Streszczenie:
Digital filters made with the use of discrete Fourier Transform are applied in most microprocessor protections produced both in the home country and abroad. When the input signal frequency deviates from the value to which these filters are configured, a signal is generated at their output with oscillation amplitude that is proportional to the deviation of the signal frequency from the specified one. The article proposes an algorithm for compensating the oscillations of orthogonal components of the output signals of digital filters implemented on the basis of a discrete Fourier transform, when the input signal frequency deviates from the nominal one. A mathematical model of the proposed digital filter with an algorithm for compensating the oscillations of its orthogonal components, as well as a signal model for reproducing input effects, is implemented in the MatLab-Simulink dynamic modeling environment. The digital filter model is provided with two channels, viz. a current channel and a voltage channel, which makes it possible to simulate their operation in relation to protections that use one or two input values, for example, for current and remote protection. Verification of the functioning of the digital filter model with compensation for fluctuations in its output signal was carried out with the use of two types of test effects, viz. a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 48–51 Hz (idealized effect), and the effects that are close to the real secondary signals of measuring current transformers and voltage transformers in case of short circuits accompanied by a decrease in frequency. The conducted computational experiments with deviation of frequency from the nominal one, revealed the presence of undamped oscillations at the output of standard digital Fourier filters and their almost complete absence in the proposed digital filters. This makes us possible to recommend digital filters based on a discrete Fourier transform supplemented by an algorithm for compensation of fluctuations in the amplitudes of the output signals for the use in microprocessor protection.

Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to establish a criterion for the global asymptotic stability of fixed-point state–space digital filters using saturation overflow arithmetic. Design/methodology/approach The method of stability analysis used in this paper is the second method of Lyapunov. The approach in this paper makes use of a precise upper bound of the state vector of the system and a novel passivity property associated with the saturation nonlinearities. Findings The presented criterion leads to an enhanced stability region in the parameter-space as compared to several existing criteria. Practical implications When dealing with the design of fixed-point state–space digital filters, it is desirable to have a criterion for selecting the filter coefficients so that the designed filter becomes free of overflow oscillations. The criterion presented in this paper provides enhanced saturation overflow stability region and therefore facilitates the designer greater flexibility in selecting filter parameters for overflow oscillation-free realization of digital filters. Originality/value The approach uses the structural properties of the saturation nonlinearities in a greater detail. The exploitation of upper bound of the system state vector together with a new passivity property of saturation nonlinearities is a unique feature of the present approach. The presented approach may lead to results not covered by several existing approaches.

Streszczenie:
We studied the periodicities of ventilation in elderly subjects using digital comb filtering. Two groups of subjects were studied, those with and without sleep apnea. Measurements were made in wakefulness, stage 1-2 sleep, and where possible in stage 3-4 sleep. For each of the digital filters we calculated the average power of the oscillatory output. To compare subject groups we first specifically determined the average power in the filter with the maximum output. The mean of this measurement was greater in elderly subjects with apnea compared with those without apnea, both during wakefulness and stage 1-2 sleep. In both groups of subjects the cycle time of the major ventilatory oscillations was on the order of 40-60 s. There was no difference in this cycle time between the two groups of subjects in wakefulness or stage 1-2 sleep. Thus, whereas similar oscillatory processes occur in subjects with and without apnea, it is the magnitude of the oscillation that differs between the two groups. These conclusions are supported by analysis of the output of individual filters of the digital comb filter. In both groups, stage 1-2 sleep produced significantly increased oscillations in ventilation. Both in wakefulness and stage 1-2 sleep, significantly greater periodicities occurred in the apneic compared with the nonapneic group. In the few subjects who had sufficient data in stage 3-4 sleep for spectral analysis, ventilatory oscillations were virtually absent in this state. Our data suggest that subjects who develop apnea during sleep have an increased propensity for periodic breathing even while awake.

Streszczenie:
We investigate second order lossless digital filters with two's complement overflow. We numerically approximate the fractal set D of points that iterate arbitrarily close to the discontinuity. For the case of eigenvalues of the associated linear map of the form eiθ with θ/π ∉ Q we present evidence that D has positive two dimensional Lebesgue measure. For θ/π ∈ Q we confirm that D has Lebesgue measure zero. As a by-product we get estimates of the exterior dimension of D. These results imply that if such filters are realized using finite-precision arithmetic then they will have a sizeable fraction of orbits that are periodic with high period overflows.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents a sufficient condition for exponential stability and confirms [Formula: see text] performance of state-delayed digital filters in the simultaneous existence of saturation arithmetic and external disturbance. The realization of limit-cycle free state-space digital filters is carried out by utilizing better characterization of saturation nonlinearities. The presented criterion not only ensures exponential stability but also reduces effect of external interference to a specific attenuation level. The obtained condition is in linear matrix inequality framework, so it is easily tractable. It is also shown that many results reported in literature may be retrieved as a special case from the proposed condition. With the help of numerical examples, it is shown that the presented approach provides enhanced stability region for the digital filters as compared to an existing criterion appeared in literature.

<p>This paper deals with the problem of undesired memory effects in nonlinear digital<br />filters owing to the influence of past excitations on future outputs. The nonlinearities under consideration cover the usual types of overflow arithmetic employed in practice. Based on the Hankel norm performance, a new criterion is proposed to ensure the reduction of undesired memory effects in digital filters with overflow arithmetic. In absence of external input, the nonexistence of overflow oscillations is also confirmed by the proposed criterion. A numerical example together with simulation result showing the effectiveness of the criterion is given.</p>

Most modern digital filtering is done by taking the average (mean) of a signal or some weighted average. Another method is to use feedback, which more closely resembles how analog filters with feedback operate. In the case of low pass filters, all these methods tend to give a trade off in getting the signal to pass while attenuating the higher frequency noise. An alternative is to use a median filter, which selects the mid value of a group of points. While this is not as computationally simple as other filters, it allows for the attenuation of noise while allowing sudden changes in signal level to pass thru unaltered. This paper discusses the characteristics of median filters and methods of implementing them.

Streszczenie:
There has been an increasing demand for low cost, portable CMOS image sensors because of increased integration, and new applications in the automotive, mobile communication and medical industries, amongst others. Colour reproduction remains imperfect in conventional digital image sensors, due to the limitations of the dye-based filters. Further improvement is required if the full potential of digital imaging is to be realised. In alternative systems, where accurate colour reproduction is a priority, existing equipment is too bulky for anything but specialist use. In this work both these issues are addressed by exploiting nanophotonic techniques to create enhanced trichromatic filters, and multispectral filters, all of which can be fabricated on-chip, i.e. integrated into a conventional digital image sensor, to create compact, low cost, mass produceable imaging systems with accurate colour reproduction. The trichromatic filters are based on plasmonic structures. They exploit the excitation of surface plasmon resonances in arrays of subwavelength holes in metal films to filter light. The currently-known analytical expressions are inadequate for optimising all relevant parameters of a plasmonic structure. In order to obtain arbitrary filter characteristics, an automated design procedure was developed that integrated a genetic algorithm and 3D finite-difference time-domain tool. The optimisation procedure's efficacy is demonstrated by designing a set of plasmonic filters that replicate the CIE (1931) colour matching functions, which themselves mimic the human eye's daytime colour response. The best designs were fabricated and demonstrated a least-mean-square error, in comparison to the desired colour matching functions, of 6.37*10^3, 2.34*10^3 and 11.10*10^3 for the red, green, and blue filters respectively. Notably the spectrum for the red filter contained a double peak, as present in the corresponding colour matching function. Such dual peak behaviour cannot be achieved using a single current dye-based filter. The filters retain the same layer thickness for all structures so they can be defined in a single lithography step. A new approach to enable the fabrication of a multispectral filter array on a CMOS imager is also presented. This combines a Fabry-Perot filter with effective medium theory (EMT) to enable the fabrication of multiple filters in a single cavity length via lithographic tuning of the filter passband. Two approaches are proposed; air-filled nanostructures and dielectric backfilled nanostructures. The air-filled approach is demonstrated experimentally producing three filters with FWHM of 60 - 64 nm. Using the backfilled design, and incorporating a highindex cavity material, a set of twenty three narrowband filters, with a FWHM of 22 - 46nm is demonstrated. A virtual image reproduction process was developed to quantify the image reproduction performance of both the plasmonic and Fabry-Perot filter sets. A typical rgb dye-based filter set used in conventional imagers achieves a mean colour error of 2.711, whereas the experimental data from the plasmonic filters achieves an error of 2.222 which demonstrated a slight improvement in colour reproduction. The multispectral filter set developed in this work performed even better, with 4 filters giving an error of 0.906, 10 filters an error of 0.072 and continued improvement in the colour error reaching 0.047 for 23 filters. All the filter sets proposed are fully compatible with the CMOS process so as to enable direct integration onto CMOS image sensors in industrial foundries in future. The performance of the presented filters also suggest new compact applications in art reproduction, agricultural monitoring and medical imaging.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In most machining processes, large amounts of energy are needed to accomplish the machining operation. When this energy is transmitted through a structure that has minimal damping characteristics, such as a lathe or a milling machine, self sustained oscillations (chatter) can develop. When chatter develops, it can be viewed as a basic performance limitation of the machine tool. In order to suppress the chatter, a real-time controller using digital signal processing techniques has been implemented. This paper discusses a novel way of computing the transfer function of the machine tool-work piece combination and illustrates how a real-time active chatter controller could be designed and integrated into existing machine tools to overcome this performance limitation. Currently, experimental verification of the analytical work is being pursued.

Using spatial datasets like land classification and slope, along with predefined LZ geometry specifications, GRAIL Tools generates binary suitability filters that distinguish between suitable and unsuitable terrain. GRAIL Tools combines input suitability filters, searches for LZs at user‐defined orientations, and plots results. To refine GRAIL Tools, we: (a) verified software output; (b) conducted validation assessments using five unpaved LZ sites; and (c) assessed input dataset resolution on outcomes using 30 and 1‐m datasets. The software was verified and validated in California and the Baltics, and all five LZs were correctly identified in either the 30 or the 1‐m data. The 30‐m data provided numerous LZs for consideration, while the 1‐m data highlighted hazardous conditions undetected in the 30‐m data. Digital elevation model grid size affected results, as 1‐m data produced overestimated slope values. Resampling the data to 5 m resulted in more realistic slopes. Results indicate GRAIL Tools is an asset the military can use to rapidly assess terrain conditions.

Streszczenie:
Development of high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters demonstrate an effort to mitigate dangerous aerosol hazards at the point of production. The nuclear power industry installs HEPA filters as a final line of containment of hazardous particles. An exploration of analytical, experimental, computational, and machine learning models is presented in this dissertation to advance the science of air filtration technology. This dissertation studies, develops, and analyzes alternative air filtration materials and methods of analysis that optimize filtration efficiency and reduce resistance to air flow. Alternative nonwoven filter materials are considered for use in HEPA filtration. A detailed review of natural and synthetic fibers is presented to compare mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of fibers to desirable characteristics for air filtration media. Digital replication of air filtration media enables coordination among experimental, analytical, machine learning, and computational air filtration models. The value of using synthetic data to train and evaluate computational and machine learning models is demonstrated through prediction of air filtration performance, and comparison to analytical results. This dissertation concludes with discussion on potential opportunities and future work needed in the continued effort to advance clean air technologies for the mitigation of a global health and safety challenge.
