Streszczenie:
Academic disciplines are defined not primarily by their object but by their (theoretical and methodological) approach to that object, and by their claim to a monopoly over it. Even where that monopoly claim has been highly successful, it remains contestable. For example, economics, perhaps in this respect the most successful social science, finds its object – the economy – contested by political economists and economic sociologists. Whereas economics has successfully marginalized potential competitors, sociology has remained a broad church. Attempts to impose theoretical and methodological order on the discipline have met with resistance, and eventually failed. Moreover, sociology has never really reached consensus on what its object is; ‘society’, ‘social facts’, ‘social action’ were the classical options, with the list growing over time (social networks, rational action, actor networks, etc.). Thus, while we can speak of ‘heterodox economics’ there is insufficient orthodoxy to speak of ‘heterodox sociology’. This has an obverse side. Precisely because of the weakness of its monopolistic claims, sociology has been very productive in spawning new disciplinary fields, which, rather than remaining within sociology’s weak gravitational pull, successfully establish themselves as separate disciplines or ‘studies’. Criminology, industrial relations, urban studies and organization studies are the most obvious examples. In light of this, this article addresses two questions: (1) What happens to these new fields when they break free of the parent discipline, and to the parent discipline when they do? (2) If one effect on the ‘offspring’ is a loss of disciplinary orientation (as the rationale for this special issue suggests) what, if anything, has contemporary sociology to offer OS as a potential source of reorientation?

ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Kristoffer Kropp, Gry Malling Loehr and Heine Andersen: The Role of Dansk Sociologi in the Development of Danish Sociology. Dissemination of Knowledge and Inspiration for 25 years This article describes and evaluates the journal Dansk Sociologi (Danish Sociology) from its inception in 1989-1990 until its 25th anniversary in 2014. The Danish Sociological Association took the initiative to set up the journal during sociology’s institutional crisis due to fact that the Minister of Education had decided to close the sociology department at the University of Copenhagen, the only place in Denmark with the discipline. The article discusses the evolution of the journal’s organizational framework, its authors, editors, and content. The journal has been used as a vehicle for publication by a large proportion of Danish sociologists. Subscriptions have been growing until 2006. There has been a shift from theoretical articles to a wider range of empirical ones, and from a more discussion-based form to a more detached and standardized academic one. There has been considerable pluralism, and there have been no major controversies. The challenges that the journal must address are an internationalization pressure that could weaken authors’ incentives to write for a Danish journal, the transition to internet media, and finally requirements for open access that could threaten the journal’s economy. Keywords: the journal Dansk Sociologi, the Danish Sociological Association, sociology’s history.

This paper aims to contribute to, and extend, the emergent Sociology of organizational space. It engages critically with labour process approaches, which position space within a control-resistance paradigm, suggesting that the conceptualization of space embedded within these accounts is limited and limiting. Streszczenie:
For over 50 years I have been, and remain, an interdisciplinary social scientist seeking to develop and apply social science to improve the well-being of human individuals and social life. Sociology has been my disciplinary home for 48 of these years. As a researcher/scholar, teacher, administrator, and member of review panels in both sociology and interdisciplinary organizations that include and/or intersect with sociology, I have sought to improve the quality and quantity of sociolog ists and sociolog y. This article offers my assessment as a participant observer of what (largely American) sociology has been over the course of my lifetime, which is virtually coterminous with the history of modern (post–World War II) sociology, and what it might become. I supplement my participant observations with those of others with similarly broad perspectives, and with broader literature and quantitative indicators on the state of sociology, social science, and society over this period. I entered sociology and social science at a time (the 1960s and early 1970s) when they were arguably their most dynamic and impactful, both within themselves and also with respect to intersections with other disciplines and the larger society. Whereas the third quarter of the twentieth century was a golden age of growth and development for sociology and the social sciences, the last quarter of that century saw sociology and much of social science—excepting economics and, to some extent, psychology—decline in size, coherence, and extradisciplinary connections and impact, not returning until the beginning of the twenty-first century, if at all, to levels reached in the early 1970s. Over this latter period, I and numerous other observers have bemoaned sociology's lack of intellectual unity (i.e., coherence and cohesion), along with attendant dissension and problems within the discipline and in its relation to the other social sciences and public policy. The twenty-first century has seen much of the discipline, and its American Sociological Association (ASA), turn toward public and critical sociology, yet this shift has come with no clear indicators of improvement of the state of the discipline and some suggestions of further decline. The reasons for and implications of all of this are complex, reflecting changes within the discipline and in its academic, scientific, and societal environments. This article can only offer initial thoughts and directions for future discussion, research, and action. I do, however, believe that sociology's problems are serious, arguably a crisis, and have been going on for almost a half-century, at the outset of which the future looked much brighter. It is unclear whether the discipline as now constituted can effectively confront, much less resolve, these problems. Sociolog ists continue to do excellent work, arguably in spite of rather than because of their location within the current discipline of sociolog y. They might realize the brighter future that appeared in the offing as of the early 1970s for sociology and its impact on other disciplines and society if they assumed new organizational and/or disciplinary forms, as has been increasingly occurring in other social sciences, the natural sciences, and even the humanities. Society needs more and better sociology. The question is how can we deliver it.

Our article takes issue with the treatment of organizations in much urban sociology. We argue that both Marxian political economists and Chicagoan ethnographers and quantitative analysts treat organizations as derivative rather than productive of urban social relations. This problem is not epistemological or methodological. Instead, it is rooted in the objects of analysis that urban sociologists choose. Drawing on key elements of structuration theory, we attempt to lay the groundwork for improving the treatment of organizations in urban sociology by flagging some of the key insights in the sociology of organizations. We do not view this intellectual borrowing as a one–way street, and we emphasize that urbanists have a contribution to make to sociological thinking about organizations. Correcting these problems is essential if we are to understand the link between contemporary institutional transformations and urban neighborhoods.

This article addresses itself to accounting for how and why the situation has arisen whereby much, though by no means all, of what self-identifies as organizational analysis – whether in sociology or organization studies – isn’t actually organizational, and to exploring what follows from this. The article argues that the specificity of ‘organizational analysis’ – which requires its proponents to think (and, indeed, act) ‘organizationally’ – has been returned to the amorphous world of ‘social explanation’. The article therefore attempts to highlight the manner in which the tropes of social explanation deployed within contemporary sociology and organization studies reduce ‘formal organization’ to the status of a social container. In making this case, the article commends an alternative stance towards organization that precisely eschews ‘talking about organizations’ epiphenomenally. It does so by seeking to highlight key aspects of the practical disposition towards organization adopted by classic organization theories and other related approaches throughout the history of organization analysis. In approaching organizational matters in this way, it also attempts to upend the reflex accusation of naivety, rationalism and contemporary irrelevance directed towards the ‘historical artefacts’ of organizational theorizing from the present, and indeed to suggest how classical preoccupations can be applied to pressing matters of contemporary organizational concern without any need to ‘update’ them.

Recent works see organizational sociology at the brink of irrelevance. Against this backdrop, in this article the authors want to explore the current state of organizational sociology empirically. They employ a variety of manual, automated and semi-automated content analyses to examine research articles published in generalist sociology journals since the 1950s. Contrary to contemporary pessimistic assessments, the results indicate that organizational sociology has not significantly declined over time. However, the study finds an increasing concentration on quantitative research designs, business-related topics, and only two dominant theory perspectives – neo-institutionalism and the network approach. A multifaceted decrease in variety rather than an absolute decline could be the right diagnosis.

The aim of the paper is to review the current Canadian debate about the future of sociology, centered on two sets of claims: William Carroll’s vision for a transdisciplinary future of the social science and humanities (i.e. the transdisciplinarity argument) (Carroll 2013); and Antony J. Puddephatt & Neil McLaughlin’s counter-vision for a sociology bound by its traditional disciplinary boundaries (i.e. the traditionalism argument) (Puddephatt and McLaughlin 2015). The paper provides an analysis of the debate in question and argues that Carroll’s and Puddephatt & Neil McLaughlin’s reflexive diagnostics regarding the future of sociology offer two distinct, and competing, understandings of the discipline’s nature, purpose and relevance, as well as two different sensibilities regarding an audience the discipline of sociology is, or ought to be, speaking to. In addition, an argument put forth is that Carroll’s public-political and Puddephatt & McLaughlin’s professional-organizational models of sociology have important implications both for mapping out the future trajectories of the discipline, and for gauging sociology’s role and position within, and relationship to, the ‘universe’ of society.

Purpose of this study: Sociology of Organizations, as a specialization, has maintained an indefinite status, competing with other disciplinary areas regarding the study of organizations. This paper seeks to contribute to the reflection about the potential and challenges faced by the Sociology of Organizations. Methodology: For this purpose, a bibliographical research was carried out on this topic, complemented by our experience as sociologists in teaching and research on the organizational theme in some databases, such as Web of Knowledge, DOAJ, SCIELO, and institutional repositories. Findings: It is concluded that the Sociology of Organizations can provide tools for the heuristic apprehension of the organizational phenomenon, either by mobilizing instruments of a more general sociology or by fostering a certain interdisciplinarity with other disciplinary areas that deal with this phenomenon. Implications: However, this potential is generally obscured by greater visibility because it is perceived as more directly linked to the managerial phenomenon and seems to provide more illusorily practical solutions and universal recipes. It is necessary to recognize the complexity of the organizational phenomenon to advance its scientific knowledge.

This multimethod study investigates strategic collaboration in alliances connecting politically engaged religious and secular social movement organizations. We assess the impact of religious-secular strategic alliances on movement political efficacy by analyzing data from a national survey of the community organizing field to compare organizations that do/do not participate in religious-secular alliances. The conceptual framework draws on the literatures in social movements, political sociology, and organizational sociology to argue that political efficacy is fundamentally shaped by an organization's strategic capacity and mobilizing capacity. We analyze four organizational outputs that serve as indicators of strategic capacity and find that participating in religious-secular alliances is associated with greater strategic capacity but lower mobilizing capacity. A complementary ethnographic case study identifies likely mechanisms underlying both findings. Our analysis suggests that collaboration across the religious-secular divide can increase a movement’s political efficacy within a democratic polity but with accompanying complexities that participants must manage.

This study explores the extent to which institutional pressures influence the adoption of environmental management accounting (EMA) within the Egyptian manufacturing companies through an institutional perspective that relies on the new institutional sociology theory. The study has conducted interviews with staff members in 18 Egyptian manufacturing companies (organizational level), and with other different actors (organizational-field level), influencing the adoption of EMA in Egyptian companies. The study finds that there is some influence of institutional pressures on EMA's adoption in Egyptian manufacturing companies. The study finds that coercive pressure has more influence on companies to adopt EMA than normative and mimetic pressures. The poor influence of Egyptian accounting professional associations and environmental institutions has weakened the impact of normative pressures. More investigation is needed regarding the political and socio-economic factors surrounding the adoption of EMA in Egyptian context through the multi-levels institutional perspective.

Nowadays, the employment situation is grim, and the postponement and reemployment of college students have become the mainstream employment solutions. School-enterprise cooperation and university business incubation are particularly important at this juncture. From the perspective of organizational sociology, it is a win-win way for enterprises to place talent training before universities. In this process, there will be institutional construction born from the perspective of new institutionalism, emphasizing three institutional elements: regulatory, normative and cultural cognitive [1]. There are both restrictions and constraints on talents within the framework, as well as rewards based on prospects and future. In the existing research in China, many scholars focus on the dilemma, relatively critical and examine it; but there is a lack of dismantling and research on extremely excellent cases. Therefore, the author conducts research through the new institutionalism perspective of organizational sociology, giving full play to its interdisciplinary (including sociology, economics, psychology, etc.) many roles, so that organizational sociology, a knowledge so rich and connotative, can complete a complete analysis and study through composite materials, and provide some insignificant reference experience and significance for the field.

Streszczenie:
This paper examines several facets of gender integration within academic sociology: total segregation, as in all-male faculties; appointments of women in token or solo positions; variations in the departmental faculty sex ratio; and the “ghettoization” of women in lower academic ranks and positions with heavy committee assignments. These outcomes are analyzed at the organizational level as the product of the operation of internal and external labor markets in academia. Drawing on a representative 1984 national survey of sociology departments (N = 230), multivariate analyses indicate that a large proportion of the variation in gender integration from one department to the next can be predicted from the organizational context. Several organizational factors appear to militate against total segregation (all-male faculties) while promoting balance in the faculty sex ratio and in the distribution of academic rank. These include demand for labor in the form of job opportunities, especially those created through turnover; women in the institutional power structure, including a separate women's studies program; and a state legislative climate favoring women's legal and political rights.

This article outlines the transformations in the maritime industry sector in Poland from the perspective of organizational sociology and maritime sociology. The author attempts to analyze the main tendencies of changes occurring in the Polish maritime economy in the recent decades, and special attention is paid to the phenomena of organizational field and organizational culture. The research results are based on the analysis of documents, literature, and interviews (IDIs). Whereas the situation of the Polish maritime industry during the communist regime is briefly described as the background for further considerations, the author focuses more on the last thirty years of Polish transformation (triggered by the Round Table talks in 1989) and the fifteen years of Poland’s membership in the European Union.

Streszczenie:
This review paper extends our understanding of organizational deception. We focus specifically on the telling of lies – defined as a false statement with the intent to deceive – as the most common form of deception. We draw new insights from the limited number of existing studies of organizational deception in order to develop a taxonomy of lies and provide an integrative framing for the analysis of lying in organizational contexts. We engage relational sociology to develop this theoretical framing around three key dimensions: organizational context, social relations and actors’ behaviours. From a detailed examination of eleven prior studies, we interrelate these dimensions to identify distinct patterns of lying that are triggered or enabled by social relations or organizational contexts, or both. Based on this theoretical synthesis of prior work, we then demonstrate the utility of the framework in fostering comparative analysis by examining four recent studies of strategic deception in depth. We conclude the paper by discussing the implications of our framework and suggesting an agenda for further research.

In this study, which aims to examine the structural aspects of organizational culture in the theoretical plane of educational sociology, the topics of organizational culture and the structural aspects of this culture in the theoretical plane in the context of educational sociology will be discussed. Culture can belong to large masses of people, as well as groups within a certain society can have their own unique cultures. There may be specific cultural characteristics of groups such as non-governmental organizations, public institutions, private enterprises, where people are together for a specific purpose. Dec. At this point, instead of the concept of culture that will express the general fabric of society, the concept of organizational culture, which expresses the unique elements of a group, emerges. Instead of organizational culture, the concepts of corporate culture, company culture, organizational culture are also used. Despite the similar structural elements in organizations, the cultural characteristics of organizations can be cited as the reason for the performance Deciency between organizations. Values, norms, customary ways of doing business and past experiences in the organization are observable reflections of the organizational culture. Organizational culture consists of elements that can be observed from the outside, such as symbols, stories, ceremonies, and elements that cannot be observed from the outside, such as values and beliefs. Organizational culture is important for the organization itself, for the members of the organization, and for the managers responsible for managing the organization. Since organizations are in competition with other organizations, they tend to look for elements that will provide superiority. Dec. In addition to the importance of organizational culture in achieving the goals of the organization, there are also consequences that directly affect the members of the organization. In the problem solutions of the members of the organization, the presence of previously tried solution methods makes it easier to carry out their work. Managers have an important function in creating an organizational culture, ensuring its continuation and changing it when necessary. Organizational culture has a decisive influence on directing the elements that make up the organization to the goal in a harmonious way, if the manager and the manager can use it correctly. There are studies that organizational culture has an impact on organizational performance due to its effect on organizational commitment. Streszczenie:
Different notions of multiple rationalities have recently been applied to describe the phenomena of co-existence of competing rationalities in organizations. These include institutional pluralism, institutional logics, competing rationalities and pluralistic contexts. The French pragmatic sociologists Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot have contributed to this line of research with a sophisticated theoretical framework of orders of worth, which has been applied in an increasing number of empirical studies. This article explores how the order of worth framework has been applied to empirical studies of organizations. First, I summarize the basic ideas of the framework, stressing the aspects of special relevance for studies of organizations. Second, I review the empirical studies focusing on the coexistence of competing orders of worth in organizations showing that the order of worth framework primarily has been related to three main themes in organizational research: non-profit and co-operative organizations, inter-organizational co-operation, and organizational change. Third, I discuss how the pragmatic, process-oriented aspect of the research program, focusing on the intertwining of values and action in various forms of ‘justification work’, has been translated into empirical studies. I argue that even if highly interesting empirical studies have begun to appear on the pragmatic aspects of the order of worth program, empirical studies of ‘justification work’ may be a potentially very promising focus for future empirical studies.
