The book, that gathers reflections on the theme of the city, intended as field of experimentation, gives an updated panorama of the doctoral (PhD) and postdoctoral research in Architectural Technology, and offers ample theoretical insights as well as a large collection of specialized applications. The environmental approach, that welcomes suggestions from the surrounding areas, highlighting the "material culture", shows the common traits that are present in many of the research themes here exposed.

In the sphere of the vast panorama of international studies on the family in the pre-industrial age, the 11th Study Week promoted by the Fondazione Datini explored the economic role played by the members of this fundamental group in the survival and evolution of society. Developing over the course of five centuries, and examining the peculiarities proper to the different geographical areas of Europe, the studies collected in this book analyse economic strategies aimed at generating and perpetuating financial and property fortunes, or even simply at protecting and preserving the family group. They also address the articulated economic functions which the various components performed within the family, and the manner in which such strategies integrated and interacted in a complex context of different entities and social brackets. Within this framework, the book presents not just a series of new studies on the individual family groups, but above all is intended to underscore the important collective function of the family, which played a significant role in the growth, stasis or decline of the societies of pre-industrial Europe.

The research aims to analyse the concept of the 'holiday home' in Italy, a phenomenon that is not very well known and not given sufficient visibility in the tourism sector. The objective is to grasp the role and the degree of response that the holiday homes can offer in order to consolidate a genuinely social and sustainable tourism, which is the specific feature of the Associazione di Promozione Sociale Santa Lucia. The holiday homes represent an efficacious response to the emerging motivations for travel and a new sensitivity towards social and sustainable tourism. The growing opportunities for this sector call for reflection on the mission and future positioning of the holiday homes within the tourist reception panorama, with the deriving choices relating to: the offer, consisting of values more than of services; the functions fulfilled, intimately bound up with the demands of the individual and the territory; the quality of the service, which is not generic but linked to the functions and can be measured in line with objective and subjective parameters. Strategic awareness, managerial capacity and elevated professionalism at all levels are the factors of legitimisation and success of this original reception formula.

Using Cassiodorus’s Variae (537–40), this chapter deals with Rome and its controversial image through one very important aspect of Theoderic’s political activity, his building policy. While in the case of other Italian cities, especially Theoderic’s capital, Ravenna, Cassiodorus’s letters emphasized the efficiency of building activity in terms of obedience to the king’s orders, in Rome Theoderic’s building activity is used to show local resistance. This group dealt with the repression of frequently occurring abuses, such as the misappropriation by private citizens of public building structures and of their ornaments, as well as the appropriation by private individuals of the funds allocated by public authority for the restoration of buildings in the city. Furthermore, it is only in the case of Rome that we see these letters having direct counterparts in the authorizations given by the king to private individuals to build new private buildings on what had previously been public monumental sites, even including an order to Symmachus to restore Pompey’s theatre. The panorama in Rome was therefore much more controversial than in other Italian cities, and it allows us to grasp not only the efficacy of Theoderic’s control over building, but also the difficulties he faced and the strategies he employed to create consensus in a controversial context.

This chapter paints a panoramic and multifaceted picture of tunnel warfare across time and geography. It begins with World War I, which has marked history with powerful tunnel mining attacks, face-to-face underground combat, and the demonstration of how tunnel users improve their skills on the go. It proceeds to focus on underground combat through World War II, the Vietnam War, the wars in Afghanistan, the War in Syria, and cross-border tunnels in Egypt and Israel. It shows that underground warfare has evolved into a global phenomenon that is currently benefiting from strategic and technological tailwinds. Asymmetric conflicts, where the aerial and ground superiority of one party stands out, are particularly vulnerable to the spread of underground warfare.

Like most challenging tasks in life rehearsal helps us to improve our performance, and with the interview, rehearsal is essential. This chapter discusses rehearsal strategies for the interview, considering groups, courses, modelling, and feedback (both from the group and on video). The advantages and disadvantages of interview courses are discussed. The chapter explores the benefit of rehearsal groups, the importance of the correct composition of such groups to be a positive influence, and how to give constructive feedback without undermining confidence. The chapter continues with an explanation of the modelling process as a group rehearsal strategy and thinks about how to apply empathy in the rehearsal group in order to enhance communication during the interview. This chapter includes a useful exercise for an interview rehearsal group to work towards having a panoramic perspective of performance.

Universalism in the study of world politics, while influential, offers a “flat” view of political reality. Studies of single countries and areas provide an “in-depth” corrective, but by definition this will be partial, even parochial. Well-designed comparisons can combine overall balance, integration, depth of vision, and wider panoramic focus. But it is no soft option. This chapter reviews examples that illustrate this methodological standpoint and offers ten protocols that can improve the quality of such work. It suggests that relevant explanatory features should be “configurative” rather than overly reductionist. This requires a multidisciplinary approach, specialized training, and the application of judgment and expertise. But this needs to complement efforts to develop and test some portable findings. The pursuit of causal explanation must be balanced against an understanding of the resulting resemblances and contrasts. The validity of the findings will depend, in part, on the balanced quality of the comparative work.

‘All Hogglestock believed their parson to be innocent; but then all Hogglestock believed him to be mad.’ Josiah Crawley lives with his family in the parish of Hogglestock, East Barsetshire, where he is perpetual curate. Impoverished like his parishioners, Crawley is hard-working and respected but he is an unhappy, disappointed man, ill-suited to cope when calamity strikes. He is accused of stealing a cheque to pay off his debts; too proud to defend himself, he risks ruin and disgrace unless the truth can be brought to light. Crawley’s predicament divides the community into those who seek to help him despite himself, and those who, like Mrs Proudie, are convinced of his guilt. When the Archbishop’s son, Major Grantly, falls in love with Crawley’s daughter Grace, battle lines are drawn. The final volume in the Barsetshire series, The Last Chronicle draws to a close the stories of many beloved characters, including the old Warden, Mr Harding, Johnny Eames, and Lily Dale. Panoramic in scale, elegiac and moving, it is perhaps Trollope’s greatest novel.

This chapter examines the little magazines' shift to a poetry of modern life between 1910 and 1925 by discarding long-standing generic strictures of style and subject matter in favor of themes dealing with the industrialized metropolis. Soon after 1910, many poets such as T. S. Eliot, Claude McKay, and Carl Sandburg began to write verses about life in the modern city. This turn toward urban subject matter marked a decisive change in American poetry's relationship to modernity and an epochal departure from national traditions. This chapter considers the integral connection between verse and the visual arts as many American poets focused on investigating urban modernity as a subject. It also discusses the different ways that these poets learned to represent the machine-age metropolis after 1910 and challenged the aesthetic and ideological verities of class, ethnicity, and gender underlying their romantic-genteel inheritance; acts of observation in American cityscape verse that operate at both microscopic and panoramic levels; and poems of gutters, street pavements, and skylines that are complementary within an emerging poetics of urban materiality.

‘I think I could be a good woman if I had five thousand a year.’ Becky Sharp is sharp, calculating, and determined to succeed. Craving wealth and a position in society, she charms, hoodwinks, manipulates everyone she meets, rising in the world as she attaches herself to a succession of rich men. Becky’s fortunes are contrasted with those of her best friend Amelia, who has none of Becky’s wit and vitality but whose gentle-heartedness attracts the devotion of the loyal Dobbin. Set during the Napoleonic wars, Vanity Fair follows Becky as she cuts a swathe through Regency society. Thackeray paints a panoramic portrait of the age, with war, money and national identity his great subjects. The battle for social success is as fierce as the battle of Waterloo, and its casualties as stricken. The satire is at once biting and profound, sparing none in a clear-eyed exposure of a world on the make. Thackeray’s scepticism of human motives borders on cynicism yet Vanity Fair is among the funniest novels of the Victorian age. This new edition includes all Thackeray’s original illustrations.

Francesco Rosi’s work, which includes an impressive number of individually celebrated films, occupies a unique place in postwar Italian, indeed postwar world, cinema. Over the years, Rosi has offered films that trace an intricate path between the real and the fictive, the factual and the imagined. His films show an extraordinarily consistent formal balance while representing historical events as social emblems that examine, shape, and reflect the national self. They rely on a labyrinthine narrative structure, in which the sense of an enigma replaces the unidirectional path leading ineluctably to a designated end and solution. The truth itself, so fragmented and confused, may never be discovered. Rosi’s logical investigations are conducted by an omniscient eye and translated into a cinematic approach that embraces the details of material reality with the panoramic perspective of a dispassionate observer. This study addresses Rosi’s films as mosaics fashioned out of “clips” collected from the various stages of production, most specifically from the director’s own archival materials. It examines Rosi’s creative use of film as document (and as spectacle). This is, inevitably then, a study of the specific cinematic techniques that characterize Rosi’s work and that visually, compositionally, express his vision of history and the elusive “truth” of past and present social and political realities.

Jarenski’s chapter engages with the theme of erasure in Gates’s aesthetic and examines the ways that Gates imagined himself as Dave “the Slave” Potter, using Dave’s hyperbolic vessels as the staging area for his own artistic performance. Gates’s work with Dave resonates with the work of other artists, like Kara Walker (inspired by the panorama, the silhouette, and sentimental fiction) and Carrie Mae Weems, who has incorporated ethnographic daguerreotypes into her work. In order for us to fully appreciate the still undertheorized experimental breakthroughs of antebellum black artists, slave and free, this chapter claims that we must recognize the continued influence of nineteenth-century forms on contemporary African American art.

By using quasi-geostrophic modons constructed in Chapter 6 as initial conditions, rotating-shallow-water modons are obtained through the process of ageostrophic adjustment, both in one- and in two-layer configurations. Scatter plots show that they are solutions of the rotating shallow-water equations. A special class of modons with an internal front (shock) is shown to exist. A panorama of collision processes of the modons, leading to formation of tripoles, nonlinear modons, or elastic scattering is presented. The modon solutions are then used for initialisations of numerical simulations of decaying rotating shallow-water turbulence. The results are analysed and compared to those obtained with standard in 2D turbulence initializations, and differences are detected, showing non-universality of decaying 2D turbulence. The obtained energy spectra are steeper than theoretical predictions for ‘pure’ 2D turbulence, and pronounced cyclone–anticyclone asymmetry and dynamical separation of waves and vortices are observed.

The book reviews the theoretical foundations of macroeconomic, fiscal, and monetary policy. It offers a panoramic view of macroeconomic theory, covering a wide range of topics that are not customarily dealt with in macroeconomics texts, as well as more standard material. The style is intuitive and accessible, relying on basic calculus, but explained discursively and using diagrams. Advanced theory is bridged with more elementary/intermediate material. Established models are reviewed alongside current research. There is an extensive review of empirical evidence on virtually every topic, supplemented by narrative accounts for various episodes. The policy implications of the various theories are emphasized throughout. The chapters are largely self-contained so that different courses can focus at different places. A ‘Guidance for Further Study’ section and extensive bibliography give plenty of ideas for all levels of independent study, from UG Projects to M.Sc. dissertations to Ph.D. theses. The book should be seen as an affirmation that there is a well-developed body of theory that is invaluable for an in-depth understanding of the macroeconomy and policy; equally, there is much scope for critical discussion and debate. Thus, the key feature is a balance between: breadth as well as depth; analytical treatment and intuition; theory and evidence; vintage theories and current directions; theory and policy; (established) theory and debate. As such, the book should appeal to a variety of instructors and students of macroeconomics at advanced undergraduate or graduate level, as well as those in related fields such as political economy.

A journey through the history, cultures, and societies of Marseille. There are many Marseilles, or at least many versions of Marseille: seaside village, haven of gangsters, gateway to the East, city of immigrants and outcasts. It is by turns the dull bourgeois provincial town where nothing ever happens and the mysterious unknowable city of the Mediterranean. In Marseille Mix, William Firebrace explores the many Marseilles, the invented and the actual. Leading readers down narrow streets, through undulating terrain that seems at once, or serially, Italian, Greek, Levantine, and North African, Firebrace traces the history and culture of Marseille through landscapes, buildings, food, films, literature, and criminology. In seven chapters, in writing that is by turns essay, narrative, description, list, recipe, glossary, and conversation, Firebrace investigates the city's defining mix. He tells stories of famous Marseillais, including Marcel Pagnol and Antonin Artaud, and famous visitors, including the dying Arthur Rimbaud and Walter Benjamin (who wrote about one visit in “Hashish in Marseille”). He describes the brief period when Marseille was the point of departure for European refugees fleeing the Nazis and the city's mixture of desperation and decadence during the Vichy regime. He visits the basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde and gazes down from its terrace at the panoramic view: an agglomeration of neighborhoods and landscapes that became a city.

In the Cold War, “development” was a catchphrase that came to signify progress, modernity, and economic growth. Development aid was closely aligned with the security concerns of the great powers, for whom infrastructure and development projects were ideological tools for conquering hearts and minds around the globe, from Europe and Africa to Asia and Latin America. This book provides a global history of development, drawing on a wealth of archival evidence to offer a panoramic and multifaceted portrait of a Cold War phenomenon that transformed the modern world. Taking readers from the aftermath of the Second World War to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, the book shows how development projects altered local realities, transnational interactions, and even ideas about development itself. The book shines new light on the international organizations behind these projects—examining their strategies and priorities and assessing the actual results on the ground—and it also gives voice to the recipients of development aid. It shows how the Cold War shaped the global ambitions of development on both sides of the Iron Curtain, and how international organizations promoted an unrealistically harmonious vision of development that did not reflect local and international differences. The book presents a global perspective on Cold War development, demonstrating how its impacts are still being felt today.

Stephen’s musings on the pre-cinematic ‘stereoscope’ are discussed in relation to Bloom’s contemplation of parallax and his mention of the ‘Mutoscope’. The three-dimensionality, tangibility, and tactility of stereoscopic perception is analysed alongside Bloom’s and Gerty’s encounter in ‘Nausicaa’ and the Merleau-Pontian concepts of ‘flesh’ and ‘intercorporeity’. The bodily effects of projected cinema—achieved through virtual film worlds, virtual film bodies, and the intercorporeity of film and spectator—are discussed through reference to panorama, phantom ride, and crash films. The dizzying effects of some of these films are compared to the vertiginous nature of the ‘Wandering Rocks’ episode of Ulysses; these cinematic and literary vestibular disturbances are elucidated through gestalt theory and the phenomenological concepts of ‘intention’, ‘attention’, and the ‘phenomenal field’. Finally, the relationship between the self and the other is considered, through a discussion of cinematic mirroring in Ulysses and in Mitchell and Kenyon’s fin de siècle Living Dublin films.

The origin of larvae has been much discussed, but the most plausible theory is the “terminal addition theory,” which proposes that the larvae originated when a benthic stage was added to the ancestral holoplanktonic life cycle, with the planktonic stage retained as the larva. Marine larvae show an astonishing morphological and ecological variation. Planktotrophic larvae are found in many smaller or larger lineages, and characteristic types—such as the trochophore of many annelids and molluscs, the cyphonautes of some bryozoans, the actinotrocha of most phoronids, the pluteus larvae of most echinoderms, and the tornaria of some enteropneusts—are familiar members of the plankton. These larvae show different types of ciliary filter feeding: trochophores have downstream-collecting, cyphonautes and actinotrocha have ciliary-sieving, and pluteus and actiunotrocha have upstream-collecting feeding. Crustacean larvae show a variety of feeding mechanisms. Lecithotrophic larvae are found in all phyla. A panorama of marine larvae is presented.

The main theme of the panorama of 2020 was the COVID-19 pandemic, the analysis of its damage to the world economy, the study of the experience of countering it in various countries and regions (China, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America). On this background, the problems of the BRICS and the post-Soviet space are considered. Attention is paid to the situation in Syria, Libya and other hot spots. These and other topics are presented in both global and regional dimensions (Middle East, East and Southeast Asia, Latin America, etc.). There are sections on ecology and scientific life, as well as reviews of new books on the subject of the yearbook.

The book offers panoramic and at the same time systemic coverage of the Russian literary estate and summer house from the end of the XIX to the beginning of the XXI century. The publication combines the articles of 24 authors, distributed in three sections. The first two are devoted to the estate- dacha theme in Russian literature at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries and divided into prose, poetry and drama. The third is devoted to aspects of the image of the estate in the literature of the Soviet decades and in the modern era. Inside the sections, the material is placed according to the chronological principle, articles about the dacha are given at the end. The novelty of the publication is also determined by the motive-genre paradigm of the scientific analysis of the “estate” works by A.A. Blok, D.S. Merezh kovsky, L.N. Andreev et al.; by appealing not only to famous “estate” authors — A.P. Chekhov, I.A. Bunin, A.N. Tolstoy, but also to half-forgotten writers — O. Olnem, N.N. Rusov, S.N. Durylin; by the elucidation of the specifics of the “estate topos” in the literary directions of the XX — early XXI centuries: symbolism, neorealism, expressionism, socialist realism, metamodernism, etc.; by the study of the writer’s reception of varieties of the estate of the turn of the XIX–XX centuries, such as merchant, city, Siberian ones. The book is addressed not only to humanities scholars — philologists, culturologists, historians, but also to a wide range of interested readers — teachers, students, and amateurs.

This chapter addresses the various methods for measuring cancer burden and the complexities resulting from practical applications of these measurements. It also provides an overview of global cancer patterns and trends. Epidemiological observations indicate that cancer development and progression is due to an interaction of environmental exposures with genetic factors. This underscores the importance of using complementary epidemiological measurements to obtain a cohesive and comprehensive panorama of cancer burden. Manifold measurements that capture the number of deaths, incidence/mortality rates, and time trends with respect to variations between countries, regions, and risk factors must be considered. Efforts to quantify the impact of cancer are limited primarily by the fact that only a small proportion of the global population is covered by cancer registries. Collectively, neoplasms are the second largest cause of death worldwide and deaths from site-specific cancers ascended the causes of death list in both low- and high-income countries.

The steelband emerged in Trinidad in the 1940s as a musical expression of disadvantaged urban youths who made ingenious use of discarded metal containers to accompany carnival dancing and singing. Within a few short years, however, steelpans moved from the social margins to a privileged placed in Trinidad and Tobago’s national culture, and from road to stage. Today, the government of Trinidad and Tobago funds a professional National Steel Symphony Orchestra, and steelpans are also incorporated into Trinidad and Tobago’s National Sinfonia. In this chapter, I reflect on this transformation through the lens of ethnographic research, published scholarship, and my own experience playing in both steelbands and symphony orchestras. I examine some ways in which steelbands have adopted, and adapted, the model of the symphony orchestra, and consider the implications of these changes for community building, focusing especially on the repertoire and procedures of the annual Panorama steelband competition.

This book offers a modern genealogy of “near-death experiences,” outlining the important functions of these experiences in the religious field of Western modernity. Emerging as autobiographical narratives in the legacy of Christian deathbed visions, narratives of near-death experiences were used in Western religious metacultures (Christian, Esoteric, and Spiritualist–Occult) as substantial proof for the survival of death. In its historical part, the study demonstrates how certain features of near-death experiences, for example, the panoramic life review or autoscopic out-of-body-experiences, emerged in Occult and Esoteric circles in the 19th and 20th centuries, experimenting with astral projection, drugs, and “clairvoyant” states. It was only in the 1970s, however, that Raymond Moody, popularizing the generic term “near-death experience” that had been introduced by John C. Lilly, could declare the different features to be elements of a single phenomenon. Other factors that paved the way were discussions on “brain death,” coma, and the increase of hospitalized dying, the crisis of traditional religious institutions in the 1960s and early 1970s, and the claim of individual religious experiences. In its systematic part, the study discusses the religious relevance of these experiences for the experiencers themselves, but also for the growing audience of such testimonies. These functions encompass ontological, epistemic, intersubjective, and moral aspects. Most central is the reassurance that in modernity, religious experience is still possible, and that near-death experiences may initiate a new spiritual orientation in life. In addition, they are held to offer evidence for the transcultural validity of afterlife visions.

This book rescues twenty years of activities in the Sports Anthropology Working Group at the Brazilian Association of Anthropology. Its chapters present a panorama of research presented in this period as well as the several dialogues with other areas, which identify an interdisciplinary existence. A team of male and female researchers, from different backgrounds and areas of studies, decided to play together and produce scientific knowledge over the body and sports practices under the spectrum of anthropology, but also at the interface with other Human Sciences. It is in this context that this collection simultaneously proposes to celebrate such twenty years of participation in sports studies at the Brazilian Conferences of Anthropology, as well as pointing out paths for the next stages of building the Anthropology of Sports in Brazil and worldwide. Taking stock of the dialogues established between this field of investigation and the multiple disciplinary areas with which it has been built, this team of specialists turns a kaleidoscope of analytical possibilities on the object in question. If such studies systematize so far a consolidated trajectory, they also open up potentials for theoretical and ethnographic unfolding to future investigations.

In this review text, our objective is to present the reader with a sociocultural panorama, in which the theoretical intertwining of media and educational issues play the same scenario. Applying the method of bibliographic review in physical and digital collections, this study proposal is justified, as technological advances are generally lighter than scientific production can register their progress and setbacks, which, per se, It already suggests a continuous visitation to the postulates and state of the art of such a volatile theme. As a result of this investigation, we were able to detect that education, in its current interface with technological platforms, has been the target of many research works, which, on the one hand, reassures us, but on the other hand, worries us. Then two problem situations arose: if it calms us down, is it because many have been observing contemporary facts? And, if it provokes us, it would be due to the amazement that arises around such fertile themes as ours.

A well-known name in contemporary sociology, Dipankar Gupta’s wide range of scholarship and popular columns have justly earned him the reputation of being one of India’s leading public intellectuals. Talking Sociology provides a complete panorama of Gupta’s life and works and his contribution to Indian sociology. In this book of conversations, he shares insights into the key areas of Indian sociology, such as the problem of social stratification, citizenship and democracy, and the caste system and ethnic groups in India. In his view, once we understand the discrete nature of caste identity we begin to appreciate the energy behind caste mobilization and, indeed, of the obduracy of this institution itself. It also discusses the influence of prominent thinkers on Gupta’s works, such as Claude Lévi Strauss, Talcott Parsons, André Beteille, and John Rawls. The ninth in the series of Ramin Jahanbegloo’s conversations with the prominent intellectuals who have made a significant impact in shaping the modern Indian thought, this book discusses Gupta’s array of work and its redefinition and reconstruction of the central concepts of sociology, taking it beyond its disciplinary boundaries.

The Sublimity of Document: Cinema as Diorama (Avant-Doc 2) is an international collection of in-depth, substantive interviews with moving-image artists working “avant-doc,” that is, making films that explore the territory between documentary and experimental cinema. The Sublimity of Document follows on MacDonald’s earlier Avant-Doc: Intersections of Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema (Oxford, 2015), though the focus here is on filmmakers who are committed to document itself, willing to go anywhere on the planet (or within film archives or on the internet) to document what they believe we need to see—regardless of whatever political implications the film experiences they create may have for us. The book uses the early history of the museum habitat diorama of animal life, specifically the Akeley Hall of African Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History, as a way of rethinking both early and modern cinema of document—and especially those recent filmmakers and films devoted to providing a panorama of places and events that viewers might never have opportunities to experience in person. The twenty-seven interviews in The Sublimity of Document are organized panoramically within the volume.

In situations of displacement, disruption, and difference, humans adapt by actively creating, re-creating, and adjusting their identities using the material world. This book employs the discipline of historical archaeology to study this process as it occurs in new and challenging environments. The case studies furnish varied instances of people wresting control from others who wish to define them and of adaptive transformation by people who find themselves in new and strange worlds. The authors consider multiple aspects of identity, such as race, class, gender, and ethnicity, and look for ways to understand its fluid and intersecting nature. The book seeks to make the study of the past relevant to our globalized, postcolonized, and capitalized world. Questions of identity formation are critical in understanding the world today, in which boundaries are simultaneously breaking down and being built up, and humans are constantly adapting to the ever-changing milieu. This book tackles these questions not only in multiple dimensions of earthly space but also in a panorama of historical time. Moving from the ancient past to the unknowable future and through numerous temporal stops in between, the reader travels from New York to the Great Lakes, Britain to North Africa, and the North Atlantic to the West Indies.

The EU’s vulnerability to crises is not a novelty, but disintegrative trends have reached a new quality. The financial and fiscal crisis shook the Union, which had just been consolidated by the Lisbon Treaty, to its foundations. The refugee crisis becomes a heavy test of European solidarity. For the first time, a member state, the United Kingdom, wants to leave the Union and in doing so, as at least the Brexiteers argue, regain its sovereignty. Even the member states themselves are not spared from moments of disintegration. One might think of the secessionist movements in Catalonia or Scotland etc. Against this background, the SIPE Congress in Hamburg has brought together high-ranking experts from all over Europe in order to explore the tension between integration and disintegration, as well as Europe’s prospects of being “united in diversity”. The discussions paint a differentiated overall panorama of the constantly challenged integration project. James Joyce and the Phenomenology of Film reappraises the lines of influence said to exist between Joyce’s writing and early cinema and provides an alternative to previous psychoanalytic readings of Joyce and film. Through a compelling combination of historical research and critical analysis, Cleo Hanaway-Oakley demonstrates that Joyce, early film-makers, and phenomenologists (Maurice Merleau-Ponty, in particular) share a common enterprise: all are concerned with showing, rather than explaining, the ‘inherence of the self in the world’. Instead of portraying an objective, neutral world, bereft of human input, Joyce, the film-makers, and the phenomenologists present embodied, conscious engagement with the environment and others: they are interested in the world-as-it-is-lived and transcend the seemingly rigid binaries of seer/seen, subject/object, absorptive/theatrical, and personal/impersonal. This book re-evaluates the history of body- and spectator-focused film theories, placing Merleau-Ponty at the centre of the discussion, and considers the ways in which Joyce may have encountered such theories. In a wealth of close analyses, Joyce’s fiction is read alongside the work of early film-makers such as Charlie Chaplin, Georges Méliès, and Mitchell and Kenyon, and in relation to the philosophical dimensions of early cinematic devices such as the Mutoscope, the stereoscope, and the panorama. By putting Joyce’s literary work—Ulysses above all—into dialogue with both early cinema and phenomenology, this book elucidates and enlivens literature, film, and philosophy.

The author of this book asks us to prepare for the inevitable. Our society is going to die. What are you going to do about it? But the author also wants us to know that there's still reason for hope. In an immersive and mesmerizing discussion, this book considers what makes societies (throughout history) collapse. It points us to the historical examples of the Byzantine empire, the collapse of Somalia, the rise of Middle Eastern terrorism, the rise of drug cartels in Latin America, and the French Revolution, to explain how societal decline has common features and themes. While unveiling the past, the message to us about the present is searing. Through an assessment of past and current societies, the book offers us a new way of looking at societal growth and decline. With a broad panorama of bloody stories, unexpected historical riches, crime waves, corruption, and disasters, the reader is shown that although our society will, inevitably, die at some point, there's still a lot we can do to make it better and live a little longer. This inventive approach to an “end-of-the-world” scenario should be a warning. We're not there yet. The book concludes with a strategy of preserving and rebuilding so that we don't have to give a eulogy anytime soon.

Romantic Capabilities argues that popular new media uses of literary texts often activate and make visible ways the texts were already about their relationship to medium. Devising and modelling a methodology that bridges historicist literary criticism and reception studies with media studies and formalism, it contends that how a literary text behaves when it encounters new media reveals capabilities in media that can transform how we understand the text’s significance for the original historical context in which it was created. Following an introductory chapter that explains and justifies its approach to the archive, the book analyses significant popular “media behaviors” exhibited by three major Romantic British literary corpuses: the viral circulation of William Blake’s pictures and proverbs across contemporary media, the gravitation of Victorian panorama painters and stereoscopic photographers to Walter Scott’s historical fictions, and the ongoing popular practice of writing fanfiction set in the worlds of Jane Austen’s novels and their imaginary country estates. Blake emerges from the study as an important theorist of how viral media can be used to undermine law, someone whose art deregulates through the medium of its audiences’ heterogeneous tastes and conflicting demands for wisdom. Scott’s novels are shown to have fostered a new experience of vision and understanding of frame that helped launch modern immersive media. Finally, Austenian realism is revealed as a mode of ecological design whose project fanfiction grasps and extends.

The pandemic has highlighted longstanding shortcomings and challenges facing Latin America. We must make the most of this moment to bring about the historic transformations necessary to build a democratic governance that will bring peace, prosperity and social justice. The region requires structural change and this is, of course, nothing new. But now may be the most propitious moment in decades due to the electoral super-cycle that Latin America is experiencing from late 2020 until 2024, a period in which all presidential positions in the region are up for renewal, together with numerous legislative and subnational authorities. It is a unique opportunity that the region cannot afford to miss. This report was prepared by Jorge Máttar at the request of International IDEA under the direction of Daniel Zovatto. It is based on the minutes of seminars from The State of Democracy in Latin America project, implemented in 2020 by the Fundação Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the Fundación Democracia y Desarrollo, and International IDEA, and on the sessions of the International Forum of Santo Domingo on the Socioeconomic and Political Panorama for Latin America, held jointly with Funglode in January 2021. It also includes reflections, analysis and proposals produced together with Sergio Bitar (Bitar and Zovatto 2021), as well as those of Fernando Reyes Matta, Sergio Fausto and José Octavio Bordón. Other papers and empirical evidence have provided essential background for the preparation of this report.

"Space" currently gets high attention in the humanities and cultural studies. It is perceived as a "semiosphere" of inscription - also and especially in relation to religious meanings. The contributions in this book are dedicated to spatial constellations of religious semioses from a theological and philosophical perspective, but also from an interdisciplinary point of view. The articles are reflecting space in multiple ways by combining exegetical, systematic, and practical disciplines of Christian and Jewish theology with archaeology, philosophy, and sociology. This offers a representative insight into the very different ways in which theologies as well as humanities and cultural studies explore religiously coded landscapes.

Transcending Dystopia features pioneering research on the role music played in its various connections to and contexts of Jewish communal life and cultural activity in Germany from 1945 to 1989. As the first history of the Jewish communities’ musical practices during the postwar and Cold War eras, it tells the story of how the traumatic experience of the Holocaust led to transitions and transformations, and the significance of music in these processes. As such, it relies on music to draw together three areas of inquiry: the Jewish community, the postwar Germanys and their politics after the Holocaust (occupied Germany, the Federal Republic, the Democratic Republic, and divided Berlin), and the concept of cultural mobility. Indeed, the musical practices of the Jewish communities in the postwar Germanys cannot be divorced from politics, as can be observed in their relations to Israel and United States. On the grounds of these conceptual concerns, selective communities serve as case studies to provide a kaleidoscopic panorama of musical practices in worship and in social life. Within these pillars, the chapters in this volume cover a wide spectrum of topics, from music during commemorations, on the radio and in Jewish newspapers, to synagogue concerts and community events; from the absence and presence of cantor and organ to the resurgence of choral music. What binds these topics tightly together is the specific theoretical inquiry of mobility. Interdisciplinary in scope and method, the book builds on recent scholarship in Cold War studies, cultural history, German studies, Holocaust studies, and Jewish studies.

In 1969 Somalia, a country located in the Horn of Africa, suffered a military coup led by Siad Barre, a general who had integrated the colonial police of Somaliland and Italian Somalia. In this book we analyzed nine posters of governmental propaganda that comprise the period between 1974 -1975. The objective of this work is to discuss the construction of nationalism in the Barre Era, seeking similarities and discontinuities in relation to civil government. We use a vast historiography drawing to the maximum of local authors and theorists of the African continent. Through interdisciplinarity we aim to build a rich theoretical debate integrating anthropology, political science and history. The research used the theoretical model of historiographical analysis of Carlo Guinzburg, based on the investigation of clues in imagery sources. Elements of the local context, such as the process of decolonization of the Horn of Africa and conflicts with Ethiopia, have been emphasized, linking them to the global conjuncture of ideological conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union in the so-called Cold War. The impacts of colonialism are one of the central themes of the dissertation, so we try to demonstrate that events that occurred during colonization were fundamental to the complex puzzle that became the African continent during the 1960s and 1970s. Somalia does not escape this political panorama and the research tries to demonstrate that the posters analyzed were produced by the military government with the intention of disseminating a certain model of political regime.
