In this chapter, we will discuss perceptual processes responsible for forming such units within and between sensory channels, typically for the purpose of recognition. Our discussion of multisensory interactions in object perception will provide a useful domain for illustrating the key notion of optimal multisensory integration and for introducing Bayesian models of perception. These models provide important novel ways of addressing classical problems in the philosophy of perception, in influential historical approaches such as the Gestalt theory of perception, and in applications to rehabilitation based on sensory substitution.

Decision making is the process by which alternatives are deliberated and chosen based on the values and goals of the decision maker. In this chapter, we describe recent progress in understanding how living organisms make decisions and the implications for engineering artificial systems with decision-making capabilities. Nature appears to re-use design principles for decision making across a hierarchy of organizational levels, from cells to organisms to entire populations. One common principle is that decision formation is realized by accumulating sensory evidence up to a threshold, approximating the optimal statistical technique of sequential analysis. Sequential analysis has applications spanning from cryptography to clinical drug testing. Artificial perception based on sequential analysis has advanced robot capabilities, enabling robust sensing under uncertainty. Future applications could lead to individual robots, or artificial swarms, that perceive and interact with complex environments with an ease and robustness now achievable only by living organisms.

Throughout the history of neuroscience, electrophysiological and imaging techniques have been utilized to observe neural signals at various spatial and temporal scales. However, it has been difficult to manipulate the activity of specific cells or neural circuits with the spatial and temporal resolutions relevant to neural coding. A novel technique called optogenetics, has recently been developed to control the activity of specific cells. This technique allows rapid and reversible optical activation or silencing of specific cells, which have been genetically transduced with light-sensitive molecules. The development of microbial opsin-based optogenetic molecular sensors has made optogenetics easily adaptable in various in vivo and in vitro preparations, and the technique has already been applied to understand neural circuit mechanisms of many behaviors and diseases. Here, we provide an introduction to optogenetics, the practical concerns in using the technique in vivo, and examples of applications that combine traditional electrophysiology techniques with optogenetics.

Functional neuroimaging techniques include methods that probe various aspects of brain function and help derive models of brain organization in health and disease. These techniques can be grouped in two categories. Some are mainly based on electromagnetic signals (electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography), recording brain activity using a large number of sensors with exquisite temporal resolution (usually of the order of a kilohertz) but allowing only indirect characterization of three-dimensional brain activity by resorting to mathematical models. The second type includes different techniques (PET scan, SPECT, MRI, optical imaging) that typically assess metabolic or hemodynamic parameters, with millimeter spatial resolution and usually from the entire brain volume. However, temporal resolution is usually low because it is primarily driven by metabolic processes that unfold in several seconds or minutes. This chapter focuses on this second type, covering the contribution of brain imaging to understanding NREM sleep and REM sleep and also sleep disorders.

Low morale can develop from a sense of poor coping with a predicament that cannot be changed, often encountered with progressive diseases like advanced cancer. The prevalence of clinically significant demoralization in patients with cancer is 15%. Demoralization can be diagnosed when a poor sense of coping is associated with low morale, reduced hope, and a sense of feeling stuck, with related symptoms of feeling helpless, pointless or purposeless, and with doubts about the value of continued life. Meaning-based coping may need to be evoked to reduce the accompanying distress and social and functional impairment that can develop. Diagnoses like demoralization syndrome, adjustment disorder with demoralization, and major depression with demoralization help to guide the optimal choice of treatment. Cognitively informed and existentially oriented therapies can help to restore morale and sustain engagement with the living.

Psychiatric comorbidities are common in patients with chronic pain syndromes. Depression, anxiety, insomnia, somatic symptom disorder, substance use disorders, personality disorders, and problematic coping strategies present unique treatment challenges to pain medicine specialists. Patients with these comorbidities tend to have poorer response to treatment, higher rates of complications, and greater pain-related suffering. To reduce stigma, providers are encouraged to define pain as both a sensory and emotional experience. This intimate connection implies that optimal pain treatment requires concurrent attention to psychosocial well-being. Overlapping biological and psychologic mechanisms in the development of chronic pain and psychiatric disorders may contribute to the high rates of comorbidity. Methods for quickly identifying psychiatric disorders within busy clinic settings and brief interventions that pain specialists can deliver are described. Finally, indications for referral to specialty mental health and the benefits of multidisciplinary treatment, which can include psychiatric medications and evidence-based psychologic treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, are discussed.

This chapter examines solutions to the Maxwell equations in a vacuum: monochromatic plane waves and their polarizations, plane waves, and the motion of a charge in the field of a wave (which is the principle upon which particle detection is based). A plane wave is a solution of the vacuum Maxwell equations which depends on only one of the Cartesian spatial coordinates. The monochromatic plane waves form a basis (in the sense of distributions, because they are not square-integrable) in which any solution of the vacuum Maxwell equations can be expanded. The chapter concludes by giving the conditions for the geometrical optics limit. It also establishes the connection between electromagnetic waves and the kinematic description of light discussed in Book 1.

Randomized clinical trials in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, and smaller studies for rarer autoimmune diseases, have led to distinct immune molecule–targeted and mechanism-specific therapies. The fields of cerebrovascular medicine, neurooncology, and neuroinfectious diseases have not remained static either. All of these gains present a challenge, however, in that early and accurate neurologic diagnosis is more important than ever. In our experience, some diagnostic pitfalls lie in the interpretation of test results and images without reference to the nuances of the clinical history and examination. Although some things change (eg, technology), other things never change (eg, clinical common sense). The 83 case-based chapters focus on key components of the history, examination and test findings, and differential diagnosis, although we also reference treatment approaches extensively throughout. To bring some form to this extensive repertoire of cases, the book is divided into 3 sections covering central nervous system demyelinating disease, autoimmune neurologic disorders, and others. Illustrations include imaging and, where relevant, pathologic images and video material. Board review–style questions are also provided.

Invalid Modernism contributes to an intersectional moment in disability studies by looking at aesthetics through non-conforming bodies and minds. It also offers an intersectional understanding of modernism by studying the representation of physical and cognitive difference during a period marked by progressive reforms in health, labor, and welfare. Readings of texts by Henry James, Samuel Beckett, Virginia Woolf, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Djuna Barnes, Oscar Wilde, F. T. Marinetti, Jean Toomer, an opera by Alexander Zemlinsky, and paintings and constructions of Dadaists and Surrealists are set against historical developments in sexology, medical discourse, and eugenics and anthropometry. Modernist works are well known for challenging formal features of narration and representation, but this challenge has often been enabled by shell-shocked veterans, tubercular heroines, blind soothsayers, invalid aesthetes, and neurasthenic women. Such figures complicate an aesthetics of autonomy by which modernism is often understood. Since its evolution in the eighteenth century modern aesthetics has been seen in terms of judgments based on detached appreciation. What begins as a private sensory response to an object or natural formation results in a disinterested judgment about the value of that response. By looking at modernist aesthetics through a disability optic, Invalid Modernism attempts to restore the missing body to aesthetic discourse through figures marked by medical discourse of the period as “invalid” subjects.

If there are symmetries, conservation laws follow and quantum states which are eigenfunctions of the conserved quantities. By contrast with no particular symmetry topological effects occur such as the Bohm–Aharonov effect: also stable vortex formation in superfluids, superconductors and BEC, all these having quantized circulation of some sort. The quantum Hall effect and quantum spin Hall effect are ab initio topological. A third theme is entanglement: a feature that distinguishes the quantum world from the classical world. This property led Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen to the view that quantum mechanics is an incomplete physical theory. Bell proposed the way that any underlying local hidden variable theory could be, and was experimentally rejected. Powerful tools in quantum optics, including near-term secure communications, rely on entanglement. It was exploited in the the measurement of CP violation in the decay of beauty mesons. A fourth theme is the limitations on measurement precision set by quantum mechanics. These can be circumvented by quantum non-demolition techniques and by squeezing phase space so that the uncertainty is moved to a variable conjugate to that being measured. The boundaries of precision are explored in the measurement of g-2 for the electron, and in the detection of gravitational waves by LIGO; the latter achievement has opened a new window on the Universe. The fifth and last theme is quantum field theory. This is based on local conservation of charges. It reaches its most impressive form in the quantum gauge theories of the strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions, culminating in the discovery of the Higgs. Where particle physics has particles condensed matter has a galaxy of pseudoparticles that exist only in matter and are always in some sense special to particular states of matter. Emergent phenomena in matter are successfully modelled and analysed using quasiparticles and quantum theory. Lessons learned in that way on spontaneous symmetry breaking in superconductivity were the key to constructing a consistent quantum gauge theory of electroweak processes in particle physics.
