The ‘Van Lynden Collection’ comprises forty-four paintings that were hung in the Lyndenstein country house in Beetsterzwaag by Baron van Lynden (1827-1896) and his mother Cornelia van Borcharen (1789-1864), and forty-six paintings purchased from 1860 onwards, when the baron married Maria Catharina, Baroness van Pallandt (1834-1905), for their residence in The Hague. The baroness’s involvement is not mentioned in archival documents because of women’s legal incapacity at the time. The article corrects this by referring to the Van Lynden-Van Pallandt Collection and discussing the history of all the works. Lyndenstein was home to an almost encyclopaedic selection of finely painted works by Dutch Romantic artists to which Van Lynden, when a young man, added paintings from exhibitions of Living Artists that mostly had already received awards. Louwrens Hanedoes, himself a painter and a relative, might have mediated and represented the baron in purchasing. In their Hague residence, Van Lynden and Van Pallandt hung modern French works painted in a loose or even sketchy manner. These were acquired during visits they made together to sales and galleries in Paris and through their commercial relationship with Goupil & Cie (from 1884 Boussod, Valadon & Cie) and the firm of Wisselingh & Co, both with branches in the Netherlands. The collection from Lyndenstein arrived in the Rijksmuseum in 1899; in 1900 it was followed by the Hague collection, which had also been bequeathed but was then donated by Baroness van Pallandt during her lifetime. It was not possible to keep the Van Lynden-Van Pallandt Collection together because of the rapid expansion of the collection of late nineteenth-century paintings, the changing appreciation of modern art and the nationalist preference for Dutch art in general and the Hague School in particular, and long-term loans to other institutions. A number of the French masterpieces were not hung permanently until after the Rijksmuseum had been renovated (2013).

This paper argues that the Pallant v Morgan equity should not be recognised as an independent doctrine because it does not rest on any tenable jurisprudential basis. It shows that a characterisation based on ‘common intention’ should be rejected because it is inconsistent with established legal principles and commercial practice. The alternative explanation based on breach of fiduciary duty, as suggested by Etherton LJ in Crossco No. 4 Unlimited v Jolan Unlimited [2011] 2 All ER 754 fares no better, as there is no reason why the Pallant v Morgan equity cases should be considered separately from other instances of breach of fiduciary duty in law. Further, this account must however be read in light of the Court of Appeal's decision in Sinclair Investments (UK) Ltd v Versailles Trade Finance Ltd [2011] 3 WLR 1153 which ruled that proprietary relief is only allowed in circumstances where the breach amounts to abuse of the principal's asset. This requirement is particularly difficult to satisfy in the paradigm case of the Pallant v Morgan equity, save in the case of agency. But where there is a relationship of agency, a constructive trust will also arise in accordance with an established agency principle, resulting in duplication in results.

Repeated comments are made as to the similarity between the common intention constructive trust and proprietary estoppel, but there remains considerable confusion over the precise nature of this interrelationship. The constituent elements of each doctrine bear close comparison and, although their respective modes of operation remain distinct, they may lead to similar results. The recent redefinition of the Pallant v Morgan equity provides an opportunity to probe once more the interrelationship between these doctrines. The Pallant v Morgan1 equity explores the operation of the Rochefoucauld v Boustead2 doctrine in the context of the joint acquisition of land and demonstrates the enforceability of express oral intention based upon a wider range of unconscionablity than the detriment based conduct which dominates both the common intention constructive trust and estoppel.

W ostatnich dwóch dekadach, w związku ze wzmożoną aktywność terrorystyczną, wzrosło zainteresowanie badaniami czujników bojowych środków trujących, w szczególności sarinu. Ze względu na wysoką toksyczność sarinu, w praktyce laboratoryjnej stosowany jest związek o podobnej budowie chemicznej - dymetylo metylofosfonian (DMMP). Większość prac dotyczących wykrywania DMMP skupia się na poszukiwaniu materiałów czułych na ten związek chemiczny i ich modyfikacji w celu uzyskania jak najlepszych parametrów czujnika. Odpowiednie zaprojektowanie urządzenia o wysokiej czułości i selektywności, a jednocześnie o niskich kosztach produkcji i eksploatacji, wymaga dogłębnej znajomości mechanizmów oddziaływania wykrywanego gazu z materiałem czułym chemicznie. W przypadku DMMP, mechanizmy te zostały zbadane dla powszechnie stosowanych w czujnikach gazów półprzewodzących tlenków metali. Wadami tych materiałów są brak selektywności i wysokie temperatury pracy. Z uwagi na to, testowane są również materiały organiczne o niskich temperaturach pracy i wyższej selektywności. Jedną z szeroko stosowanych w elektronice, w tym w czujnikach gazów, grup półprzewodników organicznych są ftalocyjaniny. Kilka prac sygnalizowało czułość ftalocyjanin względem DMMP, jednak mechanizm sensorowy nie został wyczerpująco opisany. Celem tej pracy było opracowanie metodologii badania mechanizmów sensorowych i zastosowanie jej do opisania mechanizmów wykrywania DMMP przez ftalocyjaniny oraz struktury hybrydowe oparte o ftalocyjaniny, pallad i tlenek palladu. Zastosowana metodologia składała się z części teoretycznej i eksperymentalnej. W części teoretycznej wykorzystano metody chemii kwantowej do zamodelowania adsorpcji DMMP na badanych strukturach sensorowych. Do weryfikacji wyników teoretycznych posłużyły metody eksperymentalne, takie jak: spektroskopie fotoemisyjne (XPS i UPS), spektroskopia termodesorpcji oraz pomiar odpowiedzi sensorowych metodą rezystancyjną. Badania zostały wykonane dla dwóch grup struktur: dla ftalocyjaniny wodorowej (H2Pc) z palladem (Pd) i tlenkiem palladu (PdO) oraz dla ftalocyjanin metali. W pierwszej kolejności określono mechanizm sensorowy dla struktury H2Pc/Pd/PdO, która wykazała czułość na DMMP w temperaturze pokojowej. Wyniki modelowania teoretycznego wykazały, że DMMP adsorbuje na H2Pc poprzez oddziaływania fizyczne wzmacniane przez pallad zarówno w postaci metalicznej, jak i w postaci tlenku palladu. Oddziaływanie to wywołuje znaczną zmianę momentu dipolowego układu adsorbent-adsorbat, z niewielkim przesunięciem ładunku elektrycznego. Wyniki teoretyczne zostały potwierdzone doświadczalnie w badaniu składu chemicznego powierzchni struktury H2Pc/Pd/PdO i pomiarach odpowiedzi sensorowej. Następnie, w celu optymalizacji struktury sensorowej, zanalizowano mechanizm oddziaływania DMMP z ftalocyjaninami metali, w których DMMP tworzy wiązanie poprzez tlen z centralnym atomem ftalocyjaniny. W wyniku wstępnych obliczeń teoretycznych wybrano ZnPc do szczegółowej analizy mechanizmu sensorowego. Modelowanie adsorpcji DMMP na ZnPc pokazało, że następuje transfer elektronów z cząsteczki DMMP do ftalocyjaniny, przy czym ładunek pozostaje w większości zakumulowany na wierzchniej monowarstwie ZnPc, co prowadzi do powstania silnego dipola powierzchniowego. Wyniki teoretyczne zostały potwierdzone badaniami zmian elektronowych i chemicznych w cienkiej warstwie ZnPc. Dodatkowo, dla ftalocyjanin metali potwierdzono w modelowaniu teoretycznym analogię mechanizmu sensorowego dla sarinu i DMMP.

Post-translational modifications (PTMs), which biochemically modify proteins to generate diversity and control functionality, are important in the field of chemical biology research. However, typical bioconjugation methods involving nucleophilic addition of cysteine and lysine residues are limited by their lack of site-specificity. In this thesis, we have demonstrated the site-selective chemical modification of a variety of proteins through protein halogenation and subsequent pallado-biology strategies. The "Tag-and-Modify" approach, developed previously in our group and involving the creation of a protein tag for further manipulation, is a useful tool for site-selective chemical modification. Here, we envisioned extending its utility to a novel concept of [¹⁸F]-radiolabelling of proteins involving direct electrophilic fluorination, thus forming a C-F bond at a specific modification site and leading to the generation of protein species applicable for in vivo [¹⁸F]-PET imaging and diagnosis. We also explored several alternative methods for the installation of C-Br/C-I bonds onto a protein of interest. Our first attempts involved the biosynthetic incorporation of a synthetic bromotryptophan into the protein, however these processes were unsuccessful. As a workaround, we found IPy₂BF₄, an iodinating agent, to be very effective as a direct method for the site-specific installation of C-I bonds on tyrosine/histidine residues of proteins. We subsequently demonstrated novel and efficient palladium-catalysed cross-couplings of the resultant iodinated tyrosine/histidine moieties, leading to the creation of new C-C bonds. This approach was compatible with a wide range of functionally diverse boronic acids, using a water-soluble and phosphine-ligand-free Pd-complex catalyst under fully aqueous conditions. Our novel, successful method for C-C bond formation onto proteins is potentially applicable to the initial investigation of challenging in vivo Pd cross-coupling of thyroglobulin, based on our achievement of protein labelling under ex vivo conditions. In summary, we are able to create new chemical tools for the site-selective/site-specific chemical modification of proteins, enabling their use as biological probes.

Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest opracowanie nowych, efektywnych, selektywnych i wygodnych w praktycznych zastosowaniach układów katalitycznych do syntezy wybranych pochodnych pirydyny via sprzęganie odpowiednio funkcjonalizowanych pirydyn, katalizowane kompleksami palladu. Podstawową metodą stosowaną przeze mnie w syntezie była reakcja Stillego. Przyjęto, iż układów katalitycznych dla badanych reakcji należy poszukiwać wśród układów generowanych in situ – z trwałego, łatwo dostępnego prekursora (kompleksu palladu) oraz ligandów zewnętrznych (głównie fosfinowych). Wobec powyższego, zakres pracy obejmował: opracowanie układu katalitycznego i warunków reakcji sprzęgania 5-bromo-2-tributylostannylopirydyny z 2,6-dijodopirydyną, prowadzącej do uzyskania 5,5”-dibromo-2,2’:6’,2”-terpirydyny, a w szczególności: zbadanie wpływu struktury prekursora (kompleksu palladu) na właściwości katalityczne otrzymanych in situ, w reakcji z ligandem zewnętrznym, aktywnych form; określenie wpływu donorowo-akceptorowych właściwości ligandów zewnętrznych na aktywność i trwałość otrzymanych układów katalitycznych; zbadanie możliwości zastosowania innych substratów (tzn. 5-bromo-2-trimetylostannylopirydyny oraz innych 2,6-dihalogenopirydyn) w badanej reakcji; określenie wpływu warunków reakcji (temperatury, rozpuszczalnika, stężenia) na wynik reakcji; zbadanie, na ile wyniki badań uzyskane dla syntezy pochodnej 2,2’:6’,2”-terpirydyny mogą być wykorzystane do syntezy bromowej pochodnej 2,2’-bipirydyny i bromowej pochodnej 2-fenylopirydyny; opracowanie układu katalitycznego do syntezy 5,5’-dibromo-2,2’-bipirydyny i 5-bromo-2-fenylopirydyny; opracowanie metodyki wydzielania i oczyszczania otrzymanych produktów, tj. 5,5”-dibromo-2,2’:6’,2”-terpirydyny, 5,5’-dibromo-2,2’-bipirydyny i 5-bromo-2-fenylopiry-dyny; otrzymanie kilkugramowych próbek czystych produktów sprzęgania (ligandów) – 5,5”-dibromo-2,2’:6’,2”-terpirydyny, 5,5’-dibromo-2,2’-bipirydyny i 5-bromo-2-fenylopiry-dyny. Wszystkie otrzymane ligandy, tzn. 5,5”-dibromo-2,2’:6’,2”-terpirydyna, 5,5’-dibromo-2,2’-bipirydyna i 5-bromo-2-fenylopirydyna mogą być następnie łatwo dalej funkcjo-nalizowane. Dalsza funkcjonalizacja jest przedmiotem odrębnych prac doktorskich. Atomy bromu podstawiane są mianowicie ugrupowaniem 2,2’-bitiofen-5-ylowym, a otrzymane w ten sposób pochodne tiofenu wykorzystywane są do otrzymywania polimerów przewodzących (politiofenów) lub kompleksów luminescencyjnych. Badania realizowane w ramach niniejszej pracy są fragmentem grantu (Nr 3 T09A 147 29) pt.: „Izomeryzacja układów allilowych: nowe reakcje, nowe układy katalityczne, nowe zastosowania”, realizowanego w latach 2005-2008 przez Zakład Chemii Nieorganicznej i Koordynacyjnej. Jeden z wątków badawczych tego projektu był poświęcony metalopolimerom należącym do politiofenów, zawierających w swojej strukturze fragmenty pirydynowe.

Questa tesi, dedicata all’opera di Pallada di Alessandria (IV sec. d.C.) priva a tutt’oggi sia di edizione critica che di commento filologico-letterario, è divisa in due parti: una parte generale dedicata alla discussione di alcuni aspetti della produzione del poeta e un commento filologicoletterario parola per parola di una sezione del corpus epigrammatico, gli epigrammi gnomicofilosofici. La prima parte consta di sei capitoli. Nel primo si affronta il grosso problema della cronologia palladiana, i capitoli II, III, IV sono interamente dedicati ad una trattazione dettagliata rispettivamente della poetica, filosofia e religione di Pallada, nel capitolo V viene fornita una descrizione delle principali caratteristiche metriche e prosodiche del gruppo degli epigrammi gnomici e filosofici, il capitolo VI infine offre una rapida disamina dei manoscritti che ci hanno tramandato il testo palladiano. Nella seconda parte, che consiste nel commento parola per parola, per ogni epigramma, oltre al testo greco, è stata fornita la traduzione italiana. Come testo base è stata utilizzata l’edizione di L. Ce mémoire traite de l'utilisation d'une réaction pallado-catalysée de borylation pour l'obtention d'organoboranes et leur implication dans la synthèse de molécules à haute valeur ajoutée ou d'intérêt synthétique. Cette réaction utilise un pourvoyeur de bore original, le (N,N-diisopropylamino)borane, dérivé de la famille des aminoboranes monomères. Dans un premier temps, la synthèse d'amino-oxazoles, précurseurs de biarylcyclopeptides, a été réalisée via une réaction multi-composants entre un aldéhyde à terminaison acide arylboronique et divers isocyanoacétamides. Les biaryles sont obtenus par macrocyclisation décrochante sur support solide ionique. Ensuite, la synthèse de triazènes arylboroniques, des molécules difonctionnelles polyvalentes, a été réalisé. Ces outils synthétiques ont été engagés avec succès dans des réactions de Suzuki-Miyaura, et plus particulièrement dans des couplages originaux boro-sélectifs. L'utilisation de ces triazènes boroniques a également permis de réaliser la synthèse de molécules complexes de type DiSpiro[Fluorène-Indénofluorène-Fluorène] (DSFIFs), précurseurs de matériaux conducteurs et luminescents.

The ancient Samnites of south-central Italy have been cast by both ancient and modern authors as rough-and-tumble highlanders due to their habitation of the rugged river valleys of the southern Apennines and their ferocious resistance to Roman expansion in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. The most visible remainders of Samnite civilization are the great fortresses of polygonal masonry that crown many hilltops and mountain peaks in the modern regioni of Abruzzo, Molise, and Campania, around which Samnite farms, villages, and sanctuaries coalesced. Since the publication of Edward Togo Salmon’s Samnium and the Samnites and the wide adoption of Adriano La Regina’s pagus-vicus model for Apenninic settlement, there has been a marked resistance in modern scholarship to characterizing the largest of these fortified centers as cities. This stands in stark contrast with ancient authors, in particular Livy, who frequently refer to Samnite population centers in urban terms. This thesis defends the ancient view of the Samnites as an urban people, with permanently occupied hill-forts as their cities. It begins with a close examination of Livy’s monumental history of Rome, in particular his narration of the Samnite Wars in the seventh through tenth books. This first chapter analyzes the terminology Livy employs to describe Samnite cities and their features, and reconstructs from the text a Roman understanding of the city. The second and third chapters review the archaeological evidence from two well-documented Samnite fastnesses, Monte Pallano and Monte Vairano, in light of this understanding to illustrate how the Romans could understand them as cities. These chapters further illuminate aspects of community, state formation, and spatial organization at these cities in light of Michael Mann’s IEMP theory of power relations and Roberto Camagni’s factors for urban genesis. This thesis provides an alternative interpretation of the literary and archaeological evidence that is more faithful to the former and as such provides a firmer foundation for understanding the latter.

Les travaux de thèse présentés dans ce manuscrit portent essentiellement sur la préparation, le criblage et l’utilisation des catalyseurs hétérogènes à base de polysaccharides. L’objectif principal du projet de thèse a plus particulièrement consisté à évaluer deux polysaccharides : les alginates et le chitosane en tant que supports renouvelables pour la catalyse hétérogène. Ces deux types de polysaccharides ont des structures et des propriétés physico-chimiques très différentes : les alginates sont connus pour être de bons complexants de métaux di ou trivalents de par la présence des fonctions carboxylates dans leur matrice, le chitosane résulte quant à lui de l’assemblage d’unités N-glucosamine pouvant être facilement modifiées chimiquement.Dans un premier temps, nos travaux ont essentiellement portés sur des catalyseurs bimétalliques Mn+ Pd supportés sur alginate dont nous avons évalué l’activité catalytique dans les réactions de couplage C—C de Mizoroki-Heck, Sonogashira et Suzuki-Miyaura. D’une manière générale, seuls les catalyseurs à base de nanoparticules de palladium ont montré une réactivité intéressante pour la catalyse de la réaction de Suzuki-Miyaura. Par la suite, nous avons également étudié les réactions d’oxydations d’alcools catalysées par du palladium (II) complexé à l’alginate. Cette étude nous a permis d’identifier deux catalyseurs actifs vis-à-vis de l’oxydation d’alcools allyliques et benzyliques.Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons développé de nouveaux ligands de type NHC en vue de les greffer sur la matrice chitosane : un ligand NHC pour les réactions de métathèse d’oléfines, et plusieurs ligands NHC de type pincer CNC pour les réactions de couplage C—C dans l’eau. Bien que les performances catalytiques des systèmes hétérogènes correspondant soient limitées, ces travaux ont conduit à l’élaboration de nouveaux ligands amphiphiles construits autour d’un noyau pyrazine porteurs de quatre ligands carbéniques. Après complexation de métaux tels que le palladium ou l’or, ces systèmes conduisent à des nanocatalyseurs ayant des performances catalytiques intéressantes. Enfin, dans un troisième temps, nous avons développé une nouvelle réaction de cyanation décarboxylante pallado-catalysée permettant de transformer en une étape des acides carboxyliques aromatiques en benzonitriles correspondants. Outre son intérêt synthétique, cette réaction présente un grand intérêt pour le marquage isotopique
This work describes the preparation, screening and use of heterogeneous catalysts based on polysaccharides. The main goal of our project was to evaluate two polysaccharides: alginates and chitosan as renewable supports for heterogeneous catalysis.Alginates are known to form gels with most di- and multivalent cations due to the presence of the carboxylate functions of their matrix. And chitosan is an attractive polysaccharide for application in catalysis owing to the presence of readily functionalizable amino group and its insolubility in organic solvents.First, our work focused on evaluating the catalytic activity of bimetallic Mn+-Pd catalysts supported on alginate in C—C coupling reactions. Among them, one system demonstrated remarkable catalytic properties for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. Then, the oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by Alginate-Mn+-Pd2+ catalyst was investigated. Two catalysts demonstrated good activity for oxidation of benzylic and allylic alcohol.In a second time, we developed new NHC ligands in order to anchor them on chitosan: two new NHC ligands for olefin metathesis and several NHC pincer CNC ligands for C—C coupling reactions in water. A palladium complex obtained with one our new ligand bearing long alkyl chains showed good activity in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling in pure water.Finally, a new palladium (II) catalyzed decarboxylative cyanation reaction was investigated. This methodology is the first example of direct conversion of aryl carboxylic acid into the corresponding aryl nitrile. This reaction is well adapted to labeled compound synthesis

This chapter describes how equitable interests in land are acquired by the creation of a trust. It addresses the acquisition of resulting and constructive trusts of land. A resulting trust arises in favour of A when A purchases or contributes to the purchase of land held by B, or in some cases where A transfers land to B without receiving anything in return. Constructive trusts arise in a number of circumstances in which it is considered unconscionable for the legal owner to assert his or her own beneficial ownership, and to deny the beneficial interest of another. They arise under the doctrine in Rochefoucauld v Boustead, and the Pallant v Morgan equity. The doctrine in Rochefoucauld v Boustead imposes a constructive trust to prevent a transferee of land from fraudulently relying on the absence of compliance with formalities to deny a trust pursuant to which the land was transferred. The Pallant v Morgan constructive trust arises where one party acquires land pursuant to an informal commercial joint venture and reneges on an agreement that another party will have an interest in the land. The trust has been categorized as a form of ‘common intention constructive trust’ but this categorization is contentious.

It details how Pallante waited for Togliatti in front of the Chamber of Deputies building and fired four shots, gravely wounding Togliatti.

The article analyzes the perception of Japan in the middle of the 19th century through the eyes of the Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. As secretary of Yevfimiy Putyatin’s mission (who concluded the first Russian-Japanese treaty in 1855), he kept travel notes, which later turned into a famous essay about a trip to Japan. The study is based on a rare edition of “Russians in Japan”, published in 1855, a few years before the appearance of the famous book “Frigate Pallada”. Goncharov’s notes marked the beginning of a new stage of awareness about Japan in the Russian Empire. His impressions added new colors to the portrayal of the country of Rising Sun, which Russians already knew from notes about the captivity of Vasily Golovnin (1816) and the three-volume work of the famous German Japanologist Philipp Franz von Siebold (1854). The valuable edition of Goncharov’s notes from the Library of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University (with an inscription from the author to Putyatin) differs from the text in the “Frigate Pallada” that was subjected to severe revision. Unlike this later version, this one, in many ways, resembles the unredacted travel notes made by Gonncharov during the Putyatin’s mission. Also, Iosif Goshkevich, who mastered the Japanese language during his stay in the country, accompanied Yevfimiy Putyatin as an interpreter. “Russian-Japanese Dictionary” (in fact, it is a Japanese-Russian dictionary) was published by him in collaboration with Tachibana Kosai in 1857. Two copies of this dictionary are available in the faculty’s Library (with autographs). One was a gift from Nicholas of Japan, and another - from the faculty teacher Kurono Yoshibumi. The authors aim to familiarize the general public with these rarities of the Library, which date back to the time of the conclusion of the first treaty between Russia and Japan and are directly related to the beginning of Russia’s in-depth acquaintance with Japan.
