The use of mechanical restraint is a common practice in psychiatric care, often defended by medical necessity but seldom questioned from a human rights perspective. The purpose of this thesis has been to investigate under which circumstances mechanical restraint by bed through belt fixation could amount to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Persons with psychosocial disabilities are in a particularly vulnerable situation and as the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the most comprehensive rights framework for this group, it has been discussed whether the CRPD sets out additional safeguards in relation to restraint.  A legal doctrinal approach is the basic methodology used in order to outline the current international and European legal framework on torture and other ill-treatment and disability rights. A survivor-controlled research methodology has been applied and to amplify other voices of persons with firsthand experience of being mechanically restrained, interviews have been conducted with persons from Sweden and Spain. Healthcare professionals have also been interviewed. A feminist perspective on the law is applied.  Different international conventions and bodies of the United Nations have diverse interpretations on what acts or omissions that amount to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, although there is an aim and will to streamline the conventions. It is clear that the use of mechanical restraint can create such intense mental or physical suffering required to reach the common criterion of seriousness. However, some people do not experience the required levels of suffering for it to be considered torture, meaning that it might not amount to torture but rather other ill-treatment. The threshold for being considered torture according to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT) seems to be somewhat higher than that of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). In this thesis it was found that the most critical element for this is the requirement of intent. Intent can however be implied under certain circumstances if the practice is of discriminatory nature. If a person has a psychosocial disability, intent might be presumed if States do not provide appropriate health care. In the case of girls and women, intent might also be presumed since they seem to have a higher risk of getting restrained for unlawful reasons.  The main conclusion in this thesis is that mechanical restraint by bed through belt fixation could amount to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment according to the UNCAT, ICCPR and ECHR.

Abstract Energy recovery – Gasification, combustion or plasma? -          Competitor or complement? The Swedish waste-to-energy system has been developed during many years, and the facilities are well established within the waste management system. Even though the waste volume is significantly reduced by 70 – 80 %, the residues are quite challenging to manage due to high content of pollutants. The air emissions are quite low today, but since waste contains various kinds of contaminants, there is a high need for extensive flue gas cleaning, adding to the residue that must be handled. Today, the main part of residues from flue gas cleaning and fly ash from Swedish waste-to-energy facilities are transported to Langöya, Norway to be used for remedial purposes of an old limestone quarry. However, this option will probably be phased out sometime after the year 2023 – 2025 and other solutions must be considered such as e.g. gasification.   The Plagazi Company has a patented process, including gasification and subsequent production of hydrogen gas, that may be used as a vehicle fuel. Although gasification is a well-known technique, there is still a great distrust in using the method for waste treatment purposes. There is a conception that gasification facilities are high energy consumers, with low operational performance and high investment costs. The present thesis is part of the B.Sc. Programme in Energy Engineering at the University of Umeå. The main thesis objectives are:   Study and explain significant differences and similarities between waste incineration and gasification; Describe pros-and-cons regarding various methods to produce hydrogen gas; Describe different gasification techniques. In addition, the Plagazi-process is described; local plasma gasification with low environmental impact and a second step including production of hydrogen gas. The present study is based on a literature review and interviews with experts in the field. The report excludes biogas production in anaerobic digestion plants.   The present report has proven that there are significant differences between various gasification devices. When making investment decisions regarding gasification as a waste treatment option; fuel quality and utilization of the syngas must be considered. The method developed by Plagazi may be suitable in the Swedish waste management system to treat household waste and/or flue gas residues from the combustion plants, for production of hydrogen gas as a vehicle fuel. A full-scale facility in operation is needed to evaluate the Plagazi process with respect to cost efficiency and performance. The Plagazi concept should not be viewed as a competitor to the profitable waste incineration plants, more preferably as a complement.

The literature on clinical interventions for suicide prevention indicates that low-income, suicidal African American females are an historically underserved population. Contributing to this lack of service are the intersecting influences of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and related oppressions (APA, 2007). In suicidal African American females, a higher level of reported symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder has been found in suicide attempters as compared to nonattempters (Kaslow et al., 2000), and PTSD has been shown to be associated with heightened risk of an ensuing suicide attempt (Wilcox, Storr, & Breslau, 2009). One factor affecting manifestation of PTSD symptoms is attachment style. When a person with an insecure attachment style experiences a traumatic event(s), they are more likely to develop PTSD (Dieperink, Leskela, Thuras, & Engdahl, 2001). However, if effective coping methods are learned, more severe symptoms of PTSD are less likely (e.g., DeRoma et al., 2003; Johnsen, Eid, Laberg, & Thayer, 2002). Multiple studies examining the relationship between attachment style and coping find insecure attachment linked to poor coping skills (e.g., Schmidt, Nachtigall, Wuethrich-Martone, & Strauss, 2002; Yih-Lan, 2003). Those with insecure attachment styles are more likely to employ less effective coping methods leading to increased distress and interpersonal problems. However, there is research to support the possibility of insecure attachment style shifting to a more secure form, potentially through learning coping skills that offset maladaptive coping. This study examined the mediating role of coping on the relationship between attachment style and PTSD symptoms. One hundred and fifty African American women enrolled in a project designed to understand the experiences of low income, African American women completed a Demographic Data Questionnaire, The Relationship Style Questionnaire (RSQ) (Griffin & Bartholomew, 1994), The Ways of Coping, Revised (Folkman & Lazarus, 1985), and The Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) (Foa, Cashman, Jaycox, & Perry, 1997). The relationships among factors were examined using Structural Equation Modeling. Results indicated a significant direct path between Insecure Attachment and PTSD Symptoms of moderately weak strength, between Insecure Attachment and Emotion-Focused Coping of moderate strength, and between Insecure Attachment and Problem-Focused Coping of moderately weak strength. However, neither Emotion-Focused nor Problem-Focused Coping mediated the relationship between Insecure Attachment and PTSD symptoms. Clinical implications, limitations of the study, and future directions are discussed in terms of these results.

Is it an activity qualified as torture only when it is carried out for certain purposes? At the heart of the debate lies the question of whether or not corporal punishment is a form of torture. Aspects of corporal punishment remain acceptable according certain religious traditions. An example of this is found in traditional Islamic law, which has banned both torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, when used for the express purpose of obtaining confessions or information. In other circumstances, however, severe corporal punishment is acceptable in Islamic law. As a result, some Islamic states whose domestic law is rooted in traditional Islamic law, justify their use of torture by invoking Islamic traditions: they claim that corporal punishment is derived from God's will. These states tend to consider its use as lawful sanctions, and it is made legal under their domestic law. In this paper, Iran is studied as one such state.

Freedom of religious and belief is a recognized right in international law. In order to understand, interpret, develop and implement this right, it is important to go back and analyse the fundamental reasoning behind this right. Freedom of religion and belief is a contradictory right: a freedom for self-constraint. It is a double-sided right, a right of expression and a right of identity, two aspects related to individual and group perceptions of this right. Therefore, this right must be understood through a conflict between competing conceptions of individual and group rights. International law should protect the religious freedoms of individuals, and should protect groups only as derivative from the rights of individuals, and never in contravention of them, and generally does so. Current tendencies towards recognising group rights raise concerns, highlighting the importance of this determination. The conceptual analysis of the right serves as a critical tool for discussion of specific conflicts of rights regarding religious freedom, in different area of legal regulation. Different state constitutional structures concerning religion have important implications for analysis of the group/individual conflict. A categorization of constitutional arrangements shows that each presents problems for guaranteeing religious freedom. The constitutional analysis shows religions have public characteristics, and so must abide by human rights norms. The recognition of group rights compromises state neutrality, central to liberal theory. Whatever their constitutional arrangement, states must allow participation in religious communities while protecting individual rights. Particular conflicts are analysed: A conflict between group and individual rights exists between community religious autonomy and women's rights. While international law has been decisive in mandating supremacy of individual rights in this conflict, it has not addressed some of the root causes undermining women's individual rights. Children's religious freedom, in conflict between state, religious group, family, and child, has not always been amply protected in international law, due to absence of differentiation between group and individual interests. Lastly, use of speech by individuals directed against, or in conflict with, religious groups, such as blasphemy, proselytism or hate speech, is addressed. Discussion of these conflicts examines difficulties created, and shows that although some states, based on their respective histories, religions, and cultures, protect the group over the individual, ultimately only an individualistic approach of international law is a coherent way of protecting religious freedom as a human right.

Enterprises utilize information and communication technology, including websites, to market themselves and expand their businesses. However, employing this technology is not always a guarantee of success, especially for small enterprises. This is often due to limited resources and to the extent of having web skills present within the enterprise. Deciding who will design the website for a small enterprise is therefore of importance since a well designed website is a requirement to attract interest in visitors. The design of a website is also a main factor for the first impression to a visitor, a website that is visually appealing tends to give a greater confidence at first glance. This thesis is based on the interest of small enterprises considerations about what website design development characteristics and objective characteristics is generating more positive first impressions. To find this out, interviews together with subjective and objective measures of visual aesthetics were conducted to immerse in the aesthetics of small enterprise websites. The methods implemented gave variables to test in a correlation analysis. This correlation analysis showed that two web development characteristics had strong correlations with users' perception of visual aesthetics. None of the objective aesthetic attributes based on previous theories gave any strong correlations. These characteristics were therefore supplemented with other objective characteristics, which gave two strong correlations.

Denna masteruppsats bygger på intresset hos småföretags överväganden om vilka webutvecklingsegenskaper och objektiva estetiska egenskaper i en webbdesign som genererar mer positiva första intryck. För att ta reda på detta, genomfördes intervjuer samt subjektiva och objektiva mätningar av visuell estetik för att fördjupa sig i estetiken hos småföretags hemsidor. De genomförda metoderna gav variabler att testa i en korrelationsanalys. Denna korrelationsanalys visade att två utvecklingsegenskaper hade starka korrelationer med användares perception av visuell estetik. Ingen av de objektiva estetiska egenskaperna baserade på tidigare teorier gav starka korrelationer. Därför kompletterades dessa med andra objektiva egenskaper där två av dem gav starka korrelationer.

L'objectif est de preciser le statut economique de l'or. Ce dernier ne peut etre apprehende comme n'importe quelle matiere 1o du fait de l'existence de 2 composantes: la composante "reelle" et la composante "financiere speculative" (1opartie). Pour mieux definir cette derniere, l'accent est mis sur les specificites de l'or: stocks gouvernementaux, derives speculatives (bulles rationnelles), deconnexion de certains supports-or du marche international. . . C'est l'existence de cette composante speculative qui jusitifie les projets de retour a l'or dans le smi cesderniers sont analyses (2e partie) et rejetes sur la base de trois arguments: i)la reference a l'histoire pour justifier l'etalon-or n'est pas credible; ii) tout projet ne rejetant pas de maniere explicite le dollar comme monnaie de cotation du metal jaune est voue a l'chec. Une tentative de definition de la monnaie de reference de l'or est effectuee; iii) un retour a l'or ne serait pas forcement un "cadeau" aux principaux producteurs: non seulement le marche a terme est tres developpe et empeche une manipulation des cours, mais la rente marginale de disponibilite est toujours nulle sur le marche de l'or du fait de l'existence de stocks importants par rapport a la production annuelle. The purpose of this thesis is to precise the actual status of gold. It emphasizes the specificities of this metal. And particularly concerning its com@onents : the first one is purely "real" as the other one is clearly financial and speculative (1st part). To determine this latter, we have analysed the gold market: official reserves, speculative runs (rational bubbles), degree of connexion of the french market to the international one,. . . . The financial component justifies the proposals of return to gold in the i. M. S. These latters are precised (2nd part) and rejected as follows: i)to refer to history is not a good argument to advocate gold standard. Ii) secondly, for the quotation of gold, we have to avoid the dollar which is not the "reference currency"; iii) a return to gold is not necessarily a "gift" top producers: the futures market prevents any manipulation of prices; moreover, the convenience yield is equal to zero in the gold market due to existence of important stocks compared to the annual production. The general conclusion emphasizes the paradoxes of gold and its stakes

The thesis suggests that there are two discourses of the individual within the culture of modernity and in social philosophy and political theory: individualism and individuality. These are entirely different, but throughout modernity individuality has been submerged by, or conflated with, the dominant discourse of individualism. An aim of the thesis is to attempt to clarify the submerged discourse of individuality by identifying, and constructing or reconstructing, some of its key features. In doing this it uses liberal-individualism as a contrast concept, and thereby implicitly identifies corresponding differences, limits, or omissions in the latter. The core features of individuality (and, in brackets, of individualism) identified and discussed in successive Chapters are: Comprehensive inviolability (Limited Inviolability); Self-Deteermination (Agency); The Possibility of Autonomy Self-Realization and Authenticity (Personal Autonomy); Internal Goods and Being (External Goods and Having); The Ethical and Moral Self (Moral Minimalism); Communalism (Gesellschaft). In the case of each feature, an attempt is made to clarify ways in which it diverges from liberal-individualism.

If firms tend to keep high ability workers, then those who are not employed will tend to be "lemons," labor market leftovers who are of uncertain quality. To the extent that employers rely on employment as a signal, then well-qualified, but out-of-work job seekers will be stigmatized simply by being out of work. "Networking" is commonly prescribed as a means for job seekers to overcome the negative signals of being out of work. But for networking to work, someone must be willing to provide a connection for the unemployed person. This begs two important questions: 1) will potential referrers also view unemployment as a negative signal? and, 2) does the willingness to help depend on the strength of the network tie? We design a survey vignette experiment to study how potential referrers react to the signal of unemployment, and how their decisions to refer job candidates depend on whether the potential referral is a friend vs. stranger. We find that referrers generally do react negatively to unemployed job seekers. However, despite the risk to their reputation, friends are more likely to refer the unemployed, and do so without distancing themselves from the unemployed candidate. This suggests that networking can indeed solve the lemons problem confronting unemployed job seekers.

Major changes have occurred in the Higher Education environment over the recent past. The concept of learner-centeredness emerged with the implementation of OBET. Adaptations to traditional teaching methods will be necessary to prevent lowering of standards in teaching and learning. Mass-lecture, multiple choice questions and using the marking machine has so far been the response from the academe, thus very little deep, meaningful learning is taking place. Good facilitation should narrow the gap caused by student diversity. Facilitating improved learning requires a great deal of professional development as a facilitator. The learning process should strive to attain learning through a deep approach addressing the specific needs of the learners. To assist you to effectively facilitate learning, the article addresses some factors associated with academic achievement. Practical examples are also provided to facilitate effective learning in the classroom. The philosophy driving a good facilitator is also expounded. It is concluded that an excellent facilitator will not only make effort, but will make waves in facilitating his / her subject.

Ireland experienced an unprecedented arrival of immigrants during the years of economic prosperity. The new diversity was met with divided public opinion towards non-Irish and an increasingly selective immigration policy. The media, as a main contributor to public discourse, play an important role in the construction of migrant images and therefore have a profound impact on such developments. Employing a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, this study examines whether different immigrant groups have the same chance of favourable or unfavourable portrayal in daily newspapers. Based on the most frequent roles and topics associated with Poles, Nigerians and Chinese, a selection of newspaper articles is subjected to in-depth analysis. The overarching result that there is not one image of the Irish media illustrates how difficult, if not impossible, it is to arrive at findings that can be generalised. Individual newspapers are found to pursuit varying and sometimes covert strategies in the representation of immigrants. It is further shown that immigrants who are perceived as culturally closer to Irishness have a higher chance of favourable portrayal than those who are perceived as culturally more distant. Some commonly accepted perceptions of immigrants are unmasked as myths.

This paper uses statistical learning to examine and compare three different statistical methods with the aim to predict credit card fraud. The methods compared are Logistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbour and Random Forest. They are applied and estimated on a data set consisting of nearly 300,000 credit card transactions to determine their performance using classification of fraud as the outcome variable. The three models all have different properties and advantages. The K-NN model preformed the best in this paper but has some disadvantages, since it does not explain the data but rather predict the outcome accurately. Random Forest explains the variables but performs less precise. The Logistic Regression model seems to be unfit for this specific data set.

Through sculpture and drawing, I create my own versions of natural specimens primarily based upon the visual unity of disparate organisms. Invented specimens are composed using a variety of processes employing a mixture of atypical materials following the (20th, 21st century) Postmodern shift away from formalist and traditional uses of any singular medium. As well as a variety of art materials, the specimens are hybrids of organic and biomorphic elements, blurring boundaries between botanical, animal, fungal, metal, and mineral. Is my approach perhaps like Charles Darwin, observant and studious naturalist, or am I more like Dr. Frankenstein, science fiction maker of monstrosities?

The work discussed here is specifically concerned with the landscapes, communities and development practices prevalent throughout the Midwest. In my work I use my own personal experiences with disorientation and dislocation in the various suburban, urban and rural landscapes I encounter in my everyday life and share them with a wider audience. In that way they can place themselves within the ambiguous landscape I choose to depict and recall that it happens everywhere throughout the United States. My work uses combinations of printmaking, drawing, installation, book arts, and video art to express these themes.

Bakgrund: Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP) är en psykisk sjukdom som drabbar föräldrar där barnet/barnen blir offer. Föräldrarna, ofta modern drivs av uppmärksamheten de får av sjukvården. Föräldrarna manipulerar sjukvårdspersonalen då de ofta blir indragna i misshandeln genom diverse behandlingar/ingrepp. Svårigheter med att påvisa misshandeln för allmänsjuksköterskan/sjukvårdspersonalen är svår då det sker i det tysta samt att kunskapen kring MSBP är liten. Vid all misstanke om att ett barn far illa har sjukvårdspersonalen anmälningsplikt och på så sätt kan barnens rättigheter enligt Barnkonventionen skyddas. Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka faktorer som kan leda till tidig upptäckt av förälder med MSBP. Metod: En kvalitativ litteraturstudie baserad på case studies/case reports som innehåller narrativa berättelser som bygger på empiri och induktiv ansats. Litteraturstudien genomfördes utifrån Polit och Becks (2017) niostegsanalys.   Resultat: Fyra kategorier framkom. Vanliga symtom hos barnen, vanliga undersökningar av barnen, vanlig behandling av barnen samt beteenden hos barn respektive föräldrar. Slutsats: De faktorer som vårdpersonal ska vara uppmärksamma på är barns beteendeförändringar och förseningar i utvecklingen, föräldrar som för barnets talan, som ej lämnar barnets sida på sjukhuset samt vill ta och lämna in egna provmaterial från sitt barn. En annan faktor är familjer som frekvent söker vård för sitt barn eller varit inlagda trots att ingen sjukdom kunnat diagnostiseras eller bekräftats till följd av de diffusa symtomen som funnit hos barnen. Ytterligare en faktor är familjer som har haft många vårdkontakter och flyttar ofta. För att denna medvetenheten ska finnas behöver kunskap kring Münchausen Syndrome by Proxy spridas.

L'étude des effets de support et/ou d'alliage sur l'activité catalytique de catalyseurs supportés à base d'or en oxydation du monoxyde de carbone fait l'objet de ce travail. Les catalyseurs monométalliques (Au/MOx où M=Al, Zr ou Ti) et bimétalliques (AuM/ -Al2O3 où M=Ti, Fe ou Ni) ont été préparés par vaporisation laser. La Microscopie Electronique en Transmission (MET) associée à la Spectroscopie X par Dispersion d'Energie (EDX) a montré que les agrégats avaient une distribution étroite de taille, centrée vers 2,5 nm et une composition homogène, identique à celle du barreau vaporisé dans le cas des systèmes bimétalliques. La spectroscopie de Photoélectrons X (XPS) a révélé dans tous les cas de l'or sous forme métallique, associé à l'oxyde du métal partenaire dans le cas des particules bimétalliques. L'étude de la réactivité des systèmes Au/MOx a clairement mis en évidence la contribution du support : l'oxyde de titane et la zircone améliorent nettement l'activité catalytique par rapport à l'alumine. L'étude d'agrégats bimétalliques or-titane déposés sur alumine a confirmé l'effet de synergie entre l'oxyde de titane et l'or au sein même des particules

This thesis argues for a number of fresh readings of and perspectives on Nabokov’s Ada. I am, however, equally interested in how Nabokov is read more generally, and argue against some of the worst habits of Nabokov scholarship to date. Nabokov’s own authority over how his works are to be read “correctly” is largely unquestioned by a great number of influential Nabokovians, chief among them Brian Boyd. Still, at least since Michael Wood’s The Magician’s Doubts, there has been enough work to challenge the author’s total authority over his own texts. Reading Nabokov with doubt, ambiguity, and even insubordination (like Eric Naiman) reveals richer, more nuanced texts than a more “correct” approach. Despite its being generally recognized as having science-fiction elements, there is a great deal that still has not been unpacked about the more alien workings and history of Ada’s fictional world. With the help of the methodology in Naiman’s work on the novel, I have pieced together some overlooked evidence about Terra, Antiterra, and the L disaster. An episode in which Van, the narrator, describes an event as having had “a faint paramnesic tang” (3. 8. 510) also gives us striking insight into how he perceives his world. Time flows strangely in Ada. Instead of a one-way march towards the future, it behaves more like a tidal river, with events from all over the timeline paramnesically rippling backwards and forwards. An event as rupturing as Lucette’s death ripples backwards in time through both the novel as a piece of writing, and Antiterra as a world in and of itself. Because Van writes his memoir long after Lucette’s suicide, her signs (Naiman singling out the letters t, a, c, and l for particular attention) are scattered throughout the novel, and they do not mirror the linear progression of the plot. She often manifests despite, and at odds with, what Van as our narrator thinks is most important. The thesis concludes with an argument against Brian Boyd’s reading of Lucette, in the hope of drawing out fresh nuances of her role in the novel. I contrast it with Naiman’s deliberately “preposterous” reading of a Lucette frozen in a posthumous inferno of perpetual and unfulfillable lust. What emerges is a far more nuanced text, melancholic, enigmatic, and ambivalent where Boyd’s more author-sanctioned approach gives us false resolution and sentimentality.

This study deals with the design and application of Scripture-founded pastoral guidelines as aid or supplement to existing work stress interventions for the effective management of teacher stress as it especially manifests in Second Language Teaching situations. Important questions addressed regarding this topic amongst others include the following: • Which perspectives can be deduced from Scripture with regard to work ethic, work stress and work stress management? • What does work stress in teaching mean and what support systems are available for teachers in practice, especially as the problem occurs in the profile of a Second Language Teacher? • How effectively do the support processes for Second Language Teachers with work stress in secondary schools run? • Which pastoral guidelines can be offered for the management of teacher stress as it features in the profile of Second Language Teachers? The research of the study is structured according to the model of Zerfass, as designed for Practical Theology. The basis theoretical research clearly indicates that applicable pastoral guidelines can be deduced from Scripture as the foundational source regarding the effective management of work stress. These pastoral guidelines are identified and described by focussing on the appearance of work stress in key figures in Scripture such as Joseph, Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, Peter and Paul, as well as God's intervention and support in their different situations. God executed His plans through the different Bible characters in spite of their weaknesses and shortcomings, and this offers hope to current-day believers. The principles illustrated in the lives of the Bible characters can be applied to the lives of modern people. The following principles for work stress management are investigated through the mentioned Bible figures: Identity in God; Disciplining of thought; Delegation of work; Time management and setting priorities; Prayer and Divine support. It is clear from the meta-theoretical research that English Second Language Teachers, especially in the South African context, should receive much more support since their work stress factors are more and are very unique to their subject. There is a significant gap with regard to support bases or pastoral services for teachers in schools, in spite of there being several researchers that are of the opinion that work stress has a negative influence on teachers' mental health. It is precisely when external factors can not be controlled that the teacher should have the necessary skills for his own survival. Pastoral guidance focuses on the empowerment of the individual in an unfriendly work and living environment. The empirical study comprised interviews with three Second Language Teachers who experienced problems with teacher stress. In addition, interviews were held with three different headmasters at secondary schools to establish which support systems are available for teachers. The participants indicated that their relationship with God, the Word and prayer carry them through periods of stress. The empirical study showed that Second Language Teachers feel the need for pastoral guidance with regard to stress. The headmasters support the implementation of pastoral help in schools, since there is a void with regard to support systems or counselling in support of teachers who suffer from work stress. The central theoretical argument of this study makes it clear that counselling guidelines for a therapeutic process can play an indispensable intervention role in the guidance of teachers under work stress. During the process of establishing these pastoral guidelines, the basis theoretical perspectives were extracted through Scripture study of known Biblical figures under similar work pressure. The meta-theory was constructed from research information from recent studies of this subject field, and empirical case studies that served as situation analysis from the teaching context. Lastly, the information was integrated to formulate practice theoretical guidelines. The following guidelines for a pastoral guidance process are presented in chapter 5, as deducted from the Word of God: ♦ Physical health: The human body was created by God and should enjoy the same care as the soul and spirit. The counselee can be guided along the Word of God to a realisation of the importance of his body and its physical care. ♦ Spiritual health: Man draws his spiritual health from regular prayer and meditation regarding Scripture; and therefore prayer and Word Study are powerful instruments in the management of work stress. ♦ An identity founded in the Triune God does not sway under manipulation or unrealistic standards, because such a person understands who he is, Who he belongs to and what his purpose is, and therefore he can manage his stress. ♦ Thoughts that are disciplined according to the will of God and His Word enable a person to stay and act in a manner focused on God, even in stressful circumstances. ♦ Those who manage their time and determine priorities in accordance with God's will, are enabled to live a balanced life and to limit work stress. ♦ Those who delegate tasks, relieve their work and time pressure and also lessen their work stress. ♦ A personal relationship with God and the support, guidance and help of the indwelling Holy Spirit is indispensable for the effective management of work stress. ♦ The establishment of an effective support group relieves stress, because emotional burdens are shared. The purpose of the pastoral guidance process is to focus the counselee's faith dependence on the guidance of the Triune God. Scripture, as the Word of God, belonging to a community of believers, together with the spiritual activities that this entails, have a positive effect on counselees. The Scripture should be a non-negotiable component of pastoral guidance processes. This study has confirmed that the points of departure that the researcher initially held are valid points of departure for the support of the argument in favour of pastoral guidance to Second Language Teachers with work stress.

(Under the direction of Dr. Linda McMurry, Dr. Pamela Tyler, and Dr. Walter Jackson.)Jack Johnson reigned as the first African-American heavyweight champion of the world from 1908 until 1915. Unfortunately, unlike future African-American athletes such as Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson infuriated Americans of all ages, classes, races, and sexes with his arrogant attitude; his expensive and usually imported automobiles, champagne, and cigars; his designer clothes and jewelry; his frequent trips to Europe, usually in the company of at least one beautiful white woman; his inclination to gamble and race sports cars; and his many well-publicized nights of dancing and playing jazz on his prized seven foot bass fiddle. However, his worst offenses, during his reign as heavyweight champion, were his two marriages to and numerous affairs with white women. The purpose of the research has been to place Jack Johnson within the context of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century culture, economics, law, politics, race, and sex. The influences of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American commercialization, immigration, industrialization, and urbanization on perceptions of femininity, masculinity, sexuality, and violence are investigated; and the implications of Jack Johnson?s defiance of racial and sexual constraints on the African-American community are interpreted.

Just graduated, Livy McHaney moves into a loft owned by father and daughter Wallace and Keegan Sammler. As Livy gets to know the Sammlers, he becomes fascinated by the sense Wallace makes out the world, a skill difficult for Livy. At the same time, Livy starts working at Zoo Dunn conducting its Tournado Train. Wallace explains to Livy his reflections on animals, enthralling Livy with his big ideas about freedom and questioning when one is supposed to not. In an attempt to make his grand pronouncements concrete, Wallace recruits Livy into a secret plan to kidnap and set free a popular young elephant from Zoo Dunn. Once in motion, much of their plan fails and everything appears less certain. Livy is forced to rethink the kidnapping's meaning, the possibility of changing the way people view animals, and ultimately the allure of Wallace's "truth" in forging his own ideas about life.
