Pełny tekst źródłaMicrowave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) are superconductive thin films LCresonators with high quality factors. They can simultaneously record single-photon events and measure their energy without any added optics. Combined with the ease of multiplexing thousands of pixels into a large array, MKIDs are now at the heart of current and upcoming ground-based astronomy applications .Among them is the SpectroPhotometric Imaging for Astronomy with Kinetic InductanceDetectors (SPIAKID) project at Paris Observatory. We are using MKID technologyto build a 20,000 pixels spectrophotometer that will be deployed in 2025 on the 3.6m New Technology Telescope (NTT) in Chile. SPIAKID aims to study the population andmetallicity of stars in Ultra Faint Dwarf (UFD) galaxies in the Local group to have abetter understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. We will present an original design intended to improve the optical coupling between incident photons and the absorber part of the detector

Pełny tekst źródłaA photonic crystal is a composite structure with periodically arranged materials at the wavelength scale. The periodicity allows the opening of photonic band gaps i. E. Frequency ranges for which light can not propagate in the structure, whatever its polarization or propagation direction. Two types of components, implementing two-dimensional photonic crystals, have been studied, for the optical telecommunication wavelengths between 1. 3 and 1. 55mM. Their modeling is carried out using the mathematical Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) method. The first component, for guided optics, is based on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The two-dimensional photonic crystal is etched in the silicon film; diffraction gratings allow in and out coupling of light. Several substrates have been considered for which we have studied the propagation of guided waves. Then we have dimensioned the couplers and photonic crystal. To model these crystals, in integrated optics, we have used an approximate calculation based on the RCWA method which enables the determination of their optical properties with a good approximation. A second component has been studied and realized for diffractive optics. It is obtained by etching grooves through one or several layers of a one-dimensional stack. As all the layers are etched, the structures, having two directions of periodicity and being made out of three different materials, constitute non-classical 2D photonic crystals. We have shown the possibility to realize, with those structures, mirrors and filters, dispersive or not, polarizing or not. We have shown the feasibility of etching multilayer (silicon /silicon nitride) structures on membranes using a focused ion beam etching

Pełny tekst źródłaOn a metal surface, visible light can couple with surface free electrons to form a very interesting quasi-particle, the surface plasmon-polariton. The main property of this object is to be evanescent in the directions perpendicular to the surface. This feature makes the plasmon ideally suited to transport electromagnetic information in two dimensions and on a sub-wavelength scale. If it is excited by a quantum source, it retains this quantum aspect of the signal, even if millions of electrons are involved in its propagation. In this manuscript, I present the experimental and theoretical results obtained during my PhD in surface plasmonics. By combining the use of nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in nanodiamonds, which are single photon emitters, and of a scanning near field optical microscope (SNOM), I was able to study numerous properties of the NV center and surface plasmons, both in the classical and quantum regimes. In particular, I have performed a complete study of the internal photo-dynamics of the NV center in different excitation regimes. Moreover, I have studied the leakage radiation microscopy, a dedicated imaging mode in plasmonics , by highlighting some optical aberrations that can arise in conditions of optical index mismatch. Furthermore, I have ran spatio-temporal correlation measurements on surface plasmons excited by NV centers with a specific experimental system I implemented. Finally, I describe in the manuscript the very first studies of the interaction between plasmons and different elliptical and parabolic cavities milled in the metal. This has led to the measurements of the plasmonic local density of states

Pełny tekst źródłaLn near-field optical microcsopy (NSOM), an active tip uses a single nanoparticle's luminescence as source of light to image a sample. Such probe should allow one to reach a lateral optical resolution only limited by the size of the particle. Implementing an active tip faces three main issues: a suitable near-field environment, and particles displaying suitable emission characteristics have to be available, and eventually those particles have to be attached at the end of a standard NSOM tip. During this thesis, a NSOM/confocal microscope designed for such applications has been developped. Imaging experiments using a single CdSe nanocrystal have been presented. Prospective studies on other particles fit for such applications are presented : doped rare-earths oxides and nanodiamonds (diameter smaller than 25 nm) doped by col or center

Pełny tekst źródłaAt present, the Low Surface Brightness galaxies (LSB) constitute the least well known fraction of galaxies. Nevertheless, they represent the most important population of galaxies. We selected an homogenous sample of about 4000 LSB galaxies using the all-sky near-infrared (J, H and Ks-band) 2MASS survey brightness galaxies in order to study their properties. The first results of the multiwavelength observations (infrared, optical and HI data) are: (1) The central surface brightness of the selected galaxies (in Ks band) are similar to the central surface brightness of the optical selected LSB galaxy; (2) These infrared LSBs are blue in majority with some extremely blue galaxies. Not many red LSBs were found; (3) The mass HI to light ratio of the infrared LSB are similar to the ratio of High Surface Brightness galaxies. A correlation appears between the ratio M_HI/L and the absolute magnitude in Ks band; (4) 50 infrared LSBs observed in HI present a mass of gaz HI greater than 10^10 M[Sun] ; (5) A comparison between a large range of LSB galaxies (optical and infrared selected) and a simple model of formation of LSB disk has been done and the majority of the properties of LSBs are well reproduced

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this PHD is to study gold nanoparticles by extinction spectroscopie, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Near-field optic. The extinction measurements on such particles designed by electronic beam lithography have given evidence of the particle shape effect on the Plasmon resonance position. We have also observed the existence of multipolar Plasmon resonance on elongated nanoparticles. The SERS efficiency of nanoparticles has been investigated by deposing several different molecular probes (BPE, rhodamine 6G and benzoïc acid). The observation of the dependence of the Raman enhancement versus the nanoparticle length is clearly demonstrated and remarkably a maximum enhancement is observed for a specific length. For such particles, we also show clearly that a multipolar localized surface plasmon modes exhibites a stronger efficiency than the first dipolar order. We have studied the nanoparticles by Near-Field Optical Microscopy. We reported on one artefact related to the error signal in cantilever vibration amplitude of the illumination beam and is insidious because it can produce sub-diffraction limited optical features that actually have no correlation with the true optical Near-Field. To conclude, we also present some first results on one new kind of tip applied to Raman Near-Field spectroscopy

Pełny tekst źródłaIn order to offer new possibilities for near infrared optical amplification, new approaches are proposed for the design of organic devices. The fabrication of polymer devices for optical amplification in the near infrared region is difficult because of the change in properties, especially a drastic shortening in radiative lifetime, of the erbium ion in an organic medium. Several main axes of development. Can be deduced from the literature. First, the organic chelate formulation can be adapted and optimised in order to weaken interactions between the lanthanide ion and the matrix, and second, the use of high absorption cross section ligands can optimise the pumping efficiency. This study presents the results obtained in these two directions, by studying perhalogenated organic complexes, or by using dye type ligands with a very high absorption cross section in the visible. The studies made in the second approach allowed to synthesize and çharacterize molecules with largely unknown optical properties : lanthanides phthalocyanines. The study of an erbium phthalocyanine in particular allowed the determination of the energy transfer dynamics, and the energy transfer quantum yield was determined to be close to one

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this thesis, we adapt an aperture scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) featuring an aluminum hollow pyramid as a probe, for a use in the near-infrared range (NIR). We apply this SNOM system to characterize tensile-strained quantum well laser diodes with a metallic patterning designed for an electrical and integrated generation of surface plasmons-polaritons (SPPs) at the telecom wavelengths. SPPs are generated by structuring the top surface of the diode ridge with a gold grating. The study of the transverse mode field distribution also allows us to analyze the influence of the metallic layer on the cavity and to show the eventual existence of a hyrid plasmonic mode. We also develop a broadband super-resolution imaging technique based on the action of an intensity-modulated electromagnetic field on an atomic force microscopy tip. The study as a function of the modulation frequency shows several regimes where different mechanisms are involved in the field-tip interaction. We also validate its ability to probe evanescent fields and subwavelength apertures in a metallic film, from the visible range up to the mid-IR

Pełny tekst źródłaColloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have photo-physical properties that make them objects of choice for various applications, such as biological marking, photovoltaics or quantum optics. Their interaction with a photonic structure can modify their emission properties (lifetime, intensity, etc.). The near-field optical microscope is a privileged tool to probe these changes at the nanoscale. This thesis deals with the realization of an active near-field probe made from a CdSe / CdS core / shell nanocrystal grafted to the apex of a thinned optical fiber. This probe is used to map, in the 3 dimensions of the space and on the nanometric scale, the variations in the lifetime of the emitter. It makes it possible to account for variations in photonic modes on the surface.A part of this thesis concerns the realization of the active probe itself. Thanks to this probe the studies are then developed on a hole grating made in a thin film of gold. FDTD simulations were performed to determine relevant grating parameters and to analyze their near field response. The experimental results of the lifetimes at various points of different gratings, obtained with the active probe, are compared with the numerical results

Pełny tekst źródłaNear-field optical forces arise from evanescent electromagnetic fields, such as in the near-field of photonic waveguides and nanocavities where light is highly confined. These contactless forces can be advantageously used to trap and manipulate micro- and nano-objects in solution. This thesis aims at studying these intriguing interactions and investigating their potential applications. The first chapter is an introduction to the fields of colloidal systems and optical trapping, more especially using near-field optical forces. The second chapter presents the experimental setup and the process used to fabricate optofluidic chips with microfluidic channels. The trapping potential experienced by 2 $µm$, 1 $µm$, and 500 $nm$ microbeads at the surface of a photonic nanocavity is studied in the third chapter. Our results lead to the concept of optofluidic near-field optical microscopy. In the fourth chapter, we study the dynamics and the manipulation of trapped microbeads clusters in fluidic flows. The last chapter focuses on the trapping and the manipulation of microbeads at the surface of waveguides using copropagating modes

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this thesis consisted in developing dyes from the polymethine family absorbing in the near-infrared (NIR) region and featuring pronounced nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Several new chromophores have been prepared and their spectroscopic properties have been systematically investigated in order to establish structure-properties relationships. This strategy has permitted the identification of the factors that enhance the NLO response of polymethines and allowed the prediction of their optical behaviour depending on subtle structural modifications. Three families of dyes have been prepared and investigated: boron aza-dipyrro-monomethines (aza-bodipys), symmetrical heptamethines and unsymmetrical heptamethines. In a first time, aza-bodipys possessing electro-donating peripherical substituants has been synthesized. A detailed spectroscopic study allow the identification of structures that present a high two-photon absorption (TPA), towards optical limiting applications at telecommunication wavelengths (1500 nm). The next chapter rationalizes the equilibrium surrounding the cyanine limit. The study of the central substitution of several heptamethines derivatives permitted the fine tuning of their optical properties upon a large spectral region and evidenced a new bis-dipolar electronic structure. Within this dye family, keto heptamethine derivatives has been tested in bio-imaging experiments (living cells and brain) using non-linear microscopy. Finally, the elaboration of original unsymmetrical heptamethines is detailed in the last chapter. These chromophores revealed ideal second order NLO properties for applications in electro-optic modulation

Pełny tekst źródłaThis work deals with near field or local probe microscopes. The resolution of such microscopes depends on the physical effects connected to the geometry of the probe and onthe type of the interaction between the probe with the sample under test. In. This framework, we have developed and realized an instrument combining both an optical detection and an atomic force detection. The first one allows us to determine the mapping of the light intensity on the object surface, whereas the force detection provides the topography on the same site of the object. The double detection has been realized ansd demonstrated. The acquisition of these complemental data allows us to understand the interaction between light and matter at nanometer scale and to point out the optical effects -connected either to the topography or to the physical - chemical properties of the object. Two attempts of optical image optimization have been carried out either by metallization of the tip or by using optical resonance in a Fabry-Pérot cavity. The last chapter deals with a modeling based on a first order perturbative computation ( coupled method)

surface.

Pełny tekst źródłaWith the goal of reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, policy makers encourage practices intended to sequester carbon in soils (reforestation, changes in farming practices). New methods are required to rapidly and accurately measure soil C at field- and landscape-scales. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an analytical technology adapted to these specifications but remains experimental research in soil science. This thesis has focused on the first step of this analytical method: signal formation. The soils are very complex materials, in terms of chemical composition and physical structure. Hence, the spectroscopic signal is negatively impacted by light scattering. Consequently, the conditions of the Beer-Lambert are no longer fulfilled, and the chemometric models to predict the carbon content of soils are less accurate and robust. We develop an original optical method based on light polarization spectroscopy to measure the absorbance of highly scattering materials. By selecting photons being less scattered, we compute a new absorbance signal which is a good approximation of the Beer-Lambert absorbance. This method, called Polis, was experimentally validated on model materials in liquid and powdered form. Applied on soils to predict Total Organic Content, the model built with the PoLiS absorbance outperform the models built with the classical absorbance computed from the diffuse reflectance signal

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis is focused on the theoretical and experimental study of plasmonic waveguides operating at a wavelength of 1. 55µm. Such plasmonic waveguides are investigated for optical interconnections with sub-wavelength lateral confinement. Several computational codes have been developed as predictive tools for the design of structures but also for systematic comparisons with experimental measurements. First, a 2D model based on multilayer approach was used to identify and characterize plasmonic modes on planar waveguides. A mode solver was also developed to determine the eigenmodes in plasmonic waveguides with various transverse shapes. Finally, these two codes have been re-used to implemente the optical source in a numerical model based on Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) approach. This final model was used to simulate numerically plasmonic structures both in 2D or 3D. Two categories of plasmonic waveguides have been processed by electron beam lithography. A scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) based on laser feedback interferometry has been used to observe experimentally the optical properties in these structures. The first waveguiding structures were based on metallic stripes, with propagation length up to few hundred of µm but at low lateral confinement. The second series of waveguiding structures was based on DLSPP consisting of a sub-wavelength polymer ridge deposited on a gold layer. Such DLSPP optical waveguides allow sub-wavelength lateral light confinement and are investigated as efficient interconnection between highly integrated electronic devices and optical links

Pełny tekst źródłaAfter classifying the various probes used in near field optics, we present a new polymer probe for field optics microscopy. We describe its fabrication and its major optical characteristics and then present the improvements that can be made to those probes in order to enhance their resolution. In order to use those new probes, we developed a scanning near field optical microscope (SNOM) using a regulation system based on a quartz tuning fork. We present the experimental apparatus concentrating ourselves on the development of the regulation system. We then expose some chosen results obtained with the polymer probes. We thus present two luminescence studies : a study of a nanostructured luminescent sample which allowed us to determine the resolution of the probe used, and a study on the luminescence of optically nanostructured porous silicon. Next we present results obtained on guided optics and optoelectronics samples : a mode study on a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), and a new method for mapping the refractive index inside a guiding structure, and finally we observe modes propagating through an optical waveguide which allowed us to test yet another aspect of the polymer probes. Lastly, we present a study of the coupling between fluorophores and metal nanoparticles
