The luminescence of trivalent lanthanide ions has found applications in lighting, lasers, optical telecommunications, medical diagnostics, and various other fields. This introductory review presents the basics of organic and inorganic luminescent materials containing lanthanide ions, their applications, and some recent developments. After a brief history of the discovery, purification and early spectroscopic studies of the lanthanides, the radiative and nonradiative transitions of the 4f electrons in lanthanide ions are discussed. Lanthanide-doped phosphors, glasses and crystals as well as luminescent lanthanide complexes with organic ligands receive attention with respect to their preparation and their applications. Finally, two recent developments in the field of luminescent materials are addressed: near-infrared luminescent lanthanide complexes and lanthanide-doped nanoparticles.

A new luminescent material, 1-acetyl-2-naphthol-4, 4'-diaminodiphenyl ether Mg (II) has been designed, synthesized and characterized. The infrared spectrum and luminescent properties of Mg (II) material have been investigated. The results indicate that the Mg (II) fluorescent material emits blue luminescence with an emission peak at 455 nm when excited at 327 nm, and the effect of organic solvents on the luminous intensity of Mg (II) fluorescent material was arranged in the order CH3CH2OH > DMSO > solid> CH3OH.

The sensing mechanism of luminescent metal-organic framework [Zn(3-tzba)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)] -3H2O for formaldehyde detection was explored by using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. Our investigation found that luminescent metal-organic framework [Zn(3-tzba)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)] • 3H2O is able to interact with formaldehyde through hydrogen bonding to the framework. The luminescent mechanism of the hydrogen-bonded complex is photo-induced electron transfer; while the luminescent mechanism of luminescent metal-organic framework [Zn(3-tzba)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)]-3H2O is ligand-to-ligand charge transfer. The intermolecu-lar hydrogen bond was found to be stronger in the excited state than that in the ground state by analyzing the geometry nuclear magnetic resonance, binding energy and infrared spectrum in different electronic states. Calculated fluorescence radiative rate coefficient and internal conversion rate coefficient qualitatively indicated a reduced radiative process and an enhanced internal conversion process of the hydrogen-bonded complex. The hydrogen-bonded complex exhibits luminescence weakening or even quenching due to the enhancement of the intermolecular hydrogen bond in the excited state compare with luminescent metal-organic framework [Zn(3-tzba)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)]-3H2O. The variable luminescence demonstrated the potential of luminescent metal-organic framework [Zn(3-tzba)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)]-3H2O as luminescent sensor for formaldehyde detection.

In this paper, an organic light emitting device is designed, and its fabrication and performance are tested. During the stacking process, the relative thickness ratio of each luminescent layer is changed. It is found that the devices show different luminescent characteristics under the condition that the total thickness is the same but the thickness ratio of each luminescent layer is different. Among them, x varies by 8, 6, 4 and 2 nm, while y varies by 2, 4, 6 and 8 nm. Four devices are made. It is found that the electroluminescence spectrum of the device has obvious changes, the color of the device changes significantly from blue to near white, and the brightness and efficiency of the device also have different degrees of change. This paper mainly studies the role of luminescence layer thickness for the brightness in the device. The experimental results show that when x = 6 nm, y = 4 nm, the maximum brightness of the device is 4238 cd/m2, color coordinate (0.31,0.38).

Two-dimensional holographic structures based on photopolymer compositions with luminescent nanoparticles, such as quantum dots, are promising candidates for multiresponsive luminescence sensors. However, their applicability may suffer from the incompatibility of the components, and hence aggregation of the nanoparticles. We showed that the replacement of an organic shell at the CdSe/ZnS quantum dots’ surface with monomer molecules of the photopolymerizable medium achieved full compatibility with the surrounding medium. The effect was demonstrated by luminescence spectroscopy, and steady-state and time-resolved luminescent laser scanning microscopy. We observed the complete spectral independence of local photoluminescence decay, thus proving the absence of even nanoscale aggregation, either in the liquid composition or in the nodes and antinodes of the grating. Therefore, nanostructured luminescent photopolymer gratings with monomer-covered quantum dots can act as hybrid diffractive–luminescent sensor elements.

Organic luminescent materials play an important role in the fields of light-emitting diodes and fluorescent imaging. Moreover, new synthetic approaches towardsπ-conjugated molecular systems with high fluorescence quantum efficiency are highly desired. Herein, different 2,5-diphenyloxazole-octafluoronaphthalene (DPO-OFN) films with tunable fluorescence have been prepared by Low Vacuum Physical Vapor Deposition (LVPVD) method. DPO-OFN films showed some changed properties, such as molecular vibration and fluorescence. All films exhibited blue/bluish violet fluorescence and showed blue shift, in comparison with pristine DPO. This work introduced a new method to fabricate two-component molecular materials with tunable blue/bluish violet luminescence properties and provided a new perspective to prepare organic luminescent film materials, layer film materials, cocrystal materials, and cocrystal film materials. Importantly, these materials have potential applications in the fields of next generation of photofunctional materials.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) materials have been widely applied in many fields, among which phosphorescent OLED materials have more and more attention due to their luminescence efficiency and performance. At present, the luminescence layer of many OLED devices adopts phosphorescent materials as the main body to achieve a better visual experience for users. The research and development of blue electrophosphorescent materials are not mature enough. The two big aspects including color purity and the service life are major problems, and many researchers are now working on research methods of conquering the blue phosphorescent OLED materials shortage. In this article, fluorescent and phosphorescent OLED materials have been mentioned. The applications and branches of phosphorescent OLED materials are described. The article also analyzes the shortcomings of phosphorescent OLED and explained the reasons, mainly thermal activation delay fluorescence (TADF). Its purpose is to reduce the expensiveness of phosphorescent OLED materials. Meanwhile, the luminescence efficiency of fluorescent materials can be greatly improved. Additionally, the basic principles of luminescent OLED materials and the applications of phosphorescent OLED materials are also illustrated, including the prospect of blue phosphorescent OLED materials.

Over the past two decades, the development of novel inorganic–organic hybrid porous crystalline materials or metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) using crystal engineering has provoked significant interest due to their potential applications as functional materials. In this context, luminescent MOFs as fluorescence sensors have recently received significant attention for the sensing of ionic species and small molecules. In this work, a new luminescent heterometallic zinc(II)–barium(II)-based anionic metal–organic framework, namely poly[imidazolium [triaqua(μ6-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylato)bariumtrizinc] tetrahydrate], {(C3H4N2)[BaZn3(C9H3O6)3(H2O)3]·4H2O} n (1), was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized. Compound 1 presents a three-dimensional framework with an unprecedented (3,5)-connected topology of the point symbol (3.92).(33.42.5.93.10), and exhibits `turn-off' luminescence responses for the Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution based on significantly different quenching mechanisms.

The luminescent metal-organic complexes of rare earth metals are advanced materials with wide application potential in chemistry, biology, and medicine. The luminescence of these materials is due to a rare photophysical phenomenon called antenna effect, in which the excited ligand transmits its energy to the emitting levels of the metal. However, despite the attractive photophysical properties and the intriguing from a fundamental point of view antenna effect, the theoretical molecular design of new luminescent metal-organic complexes of rare earth metals is relatively limited. Our computational study aims to contribute in this direction, and we model the excited state properties of four new phenanthroline-based complexes of Eu(III) using the TD-DFT/TDA approach. The general formula of the complexes is EuL2A3, where L is a phenanthroline with –2–CH3O–C6H4, –2–HO–C6H4, –C6H5 or –O–C6H5 substituent at position 2 and A is Cl− or NO3−. The antenna effect in all newly proposed complexes is estimated as viable and is expected to possess luminescent properties. The relationship between the electronic properties of the isolated ligands and the luminescent properties of the complexes is explored in detail. Qualitative and quantitative models are derived to interpret the ligand-to-complex relation, and the results are benchmarked with respect to available experimental data. Based on the derived model and common molecular design criteria for efficient antenna ligands, we choose phenanthroline with –O–C6H5 substituent to perform complexation with Eu(III) in the presence of NO3¯. Experimental results for the newly synthesized Eu(III) complex are reported with a luminescent quantum yield of about 24% in acetonitrile. The study demonstrates the potential of low-cost computational models for discovering metal-organic luminescent materials.

Near-infrared (NIR) emissive metal complexes have shown potential applications in optical communication, chemosensors, bioimaging, and laser and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their structural tunability and luminescence stability. Among them, complexes with bridging ligands that exhibit unique emission behavior have attracted extensive interests in recent years. The target performance can be easily achieved by NIR light-emitting metal complexes with bridging ligands through molecular structure design. In this review, the luminescence mechanism and design strategies of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands are described firstly, and then summarize the recent advance of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands in the fields of electroluminescence and biosensing/bioimaging. Finally, the development trend of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands are proposed, which shows an attractive prospect in the field of photophysical and photochemical materials.

Magnetic field effects (MFEs) are used to describe the changes of the photophysical properties (including photoluminescence, electroluminescence, injectedcurrent, photocurrent, etc.) when materials and devices are subjected to the external magnetic field. The MFEs in non-magnetic luminescent materials and devices were first observed in organic semiconductor. In the past two decades, the effects have been studied extensively as an emerging physical phenomenon, and also used as a unique experimental method to explore the processes such as charge transport, carrier recombination, and spin polarization in organic semiconductors. Recent studies have found that the MFEs can also be observed in metal halide perovskites with strong spin-orbital coupling. Besides, for expanding the research domain of MFEs, these findings can also be utilized to study the physical mechanism in metal halide perovskites, and then provide an insight into the improving of the performance of perovskite devices. In this review, we focus on the magnetic field effects on the electroluminescence and photoluminescence changes of organic semiconductors and halide perovskites. We review the mainstream of theoretical models and representative experimental phenomena which have been found to date, and comparatively analyze the luminescence behaviors of organic semiconductors and halide perovskites under magnetic fields. It is expected that this review can provide some ideas for the research on the MFEs of organic semiconductors and halideperovskites, and contribute to the research of luminescence in organic materials and halideperovskites.

Interest in luminescent materials has been continuously growing for several decades, looking for the development of new systems with optimized optical properties. Nowadays, research has been focused on the development of materials that satisfy specific market requirements in optoelectronics, radioelectronics, aerospace, bio-sensing, pigment applications, etc. Despite the fact that several efforts have made in the synthesis of organic luminescent materials, their poor stability under light exposure limits their use. Hence, luminescent materials based on inorganic phosphors are considered a mature topic. Within this subject, glass, glass-ceramics and ceramics have had great technological relevance, depending on the final applications. Supposing that luminescent materials are able to withstand high temperatures, have a high strength and, simultaneously, possess high stability, ceramics may be considered promising candidates to demonstrate required performance. In an ongoing effort to find a suitable synthesis method for their processing, some routes to develop nanostructured luminescent materials are addressed in this review paper. Several ceramic families that show luminescence have been intensively studied in the last few decades. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of particles based on aluminate using the methods of sol-gel or molten salts and the production of thin films using screen printing assisted by a molten salt flux. The goal of this review is to identify potential methods to tailor the micro-nanostructure and to tune both the emission and excitation properties, focusing on emerging strategies that can be easily transferred to an industrial scale. Major challenges, opportunities, and directions of future research are specified.

A milestone in the field of organic luminescent labeling is reached, as fast and multiple (>40 cycles) printing of information onto any substrate in any size for very low costs is shown, resulting in rewritable high-resolution (>700 dpi) and high-contrast images. By making use of a simple device structure containing nothing but highly available materials, an ultrathin, flexible, and fully transparent layer stack was realized. Using light alone, any luminescent image can be printed into and erased from this layer contactless and without the need of any ink. AbstractRare earth based nanostructures constitute a type of functional materials widely used and studied in the recent literature. The purpose of this review is to provide a general and comprehensive overview of the current state of the art, with special focus on the commonly employed synthesis methods and functionalization strategies of rare earth based nanoparticles and on their different bioimaging and biosensing applications. The luminescent (including downconversion, upconversion and permanent luminescence) and magnetic properties of rare earth based nanoparticles, as well as their ability to absorb X-rays, will also be explained and connected with their luminescent, magnetic resonance and X-ray computed tomography bioimaging applications, respectively. This review is not only restricted to nanoparticles, and recent advances reported for in other nanostructures containing rare earths, such as metal organic frameworks and lanthanide complexes conjugated with biological structures, will also be commented on.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been much employed for visualizing material aggregation and self-assembly. However, water is generally required for the preparation of the AIE aggregates, the operation of which limits numerous material processing behaviors. Employing hexathiobenzene-based small molecules, monopolymers, and block copolymers as different material prototypes, we herein achieve AIE in pure organic phases by applying a nonequilibrium strategy, photoexcitation-controlled aggregation. This strategy enabled a dynamic change of molecular conformation rather than chemical structure upon irradiation, leading to a continuous aggregation-dependent luminescent enhancement (up to ~200-fold increase of the luminescent quantum yield) in organic solvents. Accompanied by the materialization of the nonequilibrium strategy, photoconvertible self-assemblies with a steady-state characteristic can be achieved upon organic solvent processing. The visual monitoring with the luminescence change covered the whole solution-to-film transition, as well as the in situ photoprocessing of the solid-state materials.

Two new europium (III) complexes luminescent materials, Eu-PDA and Eu-PDA-Phen, were prepared by the reaction of Eu(NO3)3·6H2O with 2, 3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid (PDA) and 1,10-phenanthroline, respectively. The luminescent properties of two europium (III) complexes in solid and in organic solvents have been studied. The effect of organic solvents and metal ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+) on the luminescent intensity of the Eu (III) complexes have also been investigated. The results show that the metal ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+) could enhance the luminescent intensity of Eu-PDA-Phen complex and reduce luminescent intensity of Eu-PDA complex. The polarity of organic solvents is an important factor on the luminescent intensity of two complexes.

Abstract A new luminescent hybrid material based on inorganic aerogel “LightSil” (hereinafter referred to as HM-LS) has been fabricated. Organic phosphor has been directly synthesized from boron and 8-hydroxyquinolinol within the aerogel porous structure during its supercritical drying. Intercalation of various amounts of boron ions (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 wt%) proceed at the gel aging stage. Synthesis and supercritical drying of materials were conducted in high pressure apparatus in a supercritical carbon dioxide medium at 120 bar pressure, 40°C and 500 g/h gas flow rate. The influence of ion amount on the luminescent, physical and structural characteristics of HM-LS were investigated. Analysis of the PL spectra showed that HM-LS with a boron ion concentration of 0.05 wt% has a highest photoluminescence intensity at a wavelength of 513 nm.

Luminescent organic-inorganic hybrids containing lanthanides (Ln3+) have been prominent for applications such as luminescent bio-probes in biological assays. In this sense, a luminescent hybrid based on dense silica (SiO2) nanospheres decorated with Eu3+ β–diketonate complexes using dibenzoylmethane (Hdbm) as a luminescent antenna was developed by using a hierarchical organization in four steps: (i) anchoring of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) organosilane on the SiO2 surface, (ii) formation of a carboxylic acid ligand, (iii) coordination of Eu3+ to the carboxylate groups and (iv) coordination of dbm− to Eu3+. The hybrid structure was elucidated through the correlation of thermogravimetry, silicon nuclear magnetic resonance and photoluminescence. Results indicate that the carboxylic acid-Eu3+-dbm hybrid was formed on the surface of the particles with no detectable changes on their size or shape after all the four steps (average size of 32 ± 7 nm). A surface charge of −27.8 mV was achieved for the hybrid, assuring a stable suspension in aqueous media. The Eu3+ complex provides intense red luminescence, characteristic of Eu3+5D0→7FJ electronic transitions, with an intrinsic emission quantum yield of 38%, even in an aqueous suspension. Therefore, the correlation of luminescence, structure, particle morphology and fluorescence microscopy images make the hybrid promising for application in bioimaging.

In this work, a new luminescent material of a small-molecule stilbene derivative (BABCz) containing anthracene was designed and synthesized by three simple reactions. The material was characterized by 1H-NMR, FTMS, and X-ray and tested using TGA, DSC, UV/Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The results demonstrate that BABCz has luminescence properties with good thermal stability and can be doped with 4,4′-bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBP) to prepare highly uniform films, which allows the fabrication of OLED devices with ITO/Cs2CO3:BABCz/CBP:BABCz/MoO3/Al configuration. This simplest device in the sandwich structure emits green light at 6.6–12 V and has a brightness of 2300 cd/m2, indicating the potential of this material in OLED manufacturing.

Abstract The combination of cellulosic materials and clays, such as Laponite, can provide composites with superior optical and mechanical properties compared to pristine cellulose. Synthetic clays can also be used as a host matrix for the immobilization of luminescent complexes, as the incorporated complexes may present enhanced emission quantum efficiency, photo and thermostability compared to the non-immobilized ones. In this way, we, herein, report the preparation of luminescent composites through the incorporation of a Eu(III) complex [Eu3+(tta)n] containing Laponite (Lap) into cellulose nanofibers (CNF). The thermogravimetry results show that the obtained CNF/Lap@[Eu3+(tta)n] films present higher thermal resistance than the CNF film. The Eu3+(tta)n species were found in the composite structure with preserved luminescence characteristics, and no leaching or degradation of the organic ligand was observed with the preparation of the composites.

Herein, we synthesized a type of AuNCs modified by 4,6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine hydrate (DPT-AuNCs). Furthermore, organic acids, i.e., citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA), were chosen for co-assembly with DPT-AuNCs to produce AuNCs-based luminescent materials with enhanced emission. Firstly, it was found that CA could significantly enhance the emission of DPT−AuNCs with the formation of red emission nanofibers (QY = 17.31%), which showed a potential for usage in I− detection. The n···π/π···π interaction between the CA and the DPT ligand was proposed as crucial for the emission. Moreover, chiral TA could not only improve the emission of DPT-AuNCs, but could also transfer its chirality to DPT-AuNCs and induce the formation of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active nanofibers. It was demonstrated that the CPL signal could increase 4.6-fold in a ternary CA/TA/DPT-AuNCs co-assembly system. This work provides a convenient way to build AuNCs-based luminescent materials as probes, and opens a new avenue for building CPL-active materials by achiral NCs through a co-assembly strategy.

The luminescent coarse-, micro- and nanocrystalline europium(III) terephthalate tetrahydrate (Eu2bdc3·4H2O) metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by the ultrasound-assisted wet-chemical method. Electron micrographs show that the europium(III) terephthalate microparticles are 7 μm long leaf-like plates. According to the dynamic light scattering technique, the average size of the Eu2bdc3·4H2O nanoparticles is equal to about 8 ± 2 nm. Thereby, the reported Eu2bdc3·4H2O nanoparticles are the smallest nanosized rare-earth-based MOF crystals, to the best of our knowledge. The synthesized materials demonstrate red emission due to the 5D0–7FJ transitions of Eu3+ upon 250 nm excitation into 1ππ* state of the terephthalate ion. Size reduction results in broadened emission bands, an increase in the non-radiative rate constants and a decrease in both the quantum efficiency of the 5D0 level and Eu3+ and the luminescence quantum yields. Cu2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions efficiently and selectively quench the luminescence of nanocrystalline europium(III) terephthalate, which makes it a prospective material for luminescent probes to monitor these ions in waste and drinking water.
