Streszczenie:
A new garbage collector, called ThinGC, is producing out-of-memory errors when applied to certain user applications. ThinGC introduces a classification of objects as either hot or cold, where hot objects are currently in use by the application and cold objects are not. The heap is partitioned into two isolated areas, hot storage and coldstorage, separating the differently classified objects. When cold objects are needed bythe application again, they are first moved back into hot storage - a process called reheating. Reheating requires that space is available in hot storage to accommodate the object. If the reheating fails, ThinGC crashes reporting an out-of-memory error, as ThinGC disallows hot objects to reside in cold storage. As it stands, ThinGC's approach in performing the reheat is flawed, leading to manyfailed reheats when running reheat-prone applications with limited memory space. This thesis sets out to reduce the amount of out-of-memory errors produced byreheats in ThinGC. A strategy which reserves hot storage space specifically forreheats is proposed, and implemented into ThinGC. Evaluation shows that the strategy is successful in avoiding applications crashing. Our implementation comes of short, however, as it puts the burden on the user to configure the amount of memory to reserve for the strategy to work well - a task for which there is no obvious optimal approach.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation examines how the Battle of Hong Kong’s negative legacy has developed in Canada. By using the concept of “zombie myths,” which was first introduced in Zombie Myths of Australian Military History, this study will examine how many individuals, including historians, journalists, and authors, contributed to these myths’ creation and propagation for starting from the Second World War and continuing today. The study draws its conclusions from official texts and histories, personal recollections, newspaper articles, popular historical works, and academic monographs and articles, all relating to the battle. This thesis is separated into two halves. The first part of the study focuses on the history of the battle by exploring several myths that surround it. One of the most contentious myths concerns why the Canadian troops were sent to the colony in the first place. The relationship between the British and Canadian armies from 1914 to 1941 plus the defence planning of Hong Kong from 1841 to 1941, are two crucial elements that will be analyzed in order to vital context about the Canadian reinforcement. The selection of the units of “C” Force and their training are subject to many myths that seek to present the Canadian units as untrained. These will be dispelled through an investigation of training records. The memory of the battle itself has been influenced by overtly nationalistic myths that seek to blame the other nationalities in the garrison for the fall of the colony while simultaneously presenting one’s own national troops as the garrison’s best fighters. Canadian authors and historians are no exception to this trend. Records created by various soldiers, including British, Canadian, and Indian sources, demonstrate that the iii Canadians at Hong Kong fought just as well as the rest of the garrison. The second part of the dissertation focuses on the memory of the battle. Discussions of the Hong Kong Inquiry and the television miniseries The Valour and the Horror bookend a discussion of the factors relating to the battle’s legacy since the Second World War including the Canadian government’s treatment of the Hong Kong veterans and the lack of official recognition. This study delivers a much-needed re-examination of the battle and its legacy in Canada. By explaining and dispelling the numerous myths related to the Battle of Hong Kong, a clearer understanding of the battle’s legacy can be achieved.

Streszczenie:
Non-heterosexually identified young people, particularly those with a lesbian identity, have always experienced a marginalised position within Australian culture (Burnett, 1997; Gamson, 2000; Signorile, 1995; Thonneman, 1999). There is very little empirical research available which explores the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lives (Brown, 1995; Burnett, 1997; Gamson, 2000). Hence myths, stereotypes, invisibility, lack of understanding and marginalisation of non-heterosexual identified people continue to be perpetuated in mainstream Australian society (Baird, 2005; Burnett, 1997; MacBride-Steward, 2004). The anthropological study presented in this dissertation was designed to explore and theorise the lived experiences of young lesbians post-initial coming-out within an Australian context using Memory Work methodology (Haug, 1987). The first goal of this project was to describe and provide details of the under researched and misunderstood lives of young lesbians between the ages of 23 and 33 years of age who had identified as lesbian for between two and ten years; what is termed here as post-initial coming-out. The second goal of the study was to gain insight into how young lesbians, post-initial coming-out, make sense of their lives, selves and identities, and positioning within society given the negative myths and stereotypes which currently exist within the general population in relation to people with non-heterosexual identities. The literature and data presented throughout the dissertation highlight the issues of invisibility, marginalisation, and homophobia experienced by each of the participants within a predominately heterosexual society. They also emphasised the inner strength and resilience developed by each of the participants in the face of adversity as they attempted to construct and make sense of their self narrative and positioning as defined by themselves and the positioning and identity imposed upon them by significant others. The data have been organised into four main focus areas; negotiating the family, work, heterosexual and lesbian landscapes. Lastly, the study sought to further develop and refine the Memory Work methodology (Haug, 1987), particularly as it pertains to a doctoral research program. This study has been able, via the use of Memory Work methodology, to provide richly descriptive and in-depth snap-shots of the lives of young lesbians post-initial coming-out in an Australian context which represents a unique contribution to the research literature. The study concludes with reflections on the methodology as it pertains to a doctoral research program and recommendations for further research which have developed as a result of this investigation. The five participants in this study were strong, independent, brave young wimmin searching for acceptance and an understanding of their post-initial coming-out lesbian identities in an Australian context. While there were only a small number of participants, their memories and experiences yield rich new insights into the everyday lives and experiences of young lesbians.

Choi, Jun-shik. "ERROR CONTROL AND EFFICIENT MEMORY MANAGEMENT FOR SPARSE INTEGRAL EQUATION SOLVERS BASED ON LOCAL-GLOBAL SOLUTION MODES". UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/ece_etds/64.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation presents and analyzes two new algorithms for sparse direct solution methods based on the use of local-global solution (LOGOS) modes. One of the new algorithms is a rigorous error control strategy for LOGOS-based matrix factorizations that utilize overlapped, localizing modes (OL-LOGOS) on a shifted grid. The use of OL-LOGOS modes is critical to obtaining asymptotically efficient factorizations from LOGOS-based methods. Unfortunately, the approach also introduces a non-orthogonal basis function structure. This can cause errors to accumulate across levels of a multilevel implementation, which has previously posed a barrier to rigorous error control for the OL-LOGOS factorization method. This limitation is overcome, and it is shown that it is possible to efficiently decouple the fundamentally non-orthogonal factorization subspaces in a manner that prevents multilevel error propagation. This renders the OL-LOGOS factorization error controllable in a relative RMS sense. The impact of the new, error-controlled OL-LOGOS factorization algorithm on computational resource utilization is discussed and several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the performance of the improved algorithm relative to previously reported results. The second algorithmic development considered is the development of efficient out-of-core (OOC) versions of the OL-LOGOS factorization algorithm that allow associated software tools to take advantage of additional resources for memory management. The proposed OOC algorithm incorporates a memory page definition that is tailored to match the flow of the OL-LOGOS factorization procedure. Efficiency of the function of the part is evaluated using a quantitative approach, because the tested massive storage device performances do not follow analytical results. The performance latency and the memory usage of the resulting OOC tools are compared with in-core performance results. Both the new error control algorithm and the OOC method have been incorporated into previously existing software tools, and the dissertation presents results for real-world simulation problems.

Streszczenie:
In and out of memory: exploring the tension between remembering and forgetting when recalling 9/11, a traumatic event. My research is an unravelling of a traumatic memory to describe, understand and answer questions about the 'trauma body.' In my research, I put forward the idea that traumatic memories are detached memories with an emotional resonance that fixes them historically in a specific place and time, unwieldy anchors for a body that is neither here (present), nor there (in the past). I analyse this paradox from philosophical and psychoanalytical perspectives. Through a layered arts practice of text, sonic art work, and moving and still imagery I examine the tension where trauma meets memory, whether in an attempt to forget, or an effort to remember. Memory in this context is perceived as crucial towards understanding oneself socially, culturally and personally, whilst trauma is understood as an experience borne by the act of ‘leaving,’ wherein the mind’s coping mechanism overwhelmed by shocking external events fractures or splits. I began this process by revisiting a journal written on the day of and days following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. A journal that had remained closed and unread until starting my research in 2012. My aim was to deconstruct my memory of this traumatic event, lay it to rest and explore the latent witnessing that defies assimilation into a narrative. I employ autoethnography as a methodology to facilitate a greater understanding of trauma and its wider cultural implications, overlaying my personal memories upon a well-established collective memory of 9/11. Autoethnography, in this instance, is a reformulation of ethnography or anthropology, an in-depth examination of context incorporating cross-disciplinary approaches. With an emphasis on self-reflection and subjective participation, as both the artist and the owner of certain memories, my intention was to engage a larger epistemological discussion of the meeting place of trauma and memory.

OFDM multicarrier techniques are now widely deployed in most wireless communication systems, in particular in cellularnetworks (L TE), broadcast networks (DVB) and WiFi networks. However, multi-carrier modulations are characterized by avery large dynamic amplitude measured by the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). which prevents radio frequencydesigners to feed the signal at the optimal point of the Power Amplifier (PA) which reduces the PA energy efficiency. Inliterature, the PAPR reduction and linearization techniques are the main approaches to solve the PAPR problem, the PAnonlinearities problem. as well as the low PA efficiency problem. The approach developed in this thesis was to study an intelligent solution for future implementations to control thereduction of PAPR and the linearization steps in a flexible way according to some predefined parameters so that theybecome adaptive and self-configurable. More specifically, our work focused on the analytical analysis of in-band measureby the Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) and out-of-band distortions measured by the Adjacent Chanel Power Ratio (ACPR)for clipped multicarrier signals taking into account the impact of non-linear amplification, memory effects and predistortion. In particular. many analytical results complemented by simulation results to evaluate the EVM and ACPR are proposed. These analytical expressions depend on the PA characteristics taking into account or not the PA memory effects and theuse of clipping and pre-distortion techniques. lt is worthwhile to note that our proposed theoretical analyses could be veryuseful for optimizing future transmitter efficiency and linearity in the field of broadcasting applications for the deployment oDVB-T2 transmitters as well as for L TE cellular networks

Streszczenie:

This study investigates verbal and visuospatial memory strategies used by individuals with perceptual or cognitive disabilities. The groups concentrated on in this study are deaf individuals who are native sign language users and individuals with dyslexia.

The study comprises an experiment and an in-depth study in which a pre-test and a questionnaire were used. Nine deaf signers, two persons with dyslexia and 12 persons without any perceptual or cognitive constraints participated. Of these 23 persons, seven were selected to take part in the in-depth study.

The results indicate individual differences in working memory capacity among the subjects and differences in performance and processing between native sign language users and hearing individuals. Further, all of the participants were using a number of different strategies and shifting between strategies in the experiment. The results demonstrate that the amount of information individuals are able to hold activated in working memory is dependent on a range of factors, both internal factors specific to the individual and external factors relating to how information is presented. Guidelines for information presentation to limit working memory demands based on the findings are suggested.

Streszczenie:
A combination of an original work of fiction, Alone Among Friends, and a critical discussion of masculinity in the work of Per Petterson, this dissertation joins a growing conversation in the field of Masculine Studies about the depiction of men in literature. Written in a spare and realistic style, Alone Among Friends is a novella that hopes to explore ideas of masculinity, friendship, success, and failure present in the mindset of the American Millennial generation. Takings its cues from The Sun Also Rises, Light Years, and The Salt Point, Alone Among Friends examines the destructive nature of hyper-masculinity and highlights the danger of attaching too much meaning to external validation as the measuring stick for one's self worth. Moreover, Alone Among Friends is also influenced by the themes of memory and knowing found within the work of Per Petterson. "How Memories of the Father Inform a Son's Understanding of Masculinity in the Novels of Per Petterson" discusses the ways in which Per Petterson, a Norwegian writer, has been both influenced by American notions of masculinity and also managed to incorporate European aspects of family into his work to create a unique hybrid perspective that merges the American idea of the emancipated male protagonist with the European family centered narrative. By tracing Petterson's influences, this dissertation will attempt to show how Petterson is a logical heir to such American writers as Ernest Hemingway and Richard Ford, and it will argue that, by firmly grounding his novels in the point of view of sons that study every aspect of their fathers, Petterson inhabits a space that has long been absent from both American and Norwegian literature alike. Through the examination of Out Stealing Horses and In the Wake, this dissertation focuses on the varying ways in which these direct comparisons between father and son influence the son's perception of his own success and failure as a man.

Since her literary debut, the classics have regularly surfaced in the highly intertextual writing of Elfriede Jelinek by means of fragmentary and fleeting citations. Her recent dramatic productions are marked by an ever greater confrontation with the Germanic classics, with numerous rewritings produced since the mid-2000s. Among these, the play Ulrike Maria Stuart (published online over three days in 2006 and only published in print in 2015) echoes Friedrich Schiller’s play Marie Stuart, while FaustIn and out (accessible free of charge on Jelinek’s website since 2011) toys with the “immeasurable” work of Goethe, (Ur-)Faust. This study unravels the different strata of the palimpsest and revises the spaces occupied by rewriting through a well-defined path, an approach with multiple entry points that allows the functioning and issues of rewriting to be described from the perspective of both its production and its reception, notably in form of dramatization. By analysing how the space of rewriting evolves into a sort of unwriting and takes advantage of “secondary” or minor (Deleuze) writing, the macrostructural, aesthetic, and socio-literary stakes of these texts emerge. The confrontation with classicity resonates with the new positioning of the author within the literary field, especially through the process of the classicisation of her works, and influences the uncommon editorial approach framing the works of the corpus under investigation

This discertation has its focus on the empiric interest of the search and the construction of the solidary relationships that were built as a result of the Agênda Colômbia-Brasil constitution. This text inquires the way in which due to the narratives related with social and political conflicto in Colombia discussions about solidary relationships between different political contexts. This work tries to stablish how emotional actions lead to solidary potical process which knotted in the same time experiences on brazilian militans and migrants of differetn political parties and political movements. In the same way this work claims for the emergency escenarios of this type of political organization and its positioning on a transnational political space. This work understands that this positioning occurs from stablishing a conceptual framework of enunciation based on the practice “give out” a determines context of the conflicto. Investigates in the memory and what it enunciates about the social and political conflicto in Colombia from an space as brazilian is.

The aim of this study was to realise a “rodent model” (C57Bl/6 mice) of age-related working memory (WM) impairments, and to evaluate the procognitive impact of several pharmacological compounds. We show that compared to young adult mice (4-5 months), aged mice (18-19 months) exhibit an exaggerated vulnerability to delay-dependant interference in a sequential spontaneous alternation task. CREB activity assessed by immunohistochemistry demonstrates that aged mice show an over-activation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) negatively correlated with behavioural performance. Infusion of an inhibitor of CREB activation into the PFC restores WM performance in aged mice. Both results highlight the link between the PFC over-activation and the age-related cognitive deficit.Pharmacological study reveals that cholinergic compounds restore cognitive performance of aged mice and act differently on brain structures sustaining WM. On one hand, donepezil – an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase – increases CREB activation of the hippocampus. On the other hand, S 38232 – an agonist of α4β2 nicotinic receptors – decreases the CREB age-induced over-activation of the PFC. Finally, using β2 knock-out mice, we show that the regulation of the cholinergic system is submitted to complex mechanisms.Overall, our experimental set up demonstrates that spontaneous alternation is a valuable model for studying age-related WM impairments. In accordance with human’s findings, our results highlight the link between prefrontal over-activation and the cognitive decline occurring during ageing. Considering that S 38232, by decreasing the CPF over-activation, alleviates the WM deficit observed in aged mice, the α4β2 nicotinic receptor appears to be an efficient target for new therapeutic strategies

Founded in 1991, HK Magazine was one of the major English-language publications on local affairs, social issues and entertainment listings published weekly in Hong Kong for a quarter of a century. Apart from providing local entertainment information, it also witnessed the rapid social and political changes of Hong Kong when Britain handed over sovereignty of Hong Kong to China in 1997. In July 2013, HK Magazine was sold to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) Group which was subsequently purchased by Alibaba Group in December 2015. However, the SCMP Group announced on 28 September 2016 that the magazine's final issue would be released on 7 October 2016. The closure of the magazine was viewed by many as the loss of a “fun, independent and free-thinking' publication. In response to the huge reaction from the community, the SCMP Group agreed that the content of HK Magazine would be migrated to the SCMP website before the HK Magazine website was removed. It was however revealed that the SCMP website did not preserve the full archive of HK Magazine as promised. A public appeal was launched to help preserve the collective memory of Hong Kong by archiving the back issues of the magazine. Apart from reviewing the discussion arising from the close down of HK Magazine, this paper also addresses the critical role of the library in long term preserving HK Magazine on one hand and providing access to its digital content on the other.

This thesis addresses the difficulties of writing the civil war and tackles the Druze-Christian relations clashes, representations, conflicting memories and a failure of the reconciliation process, implemented by the State at the end of the armed hostilities, and according to the clauses provided by the Ta’if Agreement. Besides the introduction that includes a geographical overview of the Druze-Christian region of cohabitation, that is the Southern part of Mount Lebanon, commonly called al-Jabal (the Mountain), a first historical part addresses the Druze-Christian relations in their political context since Lebanon’s independence in 1943 and until the official end of the Lebanese War in 1990 with a large emphasis on the Mountain War in 1982-1983 and the wars that resulted from it, in the Chahhâr in 1984, and in the Iqlîm al-Kharrûb in 1985. Those constitute a major fracture in the relations between the Druze and Christian communities. This first attempt at historicizing these wars is based on unpublished sources and cuts across many interviews. The second part tackles, in a first chapter, the Reconciliation process in an uncertain post-war, and the political relations between Druze and Christians. A second chapter addresses the vivid memories and the uses of the past related to the clashes and massacres of the nineteenth century (the harakât of 1841, 1845 and 1860), and the links in the memories between past wars and the Lebanese war. A third chapter reports on crossed representations between Druze and Christians, as well on conflicting memories related to the War of the Mountain.

His Story takes the form of a fictive but autobiographically based investigation into the child and young adult I used to be, and follows that protagonist into early adulthood. It tries to show the damage done to that character and the way in which he damaged others in turn. As Hemingway said, We are all bitched from the start and you especially have to hurt like hell before you can write seriously. More importantly, the main protagonist is somebody who became concerned with, and cognizant of the main political and social events of his day. His life is set in its social context, and reaches out to the larger issues. That is to say, the personal events of the protagonist's life are recorded alongside and set in the context of the major events taking place on the world stage. The manuscript is some sort of hybrid of novel, autobiography, and historical and social document. As Isaac Bashevis Singer said, The serious writer of our time must be deeply concerned about the problems of his generation. In order to make His Story effective in sharing my ideas and beliefs, and, of course, in order to protect the innocent and more particularly, the guilty, it is created in the colourful area that is the overlap between memory and fiction. When we tell the stories of our lives to others, and indeed, to ourselves, we prise them out of memory's fingers and transform them into fiction. To write autobiography well, as E.L. Doctorow said, you have to invent everything, even memory.

Our memory is prone to distortions which in everyday life can lead to mistaken memories. This thesis investigates memory distortion. In addition, one might recall (e.g. an event) correctly but misremember the source of the event (e.g. place or time of the event); this particular type of memory distortion is called source amnesia. Here, an overview of cognitive theories of memory distortion as well as the neuroscience behind memory distortion is provided. In addition, the particular memory distortion of source amnesia where one is unable to acquire when or where a fact was learned is further investigated. Results indicate that an overlap of qualities related to the information being learned causes information to be linked to wrong sources, thus creating distorted memories. Misinformation is also indicated to produce impairment in memory. In memory distortions, memory impairments are representative in various areas of the brain, including the hippocampus and the amygdala in the medial temporal lobes as well as in the frontal cortex and in the visual cortex. These key areas are also closely related to brain aging in Alzheimer´s disease and in schizophrenia, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and in drug and alcohol abuse. Individuals inflicted with these disease symptoms seem to be more prone to source amnesia compared to controls. The limitations and future directions of what we can study regarding memory distortion and source amnesia are also presented in this thesis.

This thesis serves to analyze how autobiographical memory is deployed in the current series of the Montreal artist, Susan Shulman. Her cycle of nine works entitled In Our Memories Forever (1998--2001) are created based on the archive of photographs and letters written between her maternal grandparents at the turn of the nineteenth century. This essay will discuss cognitive theories on memory and specifically autobiographical memory types in order to examine the construction of memory in Shulman's series of paintings. A thorough investigation of the works themselves will be included. This examination will culminate with a look into how reconstruction theories of memory allow for the conflation of first and second hand experiences in the work. Issues of authenticity and collective remembering will also be addressed.

Unawareness of memory problems can be one of the symptoms of dementia and can only partially be attributed to neurocognitive consequences. Research is continuing to elucidate the psychosocial factors which impact on unawareness. Research with other clinical populations has suggested that some unawareness may be due to people wishing to present favourably and therefore masking their awareness. Since awareness depends on the integrity of the same type of memories used to construct identity, unawareness may also have connections with the identity of the person with dementia. This investigation explored the relationships between awareness, identity and social desirability in dementia. Twenty eight participants with dementia and relatives who acted as informants were recruited and completed measures of social desirability, identity and unawareness. Pearson Product Moment Coefficients revealed that the relationship between unawareness and strength of identity failed to reach statistical significance and there was no relationship with whether identity was rated as positive or negative. Unawareness was unrelated to social desirability and only identity direction (positive or negative), not strength per se, was related to social desirability. The study concludes that it was not sufficiently powered to fully explore the relationship between the variables and that future investigation is warranted.

Through case studies of three Boston-area neighborhoods, East Boston, South Boston, and North Quincy, this dissertation examines the vernacular memory practices of the residents of historically ethnic neighborhoods to show the ways in which everyday representations of the past allow individuals to strategically negotiate a meaningful sense of shared identity. Using field interviews, vernacular digital sources, previously recorded oral histories, amateure historical texts, memoirs, and other expressive memory works, this study examines locally produced representations of historical identity that range from the social imagining of translocal past to personal memories of neighborhood life that are deeply rooted in an understanding of local space as ethnic place. Chapters One through Three trace the scholarly literature on space and place, social memory, and folklore studies in order to demonstrate the way in which, through a process of selection and emphasis, local folk histories have often been used to strategically reaffirm the connection between contested spaces and a certain ethnic identity. They further show how individuals use their own personal narrative repertoire to situate themselves within these traditionalized or naturalized understandings of neighborhood space. Chapters Four and Five explore a variety of contests and conflicts over the traditionalized sense of space and place examined in the initial chapters. Developing the notion that cultural symbols, such as the shamrock or the flag of the People's Republic of China, and practices, such as the celebrations surrounding Columbus Day or the Autumn Moon Festival, can bring together or "index" a variety of identity constructs, these chapters demonstrate the ways that these symbols can be strategically deployed in order to build or disrupt traditionalized understandings of the connections between neighborhoods and ethnic identity. Finally, Chapter Six suggests that, as a result of the emerging vernacular use of geospatial media technologies, the cultural symbols, narratives, and practices that are integral to the construction of local conceptual maps can now be accessed virtually. This makes available the possibility that meaningful local identities can be formed by actors who are interacting with these traditional understandings of local place virtually but who are not physically present in local spaces.

Streszczenie:
The decades following the fall of the Soviet Union have seen drastic changes in society and culture within Europe. The desire to create a unified, pan-European historical narrative has been challenged by the expansion of the European Union. Previous Western European discourse of history has been confronted by the alternative perspectives of many former Soviet countries, such as Poland, Hungary, and the Baltic states. One of the greatest challenges to a new, inclusive pan-European narrative has been the perceived exclusion of Holocaust recognition in these former Soviet-bloc countries – a topic made more volatile considering the vast majority of the violence of the Holocaust took place in Central and Eastern Europe. Recent governmental decisions regarding the recognition of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe have been extremely disconcerting to Holocaust scholars and survivors, as well as the broad Western European community. But Eastern Europe insists that they are not neglecting Holocaust narratives in their respective countries; instead, they claim the lack of Western recognition of their suffering under Soviet rule has forced them to compensate by focusing their attention on an exploration of Soviet oppression. Eastern European scholars maintain that the best way forward is to embrace a pluralist narrative that recognizes both the victims of the Holocaust and the Soviet project. This thesis analyses the adoption of memory pluralism in two places of cultural memory of one Eastern European city – Riga, Latvia.

Recently in the West, interest in the memory of the Holocaust considered as a commonly shared dark past has increased. In Ukraine the commemoration of the Holocaust is affected by the ongoing nation-building process, with a focus on the collective memories of the Holodomor (the Famine of 1932-1933) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). At the core of the debates around the Holocaust remembrance lies the memorialization of Babyn Yar, a multilayered memory site where Jewish and non-Jewish collective memories compete. Public and political actors vie for its memorial space in order to promote their own views through recognition of their respective tragedies. The memorialization and landscape of Babyn Yar is therefore transformed together with changes in the memory politics of the Holocaust. This thesis studies the contemporary politics of memory and commemoration of the Holocaust in Ukraine with a focus on Babyn Yar and its memorial objects. Through the illustrations of the memory site this project analyzes the memorial space and grounds and explores the struggles over the collective memories in Ukraine.

Within my work I explore the effects that divorce had on me and how it has disturbed my normative understanding of home and family. I have created scenarios alluding to the family home that I have manipulated in order to convey a sense of nostalgia and loss. By growing salt crystals over found objects and/or cladding them in salt, I attempt to suggest the dual motifs of preservation (a nostalgic clinging to the past) and destruction (due to the salt’s corrosive properties). In this way, the salt-crusted objects serve as a metaphor for a memory that has become stagnant, and is both destructive and regressive. The objects encapsulate the mind’s coping methods to loss. In my mini thesis, I discuss characteristics of memory sculpture as a response to trauma, drawing on Sigmund Freud's differentiation between mourning and melancholia. I also unpack how objects and traces (such as photographs) may act as nostalgic triggers, inducing a state of melancholic attachment to an idealised past. I address these concerns in relation to selected works by Doris Salcedo and Bridget Baker, and also situate them in relation to my own art practice.

This creative writing research project examines housing instability in Australia and its consequences on the way we connect to our dwellings. The project asks in what ways the lyric poem is uniquely suited to writing about the intersections of architecture and ephemeral place attachment that occur in shared rentals. I answer this question via a manuscript of lyric poems, After the Demolition, and accompanying exegetical essay. My practice embodies this argument by using the Queenslander-style house—itself uniquely suited to share housing—in inner-city Brisbane as a locus.

Streszczenie:
While most media-memory research focuses on particular cultural repository sites, memorials, traumatic events, media channels, or commemorative practices as objects of study to understand the construction of collective memory, this dissertation suggests it is our activity, participation, and interaction with digital content through multimodal platforms and social media applications that demonstrate how communities articulate shared memory in the new media landscape. This study examines the discursive interpretations of cultural heritage practitioners and participations from the Getty Research Institute, the Prelinger Archive and Library, and the Willamette Heritage Center to better understand how multimodal platforms are being used, how this use is changing the roles of the heritage practitioners and participants in the construction of meaning, and what types of multimodal memory practices are emerging. This research also underscores a reassessment of what constitutes heritage artifacts, authenticity, curatorial authority, and multimodal participation in digital cultural heritage. My methodological approach for this research takes a multilateral form of data collection, including in-depth interviewing, participant observations, and thematic analysis, informed by the theoretical frameworks of collective memory, remediation, and gatekeeping and unified by the social theories of art practice, social constructionism, symbolic interactionism, and actor-network theory. My primary recommendation from this research is that our digital practices of contributing, appropriating, repurposing, and sharing digital content represent new forms of memory practice in a multimodal context. I propose that these multimodal memory practices of interacting with digital content using different devices across different networks coalesce into platformed communities of memory, where communities are shaped and collective memory is shared by our interaction through social networks. I suggest that we need to think of social media output and metadata as being new forms of cultural heritage artifacts and legitimate social records. I also contend that metadata analysis presents new considerations and opportunities for studying the memory of digital content and institutional memory. It is my hope that these conclusions clarify our contemporary memory practices in the digital era so that we can better understand whose voices will be most prominent in the future articulation of how we remember the past.

Streszczenie:
In The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824), James Hogg uses the uncanny trope of the bier-right, a medieval superstitious belief of Christian origin that a murdered corpse will bleed in the presence or at the touch of the actual murderer, to negotiate his struggle with fading belief in local superstitions and religious faith in the Scottish Borders. Examining the origins of the bier-right, court cases involving the bier-right, and Hogg's minor works using the bier-right I offer a comparison of how Hogg manipulates and morphs this trope in Confessions. I also argue that the main character, the sinner Robert Wringhim, becomes a living-dead embodiment of the bier-right corpse.

Streszczenie:
Reducing racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare are ongoing concerns. A paucity of data on healthcare seeking behavior among older Black women has hampered efforts to make culturally responsive healthcare services available to this population. Little is known about how older Black women's expectations and perceptions of care affect their patterns of health behavior. This study explored sociocultural contexts of health behavior with fifty Black women, aged 40 and older, in Tucson, Arizona by examining what prompts these women to seek services, identifying key factors affecting their access to and utilization of healthcare, documenting their experiences in healthcare settings and how these interactions influence their healthcare-seeking behavior. If effective healthcare service access and utilization are to be encouraged among older Black women, an informed understanding of the role cultural difference plays is essential. This research has three purposes: to provide a forum for discussion of culturally relevant strategies and models for prevention of disease and promotion of wellness in Black communities; to provide perspectives on older Black women's health issues for policymakers and administrators in public health sciences; and to gain insight and document reasons for selected health behaviors among this population. Research funding from the NIH/ NIA has helped to establish this small multi-disciplinary data set on a specific race, gender and age sub-population group for future research and development of community resource partnerships; including public health education and effective healthcare service delivery with intervention / promotion efforts targeting older Black women.Findings: Older Black women's poorer health status reflects the cumulative effects of inadequate health care due to various discriminatory experiences and their mistrust of the health care system. Mistrust, expectations of racial bias, perceived cultural insensitivity, and lack of effective communication within healthcare settings were found to be barriers to their healthcare-seeking behavior. Neither healthcare providers nor older Black women can address these issues alone. Working towards more trusting relationships within healthcare settings is critical in beginning to address avoidable inequities in health status experienced by older Black women. This research is applicable to such disciplines as Sociocultural/Medical Anthropology, Health Education, Public Health, and Africana/Ethnic Studies.
