This piece focuses on the work of Juhani Pallasmaa who introduces phenomenological aspects of kinesthetic and multisensory perception of the human body into architecture theory. He argues that hand-drawing is a vital spatial and haptic exercise in facilitating architectural design. Through this process, architecture can emerge as the very ‘material’ existence of human embodied ‘immaterial’ emotion, feelings and wisdom. Hence, for Pallasmaa, architecture can be seen as an artistic practice, which entails multisensory and embodied thought in order to establish the sense of being in the world.

"Our starting point is a phenomenological analysis of the concepts of hand and possibility in relation to human realization and expression, whereby the problem of hand and its movements can be followed in this framework in its peculiarity and uniqueness. With regard to possibility, we follow a certain shift in Husserl’s concept of possibility towards practical possibility, as well as some selected passages in his texts concerning corporeality and constitution. This phenomenological starting point is connected to the question of stimulation (potentiating) of the hand in the creative process; we draw upon insights in texts of a Finnish thinker and architect Juhani Pallasmaa and on examples from fields of art, technology and handicrafts. Abstract This article is grown from a dialogue between Mr. Rudi’s childhood story as the sixth generation of Kidang Mas and the phenomenological perspective of Juhani Pallasmaa. Phenomenology by Pallasmaa is a powerful research strategy that is well suited for exploring the image within the Peranakan house of Kidang Mas. The strategy is expected to build a better understanding of the value of the Peranakan house. Pallasmaa’s perspective also proposes the “hands” to grasp the experiences through verbal sources turning into a concrete image. Verbal sources obtained from flowing and in-depth interviews supported by sensory activation, which engendered various fascinating and memorable childhood stories and activated all human senses. While the concrete images are conveyed through pictures based on the three most favorite childhood memory activities. The drawings were done using a pencil on paper. It is expected to elevate the sense of attachment of homeowners, local people, and visitors to the place which caused appreciation to the embodiment of Peranakan houses in Lasem as heritage buildings. This article gives another understanding of “rebuilding” sustainable place through the embodied image of Peranakan house in Lasem. The article also serves as a medium for disseminating knowledge about one of the Indonesian cultures to the wider audience.

Tendo em vista a recorrente priorização da dimensão visual, em detrimento de outros fatores que também conformam a experiência na arquitetura, o objetivo deste artigo é investigar estratégias sensoriais de projeto na perspectiva do arquiteto Juhani Pallasmaa, importante autor sobre a fenomenologia da arquitetura. Trata-se de uma abordagem realizada na disciplina “Projeto: investigações teórico-práticas”, no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. O trabalho apresenta um estudo na praia do Pontal, em Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. Adota-se uma abordagem fenomenológica fundamentada na investigação de características sensoriais do lugar como base para uma intervenção paisagística representada pelo projeto arquitetônico de uma passarela de conexão entre áreas da praia do Pontal. A proposta elaborada evidencia características sensoriais do lugar que se fundem com o processo de projeto em arquitetura, por meio de elementos que se relacionam: qualidades materiais e táteis, referências de luz e sombra, aspectos visuais, particularidades sonoras, dinâmicas antrópicas e relações espaço-tempo. O estudo demonstra que a perspectiva de Juhani Pallasmaa pode contribuir na formação de estudantes, profissionais e pesquisadores, mediante a imersão do arquiteto no lugar, cooperando no desenvolvimento de estratégias projetuais para a definição das experiências que a arquitetura propiciará na relação entre pessoa e ambiente.

Na teoria arquitetónica, a fenomenologia entende-se como um movimento que investiga a arquitetura enquanto experiência humana. Dentro desse movimento, este artigo destaca dois discursos: o de Christian Norberg-Schulz e de Juhani Pallasmaa por apresentarem, respetivamente, uma “fenomenologia do exterior” e uma “fenomenologia do interior”– domínios pertencentes e interdependentes da arquitetura. Estes arquitetos-fenomenólogos problematizaram sobre arquitetura-lugar e arquitetura-corpo para marcar as suas posições críticas ao movimento moderno e pós-moderno. O objetivo deste artigo é compreender e confrontar esses discursos por representarem uma sequencialidade de pensamentos que (conclui-se) “abrem a porta” a uma (nova) fenomenologia contemporânea na arquitetura. O desenvolvimento do tema passa pela abordagem das problemáticas da arquitetura enquanto imageme arquitetura de presença corporal; esta última essencial para a fenomenologia contemporânea. Metodologicamente, apresenta-se esse seguimento lógico seguido de uma contraposição das ideias abordadas. Conclui-se, destacando os pensamentos de Norberg-Schulz e Pallasmaa que desenvolvem a análise da noção do corpo na fenomenologia de arquitetura. Esta ampliação encaminha e introduz a fenomenologia contemporânea (fenomenologia de atmosfera como qualidade arquitetónica), aplicação efetiva na prática atual para arquitetos proeminentes como Daniel Libeskind, Steven Holl e Peter Zumthor.

En cinco ensayos (escritos en un lapso de veintiún años) se recopila el pensamiento sobre el habitar que el arquitecto finlandés plantea desde diversas perspectivas (tanto la fenomenológica y la estética), como desde diferentes puntos de vista (lo particular del cuerpo y la casa, o la colectividad que es la ciudad). La pregunta central, en esta serie, es el habitar traducido como la capacidad de brindar refugio, es decir, de ser un hogar para los diferentes niveles de realidad que el hombre construye. O mundo construído, o mundo da arquitetura, nas palavras de John Dewey, é “supremamente expressivo dos interesses e valores humanos”, influenciando o futuro, mas também recordando e transmitindo o passado. Ele “recorda e celebra mais que qualquer outra arte as características genéricas da nossa vida humana comum”. Prédios, ele escreve, entre todos os objetos de arte, são os que mais se aproximam ao “expressar a estabilidade e persistência da existência. Eles são para as montanhas o que a música é para o mar”. Eu traço alguns novos vínculos entre uma estética pragmatista experiencial e o rico trabalho do arquiteto finlandês praticante e filosoficamente sofisticado, Juhani Pallasmaa. Em seu Os Olhos da Pele, Pallasmaa retoma o tema da “arquitetura e os sentidos” e desenvolve no caso da arquitetura uma afirmação deweyiana central: o mundo construído deve ser medido por quão bem fora construído de forma a nos ativar em todos estes níveis de nosso ser corpóreo. Pallasmaa proporciona um “ângulo” de arquiteto com a ajuda de diferentes, embora complementárias ferramentas filosóficas. Em A Mão Pensante, ele foca na fertilidade heurística e valor exemplificador do processo “manual” ou “guiado a mão” envolvidos no design do mundo construído em oposição ao uso privilegiado do computador. Using as a starting point the artwork from a group of contemporary artists whose language is grounded on handicraft techniques, this article puts forward several reflections on the art production process and its impact on the act of seeing—in particular, creative processes which, by dissolving the watertight categories of arts, handicrafts, and design, focus on the sensory qualities of materials, rein in rational control on the act of making, and result in artwork which can only be understood beyond discourse. Drawing from ideas that are central to the writings of Juhani Pallasmaa, Richard Sennett, Byung-Chul Han, and Doris von Drathen, this article discusses various theoretical questions underlying the work of the aforementioned artists. They all point towards the possibility of an artistic practice that represents an ethics rooted in detachment and silence.

The notion of "familiar" has recently become crucial in the debate generated by Everyday Aesthetics. In this essay, I will explore this concept in the theories of Arto Haapala and Yuriko Saito, then I will examine the notion of familiar - and some antonym notions (i.e. strange, uncanny, alien) - while embracing a phenomenological approach. Referring to German phenomenologist Gernot Böhme's theory of atmospheres, my paper compares the notion of a glass house, theorised by Modernism, and the notion of a shell house, seen from different perspectives by Walter Benjamin, Gaston Bachelard and Juhani Pallasmaa. I will finally draw a parallel with the notion of strange possibly degenerating into the idea of uncanny or alien, for instance when the transparency of glass is used as a tool for control or when it is embodied in the digital screens of hypertechnological homes.

The absolute consideration of the acoustic environment within architectural design praxis has traditionally been reserved only for those specialised listening facilities such as concert halls or recording studios. This is in spite of numerous recent calls from architects and theorists such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Ted Sheriden, Karen Van Lengen, and Björn Hellström that architectural praxis must seek to move beyond what Jeremy Till describes as the vanity of form, and what Rafael Pizarro acknowledges as the seductive immediacy of pure visual articulations of space. That architectural design has traditionally been in a more than willing position to seek out myriad influences, theories, and extra-architectural knowledge has even led Jean-Claude Guédon and Botond Bognar to argue that architecture has ceased to occupy a finite domain – its boundaries have dissipated as the definition of what architecture is continues to evolve and expand.

O artigo apresenta e analisa a casa Edyr Lima, passa pela investigação da casa Benedito Levi e culmina com a reflexão comparativa entre exemplar e precedente. O trabalho relaciona a definição de habitar de Juhani Pallasmaa verificando como a estética do frio se manifesta na casa Edyr. O texto pretende colaborar para a divulgação da arquitetura moderna ao sul do sul, alimentar criticamente a trajetória da arquitetura local, além de permitir um olhar para esta arquitetura junto da produção de mais alta qualidade no país produzida por Artigas. O estudo é resultado de pesquisa desenvolvida pelo Laboratório de Investigação Projetual (L.I.P) da UFSM/CS. A metodologia dialoga com autores como Gastón e Rovira (2007) e Melo (2019) resultando em uma proposta que não é apenas descritiva, mas também crítica. Na casa Edyr, a modernidade está associada a um repertório de elementos de composição que agrega e preserva hábitos da região sul.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a different perspective on the existence of the Peranakan houses’ gates that interpreted through the author’s experiences during the fieldwork. The gate embodiment gives a different atmosphere and experience which is not found elsewhere because they are unique and irreplaceable. Unfortunately, preserving these gates become a serious challenge in the modern era. The finding comes from the phenomenon which found after the field research and analyzed using the phenomenology approach of Merleau Ponty, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Steven Holl. Phenomenology allows people to express their existence through architecture and let its value appear to people as they experience it. The result showed that experiences would give the people have an attachment to the place unconsciously.

Critical posthumanism is an invitation to think differently about knowledge and educational relationality between humans and the more-than-human. This philosophical and political shift in subjectivity builds on, and is entangled with, poststructuralism and phenomenology. In this paper we read diffractively through one another the theories of Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa and feminist posthumanists Karen Barad and Rosi Braidotti. We explore the implications of the so-called ‘ontological turn’ for early childhood education. With its emphasis on a moving away from the dominant role of human vision (knowing and seeing) in educational research we show how videoing and photographing works as an apparatus in an analysis of data from an inner-city school in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are struck by children’s seeing with the ‘eyes of their skin’ (Pallasmaa) and ‘seeing’ with/in the world (posthumanism), as their obvious distress is felt when a small tree sapling has been mowed down in a nearby park. We analyse the event with the help of a variation on Deleuze’s notion of ‘becoming-child’: ‘becoming-little’, and Anna Tsing’s ‘the arts of noticing’. ‘Becoming-little’ as a methodology disrupts the adult/child binary that positions ‘little’, younger humans as inferior to their ‘bigger’ fully human counterparts. We exemplify ‘becoming-little’ through 4 and 5 year-olds’ learning with the little tree and adopt Barad’s temporal diffraction to ‘see’ what is in/visible in the park: the extractive, exploitative, colonising mining practices of White settlers. These are still part of the land on which the park was created but are in/visible beneath the ‘skin’ of the earth.

Contemporary historical preservation practice includes olfactory preservation as an experimental method of architectural preservation. The implementation of manufactured scents in historic buildings raises important issues of authenticity. This paper focuses on three important issues in the relation between olfactory preservation and authenticity: the importance of phenomenology in memory evocation; the relative character of the authenticity concept; and the significance of social values in historic preservation. This requires a critical examination of charters, documents and theoretical interpretations which reflect a broader concept of authenticity. The paper discusses certain articles of the Venice Charter, the Nara Document on Authenticity, as well as the sense of smell in architectural experience through critical analysis of the theories of John Ruskin, Viollet-le-Duc, Roger Scruton and Juhani Pallasmaa and their concepts of authenticity. Authenticity issues are illustrated by the examples of olfactory preservation: olfactory reconstruction of Philip Johnson?s Glass House; interior restoration and olfactory reconstruction of the Arts Club in Mayfair, London; and the creation process of the perfume brand Arquiste, a meaningful example which relocates the olfactory reconstruction context. These critical analyses raise the question of scent in historic buildings as a value in itself.

A arquitetura fenomenológica não possui talvez a solidez e a homogeneidade de uma escola ou de um movimento em sentido estrito, mas representa, no entanto, um vetor notável do pensamento arquitetônico contemporâneo. Juntamente com as obras de Heidegger, as obras de Merleau-Ponty são utilizadas com frequência por aqueles que se reconhecem como representantes de uma arquitetura de inspiração fenomenológica. Neste artigo será analisado o papel que o pensamento de Merleau-Ponty desenrola nas obras e no pensamento de Juhani Pallasmaa e Steven Holl, autores que se destacam pela força de seus trabalhos e pela determinação de suas posições teóricas. Particular atenção se prestará à dupla oposição que caracteriza a arquitetura fenomenológica, que se distancia com igual firmeza tanto do modernismo como do pós-modernismo. Estes autores, na reivindicação da primazia do corpo vivido e da experiência perceptiva, consideram ter encontrado um “antídoto” à ossificação produzida pela racionalidade moderna, com seus espaços funcionais e inabitáveis, como também à celebração da autorreferencialidade de um certo pós-modernismo, com seus edifícios destinados essencialmente a serem contemplados pelos apreciadores. A partir dessa dupla oposição, a arquitetura fenomenológica parece procurar um plano mais sólido numa forte acentuação da positividade da experiência corpórea e perceptiva, quando Merleau-Ponty parece empenhado, pelo contrário, em uma progressiva revisão destes aspetos.

Selecionado para ser parte da diplomacia brasileira, João Cabral de Melo Neto recebeu como primeiro posto de trabalho no exterior a cidade de Barcelona. Desde então, o vínculo entre o poeta e o espaço espanhol tornou-se cada vez mais intenso, seja na perspectiva biográfica, seja na refração dessa experiência na produção literária do autor. Dentro do país ibérico, entretanto, foi Sevilha que ganhou destaque nos versos do poeta. O encantamento provocado pela cidade andaluza chegou ao ápice nos últimos volumes de poesia publicados: Crime na Calle Relator e Andando Sevilha, sendo este segmentado em duas partes (“Andando Sevilha” e “Sevilha andando”). Tendo como recorte a ideia de habitar proposta por Juhani Pallasmaa, inicia-se esta análise com o estudo do par de poemas “Bifurcados de ‘Habitar o tempo’” e “Habitar o tempo”. Posteriormente, ao focalizar as representações da Espanha na obra cabralina, realiza-se a análise do poema “Corral de vecinos”, destacando o manejo das temporalidades e a figurativização de personagens típicas da cultura espanhola como componentes estruturantes do texto. Com esta leitura, foi possível compreender o poema sevilhano como a contraparte de uma encruzilhada entre Pernambuco e Espanha, constituindo a segunda bifurcação de “Habitar o tempo”, desta vez, do outro lado do Atlântico.

This paper examines the contemporary conceptual, perceptive and aesthetic potential of architecture to transform into landscape by means of materialization. Contrary to the former, modernistic principles of transparency, which eliminated the wall between the internal and external space on a literal, visual level, contemporary social and visual context create the prerequisites for establishing a new, ambivalent treatment of (de)materialization of the border between architecture and the landscape. Such transformation was interpreted in the paper as a consequence of the general change related to determination of architectural form, as well as change in the sphere of theory of perception. The ambivalent relation on the line subject-architecture-landscape relies in the paper on the phenomenology of perception of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Juhani Pallasmaa, whereas the architectural actualization of the given concept was analysed on the example of two different authors? views - Kengo Kuma and Jean Nouvel. The emphasis on architectural experience, rather than on the architectural image, places the material in the domain of the main framework of this concept, whether based on its tactile (Kuma) or imaginary value (Nouvel). Finally, in order to make architectural materiality a part of the natural environment, both design methods paradoxically shift the materials from their natural context (truth to materials), whereby, consequently, except for materiality, the perceptive experience of the place itself is relativized.

Along with the times, humans gradually growing too. This different time which is the main holder of changes in human nature that unconsciously causing many things, like in social terms. Technology, economy, knowledge, safety, social level, and place become a factor that affect human’s social changes. These social changes can refer to individualistic and do not care about the surrounding environment, so empathy seems to never be heard agin in this era, especially in urban. Empathy includes the ability to feel the emotional statre of others, feel sympathetic and try to slove problems, and take other people’s perspective (Baron & Byrne, 2004),. While the fact from recent studies have shown that empathy in a person is becoming increasingly rare, as many as 65 percent of people do not care or lose empathy (Daily Mail, 2019). Though empathy itself is important according to Graaff et al (2014) where empathy which underlines the importance of ability, behavior and a very important role in the development of moral and prosocial. The reduced level of empathy in urban is a major factor for designers to design a Pegadungan Empathy Development a place that can maintain and develop empathy through the phemomenology approach using human senses, as a training to feel the emotions of others through architectural space, one of them by labyrinth. The method project from Juhani Pallasmaa theories “An Architecture of Seven Sense” and “The Eyes of The Skin: Architecture and Sense” and through data collection from DKI Jakarta BPS, scientific journals, e-books, survey, interview and questionnaires, and local society needs analysis. Empati termasuk kemampuan untuk merasakan keadaan emosional orang lain, merasa simpatik dan mencoba menyelesaikan masalah, dan mengambil perspektif orang lain (Baron & Byrne, 2004). Faktanya, studi terbaru menunjukan rasa empati dalam diri seseorang semakin langka, sebanyak 65% orang bersikap tidak peduli atau kehilangan empati (Daily mail, 2019). Padahal empati merupakan hal penting menurut Graaff dkk, (2014), empatilah yang menggaris bawahi pentingnya kemampuan, tingkah laku dan sebuah peran yang sangat penting dalam pengembangan moral dan perilaku prososial. Menurutnya tingkat empati masyarakat di kota besar menjadi faktor utama bagi perancang untuk merancang sebuah Wadah Pengembangan Empati Pegadungan yang dapat menjaga maupun mengembangkan rasa empati tersebut melalui pendekatan fenomenologi indera manusia, sebagai wadah pelatihan untuk merasakan emosi sesama melalui ruang arsitektur, salah satunya pada labirin. Esse artigo tem como foco central a análise das rasgaduras e aparições, e do paradoxo entre o modo de presença das coisas em relação à percepção que delas podemos ter. Isto é, o modo da presença ausente que revela ser o processo perceptivo marcado pela ambiguidade. Para tanto, me debruço sobre a apropriação dos espaços arquitetônicos pelo sujeito na construção de um lugar singular, tomando como estudo de caso o projeto do escritório japonês SANAA para o Campus Vitra (2006) em Weil am Rhein na Alemanha, por sua configuração única. Com vistas a dar conta dessa narrativa, visitei o Campus Vitra, com o intuito de experimentar, vivenciar e comprovar se a prática projetual e construtiva de Kazuyo Sejima e Ryue Nishizawa, opera de fato em sentido contrário ao mainstream, e, como sua arquitetura pode ou não transformar a relação e a percepção do fruidor com o entorno. Como fortuna crítica remeto às reflexões do arquiteto finlandês Juhani Pallasmaa (1936), relacionada a apreensão psíquica da arquitetura obtida a partir do conceito de atmosfera – como um espaço sintonizado composto por um conjunto de elementos indefinidos e espacialmente distribuídos – e ao conceito da fenomenologia focada na atmosfera sob o ponto de vista do filósofo alemão Gernot Böhme. Para o filósofo, a atmosfera não se refere a características espirituais, mas a uma atitude reflexiva e crítica relacionada à consciência da corporeidade e da percepção do indivíduo.

Longe de ser um campo fechado em si mesmo, a Arquitetura sempre procurou estabelecer pontes com outros campos disciplinares – notadamente, com a Filosofia. Entre as correntes de pensamento que fomentaram e que continuam a instigar o pensamento arquitetônico está a fenomenologia. Tal corrente filosófica, fundada por Edmund Husserl no início do século XX, teve um papel fundamental nas discussões sobre a experiência, a relação corpo-espaço em projetos de Arquitetura, contribuindo para a formação e o desenvolvimento do pensamento arquitetônico Pós-Moderno – uma questão ainda pouco estudada e fonte de debates. A fenomenologia representa uma alternativa crítica ao pensamento positivista, que, no campo arquitetônico, identifica-se, sobretudo, com o Movimento Moderno. É possível observar a influência da fenomenologia tanto nas questões de Teoria e História da Arquitetura, quanto nas discussões projetuais – em ambos, o problema do “empobrecimento” da experiência comparece de diversos modos. O presente artigo procura estabelecer diálogos entre o pensamento de três arquitetos e autores que têm a fenomenologia como base de suas discussões: o espanhol Jorge Otero-Pailos (1971-), o norueguês Christian Norberg-Schulz (1926-2000) e o finlandês Juhani Pallasmaa (1936-). Com a escolha destes autores, nota-se a persistência das discussões sobre a fenomenologia no interior do campo arquitetônico ao longo das décadas de 1970, 1990 e 2010, especialmente, nos contextos estadunidense e europeu. Além disso, observa-se que a fenomenologia arquitetônica não é um pensamento unívoco: ocorreram desenvolvimentos e modificações ao longo dos mais de 50 anos de discussões no meio acadêmico e no campo da prática profissional.

Globalization has brought many significant changes and impacts to the world, both positive and negative. On the one hand, globalization has brought technological advances and information that enable access to faster and easier information and communication, as well as increasing international trade and foreign investments that can drive economic growth. On the other hand, globalization is also potentially exacerbating the social and economic disparity between strong and weak countries, as well as strengthening the influence of multinational forces and global organizations to make decisions that can affect human life. And free association is one of the effects of globalization itself. Promiscuity is a social phenomenon with such a variety of forms as murder, alcoholic beverages, smoking, brawling, and sexual promiscuity. Casual sex is one form of free association and the effects of casual sex: premature marriage, abortion, and HIV. HIV is a very lethal impact. The spread of HIV is free of the three factors: female entertainers, drug use, and poor dipper. Female entertainers are a form of sexual promiscuity. On the other hand, a lack of empathy for society leads to mental, psychological and biological problems for prostitutes. In this regard, empathy for female entertainers also plays a key role in promoting more inclusive and friendly social changes for individuals involved in tuna. In building empathy for female comforters, society needs to treat them with respect, tolerance, and understanding. Thus, it is hoped that a more inclusive and friendly social environment will be created for all individuals in society, through architecture. The project employs methods of juhani pallasmaa's theory "an architecture of seven sense" and "the eyes of the skin: architecture and sense" and through data collecting from BPS's internal media, e.book, surveys, interviews and semisters, and analysis of the needs of the surrounding communities. It is to be expected that empathy remains and remains until recently, with a design consistent with the characteristics of empathy. Di satu sisi, globalisasi telah membawa kemajuan teknologi dan informasi yang memungkinkan akses informasi dan komunikasi yang lebih cepat dan mudah, serta meningkatkan perdagangan internasional dan investasi asing yang dapat mendorong pertumbuhan ekonomi. Di sisi lain, globalisasi juga berpotensi memperburuk kesenjangan sosial dan ekonomi antara negara-negara yang kuat dan lemah, serta memperkuat pengaruh kekuatan multinasional dan organisasi global dalam mengambil keputusan yang dapat mempengaruhi kehidupan manusia. Dan pergaulan bebas salah satu dampak dari globalisasi itu sendiri. Pergaulan bebas adalah fenomena sosial memiliki beragam bentuk seperti : pembunuhan, minuman berakohol, merokok, tawuran, dan sex bebas. Sex bebas salah satu bentuk pergaulan bebas dan dampak dari sex bebas adalah: pernikahan dini, aborsi, dan hiv. Hiv adalah dampak yang sangat mematikan. Di sisi lain kurangnya empati terhadap masyarakat sehingga menimbulkan masalah mental, psikologis dan biologis pada tuna Susila. Dalam hal ini, empati terhadap tuna susila juga berperan penting dalam mempromosikan perubahan sosial yang lebih inklusif dan ramah bagi individu yang terlibat dalam tuna susila. Dalam membangun empati terhadap tuna susila, masyarakat perlu memperlakukan mereka dengan penuh rasa hormat, toleransi, dan pengertian. Dengan begitu, diharapkan akan tercipta lingkungan sosial yang lebih inklusif dan ramah bagi semua individu dalam masyarakat, melalui arsitektur. A medical condition called depression can have a negative impact on a person's thoughts, behavior, emotions, and mental health. Currently, there is a significant increase in the number of depression cases among university students. The Research and Assessment Team (TRACK) of the Department of Studies and Strategic Action of BEM Faculty of Psychology UI 2019 found that two out of three UI students experience high psychological distress. Many adolescents suffer from depression, but few seek professional help because the negative stigma in society prevents them from getting the help they need. Limited counseling space is a problem because each individual has different needs in dealing with mental health problems. So this project is designed as a depression prevention and recovery facility for UI students by using the Juhani Pallasma design strategy as a design foundation using the Phenomenological observation method with observations and interviews with UI health clinics and the Behavioral Architecture design method to map the dominant depression problems in students. Then, through the Space Perception design concept to create an atmosphere that supports the recovery process. The purpose of this design is to create a facility that serves as a means of prevention and recovery for students who experience depression. This facility aims to change the negative views that may exist and increase public awareness about the importance of mental health issues. In addition, this facility also provides a space for them to reduce pressure and tension as a first step in dealing with depression or as part of the recovery process from depression. Saat ini, terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan dalam jumlah kasus depresi di antara mahasiswa. Tim riset dan Kajian (TRACK) Departemen Kajian dan Aksi Startegis BEM Fakultas Psikologi UI 2019 menemukan bahwa dua dari tiga mahasiswa UI mengalami psychological distress yang tinggi. Banyak remaja yang menderita depresi, tetapi sedikit yang mencari bantuan dari professional karena stigma negative di masyarakat menghambat mereka untuk mendapatkan bantuan yang diperlukan. Ruang konseling yang terbatas menjadi permasalahan dikarenakan setiap individu memiliki kebutuhan yang berbeda-beda dalam menangani permasalahan kesehatan mentalnya. Sehingga proyek ini dirancang sebagai fasilitas pencegahan dan pemulihan depresi bagi mahasiswa UI dengan menggunakan strategi perancangan desain Juhani Pallasma sebagai landasan perancangan dengan menggunakan metode pengamatan Fenomenologi dengan observasi dan wawancara dengan klinik kesehatan UI serta metode desain Arsitektur Perilaku untuk melakukan pemetaan terkait permasalahan depresi yang dominan pada mahasiswa. Lalu, melalui konsep desain Space Perception agar tercipatanya suasana yang mendukung proses pemulihan. Tujuan dari rancangan ini adalah menciptakan fasilitas yang berfungsi sebagai sarana pencegahan dan pemulihan bagi mahasiswa yang mengalami depresi. Fasilitas ini bertujuan untuk mengubah pandangan negatif yang mungkin ada serta meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat mengenai pentingnya isu kesehatan mental. Selain itu, fasilitas ini juga memberikan ruang bagi mereka untuk mengurangi tekanan dan ketegangan sebagai langkah awal dalam menghadapi depresi atau sebagai bagian dari proses pemulihan dari depresi.

This Multimodal Sensations article explores embodied experiential metaphors. It focuses on the salient modalities of interaction with wood texture. As both an artist and researcher, I have been particularly concerned with how social semiotic theory can be applied to my work, and specifically, how concepts from multimodal analysis can be transformed into the process of multimodal artistic creation. This article reflects on an example linking a historic anniversary, the texture of ancient wood and interaction of a local participant audience. The analysis applies a combination of concepts gleaned from the theories of Theo van Leeuwen (2016), Juhani Pallasma (2012) and Kjetil Røed (2019) to participant reflections from an art project called ArtClimateRoad.

Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa bibliográfica, buscou-se suporte teórico nas reflexões de Gaston Bachelard (2005), Anne Cauquelin (2007), Michel Collot (2013) e Juhanni Pallasmaa (2017).

Abstract This special forum section of Emotions: History, Culture, Society moves forward scholarship on the history of the relationship between architecture and emotions. It specifically shows that while, on the face of it, talking about architecture and emotions appears anything but new, we still have a long way to go. In this introduction, I shall first provide a brief overview and critique of works such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception, Juhani Pallasmaa’s Eyes of the Skin, and Henri Lefebvre’s Production of Space, as well as literature on sites of massacres and commemoration, architecture and fear, and women and the city, to argue for an adequate and systematic engagement with the history of emotions and thus orient the reader and set the scene for what follows. I shall then outline this special forum’s contribution.

This article explores an age-old form of dialogical learning, havruta, which has been employed by Jews throughout the centuries to study the Torah and the Talmud, and evaluates the experiment of extending havruta from a couple of fellow students (haverim) to an international, multi-religious group reading philosophical texts together, and transferring the learning process from the Jewish house of study (in Hebrew: beit ha-Midrash, in German: Lehrhaus) to an online environment. Methodologically, the experiences from the online havruta are brought into a theory-practice feedback loop and are discussed from various theoretical angles: (1) The first section introduces how havruta was conducted traditionally and how Franz Rosenzweig, who in 1920 founded the Frankfurt Lehrhaus and invited Martin Buber to offer lecture courses, advanced havruta. (2) The second section explains how Rosenzweig’s pedagogical principles as distilled from his writings on education are applied and modified in the above-mentioned contemporary online reading group. (3) The third section draws on Buber’s philosophy of dialogue, Juhani Pallasmaa’s architectural theory and Michel Chion’s film theory in order to investigate the epistemological and pedagogical significance of different modes of listening, asking, and responding, and the role of trust for dialogical learning in local and online learning communities.

Abstract - The difference atmosphere between the dynamic and diverse on outer spaces, gradually becomes singular and static, is expected to be found in @Batubata. This is different from common architectural space which is only understood as hegemony of occulocentrism, that only focuses on visual studies. The study was conducted to scrutiny the formation of the atmosphere of space, by understanding the physical-spatial-material elements and unconscious peripheral sensations that experienced by the user subject. The atmosphere of space is abstract and intangible whose atmosphere can be felt through the medium of space in the built environment that is slow and encourages solitude. The study is done through two stages. The first stage is to describe the physical-spatial-material elements through elaboration of layering and transparency, dimensions and proportions, density and emptiness, and material based on Bert Bielefelt's spatial design theory. The second stage is to expose the peripheral vision felt by observers when experiencing spaces in @Batubata. Peripheral vision is felt simultaneously arising the emotions and imagination of its users. The elaboration was based on the theory presented by Juhanni Pallasmaa. The formation of atmosphere of the space is understood by the conclusions at these two stages. This is a study of the phenomenon that happens in architectural space. The method used is descriptivequalitative, data obtained from literature studies, field observations, interviews with architect planners and open questionnaires to the user subject. The study was conducted by reviewing the physical elements of spatial and material through initial observation, which was enriched by interviews and open questionnaires to space users. From the results of first phase analysis, it was concluded that the characters of the spaces were secluded, static and dense. In second stage analysis, the result was silent and calm space experience. From these two stages, it can be understood that @Batubata was able to provide an opportunity for visitors to feel solitude and slowness to experience the atmosphere through their peripheral vision. The subjects’ feelings and mood are always influenced the abstract formation of atmosphere of space. Key Words: @Batubata, physic-spatial-material, peripheral vision, atmosphere

In books such as The Eyes of the Skin, architectural theorist Juhani Pallasmaa posits unmediated sensual encounters as the site of authentic engagement with the built environment. Such ideas are prevalent in mainstream architectural discourse today. In this article, I show that they are also highly problematic. Pallasmaa rejects visual intentionality, construing it as the instrument of an objectifying reason that distances us from our ‘being-in-the-world’. Referring to the phenomenologist philosophies of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and indebted to Henri Bergson’s concept of duration through lived experience, Pallasmaa’s theory promises a poetic inhabitation of the world, irreducible to reason and characterised by an animistic embodiment, allegedly offering a more meaningful architectural experience. Informed by contemporary rationalist thought and drawing on neuroscientific, anthropological and philosophical arguments, I first argue that Pallasmaa’s project is weakened to the point of collapse by the misunderstanding of his intellectual resources, particularly with respect to the use of incompatible concepts of embodiment in Heidegger’s and Merleau-Ponty’s works. I then show how his ideas of embodiment, disinterested vision and sensuality constitute an impoverished account of lived experience that, far from overcoming alienation, mystifies it. I specifically discuss Pallasmaa’s analysis of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, his comparisons of human- and animal-created structures and his forays into neuroscience. Finally, I dispute Pallasmaa’s claim that an immediate sensual encounter is the route to authentic engagement with the world, and question whether the unmediated lived experience he yearns for is even possible.

Porém, enfatiza em seus escritos a importância da dimensão sensorial. Acredita nos sentidos humanos como elementos essenciais à percepção e compreensão dos espaços em sua integralidade. Escreveu livros como Os olhos da pele (2011), As mãos inteligentes, A imagem corporificada (2013) e Habitar (2017). Este livro – Essências (2018) reúne quatro ensaios que abordam a ideia de essência na arquitetura. O autor possui uma maneira de escrever e narrar que permite ao leitor desenvolver individualmente as ideias apontadas através de um discurso dialético e pretensamente inacabado.

El diseño universal, a pesar de su relevancia, tiene sus principios poco observados en el desarollo de diseños de estudiantes y profesionales. De manera tradicional, el acto de diseñar corresponde a la búsqueda de una respuesta a un problema mapeado. Con el fin de esbozar posibles enfoques de diseño que incorporen el diseño universal, este estudio llevó a cabo un análisis de tres espacios públicos desde la perspectiva de los principios del diseño universal de Connell et al (1997), reforzado por la percepción sensorial de Juhani Pallasmaa (2011) y el lenguaje de patrones de Christopher Alexander (1977). Los espacios fueron analizados mediante observación y análisis documental. El resultado es un enfoque de diseño centrado en las relaciones y dinámicas entre los futuros usuarios y el artefacto diseñado.

A sociedade atual é regida pelo excesso de imagens, atemporalidade, consumismo e uma espécie de capitalismo cultural. A arquitetura é impactada por essa realidade ao protagonizar a visão como uma espécie de ditadura do olho, que produz edifícios de formas exuberantes que não dialogam com as populações locais e nem consideram as características do lugar em que serão implantados, seus materiais e tectônica, resultando numa arquitetura de “estilo global”. Dentre os arquitetos que se contrapõe a essa forma de fazer arquitetura, está o suíço Peter Zumthor, ao discutir o conceito de atmosfera como prática para uma boa arquitetura. Nessa mesma narrativa, autores como Juhani Pallasmaa e Christian Norberg-Schulz, propõe a reflexão sobre a relação do homem contemporâneo com o espaço, a atmosfera e a noção do lugar.
