Streszczenie:
The influence of barium doping on the oxygen-ion diffusion and phase transition in the La2Mo2-yWyO9-δ (y=0, 1.0) oxide-ion conductors has been systematically investigated via dielectric techniques. In the Ba-doped La2Mo2O9 samples there are only two dielectric relaxation peaks Pd1 and Pd2, which are associated with the short-distance diffusion of oxygen vacancies. But in the Ba-doped La2MoWO9 members, three peaks are detected, including peak Pd1, Pd2, and peak Ph. The last is associated with the phase transition process from the static disordered state to the dynamic disordered state of oxygen ion/vacancy distribution.

The relaxation and phase transition behaviors of rare-earth ion substituted fast oxide-ion conductors (La1-xRex)2Mo2O9 (Re=Nd, Gd) were investigated by internal friction (IF) measurement in the temperature range 300 K - 950 K. Three different IF peaks (labeled as PL, PH, and PG, respectively) were observed in the rare-earth ion doped La2Mo2O9 samples. Peak PL corresponds to short diffusion processes of oxygen ions among different oxygen vacancy sites. Peak PH is associated with the static/dynamic disorder transition in oxygen ion distribution. Peak PG is a newly discovered peak embodying phase transition-like characteristics and is suggested to be related to order-disorder transition associated with the rearrangement of La/ Re sub-lattice.

The effects of tungsten doping in La2Mo2–yWyO9 (y =0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.4) samples were studied using dielectric relaxation measurements. The results indicate that the solubility of W6+ in La2Mo2O9 sample is about 25mol%, W6+ can suppress the α/β phase transition in the La2Mo2O9. Additional to the low-temperature relaxation peak Pd associated with oxygen ion diffusion, a new dielectric loss peak Ph associated with a phase transition from the static disordered state to the dynamic disordered state of oxygen ion distribution was observed around 740 K. The conductivity of La2Mo1.9W0.1O9 sample is higher than that of the pure La2Mo2O9, and then decrease with the increasing of the tungsten doping in La2Mo2–yWyO9 (y = 0.5, 1.0) samples in the whole measurement temperature.

Streszczenie:
The novel oxide-ion conductors (La1-xAx)2Mo2O9-δ (A = Ca, Bi, K, x = 0 ~ 0.075) are investigated in this paper by internal friction and dielectric relaxation techniques. Two relaxation peaks associated with the short-distance diffusion of oxygen vacancies were observed, indicating that there are at least two relaxation processes for diffusion of oxygen vacancies. Doping at La site with different elements shifts both relaxation peaks toward higher temperature and increases the activation energy of oxygen vacancy diffusion. In the case of internal friction, the height of the higher-temperature peak (dominant component) decreases with increasing doping content. In the case of dielectric relaxation, however, the variation of the peak heights as a function of doping content exhibits a maximum around 2.5 % K and 5 % Bi. After properly doping, the conductivity at low temperature of doped La2Mo2O9 increases by different degrees, and a peak of the conductivity at 500° C is observed in the doping content where the highest dielectric relaxation peak appears. Based on the experimental results and the crystalline structure, the mechanism of oxygen vacancy diffusion in (La1-xAx)2Mo2O9-δ samples is discussed.

Streszczenie:
We investigate the effect of cation size in the dc activation energy needed for oxygen ion conductivity, Edc, in highly disordered pyrochlore-type ionic conductors A2B2O7. Twenty compositions of general formula Ln2Zr2-yTiyO7 (Ln = Y, Dy and Gd) and Gd2-yLayZr2O7, were prepared by mechanical milling and their electrical properties measured by using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures. We also evaluate, by using Ngai’s Coupling Model, the effect of cation radii RA and RB, on the microscopic potential-energy barrier, Ea, that oxygen ions encounter when jumping into neighboring vacant sites. We find that for a fixed B-site cation radius RB, both activation energies decrease with increasing A-site cation size, RA, as a consequence of the increment in the unit cell volume. In contrast, and for a given RA size, the dc activation energy Edc of the Ln2Zr2-yTiyO7 series increases when the average RB size increases. The latter behavior is explained in terms of the enhanced interactions among mobile oxygen ions as the structural disorder increases when RB approaches RA.

Materials with an average particle size of less than about 50 nm often show new or at least enhanced physical properties. In many cases nanocrystalline ionic conductors exhibit a high increase of cation, e. g. Li+, or anion, e. g. F−, diffusivity. In the present contribution we review recent studies on ion dynamics in nanocrystalline ion conductors, both single-phase systems and composites, being prepared by high-energy ball milling. These include, e.g., LiTaO3, Li2O:Al2O3, LiF:Al2O3, BaF2, CaF2, BaF2:CaF2 and (BaF2:CaF2):Al2O3. Dynamic properties were probed by 7Li and/or 19F NMR line shape and relaxation as well as ion conductivity measurements.

This paper emphasizes the fact that valuable information on the dynamics of high-Tc super-conductors is concealed in that part of the spin-lattice relaxation which arises from quadrupolar interactions. We briefly discuss the problem how to disentangle magnetic and quadrupolar time dependent interactions if both are present, thus leading to multiexponential magnetization recovery laws. We then discuss two examples from our studies of the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 where the identification of a quadrupolar contribution to the spin-lattice relaxation has been es-sential to draw the relevant conclusions. One example is concerned with the charge fluctuations associated with an electronic crossover showing up in the oxygen relaxation. The second example is dealing with the separation of charge and spin excitations and the validity of the single-spin fluid model.

Streszczenie:
The composite SmBa2Cu3O7-δ (Sm-123), obtained by the substitution of the ion Y for Sm in the very well known and studied YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y-123), is potentially attractive for better understanding superconductivity mechanisms and for its applications as electronic devices. Sm-123 samples show higher critical temperatures than Y-123 ones do and a larger solubility of Sm in Ba-Cu-O solvent, which makes their growth process faster. When oxygen is present interstitially, it strongly affects the physical properties of the material. The dynamics of oxygen can be investigated by anelastic spectroscopy measurements, a powerful technique for the precise determination of the oscillation frequency and the internal friction when atomic jumps are possible. Anelastic spectroscopy allows determining the elasticity modulus (related to the oscillation frequency) and the elastic energy loss (related to the internal friction) as a function of the temperature. The sample was also investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and electric resistivity. The results obtained show a thermally activated relaxation structure composed by at least 3 relaxation processes. These processes may be attributed to the jumps of oxygen atoms present of the Cu-O plane in the orthorhombic phase.

Streszczenie:
The ongoing energy transition towards the substitution of fossil fuels for renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources, leads to the search for alternative energy conversion systems. In this context, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) are efficient electrochemical devices that are able to convert chemical energy in the form of fuels into electricity [1]. The efficiency of SOFCs at low operating temperatures is mainly limited by the high polarization resistance of the cathode [2], reason why several strategies are being proposed to enhance the electrochemical activity of such electrodes. Among them, optimizing the electrode microstructure by different preparation methods, such as infiltration and spray-pyrolysis deposition, have rendered excellent and durable electrochemical performance [3]. In addition, the tailoring of the electrode/electrolyte interface by incorporating functional layers have proven to be particularly useful to improve electrode properties [4]. The present work proposes an alternative approach by the incorporation of several nanocomposite functional layers at the interface between the traditional La0.8Sr0.2MnO3- d (LSM) cathode and the Zr0.84Y0.16O2- d (YSZ) electrolyte. Different compositions that combined LSM with different ionic conductors, i.e. LSM-Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (CGO) and LSM-Bi1.5Y0.5O3 (BYO), were directly deposited by spray-pyrolysis on the YSZ electrolyte in a single step by a co-synthesis method. The nanocomposite functional layers were studied by different structural and microstructural techniques, such as XRD and SEM-EDX. They exhibited lower grain size compared to that of the homologous single phase; specially the LSM-CGO nanocomposite showed improved adherence to the electrolyte without the presence of any crack or delamination, with the lowest grain sizes of 12.54 and 8.56 nm for LSM and CGO, respectively, after annealing at 1000 ºC. SEM images revealed a dense functional layer with a thickness of about 750 nm (Fig 1A). Overall, all functional layers showed a dense structure with excellent adherence to the electrolyte and no chemical reaction could be detected between the cell components. The electrochemical properties of functional layers were also investigated by impedance spectroscopy, distribution of relaxation time, dc-bias and I-V curves. The incorporation of any functional layer reduced the Area Specific Resistance (ASR) values of the cathode, which was associated with a reduced charge transfer resistance and a fast oxide ion transport at the electrode/electrolyte interface as consequence of the good ionic/electronic conductivity of the functional layer. The polarization resistance at 700 ºC was of 1.71 and 0.46 Ω cm2 for the LSM cathode without and with LSM-CGO active layer, respectively (Fig. 1B). The performance of the single cell with LSM-CGO as functional layer, Ni-YSZ|YSZ|LSM-CGO/LSM, revealed maximum power densities of 1.20 and 0.85 W cm-2 at 800 and 700 ºC, respectively, values that were considerably higher than those obtained for the cell without any functional layer, i.e. 0.79 and 0.46 W cm-2. The obtained results confirm the improved performance of SOFCs when tailoring the cathode/electrolyte interface by incorporating a functional layer with nanostructured features and mixed ionic-electronic conducting properties. With that in mind, this research may serve to improve the electrochemical performance of solid oxide cells at intermediate/low operating temperatures without compromising the cell’s integrity. Streszczenie:
AbstractWe analyze in this work the influence of ordering on the oxygen ion dynamics in the ionic conductor Gd2(Ti0.65Zr0.35)2O7, prepared by mechanical milling. As-prepared powder phase presents a metastable anion deficient fluorite-type of structure below 800°C becoming a disordered pyrochlore above this temperature. Such phase transformation implies a significant increase in the ionic conductivity of this material as a result of a systematic decrease in the activation energy for the dc conductivity, from 1.23 to 0.78 eV. Electrical conductivity relaxation is well described by the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) stretched exponential function with the fractional exponent n decreasing systematically with increasing sintering temperature (increasing ordering) as a result of decreasing ion-ion interactions in better ordered samples.

Streszczenie:
AbstractIn solid ionic conductors, the hopping motion of the mobile charged defects is strongly influenced by their mutual repulsive interaction. Therefore, their jump diffusion ist not a random process. Instead, correlated forward-backward hopping sequences are a common phenomenon, constituting the elementary steps of jump relaxation. The microscopic dynamics of the relaxation is described in a simple model which yields the frequency spectrum of the hopping motion. With the help of this function, it is possible to explain experimental spectra displaying the so-called “universal” dynamic response. In particular we reproduce the frequency dependent ionic conductivity of fast ion conductors and the arcs in their complex-conductivity and complex-permittivity planes. The model also explains the non-BPP-type behavior of spin-lattice relaxation times and the broad components of quasielastic neutron scattering spectra. Examples are presented and discussed.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In this overview, we summarize the phenomenon of thermotransport (the close coupling of mass transport and heat transport) in two fast ion conductors: yttria-doped zirconia and gadolinia-doped ceria. We focus on two recent molecular dynamics calculations using the Green-Kubo formalism. We show that the Onsager thermotransport cross coefficient (mass-heat coupling) is negative, meaning that oxygen ions would drift, in principle, to the hot side in a temperature gradient. Simulation results presented in this overview show reasonable agreement with available experimental data for thermal conductivity. Results of this study suggest that the coupling between mass and heat transport in oxygen ion electrolytes could have significant effect for practical applications.

Streszczenie:
ABSTRACTIncreasing interest in the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 has led to considerations of using TiO2 nanoparticles in energy generation. In order to better understand the electron-hole relaxation of nano scale TiO2 structures, it is important to start with an understanding of TiO2 synthesis building blocks. The solvated titanium (IV) ion is a precursor found in synthesis methods of colloidal TiO2 nanostructures. This simplest test compound may reflect some common basic electronic features for larger structures composed of Ti(IV) coordinated with oxygen. For this computational study, a model of Ti(OH)4 with tetrahedral coordination was created. To simulate the electronic properties of a solution of Ti(IV), the model was surrounded with 27 H2O molecules. The model was explored by means of standard density functional theory (DFT) molecular dynamics (MD) followed by nonadiabatic electron dynamics computed with Reduced Density Matrix approach combined with “on-the-fly coupling”. Results were generated with Vienna ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional, plane wave basis set, and projector augmented wave (PAW) potentials. The absorption spectra, MD, and electron-hole relaxation rates are presented for the Ti(OH)4 model at various ambient temperatures. The electron-hole relaxation rates show a non-linear dependence on temperature and were found to be near the same order of magnitude as electron-hole relaxation rates in bulk TiO2 calculations. A video of the geometry optimization can be found online.[1]

Streszczenie:
Abstract Optimizing the oxygen content of silicon oxides used as anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries is critical since it has diverse effects on lithium storage properties. However, the atomic-scale understanding of the effect of the oxygen content on structural evolution of the materials, particularly during delithiation is still limited. With this aim, we employ an iterative lithium extraction-relaxation algorithm based on reactive molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the dynamic processes of various silicon oxides. Our study highlights the effect of the oxygen content on various lithium storage properties, including the energetics of the interaction, lithium diffusion behaviors, lithium entrapment, structural reversibility during cycling, and mechanical properties. In particular, the simulations show that although increasing the oxygen content can significantly reduce the percentage of volume expansion during lithiation, which is a major cause of poor cycle retention of silicon- and silicon oxide-based anodes, this leads to an increased amount of the trapped lithium and an irreversible structural change during the reverse process. As contradictory conditions are required to achieve high specific capacity, long cycle life, and high coulombic efficiency, this atomistic study could provide a fundamental understanding beneficial for optimizing the oxygen content toward the development of silicon oxide-based anodes.
