause of the appearance of burnout syndrome, rumination, PTSD, and somatic symptoms related to stress in the workplace. It can result in a deterioration of the quality of patient care.
Implications of this study: The above results should be taken into account by units of the emergency medical care system. The paper indicates the occurrence of negative psychological effects of work-related stress and as a consequence the need to train the personnel in the field of stress-coping techniques and to provide emergency medical service workers with mental health monitoring and psychological care in the workplace.
Novelty in this study: There is a lack of systematic reviews of the impact of working conditions on the mental health of workers in emergency medical care services. The paper is an attempt to assess the impact of working conditions on stress and its effects on the group of paramedics and other emergencies medical care system employees.

Introduction. The issues of sanitary and epidemiological welfare in workers when performing diving operations require close attention from the state, are part of the structure of the Concept of development of diving in Russia, and are relevant to society. To date, there are several problems not only in hygienic rationing, but also in the medical provision of diving operations. The purpose of the study is to study working conditions and subjective assessment of the health status of employees when performing diving operations, to develop proposals for improving legislation. Materials and methods. The analysis of normative legal acts and scientific literature on the protection of the health and labor of divers is carried out. A survey of fifty diving workers was carried out. Results. The main problems in the management of diving operations have been identified: in 15% of organizations there is no production control program, in 49% of organizations there is no therapeutic and preventive nutrition. There is no medical worker at the site of diving descents, if signs of decompression sickness or lung barotrauma are detected, therapeutic recompression is carried out in 46% of cases before the arrival of a diving doctor (paramedic) on their own. During the descents, 30% of respondents experienced fatigue, tiredness, headache, while all of them underwent mandatory medical examinations in private healthcare institutions; 18% of respondents indicated symptoms of hypothermia. At the same time, more than 60% of respondents were revealed to be subject to occupational burnout. Limitation of the study is the lack of data on the results of preliminary and periodic medical examinations of respondents. Conclusion. At the present stage, the system of ensuring sanitary and epidemiological welfare during diving operations requires improvement both in terms of state rationing, accounting and control, and compliance with health-saving preventive measures by employers and employees. In particular, attention should be paid to the direction of studying the development of occupational burnout in divers and to elaborate the system of prevention.

BackgroundEmpathy is core to human relationships and essential to patient centred healthcare. However, there are concerns that increased emotional connection increases distress for workers, leading to burnout. Empathy research within the ambulance sector is limited and has primarily involved paramedic students. The range of models and measures used in empathy research have led to mixed results and difficulties interpreting implications. Differentiation of components of empathy is needed. Vicarious pain experience has played a prominent role in empathy research, has bought insight into mechanism and is highly relevant within healthcare. This study uses a multidimensional approach to compare empathy and vicarious pain experience amongst emergency ambulance workers and a general population group.Method128 participants, including 78 emergency ambulance workers were recruited within Yorkshire Ambulance Service and in the South Yorkshire area. Empathy levels were measured using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index subscales of fantasy, perspective taking, empathetic concern and personal distress. Vicarious pain responses were categorised using the Vicarious Pain Questionnaire. The study analysed between group differences in empathy sub-scale levels and the effect of emergency ambulance experience on empathy levels. In addition, between group differences in vicarious pain experience were assessed.ResultsLower levels of empathy were identified for emergency ambulance workers on the fantasy (p=.012, 95% CI =0.09-0.83), empathetic concern (p=.002) and personal distress (p<.001) scales. Perspective taking abilities (p=.303) were not found to be significantly reduced. Amongst emergency ambulance workers levels of personal distress decreased with experience (p=.028). Emergency ambulance workers were less likely to experience conscious vicarious pain than others (p=.02).ConclusionsDifferentiating factors of empathy bought insight. Interventions to increase empathy amongst emergency ambulance workers should focus on building the capacity for empathetic concern, while preserving perspective taking abilities. Work to reduce personal distress of those in the early stages of their career is warranted.

A survey-based study was conducted among 213 advanced emergency medical technicians (paramedics) to determine if work-related stress and its attendant burnout syndrome could influence the high job dissatisfaction reported by this group. Using Jones' Staff Burnout Scale for Health Professionals, the highest mean burnout score yet reported for any group of health professionals was obtained. of 23 possible correlates of the measure, 18 were associated with burnout. A multiple regression procedure produced a model containing eight independent predictors of burnout. On the whole, the study indicates alarmingly high work-stress burnout among paramedics, which is associated with a rather complex set of correlates. Implications of the study, including job requirement changes for paramedics, are also discussed.

Introduction: The burnout syndrome is characteristic for people who face constant human interaction in their work. Health care professionals are listed in this category. Aim: The aim of this paper was to determine the scope of the burnout syndrome and to assess the degree of burnout among health care professionals. Material and Methods: The study was conducted among a population of 110 nurses and paramedics working in the Opole Province. The research tool used was an own questionnaire, the MBI Ch. Maslach burnout questionnaire and the PSS – 10 scale (Perceived Stress Scale). Results: The results show that passivity and uncertainty in dealing with people (33%) and low mental resilience (29%) are the main personality traits that influence the occurrence of burnout. Conclusions: Professional burnout occurs in all three dimensions of the syndrome, with varying degrees of severity, among health care professionals.

The Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world and claimed millions of lives has resulted in an increase in the excessive workload on paramedics. This condition places paramedics at risk of exposure to the Covid-19 virus, as well as increases the risk of burnout syndrome or mental fatigue.The research aims to analyze the quality of work life (QWL) and burnout on the performance of paramedics with job satisfaction as a mediating variable. The research was conducted on paramedics at Grati Hospital, Pasuruan Regency, using a saturated sampling technique. Data analysis used SEM-PLS with SmartPLS 3.2.9 software. The results showed that paramedics' job satisfaction and QWL had a significant positive effect, while burnout had a significant negative effect on paramedics' performance. Meanwhile QWL proved to have a significant positive effect on paramedics' job satisfaction. The results of the indirect effect prove that paramedics' job satisfaction is able to mediate the relationship between QWL and paramedics' performance.

Corona Virus disease has been proved a global health risk and put an extraordinary effect on paramedics and security workers around the world. Our aim is to explore the prevalence of burnout and anxiety among paramedics and security workers during COVID-19 era through quantitative research method. The level of burnout, and anxiety were measured by Oldenburg burnout inventory and Zung self-rating anxiety scale, respectively .We found that 21% of sample was affected by anxiety, 48% faced high level burnout whereas 40 % faced medium level burnout. There was also positive relationship between anxiety and burnout as p value was less than 0.05. This epidemic can cause anxiety and stress in healthcare workers, which can in turn give rise to multiple mental health issues like burnout, anxiety and depression. Precautionary measures as well as early diagnosis and coping strategies can play vital role during this pandemic time frame. Keywords: Burnout, Anxiety, COVID-19.

Purpose: This study was done to give a description of types of paramedics' burnout and explore nursing intervention for each type. Methods: This study was a Q-methodological approach. The Q-sample was made up with 28 statements. The P-sample was 28 paramedics who were working at a fire department in 2 regions. The P-sample sorted the Q-sample for burnout. The data was analyzed by using a PC QUANL program. Results: It was classified by 4 types. Recharging pursuers regarded giving chances of recharging as important. Escapers strongly agreed with frustration and quitting his or her job. And, Ennui type was selected because they got fatigued with his or her work due to exhaustion and dissatisfaction. Finally, Submission type was selected because they rated their job value high by doing his or her best. Conclusion: It is necessary to be approached by types of characteristics in order to control paramedics' burnout effectively. Moreover it is needed to develop programs to relieve or prevent stress which causes burnout.

Burnout and stress-related issues are significant concerns among medical personnel involved in emergency situations due to the high demands of their work. A cross-sectional descriptive and comparative study was conducted on 266 prehospital emergency personnel across five Romanian counties, comprising 41 physicians, 74 nurses, and 151 paramedics. Data were collected through an online form, including demographic and professional characteristics, and five validated scales. This study revealed moderate (49.3%) to high (25.9%) burnout rates, with 35% showing signs of work addiction. Despite these challenges, the personnel demonstrated high levels of stress-related growth (61.2%), strong self-discipline (74.1%), and low to moderate responsive distress (100%). Physicians exhibited higher work addiction and job satisfaction, whereas paramedics faced higher burnout, self-discipline, and distress levels. Nurses showed lower burnout and self-discipline levels. These findings highlight the prevalence of burnout and work addiction among emergency medical personnel, while also underscoring the presence of protective factors like higher self-discipline, good level of stress-related growth, and low to moderate responsive distress. The distinct differences in experiences among physicians, nurses, and paramedics emphasize the need for tailored strategies to address these issues within each group.

Health Care Professionals (HCPs) are professionals who provide comprehensive care to patients, including medical documentation. During the migration from manual medical records to electronic medical records (EMR), the documentation process can pose additional challenges and induce stress, as HCPs must adapt to a new documentation process and face the risk of errors in documentation. This situation can lead to burnout related to the migration of medical records. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing burnout among HCPs during the migration of medical records at Mitra Paramedika Hospital. A correlational study was conducted involving 67 HCPs in the outpatient unit of Mitra Paramedika Hospital. Burnout data were collected through the distribution of a modified Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25 with the Cramer's V & Somer’s D statistical test. The evaluation revealed that the average burnout score among HCPs related to the migration of medical records was 1.86, categorizing it as moderate burnout. Factors such as respondents' age, gender, marital status, years of service, and profession had no significant impact on burnout among HCPs in the outpatient unit of Mitra Paramedika Hospital. Only educational status that significantly correlated to burnout in our study. Further assessment is required to explore another factors of burnout among HCPs during EMR migration.

Understanding the extent, nature, and cause of burnout is crucial to improving employee morale and performance.Study Population:Ninety-one FF/EMT-Ps employed by Salt Lake County Fire Department.Hypotheses:Three specific hypotheses were tested: 1) FF/EMT-Ps who score high on burnout also will score high on authoritarianism; 2) FF/EMT-Ps who score high on burnout also will score high on inner-directedness; and 3) FF/EMT-Ps who score high on burnout also will score high on sensation seeking.Methods:In this descriptive study, FF/EMT-Ps computed four standardized instruments measuring authoritarianism, burnout, inner-directedness versus other-directedness and sensation seeking.Results:Firefighters who scored high on burnout also scored high on authoritarianism and on the sensation-seeking subscale of boredom. Burnout did not correlate with the overall sensation-seeking scale or with its other subscales (thrill, experience, and disinhibition), or inner-directedness versus other-directedness.Conclusion:A focus on control issues needs to be an integral part of programs for decreasing employee burnout among FF/EMT-Ps. Specific components of such programs should include stress management and counseling. In addition, management personnel need to be taught not only to assist direct-service staff, but also to recognize and deal with their own control issues as they affect job performance.

Background: Burnout is increasingly being recognized as a major concern, affecting the physical and mental well-being of Healthcare workers (HCWs). Objective:The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence of occupational exhaustion in healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, paramedics, assistants, administrative staff) and possible contributing factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study was conducted from March to September 2022 in seven (7) hospitals in Western Greece. It was carried out using an anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed based on results of previously published studies and consisted of 22 multiple-choice questions. Results: There were 259 (60.2%) female and 178 (39.8%) male participants enrolled in the study. The majority of the respondents were nurses (n=207, 48.1%), followed by doctors (n+ 178, 41.4%). There was a marked increase in emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal fulfillment and pandemic-related total burnout in participants older than 61 years old (40,05±2,2, 27,16±1,0, 21,11±4,1, 88,32±4,3, respectively). Widow/ers healthcare workers were mostly affected from pandemic related burnout compared to married, unmarried, and divorced healthcare workers. Respondents without postgraduate education demonstrated significantly greater prevalence of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and pandemic-related total burnout in comparison to those with doctoral/master degree. The prevalence of personal and work-related burnout among paramedics and administrative staff was higher than that seen in doctors and nurses(32,82±3,8 vs32,08±5,0/29,11±4,7 22,33±4,0 vs21,57±3,1/18,89±5,4 19,60±3,9 vs17,26±2,8/15,24±3,7 74,76±10,4 vs70,92±9,5/63,23±12,1).The prevalence of emotional exhaustion and work-related total burnout was significantly higher among doctors, nurses, paramedics, and administrative staff working with direct contact with COVID-19 patients than those among healthcare workers working without direct contact with COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: The present study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers.

Objectives To evaluate the socio-demographic profile and burnout among frontline doctors, paramedical, and other supporting staff in dedicated tertiary COVID hospitals. Materials and Methods The samples taken were divided into three groups as follows: Doctors, paramedical staff, and other supporting staff working in a tertiary hospital dedicated to handling the COVID-19 pandemic at SKIMS-MCH Bemina Hospital. Results In this study, a total of 185 participants took part out of which 388 individuals were employed across the medical departments of this hospital. This was an overall response rate of 47.6%. Most participants were in the age group of 31–50 years (48.6%). Males comprised 53.5%, married 66.4%, living with family 82.7%, and as per job description, most responses were from paramedical staff (53.51%). On analysis of the mean ± SD score of burnout across individual socio-demographic variables predominant burnout was seen in paramedical staff (45 ± 5.2) followed by those living with family (42 ± 3.7), married (43 ± 1.2), and those older than 50 years (40 ± 3.9). Conclusion Our study showed that the high prevalence of burnout was among healthcare professionals in the tertiary hospital who were exposed to working and catering large population with serious healthcare and emergency issues caring for patients during the new pandemic. Factors such as female gender, living with family, and older age of healthcare professionals were associated with significant burnout. These findings can help to improve the preparedness for the future.

Introduction: Previous literature suggests that emergency medicine physicians experience high levels of work-related burnout. However, these results are drawn primarily from physicians working in large urban emergency departments. The aim of this study was to compare physician wellness between emergency medicine physicians working in urban versus rural settings. Methods: Emergency medicine physicians were recruited to complete a wellness survey from both urban and rural emergency medicine departments in Southwestern Ontario. The primary outcome measure of interest was physician burnout as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). This survey tool measures physician burnout in the three domains of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to analyze parametric and non-parametric burnout domain data respectively. Results: Surveys were completed by 67/99 (68%) and 22/66 (33%) of urban and rural emergency medicine physicians, respectively. An emotional exhaustion score ≥27 OR a depersonalization sub-score ≥10 was considered the threshold for burnout and was found in 71.4% (40/56) of urban physicians surveyed and 85.7% (18/21) (P = 0.20) of rural physicians. No statistically significant difference in mean emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, or personal accomplishment was noted between groups. Conclusion: High levels of burnout were noted amongst both urban and rural emergency medicine physicians. No statistically significant differences were noted between groups when compared on the Maslach Burnout Inventory survey tool. Despite many factors differentiating urban from rural practice, rural emergency doctors suffer similar rates of burnout. Thematic qualitative interviews exploring specific burnout factors may offer further insight into the drivers of physician burnout.

Background. The phenomenon of burnout among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic is a widespread problem with several negative consequences for the healthcare system. The many stressors of the pandemic have led to an increased development of anxiety and depressive disorders in many healthcare workers. In addition, some manifested symptoms of the so-called postpandemic stress syndrome and the emergence of occupational burnout syndrome, commonly referred to as “COVID-19 burnout.” The aim of this study was to assess the burnout and life satisfaction of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted in 2020-2022 among medical staff working in hospitals in Silesia, Poland. The instruments used to assess life satisfaction and burnout were the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which assesses three dimensions: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DEP), and sense of reduced professional accomplishment (SRPA). Results. The study group included 900 participants. There were 300 physicians (mean age 38±7 years), 300 nurses (mean age 35±6 years), and 300 paramedics (mean age 31±5 years). Life satisfaction as measured by the SWLS was lowest among nurses and paramedics in 2021 and among doctors in 2022. Male respondents and those with fewer years of work had higher levels of life satisfaction. People with more years of work had higher scores in EE and DEP and lower scores in SRPA (p=0.001). We found a negative correlation between life satisfaction and EE (p=0.001), DEP (p=0.001), and SRPA (p=0.002). Conclusions. The results highlight the need for further research into the causes of burnout among medical professionals and the need for effective interventions to promote well-being and prevent burnout in this group.

Purpose Violence directed at ambulance paramedics has attracted increasing public attention because of its major negative impact on the physical and psychological well-being of victims and productivity of organisations. The purpose of this paper is to explore the prevalence of violent incidents, contributing factors, burnout and post-traumatic symptoms among paramedics. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional survey was distributed in two ambulance services in Tasmania and South Australia, with self-administered instruments completed online. In total, 48 respondents completed questionnaires. Findings There were no significant differences between sites in timing of violent incidents, consequences of traumatic events or organisation provision. Surprisingly, over 90 per cent of paramedics had not been pushed, slapped, beaten, scratched or spat on in the previous month. There was a statistically significant difference between genders for being yelled at or verbally abused (p=0.02). When considering burnout, female paramedics showed significantly higher levels of emotional exhaustion t(37)=–2.32, p=0.02 and lower levels of career satisfaction than their male counterparts, t(37)=3.32, p=0.00. Originality/value Although prevalence rates of violent incidents seemed lower than expected, policy interventions to encourage female paramedics to display their professional identities and steps to enhance well-being and safety while on duty should be considered.

Introduction The Burnout syndrome occurs preferentially in individuals subjected to intense stress conditions. The nursing staff in Obstetrics Gynecology is an example of this. Objectives To assess the prevalence of Burnout and its determinants in the obstetrics gynecology service - Mahdia. Methods We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study carried out with the medical and paramedical staff of the gynecology-obstetrics department of the Taher Sfar Mahdia hospital during a period of 3 months.We used a pre-established self-questionnaire containing 2 parts: a part exploring the socio-demographic data of the population and a psychometric part evaluating Burnt out using the “Maslach Burnout” scale inventory ”. Results Our sample consisted of 122 medical and paramedical personnel.The sex ratio was 4.3 (99/23), the mean age was 30.5 with values ranging from 25 to 55 years.Of the participants, 59 (48.3%) were single .Nine (7.4%) of the participants were smokers and 2 (1.6%) consumed alcohol.The majority of the population (96.7%) did not have a psychiatric history, 88 (80.3%) reported an organ history.A high level of burnout was noted in 64.8% of our population with 14.8% severe burnout. The presence of burnout was significantly associated with the consumption of psychoactive substances (p = 0.05) and professional rank (p = 0.04) .Nurses, residents and senior doctors werethose most at risk of developing burnout. It was also significantly related to the absence of other professional activities such as research (p = 0.05) and training continuing medical care (p = 0.05). Conclusions Psychological intervention strategies with these suffering health promoters would be desirable. Disclosure No significant relationships.

AbstractProfessional military personnel are exposed to a large number of stressors every day at a higher rate than the civilian population, which can lead to psychological disturbances, primarily anxiety, as well as burnout syndrome. The aim of our investigation was to determine the correlation between burnout syndrome and anxiety in military personnel of the Serbian Armed Forces.The cross-sectional study included a total of 311 professional military personnel (officers, non-commissioned officers and professional soldiers), between 23 to 53 years of age (35.3±7 years, on the average) without previous diagnosis of mental disorder. For purpose of this study we used Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). MBI contains three subscales, which measure three components of burnout: Emotional exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP) and Personal accomplishment (PA). The statistical analysis included parametric and non-parametric descriptive statistics.The highest level of burnout was measured on the sub-scales Emotional exhaustion (EE) in military personnel from 23 to 30 years old (p<0.05), while anxiety increased with age of military personnel (p<0.001). Total scores on the subscales Emotional exhaustion (EE) and Depersonalization (DP) increased, while on the subscale Personal accomplishment (PA) decreased with the increase of the total BAI score (p<0.001).There was a correlation between burnout syndrome and anxiety in professional military personnel of Serbian Armed Forces. Improving the financial situation, paid recreational breaks and reduction of professional obligations could decrease anxiety and affect the prevention of the occurrence of burnout syndrome in the military environment.

This study aims to find out and analyze how workload influences burnout in PT X’s employees. This research is a non-experimental quantitative study and uses non-probability sampling method with a purposive sampling type involving 317 PT X’s employees. The instruments used in this study are the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) to measure burnout variables and the Carga Mental Questionnaire (CarMen-Q) to measure workload variables. The analysis used is non-parametric analysis and uses Spearman rho correlation with testing through IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The results of this study are that there is a significant effect of workload on burnout in PT X’s employees.

Work-related suicide exposure may significantly contribute to the risk of burnout in first responders. This study assessed the exposure to suicide, burnout, and coping mechanisms in emergency medical services in Poland, including psychosocial determinants, such as age, gender, and access to psychological support. The level of burnout was assessed using the Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ), and coping was measured using the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). Data were analysed using a series of variance analyses and a partial least squares structural equation modelling. The study showed that 98% of emergency medical services personnel reported work-related suicide exposure. The LBQ score indicated symptoms of burnout, in particular relational deterioration, and the CISS showed low levels of emotion-oriented coping. Physicians reported higher levels of psycho-physical exhaustion than paramedics and nurses. Access to psychological support in the workplace was related to lower levels of burnout. Emergency medical services personnel are frequently exposed to suicide, which may be related to the risk of occupational burnout, and coping strategies used in this occupational group are often not optimal. Preventive measures, such as training emergency medical services personnel in regard to effective coping strategies, are needed, and personnel should be encouraged to access mental health services and supports.

Para peserta pendidikan kedokteran, dalam menjalankan tugasnya di Rumah Sakit Pendidikan memerlukan usaha dan kerja keras hingga terkadang menyebabkan permasalahan kesehatan. Sindrom burnout merupakan kondisi yang menggambarkan respon terhadap stres yang berhubungan dengan pekerjaan dengan kelelahan fisik, mental dan emosional yang relatif lama. Menjadi pemicu bagi beberapa dokter melakukan penelitian tentang kesehatan dan keberlanjutan paramedis, dengan mengangkat kembali isu tentang pentingnya ruang istirahat. Pendekatan teori Therapeutic Architercture sebagai salah satu penanganan dengan memodifikasi lingkungan diharapkan dapat membantu para peserta pendidikan kedokteran dalam menghadapi sindrom burnout. Tujauan penelitian ini untuk mempelajari bagaimana peserta pendidikan kedokteran meredakan burnout yang mereka hadapi melalui restorasi perhatian berdasarkan kegiatan/aktivitas. Metode penelitian yang akan digunakan menggunakan pendekatan metode kualitatif, mengelolah data menggunakan konten analisis, menyunting dan mengkodekan selanjutnya di uji menggunakan perangkat lunak statistik JMP. Variabel yang paling berpengaruh dalam upaya mengatasi burnout ialah “soft fascination” yang berhubungan dengan relaksasi dan rekreasi, yang mendukung konsep Therapeutic Architecture. Menghadirkan suasana layaknya rumah, dengan variabel lingkungan arsitektur yang dapat di terapkan pada ruang istirahat dokter. Hingga dapat menurunkan burnout pada para peserta pendidikan kedokteran.

Introduction. Health preservation for public health care workers, by means of psycho-rehabilitation programs managing stress in medical establishments, is a topical medical, psychologic and economic task.Objective. To study levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievements reduction as psychologic burnout factors in workers of primary health care, depending on position and educational level, with specification of psychologic rehabilitation program and evaluation of its efficiency.Materials and methods. The study covered 137 female medical workers of outpatient departments in Moscow, with emotional burnout syndrome and length of service at least 5 years. Emotional burnout syndrome was assessed via a questionnaire «Occupational burnout» including 3 scales: «Emotional exhaustion» (1), «Depersonalization» (2) and «Personal achievements reduction» (3). 3 groups of the examinees were identified: group 1 — senior officers (15), group 2 — doctors (40), group 3 — nurses and paramedical personnel (82). All the examinees underwent 8 weeks of psychologic rehabilitation based on training of stress-resistance, personality development and relaxation methods.Results. Groups 1 and 2 demonstrated medium (scales 1 and 3) and high (scale 2) levels of emotional burnout syndrome, and the group 3 presented medium (scale 3) and low (scales 1 and 2) levels. All the groups responded positively on psychologic rehabilitation that decreased emotional exhaustion, increased responsibility for daily duties, improved and stabilized self-esteem.Conclusions. Manifestations of emotional burnout syndrome depend on peculiarities of medical workers’ occupational activities, position and educational level. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are more marked in senior officers and in doctors, than in nurses and paramedical personnel. Self-evaluation of occupational competence and activities is the same among all categoriesof the medical workers. psychologic rehabilitation enables to decrease symptoms of emotional burnout syndrome and is an important component of programs preserving working potential of medical establishments.

This study was an exploration of COVID-19 anxiety and its relationship with teacher burnout. The study was a cross-sectional survey research design with a convenience sample drawn from a population of K-12 public school teachers. A non-parametric statistical test, Kruskal-Wallis, showed a statistically significant difference in teacher burnout across the three grade levels: χ2 (2, N = 61) = 6.20, p = .045. Teacher burnout was lowest amongst elementary school teachers (M = 47.00) when compared to middle school (M = 74.00) and high school teachers (M = 71.00). Implications include a need for increased administrative support and decreased stress levels for teachers.

Effective workplace-based interventions after critical incidents (CIs) are needed for emergency medical technicians (EMT)/paramedics. The evidence for a period out of service post-CI (downtime) is sparse; however it may prevent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and burnout symptoms. We examined the hypothesis that downtime post-CI is associated with fewer symptoms of four long-term emotional sequelae in EMT/paramedics: depression, PTSD, burnout, and stress-related emotional symptoms (accepted cut-offs defined high scores). Two hundred and one paramedics completed questionnaires concerning an index CI including downtime experience, acute distress, and current emotional symptoms. Nearly 75% received downtime; 59% found it helpful; 84% spent it with peers. Downtime was associated only with lower depression symptoms, not with other outcomes. The optimal period for downtime was between<30 minutes and end of shift, with>1 day being less effective. Planned testing of mediation of the association between downtime and depression by either calming acute post-CI distress or feeling helped by others was not performed because post-CI distress was not associated with downtime and perceived helpfulness was not associated with depression. These results suggest that outcomes of CIs follow different pathways and may require different interventions. A brief downtime is a relatively simple and effective strategy in preventing later depression symptoms.

Objectives This study was conducted to find out the effect of group counseling using the Metaverse platform on teacher's psychological burnout compared to face-to-face group counseling.
Methods With 43 teachers who teach Korean to foreign language learners at universities located in Seoul and Gyeonggi. The study aimed to measure their levels of psychological burnout and assess their willingness to participate in group counseling. Initially, a pre-test using a psychological burnout scale was administered to six group members who wished to participate in group counseling in a metaverse environment and six members who preferred face-to-face group counseling. The homogeneity of the two groups was examined. Following the implementation of a prevention program with the same content, the changes in psychological burnout for each group were examined using independent samples t-tests, and the differences in counseling methods between the two groups were statistically analyzed using both parametric and non-parametric tests.
Results Both the metaverse group and the face-to-face group showed statistically significant reductions in psychological burnout after the implementation of the program. The changes in burnout between the two groups did not exhibit statistically significant differences based on counseling methods.
Conclusions This results is considered significant for future group counseling scenarios in terms of expecting positive outcomes from counseling sessions utilizing the metaverse platform. The research obtained results confirming the effectiveness of group counseling using the metaverse platform and enhancing the trustworthiness of counseling in the metaverse. Additionally, through interviews with participants involved in the metaverse counseling, positive opinions regarding the new counseling approach were identified. Therefore, this study is considered meaningful in anticipating the counseling outcomes using the metaverse platform in group counseling settings.

When it comes to managing their workforce, one of the most difficult difficulties that organizations encounter is burnout among employees. This study sought to examine the level and factors contributing to burnout among employees in Johor state health department, Malaysia and to determine the association between burnout and sociodemographic. This was a cross-sectional study of 282 employees from Johor State health department. 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was developed to measure emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The questionnaire elicited information regarding socio-demographic and work characteristics. Descriptive analysis was undertaken and parametric test was conducted to establish the relationship of burnout and sociodemographic. The data indicated on the MBI, majority of the respondents have moderate degree of emotional exhaustion (55.8%), High degree of depersonalization (55.8%) and low degree of personal accomplishment (62.2%). One way- ANOVA demonstrates there is association in emotional exhaustion between type of profession, depersonalization between type of profession and service period, and personal accomplishment between service period. (p value <0.01). The findings show that research design and techniques are sufficient for the upcoming prospective analyses of aetiology and effects of burnout and of the influence of workplace intervention.

Abstract Background and Purpose: People spend a significant part of their lifespan working, but the role of age in job design and implementation of work have largely been ignored. The consequences can be evident in stress and burnout in different symptoms. Thus, age-diverse employees are faced with different symptoms of burnout and stress when carrying out their work. The main aim of this paper is to present burnout of older employees compared to younger employees in Slovenian companies. Design/Methodology/Approach: The paper is based on research including a survey between two age groups of employees, namely the younger employees that were classified in the group of under 50 years of age and the older employees that were classified in the group of above 50 years of age. Since the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro- Wilk test showed that the data was not normally distributed, the noan-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used to verify differences in the physical symptoms of burnout, emotional symptoms of burnout, and behavioral symptoms of burnout in the workplace between two groups. Results: The results show that there are significant differences in the great majority of the variables describing the physical symptoms of burnout, emotional symptoms of burnout, and behavioral symptoms of burnout in the workplace between younger and older employees. Conclusion: Well-being in the workplace of age-diverse employees is a key for long-term effectiveness of organizations. Managers and employers should apply appropriate measures to reduce burnout as well as to contribute to employees well-being and better workplace performance.

Objective As in other health sciences, a career in dentistry is associated with numerous stressors in practitioners. The main objective of this research was to examine the prevalence of emotional exhaustion, burnout, and perceived stress among dental students in Mexico. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 73 dental students attending a private university in Northern Mexico. Three scales were administered to students to identify emotional exhaustion, burnout, and perceived stress, and parametric data analysis was performed. Results Among participants (mean age 19.7 years), the proportion with emotional exhaustion, perceived high stress, and burnout was 52.0%, 42.3%, and 17.8%, respectively. All students with perceived stress also had burnout. Conclusions We found that emotional exhaustion and perceived stress are experienced by a large proportion of dentistry students enrolled in the third semester at this private university in Northern Mexico. The proportions were independent of age and sex.
